Cornell University

Ithaca, NY •

  • • Rating 3.79 out of 5   2,074 reviews

Alum: Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cornell University. I was within the Policy Analysis and Management Department. Our courses were rigorous, but our professors encouraged collaboration with our peers through group papers, presentation, and problem sets. In addition, my peers were often happy and excited to work together. Outside of the PAM department, I was heavily involved with the Einhorn Center for Community-Engagement. Through my role at the Center, I really learned how to integrate community-engagement within my classes and professional work. I found that Cornell had many opportunities for students to engage with the Greater Ithaca community. ... Read 2,074 reviews

Boston University

Boston, MA •

  • • Rating 3.69 out of 5   3,633 reviews

Alum: Boston University is a huge undergraduate school. Therefore, you really have to seek out opportunity and friendships to find them -- it's not the kind of school where everyone knows each other's name. I barely knew the other members of my own major (Neurobiology within the Biology department). However, that's not necessarily the case, as there can be much stronger camaraderie in other departments like the College of Engineering, or even among Physics majors. While there is not a strong sense of school spirit and tradition at BU, unless you specifically seek it out (for example, I was in the BU pep band), I really appreciated the opportunities offered by such a large research institution. I got to break into cutting edge research by connecting with investigators at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. I discovered a passion for data science on top of my aspiration for a career in medicine. Plus, it's BOSTON!!! It's an exciting city to live in while young. ... Read 3,633 reviews

Senior: Going to UGA was the best decision I could have made! It is a great combination between academics and a social scene. I felt like there was always something to do, but there also wasn't immense pressure to go with the crowd. The campus is beautiful with many places to study and hang out with friends. Athens as a whole has also been so much fun to live in. It was more of a small town that I originally expected, but I learned to love its charm. As for academics, I have found great mentorship from my professors, and I have genuinely enjoyed every program I have gotten involved in on campus. There is a lot of freedom to explore different majors and take courses outside of your direct line of study. I always felt challenged but never like I was being given impossible work. ... Junior: FSU has a beautiful campus and outstanding athletics. The student body is very diverse and is known as one of the friendliest campuses in the country. The academics are very challenging, but ample tutoring and help is available. The sciences need more professors and better professors and more course offerings. This is something the school should really focus on. Dorms are typical dorms, definitely need dehumidifiers to avoid mold issues. The Greek life is very robust as is the club scene, but plenty of other activities to do and clubs to join outside of those. Junior: I have absolutely loved my experience at The Ohio State University for these past two years. I am actually a transfer student and I was a little worried about coming in to a brand new school halfway through my freshman year. However, all of the amazing faculty at Ohio State made it super easy to transition to a new school. I was able to get involved with student organizations from day one of being on campus. I love how many different ways there are to get involved; there truly is something for everyone here. Since it is a larger school, it is a little more dependent on your own self to get involved and take advantage of all the things that are offered. I also love having the city of Columbus to take advantage of! There are so many things to do and it makes it super easy to get off campus. I also love how proud everyone is to be a Buckeye. Alum: Academically challenging school that heavily focuses on STEM majors. If you are in liberal arts, there is a nice community but it is small and not nearly as funded as the STEM programs. Campus is walkable filled with nice community spaces and plenty of libraries, cafes, and rooms to study and meet with classmates. A lot of school spirit centered around the athletics. Most people live off campus starting second year. The apartments in Chauncey Square are an excellent location and close to night life spots and restaurants. Campus is very diverse and there are many opportunities to join clubs and student groups. Purdue is only 1 or 2 hours away from two different international airports, and shuttle busses run nearly everyday between those airports and Purdue campus, making travel easier for international or out of state students. Alum: I attended MSU as a minority student with about 40,000 in the total student body. This number was comprised of approximately 30,000 Caucasian students. As a minority coming from an urban background where most residents shared my race this was a culture shock. Programs are available to assist minorities but many were student organized and limited to University and Faculty based. I survived because of the Office of Supportive Services. I wish there was a similar program in the Colleges as well as the University as a whole. OSS provided counseling, employment and funding for minority students. It was very difficult understanding the accents of foreign professors and I wish they had more African-American professors on staff. That change alone would have been great to see as an aspiring scholar. As such, culturally would have been more aware of the dynamics of a classroom where I was the only student of color. Ultimately, I graduated in 4 years but I felt like an Alien sometimes! ... Read 6,267 reviews

