Springtime is here, which means gardens in Northern Virginia are blooming with fresh flowers, plants and greenery. Explore these Virginia sites oozing with natural beauty and don’t miss special events during Historic Garden Week in Virginia.

Flowering trees, garden and walkway of the Carlyle House Historic Park Garden

Bask in springtime gardens around the city. This year’s Old Town Alexandria Historic Homes & Garden Tour will be in a self-guided format, taking you along Old Town’s tree-lined streets on April 17, 2021, as part of Historic Garden Week in Virginia . You can also stroll the gardens at the historic Carlyle House. Fancy tea time? On April 22, tune into Carlyle House ’s “Historic Gardens at Historic Sites” virtual lecture from Dean Norton, director of Horticulture at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, complete with a tea box to enjoy at home filled with treats from The Spice & Tea Exchange and Firehook Bakery . Meanwhile, The Rectory on Princess Street’s “secret garden” is the perfect setting for a springtime portrait session when the tulip magnolia trees bloom in mid-March.

Arlington County

Bon Air Rose Garden - This hidden gem is an English-style rose garden with a spectacular range of 130 varieties of roses. Leisurely spend an afternoon wandering Bon Air Rose Garden ’s carefully groomed walking paths, featuring secluded benches and lovely trellises. Peak bloom for the roses occurs from the end of May through June. Intermixed throughout the grounds are azalea and ornamental tree gardens as well as shade and sun gardens. Visitors can also explore the surrounding park, Bon Air Park, which includes playgrounds, picnic areas, a path and the Four Mile Run stream.

Netherlands Carillon - The grounds surrounding the towering Netherlands Carillon bell tower are planted with thousands of flowers. The most popular springtime attraction is the tulip bulbs. The colorful tulips range from bright reds and yellows to deep purple and pink. The peaceful grounds are the perfect place to find a quiet escape from busy city life. The grassy slopes and large trees provide many spots to settle down with a picnic lunch. Nearby, visitors can also see the Marine Corps War Memorial .

Fairfax County

spring view of Korean Bell Garden at Meadowlark Gardens

Fairfax County is home to more than 30,000 acres of green space, and among those acres are several unique garden landscapes perfect for reveling in the post-quarantine springtime blooms and temperatures.

One of the most exquisite is Meadowlark Botanical Gardens , a 95-acre oasis tucked away in Vienna and home to the only traditional, public Korean Bell Garden pavilion in the Western Hemisphere. Stroll under the 100+ cherry trees that surround Lake Caroline, visit an array of native plant collections and large ornamental display gardens, or bring the kids to play in the Children’s Garden. This year, Meadowlark Gardens is part of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week celebration, where guests can additionally visit several private gardens in McLean on April 20, 2021.

In southern Fairfax County, visit Green Spring Gardens , which just celebrated 50 beautiful years. In addition to the stream valley, 20 demonstration gardens, native plants, and greenhouse, Green Spring also operates a national historic site that offers glimpses into a long and rich history with colonial origins. Guests can also partake in an exceptional variety of workshops, tea times, and events, for both children and adults.

Last but definitely not least, enjoy a different perspective with a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon , which features four bountiful gardens to explore and appreciate, from the formal pleasure garden to the kitchen garden, plus several other small nurseries.

Loudoun County

springtime view of flowering plants and trees at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens

Visit Oatlands Historic House and Gardens outside Leesburg. The five-acre formal terraced garden at Oatlands is considered to be one of the finest gardens in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The gardens were first established in the early 1800s by George Carter and later expanded by the Eustis family to include boxwood parterres, statuary, a teahouse, a bowling green, rose garden and a reflecting pool . Many of the plantings and original elements are still around today.

Known at the “Central Park of Loudoun”, Morven Park features not only a beautiful Greek-revival mansion but hiking trails and gardens developed in the 1920s and 30s. Enjoy magnificent boxwoods, wisteria and other flowers in the terraced garden and along the reflecting pool. The grounds are free to meander or register for a guided tour.

