Romulons should have Dyson sphere (at least at Romulus and Remus). Their ship tech is based on creating black holes which will give a ship a reactor core with a life of a handful of years BUT it’s just like an inefficient battery because it takes way more energy to initially create it then it will give off over its life BUT it’s portable. Sure beats light sails if your depending on home system energy and way more flexible too. This was their tech wheelhouse, and was their interstellar travel energy source instead of antimatter. It makes total sense for them to have harnessed the majority of their native suns energy to create reactor cores wherever they needed a portable energy that couldn’t tap into the system wide grid.

A few questions… 1) Why are there several Indus VIII on the map?, 2) I do not see the First Federation on this map — they should be near the Ferengi!, 3) Where is the Kelvin planet? Vulcan is “Supposed” to be “A little over sixteen” light years from earth. Yet the map has it at around 1000. That’s one of my biggest gripes about Star Trek (I absolutely love Star Trek, don’t get me wrong). Distances and travel times are so inconsistent and unrealistic based on the documented scales, maps, etc.

I love this map, especially how you have the Hydran Kingdom, the Lyran Star Empire and the Kzinti Hegemony are listed (where is the Interstellar Concordium?). I have one small nit-pick to make and that is you have two systems named “Nelvana III”. They’re both in the upspin Beta quadrant but one is in the Romulan Neutral Zone and the other is further upspin and outward (left). I think that you might consider making most of the empty space that is coreward of Klingon and Romulan space into the ISC. They were referred to as being a Galactic Superpower residing on the far side of both those Empires (so, coreward).

I dont understand how this can be called a map of the star trek galaxy when there isnt even a spot or indication of where earth is. Who makes a map without earth when you have a series where its location is based on earth. In the series they refer to Earth as Earth. Yet the closes thing to it is on the map is Volcan. Y not add Earth as well? If there is an alternative name how come it’s never mentioned in the shows and a secret for fans?

Milky Way Galaxy Quadrants

A map of the Milky Way's four primary quadrants

In stellar cartography , a quadrant is a major region of space encompassing a portion of a galaxy .

  • 1 Major quadrants
  • 2 Minor quadrants
  • 3.1 Background information
  • 3.2 External link

Major quadrants [ ]

The Milky Way Galaxy was commonly divided into four equally sized, cubic quadrants, defined by one meridian passing through the galactic core and a second one perpendicular to the first, that also passes through the galactic core. These four quadrants are referred to as the Alpha Quadrant , Beta Quadrant , Gamma Quadrant and Delta Quadrant . The United Federation of Planets and its neighboring powers, including the Klingon and Romulan Empires , were located in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, whereas the Borg Collective was located in the Delta Quadrant, and the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant. ( Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ; ENT : " Regeneration "; DS9 : " Rules of Acquisition ")

The division into four quadrants was used by United Earth and the Vulcans as early as the mid- 22nd century . ( ENT : " Shockwave, Part II ", " Regeneration ") In 2152 , after less than a year into the mission of Enterprise NX-01 , it was remarked by Vulcan Ambassador Soval , that he considered the ship to be a danger to the quadrant. By that time, Enterprise had involved itself in several armed conflicts and escalated conflict between the Vulcans and the Andorians . ( ENT : " Shockwave, Part II ") In 2153 , a subspace message sent by the Borg was determined to have a destination deep inside the Delta Quadrant. ( ENT : " Regeneration ")

In 2267 , when Lazarus and anti-Lazarus began changing places between each other, the universe ceased to exist for a brief moment. Captain Kirk noted in his log that the effects were felt throughout the entire quadrant of space. According to Commodore Barstow of Starfleet Command , the effect occurred in every quadrant of the Galaxy and far beyond. ( TOS : " The Alternative Factor ")

Minor quadrants [ ]

Smaller areas of space in the Galaxy were also referred to as quadrants during the 23rd and 24th centuries . These included: Quadrant 9 , Quadrant 448 , Quadrant 904 , the Morgana Quadrant , and the Drema Quadrant . ( TOS : " The Squire of Gothos ", " The Deadly Years "; TNG : " When The Bough Breaks ", " Heart of Glory ", " The Child ", " Where Silence Has Lease ", " Pen Pals ")

In 2266 , the Federation starship USS Enterprise conducted a survey of a quadrant in which the ship was located. According to Spock , there were no disturbances in this region. ( TOS : " Charlie X ")

In 2267 , following the loss of the Federation shuttlecraft Galileo in Murasaki 312 , the Enterprise shuttlecraft Columbus conducted a search of quadrant 779X by 534M. After reporting negative results, the shuttle was ordered by Captain Kirk to proceed to the next quadrant. ( TOS : " The Galileo Seven ") Later that year, negotiations to build a treaty port on Vendikar for the quadrant where the planet was located were conducted by Federation Ambassador Robert Fox . ( TOS : " A Taste of Armageddon ") During the same year, unit XY-75847 reported a fleet of Klingon ships in their sector , which was located in the same quadrant as the planet Organia . ( TOS : " Errand of Mercy ") Also during the same year, the planet Argelius II was of strategic importance as a space port to the Federation. At the time, it was the only port in that quadrant. ( TOS : " Wolf in the Fold ")

By 2268 , a particular quadrant of space, which included such notables as Deep Space Station K-7 , Donatu V , and Sherman's Planet , had been under dispute between the Federation and Klingon Empire since initial contact . In that year, Nilz Baris served as the Federation Undersecretary in Charge of Agricultural Affairs in said quadrant. ( TOS : " The Trouble with Tribbles ")

