Legendary Journeys and Adventures

The heart of Yellowstone beats with nature's gems... furred, feathered, smoldering and sculpted... in moving tableaus wild and wondrous.

Four nights inside yellowstone.

Nights 3, 4, 5 and 6

Spend four nights at two lodges inside Yellowstone National Park

Named among "50 Tours of a Lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler magazine, our small group "Yellowstone & the Tetons: American Safari" defines adventure in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, and features four nights at two inside-the-park properties in Yellowstone National Park – two at Old Faithful Snow Lodge, recognized with the Cody Award for Western Design as a significant modern example of "classic" new-style architecture within the park; and two at the historic, recently renovated Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabins.

Snake River rafting trip

Enjoy a whitewater rafting adventure on the snake river.

Legend has it that the Snake River got its name by mistake, when a Shoshone hand sign for "fish" was misinterpreted as "snake," and the name stuck. Whatever you call it, it's a pretty awesome river – as you'll find out for yourself when you head out on a whitewater rafting adventure along the Snake's route through the magnificent Tetons.

Bicycling in the Tetons

Go bicycling in grand teton national park.

Trade in your hiking boots (temporarily) for a bicycle as you join our guide for a leisurely ride on the new Teton Mountain Trail, travelling along the scenic sagebrush of Antelope Flats, with the majestic Tetons just beyond – keeping an eye out for bison, pronghorn and, naturally, antelope as you marvel at the grandeur around you.

Expert talks in Yellowstone

Days 4 and 6

Enjoy talks by a park historian and a wildlife photographer in Yellowstone

Our exclusive partnership with award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan has created exclusive on-tour film vignettes, Ken Burns Events, and Crafted by Tauck and Ken Burns journeys including "Yellowstone & the Tetons: American Safari." The many exclusive touches to these specially created tours include access to Ken and Dayton's extensive network of local experts to maximize your travel experience in the National Parks in ways that add layers of meaning and appreciation… like talks by a national parks historian at your lodge and a wildlife photographer in his log cabin!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Yellowstone & The Tetons: American Safari begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries , you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $349  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPDOM .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required. Most important are lightweight walking shoes with ankle support. Be sure to bring shorts and sneakers for River rafting, walking, hiking and long pants for horse back riding.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room in all of the hotels. Laundry services are also available for a fee at all the hotels.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

The national park lodges do not have televisions or Internet hook-ups, so bring along a good book to read!

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater, fleece or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • A small flashlight
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Shoes that will get wet for the raft trip (flip flops are not recommended)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

To enjoy this tour, you should be in reasonably good health. Our journeys are active adventures which may include considerable walking on uneven terrain, involve stairs and steep inclines, touring at high elevations and visiting remote areas in newly developing ecotourism destinations, frequently in warm weather. It is important that you have sturdy, comfortable and worn-in walking shoes. Hiking boots are recommended for the hiking portions of this tour. We will also be bicycling, rafting and wildlife viewing, so shoes with a heel, water shoes, long pants as well as shorts and hats may be of use.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Snake River, the journey is roughly 2 hours and requires stepping in and out of an inflatable raft
  • A bicycle excursion along mostly flat paved roads that is 90mins in length.

This tour spends two nights at an altitude of 6,800 feet at Jackson Lake Lodge and four nights at 7,800 feet in Yellowstone National Park. Those with heart conditions or lung ailments should consult their physician before traveling. It is important to drink plenty of water and avoid any strenuous exercise throughout all high altitude travel. If you have any concerns about the altitude we urge you to speak with your physician before your departure.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Certain activities on the tour will require a liability waiver signature before participation. This liability waiver will include an assumption of risk, release and indemnification by you.

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the mini coaches.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

All park accommodations are non-smoking.

Weather and Travel Gear

Spring & Fall: Daytime temperatures range from the 30s to the 60s (0 to 20C) with overnight lows in the teens to single digits (-5 to -20C). Snow is common in the Spring and Fall with regular accumulations of 12" in a 24 hour period. At any time of year, be prepared for sudden changes. Unpredictability, more than anything else, characterizes Yellowstone's weather. Always be equipped with a wide range of clothing options. Be sure to bring a warm jacket and rain gear even in the summer.

