“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Jeremiah was given a horrific message of destruction to deliver to God’s people, in consequence for their rebellion. But in the midst of the dreadful message came a hint of deliverance. Many of them would never live to see it, and none of it would be easy, but He made a way …through Christ. We each have a part to play in God’s plan to permeate the gospel from our neighborhoods to the far corners of the earth. God’s Word is a faithful lamp to guide us as we seek His plan for our lives.

What Does God's Plan Look Like for the World?

Though we continue to be a people that rebel against God and struggle with sin, salvation in Christ secures our eternal place in heaven. Jesus will return to earth to complete the restoration of God’s people and creation. Until then, our purpose is to tell people about Jesus verbally and visually by the way we live our lives. God’s love is life-saving, merciful, and compassionate. Through Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit lives in us, and His love flows through us.

What Does God's Plan Look Like for Me?

We’re all moving parts of God’s kingdom, bringing glory to Him through all we do. Full functioning in God’s plan feels like a personal conversation. He is faithful to lead us when we ask Him for direction. God’s plan for our lives is rooted in working hard with the gifts and talents He’s given us in order to meet the needs in our community and around the world.

How Do I Know if I'm Following God's Plan for Me?

Writer Star Walker poignantly observed that self-control, hard work, discipleship, and wisdom have a lot to do with the will of God in our lives. Daily time in prayer and in God’s Word direct us. Paul wrote to his mentee, Timothy, “ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

James wrote, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

God will meet us where we are, and place people purposefully to admonish and guide us. Praying and studying the following Scriptures, and others, will help to remind and encourage us God that has a plan.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Gratitude reflects our trust in God. He tells us to be thankful in order to right our perspective. “Our life in Christ isn’t something we can earn; it’s found in God’s grace. And for this we need to express gratitude daily.” We thank Him intentionally, for every blessing and burden because we trust His plan for our lives. He is faithful to hear and answer us, but His ways are not our ways. We may not understand a hard season until we can look back and see His hand all over it.

“Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepard of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, though Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21

It is through Jesus we are equipped to do God’s will. His plan for our lives is accomplished, not by what we can do, but on the back of Christ’s sacrifice. “May he work in us what is pleasing to him,” reflects a submissive obedience to lay down our agenda for His. We are made to crave God’s presence and glorify His name. He calls us to seek peace in our everyday lives. These verses remind us we are also created to depend on God. “His purpose from the beginning and for all time is that all human beings would always be sheep in need of a Shepherd.” -John Piper

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

The pursuit of wisdom in an important part of God’s plan. We collect knowledge throughout our lives, in tandem with the alive and active Word of God. Revealed by the Holy Spirit through prayer, God makes personal connections to grow us in wisdom. Not a God of coincidence, He purposefully builds upon the foundation of salvation with each passing day. We can even look back and learn from our memories, set to the new light of wisdom and discernment we have attained in the current day, as we grow in our faith. “We won’t act as wisely as we could, if we are ignorant of relevant reality, or if we are undiscerning of the immediate dynamics of the situation or if we simply don’t have the resolve to act, because we are lazy or afraid.” John Piper

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

God’s ways exist to protect and uphold us. In ancient civilizations, regardless of their belief systems, simple standards like justice, mercy and humility were …and still are today …required for society to function properly. (NIVCBSB) It defines a proper relationship with God (NIVSB) . God’s plan for our lives is humble, merciful, and just. To apply these characteristics to our daily lives, Veronica Neffinger advises:

Pray for it.
Support leaders who value it.
Visualize your worst enemy at the cross .
Read Luke with a highlighter.
Weed out media that negatively affects the way you act.

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:36

This verse mirrors Habakkuk 2:3-4 , “but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.”Faithfulness and holiness are a big part of God’s plan for our lives, which reflect who we are becoming in Christ. The world encourages us to follow our hearts, but God wills the pursuit of holiness in our lives. “Paul states in 1 Thessalonians 4:3 , ‘For this is the will of God- your holiness.’” (Daniel Hess) The original Greek word for perseverance in Hebrews 10:36 means steadfastness, constancy, and endurance. “The characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings.” (Thayer and Smith)

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14

The Spirit of God is given to us through salvation in Jesus Christ. The Spirit leads by revealing, interpreting, and re-calling the Truths of God. “God is the Father of all in the sense that he created all and his love and providential care are extended to all. But not all are his children …People become children of God through faith in God’s unique Son, and being led by God’s Spirit is the hallmark of this relationship.” (NIVSB) Working hard with our God-given gifts as we are led by the Spirit confirms our callings. “Doing something ‘by the Spirit’ means being ‘led’ to do it by the Spirit. He is not an instrument in our hands. We are an instrument in his hands. We are not leading him. He is leading us. He is not a mere responder to us. We are being moved and led by him.” (John Piper)

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Galatians 3:26-27

The Greek word for through in the context of verse 26 infers the ground or reason by which something is or is not done. “To belong to Christ is to be a child of God with all the stupendous privileges implied in that relationship.” (John Piper) God’s plan in our lives is not constructed upon our strengths or by what we can accomplish, but by His strength and our faith to submit to it. The VOICE paraphrase beautifully states: “But now you have arrived at your destination: By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe-Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise.”

Teach me Your way, O Lord, that I may walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name. Psalm 86:11

Pastor Jonathan Parnell says, “An unfortunate side effect of repeatedly praying the same prayer is that, over a period of time, it can lose its sense of pertinence. One way to keep it fresh is to unpack the content with language that expresses what you mean in a new way.” He was speaking of the IOUS acronym written by John Piper in “When I Don’t Desire God.” The “U” stands for “Unite my heart to fear your name” from Psalm 86:11 . When we pray verses like this over our lives His presence may unlock our next step.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that He hears us- whatever we ask- we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15

The Voice paraphrase of these verses is prefaced with the heading, “The Reality, Not the Illusion.” Nowhere in this verse does it say if He hears us He might give us what we ask. Our confidence comes from His unchanging character, and His ability to keep His promises. We do not accomplish His plan and purpose in our lives on our own strength, but by His, alone. Andy Davis says, “Despite the value of this rich, full, continual contentment- and despite the fact that its possible for every Christian in the world to experience- this exquisite jewel is rare in our lives. And how desperately the unsaved world needs Christians to discover it.” Confidence in God blesses our lives with contentment.

Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you- guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 2 Timothy 1:14

Paul wrote this verse to Timothy, and it greatly concerned the plan God had for both of their lives. God has entrusted the gospel to us, each gifted differently by which we will glorify it in our lives. The Message paraphrase reads, “So keep at your work, this faith and love rooted in Christ, exactly as I set it out for you. It’s as sound as the day you first heard it from me. Guard this precious thing placed in your custody by the Holy Spirit who works in us.” Christ charged us with the Great Commission , to spread the Gospel to all corners of the earth. What He wills, will be.

How You Can Trust God's Plan

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

It’s not going to be easy for us to trust God and follow Christ. “Each one of us has a life plan,” wrote Mary Southerland, “But the only plan that matters is the plan made for you by the One who formed you- the One who loves you, knows you and has set you apart to be His own. And it is a great plan!” The NET version of Proverbs 3:5-6 says to “acknowledge him in all you ways.” Submission and acknowledgement are expression of honor and humility. In a world telling us to follow our dreams, we must trade self-consumed plans with God-ordained purposes. God’s plans unfold in the daily steps of obedience in our lives.