Also in 2268, during a transport mission to Babel , the Enterprise encountered an unidentified vessel that was shadowing the Enterprise 's route. Following contact with Starfleet , the Enterprise received acknowledgment which confirmed that there were no other authorized Federation vessels in the quadrant. ( TOS : " Journey to Babel ") During the same year, the Enterprise was exploring an outer quadrant of the Galaxy when it received a distress call from the planet Scalos . ( TOS : " Wink of an Eye ")

In 2269 , the Enterprise was ordered to respond to a botanical plague that was devastating a planet in the quadrant of the Galaxy where the ship was operating at the time. ( TOS : " The Cloud Minders ") In 2270 , the USS Huron was attacked by an Orion vessel in a particular quadrant. The Federation freighter 's dilithium shipment and the drug Strobolin were seized by the Orions . ( TAS : " The Pirates of Orion ") Later that year, when the Enterprise encountered Kukulkan's ship , it was noted that Starfleet listed no other authorized vessels in that particular quadrant. ( TAS : " How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth ")

In 2284 , when the Enterprise was ordered to Regula I by Starfleet Command, Admiral Kirk informed Starfleet Command that "all we had was a boatload of children ," but the craft was nevertheless diverted because it was the only ship in the quadrant. While en route to Regula , the Enterprise encountered the USS Reliant , under the command of Khan Noonien Singh . Once the two ships were in visual range of each other, it was noted that the Reliant had entered the same section of the quadrant as the Enterprise was currently in. ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

In 2364 , there was potential for Angel I having strategic importance to the Federation in its quadrant. ( TNG : " Angel One ") During that year, there were several events in other quadrants. For example, the planet Aldea was discovered in quadrant 1, mark 9-0, in the Epsilon Mynos system , by the USS Enterprise -D . ( TNG : " When The Bough Breaks ") In another event, the Enterprise -D received a communique from Starfleet reporting a battle in Quadrant 9, coordinates 070-mark-3, in the Klingon Neutral Zone . ( TNG : " Heart of Glory ") In a third event, the Enterprise -D picked up an unusual disturbance in a nearby quadrant, more specifically in Sector 63 . The disturbance was caused by the destruction of the USS Horatio . ( TNG : " Conspiracy ")

As of 2365 , the Morgana Quadrant was a section of the Galaxy that had not yet been visited by a manned Federation vessel. ( TNG : " Where Silence Has Lease ") Talos IV was located in the third quadrant of Vernal Galaxy . ( TOS : " The Menagerie, Part I ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

Quadrants and sectors have been used inconsistently in various Star Trek episodes and films . The term "quadrant" was first mentioned in TOS : " Charlie X ". In the script of " Court Martial ", internal sections of a Constitution -class starship were referred to in dialogue as "quadrants".

During The Original Series , the term "quadrant" was used rather freely, as was the term "sector". In some cases, a quadrant was an area outside the ship in visual range, such as in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and "When The Bough Breaks", or an area that could still be quickly explored with sublight shuttlecraft, such as those mentioned in "The Galileo Seven". In other cases, quadrants were composed of multiple sectors , such as the ones mentioned in "Errand of Mercy" and "Conspiracy". In "Heart of Glory", "Quadrant 9, coordinates 070-mark-3" was also shortened as "Quadrant 907-mark-3".

Additionally, Bjo Trimble explained, in the Star Trek Concordance , that a quadrant was "an area of space (a misnomer, as it should be called an octant)."

In the third season edition of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Writers' Technical Manual (p. 16), the authors wrote that a sector "was composed of four quadrants."

According to Larry Nemecek , it was not until the 1989 episode " The Price " that Mike Okuda and Rick Sternbach established the system of Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma quadrants dividing the galaxy. [1] A graphic depicting the galaxy, marking Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Borg space was later included in the Fourth Season Star Trek: The Next Generation Writers' Technical Manual (p. 20.) In productions moving forward the four quadrant system was used, including Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: Enterprise .

The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (1st ed., p. 11) explained the reason for splitting the Federation between Alpha and Beta Quadrants was to rationalize Kirk's line in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that the Enterprise was the only starship in the quadrant.

Furthermore, according to the Star Trek Encyclopedia , Earth marks the border between the Alpha Quadrant and the Beta Quadrant. The display graphic on a PADD in Star Trek: Insurrection would seem to confirm this. [2] [3] Dialogue in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , however, firmly establish that Earth is located on the Alpha Quadrant side of the border.

It is unclear how the names for each of the four major quadrants were assigned, as they do not seem to follow any discernible pattern, instead of in clockwise or counterclockwise order. Viewing the galaxy from a top-down map with the "Alpha" quadrant in the lower left, and going around clockwise, the order is Alpha, Gamma, Delta, Beta.

The Starfleet Corps of Engineers is responsible for creating and maintaining the maps and charts used by Starfleet vessels.

In summary, the quadrants in Star Trek are an important part of the Star Trek universe, and understanding them is essential for fans of the franchise.

The Alpha and Beta quadrants are the most explored and are home to many significant planets.

In contrast, the Gamma and Delta quadrants are less explored and are home to many alien species not commonly encountered in the Alpha and Beta quadrants.

Quadrants in Star Trek

The alpha quadrant.

The Alpha Quadrant is one of the four quadrants in the Milky Way Galaxy, as depicted in the Star Trek series.

It is home to many important planets, including Earth, Vulcan, and Bajor.