Prince William

Ben Lomond Rose

The Teaching Garden at the Benedictine Monastery - The Teaching Garden is a project of the Master Gardener Volunteers. It began as a garden to grow fresh produce for the Plant a Row for the Hungry project and a place where Master Gardeners could teach homeowners how to grow vegetables. The Teaching Garden displays low maintenance gardening techniques that homeowners can implement in their own gardens. It also features plant material that grows well locally.

Antique Rose Garden at Ben Lomond Historic Site - The grounds of Ben Lomond Historic Site are home to a 5,200 square foot garden of old roses (one of the largest public gardens devoted to antique roses in the U.S.)Inspired by a French garden, the collection has approximately 160 separate cultivars and 200 individual rose shrubs.

We are working towards labeling all our plant collections at the Gardens. Since our collections are constantly changing with additions, divisions, and subtractions, plant labeling is always a work in progress. For assistance identifying a plant, take several pictures and email them and your inquiry to [email protected] . What’s in bloom changes frequently throughout the seasons. Check our Facebook and Instagram for more information or ask the Front Desk staff upon your arrival.

The Volgenau Conservatory holds our Mediterranean collection and will be open for limited educational opportunities. In the wintertime, tropical plants not housed in the Volgenau Conservatory are dug up and overwintered in our greenhouse facilities.

Chantilly’s National Botanic Garden Is a Love Letter to Nature and Sustainability

national botanic garden

A Loudoun County couple combines art and earthmoving with sustainability and a love of nature to craft garden grounds worth visiting.

By Will Schermerhorn September 13, 2022

The spine of a dragon made of rock carves through the earth just inside the gates of National Botanic Garden . In sweeping curves hundreds of feet long, its scaly back winds through a tended lawn of grass and shade trees.

That’s the first sign you’re entering what feels like an ancient, magical world.

Nearby, a castle is under construction. Granite and red shale form thick walls, winding stairs, arched doorways, arrow slits, and battlements.

castle at national botanic garden

Across a rustic bridge is a tidy, tiny borough made of stone called Hobbit Town. It’s built into a slope and has snug weathered wooden doors, curved steps, undulating walls, and dangling lanterns. Jagged shale bristles like dragon spines atop one of the little homes.

And the most ancient thing of all, the birth of the universe, is rendered in a glistening silvery chrome sculpture called Interstellar that evokes the explosive energy and delicate beauty of the Big Bang.

But look closer. The rounded doorways in Hobbit Town are discarded concrete pipes, and its curved steps were once in service elsewhere. Bars and grates of the castle are from other projects’ yesterdays; its doors are from an old horse stable; and massive support beams are hand-hewn railroad ties. Bricks underfoot everywhere come from walls, walks, and driveways across the region.

The sculptures, buildings, and plantings at National Botanic Garden are the work of Peter and Beata Knop. He’s a wealthy businessman with a history of creative agricultural ventures; she’s a native of Poland with talent in art and design. They share a passion for spectacular gardens worldwide, a concern about environmental issues, and a mission to show the power of sustainability in everyday life.

peter and beata knop

What they’re doing with earth, stone, water, gardens, and reclaimed building materials is art as alchemy, combining artistic expression and ecological sustainability to create something new and valuable.

“To me, it’s magic because I work with nature,” Beata says. “Nature is magic, and nature walks with me, understands me. And I try to understand nature.”

The Dream of a National Garden

National Botanic Garden is on Peter Knop’s private land in southern Loudoun County. Most of the time, the metal gates at its entrance are closed, but the Knops welcome busloads of schoolchildren, occasional corporate groups, and garden lovers who have arranged their visit in advance. They intend the grounds to one day be an inspiring, educational destination for visitors from all over.

