Ireland FAQ's

First and foremost, people think of Ireland as ` the Emerald Isle `, and its verdant beauty can be best seen in its many private and public gardens . It is also known for its castles , of which there once numbered over 30,000 . They dot the Irish countryside, ranging from large stone fortifications to crumbling ruins. The latter castles are just the newest of Ireland`s ruins , which are famous in their own right, and stretch back to the time of the Celts. Coupled with backdrops of green fields, mountains, and even cliffsides, is it any wonder why people think Ireland is one of the most picturesque places on Earth, with fantastic views ? Ireland is fiercely proud of its culture, traditions , and native language (Irish Gaelic, or simply called Irish today). Included in Ireland`s cultural tradition are very strong literary roots , and the founding fathers of Irish prose and poetry are among the greatest minds of all time. You can also see Irish culture on display in the heritage towns as well as in the Gaeltacht (a predominantly Irish-speaking area of the country) where you can take Irish language lessons or even learn about traditional Celtic music ? If you don`t get a chance to learn much about it, at least take some time to listen to it, either at one of a myriad of festivals or in one of Ireland`s many pubs . (It isn`t an Irish experience without a pint of Guinness !)

Most people who come to Ireland arrive in Dublin , its capital; even if you arrive in the country through another city, you should make time to spend at least three days here. We recommend that you drive so you can explore absolutely everything Ireland -- urban and rural -- has to offer. One of the most popular tourist drives is the Ring of Kerry , a 111-mile route which starts in Killarney (home to a picturesque and serene national park ) and passes through many towns, including Kenmare , located on the ring`s southeastern edge. If you want to travel north from Dublin instead, be sure to visit County Meath on your way across the border to Northern Ireland , where we definitely recommend stopping to visit in Belfast , the capital, and vibrant Derry (Londonderry) . Derry is just a hop, skip and a jump away from County Donegal , across Northern Ireland`s western border in the Republic, which offers some of the most beautiful views in the country, from mountains to cliffsides in mere minutes. For those going to explore the Ring of Kerry, drive up the coast of Western Ireland afterwards and make some time to explore the beautiful and vibrant cities and towns such as Limerick , Shannon , and Galway . Galway, known for its festivals and seafaring traditions, is a great place to explore for a few days before moving on to see more of the country. If more of the coastal Irish life is what you`re after, head south again to South West Ireland and spend some time in Cork and Kinsale . Take a day trip to Blarney Castle , northwest of Cork, and kiss the Blarney Stone! Then head east to South East Ireland , where Waterford , known for its shimmering crystal and Viking traditions, is the region`s largest city.

The Emerald Isle of Ireland, with its lush green fields, rocky coastlines, and historic towns and villages, can be enjoyed year-round. However, there are more advantageous times to visit when compared to others. It is recommended to visit in the shoulder season , when accommodations and airfares are not as high as the summer high season, but temperatures are still mild and the rainy season has finally ended. Ideal times to visit Ireland are the latter part of April, May, September , and the early part of October . If you visit between late fall and early spring, note that you will most likely get caught in rain showers. It`s very Irish -- but it can be very dreary for a holiday. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Ireland .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

The best way to experience everything that Ireland has to offer, from the big cities to the small, charming villages in the Gaeltacht and even further afield, is to travel by car. Trains in Ireland link large and medium-sized population centers, but do not always travel to smaller villages. By Car: The road network in Ireland has grown to become one of the most developed infrastructures in Western Europe, due largely in part to the `Celtic Boom` of the 1990s. National highways criss-cross the country and expressways link major cities to the suburbs. As you explore the countryside, you will find quaint country lanes that may be as small as a single lane! There are many popular driving routes that connect tourists directly with the culture and landscape of rural Ireland, such as the Burren Loop and the Ring of Kerry, among others. There are minor differences between driving in the Republic and driving in Northern Ireland, mostly confined to signage. (For example, speed limits are posted in miles per hour in the North and in kilometers per hour in the Republic.) For more information on getting around by car, check out: Driving in Ireland . By Train: Rail travel in Ireland is administered by Irish Rail. Rail lines connect nearly every provincial capital, although they do not stop at many villages, especially in the west and north of the country. A rail line connects Dublin and Belfast; Irish Rail offers daily trains from Dublin Connolly train station to Belfast Central; and National Rail offers the same in the other direction. The Republic of Ireland`s hubs for rail transportation are Dublin, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, and Galway, with Belfast and Derry being the hubs for rail in Northern Ireland. Train service connects to, or is directly adjacent to, ferry ports in Drogheda, Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Ringaskiddy (Cork), and Rosslare Europort.

The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro (€). Northern Ireland, like the other constituent nations of the United Kingdom, uses the pound sterling (£). US dollars are not accepted. You will need to exchange Euros for pounds if you enter the North from the Republic, and vice versa, you must exchange your pounds for Euros when entering the Republic from Northern Ireland or any other nation of the United Kingdom. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout Ireland. Irish Highlights (Summer, 7 Days) Tour

Irish Highlights (Summer, 7 Days)

Our Irish Experience was great. Our tour guide Allie was very professional and engaging. Driver Stevie was on-tine and friendly. Our hotels were all very clean and comfortable. Morning breakfasts at the hotels very full and well-rounded. We had 2-3 main attractions per day and had adequate time at each one. Ireland is beautiful and I highly recommend.