The United Federation of Planets is also located in this quadrant, making it a significant region in the Star Trek universe.

The USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain Kirk, frequently explored the Alpha Quadrant during its five-year mission.

The Enterprise NX-01, the first warp-five starship, also traveled extensively through this quadrant during the events of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Deep Space Nine, a space station located near the Bajoran wormhole, was a focal point of the Alpha Quadrant during the events of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

It served as a hub for trade, diplomacy, and conflict between the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire.

The Alpha Quadrant also features several important starbases, including Starbase 1 and Starbase 11.

These facilities provide support for Federation vessels and serve as strategic locations for defending against threats from the Klingons, the Romulans, and other hostile forces.

The Beta Quadrant

The Beta Quadrant is one of the four quadrants and is adjacent to the Alpha and Delta Quadrants.

It is home to various races, including the Vulcans and Klingons.

The Beta Quadrant has been featured in various Star Trek series and movies , including the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and Star Trek VI.

The USS Enterprise, Enterprise NX-01, and Deep Space Nine space station have all explored the Beta Quadrant.

Captain Kirk and his crew visited several planets in the Beta Quadrant, including Angel I, Talos IV, and Murasaki 312.

In The Next Generation, the Enterprise visited Vulcan and Andoria, both located in the Beta Quadrant.

The Beta Quadrant has been the setting for many important events in the Star Trek universe.

For example, the Romulan Star Empire is located in the Beta Quadrant, and the Dominion War between the Federation and the Dominion took place in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

The Gamma Quadrant

In the Star Trek universe, the Milky Way Galaxy is divided into four quadrants, and the Gamma Quadrant is one of them.

It is located adjacent to the Alpha Quadrant and the Delta Quadrant.

The Gamma Quadrant is home to various planets and civilizations, including the Dominion and the Breen Confederacy.

One of the most notable features of the Gamma Quadrant is the Bajoran Wormhole, which connects the Bajoran system in the Alpha Quadrant to the Idran system in the Gamma Quadrant.

This wormhole was discovered by the crew of Deep Space Nine, a space station located near the wormhole’s Alpha end.

The Dominion, a powerful empire that controls much of the Gamma Quadrant, is a major antagonist in the Star Trek universe.

The Dominion Space is vast, and it includes many different species that the Dominion has subjugated.

The Dominion War, which took place during the later seasons of Deep Space Nine, was fought between the Dominion and the Alpha Quadrant powers.

The Breen Confederacy is another major power in the Gamma Quadrant.

The Breen are known for their advanced technology and their mysterious appearance. They are also a key player in the Dominion War.

The Delta Quadrant

The Delta Quadrant is one of the four quadrants in the Milky Way Galaxy, adjacent to the Beta and Gamma Quadrants.

It is approximately 30,000 lightyears away from the United Federation of Planets.

The quadrant was prominently featured in the television series Star Trek: Voyager, as the USS Voyager was stranded there for seven years before returning to Earth.

The Delta Quadrant is home to many different species, including the Vidiians, Kazon, and Borg.

The Vidiians are a species that suffers from a disease called the Phage, which has ravaged their society and led them to resort to organ theft to survive.

The Kazon are a warrior race that is known for their conflicts with other species in the quadrant.

The Borg Collective, a powerful and dangerous cybernetic species, also has a significant presence in the Delta Quadrant.

In addition to the various species, the Delta Quadrant is home to many unique phenomena, such as the Caretaker’s Array, which was responsible for bringing Voyager to the quadrant.

The Borg also has a transwarp hub in the Delta Quadrant, allowing them to travel quickly throughout the galaxy.

Overall, the Delta Quadrant is a fascinating and dangerous region of space, full of unique species and phenomena that make it a popular destination for explorers and adventurers alike.

The cast of 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3

A Wannabe Blue Shirt Officer’s Guide to the Map of the Galaxy in ‘Star Trek’

Image of Benedetta Geddo

No matter the fictional universe— be it fantasy or sci-fi or somewhere in between (looking at you, space operas)—I’ve always found maps and cartography one of the most fascinating parts of worldbuilding. There’s something about actually seeing how an author imagines the setting of their story that immediately grounds it in the realm of possibility, and helps immerse viewers in the worlds in which these stories unfold.

Sure, it’s somehow easier when the map consists of a single continent, kingdom, or city on Earth or any other Earth-like location. Bringing the action up into space definitely makes everything a tad more complicated—and a whole lot more fascinating.

And now that the third season of Star Trek: Picard is in full swing , there’s no better time to refresh our collective memory on the “astrogeography” the crews of the USS Enterprise explore.

The USS Enterprise from 'Star Trek'

Star Trek and maps

The decades that have passed since Star Trek first premiered on television screens have made it possible for the saga to acquire beautifully complex and detailed lore on pretty much everything related to it—including the planets that make up the United Federation of Planets, and the powers that border it, like the infamous Klingon Empire.

There have actually been several maps made for Star Trek and its locations over the years, as it reads on The Map Room blog . “While original series canon assigned aliens to known nearby stars, and the shows occasionally used real locations, episode writers did not start with a map and generally did not take spatial relationships into consideration, which no doubt has made the belated mapping process a bit more challenging,” The Map Room blog continues, explaining how creating a comprehensive map of the Star Trek galaxy might be easier said than done.

Still, while none of the maps ever put to print or screen have ever been accepted as official canon, most of them have the major power players of the galaxy in more or less the same location. This means we can reasonably assume that this is the actual position in which they can be found in-universe.