They say their love of compelling gardens near capitals in other countries motivates them to do the same in the United States. What they have built on the outskirts of the Washington, DC, metro area should be the United States’ national garden, Knop says.

Del. Suhas Subramanyam, who represents Virginia’s 87th House of Delegates District, sponsored a resolution this past spring that commended the Knops’ “desire to develop a great American garden that could be used for the education and enjoyment of Americans and to demonstrate unique and modern agricultural practices to other countries.”

“I love their emphasis on the environment and sustainability,” Subramanyam says. “All the things they’re trying to do are unique and add a lot of value to the community.”

The land itself is a work in progress across decades and hundreds of acres.

It was once cornfields and cattle pastures. Knop and his family have farmed in the area for generations. Starting in the 1950s, they charged contractors to dump earth excavated from construction projects. Over years, a mountain grew on the land, truckload by truckload. Now hundreds of feet high, it gives a bird’s-eye view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the farms, neighborhoods, and distant skylines of Northern Virginia.

peter and beata knop on hill at national botanic garden

At the top of Knop’s mountain is a grassy area with pine and cedar for shade and boulders for sitting. Along the road to the top are fig plants, banana trees, and swaths of winter jasmine.

To the west, Knop’s family established a swampy lowland where bald cypress trees shade black water and cypress knees by the dozens. To the east are lakes, all connected by canals or smaller lakes. At the edge of one lake sit about 50 small islands, each with a different species of bamboo, forming a maze accessible only by water.

cactus

There’s a rocky garden of cactus, yucca, cloaks of green ground cover, rosemary and lavender, and ripening pineapples. It’s a xeric garden, which means the plants thrive with a minimum of water. Water conservation is vital, Peter says, and his thriving garden demonstrates an alternative to water-thirsty grass lawns.

At the foot of the mountain is Kyoto, a hushed stand of hundreds of smooth green bamboo stalks. Water rushes down a man-made rock waterfall, and then courses across terraced levels till slowing in sharply winding bends.

Bamboo Entwined Them

Bamboo is special to Peter and Beata. They met during a garden party Peter hosted in 2005. Beata had learned to love nature as she grew up in Poland. She says she was fascinated by the variety of plants and flowers and fruits at Knop’s place.

Then the topic turned to bamboo.

“My mother always loved bamboo,” she says.

When she found Knop was growing dozens of varieties on his property and providing tender bamboo shoots as food for pandas at the National Zoo, she says, “I couldn’t believe it.”

bamboo by stream

Her passion for bamboo surprised Peter, too.

“How many people are really interested in bamboo?” he says.

Their shared love of bamboo led in time to a shared love of the land where Peter grew up and then to a shared life. Even before they married in 2006, Peter gave Beata a spot to design her first land-focused art.

“He gave me a small part of the mountain to work on, and I said, ‘I’ll take it; I’m not afraid.’” She had been painting, making collages, and designing interiors, so she knew how to approach art, but this was different.

“I stood there,” Beata recalls. “In my mind, I was talking to the land, and slowly the shape started to evolve.”

The scale and materials were new to her. It involved collaboration with Knop’s staff, who are experienced in using heavy equipment to move earth and rock.

The result: “I felt like I was on top of the world,” she says.

Materials Find a Second Life

Each project they take on involves “cooperation with nature, using material which otherwise will be discarded or dumped somewhere in the area where it should not be,” Beata says.

And it’s not just art. They use reclaimed materials in buildings on their land. An open-air shed is built with wood from torn-down buildings and lumber from trees ravaged by invasive beetles. A wide terrace is made of bricks of varied shapes and colors, each rescued from being discarded.

“Imagine what this cost to make,” Peter says, indicating a single brick among the thousands at his feet. “Think of the firing of it, the hauling of it, digging it out of the ground, and so on, and what do they do with this?”

Their interest in reusing materials in beautiful, practical ways is all-consuming, says their longtime friend and garden enthusiast Deborah De Maris of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

“This is their magnificent obsession,” she says. “It’s a gem of sustainability.

