Cruise Ship Tracker

AIS ship tracking is a great way to stay up-to-date on the location of marine vessels. Using the AIS system, you can track the progress of a ship as it travels from port to port. This information can be beneficial for planning your  travel  itinerary and following your ship during your cruise vacation. Every cruise line follows its vessels to keep tabs on their time of arrival and current position as well as other items that might cause delays, such as weather or other marine traffic.

Want to stay up-to-date on cruise ship locations?

The AIS system is a network of transponders that sends information like ship name, location, course, and speed. This data can be used to track the progress of a cruise ship as it travels from port to port.

What Cruise Lines and Cruise Ships are tracked?

All of the world’s cruise lines use the AIS system to track each cruise ship in their fleet using updated data. It helps large vessels like cruise ships, and others know each other’s current location, speed, heading, routes, etc. You can look up a specific cruise ship or focus on a particular fleet from your favorite cruise line. Of course, this system also can show many other vessels such as cargo ships, pilots, yachts, passenger ferries, and many more.

Automatic Identification System (AIS)

The Automatic Identification System, or AIS, is a system used by ships and other vessels to identify each other and transmit their locations. This information can be used to track the progress of a cruise ship as it travels from port to port. The data transmitted by AIS includes the vessel’s name, course, speed, destination, ship type, and any safety-related messages. It also provides an indication of the vessel’s size, type, cargo, and maneuverability. The system also uses a network of base stations located on shore.

Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)

The vessel traffic services (VTS) system is used mainly for monitoring and controlling maritime traffic in an area of specific importance. With its modern  technology , it enables the authorities to observe, analyze, and coordinate the movement of vessels within a designated area. The system consists of various communication channels such as radar, AIS, VHF radio, and satellite.

The fleet operation centers focus on more than just the ship’s location but also Nautical Operations & Safety, Procedural Optimization & Efficiency, and Sustainability.

What is Cruise Ship Tracking?

Cruise ship tracking is a technology that allows cruise lines to monitor their vessels in real time. AIS (Automatic Identification System) has become the standard for ship tracking, as it broadcasts the position of a vessel every few minutes. This data can be received by any receiver with an AIS system and can be used to track the progress of not only cruise ships but, other passenger vessels, cruise ferries, and even container ships. Modern vessel tracking allows authorities to see the positions of vessels in real-time. This might help you get a package on  time or in the case of cruises , plan for any delays arriving in a port.  Shore excursions  can be re-scheduled if needed well before the day arrived if a delay due to weather or another incident occurred.

What benefits of Cruise Ship Tracker?

By using the AIS ship tracking system, you can gain valuable insights about cruise ships and other vessels. The real-time data received from the AIS system allows you to stay up to date on the current location of a cruise ship, its speed, and its heading. This is great for  planning your own cruise itinerary  or just staying informed on the progress

Types of Ships Listed

The cruise ship tracking system provides real-time data for all types of vessels, not just cruise ships. This data includes a wide  variety  of vessels such as cargo ships, pilots, yachts, passenger ferries and many more. This means that you can track any vessel that is using the AIS system and receive detailed information about its current location and route.

Passenger Ships

Safety and Security with Cruise Ship Tracker

The AIS ship tracking system provides an extra layer of security and safety for fleets. Not only can the system provide real-time data on the location of a vessel, but it also allows for quick response times to any potential emergencies that may arise. Cruise lines are able to use this data to better manage their fleets and respond quickly if necessary.

Environmental Benefits

The AIS ship tracking system can also provide environmental benefits. By monitoring the progress of vessels, cruise lines, and other fleets can better optimize their routes for fuel efficiency. This means that by using the AIS system, ships can reduce their fuel consumption and emissions, resulting in a greener fleet.

Viking Star

Can you track every cruise ship?

No, not every cruise ship can be tracked. Some cruise ships may not have an AIS system installed, and therefore cannot be tracked. Additionally, some countries may restrict the broadcast of AIS data for security or other reasons. For these reasons, it is essential to double-check the availability of AIS data before attempting to track a specific cruise ship.

United States Coast Guard Regulations

The United States Coast Guard requires all ships operating in US waters to have an AIS system installed. This means that all cruise ships visiting the United States must have an AIS system installed and active at all times. This requirement ensures that all vessels are visible and traceable while in US waters, allowing for improved safety and security.

Emergency Situations

In the event of an emergency, AIS ship tracking can be used to quickly locate and contact a vessel in distress. By using the system, search and rescue teams can quickly and accurately locate vessels in need of assistance. This can mean the difference between life and death in some cases.