Summer: Daytime temperatures are often in the 70s (25C) and occasionally in the 80s (30C) in lower elevations. Nights are usually cool and temperatures may drop below freezing at higher elevations. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoons.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

TRAVEL GEAR

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at { necessarygear.com } as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Why Choose Our Guided Small-Group Adventure?

  • Don't Go It Alone—Let Us Take the Hassle Out! When you travel on your own, you spend a lot of time researching, planning, asking questions, competing for reservations, or driving around trying to figure out where to go and what to do. As a result, you lose precious time and miss the secret spots known only to locals. We’ve taken out the legwork and guesswork: because we’ve already researched and tested everything, and we coordinate reservations far in advance, you'll experience much more than most people can accomplish on their own.
  • Small Groups Make a BIG Difference In contrast to motorcoach tours, our small groups are limited to  just seven guests per private safari vehicle, and only six on photo tours!  With a maximum of 13 guests (in two vehicles) per departure—just 12 on photo tours—plus two NHA Expedition Leaders and a support staff member, we offer a matchless guide-to-guest ratio and a far more intimate nature adventure. We can move more quickly to areas where wildlife has recently been spotted and access roads and places buses can't reach.
  • "Hidden" Wildlife Enclaves, Private Experiences & Fewer Crowds Our itinerary features out-of-the-way corners of Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks that most visitors miss. With in-depth knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, we take you to lesser-known areas where wildlife viewing is better and crowds are fewer. Over the years we’ve developed relationships with a range of interesting locals, and you'll get personalized experiences you wouldn’t have access to on your own, such as a home visit with a famous local wildlife photographer.
  • Expert Naturalist Guides Add Immeasurably to Your Experience Our Expedition Leaders are professional naturalists and biologists who know this region like few others. Many guide and teach here year-round, all have in-depth knowledge of the places we visit, resident wildlife behavior, and where and when to be in particular places to see animals. Our guides are the most senior in the region, called on to train other local guides.  We can't emphasize enough how much difference this expertise makes to your overall experience. They are also in constant communication with local wolf researchers, providing our groups the most up-to-date knowledge of wolf locations and activity. See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Special Photo Departures with Expert Photography Coaching On our photo safaris, we often begin the day earlier and end later, to capitalize on the best light—slowing down a bit to take advantage of photo opportunities as they arise. And we make the most of autumn's brilliant colors with special fall foliage photo departures, too. Our guides on these trips are not only professional naturalists but gifted photography instructors, too.
  • Personalized Encounters with a Local Naturalist Photographer Exclusively for Nat Hab guests, we have arranged a private home and gallery visit with Dan Hartman, one of Yellowstone's most famous wildlife photographers, whose work has been featured in National Geographic  and other notable outlets. His wolf images are particularly renowned, and he is an important Yellowstone naturalist in his own right. Photo safaris also spend a day in the field with Dan, gaining insight and tips from this local pro.
  • Exclusive Nat Hab Safari Trucks—Pop-Top Roofs Enhance Viewing A far cry from the typical buses or vans other companies use, Nat Hab has crafted new Mercedes Sprinters into specialty North American Safari Trucks . Featuring luxury bucket seats, USB chargers, expansive side windows and a pop-top roof offering 360° views on the landscape, these impressive vehicles provide a superlative wildlife viewing experience, not to mention exceptional comfort. Every guest has a window seat and plenty of room for camera equipment and other gear. These exclusive vehicles make a big difference!
  • A Diversity of Seasons So You Can Choose Your Preference No matter when you visit Yellowstone Country, you are in for an uplifting nature display. In spring, crowds are fewer, the landscape is bright green with the peaks still blanketed by snow, and babies abound: bear cubs, bison calves, moose calves, fawns and wolf pups.  Bears are especially active searching for food after hibernation, and cooler temperatures tend to mean more wildlife activity. In high summer, wildflowers are in full bloom and animals are still very active. Long days allow us to rise early and linger late, maximizing time for the best wildlife viewing when visitors have left the park or aren't yet out and about for the day. Fall is splendid here, with autumn’s palette of golden aspen and willow contrasting against brilliant blue skies and providing a superb backdrop for wildlife photos. Crowds are fewer again, too, as we listen for bugling elk and look for rotund bears, fattening up before winter.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Yellowstone Adventure With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee, stating clearly that we will meet the lofty expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. We think this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

