The Sellaronda, a unique round trip around the Sella massif in the Dolomites

Around 26 km of beautiful, perfectly groomed slopes connecting val gardena, val badia, val di fassa and arabba..

summer tour rondo

The Sellaronda can be done clockwise: orange direction, or anticlockwise: green direction. Below you will find both suggestions starting from Selva Val Gardena.

The Sellaronda, also known as the 4 Passes Tour (Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena Passes) is unique: a ski carousel totalling 40 km (lifts and slopes) surrounded by breathtaking scenery: rocky peaks, dense forests and snow-covered landscapes. The 4 ski areas are connected by modern lifts and are suitable for skiers of medium skiing ability. The tour can be started from any of the 4 ski valleys and is easy to do in 5 to 6 hours. It is worth taking a leisurely approach to the Sella circuit in order to admire the impressive scenery of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to take a few breaks in some of the numerous refuges to recharge your batteries. It is advisable to check well the travel times of the lifts in order to return before they close.

The clockwise orange route starts with the Costabella chairlift in the centre of Selva Gardena, which takes you to the Dantercëpies cable car to reach the Gardena Pass. Then head down the slopes to Colfosco, where the Borest chairlift will take you to Corvara. Take the Boè cable car up to Campolongo to ascend to Bec de Roces. The route to Arabba starts with the cable car to Porta Vescovo, from where you ski to Pont de Vauz. The Fedom chairlift takes you to the Pordoi Pass, where a short descent connects you to the Lezuo chairlift, which takes you to Belvedere. After the descent to Pian Frataces you reach Lupo Bianco, where a chairlift takes you towards Col Rodella and then you reach the Sella Pass. A beautiful descent takes you back to Selva di Val Gardena.

The route marked in green on the map, anticlockwise, starts in Selva Gardena with the Ciampinoi cable car. Follow the slope no. 5 to Plan de Gralba and take the Piz Setëur chairlift. Ski down to the Sassolungo chairlift, through the beautiful "Stone City" to the Sella Pass. Continue with the Sasso Levante chairlift to the Salei valley, at the end of which you take the Pian Frataces chairlift, better known as Lupo Bianco, where the 6-seater chairlift leads to the Sas Becè hut. A long descent connects the Belvedere ski area with Arabba. Now take the chairlift to Bec de Roces, then down to the Campolongo Pass and continue with the chairlift to Crëp di Mont. Continue as far as Corvara. Two chairlifts take you towards Colfosco, from where a long cable car takes you to the Jimmy hut and the Val Setus chairlift to the Gardena Pass. The chairlift takes you up to Dantercepies, from where a beautiful descent through the forest takes you back to Selva Val Gardena.

You will find a list of accommodation facilities such as hotels, guesthouses, garnis, residences, flats and mountain huts, a list of events and the most beautiful excursion destinations in the Dolomites of the Sellaronda. We offer also tourist information such as: snow report, traffic information, useful numbers, shopping info, skiing, ski schools, taxi service and much more.

Getting to and from LPIA is easy!

Our new terminals are easy to navigate to get you where you need to be.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS June 14, 2021— In an effort to mitigate the impact of growing passenger traffic and COVID-19 protocols, key stakeholders at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) have finalized plans to ensure that passengers can be safely and efficiently processed through the airport during what promises to be a busy upcoming summer travel season.

Nassau has been selected as a homeport for two cruise lines beginning this month. Following the first 7-day cruise, approximately 900 passengers will be departing Nassau for the United States on Saturday, June 19th, 2021. The airport anticipates heavy arrivals and departures of cruise passengers every Saturday and Sunday thereafter, and for this number to grow to 3,500 passengers each weekend by July.

In addition, summer projections for land-based passenger arrivals and departures at LPIA indicate steady recovery from the pandemic, with a potential additional 4500 passengers between Saturday and Sunday.

“We are fortunate that our largest source market, the United States, has been very successful with their vaccine distribution and there is significant pent-up demand for travel given the challenges and restrictions of the past year living with COVID-19. People are ready to travel and month by month we are seeing improvements in our passenger numbers.” said Vernice Walkine, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nassau Airport Development Company Ltd.