“[Beata] will take the most mundane articles that they salvage and turn it into whimsical, useful things,” De Maris says. “This collection of bamboo is something that, as a raw material, is kind of a touchstone of sustainability.”

Glenn Eck, associate director of grounds at Temple University in Philadelphia, has worked for and visited renowned gardens around the world. “The style that they’ve developed is completely unique,” he says. “Their style is a reflection of their creativity, but also the material that they’re working with, even the techniques of the crew.”

“Why Does an Artist Paint?”

The winding paths and streams found on the grounds mirror her view of life, Beata says.

“What you experience here, in my view, is life,” she says. “Up and down, going with the flow and against the flow. Everything to me is connected with my life experience. So, my emotions go into the shape of anything I create.”

The Kyoto section is an example. The waters there diverge and then come back together, some on a winding path, some on a straighter one, some cascading over rocks, and some trickling from a spring.

“This is an artistic creation using nature,” Peter says as he stands near the waterfall, shaded by the bamboo. Part of the artistic challenge is, “How do we create something in a short time frame that nature might take 10,000 years to do?”

And to answer the question of why they do it at all, Beata replies, “This is my passion. I am a creator, and I want to create something beautiful.”

Peter adds, “I think that the pleasure of creating something is a reward in itself. … Why does an artist paint?”

His question lingered in the quiet of that grove of bamboo as the waterfall continued to murmur and splash.

Loudoun Farm Tours are a biannual celebration of farming in Loudoun County, with one each for the planting in spring and the harvest in fall.

During the third weekends of May and October, Loudoun farms are encouraged to open to the public between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., offering parking, tours of operations, and an educational component that’s free and open to the public.

Loudoun Made, Loudoun Grown products, CSAs and memberships are typically available for purchase. Each tour offers a slightly different roster of participating farms, with some farms participating every year, while others cycle through.

A Unique Tradition in the Nation’s Capital Region

Begun in 1993 as the Fall Colors Tour, the tour took a more agricultural angle in the years that followed, and was conducted every harvest season including in a virtual and hybrid capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1996, Loudoun Economic Development and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office added the Spring Farm Tour to kick off the growing season in the Loudoun Valley.

In the years since, the tour has grown in size and scope, regularly drawing visitors from throughout the D.C. region and beyond.

Including waterfront cabins, historic home and farmstead

Samples of the Northern Neck’s inspiring vistas, tranquil gardens and Colonial architecture will be on display during the Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week tour in Westmoreland County in April.

Sisson/Proffitt Home

‘The owners of five homes and a flower garden in the Hague/Coles Point area will open their properties to ticket holders during the tour from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

The homes include three waterfront getaways on the Potomac River in Coles Point, the carefully-restored, centuries-old Hague House and a modern interpretation of a country farm house. This will be the first time these homes have been opened to the public. The tour also marks the first time the gardens at Lee Hall in Hague will be featured during Historic Garden Week.

“We expect over 700 guests to explore one of the most historic and beautiful counties in Virginia,” said Ann Thornton, president of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck, which is organizing the tour. Club members will decorate the homes with elaborate flower arrangements, a feature that dates back 91 years when the annual house tour was inaugurated.

Advance tickets are $40 per person at vagardenweek.org. On tour day, tickets will be $50 at the website as well as tour headquarters, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 7808 Cople Highway, Hague. Food trucks will be serving seafood and other specialties at The Hague Winery, 8268 Cople Highway, Hague. The winery will offer tastings.

