The 2022 Hyundai i20 N Is a Five-Door Firecracker Tuned for Maximum Joy

Some hot hatches try to pair power and speed with a docile nature for daily driving. The Hyundai i20 N thinks that’s stupid.

Hyundai Reviews photo

In the last two decades, Hyundai has become a fully-fledged automaker, expanding on its traditionally affordable commuter offerings to build out a complete range of vehicles . The 2022 Hyundai i20 N joins that fleet as an entry-level member of the brand’s celebrated N sporting range .

It may be the baby of the N brand in both dimensions and price, but not in attitude. It’s a turbo hot hatch imbued with the personality of a little angry chihuahua, willing to bark and bite at its rivals no matter their size.

2022 Hyundai i20 N Review Specs

  • Base price (as tested):  $32,990 AUD ($33,990 AUD)
  • Powertrain: 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder | 6-speed manual | front-wheel drive
  • Horsepower: 201 @ 6000 rpm
  • Torque: 202 lb-ft @ 1,750 to 4,500 rpm
  • Curb weight: 2,722 pounds
  • 0-60: 6.2 seconds
  • Australian fuel economy : 26 mpg urban | 41 extra urban | 34 combined
  • Quick take: The track car handling and thrumming engine are always daring you to whip it hard down a back road.
  • Score: 8.5/10

The base i20 is Hyundai’s second-smallest offering worldwide, sneaking in above the titchy i10 city car. It comes in two major forms: the smaller BI3 chassis covers the Indian market for size-related tax reasons, while the European BC3 covers most of the rest of the world. It’s a simple five-door hatch that’s perfect for grocery runs and getting children to their various schools.

However, when it comes to the i20 N, Hyundai didn’t simply warm it over, slap on some stickers, and call it done. No, to earn that vaunted N badge, the humble hatch got transformed into a surprisingly focused weapon that’s happy to sacrifice comfort for sporting prowess. Walk up and you’ll spot its pedigree at a glance. The low stance, aggressive side skirts, and rear wing all give it away if you somehow missed the plentiful N badges and red trim on the body.

Hyundai Reviews photo

For this specific application, Hyundai dropped in its rorty 1.6-liter turbo-four, good for 201 horsepower, with a bespoke turbo and intercooler, under the hood. The chassis was granted extra reinforcement at 12 crucial points, stiffening it up for more responsive handling and less twist. There are also reinforced top mounts and knuckles in the front suspension to handle spirited driving and high cornering loads better.

Naturally, upgraded shocks, springs, and sway bars play their part by lowering the car significantly and firming up the ride. It’s all combined with a quicker steering rack for a pointier feel. There are bigger brakes, too—a nice touch from Hyundai, like the parent that really just hopes you can stay out of trouble.

On paper, then, it’s clear Hyundai wanted to build a real hot hatch rather than a sticker-pack special. As the photos suggest, it certainly looks the part, but does it hold up when turning a wheel in anger?

Hyundai Reviews photo

Driving the Hyundai i20 N

Open the front door, and you’re reminded just how far Hyundai has come in quality terms from the mid-’90s. There’s a satisfying clunk to the latch, and the door swings open to reveal a comfortable yet sporty interior finished in mostly black. The bolstered seats are near enough to racing buckets and give you the right impression from the get-go. A giant red rev-match button on the sport-trimmed steering wheel is a further reminder of the car’s temperament, and blue backlighting in the doors adds a certain sense of theater.

The show only continues with a touch of the start button. The turbo-four spurts to life with a mischievous, low thrum that feels naughty in the best possible way.

Hyundai Reviews photo

It’s only when you get rolling, though, that you realize Hyundai really did go ham on the i20 N. The clutch is amazingly tight, to the point where I actually stalled the car a couple of times on the first two days of the review. The bite point is surprisingly narrow and engagement is sharp enough that you might struggle at times to pull away lazily from a stop. With only 8,000 km (approximately 4,970 miles) on the clock, though, this is something that might wear in over time.

The suspension is also racier than you might expect. It’s a low car, and the ride is incredibly firm. It’s never crashy or noisy, though, and it feels intimately well controlled. Either way, the handling is more go-kart than family hatch. Paired with the sticky Pirelli P-Zero rubber, it’s a little shocking how much grip it seems to have. Yank on the steering wheel and you’ve got a slalom weapon, helped by the quick-ratio rack that goes a long way to changing the persona of the car.