  • TFW21 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Winter Wildlife Safari with Nate A group of 5 of us went on a Private Yellowstone Winter Wildlife Safari in early January 2024. We had one teenager with us. First off I have been to Yellowstone many times and have hiked portions of it including the Backcountry. Nate was our Guide, he was excellent. Nate has a tremendous knowledge of the ecosystem at Yellowstone NP and he has a passion for the Park. Nate is also a Wildlife Artist. Our Safari was composed specifically for us as Nate questioned all of us on our expectations and our wants while in Yellowstone. Nate insured we always were comfortable, had something to eat/drink or respond to any questions that we may have had. This was an excellent experience, as a person who has seen Yellowstone many times, seeing it in Winter is a different and worthwhile experience. Nate was able to help us see Bison, Bald Eagles, Red Fox, Grey Wolves & a Bull Moose in the wild. I would strongly suggest this Yellowstone Winter Wildlife Safari Tour and If you are fortunate enough to have Nate as your Guide, you are in for a treat! Read more Written January 14, 2024

Picture perfect photo safari.

From early morning bison and elk whose breath condenses on the cool air, to the sun shining through the vapor clouds above thermal streams, to the rainbow only visible for a few minutes each day, and only from a single vantage point, in the mists of the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park is a paradise for shutterbugs. Your host, a driver-guide who is also a professional photographer, will tailor the tour to the interests, skill levels, and equipment of the group to create a day of memorable photographs for all.

One of our safaris originates from Old Faithful Inn, and takes in thermal areas and wildlife north of Old Faithful Village; the other departs Lake Yellowstone Hotel to visit wildlife-rich Hayden Valley and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (always hoping for a clear morning that may reveal that rare rainbow, but no guarantees on the weather!).

For both, the goal of this five-hour tour, intriguing photographic opportunities coupled with (for those who’d like it) instruction on how to better use your camera, means a limited number of in-depth stops will be the order of the day. For a fantastic outing for you and your camera, set your ISO for the Picture Perfect Photo Safari! ”

A Pronghorn Buck Is One Example of Yellowstone Wildlife You Might See On A Safari Tour In Yellowstone National Park in Winter

Destination

While winter may bring cold temperatures, snowy days and a resounding stillness to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, it is also undoubtedly one of the most exciting seasons to go on a wildlife safari.

Yellowstone in winter is an extreme, exclusive place. Of the 300 miles of road in the Park, only 50 miles are open to regular vehicles between the months of November to April. A private, full-day winter tour with Yellowstone Safari Co. focuses on this region, the spectacular Northern Range between Mammoth Hot Springs and Cooke City Montana, where some of the best wildlife viewing in North America can be found.

The winter season is arguably the best time for watching the most remarkable of apex predators, the gray wolf. Our naturalists follow wolf pack movements throughout the year and know the best places for an opportunity to observe them in the wild. Oftentimes wolves stay far from people, meaning the use of optics is tantamount to an incredible “close-up” experience. Viewing a pack of wolves hunt, play, feed and fight can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that few people ever imagine or forget! The gray wolves in Yellowstone also contribute to the greater story of conservation in the west, and have become a trademark for the National Park and public lands in this region.

Your exact route and itinerary will be determined by your interests, current wildlife sightings, and current weather and road conditions.  Our guides are all highly experienced, with thousands of hours in the field, and will expertly tailor your safari to you and your group.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is a region steeped in history and wildness, where nature thrives as it did prior to human settlement. On your safari you will have an opportunity to view hundreds if not thousands of large mammals including massive herds of bison and elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Canines such as coyotes and foxes are possible, as are birds of prey such as golden and bald eagles, hawks and falcons. With the use of our high-quality binoculars and spotting scopes you might be fortunate enough to view all the hallmarks of Rocky Mountain West, surrounded by the immense and beautiful landscape all around you.