Keep these ten verses close in proximity and prayer, and add to them the ones God has revealed to your heart. His love is unfailing, His plans immovable, and His strength unstoppable. Through Christ, we can do great things …impossible things. Whatever gifts we’ve been given, come with a God-purposed plan.

7 Keys to Trust God’s Plan for Your Life

God has a plan for your life. Start taking these steps today to trust God’s plan for your life and begin following where God leads.

How is God calling you? What new dreams is he whispering into your heart? What path is he asking you to follow?

Are you ready to follow God with confidence – or you a bit unsure about taking these next steps? Not sure how to follow where God leads or if walking this narrow path will be worth it?

I’m on this journey too, learning to follow where God leads. I’ve been allowing God to bring new dreams to life and lead me in new directions. But it’s not an easy road.

If you’re ready to step into God’s plan for your life, then you’ll need these 7 keys to learning to trust God’s plan for your life.

The Journey of a Lifetime Begins with a “Yes”

I sat in my son’s room, rocking him to bed as I did every night. As he finished nursing and drifted off to sleep, I began to pray. Mostly I sat in the silence with God and listened, as had become my custom on these nights. Only this night, God broke through loud and clear.

He whispered a new dream into my heart. Words I couldn’t quite comprehend, a new vision I couldn’t quite see clearly.

“But how, God?” I began to ask. “Shhh…. later… will you say yes?” “Of course, yes!”

I’d been reading through the Children’s Bible with my son and the stories of Abraham and Mary’s obedience had particularly caught my attention. How they could say “yes” so readily, without any hesitation, when God called them to such unknown and unclear callings. I was awed at how fast they were in trusting God’s plan for their lives. I’d begun to wish (and pray) for such an opportunity in my life. A call to something special that I could say “yes” to – quickly, without hesitation.

Take a Step, Take a Step

Step by step, God began to reveal the path. Some came quickly, others only after months and years of waiting.

He took me to the highest mountaintops, experiencing pure unbridled joy.
He also took me through the deepest valleys, the dark night of the soul, where God felt more distant than ever before.
He took me through great trials where all I could do was lay prostrate on the floor in prayer.
And, he took me through moments of great triumph, facing fears I thought I’d never overcome, but only because he showed up when I finally took that step forward.

Through the highs and in the lows, I’ve learned to trust God’s plans for my life.

It hasn’t been an easy road – trusting God never is.

It hasn’t been quick – definitely not on any timeframe I’ve set over the years. The journey hasn’t looked anything like what I thought it would. Yet, God’s plan is always perfect and always right on time.

7 Keys to Trust God’s Plan for Your Life

1) release control of the plan.

The plan is not yours, but God’s.

As I’ve worked through the process of discernment to better understand where God is calling me, I continue to make plans to reach that destination. I’ve set timelines, next steps, milestones. Every time, God reminds me it’s his plan, not mine.

As much as I think I know where God is calling me, I don’t really know the destination or how he intends to take me there. I don’t know his reasoning for the steps in between – what I need to learn, what other pieces he needs to align, what doors aren’t ready yet to be opened.

So, let go of trying to control the plan. Have patience with the process and trust in God’s plans, not your own.

2) Stop focusing on the destination

The goal isn’t getting to the finish line, but how you develop along the way.

I’ve spent much of the journey focused on the destination. Wishing I’d be there already and out of the current situation.

God has continually reminded me, though, that it’s not about the destination, but the journey with him. Each season, each step is part of the process.

God doesn’t call you to a destination, but to a life of obedience. Along the way, he’ll be molding your heart and soul, developing you into his vision for your life.

3) Don’t worry about the “how”

God’s ways are beyond your timeline and your scope of opportunity, so trust in His ways.

Each time I reached an impossible next step and couldn’t see how I could possibly move to the next phase of this journey, God moved in ways only he can move.

God’s ways are bigger than our ways. He can do the impossible. Let God be in charge of the “how” in your life and know that he’s big enough to clear the path for you when he’s ready.

4) Prepare for a challenging journey ahead

Following where God leads is never easy. Be prepared to walk through mountaintops and valleys alike.

Your journey of obedience will challenge you in every way possible. You will walk through the darkest seasons and triumph on the highest mountains. It will be a journey of ups and downs.

Yet, through it all, God will be by your side. Following God is not an easy path, but it is the best path.

5) Put God first

Following where God leads will require sacrifice.

Saying “yes” to God means saying “no” to other things. Following God means dying to self, giving up your own dreams and ambitions, realigning your priorities and objectives.

Allow God to kill off some dreams while he brings to life new ones. You may be called to sacrifice time, money, friendships, careers, comforts, and more.

You will learn to put God first, with everything else falling in step behind.

6) Trust that God will equip you at the right moment

When God says “step”, trust that he’ll show up to equip you – usually only after you’ve taken the first step.

God doesn’t call you to the comfortable, to what you already know. He calls you to the deep, to something beyond what you can do on your own.

Next steps will feel beyond the possible. You’ll feel out of your element and wondering if you can do it at all. Yet, God will equip you to what he calls you to do. He only asks that you trust him and take the first step.

Trust that when God says “step”, he will equip you at just the right moment.

7) Know that saying “yes” to God will always be worth it.

Following the narrow road is not an easy one, yet it is the one that brings everlasting life. You’ll live a life filled with joy, peace, comfort, gratefulness, confidence, and strength. You’ll be filled with a purpose, a passion, and big, God-sized dreams.

Yes, the road of saying “yes” to God may be difficult and filled with dark and uncertain days, doubts and questions, trials and challenges – but it will all be worth it in the end, when you’re living according to God’s will for your life and bearing fruit for his kingdom.

“Is it time yet, God? When can I step into this dream you’ve planted in my heart?

“Shhh… Trust me…” “Yes, Lord. Wherever you lead, I’ll follow.”

Where Is God Calling You?

Maybe you’ve heard such a clear call. Maybe not… Yet, be sure that God is calling you.

Your call won’t look the same as mine – or the same as your friend, relative, neighbor. God calls us each individually to the role he wants us to fill in his Kingdom.

Most of all, God wants your whole heart and your total surrender to his lead.

Will you follow? Will you trust him with your life? Are you ready to say “yes”?

Seek and you will find . Knock and the door will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7)

Waking up feeling purposeless is incredibly frustrating. You look around and see your friends and coworkers living passionate, engaged, meaningful lives. They have deep relationships, rewarding jobs and a sense of direction that compels them to hop out of bed each morning with a spring in their step.

You know that God has something good in store for you. You don’t believe he intends you to live a life of painful drudgery in which each day is a total drag. After all, the Bible is chock full of passages about joy. While this certainly doesn’t mean that every single day is a parade and circus, it does mean that an overall sense of gladness should permeate your life.

In Psalm 63:7, David said, “…for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” How can you get to that place? Where, instead of wandering aimlessly through life, you’re actually singing for joy (or just making a joyful noise if you’re not the singing type)?

In this post, we’re going to first talk about some key signs that you may not be living in the fullness of God’s purpose for you. Then we’ll give some key suggestions for how to begin living a meaningful, enthusiastic, joyful life.

6 SIGNS THAT YOU MAY NOT BE LIVING IN GOD’S PURPOSE

Before we dive into this point, we need to make at least one caveat. In one sense, you are always living in God’s purpose. God is God and He works all things, including your life, according to his purposes. Nothing can happen without God ordaining it.