“During this busy summer travel period we wish to assure the travelling public that their safety is our paramount concern. Our overall objective is to make certain that a high level of efficiency prevails in the terminals coupled with excellent customer service resulting in a positive experience for our passengers,” she continued.

The airport continuously works with its key stakeholders to maximize the efficiency of operations and mitigate any potential challenges within its facilities. As a result, in 2020 LPIA was one of the first airports in Latin America and the Caribbean to achieve a COVID-19 Health Accreditation from the Airports Council International.

As the airport supports Nassau as a home cruise port and manages its recovering land passenger base, LPIA is offering the following tips to local passengers planning to travel this summer.

1. Given the volume of passengers that will be commencing cruises in Nassau, if possible, avoid travel on Saturday and Sunday and choose a slower day to begin and end your vacation or business trip. Also, consider travel during off peak times and look for flights either before 9:00am or after 2:00pm, which is a peak travel period at the airport.

2. When travelling to the US, particularly on peak days and times, ensure that you are at the airport 3 to 3.5 hours ahead of your scheduled flight departure time. Given the impact of COVID-19, passenger processing is slower and more complex.

3. Whether you are vaccinated or not, a negative COVID-19 test result (PCR or Rapid Antigen) and completed Attestation form (found on LPIA’s website at www.nassaulpia.com) is needed for all persons travelling to the United States. This will be required for check in with your airline and tests should be completed prior to arrival at the airport.

4. For travel within The Bahamas, a negative COVID-19 (PCR Test) is required if you are not fully vaccinated (two shots with the last shot given more than two weeks prior to travel) along with a Bahamas Health VISA for domestic check in.

5. Checked luggage should be taken to your airline counter. Very Important: Please remove old luggage tags prior to placing a new luggage tag for your destination. If you are travelling to the United States, once you present your checked bag(s) to your airline, an image of your bag(s) will appear on the airline counter video screen to confirm each bag is checked in for your flight.

6. Checked luggage should be taken to your airline counter. Very Important: Please remove old luggage tags prior to placing a new luggage tag for your destination. Your airline should tag your checked luggage to your boarding pass. For persons travelling to the United States, please ensure you see an image of your checked bag(s) on the tablet screen at the airline counter.

7. After check-in, passengers travelling to the US may be directed by an airport ambassador to wait briefly in the airport’s Summer Garden Lounge prior to proceeding to airport security screening and United States Customs for processing. This wait is to allow passengers to be processed in order of scheduled departure time. The lounge is a beautiful and comfortable outdoor space with amenities like food and beverage, WIFI, entertainment and limited shopping.

8. Passengers should have their passport and boarding pass available to enter the security screening process. Passengers will be required to remove jackets, belts, shoes and empty pockets, and remove laptops from carry-on luggage for the security screening process.

9. As LPIA is a US Pre-Clearance facility, each passenger will undergo inspection by a United States Customs & Border Protection Officer prior to leaving Nassau. Bahamians need a valid passport and police record or US VISA for travel. Family members living in the same household can be inspected together.

10. Once these formalities are done, you may proceed to your airline gate or enjoy the shopping and dining amenities available in the U.S. Departures Lounge. All gates are within a three-minute walk from anywhere in the US or Domestic/International Departure Lounge.

11. Upon your return or arrival to Nassau, remember you will need a Bahamas Health Visa and a negative COVID-19 PCR test for entry to the country if you are not fully vaccinated. If you are fully vaccinated, then you will need the Bahamas Health Visa and proof of your vaccination. These are to be presented to Bahamas Immigration along with your passport for admittance to The Bahamas.

12. This summer, returning residents will now have two additional options to complete their Bahamas Customs declaration forms and pay duties or claim exemptions. This is in addition to the current process of presenting a completed C17 Customs Declaration form to a Bahamas Customs officer for assessment.

  • Returning residents should consider downloading and using the new Bahamas Customs Exempt App to fill out their declaration electronically, upload their receipts and pay customs duties and/or claim exemption online prior to arrival in Nassau. Once luggage is collected, returning residents then only need to proceed to a customs officer for baggage inspection.