Alum: I thoroughly enjoyed my overall experience at GWU! Although guidance pertaining to my studies/next steps following my education was sometimes difficult to seek (I graduated with a BA in Psychological & Brain Sciences), professors were receptive to sharing their knowledge on this matter and offered their perspective whenever applicable. It merely seems that a student needs to advocate for themself and actively search for the answers they're looking for -- it won't be offered on a platter. I found this to be the case with GWU's academic advising. Nonetheless, the academics were spectacular. I received a very well-rounded education and was surrounded by a great community. The staff, professors, and students all left a positive impression. Plus, I established meaningful friendships and connections that I know will last forever. Alum: I had an incredible experience at Oklahoma State. The campus is beautiful and the University is always out making it look top notch with landscaping and keeping it clean. The people you’ll meet are what makes Oklahoma State special. Most everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. I remember being really homesick in the beginning but Oklahoma State and Stillwater quickly became home to me and the people and the the locals played a big roll in that. As for Stillwater itself, it’s a small, blue collar town that slowly is coming up. The people who live locally in Stillwater are just as if not more friendly than the people you’ll meet on campus. Stillwater has a slower pace of living and is definitely more rural but there is still plenty of fun local restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and other activities to go to or participate in with more coming. Once you learn to appreciate Stillwater for what it has as opposed to what is doesn’t have you’ll love it. Go Pokes! ... Read 3,726 reviews

Featured Review: Alum says I had an incredible experience at Oklahoma State. The campus is beautiful and the University is always out making it look top notch with landscaping and keeping it clean. The people you’ll meet are what makes Oklahoma State special. Most everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. I remember being really homesick in the beginning but Oklahoma State and Stillwater... As for Stillwater itself, it’s a small, blue collar town that slowly is coming up. The people who live locally in Stillwater are just as if not more friendly than the people you’ll meet on campus.... Go Pokes! .

Freshman: Even though I am a strictly online student, my experience at Arizona State University so far as been amazing! The class work is very manageable, and I can get all my work done by the end of the week. The professors do an amazing job with making the material easy to understand, with video explanations and links to multiple resources for further explanation! As I continue my educational journey through Arizona State University, I hope to network myself with professors and my peers. I want to do study abroad opportunities to meet new people and experience something different! Something I would like to be changed is the amount of online clubs and organizations available. Being an online student has its pros and cons, and one of them is feeling distant from the school and peers. I want there to be more clubs for online students so they can feel connected to the school in whatever state or country they reside in! ... Read 11,803 reviews

Sophomore: I really enjoy the social aspect of the University of Massachusetts. Since it’s such a big school, it’s an amazing way to meet new people and create great college experiences. Another positive is the food provided at Umass, as it is recognized as #1 in college dining. There is great variety and you can definitely get your moneys worth with the meal plan! The only negative I’ve found with the time I’ve spent at this university is the big classes. Of course this depends on your major, but majority of the classes at UMass consist of 200-300 people; very big lectures. It makes learning complex topics even harder and often times the professor push a lot of their responsibility onto the TA’s (student teaching assistants). While some times these extra help opportunities can be helpful, it’s hard to find the time to actually attend these sessions, especially when working a job or trying to balance other classes. Overall, the University of Massachusetts is a great option. ... Read 5,450 reviews

Senior: Lots of great opportunities to be involved on or off campus, and lots of ways to have fun as well. Some really great professors, some not so much. My biggest complaint has been my experience with my academic advisors, I think I've had 4 because they don't seem to keep the job for long. Lots of miscommunication and waiting weeks for responses for things that are urgent. I have been able to get things figured out on my own for the most part, but it shouldn't be that way. Also, they just changed how class registration works, and it's a mess. It is also super common to stumble upon incorrect, outdated information about classes/majors/requirements, because a lot of old pages of the school website are still available. ... Freshman: The University of Alabama has a beautiful campus. There are always fun events and social activities to participate in. I am currently in my freshman year at the school, and so far it has been nothing but amazing. I live in the dorms and walk to all my classes. I am in Greek life and joined informally in the second semester. Not only have I made friends from just going to class but also going to lunch at the dining hall, and where I live. If you don't like parties and going out, there is plenty for you to still do. Many organizations and events have activities where you don't drink or party and you just meet new people and get connected socially. I love going out with my friends and also going to campus events. The campus is very walkable and safe during all parts of the day, but still walk with a friend or buddy to ease your parents' minds. Once you visit the campus there is no going back or going to another school! ... Read 4,802 reviews

The ♦ course is considered critical. The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.