The i20 N ends up feeling like your friend’s finely fettled track day car, tuned over years for handling and grip to the exclusion of anything else. Of course, that’s precisely what it is, just substitute in the engineers of Hyundai’s N division for that guy you met at the circuit with the surprisingly fast Civic.

Hyundai Reviews photo

Take the i20 N out on a winding road through the hills and you’ll be rewarded for your trouble. It’s a car that knows what it’s built for, and will even prod you to shift into N Mode when the GPS detects an S-bend coming up ahead. Hit the blue button on the wheel and the exhaust opens up, the steering gets weightier and rev-matching is engaged to make sure you shift like a pro. The throttle response is amped up, too, and the daring can also turn off traction control if desired.

In N mode, the i20 N blossoms into its perfect form. You might expect a small displacement turbo engine to suffer from lag, but it pulls hard. Max torque is available from just 1,750 rpm. With grip for days, it’s intoxicating to grab a bootfull of throttle and feel the mechanical LSD yank the car through the back half of a corner. A zero-to-60 time of 6.2 seconds does leave it a little slower than its bigger brother, the i30 N. Similarly, cars like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R will tend to run away in a straight line. When it comes to carving up the canyons, though, there’s more than enough grunt to dip into.

The quick response only makes it all the more enjoyable. It gives the i20 N a feeling like it’s always tugging at the leash, dying to sprint off down the way in pursuit of a distant set of tail lights. It’s a heady thrill, the way you get caught between the dashboard goading you into N mode and the engine daring you to punch it.

Hyundai Reviews photo

Once you’re traveling at a good enough clip, you’ll probably find yourself approaching a corner at some point. It’s then that you’ll reach for the excellent brakes, which come with an exquisite level of pedal-feel. They’ll stop the car hard enough to scare the crap out of your passengers while providing perfect control under use.

Reports from track testing are that the brakes are able to hold up to lap after lap of track abuse without fading, too. That’s likely also a gift of the i20 N’s curb weight of just 2,668 pounds. It’s a featherweight compared to bigger rivals in the hot hatch space, like the i30 N (3,351 pounds) or Golf GTI (3,172 pounds). It comes in lighter than its closer rivals, too, like the Fiesta ST and Polo GTI at 2,782 pounds and 2,832 pounds, respectively.

Hyundai Reviews photo

As a package, the i20 N is a dream to whip along a fast road. There’s not so much power that you’ll scare yourself, but plenty there to enjoy. It’s huge fun to dance the car around, squeezing the pedal just a little more to see how hard the car will stick as you fling it ‘round a sweeper.

Coming hot into the hairpins is where you’ll feel really cool, though. Rev-matching on the downshifts and the stellar anchors will let you go wayyyyy deep under braking. Of course, heel-toe masters can substitute their own skill for the computer as desired.

With the exhaust to N for naughty, it’ll bark nicely on its way up the rev range, though it won’t blow out your eardrums thanks to the well-insulated cabin. The real treats are the rips and crackles when you’re decelerating hard into a corner, perhaps fantasizing that you have some heroic reason to be screaming along at such a rapid pace.

Hyundai Reviews photo

Perhaps most alluring, though, is the purring growl when that performance motor is humming at a stop. It’s a proper tuner-car sound, and it inspires you to give other meeker road users the evil eye from behind your expensive sunglasses. Even better is the way the idle lifts menacingly when you first touch the N button.

The whole feel of the car is that it’s built for attack. One could imagine that shaving down lap times week after week at the track would be a very satisfying experience as one learned the car. It’s short of a roll cage and fire extinguisher, but that’s about all it really needs to be a track day special. Make a few suspension mods and add a little ground clearance and you’d have a road rally weapon, too.

That razor-sharp feel does come at a cost, though. As the most budget-friendly member of the N family, the i20 N isn’t full of fancy active suspension that can soften up on demand. The only transmission option is the six-speed manual.

Thus, the i20 N can be a little bit out of sorts when it comes to daily duties. Eco mode or even Normal will calm the engine down and quell the exhaust to reasonable levels. However, it’s still a car that wants to go at heart. The suspension remains firm no matter the situation, and you’ll want to be cautious around speed bumps and driveways if you want to avoid scraping the front lip.