High Angle View Of Cruise Ships Moored In Sea Against Blue Sky

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

The territory of the Bahamas includes 700 islands and 2,000 rocks and cays spread across 100,000 square miles of the North Atlantic Ocean. Technically, it's not part of the Caribbean region . It is, however, a warm-weather destination on the edge of the Caribbean and shares many of its cultural traditions, cuisine and music.

When it comes to oceangoing vacations, the Bahamas can accurately be described as the industry's leading destination, with the capital city of Nassau being cruising's number one port of call. In 2019, the Bahamas hosted 5.43 million cruise visitors, more than any other global cruise port, and it greeted nearly 1 million more travelers than Cozumel, Mexico, the next most-visited port. Indeed, the modern cruise industry's first itineraries in the 1970s focused on three- and four-day Bahamas sailings from Miami .

The archipelago's spectacular natural environment features brilliant blue skies, warm temperatures and exceptionally clear waters. But Nassau, located on 112-mile-long New Providence island, is also a metropolitan center full of modern amenities and impressive African, Caribbean and colonial cultural and historic sites.

Paradise Island, positioned immediately to Nassau's north, has large hotels and all-inclusive resorts that offer day packages for cruise visitors, providing access to premium golf (at the Baha Mar resort ), casino gaming (at Atlantis) as well as restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Not surprisingly, Nassau is a staple port of call for a wide variety of operators. Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean all sail here, as does luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises, premium cruise operators Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises and budget operator Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. All of those lines will call at Nassau in 2021.

What we could do without

Nassau is on an island within a vast archipelago. Many products are necessarily imported and that means prices, including meals at restaurants, can be high. Nassau can also feel a bit "touristy" at times, as the Prince George Wharf cruise ship dock can host as many as five large cruise ships at once. On busy days, cruise travelers are ubiquitous around the downtown area.

Nassau basics

Nassau is extremely popular as a warm-weather getaway destination that's closer to the U.S. Atlantic Coast than most Caribbean basin countries. As a plus, while technically not located in the Caribbean, Nassau and the Bahamas offers the same splendid sunny skies, brilliant blue waters and amazing culture and traditions.

On the small island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas archipelago. The port is normally a bustling affair, as disembarking guests walk from the pier to Bay Street, parallel to the water, and the downtown shopping area where you'll find tour guides and Jet Ski, beach and watersports excursion operators, taxis for hire, scooter rentals, craft and souvenir shops, and hair braiders.

Nassau's nearby Paradise Island district offers beaches, restaurants and shops as well as the Atlantis megaresort, which is among several properties offering day packages for cruisers in search of a daylong all-inclusive experience. The good news is that, with a little preparation, it will be easy to find the right Nassau activity to fit your personal vacation style.

Arrival details

Cruise ships visiting Nassau dock at the Prince George Wharf within short walking distance of Bay Street and the downtown district. Passengers who are booked on excursions arranged by the cruise line will find providers staged in areas leading from the dock. Private operators, including those who booked tours with guests separate from the cruise line, will be found beyond the first group.

Time zone: The Bahamas operates on Eastern Standard Time.

Language: English is the official language.

Currency: The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar. Both are widely accepted, and generally, it's not necessary to exchange money. If you want to exchange money, you can do so aboard your ship, although you can usually obtain a better rate at a local bank or ATM. Several banks are located on Parliament Street, a short walk from the cruise terminal. Numerous ATMs are also found around downtown.

How to get around

On foot: Many of Nassau's historic sites and the Bay Street retail district are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier and the downtown area. Bay Street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars, and cruisers so inclined can spend the day strolling the area. Just put on your sneakers, disembark your ship, take a few steps and start exploring. There are also ferries to nearby attractions and it's also possible to rent a car or motor scooter.

By taxi: Taxi operators are staged around the Prince George Wharf area. Taxis are not metered, so always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle.

By bus: Nassau's public buses are known as jitneys and offer a thrifty and convenient alternative to car rentals or taxis. The jitneys cost around $1.25 per person and stop at popular spots, including Cable Beach (see below).