Our naturalist guides are highly experienced and enthusiastic and will tailor each trip for guests needs and desires. Whether you are hoping for a glimpse of a wolf, a walk to a frozen waterfall, or time wandering the otherworldly thermal cascades at Mammoth, we are happy to guide you on your journey, all the while providing invaluable interpretation and storytelling. Throughout the day we will provide snacks, hot beverages, a satisfying picnic lunch and every amenity you may need to stay warm and comfortable during your day of adventure.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed our tour! We did the full day Winter Safari Tour through north Yellowstone and it was amazing! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the park and wildlife and answered all of our questions! We saw as much of the sites as we could that was open to cars during winter and got to see a lot of the wildlife! It was phenomenal! I would definitely love to go back and visit other areas of Yellowstone.

Is winter a good time to visit Yellowstone National Park?

Yes!  Even if you’ve previously visited Yellowstone National Park in the summer months, winter offers a completely different experience.  Most of the park is closed to vehicles during the winter months but we are able to access the park through the north entrance and we travel along the northern region, open to vehicles and home to diverse wintering wildlife.  Winter is a fantastic time to visit Yellowstone, and you’ll want to plan accordingly and come prepared for winter conditions so that the trip is enjoyable for you.

What animals can I see in Yellowstone in the winter?

While wolves are the main winter attraction in Yellowstone National Park during the winter, the area is home to a number of creatures, both big and small.  You may see a herd of bison, elk or mule deer or you may spot bighorn sheep or mountain goats.  Canids, like coyote and fox are seen during the winter as well as birds of prey, like eagles and hawks.

How can I see Yellowstone wildlife in the winter?

The winter months can be harsh, especially on wildlife.  We keep our distance so we don’t stress the animals.  Your guide will bring binoculars for your use as well as a spotting scope to safely view wildlife in its natural habitat.  Guides generally know where to look to find wintering wildlife so a guided tour offers the best opportunities at seeing wildlife in the National Park.  For the ultimate chance at spotting wildlife, we recommend opting for a multi-day tour.  This gives you time over the course of several days to track and spot wildlife.

When is it the coldest in Yellowstone?

It can start snowing in Yellowstone as early as September, but the winter season typically begins in November and continues through March, with some late snowstorms in April. January is typically the coldest month, with average temps ranging from 1F to 25F daily (-3C to -18C), but temperatures can always fluctuate wildly in a day, even in the summer months. It’s important to check the forecast and always be prepared for changing conditions.

Does Yellowstone get a lot of snow in the winter?

Yes! Compared to a lot of other National Parks, Yellowstone is a snowy place in the winter time. Snow can start falling in high elevations at the end of the summer season (September) and winter really settles in around November. It will keep snowing, sometimes heavily, into March and even April. An occasional snowstorm is not uncommon in May, or even June, but that snow is usually melted as soon as the sun comes back out. The interior of Yellowstone National Park is effectively snowed in from November through April, the only vehicles allowed being over-snow vehicles. The Lamar Valley remains open via one road from the north entrance (Gardiner, MT) through to Cooke City, MT. This is our winter route and it offers spectacular wolf watching, snowy landscapes and opportunities for exploring the area by snowshoe.

What do others say about this tour?

5 Stars My husband and I took our kids (11 and 13) on the one day wolf safari. It was one of the best outings we have ever had! Our guide had an incredible eye for spotting animals while driving. He would immediately find a place to stop and set up spotting scopes so that we had amazing views of the wildlife. We saw a pack of 11 wolves frolicking after a meal and were close enough to be able to hear the pack howl. We also saw big horn sheep, elk, pronghorn antelope, 3 foxes, coyotes and were closer to a bison than I would have imagined possible. He was a fount of knowledge and the kids have not stopped talking about all of the cool things we learned about the wildlife and geography of Yellowstone. He brought warm clothes (as ski gear doesn’t keep you warm enough when standing outside the car and watching wolves for 45 minutes), tasty snacks and a yummy lunch. Yellowstone is baseline staggeringly beautiful but we would never have been able to appreciate and see the wildlife close up without Yellowstone Safari . Katherine W.