Hyundai Reviews photo

The clutch is where you’ll find the most frustration on a day-to-day basis. Perhaps it calms down after the first 10,000 miles, but it remained tight as a drum during my week-long test. It’s a car you wouldn’t want to get stuck in stop-start traffic, nor regularly back out of a steep driveway. It’s finicky enough to be annoying in these conditions.

Other than the dynamics, though, the i20 N acquits itself well in daily life. There’s plenty of room for four or five passengers, and the five-door body style makes getting in and out a breeze. The boot is small but well-proportioned with a nice low load height. If anything, this makes loading in groceries easier as there’s less space for them to roll around. If you need to move something bigger, you can always drop the back seats down.

The engine isn't much to look at, but it sounds fantastic.

The Highs and Lows

Aesthetically, the i20 N is an absolute delight. It looks the business , for lack of a better term. It’s a car you can’t miss in Performance Blue with the on-trend black roof and pillars delivering a chic two-tone effect. The bodykit, finished in gray and red, takes things up another notch in intensity. Hyundai has created its own visual style that screams performance without hitting on tired JDM tuner tropes from yesteryear. This is a Korean take on what a hot hatch should be, and a shining example of the Hyundai N design language.

Inside, the i20 N is well-appointed, with materials and finishes that feel right for a hot hatch. There aren’t any major missteps like slippery leather seats or obviously cheap plastics that fall to hand. The seats are perfect for hugging you in the turns, though larger-bodied drivers would do well to check they’re comfortable before committing to the purchase.

Two maps! I don't know why it's allowed to do this.

The infotainment system does have some curious quirks, though. Most of the time, it’s used in a two-pane mode. This allows you to view the navigation system while also seeing what’s playing on the radio, for example. However, all too often, it would fall into displaying maps on both panes, which is visually maddening to look at. A simple swipe fixes the problem but it shouldn’t really be an option in the first place.

The digital dash cluster does a decent job. It’s at its best in N mode, where the tachometer and speedometer are both in their most legible format. In comparison, the white-backed simulated gauges of Normal mode are difficult to read at a glance. I found myself relying on the numerical speed display instead, which took up space that would otherwise display useful data like trip distances or fuel economy metrics. A head-up display would be a great addition here, even if it only displayed speed.

The power windows are nice, and operate smoothly and quickly without a lot of fuss. However, it’s 2022, and I was disappointed to find that only the driver’s window had the auto up/down feature. Alas!

Cruise control is present and accounted for, along with the typical lane-keeping and lane departure warning systems. With that said, don’t get caught out: there’s no radar cruise available. You’re 100 percent responsible for braking in the i20 N, so don’t you forget it. I, uh… you know what? Never mind.

Hyundai Reviews photo

Competition and the Market

The test car was given the hero colors: Performance Blue body, with the $1,000 black contrasting roof finish. It’s the only option available on the i20 N, along with a $595 premium paint charge for Dragon Red or Phantom Black on the body.

As far as the competition goes, the Hyundai i20 N holds a unique position in the compact hot hatch marketplace, selling at $32,990 AUD MSRP before on-road costs. In Australia, at least, it comes in at a similar price point to both the Ford Fiesta ST ($33,490 AUD) and well cheaper than the VW Polo GTI ($38,750 AUD).

Hyundai Reviews photo

Compared to its rivals, the i20N goes the furthest towards performance over comfort. All three cars post similar power figures of around 200 hp, weigh about the same, and come as five-door hatches. But it’s the Hyundai that goes balls-to-the-wall with the track-ready brakes and suspension tune, super-pointy handling, and gooey, sticky rubber.

The rivals might be nicer for taking grandma down the shops, it’s true. But if you want a car that’s going to up your pulse on a regular basis, the i20 N is the one to choose. Between the hot blue paint and the lairy body kit, it’s the bad influence friend that’s always pushing you to just have a bit of a go.

Value and Verdict

The i20 N is a car that flirts with you in an attempt to get you to push its buttons… its N buttons, that is. In this respect, it’s better at eliciting a response than even loftier rides like Toyota’s much-celebrated GR Yaris . If that’s the kind of thrill you want out of life, the i20 N’s the one for you.

Overall, it’s a car to be celebrated. Hyundai could have simply warmed over the engine and thrown some stickers on the i20 and called it a day. Instead, it went hard and built a car that any teenager would get into all kinds of trouble with. For those of us a little more mature, it’s a car that reminds us not to be afraid to move that needle into the red now and then.