Top sights and shore excursions

Nassau is a surprisingly diverse port. Beach lovers and travelers who enjoy water sports, diving or snorkeling will find a wide variety of excursions and activities to suit their tastes. Nassau is also filled with historic sites and shopping opportunities. Yet visitors are missing out on genuine colonial-era history if they don't also spend time exploring the historic architecture and attractions located steps from the cruise pier. You can book excursions through your cruise line or independently. And, don't forget that the Chase travel portal offers excursions bookable with cash or Ultimate Rewards points.

Here are some favorite pastimes for cruisers visiting Nassau.

Historic sites

Nassau's history is closely tied to the Caribbean pirate era of the 17th and 18th centuries, when the town served as a pirate sanctuary until 1718 when British Governor Woodes Rogers expelled the buccaneers. Today's downtown district offers 20 square blocks featuring architecture and monuments dating to this compelling era, most within walking distance of the cruise pier.

As a result, visitors can take a DIY-approach to exploring Nassau with help from the Bahamas.com website. Or, book a cruise ship excursion highlighting historic forts, Bahamian cuisine, "land and sea" programs, private island experiences and even Junkanoo-style music and dancing.

Historic sites near Prince George Wharf include Parliament Square, which houses the Bahamas' House of Assembly, the Senate Building and Supreme Court in pink pastel colonial buildings. A statue of Queen Victoria erected in the early 1900s also stands at the site.

The Queen's Staircase or "66 Steps" are framed by lush gardens and link downtown Nassau with Fort Fincastle. Ascend to the top of the staircase to reach Fort Fincastle, constructed in the late 1700s atop Bennett's Hill. Sweeping views from the fort's bluffs encompass downtown Nassau, the harbor and the cruise ship dock.

Bahamian culture was also shaped by Africans who arrived in the territory as slaves from Sierra Leone and other West African nations. Other Black people traveled to the Bahamas directly from Africa, Bermuda and Haiti, some enslaved by ex-British loyalists from Georgia and South Carolina, and others as ex-soldiers who won their freedom fighting for the British during the American Revolutionary War.

Several historic sites around Nassau recognize this influence, including Adelaide, Fox Hill and Gambier. These three historic villages were settled by liberated Africans in the 1800s and still maintain their African heritage. Cultural and sightseeing tours to these villages can be arranged. Nassau's Pompey Museum features a permanent exhibit on the African experience in the Bahamas.

Other cruise ship tours feature glass-bottom and jet boat excursions, catamaran sailings paired with reef snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and exclusive beach days with private cabanas.

While the luxurious Baha Mar resort on Nassau's Cable Beach does not offer day passes, savvy and sybaritic cruisers will reserve a room for the day for access to the property's premium facilities and amenities, including a private beach and beach club, motorized and nonmotorized watersports, a series of pools with shaded lounge chairs, cabanas and waterfall features. You can use 20,000 World of Hyatt points to book a day at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar . Or, spend 10,000 points plus $140. Nassau's nearby private islands offer a premium beach experience within a 15- to 20-minute ferry ride. Most cruise lines offer shore excursions to Blue Lagoon Island, but travelers can also book a visit through a travel advisor or on their own online. The excursion tends to be popular and does sell out, so be sure to reserve early in your voyage or before you leave home.

At Blue Lagoon, cruisers can swim in a calm lagoon, enjoy kayaking, water-biking or snorkeling tours, play with water toys like floats and inner tubes, or simply relax in a beach hammock under coconut palms. Blue Lagoon offers a gift shop, changing rooms, restrooms and shower facilities.

Blue Lagoon Island Bahamas

Balmoral Island, Pearl Island and Sandy Toes also offer private-island experiences near Nassau.

Cruise travelers whose ships arrive early in Nassau may want to take the approximately one-hour drive to Stuart's Cove, where they can experience snorkeling, diving and swimming with sharks.

Best beaches in Nassau

There's no shortage of great beaches in and around Nassau. In addition to the nearby private-island beach experiences, there are several local beaches within walking or short driving distance.

Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is approximately a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, offering travelers an inexpensive and convenient way to enjoy some sun and fun. You can normally see your cruise ship from the nearby beach, and vendors selling buckets of ice-cold Kalik and Sands beer (the local favorites) can be found lining the beach. Don't forget to bring your towel; chairs are available for rent chairs from vendors. Some will package a bucket of beer with chairs and an umbrella.

Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride away from Nassau just over the bridge that spans the islands. While beautiful. the beach's waters can be rough at times and the beach itself does not offer many amenities. However, locals parade up and down the beach offering chairs for rent and beverages sale. A long walk down the beach will bring visitors to Atlantis, where they can pose for their prerequisite Instagram shot.

Cable Beach

Cable Beach Nassau, Bahamas

Cable Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Prince George's Wharf and is accessible via taxi. A cheaper alternative is the No. 10 bus, which charges around $1.25 per person. The 2.5-mile-long beach is often described as Nassau's best, but it's one of hundreds across the Bahamas distinguished by bleach-white sands and remarkably clear blue waters. Cable Beach is home to several top Nassau resorts and offers a full array of watersports activities.

Other top Nassau beaches

Montague Beach is situated east of the Paradise Island Bridge and is home to a historic fort constructed in the 18th century. The beach promenade is a popular hangout on weekends and public holidays, with local vendors offering delicious local food and drinks. The beach is also a preferred spot for wading and picnicking.

Delaporte Beach is west of Cable Beach near the former plantation village of Delaporte. East of Nassau lies Saunders Beach, also popular with visitors and locals, and known for its beautiful twilight views.

The beach at Goodman's Bay features recreational facilities for children and is popular among joggers and exercise enthusiasts. Sandyport Beach is connected by a small bridge to the Venice-like resort Sandyport development near Cable Beach.

Where to eat and drink

True to its Caribbean traditions, the Bahamas' indigenous cuisine combines flavorful spices with fresh tropical fruit and seafood. Whether found at a lively outdoor market or gourmet restaurant, Bahamian gastronomy is filled with island flavor.

Local favorites

Conch fritters: A Bahamian delicacy (and fortunately bountiful in local waters), the queen conch forms the basis of the territory's undisputed favorite dish. Conch fritters are bite-sized flakes of conch meat fried in batter seasoned with goat pepper, hot sauce and sea salt, plus common Bahamian vegetables.

Conch fritters Bahamas

Peas and rice: Referred to locally as "peas n' rice," this traditional Caribbean dish, prepared in local Bahamian fashion, features deep brown pigeon peas and white long-grain rice seasoned with tomatoes, onions, thyme, tomato paste, goat pepper and salted pork or bacon. The ingredients combine to provide the rice its signature brown coloring.

Johnny cake: Made of flour, milk, butter, sugar and baking powder, this breakfast food is more bread than cake, with a texture that combines dense bread with a slightly sweet cake. As with other staple dishes, Johnny cakes are found around the Caribbean, with the Bahamas version traditionally baked in a large round pan until lightly browned then sliced and served in wedges.

There are a handful of Nassau food experiences visitors should definitely target during their day in port, from the casual to the exclusive. They include:

Potter's Cay conch shacks

The Potter's Cay conch shacks can be found beneath the high-arching bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise Island. Adjacent to lively fruit markets, the brightly colored conch shacks feature nearly 40 chefs in different shacks cooking fresh conch dishes in myriad ways.

Besides being a great place to sample an authentic Bahamian lunch featuring the freshest conch fritters and local dishes, the Potter's Cay shacks are a great place to interact with locals, other visitors and the chefs themselves as they chat about the day's catch and argue over a game of dominoes.

Check first with a local or with a frequent Bahamas visitor (like a travel advisor) to determine which stall is the best for the day. With 25 years in the same location, McKenzie, a former conch fisherman turned restaurateur, is a local celebrity among Potter Cay purveyors, with a shack positioned as the first on the bridge's west end.

Graycliff Hotel and Restaurant

About a 15-minute walk or a brief taxi ride from the cruise port, Graycliff Hotel is in a historic mansion whose extensive grounds were once an 18th-century pirate's headquarters. A visitor can spend an entire day exploring the property, which features one of the world's largest private collections, chocolate-making and cigar-rolling facilities, art galleries and craft shops.

The highlight, however, may be the hotel's five-star restaurant, an elegant eatery with a menu combining continental and Bahamian traditions. The sumptuous restaurant features four air-conditioned dining rooms and a garden dining area, with each room decorated to reflect the Graycliff's origins as a private home.