The galaxy quadrants

Most of the action in the Star Trek canon takes place within our galaxy, the Milky Way, which has been divided into its famous four primary quadrants, each named after a letter in the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta.

The Alpha and Beta quadrants are the ones that are better known, even in-universe, and that house many of the major players we see throughout the various series—the United Federation of Planets chiefest of all. The Federation has a strong foothold in both quadrants, spanning Alpha and Beta from their shared border outwards.

According to Memory Alpha , the official Star Trek fan wiki, the Alpha quadrant contains two all-important planets that we all know very well: Earth, from which a good majority of the characters in Star Trek canon hail; and Vulcan, the homeworld of the Vulcans and especially of Spock. This quadrant also contains the Cardassian Union, the Ferengi Alliance, and the Breen Confederacy—among other smaller factions—whose representatives make an appearance in the canon, particularly in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Leonard Nimoy as Spock in 'Star Trek'

The Beta quadrant includes a couple of relatively smaller players like the Nyberrite Alliance and the Tholian Assembly, and then the major forces of the Romulan Star Empire and the infamous Klingon Empire—who both have their respective homeworlds, Romulus and Qo’noS, in this quadrant.

In contrast to the Alpha and Beta quadrants, the Gamma and Delta quadrants are considerably less well-known and less visited—which makes sense, considering the notable distances that separate them from the other areas of the galaxy, which would require years to bridge even at warp speed. Their reputation also isn’t as stellar as the areas in Federation space.

Still, they are of course mentioned time and again in the canon, as are the planets and people located within them. The Delta quadrant, for example, is the place of origin of the infamous Borg Collective, made up of the terrible Borg cyborgs.

What Is A Star Trek Quadrant?

star trek galaxy quadrants map

According to the Star Trek Quadrants map in the universe, the “galactic quadrants” are defined by an imaginary meridian that runs across our solar system, which is similar to the concept employed by astronomers.

Instead of going via the Sun as in astronomy, the perpendicular axis in the Star Trek map of quadrants goes through the galactic center.

Accordingly, Star Trek’s quadrant system is less geocentric than normal cartography. In addition, the Greek letters Alpha quadrant star trek, Beta, Gamma, and Delta are used to denote them in the Star Trek galaxy map rather than ordinals, as in the movies.

Star Trek Quadrants Explained

Background Of The Star Trek Quadrants?

Background Of The Star Trek Quadrants

To prepare for the invasion, trans-dimensional entities in the Expanse erected cloaked moons in the area . Their objective was to change the fabric of space in the region, making it hospitable for the Sphere Builders thousands of years ago.

Within a cluster of spheres 700 million kilometers in diameter , a portion of the Expanse has already been transformed into a boiling, organic-looking soup of subatomic particles. One or more spheres provide a command function for the network, which uses artificial intelligence.

As they are hidden, the actual number of spheres is unknown. Thousands of spheres, according to Trianon’s belief. They concluded that there were at least seventy-eight spheres on the star trek Galaxy map and that Degra was one of them.

The Expanse is referred to as the “Chosen Realm” by the Triannons, and their religion is based on the spheres and their mythology. After being stranded in 2037, the spaceship Enterprise from 2154 becomes a generational ship, devoted to fighting the Xindi menace that will emerge in 2150.’s future.’

In 2133, a party of Klingons ventures into the Expanse, only to return anatomically flipped (and still alive). Vulcan ships Seleya and Vaankara also try to investigate the area without success.

The crew of the Seleya, who had been exposed to Trillium-D, were found to be insane and consequently exterminated. Earth’s Starfleet ship Enterprise (NX-01) enters the Expanse in roughly June 2153 in an attempt to find the Xindi.

Later in the year, the Andorian ship Kumari joins the fleet. Reverting twisted space to its original shape and progressively dissolving the thermobaric cloud barrier, the Enterprise destroyed the network of Spheres on F ebruary 13, 2154.

As a result of this, the Expanse fades away into obscurity. Even though a scenario is given to Captain Jonathan Archer of the Enterprise in which the Expanse becomes a significant danger to the future United Federation of Planets , this certainly seems to be removed by the effective destruction of the Spheres. The galaxy is commonly divided into four quadrants, the Alpha Quadrant, the Beta Quadrant, the Gamma Quadrant, and the Delta Quadrant which can be seen if you watch Star Trek movies in order .

Star Trek: The Major Quadrants

According to common belief, the Milky Way Galaxy is divided into four equal-sized cubic quadrants, each defined by a meridian that passes through the galactic center and a second meridian that runs perpendicular to the first and goes through the galactic core.

The four quadrants of the equilateral triangle are known as the Alpha Quadrant, Beta Quadrant, Gamma Quadrant , and Delta Quadrant in mathematics.

The Alpha and Beta Quadrants , respectively, were dominated by alliances with the United Federation of Planets and its bordering powers, such as the Klingon and Romulan Empires.

The Borg Collective and the Dominion , on the other hand, were centered in the Delta and Gamma Quadrants, respectively.

The cosmos appeared to cease to exist for a brief while in the year 2267 when Lazarus and anti-Lazarus began switching places with one another.

Captain Kirk correctly noted in his report that the effects could be felt across the whole quadrant of space. According to Starfleet Command’s Commodore Barstow, afflicted areas covered every quadrant of the Galaxy and far beyond.