What Is Hyundai Smart Cruise Control, and Is It the Same as Adaptive Cruise Control?

Adaptive cruise control , optional on many new vehicles today, is one of the latest advanced car safety features. It’s very similar to cruise control, which allows you to set your car to a certain speed. However, the systems offered by automakers like Hyundai use radars to determine when neighboring cars get too close.

Hyundai vehicles also have their own version of adaptive cruise control named Hyundai Smart Cruise Control. Is there anything that makes it better than regular adaptive cruise control? Here’s what the folks at Rosen Hyundai have to say.

All the Hyundai Smart Cruise Control’s features

Since it’s a cruise control system, you can set Hyundai Smart Cruise control at a specific highway speed. It doesn’t mean the car can drive itself, but that’s less pressure that you have to apply to the accelerator. It’s a useful feature to have for road trips, especially if you easily get sore limbs.

Hyundai Smart Cruise Control also has the same elements of adaptive cruise control. The radar system emits waves that reflect off of the car in front of yours, detecting its speed. If the preceding car speeds up or slows down, the Smart Cruise Control adjusts your vehicle’s speed accordingly. It also has a Stop and Go setting, which tracks the driving behaviors of cars around you during traffic.

If the car ahead of you stops unexpectedly, the Smart Cruise Control brakes itself as well. The radar waves are so fast that there’s no delay between the data received from the radars and the resulting functions. Oftentimes, humans can’t react as quickly in emergency situations, resulting in fender benders or collisions. The Cruise Control button is located on the steering wheel, so it’s easy to engage or disengage at a moment’s notice.

The Smart Cruise Control’s radars also won’t be limited by hazardous weather conditions, such as heavy rain or fog. Rosen Hyundai also boasts that Smart Cruise Control is highly reliable, even inspiring some new lunar excursion technology.

What makes Hyundai Smart Cruise Control different?

Our latest evolution of Smart Cruise Control, the Hyundai SCC-Machine Learning, makes autonomous driving a lot less awkward. Learn from its creators how #AI technology helps make this happen here: https://t.co/28HGpDSD63 pic.twitter.com/KtDUDMaKZH — Hyundai Worldwide (@Hyundai_Global) August 6, 2020

Many of the functions offered on Smart Cruise Control can be found on any adaptive cruise control system. However, the Hyundai software offers one really useful perk: the front-mounted radars can still work when the vehicle’s grille gets dirty. Wintery conditions can cause your car’s grille to become covered in snow and slush, which can be hard to remove.

If you’re driving during a blizzard, you can’t really keep your grille clean as you’re driving. Adaptive cruise control is essential in severe weather conditions, especially when drivers around you might struggle to see clearly. Hyundai Smart Control is also usually included in its cars’ standard features, whereas other automakers might make you pay extra.

Which vehicles have Hyundai Smart Cruise control?

Many of the latest Hyundai vehicles have Smart Cruise control, including the 2021 Hyundai Sonata . It also has a nice collection of other standard safety features, like driver drowsiness monitoring, forward automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims can have blind-spot monitors, sensing any vehicle driving above 20 mph.

The Hyundai Sonata also benefits from two engine options, with great gas mileage for the base trim. The cabin feels luxurious, but taller passengers in the backseat might not have enough legroom.

The Hyundai Palisade is more spacious, able to seat up to eight riders. The first two rows are incredibly roomy, and even the third row can accommodate some adults. It only has one engine choice, but it packs enough horsepower to keep this SUV moving quickly.

Critics also report it handles well despite the added weight over its sedan siblings. Like the Sonata, the Palisade includes Hyundai Smart Cruise control in its generous library of standard driver’s aids.

Does Hyundai I20 Have Cruise Control?

The new i20 does indeed have a cruise control feature.

In This Article...

The Asta 1.0L DCT and Asta 1.2L Petrol IVT variations will no longer be produced.

Hyundai intends to include options like an electric sunroof, cruise control, and automated climate control on less expensive MY2022 i20 models, according to a document that has been leaked.

Automatic climate control and cruise control are standard on the Hyundai i20 Sportz, while the Asta version adds an electric sunroof, cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The Asta (O) trim with the highest specification will provide the voice command capability. Six new commands have been introduced by Hyundai, including a greeting, contact information, a new sport, soccer, sunroof controls, driver window control, and navigation aid.