In keeping with its atmosphere, the dress code is strictly enforced at Graycliff Restaurant with required lunch attire described as "elegant casual."

Where to shop

When you're shopping in the Bahamas, look for souvenirs like:

  • Original paintings, carvings and craftwork
  • Handmade garments in bright tropical colors
  • Wood carvings

Nassau's Bay Street retail district is steps of the cruise ship dock, but there are a few hidden shopping spots just a short taxi ride away.

Virtually adjacent to the cruise port is Festival Place, an outdoor bazaar featuring 45 vendors selling crafts, food and drinks. It's ideal for folks seeking last-minute souvenirs and gifts just before they depart aboard their ship and for arriving passengers in search of shopping close to the port.

Once an open-air affair, Nassau's long-running Straw Market is located in the center of the retail action on Bay Street and also offers Bahamian gifts, crafts and souvenirs. Bay Street also features a proliferation of high-end, designer stores selling luxury goods including apparel, jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances.

Straw Market, Nassau, Bahamas

It's also possible to take a taxi to reach Nassau's best-kept secrets when it comes to hand-crafted, original art and crafts, plus apparel and home goods:

Bahama Hand Prints

Established in 1966 by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands, Bahama Hand Prints (near the corner of Ernest Street and Okra Hill) offers "bold and brilliant" designs across a wide range of garments, accessories and home furnishings. Many of the colorful and contemporary objects still use the duo's original designs.

Alannah and David van Onselen, who purchased the company in 2018, have retained Helen and Berta's signature style and the shop's collection of vintage designs, while new print designs have been added to the catalog. All products are developed in-house, crafted by the shop's talented sewing team and visitors are encouraged to drop in at the factory, speak with the staff and watch the printers at work.

Craft Cottage Bahamas

Craft Cottage Bahamas is the premier showcase for locally made home décor, glassware, jewelry, soaps, clothing and artwork in Nassau. On the grounds of the Doongalik Studios & Art Gallery in Eastern Nassau, the charming shop and gallery features a diverse and eclectic array of Bahamian-inspired items and emphasizes traditional crafting techniques.

The facility is housed in a traditional Bahamian-style home that shares the grounds with a variety of local Bahamian artists who also use the property to work on their own art and products. The shop offers an extensive and impressive array of handcrafted jewelry, painted glass, straw bags and accessories including homemade soaps and bath products.

Bottom line

While Nassau sometimes gets a bad rap as a "touristy" port of call and is often inundated by cruise travelers, the Bahamas' capital city is actually a diverse port with an impressive array of historic attractions, a variety of beach experiences, distinctive cuisine and extensive shopping opportunities. Nassau's Caribbean flavor, warm temperatures and beautiful natural environment have made the port a staple on cruise itineraries.

Nassau Reimagined: New Bahamas Cruise Port Set to Open on May 26, 2023

Following a four-year transformation project to revitalize and expand the cruise port on Prince George Wharf, the teams behind the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) and Global Ports Holding (GPH) announce the phase one completion of the country’s new downtown cruise port. The $300 million project, constructed by ENKA, will officially open to the public on May 26, 2023. With the addition of a new berth, and the refurbishment and repair of all piers, Nassau Cruise Port will be able to accommodate six cruise ships, per day, including three Icon-class ships, providing expanded tourism to the region. Through careful curation of onsite tenants and offerings, the new port will be a center for cultural expression and entertainment, celebrating the vibrant heritage and history of the 300-year-old city of Nassau.

The Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) opening marks a milestone moment for The Bahamas, as the expansion and revitalization of the port facilitates an increased capacity from 20,000 passengers per day to over 30,000 passengers per day – resulting in an anticipated four million cruise visitors by the end of 2023. As part of the first phase of redevelopment, travelers will be welcomed by a modern arrivals plaza, a Junkanoo museum featuring immersive experiences, authentic Bahamian retail and food and beverage outlets, an organized ground transportation area, a world-class amphitheater, event and entertainment experiences, state-of-the-art security technology, an art gallery and new green spaces. With honed focus on the promotion of Bahamian culture, and unique, locally produced products, tenants, within the Marketplace and Port Plaza are slated to offer a wide variety of experiences and goods that pay homage to the traditions of The Bahamas. The new port will be a landmark destination in the heart of downtown Nassau for cruise passengers, stopover guests and Bahamians.

