Key Considerations When Cruising in December

  • Climate Factors Based on Destination: The climate is your compass! December weather varies dramatically across cruise destinations. Opt for the Caribbean, Bahamas, or Southeast Asia for some warm winter sunshine, while regions like Europe offer a genuine winter wonderland, perfect for those craving a white Christmas!
  • Types of Cruises: Whether you’re the whole family decked in reindeer antlers, lovebirds escaping under the mistletoe, or solo adventurers with an appetite for exploration, there’s a ship waiting for you! Most cruise ships during the holiday season are in full holiday spirit, catering to all—think Disney characters for the kids and liquor tastings for adults.
  • Duration of Cruise Options: Quick dash or epic voyage? December cruises range from short 3-day jaunts to extensive journeys lasting weeks. Consider your holiday schedule, and don’t forget to factor in round-trip travel to your port of departure, be it Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale.
  • Budget Considerations: Santa’s not footing the bill, so plan according to your budget! Prices surge during the holidays, but early birds catch the wallet-friendly deals. Factor in onboard expenses, port expenses , and potential surcharges on these floating resorts.
  • Health and Safety Protocols Onboard: Rudolph’s red nose isn’t the only thing glowing this season—health and safety are in the spotlight, too. Major cruise lines have upped their game: enhanced cleaning, improved air filtration, and updated health protocols.

Sailing into the sunset of the year, December cruises unlock a world of diverse adventures, from the sun-kissed beaches of the Bahamas to the pristine ice expanses of Antarctica. Whether you’re unwinding on a serene Asian beach, delving into rich cultural tapestries, or playing with penguins in the polar south, there’s a unique story waiting for you on the high seas.

Remember, the perfect holiday voyage isn’t one-size-fits-all. Reflect on what lights up your holiday spirit, be it tranquility, adventure, or cultural exploration, and choose a journey that resonates with your soul. Here’s to unforgettable end-of-year escapades! 🚢✨

Things to Watch Out For on December Cruises

Things to Watch Out For on December Cruises

As enchanting as cruises in December can be, there are certain considerations and potential pitfalls that travelers should be aware of. By keeping these in mind, you can ensure your voyage is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Weather Considerations

Even though December is ideal for many destinations, weather can sometimes be unpredictable.

  • Caribbean and Tropical Areas: While these regions experience dry weather, there’s still a chance of sporadic rainfall or even a rare late-season hurricane.
  • Antarctica and Cold Destinations: Icy conditions can sometimes lead to changes in itinerary if certain passages become inaccessible.

Tip: Always pack some versatile clothing options and check the weather forecast as your cruise date approaches.

Peak Season Crowds

December is a popular time for vacationers, especially around Christmas and New Year.

  • Popular Ports: Some popular destinations might be crowded, leading to longer wait times for attractions or sold-out excursions.
  • Onboard: Ships often sail at full capacity during this period, meaning more competition for amenities like spa bookings or specialty dining.

Tip: Book excursions and onboard activities in advance and consider exploring less-touristy areas during port calls.

Things to Watch Out For on December Cruises

Price Surges

With demand being high, prices for cruises in December, especially around the holidays, can be steeper.

  • Last-minute Bookings: While you might occasionally find a deal, waiting too long often means higher prices or limited availability.
  • Onboard Costs: Some cruise lines might charge premium rates for certain onboard services during the festive season.

Tip: Book well in advance, keep an eye out for deals, and set a budget for onboard expenses.

Adjusted Itineraries and Timings

With the holiday season in full swing, there might be some adjustments to the usual cruise schedules.

  • Shortened or Extended Port Calls: Due to local holidays or festivities, the time spent in certain ports might be altered.
  • Shop Timings: In some destinations, local shops or attractions might have different operating hours due to holiday observances.

Tip: Always double-check the daily cruise itinerary and plan your activities accordingly.

Things to Watch Out For on December Cruises

Health and Safety

While cruise lines take utmost care to ensure passenger safety, it’s always good to be proactive.

  • Overindulgence: With festive feasts and drinks, it’s easy to overindulge. Moderation is key to avoid any health issues.
  • Sanitation: Cruises in December see more families with kids, increasing the chances of common illnesses. Regular hand washing and using onboard sanitization stations can help.

Tip: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers potential medical issues, especially if you’re traveling to remote destinations.

While cruises in December offer a world of festivities and unique experiences, being aware of potential challenges and planning accordingly ensures a hassle-free journey.

The magic of the holiday season combined with the allure of the open sea creates an unforgettable tapestry of memories—just remember to be prepared, stay informed, and relish every moment of your December voyage!

Staying Safe and Healthy on December Cruises

Staying Safe and Healthy on December Cruises

Ensuring a safe and healthy cruise experience is crucial, especially during the bustling holiday season of December.