The Hyundai i20 variant lineup will also be changed. The Asta 1.0L DCT and Asta 1.2L Petrol IVT variations will no longer be produced.

Hyundai i20 Variants Improved; Sportz Trim Adds Auto A/C, Cruise Control, and More

One of the high-end hatchbacks introduced in 2020 is the Hyundai i20. The cost of this updated model has increased when compared to the Elite i20, making it one of the priciest premium hatchbacks. Hyundai has changed the i20’s variations in light of the 2022 Maruti Baleno and the Altroz’s dual-clutch automatic transmission from Tata. Now let’s examine the recent changes!

The entry-level Magna variant’s silver wheel caps have been changed to a gunmetal gray hue. The Sportz model, which offers the best value, now includes extras like cruise control and automatic climate control.

Similar to this, the Asta model now includes a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an electric sunroof, and cruise control. The IVT and 7-speed DCT have been eliminated from the Asta trim’s gearbox options.

The BlueLink connected car technology now allows the top-spec Asta(O) to receive voice-assisted orders. The following are the six new voice-activated commands that the South Korean automaker has added:

The Hyundai i20 is mechanically available with three engine options: 1.2L gasoline, 1.0L turbo gasoline, and 1.5L oil burner. While the 1.0L, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine produces 118 horsepower on tap with a maximum torque of 172 Nm, the four-cylinder, normally aspirated 1.2L engine produces 87 bhp of power with a peak torque of 115 Nm. The strongest of the bunch is this engine. The 1.5L diesel engine generates a respectable 250 Nm of torque and 99 horsepower of power.

The 1.2L engine comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission, however an IVT is also available. A 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission are also available for the 1.0L turbocharged gasoline engine. One and only a 6-speed stick shift is used with the oil burner.

Has the 2013 Hyundai I20 has cruise control?

Finally, Hyundai agreed and decided to discontinue the Premium specification starting in mid-2012. Cruise control was a significant piece of missing equipment, even on the Premium model.

Has the 2015 Hyundai I20 had cruise control?

However, the inside is lacking in features. There is no cruise control, and there are no controls on the steering wheel to operate the four-speaker system.

What about the Hyundai I10’s cruise control?

I recently bought a brand-new Hyundai i10 1.2 SE automatic that had been registered three days prior to my purchase. However, despite what the brochure claims, my car does not have cruise control as standard equipment.

I didn’t check the cruise control during a test drive because I figured it would be there like other amenities of the car.

Now that cruise control is not included with the automatic i10, it appears that Hyundai modified the specification. Can I refuse the vehicle?

No, you won’t have the option to decline the car. After April 2014, Hyundai only added cruise control to cars with manual transmissions.

Before making the purchase, always make sure the car you are buying has the specifications you anticipate.

What about the Hyundai I30’s cruise control?

The i30’s Advanced Smart Cruise Control uses front radar sensors to automatically accelerate and brake in order to maintain a steady speed and distance from the car in front. This technology uses the brake to bring the vehicle to a complete stop during traffic stops, then accelerates to the driver’s chosen speed as soon as the road is clear.

The 2014 Hyundai i20 has cruise control, right?

We often purchase our test vehicles directly from the manufacturer, but since I had a weekend lecture engagement in Brisbane, I leased a Hyundai i20 from Budget. This one was 20,000km old and had clearly gone through a bit more use than the normal press car.

After the i10, the Hyundai i20 is the company’s second-smallest vehicle, and it is available for less than $14,000 driveaway. In exchange, you get the automobile, a five-year warranty with no mileage restrictions, and 10 years of roadside assistance. If that’s what you want from a car, there are plenty of other options, including the Fiesta ST, Fiat 500, smaller Renaults, and the like, as well as the Mazda2, which my colleague Higgins rated quite highly. Hyundai claims it is nimble, agile, eye-catching, and has plenty of power, but I’d say they must be living in a parallel universe. Or there’s this, I suppose.

The i20 is essentially a small, cheap, no-fuss no-frills small car that’s terrific value and quite easy to drive, doing its job in an inoffensively bland sort of way.

Any Australian will be familiar with the switchgear and controls, and while the harsh plastics may not be sumptuous, they are at least durable. In this instance, cheap does not imply cheesy. Although the sound and Bluetooth system isn’t great, there is a separate USB input in addition to the standard 12v connector. The interior vinyl of the car has a few very tiny scratches, but overall, I believe it would endure better than most and as long as any other car.