5 Stars This was my favorite part of a sister trip to Big Sky Country! It’s hard to explain just how much I enjoyed this. I love nature, especially as I get older, and our guide made it that much more fun. He is AWESOME POSSUM. We met him in downtown Bozeman where he picked us up in a white SUV. We drove 1.5 hours to Yellowstone and man, during that drive down, he certainly filled it with all kinds of information! Never a dull moment, and trust me – I’M NOT A MORNING PERSON! Alas, he was able to point out so much wildlife and history before we even reached the gates of the park. He had so much enthusiasm, genuine, that it elevated my experience, as well as my sister’s, so very much. With the beauty of Yellowstone , you really can’t go wrong. Having someone like him by your side… takes it to another level that will make this unforgettable! S. C.

5 Stars AMAZING!!! My husband and I went on a day wildlife safari and we could not have been more impressed. Our guide impressed us beyond anything we expected. He was so knowledgeable about everything we saw. We can’t wait to go back and absolutely plan on booking again. Autumn K.

This winter, explore the beauty of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem that extends beyond the reach of Jackson Hole.  Immerse yourself in the natural world where you not only see the wild beauty, but you’ll feel the invigorating frosty air fill your lungs and you’ll smell the piney incense of subalpine firs.  On top of enjoying a voyage through some of the most beautiful landscapes the west has to offer, you will view wildlife track and sign as well as be on the lookout for a variety of amazing animals native to Yellowstone National Park, and you’ll learn about their unique ecological roles in the region.

  • Winter Access to Yellowstone National Park
  • Family-Friendly Snowshoe Options
  • Wilderness, Wildlife, & Winter Solitude

Choose a low-impact adventure – great for families, kids, beginners, novices, or anyone wanting an easy pace.  We will travel 2.5 hrs, by vehicle, through eastern Idaho before accessing Yellowstone National Park through the West Entrance.  We’ll spend the morning on snowshoes before returning to West Yellowstone for a late lunch.  After lunch, we’ll head to the Wolf and Grizzly Discovery Center where you will experience the majesty of grizzly bears, gray wolves, river otters, and more before heading back to Jackson Hole.

If you would like a more rigorous experience, we can extend our time in the field and explore more by snowshoe.

This tour is van-based with the majority of time spent in the field on snowshoes.  Please come prepared for a variety of conditions and terrain.

Jackson Hole is an amazing place to visit during the winter.  Scenery and wildlife are abundant, as well as – to the pleasure of the avid skier- snow.  While most venture into this picturesque valley between the months of December through March with the plans of hitting the world-class slopes at a ski resort, there is so much more the region has to offer.  There is the iconic Grand Teton National Park to explore, as well as the National Elk Refuge which abuts the northern edge of the town of Jackson, WY.  But why limit your visit to the geographic valley alone?  Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris wants to help you expand your boundaries with a full-day snowshoeing and wildlife adventure!  This tour will provide you with snowshoes, trekking poles, and a highly experienced guide who will lead you through the wonders of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during winter.

West Yellowstone Snowshoe & Wildlife Adventure

Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris will pick you up at your place of lodging in the morning (around Jackson, Teton Village, WY or Victor or Driggs, ID) and begin the 2.5-hour scenic drive from Jackson to West Yellowstone.  The first leg of our journey takes us over the Teton Pass which lies just West of Jackson, WY.  This route will take you to an elevation of 8,432 ft above sea level, and at the summit allows observers to witness the sprawling valley below, the rolling foothills and alpine peaks of the Gros Ventre Mountain Range, and the Snake River winding below.  There will be hillsides laden with endless snow-flocked evergreens to admire, along with the potential to spot moose and deer along the drive into Idaho.  Passing through Victor and Driggs, ID provides the opportunity to see the wonderful western face of the Teton Range.  Beyond that is Island Park, ID (fun fact: is home to the longest main street in America) where evidence of past volcanism originating from the Yellowstone hotspot begins to reveal itself.