Psalm 57:2 says, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” This is key in understanding God’s purpose for your life. God has numbered your days and will fulfill every purpose He has for you.

However, our choices and actions also really matter. In some ways, this is a mystery we can’t fully understand, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. We can choose to do things that will bring us more joy and give us more of a sense of purpose. That’s where we’re headed in this post. We want to help you identify those choices you can make to bring more excitement and God-given purpose into your life.

But first, here are 6 signs that you don’t have much purpose in your life.

YOU’RE BLATANTLY LIVING IN SIN.

Let’s start with the obvious here. If you’re blatantly disobeying the Bible, you’re not living in God’s purpose and you will certainly experience a sense of aimlessness in your life. This one is pretty straightforward so we don’t need to spend too much time here.

YOU LACK JOY AND EXCITEMENT.

If you wake up every day filled with apathy or dread or total boredom, you’re probably not doing what you were meant to do. God has created you uniquely, has really good things planned for you and one of the fruits of the Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22). Sure, there will be difficult things you encounter that require patience and persistence, but overall you should have a sense of joy and excitement that fills your days, your work and your relationships.

In his book “Desiring God,” John Piper says:

The pursuit of joy in God is not optional. It is not an “extra” that a person might grow into after he comes to faith.

YOU DON’T FEEL MUCH FULFILLMENT IN LIFE.

If you go about your days experiencing little fulfillment, you may be wandering from your God-given purpose. Fulfillment comes from doing rewarding, meaningful, purposeful things. From a job that taps into your skills and passions. From a relationship that involves giving and receiving. From hobbies that are invigorating instead of mind-numbing. Yes, you’ll have to do certain things that are boring and unfulfilling, but if you’re entire life is gray, you probably need a change.

YOU WORK SO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORK.

You know the feeling of pointless work. You go to the office, clock in, do your job, then go home and collapse in front of the television. You work for the weekends and for retirement. All true joy you experience comes from things outside of work. From hobbies or friends or side jobs.

Ecclesiastes 8:15 says, “And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.”

Would you say that this kind of joy characterizes your life and work? If not, you may need to rethink where you’re headed.

YOU FEEL STUCK.

If you desperately want a change but also feel totally stuck in your life, that’s almost certainly a sign that you’re not walking according to God’s purpose. Those who are stuck want to go in a particular direction but don’t know how to get there. So they spin their wheels, feeling endlessly frustrated but unsure of how to make the frustration end. Do you feel trapped?

YOU HAVE NO DIRECTION.

If you don’t know God’s purpose for your life, you constantly feel a sense of aimlessness. You feel as though you’re wandering from thing to thing without any forward progress. Nothing excites you and you don’t have any specific goals you’re working toward. Unlike the Israelites, who wandered for 40 years yet still had a goal (the Promised Land), you don’t even have a goal in front of you.

6 WAYS TO REGAIN YOUR PURPOSE

In his classic book “The Lord of the Rings,” J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a poem that included the line, “Not all who wander are lost.” The same applies to you. Even though you feel like you’re wandering without any true purpose, that doesn’t mean you’re lost. You can regain your sense of purpose and discover what God has for your life.

Here are 6 ways to discover God’s purpose for your life.

GO TO GOD IN PRAYER.

Again, let’s start with the obvious. If you feel purposeless, ask God to give you wisdom and direction. James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

That’s incredibly good news. God wants to give you a purpose. He wants to bestow divine wisdom on you. It’s not like God is holding out on you to make you miserable. He desires you to have a joyful, ambitious, purposeful life. Ask God for purpose and expect Him to give it to you.

DIG INTO GOD’S WORD.

The primary way God speaks to us is through the Bible. This means that one of the first things you should do in your search for God’s purpose is to start digging into scripture. Now, you won’t find any verses that tell you to become a dance instructor or painter, but you will begin to understand the heart of God.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s word brings light to paths that otherwise seem dark. In the Bible you learn how to live wisely in God’s world, which is the first step toward finding your purpose.

DETERMINE YOUR GIFTS AND STRENGTHS.

God has given you very specific gifts and strengths. Maybe you’re a math whiz or a wise counselor. Maybe you have a mind for electronics or business. Maybe you’re great at organizing people and getting things done. God’s purpose for you probably involves the things you’re already good at.

This is where education can be particularly valuable. Going to college or going back to college allows you to discover your gifts and then determine how you’re going to use them. It also connects you with people who want to help you find your purpose.

DETERMINE YOUR PASSIONS.

What is one thing you’re particularly passionate about? Really, this can be anything. Business, art, economics, alleviating poverty, whatever. If money wasn’t an issue, what would you love to do?

Determining your passions often helps you figure out what God has called you to do. It’s often said that God works at the intersection of our gifts and our passions. Where do your gifts meet your passions? That may be God’s purpose for you.

BRING OTHERS INTO YOUR LIFE.

Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” In other words, one of the main ways God will help you find your purpose is through others.

A caveat needs to be made here. Your counselors should be people you trust. Whether this is your professors, parents or friends, it needs to be people who have your back and want the best for you. You want wise counselors to help you find God’s purpose for you.

TAKE A SOLITUDE RETREAT.

Sometimes it can be incredibly helpful to get away from it all and take some unhurried time to think, pray and journal. You don’t have to spend a week in the woods for this to be effective. Even just a day away from the hustle and grind can be hugely rewarding.

During these retreats, allow yourself to simply be still. To ponder. To ask God for direction and listen for His voice. This doesn’t need to be complicated and doesn’t require any elaborate rituals. Hebrews 11:6 is a reminder that God always rewards those who seek him. He’s not hiding in the dark, trying to keep his will hidden from you. He wants to guide you.

IN THE END, TRUST GOD

Trying to discover your life purpose can be a stressful, overwhelming thing. It can seem like such a big, confusing, frustrating subject. You want to move forward, but you’re not sure how. You want to find your purpose, but you feel like you’re aimlessly wandering.

But you can trust God to lead you where he wants you to go. As Psalm 23:2-3 says, “He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

You may feel confused, but God doesn’t.

Our Journey with God

Introduction

“Life’s a journey, not a destination,” Steven Tyler sang in the rock band Aerosmith’s 1993 song, “Amazing.”

Amazing doesn’t quite describe the quirky fact that the very same phrase Aerosmith used in 1993 was used in 1920 by Methodist pastor and theologian Lynn H. Hough in a Sunday school lesson outline on the New Testament letter of 1 Peter: “ life is a journey and not a destination .” However, we may want to hear the rest of the quote to make sense of it:

Life is a journey and not a destination; that the heart must be set upon those matters of character which are eternal and not upon those matters of sensation which pass away.

I think Steven Tyler would have been as shocked as Lynn Hough that their view of life was shared in this instance.

Yet, both of them echo a reality woven throughout the Scripture about our lives as human beings: we are on a journey through our days. Ideally, that journey is with God, but regardless of whether we believe in God or not, “journey” is the way we experience life.

One of the places where this comes clear in Scripture is in a little section of the Old Testament Book of Psalms known as the Psalms of Ascent.