With ships potentially at full capacity and the festive celebrations in full swing, a few precautionary measures can make a world of difference. Here’s a guide to help you stay safe and in top health during your December voyage:

Cruise Ship Health and Safety Protocols

Cruise lines have stringent measures in place to ensure the wellbeing of their passengers.

  • Sanitization: High-touch areas like railings, elevators, and door handles are regularly cleaned. Make use of the hand sanitizing stations spread throughout the ship.
  • Medical Center: Every cruise ship has a medical center with qualified professionals. Familiarize yourself with its location and services.
  • Safety Drills: Attend the mandatory muster drill at the beginning of the cruise. This provides crucial information about safety procedures and lifeboat locations.

Staying Safe and Healthy on December Cruises

Tips for Staying Well Onboard

  • Hydration: With the excitement of the cruise and various activities, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Stay hydrated, especially if you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages.
  • Balanced Diet: While it’s tempting to overindulge in the festive treats, try to maintain a balanced diet. Include fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients to keep your energy levels up.
  • Physical Activity: Utilize the ship’s fitness center, join dance classes, or simply take stairs instead of elevators to stay active.
  • Rest: Ensure you get adequate sleep. It not only rejuvenates you for the next day’s adventures but also bolsters your immune system.

General Safety Measures

  • Stay Informed: Regularly check the daily cruise newsletter or app updates for any important announcements or safety information.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Enjoy the festivities, but drink responsibly. Avoid overindulgence, especially if you plan to participate in water activities or excursions.
  • Balcony Safety: If you have a balcony stateroom, ensure the door is locked, especially at night or when you’re not in the room. Never climb or sit on balcony railings.

Staying Safe and Healthy on December Cruises

In Port Safety

  • Stay Aware: When exploring ports of call, be aware of your surroundings. Avoid poorly lit areas and always keep personal belongings secure.
  • Local Customs: Respect local customs and dress codes, especially in religious or culturally significant places.
  • Stay Connected: Always carry a copy of the cruise ship’s contact information and the time you need to be back onboard.

Emergency Contacts and Procedures

  • Emergency Number: Store the ship’s emergency number in your phone. This can be crucial if you face any issues while on an excursion.
  • Reporting Issues: If you feel unwell or notice someone exhibiting signs of illness, report it to the ship’s medical center immediately.
  • Evacuation Procedures: Familiarize yourself with the ship’s evacuation procedures and the location of life vests in your stateroom.

Yes, many cruisers book consecutive cruises, especially if they want to celebrate both Christmas and New Year onboard. Coordinate with the cruise line for a seamless transition between voyages.

20. Do I need to tip more during the holiday season?

While not mandatory, considering the crew is working hard during the festive season, a little extra gratuity can be a kind gesture of appreciation.

Latest Cruise News

Carnival vista rescues six after cargo ship capsizes.

While sailing near the Dominican Republic, the Carnival Vista spotted six survivors from a capsized cargo ship and brought them aboard.

The Coast Guard searched and eventually located four other missing crew members. Carnival Vista continued its planned journey after informing authorities. This was the second such rescue for Carnival’s ships this year, following a similar incident in the North Sea earlier in October.

Nieuw Amsterdam’s Caribbean Cruise Delayed by Bad Weather

Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam Caribbean cruise scheduled for this Saturday has been delayed due to bad weather .

Passengers will now set sail on Monday, December 18, with a shorter itinerary visiting Half Moon Cay and Key West instead of the planned Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk.

As an apology, the cruise line is offering a 100% future cruise credit, 25% credit on the original fare, $150 onboard credit, and refunds for any impacted tours. Holland America offers $300 per day in onboard credit and hotel recommendations for those needing extra hotel nights.

Royal Caribbean Eyes Comeback in Bahamas

Royal Caribbean is in talks to buy the closed Xanadu Beach Hotel and nearby land for a resort and water park. Plans could also involve the Celebrity Cruises brand, too.

Royal Caribbean has recently announced they are investing to revitalize Freeport Harbour. They’re aiming bigger than their past Grand Lucayan deal that was botched in 2021, and this new project, with its marina and prime location, could be a big step for the cruise giant in the Bahamas.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean just invested millions into improving Grand Bahama shipyard facilty in Freeport, Bahamas.

Princess Cruises Starts Construction for Star Princess

Princess Cruises celebrated the start of construction for their newest ship, Star Princess, with a keel-laying ceremony in Italy. This massive vessel, scheduled for a 2025 debut, will be their biggest yet, boasting an entertainment dome, state-of-the-art theater, and stunning ocean views.

Star Princess will sail from Fort Lauderdale to destinations like the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Hawaii during its inaugural season.