I spent some time in the second row with no issues, and there is a good amount of space in the boot. Despite its diminutive exterior proportions, the front doesn’t feel crowded. I’m grateful that there is a full-sized alloy spare wheel, thanks to Hyundai. That’s a wonderful move, even for a city car, and the i20 ought to rise in your shortlist simply because of it. It won’t win over travelers planning interstate drives because the base Active model lacks cruise control and media controls on the steering wheel in any trim level. A good feature not seen in many more costly cars is that the wheel can be adjusted for reach and tilt, and the driver’s seat has adequate height adjustment. Roadholding is below average but still sufficient for safety.

The engine is a 1.4L petrol that produces 73.5kW at a very frenzied 5500rpm. When manufacturers measure power down to half a kilowatt, you know they’re in a desperate situation. Our car had a six-speed manual transmission, and while I didn’t drive an automatic, I imagine it’s best avoided because it only has four gears, which means the engine has to work harder in each gear. Although Mrs. P, who always has one foot firmly planted on the floor, thought the i20 was “gutless,” the engine with two fewer gear ratio options is unlikely to win her over. I found the i20 to be powerful enough.

However, because it is a budget vehicle, you can go around town rather quickly without needing to explore the higher rpm ranges if you drive somewhat intelligently. Our fuel usage of 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers was significantly higher than the combined cycle figure of 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers, but we frequently had three or four passengers and travel luggage in the car, there wasn’t much freeway cruising, and the air conditioning was kept running hard to combat the Brisbane humidity. Oh, and I wasn’t always driving, either.

Are there cruise controls in all cars?

If you’re wondering if all automobiles have cruise control, here’s the quick response: Although some automakers only provide it as an option, cruise control is a standard function on the majority of modern cars. However, not all older vehicles have the feature, save for premium trim levels that cost more and contain all the choices.

Can the i20 Sportz have cruise control installed?

Yes, aftermarket providers will install cruise control for you. On Google, you can look for nearby aftermarket vehicle cruise system suppliers. You will obtain characteristics in accordance with brands and pricing range. Additionally, installing aftermarket cruise control can void the warranty on your automobile.

You were so kind to say that! Your response to the query will help hundreds of people decide whether to buy! After moderation, it will show up on the website.

How can I tell if the cruise control on my car is on?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

  • Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is ideal. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Can aftermarket cruise control be added?

Can a vehicle without cruise control be equipped with it? I’m going on a road trip this summer and would want to have cruise control, but my car doesn’t have it.

In less than two minutes, find out if your auto insurance is being overcharged.

Yes, a car can have cruise control installed. Although not identical to a factory-installed cruise control system, aftermarket cruise control kits do exist.

You have the option of doing an aftermarket kit installation yourself or hiring a pro. It is always preferable to speak to a professional if you have no prior experience working on automobiles because installation can be a little challenging.

Aftermarket Cruise Control

  • Add to quote

Hi, picking up my new i20 Comfort Automatic on Friday coming, and would really have liked an option for Cruise Control. Has anyone fitted cruise as an aftermarket retrofit? I know there are several UK companies offering the service but would like to hear of any real experience before taking the plunge!

Got my car today, a day earlier than expected. Notice that the Owner's Manual mentions cruise control in section 5:25, but my dealer does not think it is possible to fit due to audio controls on steering wheel. I have sent a request to Hyundai UK.

Got a reply from Hyundai UK stating that cruise control is not an option for the i20, but no explanation as to why there is a section in the Owner's Manual (5:25) regarding cruise control, and even showing a photograph of the controls on the steering wheel. Does anybody know if cruise control is an option in any other country apart from the UK?

Yes, fitting cruise to an i30 is not a problem in UK because there are no controls on the right hand side of the steering wheel. Does the i20 in Sweden have bluetooth as well as audio controls on the steering wheel or is something omitted to make way for cruise controls?

Aftermarket option may not be possible if Hyundai do the same as other manufacturers (eg Fiat) and fit different wiring looms to each trim level and also vary the loom from country to country. It appears to be a cost thing. Upshot of this is the body computer may not recognise aftermarket or retrofit electricals, so make sure you double check this before taking the plunge. (My dealer told me that the foglights as fitted to the Style are not available on the Comfort because of this).