Alpha Quadrant

Alpha Quadrant

Except for Voyager and Deep Space Nine, the bulk of the franchise’s episodes take place inside the Alpha quadrant of Star Trek of the Galaxy. The planet Earth and a substantial section of the United Federation of Planets may be found here.

Because the planet Earth is situated inside this sector, the great majority of the journey conducted by starships seen in television shows and films takes place within this quadrant.

The Star Trek quadrants, on the other hand, are not bound to a certain area of the Galaxy. This seems to be among the most well-known spot on the face of the planet.

The planets of Trill, Tellar, and Betazed may all be found in this quadrant, along with our solar system, which makes up the whole quadrant.

Some claim that the Alpha sector contains remnants of the Romulan and Klingon civilizations , while others assume the opposite.

Beta Quadrant

Beta Quadrant

The Beta quadrant contains the rest of the Federation, much as the Alpha quadrant does. This implies that similar to Alpha, many television episodes and movies are set in this sector of the Galaxy.

The vast majority of the Romulan and Klingon empires are concentrated in this area. Beta is also home to Andoria, Risa, Vulcan, and Rigel. Certain publications claim that the Romulan and Klingon empires are entirely contained to a Beta quadrant and do not cross into the Alpha quadrant. These sources are incorrect.

Gamma Quadrant

Gamma Quadrant

The Star Trek Gamma quadrant was only partially explored until a wormhole was found in the Bajor area in the Alpha quadrant, which allowed for more extensive exploration.

It made it possible for individuals from Alpha to get to Gamma without having to spend years and years traveling.

The Federation was able to communicate with the Dominion via this wormhole, which was dubbed the Bajoran wormhole by the Federation.

This is the foe that we come up against in the television series Deep Space Nine . They are also in charge of the wormhole, which they created.

Delta Quadrant

Delta Quadrant

Most of the galaxy’s Delta Quadrant area has gone mostly undiscovered. Reliving their routes back to Earth took the crew of the USS Voyager years to complete.

Return to the beginning location by drawing a straight line from the Alpha and Beta quadrants.

Before the Borg landed in the Delta quadrant, this part of the Milky Way was widely considered to be the home of the Borg. Voyager discovered when returning to Earth that it’s also the homeland of the Kazon, Vidiians, Hirogen, and Species 8472.

Star Trek: The Minor Quadrants

During the 23rd and 24th centuries, smaller parts of space in the Galaxy were called quadrants, which were smaller sections of space inside the Galaxy. Among them were the Quadrant 9, Quadrant 448, Quadrant 904, the Morgana Quadrant, and the Drema Quadrant.

Quadrant 9 is a geographical location in space . This quadrant included a part of the Neutral Zone, which was positioned far enough from Ferengi Alliance territory and protected from attack. As of 2364, there has been no recent evidence of Romulan activity in the area.

Quadrant 448

Quadrant 448 was the site of a renegade comet that had just passed through Gamma Hydra IV in 2267 , according to Stardate 2267 .

Before the present standardization of the quadrant/sector paradigm of celestial cartography, the word “quadrant” refers to a region of the sky.

Quadrant 904

Quadrant 904 was in space in the Milky Way Galaxy, home to several planets. There was a star desert to be found in this area. According to the most recent known data, when the USS Enterprise was first seized by the planet Gothos in this position is 2267, the ship was eight days distant from the planet Beta VI at warp factor three, and Earth was nine hundred light-years away. The Quadrant 904 Central Station served as an embarkation point and a destination for commercial transportation in 2328.

Morgana Quadrant

As per MemoryAlpha , in space, the Morgana Quadrant was a geographical location. Uncrewed Federation ships have already sailed through this area in the early years of the twenty-first century .

During a star-mapping mission that year, the USS Enterprise-D was going to the Morgana Quadrant when it met the lifeform known as Nagilum, a first for the Enterprise-D.

The Enterprise-D was the first human Federation vessel to explore this region when it arrived in 2254 .

Wrapping Up

In the science fiction television series Star Trek and its spin-offs , a galactic quadrant is a region of the Milky Way Galaxy explored.

The original Star Trek helps to allude to a region that could be interchanged with a sector. Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spin-off programs and films, on the other hand, relate to a system of four galactic quadrants, denoted by the Greek letters Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta in the original series. Each quadrant may be subdivided into sectors, which can be further subdivided.

It’s difficult to estimate the true extent of Star Trek Quadrants because of the large number of variables involved. The human characters in the series have explored a tiny portion of the world.

On the other hand, they have encountered races of aliens that have journeyed around the cosmos, so enlarging it for them. Hopefully, this article has given you a better understanding of exactly how large the Star Trek universe is and how we came to know about it.

Voyager is why star trek is replacing discovery’s spore drive.

Starfleet is abandoning the spore drive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, having found a better form of warp travel thanks to the USS Voyager.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 bids farewell to the spore drive, as USS Voyager's pathway drive takes over in the 32nd century.
  • Commander Stamets reveals Starfleet's decision to halt spore drive development, making Discovery unique in the Star Trek franchise.
  • The USS Voyager-J's pathway drive paves the way for safer and sustainable warp travel in Star Trek's future.

The 32nd century's version of the USS Voyager is the reason that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is abandoning Starfleet's revolutionary spore drive technology. Since they arrived in the 32nd century in season 3, the USS Discovery crew's one-of-a-kind spore drive has represented a potential replacement for dilithium-reliant warp travel in Star Trek 's future . However, various obstacles, most notably rogue Risan scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and his theft of the only working prototype have prevented the spore drive from being rolled out.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) reveals that Starfleet has shuttered further development on the spore drive . Starfleet's decision means that the USS Discovery will remain one-of-a-kind, making season 5 the last outing for Starfleet's spore drive. Instead of taking Discovery's spore drive further, Starfleet are instead forging ahead with the new pathway drive, first trialed by the USS Voyager-J in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek Is Ditching Discovery's Spore Drive - And That's Good!