The Psalms of Ascent consist of 15 psalms, from 120 through 134. While there are different ideas about what the “ascent” referenced in this group is all about, the most likely possibility is that these psalms were sung and prayed by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem. They were traveling to the temple in celebration of the three main festivals of the Hebrew people: Passover, Pentecost, and Booths (Exodus 23:14-17). No matter where they were, they would ascend toward Jerusalem because it was on the heights, but also because it was symbolically the spiritual high point where God dwelt with human beings.

These pilgrim songs, these road-trip prayers, acted like a soundtrack for the people of God in their travels. They took the Hebrew people back to the nomadic faith journey of Abraham and the liberation journey of the Exodus. It was a reminder that they were a people on the way with God.

These psalms do the same for us today as well. They remind us that our life with God is a journey. It is a journey with God, but also a journey with his people on the way to the eternal kingdom.

The writer to the Hebrews in the New Testament describes God’s people as “foreigners and strangers on earth … looking for a country of their own” (Hebrews 11:13-14). With the Psalms of Ascent we sing and pray a soundtrack for the pilgrimage of our life with God, not just to Jerusalem, but to the eternal country that is our heavenly home in God for eternity.

In these Psalms of Ascent we see what it means to be shaped spiritually by God and his truth more than the surrounding context of our world. In a culture set on instantaneous achievement, instantaneous acquisition, instantaneous food out of a microwave or vending machine, we know life does not really work that way. The Psalms of Ascent slow us down enough so that we can take our time on a journey with God. There are certain things that we need in our lives, in our souls, if we are really going to grow with God over the long haul. These psalms show us what it means to grow over time, not in an instant; what it means to live life on a pilgrimage, where we draw nearer to seeing God in space and time every hour of our lives.

Beginning with the Lord in Our Distress

In the 2010 movie The Way we follow Tom, an American doctor, who receives the shocking news that his estranged adult son has unexpectedly died in a storm while hiking the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James. Dealing with his unresolved grief, Tom decides to honor his son’s desire to complete the Camino by embarking on the historical pilgrimage himself. Unprepared and not physically conditioned for it, Tom’s journey takes him beyond himself. He encounters his need for others, his need for resolution of his grief, and his need for a deeper spiritual meaning in life.

The film is moving to watch and parallels some of the real reasons people walk this historic pilgrimage path today. Some friends of mine run a hostel at the end of the Camino, in the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela. Time and again they encounter people who are searching for something in their lives. Many are in the midst of distress and the walk along the Camino de Santiago becomes a pilgrimage not only physically but spiritually, as they seek a breakthrough to a deeper, more spiritual reality in life.

For most of us, the journey of our lives involves moments of distress. This is how Psalm 120 begins.

When we think about going on a spiritual journey, this may feel like a strange way to start. However, it shouldn't feel strange because the beginning of our own journey with God involves coming to the end of ourselves. It begins with us saying, “Save me, God.”

Life is all about this. If life is about nothing else, it's about realizing that we are, if I can borrow bit of a language from Alcoholics Anonymous, powerless to change ourselves. We need a higher power. You may know that AA has its roots in Christianity. This acknowledgment that change happens when we come to the end of ourselves and reach out to God is just what we see in Psalm 120:1-2. Of course, that is not just true of alcoholics. It's true of anyone who exists on earth.

If you've been on the journey with God, you know this. So many times in our lives, we come to the end of ourselves because of physical situations in our lives, because of spiritual realities that we're dealing with, because of emotional difficulties in our lives, because of relational things that are happening, or even the broader challenges in the world around us. Sometimes simply reading the news is enough to bring us to the end of ourselves.

The journey with God begins by simply saying, “I do not have it in myself to make it in the abundant life, the best life possible and so, God, would you save me because I actually am in distress in one way or another.” That beginning is marked by honesty with God .

Sometimes when people come to church they think they need to put on a game face. It’s the religious game face with the religious answers and the religious smile that says everything is great. But the reality is different. We come to worship from a lot of different places and some of us are not great now. Don't misunderstand me. God is still great. God is still good. He's still almighty. However, there are moments of distress that come in our lives, when one of the most spiritual things we can do is to admit it before God and everybody else. It doesn't mean we stay in that place forever, but we say, “God, I need you.” Wherever we are coming from in this moment today, it is good to simply express to God, “I need you.”

When we get honest with God in prayer—admit that we have needs, admit that we have distress, admit that we have come to the end of ourselves—something new begins. It says in Scripture that God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). That does not mean we have to walk around heavy-hearted all the time. It does means that when we cannot carry ourselves, God loves to step in and carry us. The meaning of the incarnation of Jesus is that God steps inside of humanity’s broken existence that he might carry us back to himself; that we might be reconciled back to God through Christ. The honest admission of our need to God is the beginning of our journey with God.

Distress can open something up for us when we call to God, when we let him be, as verse two says, our Savior. That's the personal name of God, Yahweh : “Yahweh, please save me from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.” Now, here's the reality about distress. Sometimes there is distress inside of us and at other times there is distress surrounding us. God is the kind of being who, when we say, “I need you, I'm in distress,” he is there and he saves. Whether it's the internal distress or the surrounding distress, God is a Savior big enough for the external and the internal distress in our lives.

Is anybody in distress today? Are you feeling it on the inside? Are you feeling it around you? Do you feel it in the nation? Do you feel it in the world? God is not bound by what's inside of us or what's beyond us. He is the Almighty God and God is also close at hand.

Untangling Falsehood with God’s Truth

Have you ever had somebody tell lies about you? There is nothing you can do about it. I mean, you could try. I’m not encouraging this, but you could punch the person in the face so they couldn't talk. You could try that, but it would not stop the root of the problem. Maybe you wish you had a mute button on other people. Just be careful. They may wish they had a mute button on you, too.

What can lies do to you? Well, lies can do some things to you. They can ruin your reputation. They can make things very difficult for you. They can make circumstances bad. They can make people you love become people you hate. What can lies do to you? A lot of things, but not everything. There is a limit on what lies can do. The real question is: What can God do in the midst of lies?

(Read Psalm 120:3-4)

Sounds extreme, doesn't it? How does God feel about lies? Well, this is what it says in Proverbs 12:22, “Yahweh detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”

When lies come against us or when lies come out of our mouth, God is not full of joy. He detests that. Why? Because he is a God of truth and there will come a day, the scriptures tell us, when the truth will be revealed. If I needed a sermon illustration, I could easily just point at the news. Again and again, no matter how hard we try to hide things that are in the darkness, the truth comes out. There will come a day when all the lies that people use to cover over darkness will be brought into the light. Honestly, it will be a scary moment when the lies of our lips are shown to be the lies that they are.

It says here in Psalm 120 that God advocates for truth and he actually stands against those who are liars. This reflects what Jesus says in John 8:44 about the devil. “When he [the devil] lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). The problem is that sometimes we learn the native language of the devil and we take it inside of ourselves. The apostle Paul says this to the early church: “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices” (Col. 3:9).

Contrary to lying is loving one another, carrying each other's burdens, and being a person who is trustworthy and true. Scripture offers us a picture of the end of human history, that shows even if there are lies that have been placed out there, God will come and brings the fullness of his kingdom. What is that kingdom like? This is the way it is described in Zephaniah 3:12-13:

I will leave within you the meek and humble. The remnant … will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.