New 2023 Hyundai i20 facelift: UK prices and specs revealed

The refreshed hyundai i20 supermini is set to start at £20,770 in the uk.

cruise control hyundai i20

UK prices and specifications of the updated Hyundai i20 supermini have now officially landed, with the simplified model range now featuring one petrol engine option in three grades. Each is more generously equipped than previous versions, with prices starting at £20,770.

The entry-level Advance model is kitted out with lots of key features, including 16-inch alloy wheels, LED head and tail lights, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired to a 10.25-inch driver’s display, air conditioning, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and a rear camera. This is in addition to a whole suite of active and passive safety features, which includes everything from lane-keep assist, forward collision warning and more.

Mid-tier Premium models cost an additional £1,800 at £22,570 and add 17-inch wheels, a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, auto wipers, an auto dimming rearview mirror, plus ambient interior lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, and even a heated centre armrest. Top-spec Ultimate models go the whole hog and throw in keyless entry and start, wireless charging for your smartphone and a Bose sound system. It’s yours from £24,070.

Best superminis 2023

All three models come as standard with a 99bhp turbocharged three-cylinder engine matched to a six-speed manual. Buyers can opt for a seven-speed dual-clutch for an additional £1,250, but this, as well as new exterior colour and an additional active safety pack inclusive of blind spot monitoring, are the only options available.

More fundamental changes to the model range include a new radiator grille and the badge has been relocated to the top of the bumper. The bumper itself has been completely restyled with side air intakes and a lower lip. The LED headlights from the N Line model are now standard across the range.

Both 16- and 17-inch wheels are new designs, and the rear bumper has also been updated with a more prominent imitation diffuser. Hyundai has added three new exterior colours - Meta Blue Pearl, Lumen Grey Pearl and the Lucid Lime Metallic that our pictures show. That lime colour can be carried over to the interior as well. The seats can be specified with lime stitching as can various pieces of trim in the cabin.

There’s no word yet on whether the popular i20 N hot hatch will feature any elements from this facelifted model, but we suspect the whole N range to undergo a set of updates next year, including the larger i30 N .

Precision Cruise Control | Hyundai i20

The PRECISION CRUISE is an Original Equipment quality, retrofit Cruise Control System. This particular system is compatible with the following vehicles: Hyundai i20 2008 - 2011 Hyundai i20 2012 - 2014 Hyundai i20 2015 - Hyundai i20 Active Cross 2016 - PRECISION CRUISE is a retrofit electronic cruise control system that provides all the functionality and convenience of Original Equipment systems, along with many enhanced features. This unit comes pre-programed for your specific vehicle and the full vehicle compatibility list can be found under the compatibility List Below.

(Supplied & Fitted, inc VAT)

Our PRECISION CRUISE Control Systems take all the stress and frustration out of long-distance traveling. Simply activate the Cruise Control and remove your foot from the accelerator pedal for a much smoother and more comfortable driving experience. Should you wish to increase or decrease your speed to suit driving conditions or traffic flow speeds, the cruise control provides the option to increase or decrease your speed by pressing the respective button on the cruise control arm.

Dual Memory Settings

The PRECISION CRUISE Control System features the ability to preset two Cruise speeds in the Cruise memory. This enables you to drive at your most commonly used cruise speeds at the touch of a button, without having to drive to the desired speed first.

Original Equipment Quality Equipment

All of our Cruise Control Equipment is OE Quality and comes complete with a 'Plug n Play' Pedal Harness to reduce Installation time and cost. Our Universal Cruise Arm (pictured) is an OE Quality Cruise Arm with all the required functionality and performance of original equipment systems. However, there is also the option on certain vehicles to incorporate the Original Equipment Cruise Control Switch for an even more professional installation.

Independent Speed Limiting

The Cruise Control also features the option of setting an Independent Speed Limit. This is controlled via the Universal Cruise Arm and can be activated to prevent the driver from speeding in areas where speed limit restrictions are enforced. The Cruise control can still be used independently below this limit. Please note that this facility is not available on vehicles where the Original Equipment Cruise Switch has been installed.

Reduces the Risk of Speeding Fines

Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of speed cameras and police surveillance equipment on the roads. Using the PRECISION CRUISE enables the driver to maintain a safe (and legal) speed limit without the worry of being penalized.

Driving Optimization and Fuel Saving

When the Cruise Control is activated, the vehicle speed is regulated more than 50 times per second, optimizing driving performance. This, in turn, can also reduce fuel and transportation costs without compromising vehicle performance.