College of Business

Sustainable hospitality management, b.s. sustainable hospitality management.

The B.S. Sustainable Hospitality Management degree program provides students with a broad foundation in hospitality, sustainability, leadership and management, operations, marketing, and information technology. Sustainable Hospitality Management majors develop skills and understanding in hospitality business management that incorporates planet, people, profit, ethics, and equity with a concentration in either sustainable hotel, resort, and event management or sustainable ecotourism management.

Concentrations:

  • Sustainable Hotel, Resort and Event Management
  • Sustainable Ecotourism Management

The major provides students with local, regional, and global perspectives on current and pressing sustainability issues and problems within the hospitality industry.

The central core of the program focuses on "sustainability plus", going beyond sustainability to address issues in terms of the five-dimension lens of People, Ethics, Equity, Planet and Profit.

Students gain hands-on knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in hospitality, including hotels, restaurants, resorts, festivals and events, ecotourism, attractions, and eco recreation with a focus on "green" jobs in business and industry.

USA Launches New Hospitality and Tourism Concentrations

Joy Crawford

The University of South Alabama Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the College of Education and Professional Studies is launching two new concentrations, global leadership and events marketing and management, under its bachelor’s degree program.

For those who seek to shape the future of a vibrant and evolving industry, South’s hospitality and tourism concentrations will start in the fall semester of 2024.

“With the new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management, our program in Hospitality and Tourism Management is uniquely positioned to provide students with the knowledge and skills that hospitality and tourism employers demand,” said Dr. Angela Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. “This will, in turn, lead to successful careers for our students in the fast-growing areas of leisure and hospitality. Whether a student desires to be the operations manager for a cruise line or an event planner for a resort, this program will help them grow as professionals through meaningful experiences provided by our community and industry partners.”

The servant leadership being modeled to South students will help them stand out in an industry that will produce future leaders through innovative business-education partnerships.

“The new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management were developed through a robust planning process and were not arbitrary,” said Dr. Khal Nusair, chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism and Management. “Over the duration of a three-step planning method, we analyzed hospitality and tourism programs at the state and national levels, sought the feedback of our advisory board and gathered data from industry partners and alumni.”

In the global leadership concentration, students build problem-solving, communication, critical thinking and analytical skills to excel in the global hospitality and tourism industry.

“It’s important to note these specialized programs will strengthen our existing industry ties and develop new partnership opportunities with stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism industry,” Nusair said. “Thanks to hospitality and tourism industry partners’ guidance and support during the program restructuring efforts, the program has been positively transformed. This couldn’t have been accomplished without their dedication and commitment to our success.”

According to President and CEO of Visit Mobile David Clark, who also serves as president of South’s Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board Executive Committee, the new concentrations will open doors to many career opportunities.

“USA continues to raise the bar with its education and career offerings to help students earn the right to lead,” Clark said. “Adding global leadership and events marketing and management will significantly enhance students’ ability to make a huge impact on their career path and advancement.”

  • Masters Tournament experience a 'masterclass in hospitality' for Husker HRTM students

Husker HRTM students and Associate Professor Ajai Ammachathram pose for a group photo at the Masters Tournament

24 Apr 2024

Earlier this month, students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's hospitality, restaurant and tourism management program traveled to Augusta National Golf Club to provide hospitality services at the 2024 Masters Tournament. The group of students traveled with Associate Professor and HRTM Program Director Ajai Ammachathram to the event April 4-16. It was the 10th time that Husker students have had the opportunity to help at the Masters. Three of those students - sophomore Abby Cantrell, junior Lydia Tobin and freshman Lyv Williams – share about their experiences in these blog posts.

Abby Cantrell – sophomore – Malcolm, Nebraska

The promise of unforgettable experiences is at the heart of the hospitality industry, and that is what the Masters Tournament provides: an unforgettable experience. It is a truly unforgettable experience for both the patrons and tournament employees. The exceptional level of service demanded fosters a unique learning environment for hospitality students nationwide. Since this was my second year working the Masters, I had the privilege of being the student lead from UNL. In this position, I had to coordinate with Augusta National’s representatives, our UNL faculty leader, Dr. Ajai Ammachathram, and the nine other UNL students who got to work the tournament.