This does not sound like the rulers of the earth, does it? This describes the fulfillment of Psalm 120. God is at work in the midst of the world, and though lying lips may do things to us in our lives, God is our defender standing in the truth, standing against the father of lies and all those who have learned his language, even when it gets inside of us. God stands against that and calls us to be the kind of people who are not only standing in the truth ourselves, but are actually protected by the father of truth. This is the invitation to a becoming a different sort of person, living by a different sort of story, in the midst of a different sort of journey?

Living for Peace in the Midst of Conflict

“Well,” you may say, “that sounds good, Matt, but my life is not like that. You don’t know what my workplace is like and what my neighborhood is like.” I understand that. But listen to what the Psalmist says next.

(Read Psalm 120:5)

Meshek and Kedar may be a bit confusing. Meshek is in present-day Turkey, beyond the northern-most border of the land of Israel, and Kedar is located in present-day Saudi Arabia, south of the land of Israel. These are two foreign peoples located at the extreme opposite ends of Israel.

When the people would go on pilgrimage, they would come from a lot of different places around the land. This writer of Psalm 120 is not saying that he’s necessarily living in these places, but that these two peoples serve as figurative names of the barbarian people that he is in the midst of (Kidner, Psalms 73-150, p. 430). He’s saying, “Oh man, the people I live in and around, they remind me of the heathen barbarians. That's the way that I feel right now. They are these people far off in the furthest reaches and not at all like God’s people.”

We could ask ourselves, who or what is our Meshek and Kedar today? Meshek and Kedar are different things for each of us. They are places we feel like we find ourselves amidst people where God’s truth and way is not upheld. They are the places we find ourselves where a kind of heathen imagination and imagination that's far from God takes us captive. Meshek and Kedar represent what’s happening when we find ourselves trying to live for God, trying to be on pilgrimage, trying to see the celestial city that we're aiming for, trying to hear God's voice, but all we can hear is the rumblings of the chaotic mindset contrary to God around us.

Do you ever experience these sorts of realities? It is almost as if the psalmist feels unable to see beyond the chaos into the destination of the journey. “Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek, that I live among the tents of Kedar. Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.”

The prayers in the Psalms of Ascent are songs of a people on the journey with God, even in the midst of people, lands, and times that are at odds with God. As we take this pilgrimage with God, we join in prayer together, singing these songs many times in a land and in the presence of people that seem to be against us. Even when we feel like someone is against us or like the territory or environment is at odds with our faith journey, it is an opportunity.

The journey with God starts right where we are, right in the midst of the chaos of the world around us. We cannot wait to get to another place that is difficulty-free to start the journey. Instead, we start the journey in the midst of opposition, right in the places that are not for peace, right in the places that seem to be dead-set against God's ways, even the places where conflict and lies seem gathered around. In the mist of those places, the people of God can step forward and say, “In this place, I am for God. I am for truth. I am for his ways.” That is where the journey begins.

The prayers of the people on pilgrimage arise from a community joining together on the journey in an alien, or even hostile, place. They sing these song as they journey together, and that, too, is instructive to us. The journey with God is not just something you do on your own. The Psalms of Ascent are a communal journey. Imagine a group of a cluster of people off on the very edges of Israel, maybe past Syria, towards the land of Meshek, and they’re beginning to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. As they traverse the land, they begin to sing Psalm 120. One person starts the song and the hearts that are heavy and the minds that are worn out from living amidst a people opposed to God begin to join in with the song together. Sometimes you just need somebody else to start the song so you can join in and get going on the journey together as well.

This week I received a song like that. Actually, it was a WhatsApp message from one of our friends who serves in another part of the world and is enduring some great hardships and violence. She reached out to a number of us requesting prayer and many of us responded with little messages of encouragement, saying things like, “We’re with you and we're praying for you.” After a while, she responded: “Thank you, Lord, for giving me spiritual family that can never be taken away!”

These prayers and songs of the people on the journey with God are prayed together. They are sung together because we need each other, and it's when we pray and sing together that our hearts are lifted up beyond the circumstances and the environment that’s opposed to God or us. When we reach out to one other and say, “We’re with you. We journey together,” the burden becomes lighter. We carry one another's burdens, lift one another's arms when we cannot go on, and we start to sing the songs of the Lord.

That's the journey of the people of God. It's not just one person but clusters of people. Is there a group of people around you who lifts your arms when you cannot rise? Are there people around you who can start to sing the song when you cannot sing the song yourself? Is there somebody there you can reach out to and say, “Pray for me because I am dwelling in the land of Meshek and Kedar.” We need each other.

(Read Psalm 120:6-7)

When we read this psalm, for some of us it is easiest to relate to the troubles dwelling in Meshek and living in Kedar. But the movement of this psalm is toward peace, not toward sitting in the darkness or giving into the hatred around us.

That word, “peace,” is the well-known Hebrew word shalom . It’s one of the most prominent words in the Hebrew Bible. It does not simply mean inner peace or the absence of conflict. It means that everything is right and good in God’s world as he intends it to be. Biblical peace is not just personal, but is a social and relational peace. It means that the community is truly together, not just living without strife, but actually living with things being right, good, and harmonious, individually and together.

In light of the context of Meshek and Kedar, peace here means God’s people are free from judgment, oppression, and warfare. It means God’s people are living the good life, the way that God intended it to be, regardless of their setting. That is true both personally and in relationship with other people. Shalom .

This is the intention of God, but the world we live in feels so different. It is full of strife. We encounter that every day in some form. We see it in the major cities of our world, and we see it in our own city. We feel it in our families and in our friendships. We experience it in ourselves. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matt. 5:9). Then James writes, “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:18).

Now, in a world of chaos and division, in a world of hatred and injustice, in a world where people use each other and things, it can look like the world is going to hell in a hand basket. In a world like that, the tendency for us, even as Christians, is sometimes to slide into hopelessness or hatred.

However, Psalm 120, which begins the journey of the Psalms of Ascent declares,

Even though I'm in the midst of an environment that's at odds with God, I choose to be the kind of person who does not slide into hopelessness. Neither do I slide into hatred. I set my eyes on God. I begin the journey with God. I choose to be a person aiming for the good life—the life of true shalom— in myself and for the community of God and for those beyond that sphere, so that people might be blessed through me, even as Abraham was called to be a blessing to every nation of the earth (Genesis 12:1-3).

This is peace-making, this bringing of blessing, is a mark of the journey with God from the very beginning.

Of course, the truth about intending to do something like that is we cannot create it ourselves. But there is One who can. His name is Jesus. He was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, who described the Messiah as “the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). When he spoke with his disciples before the suffering of the Cross, he said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). Jesus, the Prince of Peace, can bring his peace into our lives and also bring his peace through us into the world around us.

As we think about the nature of our spiritual journey with the Psalms of Ascent, I would like to suggest four ways we can respond and make this real for us in our own lives.

First, some of us need to simply begin the journey and stop waiting for everything to get better. We should not wait for God to lift us out of the land of Kedar and Meshek, but begin with God right where we are.

Second, some of us in this place need to call out to God with honesty and brokenness. Perhaps you have been afraid to be honest with God in your life. This is the moment that can change. The journey with God is one that is marked by honesty and vulnerability. And so, perhaps the biggest step for some of us is simply to call out to God from the honesty of our lives, saying, “God, I’m in distress. I need your help. I want to begin with you.”

For others of us, God may be telling us that we need community in our lives. Perhaps that means reaching out to somebody else around you and asking, “Would you pray with me that I might be touched by God and his saving work in my life?” Even now, some of us need to reach out to others in our lives and say, “I need a group of people around me who can help me journey on the way.”