Installation Service

We also provide a full installation service of all our PRECISION CRUISE SYSTEMS. Please contact us directly to arrange a quotation and book an appointment.

PLEASE SELECT YOUR VEHICLE IN THE BOX ABOVE SO THAT WE CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH THE CORRECT SYSTEM. PLEASE CONTACT US DIRECTLY IF YOU DO NOT SEE YOUR VEHICLE ON OUR COMPATIBILITY LIST AS WE MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION FOR YOU.

Due to the unique nature of this product, certain vehicles may incur a lead time for despatch and next day delivery may not always be available

Installation & Specifications

The PRECISION CRUISE comes complete with a Universal Cruise Arm that can be installed on the steering column. Most kits also come with a ready made 'Plug n Play' pedal harness for easy installation. Full, vehicle specific, Installation Instructions will be provided with each Cruise Control System purchased.

10 most popular cars in Russia (PHOTOS)

cruise control hyundai i20

In Russia, every third resident has their own vehicle. At the beginning of 2021, 45 million passenger cars were registered in the country. Almost a third of these are made by the Russian car company LADA. Toyota is currently the second most popular brand, with over four million cars in the country— the RAV4 and Camry are the most popular models. Next come Hyundai and Kia with over two million cars each in the country.

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf).

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations.

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers.

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

1. lada granta.

cruise control hyundai i20

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000).

2. Lada Vesta

cruise control hyundai i20

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car.

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

cruise control hyundai i20

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals.

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

cruise control hyundai i20

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model.

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

cruise control hyundai i20

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

cruise control hyundai i20

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner.

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800).

7. Lada Niva

cruise control hyundai i20

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas.

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

cruise control hyundai i20

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.”

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

cruise control hyundai i20

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

cruise control hyundai i20

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).

Every system on the IONIQ 5 robotaxi also has a backup - a second system that kicks in if the first one fails. This goes for brakes, steering, communication, and power. Everything is designed to bring the passengers to their destination as safely as possible. Lastly, ‘Remote Vehicle Assistance (RVA)’ is ready to prepare the vehicle for all kinds of unpredictable scenarios such as construction zones, road flooding, or unexpected and illegal behaviors from other road users. When this happens, a Motional remote operator can connect to the vehicle’s autonomous system instantaneously and either provide the car with a new path to follow or offer other kinds of assistance.

Our partnership with Hyundai on the development process enabled us to create IONIQ 5 based robotaxi that’s uniquely capable, safe, reliable - and globally scalable. KARL IAGNEMMA - PRESIDENT AND CEO, MOTIONAL

Our first truly driverless experience.

This is our first robotaxi designed to transport public passengers without a driver present - it’s a truly driverless experience. For many consumers, this will be the first time they experience driverless technology. Motional doesn’t want passengers to feel as though they’re riding somewhere with a robot. The drive should be smooth, comfortable, and as predictable as it would be with a human driver. Passengers should feel like they’re being driven by someone who is as good a driver as they are. With the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, Motional and Hyundai want to realize freedom of mobility for more people. We want to achieve the same thing with every one of our mobility products - less crowded cities and less climate change, all while opening up a world of greater freedom of mobility for everyone - regardless of age or income.

IONIQ 5

We’re building our robotaxis to serve a range of different users worldwide, such as, busy families who need extra transportation; professionals who can benefit from repurposing their commute time to be more productive; and the elderly and disabled who lack accessible transportation options. Soon, robotaxis will be taking our children to the doctor, bringing us home from work and running our errands. Robotaxis will improve our lifestyles no end and will create a whole new mobility platform from the ground up. Introducing our robotaxi into Hyundai’s future mobility platform, will realize greener and smarter lifestyles for everyone. When it comes to the urban environment, the robotaxis will conserve energy and reduce traffic congestion in our cities. The more robotaxis are on the road, the more they can absorb the mobility demand in the city, resulting in less greenhouse gas emissions being released. Over time, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi will also contribute to Hyundai’s carbon-neutral goal as it spreads to cities and platforms worldwide, starting 2023.

Stay tuned to see how the IONIQ 5 robotaxi will elevate our lives and contribute to Hyundai’s carbon neutrality goal together with our other platform solutions like our urban air mobility and purpose-built vehicles. Follow Hyundai’s Instagram( @hyundai ) to find out more about our cars and mobility products for the next generation.