We are sent to the tournament to work as servers or bartenders in the hospitality cabins and suites, and our focus is providing patrons with exemplary service that will enhance their Masters experience. However, our supervisors understand that this prestigious event provides us valuable learning opportunities and once in a lifetime experiences. Some highlights include acquiring new hospitality and communication skills from my experiences and supervisor’s expertise as a hospitality and event industry professional, building connections with my coworkers and patrons, walking the course during practice rounds, and seeing the iconic Amen Corner.

Skill development was a key takeaway from my experience. After working 10 days for 8-14 hours a day, I can say that I have enhanced my communication skills, flexibility, teamwork, and customer service skills. In addition, I now pay greater attention to detail because I saw firsthand how much the little details truly matter. A combination of my experiences in the cabin and around the beautiful course made for a memorable experience that will last me a lifetime. I am thankful for my time at Augusta National, and I hope to return next year!

Lydia Tobin – junior – Waukee, Iowa

My experience at the 2024 Masters Tournament was framed by azaleas, putting greens, and pimento cheese sandwiches. Augusta National Golf Club (AGNC), the backdrop for the tournament, is unlike anything I have ever seen. The exclusivity, privacy, and secrecy surrounding the club make it a mystery to the outside world. When I accepted my role as a server in one of AGNC’s hospitality suites, I had no clue what to expect. The more I researched and googled ahead of time, the more unclear my mental expectations became. All I had to go off of were stories from the servers that preceded me.

I recall the first morning on AGNC property, outfitted in my three-piece suit uniform (complete with a bowtie), and pulling up in front of a row of picture-perfect cottages. These cottages, which looked like they were straight off the cover of a Better Homes & Gardens magazine, were my place of employment for the next nine days. Little did I know on day one that the Flowering Peach Suite would be host to inside jokes with coworkers, sincere connections with patrons, and the truest sense of teamwork I’ve ever felt by day nine.

I’m walking away from this experience with essentially a masterclass in hospitality under my belt. Augusta National Golf Club’s high standard of service and impeccable reputation sets the Masters Tournament apart as such a highly regarded event, year after year. The melding of “Midwest nice” and “Southern hospitality” elevated my and my patron’s experiences. I feel lucky to have been selected to represent the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism Management program at this year’s Masters Tournament and I look forward to doing it all over again next April.

Lyv Williams – freshman – Columbus, Nebraska

The Masters Golf Tournament is an event that I never thought I would have the honor to experience. This opportunity felt like merely a dream until I was in the airport with the rest of the UNL hospitality students, eager to get to Augusta, Georgia. As a first-year hospitality student, I had no idea what to expect, apart from the exciting stories from returning students. From the moment we set foot on the grounds at Augusta National, we were not only met with beautiful sights, but also top tier hospitality. The first day was enough for me to know that I was going to have the best week with the most ambitious and hard-working group of people I have ever been a part of.

Reflecting now, my experience at the Masters exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite parts of the trip was growing close with likeminded individuals from schools across the country. With my amazing team I learned the importance of teamwork, attention to detail, and to always look out for one another. These skills, along with the technical skills that I developed while serving, are going to benefit me for the rest of my career. The best memories that I made were celebrating one another’s successes throughout the week no matter how small. On the eve of the very last day, my friends and I all went to dinner to celebrate our hard work. Making those unforgettable memories was so worth missing out on an extra hour of sleep!

Going into the week I was expecting the work to be difficult, but nothing was harder than saying goodbye to the wonderful people I made connections with at Augusta. Not only did I get to work alongside some of the most amazing individuals, but I also learned the most important part of hospitality: making meaningful connections with the guests. When asked about my favorite part of the Masters, it was without a doubt having the ability to put a smile on patrons’ faces. From an outside perspective my time spent at the Masters may have seemed like work, but to me it was so much more. The biggest takeaway I have is that hospitality is not just about service, it is about creating the best atmosphere and experience possible for the guests. That is precisely the reason I love this field of work so much, and why I cannot wait to pursue a career as a hospitality professional.