Upon arriving in West Yellowstone, MT there won’t be much farther to go before arriving at the trailhead to start the wintry adventure into Yellowstone National Park.  The snowshoes Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris will provide aid in keeping you from sinking too deep into the snow when trekking over embankments that could be multiple feet in depth.  This enables multiple miles of travel into this winter wonderland where you are immersed in the peaceful solitude of Yellowstone.  Be prepared to learn about the complexities of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the history of preservation within the park, and a chance to spot elusive wildlife like bobcats, American martens, ermine, snowshoe hares, and a wonderful variety of songbirds.  Even if wildlife is not actively tromping around the trail, the snowy landscape is a perfect canvas upon which tracks and signs are apparent.  Your expert guide will be eagerly seeking out such evidence of wildlife activity and delighted to interpret all that might be spotted along the journey.

The rest of the afternoon will be dedicated to observing some of the most elusive wildlife in this ecosystem.  Winter might not be the season to expect to see Grizzly bears in Yellowstone, but the Wolf and Grizzly Discovery Center makes the impossible happen!  The discovery center hosts multiple grizzly bears (one is actually an Alaskan Coastal Grizzly) which were brought to the establishment as nuisance or orphaned bears that would have otherwise been euthanized.  These bears are active year-round being fed and roaming around their enclosure on a daily basis.  The gray wolf is another tantalizing native Yellowstone species that can be observed at the discovery center.  Two different wolf packs live at this educational facility, they will often be lounging, playing, and feeding around their enclosures- providing ample opportunities to observe these animals interacting on a nearby basis.  A recent addition to the Wolf and Grizzly Discovery Center is the River Otter exhibit.  River otters can be challenging to find in the wilderness of Yellowstone but are always captivating to watch due to their playful antics.  Other animals that can be seen at the center include birds of prey, fish, and a selection of native amphibian and reptilian species.

Join one of our expert guides and let Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris lead you through a one-of-a-kind educational and extraordinary experience in Yellowstone National Park!

Can I still participate in a Yellowstone Snowshoe Tour if I have never snowshoed before?

Snowshoeing is an experience that is for everyone.  But, even for those not familiar with snow related activities, putting on a pair of snowshoes to trek through a winter wonderland is fundamentally simple.  One of the greatest challenges is the physical aspect.  With the added weight of snowshoes on your feet, the quads and hip flexors are exposed to a greater strain than usual.  Then there is the coordination; snowshoes are wider than any normal shoe, resembling baskets attached to your winter boots.  This will require you to take broader steps as to not trip on your own shoes.  Fortunately, slipping and sliding is typically not a concern.  Unlike skis, which are built to slide along any downhill terrain, snowshoes are equipped with crampons (metal spikes on the bottom of the shoe) which increase traction in even the iciest conditions.  Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris snowshoe trips are private adventures, which means you will have plenty of one on one time with your guide to grasp the snowshoeing process and go at your own pace without feeling rushed.  With a Wilderness First Aid certification, Avalanche Awareness Training and first hand experience with snowshoeing, your guide will be prepared to make this experience enjoyable while minimizing risk, even if you are a beginner.

What should we wear for snowshoeing in Yellowstone National Park?

Snowshoeing, regardless of the intensity, often results in the body heating up dramatically while moving even in below freezing conditions, and rapid cooling when stopping for a break (or lunch in the case of the longer trek from the south entrance of Yellowstone).  This is why layers are vital when participating in any outdoor recreation in the winters of the northwest.  While exerting yourself, it is perfect to be able to strip down to a thin synthetic or wool blend top layer that will provide a light layer of protection from the chill.  Cotton clothing is not recommended as it does not keep you warm once it is damp from sweat or snow.  When stationary, a warm fleece layer and/or puffy insulated jacket is heavenly to stay warm as your body cools down from exerting itself.  No matter the distance traveled, always pack a waterproof jacket and pair of pants.  This could be a jacket worn for skiing, or simply a rain coat as long as the proper insulating layers are worn underneath it.  Look for one with a hood so if it’s a blizzard-y day you can keep snow off your head.  Snow pants (or ski pants) are one of the best shell layers for snowshoeing.  Usually snow pants are insulated, and it’s always a good idea to wear a base layer of long underwear that is a synthetic or wool blend.  If looking to invest in your first pair of snow pants, consider a pair with vents that can be unzipped in order to allow for your legs to cool off if you do get overheated.  Gaiters are something to consider if you’re worried about snow getting into your shoes, which would result in cold, wet feet and discomfort.  Speaking of shoes, waterproof and insulated is essential.  Regardless of the brand and fit that is best for you, boots that go above the ankle are usually best.  This helps keep the snow out!  Other accessories to consider are a pair of waterproof, insulated gloves; a warm hat (that you might end up removing if you get too warm!) and a scarf or neck gaiter to keep wind and snow off your neck and face.  Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris will provide lunch and snacks for your excursion, but you should bring plenty of water as well as any preferred snacks.  32oz should be enough fluids for the shorter snowshoe trip from West Yellowstone, but for the longer trek via the South Entrance do not hesitate to pack as much as 64oz to be safe.