The truth is that we're not meant to do it alone. But I really believe there are some of us who have slid into hopelessness and God wants to replace that hopelessness with his peace. Maybe it's the hopelessness of your circumstances. Maybe it's the hopelessness of your health. Maybe it's the apparent hopelessness of the world or the strife in our nation. It really does not matter what form your hopelessness takes. It's time to take the hopelessness and bring it to the Cross of Christ and say, “God, would you be my peace.” It will not help us to crawl into some quiet place inside of ourselves or to hunker down somewhere in society when what we really need to do is crawl into the presence of God and let him be our hope.

Lastly, some of us have slid into the tendency of hatred toward others, and it is time to shed hatred because that is antithetical to the ways of God who wants to be our peace and, through us, shed peace upon others. Though we live in the tents of Kedar and dwell in Meshek, God wants to move us through the place of a hatred, and into the place of peace. Maybe today is the day to say,

God, I choose to let go of hatred toward myself. I choose to let go of hatred toward somebody in my family. I choose to let go of hatred toward some category of people in the world or toward some place in the world. Instead, God, I'm drawing near to you. I want you to be my peace. I want to go on the journey with you.

Let me simply say out loud that we cannot hide in our hatred. It will not protect us. Our hatred actually makes us vulnerable. But in the presence of God, we can draw near and enter the place of peace.

Wherever we are at this morning, let’s join together on the journey with God, letting the Psalms of Ascent be the songs, the prayers, the soundtrack for our journey.

God’s Journey for Your Life

“So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David” (Luke 2:4).

Joseph and Mary’s plans were disrupted, to say the least. Life became different and difficult for them, including the 7-10 day trip they took from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Not to mention “no room in the inn” once they got there.

Failed business ventures, family harmony turned into hysteria, broken Christmas traditions, and basically the entire year of 2020—these are like road construction projects rerouting you from your intended path.

“Why, Lord? This isn’t supposed to be.”

So, we disagree with God, because we are being detoured from our planned path. But what if our plan is the detour?

What if the rerouted paths we are on right now are God’s journey for our lives? What if the difficulties of 2020 are not potholes to avoid, but the promises of God shaping the purposes he has for us?

We each have our Bethlehem, our change of destination, our different or difficult path. Instead of blaming God for this year’s difficulties or shaming the year 2020 as the worst ever, can I challenge you to find your Bethlehem? To have faith in God’s promises and purposes that are bigger than you?

God perfectly, lovingly directs your paths for your good. He always keeps his promises to be near you, go ahead of you, and stay behind you. The question is, do you trust those promises? Will you follow them?

Jesus knows the way

Jesus’ path became different and difficult, too. Jesus left his own comfort zone of heavenly bliss, and became human and lived in our messy world. God the Father’s journey for Jesus guided him through life experiences to the cross where he suffered injustice.

Jesus saw it as God’s path, even into death, but then beyond death to rising from the dead and living in glory. He is the Savior who now leads and guides you. His Bethlehem is your 2020. Paths filled with the promises of God for those willing to learn and follow.

So enjoy the journey! Celebrate 2020 not as a frustrating detour or failed destination, but as God’s journey for your life.

PRAYER: God, you guide and direct my paths, including this difficult year. Help me to believe more clearly in your journey for my life, and to look for you leading me to Jesus. To his forgiveness, peace and joy. Amen.

FURTHER MEDITATION: Read Psalm 25:4,5. Look carefully at the pronouns in this verse. Whose “ways” do we seek? Not ours, but the Lord’s. Whose “paths” are there for us to take if we’re willing to learn them? The Lord’s perfect paths where you can’t get lost. Whose “truth” is there to guide our journey in the right direction? Not our limited understanding or flawed opinions, bug God’s truth. And why can we trust and follow all of this? Because “you are God my Savior.” Not just tour guide. Not just bodyguard. You save me, God, because I can’t save myself. You forgive my sins and make me your own child, God. You deliver me. You keep me safe. So my hope is in you, God, all the time.

God’s journey for your life always does this one thing: it leads you to his saving love. The paths may be different or difficult. But like God led Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem where his Son would be born, God leads you always to his Son Jesus. By rerouting you, God is saving you and bringing you closer to his saving love.

Our Journey with God

How do I know God is really with me on my journey to find a home with him?

Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away (Genesis 5:24).

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:9-10).

In authentic relationship with other believers — Jesus, as Immanuel, joins us in our gathering together (Matthew 18:20).
In compassionate care of those in need — Jesus is Immanuel that we see in those to whom we give loving care (Matthew 25:40).
In leaving the comfort of our culture to walk along beside others to help them learn to journey with God, and to live the way of Jesus — Jesus, as Immanuel, goes with us always (Matthew 28:18-20).

A Prayer to Reflect on Who Jesus Is during Lent By Meg Bucher

The Lenten season causes me to take a deep breath each year as Catholic school memories flood my mind. They are good memories. I can’t remember a day when I didn’t love Jesus …even before I understood who He was.

Lent is an amazing time of reflection. Whether you grew up Catholic like me, or this is your first time trying to figure out what it is, it will help you get to know Jesus better. I love that God’s journey for me has allowed me to be a part of many congregations: Catholic, Brethren, Methodist, Pentecostal, and Nondenominational. When we listen and lean in His direction, we drink in so much we might have passed by.

Maybe you’re like me, and though you are no longer a part of your original congregation, you can look back and see how God has layered levels of wisdom into your faith through it. It astonishes me. There are Christians in every denomination, so this isn’t going to be a place where I pick any of them apart. The joy in my journey lies in the people God placed in those churches … priests, pastors , youth leaders, and teachers—faithful servants of God.

Being a part of so many places has given me an appreciation for people seeking more of God and how important it is to know the Bible for ourselves. Our personal relationship with Jesus is bigger than, and cannot be experienced solely through, any church or denomination. Any good pastor or leader will encourage us to seek the Father first in His Word.

Pastors, leaders, teachers … they all make mistakes. Not every denomination is 100% biblically sound. It’s important to know what is and what isn’t. That is what Lent is all about. It’s a recalibration and reflection of remembering who Jesus is.

Life is a beautiful journey lived in step with the Lord. Lent is a powerful reminder that though life can be painful at times, living within the will of God allows us to walk through it with hope. If you’re anything like me, there are days I peer back into my past and know there is no way I should even be here. But because of the Gospel, I am. These 40 days of Lent are a time when I adjust my daily life to reflect deeply on my journey with Jesus. Whether it means giving something up or instilling a new habit, Lent can be an incredible time to create more margins to refocus our hearts and marinate our minds in God’s Word.

Though our faith in Christ Jesus is one of the most complex relationships, it’s also the simplest. “Come to me,” He says. We fight, scrap, pull away, and run for the hills, and He stands firm, waiting for us to turn our lives over to Him. Lent reminds us of who, and Whose, we are. We are His. Jesus left heaven to come to earth. Fully human, He felt everything we feel. Fully God, He did not sin. He’s God. But the different levels of pain and happiness and the steady joy we find when we’re connected to God … He feels all of it. He went to the cross for it. “For God so loved the world, He gave His one and only Son to save us.” That’s it.

If you’re a part of a complicated denomination, simplify it. Lent is between you and Jesus. Make some margin to connect with Him. Take the journey.