Sun Princess Unveils New Love-Themed Restaurant

Princess Cruises is setting sail for a sensory feast on the Sun Princess with “Love by Britto,” a new restaurant in 2024. Artist Romero Britto’s vibrant Happy Art infuses the space, while Chef Rudi Sodamin’s seven-course tasting menu indulges with Oysters and Wagyu for $149.

Channeling the “Love Boat” legacy, the Sun Princess offers modern thrills like a roll glider and Cirque Éloize shows, making it a cruise for the heart, the senses, and the adventurous spirit.

Celebrity Cruises Tightens Shore Tour Cancellation Policy

Celebrity Cruises is tightening its shore tour cancellation policy . Starting January 1, you can only get a refund for most excursions if you cancel 48 hours before the ship arrives in port, not before the tour starts.

This allows others to snag spots in filled tours and reduces last-minute changes. More complex tours with flights or overnight stays still require a 30-day cancellation notice.

Celebrity Reflection ABC Cruise - December 9 - 17

By stbr , December 20, 2023 in Celebrity Cruises

Cool Cruiser

December 9 – 17 on Celebrity Reflection (ABC Islands): What a difference a few months makes 😊

We are newly home from a very nice 8-day cruise on the Celebrity Reflection.

Getting there and Fort Lauderdale :   We flew from Toronto to Fort Lauderdale (Air Canada/on time) a couple of days before the cruise and stayed at Snooze Motel.   I would definitely stay there again. They are exactly what they say they are!   They are a nice motel with great prices across the road from the beach.   There’s no big lobby, 24-hour front desk, swimming pool, etc.   But we got a clean room with a fridge, microwave, sink, dishes, coffee maker, free wifi, etc for a reasonable price.   They also provide beach towels, beach chairs, pool toys, sunscreen, etc.   And the young man in the office was a big help.   This place is all about its location and price.

On the first night, we didn’t arrive at the hotel until 8pm.   They left us with clear instructions to use the elevator and access our room. We headed next door to Casablanca restaurant and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The food was great but the singer was too loud. We couldn’t hear ourselves talking. The volume of the singer forced everyone at the tables to shout to have a conversation. Way too much noise.

The next day, we took a great walk along the beach, headed to the nearby Publix for a few essentials, and then had an early dinner at Primanti Brothers Pizza. We really enjoyed our pizza.

Embarkation :   Our only hiccup on embarkation day was getting a taxi from the hotel to Port Everglades.   We had to wait for close to 45 minutes. I guess everyone wanted a taxi!   There were a lot of ships in port that day, so I’m guessing a lot of taxi cabs were doing the ship to airport runs.

Boarding was seamless and we dropped off our stuff in our room within 15 minutes of arriving at the port.   We went to Opus for our Concierge lunch (butternut squash soup, salmon, and chocolate cake).   It’s the first time we’ve been concierge class and this was a nice benefit.   We avoided the crowds in the Oceanview Café.

The Itinerary :   Two seas days, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, and two more sea days.     The seas were definitely active on the sea days!   It was hard to walk a straight line and I couldn’t have managed without Bonine and Dramamine. In fact, the ship sold out of Bonine! So, a lot of people must have felt the ocean’s motion!   I was very glad to be midship.

On sea days, we just like to hang out, read books, listen to music, etc.   We did attend the Captain Kirk’s talk on ship navigation.   It was interesting. I’d like more of these talks on sea days.

Aruba:   After a nice walk through the town and lunch at 5 O’Clock Somewhere, we took a taxi to Eagle Beach for a few hours.   $15 each way.   We didn’t buy internet on the ship, so we had a leisurely coffee at Starbucks and caught up on emails, etc.

Curacao:   We enjoyed the town and took a long walk.   We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at La Boheme.   We also started the day with a leisurely coffee at Starbucks again.

Bonaire:   I did an amazing snorkeling excursion with Woodwind.   I wouldn’t book anything else if I was in Bonaire. It was my second trip with them.   They’re super friendly and knowledgeable.   They provide everything you need for snorkeling (including prescription masks), give you drinks, a snack after the first snorkel experience, and a full lunch with dessert after the second snorkel experience.   Tasty food, too!   You can’t beat it!   You get all of this for $85 US.   FYI:   They have free wifi at the office.

Staff :   As always, they’re excellent. Our stateroom attendant, Flemmy, took good care of us. Our dining room waiters and assistant waiters (shout out to Jude, Don, Larry, and Jonathan) were amazing.   I wish more people took the time to be kind to the staff on board.   They work very hard and deserve to be treated respectfully.