What part of Yellowstone National Park will we see?

Yellowstone National Park has five different entrances total, and one of the closest ones to Jackson Hole is the West Entrance.

The West Entrance trail system offers snowshoeing opportunities of shorter, less strenuous distances.  One option takes you through the west gate and out to the embankments of the Madison River.  The secondary option will not take you through a traditional entrance station, instead you will start from the Bighorn Pass Trail in which immediately, the rushing waters of the Gallatin River will be there to greet you.  Both are relatively level out-and-back trails which will provide beautiful views of the Gallatin Mountains and snow flocked forests.

Will we see winter wildlife in Yellowstone National Park?

Aside from experiencing unadulterated wilderness and immersing oneself in the peace and beauty of the natural world, Yellowstone National Park also offers the opportunity to observe a wonderful spectrum of wildlife.  Might wildlife sightings be expected on a snowshoeing excursion?  This is always a possibility!  Even in the depths of winter a variety of species remain active.  Amongst forested terrain the elusive ermine, pine marten, bobcat, fox and even the incredible gray wolf could be roaming, typically on the search for food to sustain themselves during this arduous season.  Near waterways like the Gallatin, Madison and Snake Rivers there is a chance to spot river otters, muskrats, beavers and even moose!  Our experienced guides will also be able to point out some of the smaller, feathered wildlife species that remain active year round.  This could include songbirds such as the lovely waxwings, pine siskins, finches, American dippers and shrikes, but also larger avians like bald eagles and owls.  Even if animals are not actively being seen, their tracks and signs should still be apparent, especially as they move through an impressionable substrate like snow!

Do I need to be in good physical condition to snowshoe on this tour?

Most snow oriented activities provide a satisfying degree of physical challenge.  When it comes to snowshoeing, if the trails are packed down and there hasn’t been much snowfall recently, the trek is usually not much more difficult than a moderately strenuous hike.  Cutting through deeper snowbanks, for which you will luckily have a guide to break the trail, is where things can get more taxing for the quads and hip flexors.

If longer, strenuous hikes are not your thing, and you would rather enjoy a shorter, more leisurely trip, or you have children, then we’ll spend some time in the field, and then explore the Grizzly Wolf and Discovery Center.  This route overall provides the option of going no more than 2 miles round trip before returning to the vehicle and enjoying the rest of the afternoon in West Yellowstone, MT before heading back to Jackson Hole.

If you’ve got a penchant for adventure, regularly engage in endurance sports, and the idea of a full day of snowshoeing into the park sounds like your cup of tea, then consider adding some time in the field for a longer day on snowshoes.  You can skip the discover center and spend the day in the great outdoors.

Yellowstone is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful National Parks in the country. With unparalleled views of geysers, hot springs and meadowlands, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to visit this gorgeous National Park. While most tourists visit Yellowstone in the summer, it’s the wintertime where the stillness, amazement and beauty of nature really shines.

5 Winter Photography Tips: Dealing with Three Exposures

December 28, 2016.

Winter is a time of paradoxes and extremes; landscapes covered in clean white snow are most beautiful; temperatures range from above freezing to well below zero, animals are wearing their finest winter furs, some animals are losing their adornments (antlers) and many scenes you will have alone as most folks are nestled comfortably in front of the fireplace. Capturing this winter beauty is an exercise of extremes. We must deal with three primary exposures; skin, camera and photographic.