Uss voyager is why star trek is quitting discovery’s spore drive, voyager has a history of scientific advancement in starfleet..

In Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 premiere, "Kobayashi Maru", it was revealed that the USS Voyager-J had been newly fitted with a protoype pathway drive . Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) was looking for the right captain to command the ship and test out this new technology. Now, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive" reveals that those tests were successful, leading to the pathway drive being the new standard for future Starfleet ships. The rollout is still in the early stages, however, as Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) states that his ship, the USS Antares, doesn't have a pathway drive fitted.

Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) was under consideration to command the USS Voyager-J, but President Rillak didn't believe that she was ready.

It feels appropriate that the USS Voyager is responsible for replacing Star Trek: Discovery 's spore drive, given its namesake's impact on warp travel centuries earlier . Star Trek: Prodigy revealed that, after returning to the Alpha Quadrant, much of the technology the USS Voyager encountered in the Delta Quadrant was adapted by Starfleet. For example, the USS Dauntless, commanded by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) had a quantum slipstream drive fitted, first encountered in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 finale, "Hope and Fear".

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Trek’s Delta Quadrant

When will we see star trek: discovery's pathway drive in action.

As the USS Discovery is in the middle of a vitally important mission to find the Progenitors' technology to create life, it doesn't seem like there will be much time for a refit. Therefore, it's unlikely that Discovery will be using the pathway drive at any point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It's certainly possible that Captain Burnham could receive assistance from a starship like the USS Voyager-J at some later point in Discovery season 5, but it's also possible that the pathway drive was just a tease of things to come in the now- canceled Star Trek: Discovery season 6 .

As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will pick up the baton in the 32nd century, however, making it the most likely candidate for a pathway drive demonstration . As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive. As the cadets learn how a pathway drive works, and how it differs from a more traditional warp drive, so too will Star Trek fans who tune into the YA-oriented show. Starfleet Academy leading the way with a new warp drive replacement would be a fitting way to continue the legacy of Star Trek: Discovery and its spore drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is looking to begin production in late summer 2024.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After being closed for over a hundred years, Starfleet Academy is reopening its doors to those who wish to pursue a career as Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of cadets as they come of age, and build friendships, rivalries, and romantic relationships while being threatened by a new adversary that could destroy the Academy and the Federation itself.

Why Star Trek Keeping Standard Warp Travel Is Best

The specifics of how the pathway drive works are still a mystery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's presumably rooted in traditional warp travel. The spore drive was an incredibly complicated method of travel that required specific calculations and a willing host to navigate the mycelial network . In "Red Directive", Stamets states that, with more time, he could have worked out the issues with navigation, but never got the chance. The grisly fate of the USS Glenn in Discovery season 1 revealed that the slightest miscalculation in spore drive navigation could have devastating consequences for the crew.

Presumably, the pathway drive is a means to achieve warp travel while using less dilithium, to reduce the Federation's reliance on it following the scarcity caused by the Burn. This is therefore a less risky proposition, which will be why Starfleet are now rolling it out following the USS Voyager-J's successful trial. While it may be disappointing for Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery , the pathway drive's potential to make warp travel safer and more sustainable should be something to celebrate.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 is streaming on Netflix.

WARP FIVE: Callum Keith Rennie on Discovery's Gruff First Officer

The Star Trek: Discovery actor talks Rayner's second chance, command style, and more!

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery.

Welcome to Warp Five, StarTrek.com's five question post-mortem with your favorite featured talent from the latest Star Trek episodes.

We're only three episodes into Star Trek: Discovery 's final season, but the stakes could not be higher. Not long after saving the entire galaxy from the Dark Matter Anomaly, Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery is handed a Red Directive mission from Dr. Kovich.

An 800-year-old science vessel was found on the edge of the Beta Quadrant. Aboard that ship is "something vital to the security of the Federation." They are to retrieve that artifact; however, they're not the only ones on the hunt for the artifact's ancient power. While chasing two criminals in the fifth season opener, " Red Directive ," Burnham comes across Captain Rayner and the U.S.S. Antares who is also hot on their trail and unwilling to let Moll and L'ak go as easily as the Discovery captain.

StarTrek.com had the opportunity to speak with actor Callum Keith Rennie on making first contact with Star Trek , demotions and second chances, his approach to Discovery 's newest distinguished yet gruff first officer, and more.

Point of First Contact

Callum Keith Rennie as Rayner on Star Trek: Discovery

"Under the Twin Moons"

StarTrek.com

Like many others, Rennie was first introduced to the franchise with The Original Series in his youth.

"My first contact with Star Trek was watching it on TV with the original," remembers Rennie. "That's the one that I always reference. If it comes on, I watch it still. For me, I did see all of those other variations as they came out, but I held onto my Spock and my Jim Kirk."

For the Love of the Federation

While pursuing Moll and L'ak on a sand runner, Rayner lifts his fist in the air in excitement of the thrill of the chase in 'Red Directive'

"Red Directive"

In "Red Directive," as Burnham and Discovery is in hot pursuit of this season's main antagonists, Moll and L'ak, they soon learn that the Antares captain has been pursuing them for quite some time, and he refuses to let the slippery pair go each time they're within grasp.