Let’s pray:

Father, You are amazing. You are! The way You have layered our lives with rich experiences that draw us to You is incredible. Thank You for loving us so specifically and faithfully. You love us for who we are right now. We are your children! Father, this Lent, we confess we are distracted. Help us to focus on Jesus, to journey with Him in reflection, looking for those intentional layers of love You have laid down in our lives. We want more of You, God. More time with You, and to know You better. You have prepared the way, God. This Lent helps us to reflect on the greatest love story of all time: Your love for us through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross.

We pray for Your Word to come alive like never before. Help us to connect to a reading plan or listen to the Bible being read regularly during this time, God. Alert us. Convict us. Remind us. Strengthen our connection to You, Father. We want to grow wiser. We want to see the people in our lives as You see them. If we are being honest, God, we want to experience healing, peace, hope, and joy. Bless us with Your favor, God. We pray to look back on this Lenten season as a time when one of those remarkable layers of wisdom was woven into our lives. Thank You for loving us. Thank You for forgiving us.

For the wounds past congregations may have left on our hearts and in our minds, God, would You provide healing only You are capable of performing. Guide us in Truth, God. Help us to forgive and heal from things that have hurt us and damaged our perception of who You are and who Jesus is. Let the purpose of Your church become something we not only understand but crave to participate in!

Father, as we journey through Lent, help us to connect with You and the people around us. Help us to see the people You have placed in our lives and plug into our congregations in places that need what only we can offer. Let the unique gifts You have placed in us be apparent, God, during this Lenten season. In this time of reflection, we want to journey with Jesus, ensuring we live our lives to the full, as He died for us to do. Let all we do bring glory and honor to You, God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The God who created the universe, the most powerful being ever, loves you personally. Try to wrap your mind around that. He loves you — not just people in general, but you as a person. He cares about your life and wants to be part of it.

Even if you’ve spent your whole life running from God or done things you regret, He still loves you and wants to have a relationship with you.

God’s love is unconditional and infinite — far, far beyond what even the best of people are capable of. God commands those who follow Him to love one another. Among sincere believers whose hearts God has changed, you can see an imperfect picture of His love.

But even the best at loving others will fall short, and they'll tell you to go to the source.

The Bible is a compilation of the words God gave people so we could know more about Him. The Bible says God loves you whatever state your life is in.

These verses from the Bible remind us of God’s wonderful, extravagant, amazing, unstoppable and unconditional love.

If you are struggling to believe that God loves you as you are, take some time to think about these verses. You could pray after reading each scripture or journal about one verse each day.

Part I: God’s Love Is Incredible, Infinite and Unfailing →

1. god’s love is perfect and is a model for how to love..

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

Can you imagine being loved like this? It would change your life. The truth is this is an accurate description of God’s love for you.

Though this passage is often read at weddings, humans cannot love perfectly as God does because we are imperfect. But it makes sense that people strive to have their love for one another reflect these qualities.

Everyone needs this type of love , but if you expect it from another person, you will be let down. God is the only one who can love you perfectly. And when you have a relationship with God and experience His love, it empowers you to love others the way God loves you.

2. When you fully experience God’s love, you have nothing to fear.

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect love. (1 John 4:18)

When you understand that God loves you no matter what, you no longer need to be afraid of your failings causing Him to love you less. If you could only truly know the depth of God’s love, you would have nothing to fear.

God already knows about the wrong things you’ve done as well as any you will do. He still chose to love you.

3. You are secure in your relationship with God: Nothing can separate you from God’s love.

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? ... No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below — indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35, 37-39)

God is more powerful than anything in heaven or on earth. When you accept Jesus’ invitation to begin a relationship with God, you are secure in His love forever. There is nothing powerful enough to separate you from God’s love. Even when things are difficult or you feel far from God, it’s not because God stops loving you. The truth is that God will never stop loving you, no matter what you do.

4. God’s love is too great to fully understand.

And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (Ephesians 3:18-19)

God’s love is so great that we, as mere humans, cannot fully understand it. Humans’ love for one another often depends at least partly on the behavior of the person being loved. God’s love for us does not.

Do you long to be known and loved for who you are? God is the only one who can truly do that.

5. God’s love is a shield surrounding you and keeping you safe.

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread Your protection over them, that all who love Your name may be filled with joy. For You bless the godly, O LORD; You surround them with Your shield of love. (Psalm 5:11-12)

God’s love is so much more than the warm fuzzy feeling we often associate with the word love. His love is a powerful force, protecting and comforting us. Being in God’s love is a position of not just joy but also safety.

When you run to God for protection, He surrounds you with His shield of love. Think about that image for a while. Experience the security you have because God’s love surrounds you. Let His love flood your mind with a sense of peace and comfort.

6. God will not let you down because His love cannot fail.

Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O LORD. How precious is Your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of Your wings. (Psalm 36:5-7)

You have probably been hurt or betrayed by someone you love at some point in your life. Maybe you have experienced this more than once. Loving and trusting other people is risky. Once one person hurts you, it becomes harder to open up to others.

In contrast, God’s love is truly unconditional. He never fails you or betrays you. You do not need to hold back in your relationship with God, because He is totally trustworthy .

When you feel let down by people, read these verses and remember this: Though people may let you down, God never will.

Part II: God’s Love for You Is Personal →

7. god calls you his child..

See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know Him. (1 John 3:1)

You are a child of God. You may have heard this phrase many times before, but take some time to let it sink in. God, your Father, calls you His child.

When you begin a relationship with God , you don’t just become God’s friend, you become His child. God delights in you and wants the best for you. He wants to fill your life with joy and blessings.

8. God chose to adopt you because He loves you.

God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. (Ephesians 1:5)

You can have a child by accident, but you cannot adopt a child by accident. When you adopt a child, you choose to love, cherish and care for that child for life. When God adopts you, it’s not an accident. He chooses to love, cherish and care for you forever. He does it because He loves you and wants an eternal relationship with you.

God loves His children as a proud Father. If you have begun a relationship with Him , you are God’s child and He delights in you.

Take a minute to think about how the God of the entire universe loves you personally and chose you to be His child.

9. God loves you so much that He sacrificed His Son for you.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

It’s hard to understand if you’re not a parent, but the love parents feel for their children is possibly the deepest love one human can have for another. If you talk to any loving parents, they probably cannot imagine any reason they would willingly let their child die.

They would much rather die than let their child die, because their child’s life is so much more important to them than their own lives.

But God loves you so much that He was willing to let His Son come to earth, be mistreated, and ultimately die for your sins so that you could become His child too. That is love that’s beyond understanding.

Part III: God Loves You Just as You Are →

10. god loved you enough to die for you when you were still rebelling against him..

But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8)

No matter how much you have messed up or how far you feel from God, He still loves you and wants a relationship with you.

Parents love their children, no matter how the children behave. If a child says, “I hate you!” it hurts. But loving parents will still love their children even when they say hurtful things or rebel. Even when you were still rebelling against God and saying, “I hate you,” He replied, “I love you” by choosing to die for you so that He could have a relationship with you forever.

You do not need to change or reach a better place before you come to God. He will help you change and get to a better place. All you need to do is accept His sacrifice and say yes to being in a relationship with God.

11. You could never earn or deserve the love God offers you.

But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) (Ephesians 2:4-5)

You do not deserve God’s love. No one does. But the amazing news is that He loves you anyway.