The tour is partially self-driving. Parking will be available at Lee Hall, Hague House and Woodlawn. Shuttle service will be provided for the Coles Point-Salisbury Road properties. “Our club is part of the country’s only statewide house and garden tour which draws 26,000 visitors across the state each year,” Thornton said. “Net proceeds raised by the 48 local Garden Club of Virginia chapters are dedicated to the restoration of 41 important historic gardens and landscapes including Stratford Hall, Monticello and Mount Vernon.” Northern Neck tour sites will include:

Lee Hall Gardens

Lee Hall Gardens , 8311 Cople Highway, Hague, owned by Mary Young and Chuck Tracy. The gardens at Lee Hall have been maintained by members of a Westmoreland County family for three generations. They feature nearly 40 roses, beds of daffodils, old varieties of peonies and crepe myrtles, as well as other perennials. These gardens will be open to the public for the first time since 2008 when the owner closed an herb shop on the premises.

Hague House , 8667 Cople Highway, owned by Jeffrey Miller and Johnny R. Hunt. Bracketed by two double-ramped exterior chimneys and capped by a two-sided roof not found on any other local structure surviving from the era, the house was built as early as 1742. The center hall entrance retains its original pine plank floors and extends past a stairway casement sheathed in its original pine panels. Two rooms flank the hall and are visually anchored by massive brick fireplaces. The original house contained only four rooms.

Hague House

A modern kitchen occupies a fifth room, added years ago. Members of the Lee family once occupied the home, once part of early Lee family holdings in the neighborhood, which remains a landscape of farm fields and woodlots. Owners Jeffrey Miller and Johnny R. Hunt earned the John Paul Hanbury Award from the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society after restoring this compact structure in 2022.

Woodlawn , 9249 Cople Highway, owned by Betsy and George Sisson. Built in 1991, Woodlawn suggests the old farmsteads that were once the center of Northern Neck family farms in the 19th century. Built on 95 acres where cropland rotates between small grains, soybeans and corn and at the end of a long driveway lined with crepe myrtles, the setting exudes a sense of history.

Woodlawn

The two-story main structure is balanced, with wings on both sides and features a central entry foyer that welcomes guests and opens into a formal parlor, dining room and rear quarters. Wall coverings blend with trim painted in historic colors to harmonize interior furnishings and exterior charm. The rooms contain the family’s ancestral furnishings and other pieces passed down for generations. Woodlawn is surrounded by a large lawn with mature trees and extensive landscaping that includes a brick patio and swimming pool.

The Cabin

The Cabin , 1554 Salisbury Park Road, Coles Point, owned by Douglas and Kathleen Luzik. Built in 1927 at the point where Lower Machodoc Creek empties into the Potomac River, this home originally served as a hunting lodge.

The current owners bought the property in 2004 and commenced a complete renovation to winterize the structure, rebuilding a porch and adding a heating system, new roof and boat dock to create a rustic yet comfortable family getaway.

Built of pine logs harvested from nearby woods, The Cabin features a massive stone fireplace and chimney constructed of ballast stones.

Sisson/Proffitt Home , 786 Salisbury Park Road, Coles Point, owned by Rod Sisson and Corey Proffitt. Built in 1985 as a basic riverside getaway, this structure has received a series of renovations, including an upstairs en suite bedroom, first floor expansions to the primary bedroom and kitchen and windows to capture a panoramic view of the Potomac River.

The current owners have continued to develop the cottage’s personality since buying the property in 2019, refinishing its pine floors, adding wallpaper and original art, renovating a screened porch, which doubles as an outdoor living and dining area. They also converted a tool shed to serves as a gym and home office.

Potomac Delight

Potomac Delight , 182 Salisbury Park Road, Coles Point, owned by Linda Darr. Built in 1930, this spacious and airy log cabin at the tip of Coles Point commands a 180-degree view of the tidal Potomac River and the historic Ragged Point Lighthouse.

The cabin features a wide porch. Shingles conceal the log cabin’s construction from the outside, but the interior showcases the rich brown warmth of the logs that rise in parallel rows between layers of white mortar. A huge hearth constructed of smooth river stones anchors the rustic interior of this log house. The natural theme is continued with an Adirondack-style railing along the stairway to the second floor.