When asked how big of a threat Moll and L'ak, as well as the Progenitor tech, pose to the Federation? Rennie teases that more will be revealed in time, "He has a history [with them] that will be explained later."

Speaking on the choices we've seen Rayner make in response to the two criminals, he shares, "That's Rayner's style of command. His is, 'We're to get those people; we're not to make concessions.' There's no other way outside of what he wants to do. His drive is to succeed; 'Pick a thing, I'll go do it.' That's what he knows how to do."

The distinction is clear; Rayner is a gruff, smart Starfleet captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew — he leads, they follow. His approach is, you get the job done and apologize later.

In an earlier discussion with StarTrek.com , executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise noted, "What's interesting about [Captain Rayner] is that he is going to be a bit of an antagonist, but not in a bad guy way. He's going to push Burnham, and we'll get to see new sides of Burnham and new growth in Burnham because of her interactions with him."

He has a storied track record of wartime success. In " Under the Twin Moons ," Federation president Rillak has to remind him that times have changed and they're no longer at war. However, the Antares captain sees threats everywhere, arguing that the Breens are in-fighting, the Orions are regrouping, and war is always a possibility. Not only that, Moll and L'ak now have a head start at retrieving a piece of technology with unbelievable power. He wants everyone to stop living in a "candy-colored holo fantasy."

The Fallout of Q'Mau

A hologram of Captain Rayner appears in Discovery's Engineering room to aid Tilly and Adira as they monitor Burnham and Saru's presence on Lyrek in 'Under the Twin Moons'

During Burnham and Rayner's first run-in, while Discovery 's captain sabotages the fleeing thieves' ship while on the hull of their ship, she tells the Antares captain to release its tractor beam hold as the enemy vessel's warp bubble is starting to collapse and her ship can't beam her out to safety while she's in the diminishing bubble. Then, while on Q'Mau together, Rayner continues to pursue Moll and L'ak on his own leaving Burnham and Cleveland 'Book' Booker behind; stating he doesn't have time for their "strategic advantages." Rayner plans to thwart their getaway by detonating the explosive charges hidden in a mountain's entrance, risking the potential of harming those living on the settlement of Q'Mau. Burnham reminds him they're on a non-Federation planet undertaking a highly sensitive and classified mission. When the detonation spirals into a fast-moving avalanche that would decimate the local inhabitants, Discovery requests Antares aid them in creating a shield to block the avalanche as there is not enough time to evacuate. However, Rayner holds off on letting Antares leave orbit at the risk of allowing the two thieves to evade them again.

When Rayner is held accountable for his actions as Federation Headquarters holds an inquiry to the events on Q'Mau. Despite his commendable 30 years of service to Starfleet, and his longstanding friendship with Admiral Vance, the Antares captain was forced to take an early retirement.

"Here's a guy who's been in command for 30 years," Rennie distills. "He goes in to help Burnham and her crew, and then the next thing you know, he's dismissed. So, all of that is bad. If he didn't show up to participate in any of that, he would still just be running his own crew and doing his own thing. He'd be happy on the Antares until the end of time. But he went to help, he made a decision that caused a problem, and then he was fired, sent out to pasture, and he has to make a decision to go, 'Am I done or am I not done?'"

Second Chances and Second Contacts

A Ferengi bartender prepares a drink for a pensive Rayner who sits at the bar in the Discovery lounge in 'Jinaal'

"Jinaal"

Valuing Rayner's aid he provided her crew while she was on Lyrek, Captain Burnham tells Rayner she'd like for him to be part of her crew — her first officer position has opened up — and she knows he's not ready to end his Starfleet career here. After all, no one understands the value of a second chance more than Burnham herself.

Reflecting on the opportunity presented to his character Rayner, Rennie notes, "He wants to try to be a better person. He's looking at his stuff going, acknowledging at times that he's been too impulsive and doing the the thing that he shouldn't have done, and but doing it anyway."

On his second chance, Rennie adds, "Does he want to be retired or does he still want to be part of the Federation and Starfleet? And he makes that choice, believing, 'What's the worst that can happen? They'll fire me again.'"

An important component of modern Star Trek has been to show the many facets of Starfleet and the Federation. It's not a monolithic institution incapable of faults.

"You do the best job you can at the given moment, and sometimes that works out and sometimes that doesn't," reflects Rennie. "You have to be, 'Well, let's take that risk.' From a commander standpoint, nothing's infallible. There's certain missions that only certain people will be assigned to because of their style. He's the man for the job," before teasing, "You'll soon discover why he's a little harsh at times."

In " Jinaal ," while Burnham heads to the surface of Trill to unlock their latest crew, Rayner is tasked with getting to know the senior crew better. While his first impression wasn't great, he now has the opportunity to make a second first impression. Unfortunately for him, his second contact isn't off to a great start when he offers the crew 20 words to provide him insight into them.

It's not going to be an overnight scenario for Rayner to change his ways. "He doesn't want to participate with the Discovery crew the way Burnham wants him to be a team player," he explains. "He's not in that space yet. He's not good at, 'Let's all be friends.' It's not his style."

Joining the Discovery Family

At Discovery's lounge, Rayner looks over towards Tilly as she waits for her drink from the bartender in 'Jinaal'

Rennie's experience joining a series in its final season mirrors Rayner's experience joining a tight-knit crew.