This is grace: God loves you so much that He paid the price to offer you the gift of eternal life. None of us deserves it based on our own actions or how religious we think we are. God’s love is a precious gift we should treasure.

Part IV: God’s Love Helps You Grow and Improve →

12. god’s love allows you to change and grow into the person he wants you to be..

Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them. (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)

God loves you just as you are, but He also loves you enough to not let you stay how you are. He wants to see you grow and change for the better . He sent Jesus to die for your sins so this would be possible. When you receive God’s forgiveness and accept God’s help, you can begin to work toward positive, lasting change.

This is another way God acts as a loving parent toward you. Parents love their kids as they are, not just as they want them to be one day. Even if they have a toddler that never listens and regularly has meltdowns in public or a teenager on a rebellious streak, parents still love their kids. At the same time, they want to see their children grow, learn and make good choices in life. Good parents love their kids enough to set limits, give them guidance and walk beside them through the good and the bad.

God does this for you. Once you choose to begin a relationship with God, you experience His forgiveness. This allows you to let go of negative aspects of your personal history and move toward positive change. You also receive His Holy Spirit, who guides you, gives you strength and is present with you every day.

13. God gives us the Holy Spirit because He wants us to be filled with His love.

And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love. (Romans 5:5)

Have you ever had someone in your life you loved so much that you wanted to be with them all the time? God feels that way about you. Not only does God love you and want a relationship with you, but He wants to be present in every moment of your life.

When you begin a relationship with God, the Holy Spirit comes into your life. He is with you through the good and the bad. You can choose to ignore the Holy Spirit’s influence, but He will never leave you. He is always waiting for you to turn back and seek His comfort, wisdom and guidance.

The Holy Spirit can help you experience and have a deeper understanding of God’s love for you. His presence in your life means you are never on your own.

14. God disciplines you to help you learn — because He loves you.

My child, don’t reject the LORD’s discipline, and don’t be upset when He corrects you. For the LORD corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Though people often associate discipline with punishment, this verse shows us that God’s discipline is more about training and teaching. That is why Jesus’ followers were called disciples, or people who follow a teacher.

When you follow Jesus, you become His disciple. In the process of learning from Jesus, some lessons will be hard or even feel like punishment. But God is not out to punish you or hurt you. He is trying to teach you. Your choices have consequences, and God usually allows you to experience those consequences. Facing hard things and overcoming them is one of the best ways to learn.

Don’t let yourself get dragged down by hardships or isolate yourself from God and others. Instead, turn to God for help and discover what He is teaching you in the process.

Part V: When Things Are Difficult, You Can Cling to God’s Love Because He Cares About You →

15. god cares when you are suffering because he loves you..

I will be glad and rejoice in Your unfailing love, for You have seen my troubles, and You care about the anguish of my soul. (Psalm 31:7)

When things are hard, it can be easy to feel alone or like no one cares. But God cares. He cares about your sadness and hardships. He cares about your suffering . Why? Because God loves you.

Even when things seem hopeless , you can still hope in God. God does not promise He will fix our problems in the immediate sense. We will experience pain and suffering and sorrow. But He does promise that one day, everyone who has a relationship with Him will spend eternity in His presence, where suffering and sorrow will be gone forever.

But God is not just telling us, “It will get better later,” and leaving it at that. God hurts when you hurt because He loves you. He is always there to comfort you with His unfailing love as you bring your struggles to Him.

16. Even when things seem hopeless, you can hope in God because He loves You.

I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. (Lamentations 3:20-23)

Even if you are in the midst of a difficult time or are grieving a great loss , there is still reason for hope. Everything around you may feel like it’s falling apart. Everything inside of you may feel like it’s falling apart. But God’s love and mercy will never fail you.

Ask God to give you hope because of His never-ending love. Ask Him to fill you with His peace that is more powerful than all of the hard things in your life. Every day is a new opportunity to receive God’s mercy and love.

17. God is loving. He does not want to harm you but to show you compassion.

Though He brings grief, He also shows compassion because of the greatness of His unfailing love. For He does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow. (Lamentations 3:32-33)

When you experience difficult things or see suffering in the world, you may be tempted to think God dislikes you or that He enjoys seeing some people suffer. This is not true. God created a beautiful, perfect world, but people brought imperfection into it.

God is hurt when He sees how much people suffer. He has allowed people to make a mess of the world for a period of time, but He will not leave it that way forever. God will make things right again because He is compassionate and loving.

Part VI: God’s Love for Us Should Inspire Us to Love Others →

18. jesus’ love is an example of what it means to sacrifice and serve others out of love..

Jesus knew that the Father had given Him authority over everything and that He had come from God and would return to God. So He got up from the table, took off His robe, wrapped a towel around His waist, and poured water into a basin. Then He began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel He had around Him. ... “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” (John 13:3-5, 34)

On His last night with His disciples before He was crucified, Jesus emphasized loving others. He demonstrated what loving others looks like by washing His disciples’ feet.

Washing someone’s dirty feet may seem like a gross enough task today, but during that day, people wore sandals and walked most places. So their feet were much, much dirtier. Washing feet was usually the job of a lowly servant.

Later, one of Jesus’ final commands to His disciples was to love each other as He had loved them.

This passage begins by telling us Jesus knew He had all of God’s authority and power and would soon return to God in heaven. But He showed His disciples He loved them by stepping down from His position of power to take on the role of a lowly servant.

Loving others often requires being willing to step down from your position of power and serve.

19. God is love, so our love for others points them to Him.

God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love — not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us.” (1 John 4:9-12)

When we love each other, it gives people a glimpse of God because God is love . It can be difficult for people to understand God, but when we love others in His name, they experience a taste of His love.

Sadly, sometimes Christians are known more for judgment than for love. If you want to help other people know who God is, you can share the message of God’s love and then help them experience it through your love for them.

20. Because God loves us so much, His love should overflow from us into others.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23)

God’s love should not stop with Him loving you, it should overflow into the lives of the people around you. This is the natural result of constantly experiencing God’s loving presence in the form of the Holy Spirit .

When you allow God’s love to grow in you, it will be like a plant that produces fruit. One of the fruits of God’s love is your increasing inclination and ability to love others. His Spirit also allows you to love with a love greater than you could have on your own.

Don’t keep the love of God to yourself; allow Him to use you to show His love to others.

Part VII: Next Steps →

The beauty of God’s love is that He offers it freely. He wants to have a loving relationship with you forever.

Do you truly believe that God loves you as much as the Bible says He does?

If not, think of a way to remind yourself of God’s love for you throughout the day. Write your favorite verses about God’s love on sticky notes and stick them on your bathroom mirror or around your workspace. Memorize a few of these verses and repeat them to yourself when you are feeling far from God.

If you believe that God loves you, how does it influence the way you live? Do you believe your Father, who loves you dearly, is the most powerful force in the universe? What would look different in your life if you lived in light of this truth?

Are you allowing God to use you to show His love to others?

Who is one person in your life whom you can show God’s love to today?

Send a message of encouragement to someone you know is having a difficult time.

Think of a small act of kindness you can do for someone who is struggling.

Stop by to just be with them and listen.

Bring them something special, like coffee or flowers.

Drop off dinner or have it delivered.

If they have kids, offer to watch them for a couple hours.

Share your favorite verse or insight about God’s love on social media to let people know that God loves them.