7 Day Ultimate Atlantic Adventure – Small Group Tour

Overall the tour was a great experience. The scenery on the west coast was amazing and we got to see some great attractions. My husband and I upgraded to have our own room. The beds at the first location (near Westport)were awful but the staff was very friendly. The second location was much better - they even took everyone's individual breakfast order the night before. The ferry ride to and from the Aran islands was horrible - very rough. I have never seen so many people throwing up. The bus we rode in was very comfortable but leaked in a few places when it rained. But it wasn't a big deal. Shaun was great. Very informed about all of the places we visited and about the history of Ireland. If we had more time I would have loved to do a longer tour. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Introduction to Ireland Tour

Introduction to Ireland

Our first bus tour and we were very pleased with the experience. The tour was fast paced, which was fine for us - be ready at 7am, bags out before breakfast, 8am on the bus. We saw so much more than if we would have tried it on our own. We were lucky to have a really nice group of fellow travelers, "our tour clan". Our guide Fiona, was knowledgeable and entertaining, driver Gary was perfect. Plan on doing the excursions of the Castle Banquet and the 300 year old Irish Pub, not that expensive and totally worth it.

Excellent tour and company. Tour guides and accommodations were second to none. If you want to know the real Ireland and it’s rich history in a comfortable setting and without the stress of driving you will not be disappointed. This was a trip of a lifetime and we would recommend to anyone.

I truly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend Irish Experience Tours to everyone. Our guide was fantastic! Very personable, knowledgeable and helpful. Met so many lovely people on our tour and saw so many wonderful things. Trip flowed beautifully and had a nice balance of guided tour and down time to explore on your own.

Hiking & Island Hopping - Cork & Kerry

This tour was incredible. Donncha brought Ireland to life in no other way. Literally, nearly a year later and we feel "homesick" thinking about Ireland. The trails were incredible. Every skill level could do the hikes and yet it was never boring. Best way to see Ireland in my opinion. All accomodations were lovely, food was fantastic. Donncha also have fantastic recommendations everyday on where to eat and what to check out in our free time. This will be one I remember for the rest of my life as a top favorite.

What people love about 7 day ireland tours.

Mike was amazing! We had such a great group of people, Mike was so full of knowledge about the history and culture of Ireland, and it was so laid back. We got to explore each destination at a leisurely pace and enjoyed most evenings checking out the local bars. Highly recommend!
The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.
We had a terrific time on our tour. Our guide / driver Leah was great with excellent stories and information. (Another group following a similar itinerary was equally complimentary of their guide) The company delivers what they promise and more.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Ireland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Mellows Bridge in Dublin, Ireland

Whoever named Ireland the ‘Emerald Isle’ knew exactly what they were talking about. The island country is spectacularly green, full of stunning natural wonders to feast your eyes on. If getting outdoors isn’t quite your style, the capital city of Dublin has music, drink and friendly banter like nowhere else on earth. From daring cliffs and roaring seas to famous breweries and lively nightlife, Ireland has a little bit of something for everyone.

Tour Highlights

  • Eat, sing, dance and drink your way around Temple Bar (an area on the south bank of Dublin, not just a single bar)
  • Kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle for a shot at the ‘gift of the gab’
  • Learn to pour the perfect pint at Guinness Storehouse, where beer has been brewed since 1759
  • Face the strong winds for some incredible views at the Cliffs of Moher
  • Cross the Ha’penny Bridge across the River Liffey
  • Wonder at the beehive-shaped huts of the Skellig Michael monastery

Travel Tips

  • Keep in mind that the island of Ireland is made up of two countries: the independent Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. Be prepared to use different currencies if you’re travelling over the border.
  • Be sure to pack rain gear, no matter when you travel. Ireland is generally wet, and some mountainous areas see up to 2000 mm of rain each year!
  • Consider renting a car to really take in the beautiful coastal views Ireland has to offer - but be wary of its narrow, windy roads.
  • Get ready to eat some hearty comfort food. Some must-tries are a lamb Irish stew, colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale), and a full Irish breakfast.
  • While Ireland is an English-speaking country, it may be helpful to learn some Irish slang before you go. For example, something that is “good craic” is something entertaining or fun.
  • Be prepared for some swearing.

Ireland has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Ireland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Ireland, do check out our Ireland Travel Guide for more information.