"Coming into a show, you're a new kid in school, you don't know who you're going to be friends with," states Rennie. "You don't know if you're going to get along with anybody. Much like Rayner is there to do his work, I'm there to do my work. But, my [personal] experience was fun. Episode to episode, time spent with everyone, you warm up. There's a warmth that just grows as you move along [with Sonequa Martin-Green and this cast], and you've become part of something."

REVIEW: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Episode 3

I n Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 , the crew of the Discovery is in hot pursuit of thieves Moll and Mok. Booker ( David Ajala ) discovers a personal connection to Moll, whose real name is Melene. She is the daughter of Booker’s old mentor, Cleveland Booker IV. Booker’s longing to reconnect with her intensifies as she is the last remaining family he has. However, the Federation, still wary of Booker following his near cataclysmic actions in season 4 , considers the pursuit of Moll and Mok solely their jurisdiction.

The Discovery crew heads towards Trill in pursuit of the thieves. While en route, they delve into an 800-year-old mystery involving a Romulan scientist who researched the Progenitors, the primordial beings from which all life in the known galaxy originated. Utilizing the unique lifespan of the Trill, their investigation leads them to focus on a Trill named Jinaal. This Trill scientist existed concurrently with the Romulan scientist and the enigmatic riddle introduced in the season 5 premiere . By tapping into Jinaal’s experiences across his various lifetimes as a Trill, they uncover concrete answers instead of relying on speculation.

Early on in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 , this is the most true to traditional Star Trek the series has been in a long time. Throughout much of Star Trek: Discovery ‘s history , the focus has been primarily on action and drama. Even the opening episodes of season 5 carried that tone. However, as the mystery of the Progenitor artifact starts to unravel, it becomes clear that the Discovery crew is engaging more in puzzle-solving, research, historical exploration, and dialogue rather than participating in all-out intergalactic wars spanning galaxies, times, and dimensions.

This is further reinforced by the crew’s need to participate in the zhian’tara. It is the only way Captain Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green )  and Booker can speak with Jinaal.  Here, Wilson Cruz, as Doctor Hugh Culber, showcases his acting skills by embodying Jinaal’s character. his serves as another instance of his character taking on the burden of a demanding and emotionally taxing task on behalf of the crew. Given his role as a doctor, it’s natural that his empathy surpasses even that of his fellow Starfleet crewmates. However, it would be beneficial for him to prioritize his well-being sooner rather than later.

Through Jinaal, they uncover the truth about what the Romulan scientist was attempting to safeguard: ancient Progenitor technology. The technology was so advanced, so limitless, that it instilled fear in scientists from various species, compelling them to keep it a secret. That is, until someone could decipher the Progenitor riddle. Considering the state of the galaxy 800 years ago during the Dominion War, it’s understandable why they took such measures.

The Dominion War , from 2373 to 2375, witnessed all major powers of the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants engaging in conflict. Two military alliances, the Federation Alliance and the Breen-Dominion Alliance, clashed in a devastating struggle. Characterized by significant military and civilian losses, including the targeted annihilation of over eight hundred million Cardassians and the extensive deployment of starship fleets, it stands as one of the bloodiest and most destructive wars in recent galactic history.

Delving into the discussion of political disparities among species, Captain, now Ambassador Saru ( Doug Jones ), plans their marriage alongside President T’Rina ( Tara Rosling ). Saru navigates a new phase of life and a distinct form of warfare—cross-galactic politics. Constantly pulled in various directions, Saru finds himself serving as an Ambassador, yet his role feels largely unchanged. The primary divergence lies in his romantic conflict, overshadowing his cultural and ethical dilemmas.

Amidst the overarching Progenitor plot, Saru’s subplot appears underdeveloped, lacking the depth seen in the previous seasons. While hoping for thematic echoes of the Dominion War, the series currently prioritizes Saru’s intricate love story over utilizing his Ambassadorial position to shed light on cross-species political dynamics in the 32nd century.

The scientists from 800 years ago intentionally made the Progenitor’s secret elusive because they lacked trust in the powers of their era to wield the technology responsibly. Given the tumultuous events of the previous two seasons in the 32nd century, a similar sentiment likely prevails. This aspect alone could have made Saru’s Ambassadorial role this season more compelling.

However, instead of delving into cross-species political dynamics, his relationship with T’Rina becomes the primary source of conflict . Even as the Discovery crew edges closer to unraveling the Progenitor secrets, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 remains primarily focused on the crew adjusting to their new commanding officer.

The crew of the Discovery remains skeptical of their new first officer due to his tendency to act aggressively to complete the mission. To foster better understanding, Captain Burnham orders Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) to meet 1 – 1 the crew. However, what begins as an opportunity to acquaint himself with the crew members soon devolves into a lesson on connection.

It seems like an odd choice to introduce such an unlikable character, especially in the final season of the series. With this new addition disrupting the ship’s cohesion, the focus shifts away from unlocking the secrets of the Progenitors to addressing internal conflicts. Amid the final season, where the cast has formed strong bonds, it feels jarring to witness them having to educate someone on basic empathy.

With nearly a third of the season down, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 shows the series is taking its time to build the story it is trying to tell, for better or worse. The Progenitor storyline stands out as the most developed, while the remainder of the cast and crew grapple with interpersonal conflicts. As the midpoint of the season approaches, there’s a desire to see a crew that doesn’t require overt moral lessons, yet current circumstances suggest otherwise. Nevertheless, there are hints that these storylines could eventually intertwine to serve the overarching plot. However, the journey feels like a slow warp through space.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes every Thursday.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”