Food :   I referenced this in my title.   What a difference four months makes.   I got some good health news at the very end of June and booked an August celebration cruise the next day. We took a wonderful 9-day Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity Reflection. Don’t get me wrong – we had a wonderful time.   But the only weak spot was the food – main dining room and Oceanview Café. It was a port-intensive cruise, so we made sure to enjoy the wonderful Italian, Spanish, and French foods in the ports to make up for the less-than stellar choices in the dining room. In fact, after day four, we didn’t return to the dining room and instead ate at Oceanview for the remainder of the cruise.

Well last week, I enjoyed every meal.   On port days, we had a quick breakfast at the Oceanview Café – fruit, eggs, yogurt, raw fish, etc.   But on sea days, we had a more leisurely breakfast in the dining room. It was always very good.   There were lots of choices at Oceanview for lunch – fish, cheese, meat, salads, pizza, etc.   No complaints there.   On the last sea day, there was a fabulous spread at lunchtime with shrimp, chicken wings, etc.   I had fish most nights in the main dining room and enjoyed every one of them. The salads were tasty. The desserts were yummy.   I also had prime rib (first night) and roast turkey (very tasty).   My husband had beef wellington and enjoyed it.   So, some of our favourites are definitely making their way back to the main dining room menus. This is good to see.

Drink :   We didn’t take the drinks package. I can’t drink much because of a cancer drug, so it’s just not worth it for us.   And because the drinks packages are so expensive, I think there are a lot of people who want to get their money’s worth – LOL.   I don’t blame them. But for those who only want to have a couple of drinks a day, I have to say that the price per drink is totally outrageous for what you’re getting.   I don’t like being gouged.

Entertainment :   Well, thanks to the Bonine and Dramamine, I didn’t make it to all of the evening shows – slept well, though 😊 But there were definitely a few standouts.   First, we loved listening to Mike Redden (singer/guitar player).   He understands his audience and has a great voice.   Plain and simple.   He’s not shrieking into the microphone.   You feel like you’re part of a musical experience when you listen to him sing.   In fact, I noticed that people stopped having conversations and instead actively listened to him instead.   He had some shows at the pool, a couple at the sunset bar, and a couple of places that we missed because it was at dinner time. But we thought he was great and hope to see him on future cruises.

I really enjoyed the classical piano player. I’d love more of this. I wish I could remember his name.

Captain Kirk (see Redneck Bob’s comments) rocked the ship.   It was a great show.   I’m hoping that he adds some Metallica if we’re lucky enough to have him as our captain on future cruises.

The comedian and magician were fun, too.   Again, I forget their names.

We had already seen Elysium on our summer cruise. It’s good. But I’m not sure I get the theme. They are talented acrobats though.

The cruise director and activities staff were very involved and visible. They’re always so positive.

Disembarkation :   We had an 11:20am flight and travel only with carry-on luggage, so we chose to do the self-disembark. Even though the disembarkation schedule said 7:30am, we were off the ship earlier than that and at FLL before 8am.   As another poster mentioned, FLL’s terminal two was great. We had a coffee, browsed a bit (there’s a great book selection), and waited for our flight (which was on time).

All in, we had a great vacation. In one of the ports, I saw a bus that had a huge message painted along its side.   It said, “Too blessed to be stressed”.   That’s a fine sentiment.

great review...love your closing line!

lola2013

I have booked and canceled (due to the pandemic) Snooze Inn a couple of times, but I have two nights booked there pre-cruise in April.  I’m happy to read your glowing report about the place.  And no trip to Ft. Lauderdale is complete without a trip to Primanti Brothers.  I actually had two lunches and one breakfast there a couple of weeks ago!

Thanks for the great Reflection review.

SkystheLimit

Thank you for the review.  We are booked on the same itinerary with FCC in March and have been a bit apprehensive with some of the changes.  Our friends were on your cruise and said it was a great trip.  So, we are now getting excited like in olden days.

Thanks for writing the review about your vacation. We are on the same itinerary and ship in 17 days. Hopefully our trip is as nice as yours.

Sophie's Mom1

Really enjoyed reading your review. We are doing an 8 day cruise on Reflection in March so your comments were of much interest.  When we disembark, instead of rushing to the airport to fly home, we are spending 2 relaxing days at Snooze Hotel. We're looking forward to it and will definitely try Primanti Brothers.

You're welcome, Susan. We'll definitely return to Snooze and Primanti Brothers  😁

Before re-entering service, the ship will go through a two week drydock which will include the addition of cruiser favorites. The new venues include a Guy’s Burger Joint, RedFrog Rum Bar, and the Alchemy Bar, among others. Once these additions are made to the ship, it will return to providing regular cruises from San Juan Puerto, Rico. The ship offers seven night sailings visiting Eastern and Southern Caribbean ports.