"We just went on Iconic Ireland and Ashford Castle and had a wonderful time. This was our first bus tour and we didn't know quite what to expect, however, we couldn't have had a more perfect time. Ireland is a beautiful country and we were stunned and thrilled with all the beauty we were able to see. The hotels were great - some definitely better than others but all were comfortable. My only complaint was that our last hotel had no ac and Ireland was experiencing a heat wave so the fan didn't help very much. That wasn't anyone's fault and I just went with the flow. Barbara (our guide) and Marina (our driver) were great and genuinely seemed to be concerned with everyone's comfort. The grande finale of Ashford Castle was incredible. Such a beautiful place and to be able to stay a night there was incredible. I ended up doing the Hawk Walk and horseback riding and I would recommend both - especially the hawk walk to anyone - I think people who are good riders would probably get to do more than we did but it was still great. I would recommend Brendan and this trip to anyone. Perfect amount of down time and activity. Loved it!"

Ireland Tour Selection Trips

  • Walking and biking tours of Ireland can be wonderful, taking you through forests, across pastures and down small country roads you otherwise wouldn’t know existed.
  • One good reason for Americans to take a guided tour of Ireland : driving (on often narrow roads with standard transmission cars) is on the left.
  • Come prepared for rain (“liquid sunshine”) at any time, keeping in mind that this is what keeps Ireland so green.
  • While Ireland is a bit smaller than the U.S. state of Indiana, it’s rich in culture, scenery, and history, so don’t feel you have to see it all in one trip – though a number of tours do hit many of the highlights.
  • Dublin has the youngest population in Europe , making it a good choice for millennials.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

Ireland is open to foreign travelers.

Upon arrival, visitors must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine and fill out a COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form to indicate where they intend to self isolate.

Read more about  Countries Reopening for Tourism

Ireland tours are available all year round, but it does get quite chilly. Often tours in Ireland feature a lot of time outdoors along the coast, so be sure to dress warmly!

Walking is a very popular activity on many Ireland trips. It is advised to bring a pair of warm, sturdy walking shoes or broken in hiking boots to protect your feet from blisters.

What to expect from a tour in Ireland

Touring Ireland is a wonderful experience, full of jovial fun, fascinating history, and of course a pint or two. If you enjoy beer, it’s safe to say you will enjoy traveling in Ireland. If you don’t enjoy beer, don’t worry, but be prepared for a few pub visits. You may like the taste of beer by the end of your trip!

American travelers in particular may be surprised by the pub atmosphere in Ireland and the wider UK. The Irish pub experience is far more family friendly than a typical bar or pub in the United States. Going by yourself to hang out with a book is perfectly acceptable.

But if you’re a more outgoing person, and enjoy meeting and hanging out with locals, the pub is the place to be; and you will be considered a local by the end of your trip if you go consistently. This is one reason why Ireland tours for singles are so popular.

Other than whiskey and beer, Ireland has much to offer in the way of history . Guided tours of Ireland will definitely touch on some of this, in varying degrees depending on which tour you choose.

Ireland Tour Routes

You may be wondering whether your trip in Ireland will visit both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland . In most cases, Ireland tours do visit both. The Republic of Ireland is dramatically larger than Northern Ireland, so you will spend most of your time in this area.

Some likely stops on this part of your tour include the Ring of Kerry, a stunning scenic route dotted with various historical sites. The Cliffs of Moher, which are only a short distance from Dublin, are another popular spot. The only thing that makes these breathtaking cliffs more stunning is the powerful, heart-stopping wind that blows in off the sea.

Northern Ireland is home to the Titanic Museum in Belfast, a very popular tour attraction. Giants Causeway is also a main attraction in Northern Ireland, especially for being a Game of Thrones filming location. Finally, your small group tour in Northern Ireland will likely include some historical components about recent conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in this part of Ireland.

Ireland Walking Tours

Because of Ireland’s natural beauty, relative accessibility and general safety, going on hiking and walking tours is one popular way of visiting the country. Going on a walking tour around Ireland is a great way to remove yourself from the routine, and place yourself in an otherworldly landscape.

If you decide to visit the Western coast of the country, you will be confronted with contrasting, dramatic stone landscapes and beautiful mountains. This region is known for  both its rough seas, and its population of wildflowers.

If you want to experience the entire island, consider a coast-to-coast walk. On this route, you are sure to experience many more cultural landmarks, including the some of the earliest Christian landmarks.

If the call of England and Scotland are too irresistible to you, you are in luck, as many tours combine visiting the three, similar locations. This way you can get triple the dosage of intense historical drama, jaw-dropping natural landscapes, and good drink and pub food.

What is the weather like in Ireland?

As it is nearly surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland’s climate is both kept temperate by the water, and also made irregular because of it. As a result, Ireland’s weather is relatively unpredictable -- but not extreme.

When traveling to Ireland in the winter, you should dress warmly, but don’t worry about freezing temperatures. It rarely drops much below 46 degrees , and a result, don’t expect any heavy snows either.

In the summer, temperatures are in generally in the upper 50’s , and reach highs of around 66 degrees. Unlike in Scotland , you never have to worry about extremely long rain spells, nor will it rain consistently enough to make you wish you had your own pair of wellies. Either bring a light rain jacket just in case, or use every drizzle as an excuse to grab a Guinness in a cozy pub -- the choice is up to you!