Carnival Spirit’s success in Port City driving interest from cruise industry

MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Just like that -- the Carnival Spirit will soon be departing the Port City after its inaugural season. It’s been six months since Carnival returned to Mobile. You’ll remember FOX 10 Live was there for the big day.

“If you can’t get excited about this -- I don’t know what it’s going to take to get you excited,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said to the media.

The Spirit is by far the biggest & best ship we’ve ever had -- offering longer itineraries and exotic ports of call. And even though we only have it half the year -- Visit Mobile President & CEO David Clark says it’s already living up to expectations.

“Carnival was very successful these past few months and I think our stakeholders are feeling the difference of having a ship -- versus not having a ship last fall,” said Clark. “When the passengers come back -- they’re not just immediately leaving the city... And most of them are certainly staying a day or two before.”

That’s certainly the case for Kandy & Robby Ward. We ran into them enjoying the best of the Port City on Good Friday before they were set to board Saturday morning.

“Kandy: We come to check out Dauphin Street for the night. Robby: We came down 6 months ago just to check it out before the cruise. Kandy: We’re planners. (Laughs).”

They along with their friend’s early arrival -- translating to higher occupancy rates in our hotels and of course spending money at downtown restaurants.

“Just relax and enjoy it and enjoy our company. Lee: Some good food -- maybe some good drinks? -- Oh yeah -- a couple of good drinks (laughs),” said Wendy & Roger Finley.

And you can’t leave the Port City without getting a souvenir. Like most downtown businesses -- Bienville Souvenir & Gifts knows the value of having a cruise ship in port.

“We stay busy when the ship is here,” said Gary Owens, Bienville Souvenir & Gifts owner.

While he sees a good bit of locals -- Owens says his business is obviously driven by tourists.

From magnets, shot glasses, and Mardi Gras masks -- there and endless supply of trinkets to choose from.

Retiring after a career with Mobile Police -- Owens opened six years ago and was here for Carnival’s Fantasy, the Ecstasy, and the return of the Spirit last fall. He shows us a cool way he keeps tracks of visitors -- many arriving to hop on a cruise.

“I was so curious -- on where people were from. Going from law enforcement to souvenir shop -- and then people coming to Mobile -- it’s like they’re coming to Mobile? -- So I got to listening to their stories. So I started a map, which the push a pin where they’re from. And this map is just all done in one year. Has filled up in one year. Each pin has a story behind it... And that’s what’s unique about it,” explained Owens.

Call it a domino effect - but good news spreads fast. Clark along with Mayor Stimpson and other stakeholders are set to travel to Miami Monday for the annual “Seatrade Cruise Global” event -- where they’ll meet with Carnival and other cruise lines about coming to Mobile. Clark says there’s already interest.

“And actually this time -- they called us first -- so that kind of never happens. I’ve been doing this show -- going down to Miami for the past seven consecutive years and that hasn’t happened yet. So that’s good news,” said Clark.

While they have plenty success stories to share -- they believe we’re in a good position to attract new business.

“It shows beyond doubt within 12 hours of here that Mobile, Alabama is the best cruise driving destination. The first port that you come to in North Central America -- it’s easy. And when you look at all of the social media and all of our guest reviews -- the cruise team here at our port -- does a really great job at taking care of the customers and so that begins to amplify the message,” said Clark.

When it comes to commitment -- Clark says Mobile is all in -- the City Council approved nearly five-million dollars to update the cruise terminal with a bigger gangway to attract larger ships. It’s set to be installed this summer while the cruise ship isn’t here.

Meanwhile, the City’s return on investment -- hopefully being seen not only on the front but back end of each cruise.

“There’s several things that we wanted to try -- tours that we wanted to see,” said Wendy.

“Lee: So you guys -- might be staying another night? -- Kandy Ward: Yeah, depends on how much he wins in the casino. (Laughs).”

Meanwhile -- itineraries for next fall will also include destinations in the Southern Caribbean -- you’ve got the Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao, Grand Cayman -- just to name a few. In addition to the 6 and 8 day cruises -- they will also have a 12-day cruise. But like we saw this last six months -- if you want to ensure you get a spot on the ship -- now is the time to book as they expect cruises to fill up fast.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. ( WMBF /Gray News) - A group of passengers who were reportedly left on an African island by their cruise liner is planning to return to the ship on Tuesday.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said the group is set to rejoin the cruise in Dakar, Senegal.

The passengers were originally supposed to reboard on Monday in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship could not dock safely due to the weather.

Norwegian Cruise Line said its protocol means guests are typically responsible for any travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next port of call, but Norwegian will reimburse the group because of the weather issues.

The guests, which include a Garden City couple Jill and Jay Campbell, haven’t been back on the ship since March 27, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the guests were on a private tour and did not make it back in time.

“We were waiting for the tender boats to come back and get us because our boat was anchored off the harbor, but they didn’t come back to get us,” Jay Campbell previously shared.

According to the cruise line, all guests were told about an all-aboard 3 p.m. call time that day, but the guests missed it by more than an hour. It added that their passports were left with the local port agents for retrieval.

Norwegian Cruise Line explained that it works closely with local tour operators to ensure excursions are planned to the cruise line’s schedule to guarantee timely arrivals back to port. However, since the group was on a private tour, it was not in communication with the tour operator.

The Campbells were eight days into the 21-day cruise, which started in South Africa.

Norwegian Cruise Line claimed that once the guests did not make it back to the ship, it worked with them and the local port agent to help with obtaining the necessary visas for them.

Over the weekend, the passengers shared that they tried reaching out to Norwegian Cruise Line but they did not hear back from the company promptly regarding reembarking the ship.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to make it through the rest of this trip and end in Spain,” Jay Campbell previously shared.

Carnival's Legend ship docks in Norfolk in wake of Baltimore's Key Bridge collapse

By Adam Thompson

Updated on: March 31, 2024 / 8:32 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE - Carnival cruise line's Legend docked in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last week.

The ship left for its voyage out of Baltimore on Sunday, March 24.

On Tuesday, a cargo ship collided with the Key Bridge, knocking it down and sending eight construction workers into the Patapsco River. Two were rescued, the bodies of two others were recovered and four more remain missing and are presumed dead.

The Port of Baltimore has been suspended for ships and vessels while crews clean up the channel.

Maryland was given $60 million of Emergency Relief funding for the cleanup efforts, which is currently underway .

The port is the  ninth-busiest  in the United States, according to Census data, and handled more than $80 billion in imports and exports last year, the most in 20 years. It is also home to Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian  cruise lines .

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News  report .

Cruise Lines International Association , the largest cruise industry trade association, says 12 cruise ships made 115 trips through Baltimore in 2024. And in 2023, about 444,000 cruise passengers moved through the port, the 29th largest in the U.S.

Ragina Ali, a representative of AAA, was on the Legend and sent WJZ photos of the end stop in Norfolk. The passengers were given bus rides back to their cars at the Port of Baltimore.

8 passengers, including Garden City couple, rejoin cruise ship after being left

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - The eight guests who were left on an African island nation by their cruise ship are back on the ship on Tuesday.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said the eight were set to rejoin the ship in Dakar, Senegal.

The group was originally supposed to reboard on Monday in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship could not dock safely due to the weather.

Norwegian Cruise Line said their protocol means guests are typically responsible for any travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next port of call, but Norwegian will reimburse the group because of the weather issues.

The guests, which include a Garden City couple, Jill and Jay Campbell, haven’t been back on the ship since March 27, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the guests were on a private tour and did not make it back in time.

“We were waiting for the tender boats to come back and get us because our boat was anchored off the harbor, but they didn’t come back to get us, so we’re stranded here,” said Jay Campbell.

The cruise line said all guests were told about 3 p.m. all aboard time, but the eight guests missed it by more than an hour. It added that their passports were left with the local port agents for retrieval.

Norwegian Cruise Line explained that it works closely with local tour operators to ensure excursions are planned to the cruise line’s schedule to guarantee timely arrivals back to port. The cruise line said since the group was on a private tour, it was not in communication with the tour operator.

The Campbells were eight days into the 21-day cruise, which started in South Africa, when they were left.

Norwegian Cruise Line claimed that once the guests did not make it back to the ship at the all aboard time, it worked with them and the local port agent to help with obtaining the necessary visas for them.

”Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call,” the cruise line said.

The cruise line also said another guest was “medically disembarked” on March 27 while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe.

After leaving a hospital on the island, that guest was escorted on a flight to Portugal, “and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States,” Norwegian Cruise Line said.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship catches fire amid bad weather conditions

Carnival Freedom Fire

The Carnival Freedom caught fire while sailing in the Bahamas on Saturday, March 23. The ship was heading to Freeport after canceling a call to Princess Cay due to bad weather conditions.

According to a release from Carnival Cruise Line, the fire broke out on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel causing a portion of it to fall onto the deck.

Soon after the fire broke out, the captain turned the ship around toward an area with heavy rain to maximize efforts of extinguishing the flames.

The captain made several announcements to guests and crew and advised everyone to stay away from the balconies and all open decks.

No injuries to guests were reported, but two members of the firefighting crew were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

There were no operational issues with the ship's systems due to the fire, and all areas of the ship are fully functioning again, with the exception of the open decks.

No delays are expected to future voyages, and the ship plans to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday.