“After three years of planning, and three years of development and construction, we are so thrilled to be able to unveil the new Nassau Cruise Port to cruise passengers, tourists and the Bahamian community,” said Mike Maura Jr., CEO and Director, Nassau Cruise Port Ltd. “Nassau Cruise Port will proudly showcase the best of The Bahamas over its 11 acres of reimagined waterfront development, creating a new downtown Nassau destination. We want each and every visitor to have a remarkable, memorable experience in Nassau, and we are excited to proudly display Bahamian goods, culture and warm hospitality to our guests. Cruise tourism is a critical part of the Bahamian economy, and the cruise industry is equally dependent on The Bahamas. The Government of The Bahamas was cognizant of the material growth occurring in vessel size and quantity and the advantage that could be gained by undertaking a redevelopment and expansion of its cruise port infrastructure. As we unveil the new Nassau Cruise Port, the steady counsel of the Government of The Bahamas has ensured the project’s success. Additionally, the valuable support and input from the cruise industry, Bahamian and international capital markets, and the fundamental leadership and commitment of the GPH and NCP teams have ensured this project is a best in class. This is indeed a very proud moment.”

Adds Mehmet Kutman, Chairman & CEO of Global Ports Holding Plc: “We are so proud of what we have accomplished at Nassau Cruise Port. This revitalization journey means so much more than just the construction of new buildings and beautiful design aesthetics, but also the promotion of Bahamian heritage and culture and countless new opportunities for the people of The Bahamas. GPH operates 27 ports in 14 countries, and Nassau is the busiest transit port in the world. Through our partnership with The Government of The Bahamas and key stakeholders, the GPH and Nassau Cruise Port teams are creating a world-class destination and enhancing the passenger experience for millions of visitors each year. The improvements made at NCP will showcase a Nassau that’s reimagined and ensures that Nassau will be the leading cruise port in The Caribbean.

By the completion of upcoming enhancements forecasted for 2024, travelers can expect to see the addition of a signature restaurant, along with further family-friendly attractions. For more information about Nassau Cruise Port, please visit nassaucruiseport.com .

ABOUT NASSAU CONTAINER PORT

Emerging business opportunities.

By moving all container port activities from Downtown Nassau to nearby Arawak Cay, APD Limited is initiating a cascade of new business opportunities on the island that promises to benefit entrepreneurs, shippers and the community at large:

Redevelopment of Downtown Nassau

Relocation frees over 20 acres of prime historic real estate for revitalization. This Downtown property can be redeveloped into a marina, restaurants, retail shops, entertainment and apartments. In turn, new business and employment opportunities will emerge for many Bahamians well beyond the shipping industry.

Immediately and over the long term, employment opportunities in both government and private sectors will be positively impacted by the new port, including:

  • Additional customs, carrier and terminal operator personnel to support expanded port operations to six days per week
  • Additional customs personnel for expanded customs entry processing at NCP
  • Additional police officers for enhanced security presence at NCP and GFT
  • New construction jobs have been generated with port development and more are expected
  • Rising employment with redevelopment activities in Downtown Nassau.

Public Ownership

Port relocation to Arawak Cay has provided the public-at-large with their first opportunity to invest in the shipping sector.

Lower Cost of Imported Goods

With more than 1,169 feet of berthing space and a 26-foot draft, the Nassau Container Port becomes a viable and strategic port of call for ocean carriers, potentially reducing trans-shipment and handling costs incurred by Nassau destined cargo. The increased draft also allows carriers to utilize a larger vessel for the Nassau call, thereby including multiple port calls in the schedule, resulting in lower vessel cost per TEU. Both scenarios provide Bahamians with the potential for lower cost of imported goods.

Savings for Local Buyers

By consolidating shipping operations to include bulk material, the construction industry benefits from bulk volume purchases of a variety of bulk aggregates. With larger inventories available, savings on volume purchases can be passed along to local buyers.

Support for Ongoing Development on New Providence

Moving the island's commercial shipping activities west to the Gladstone Freight Terminal will support ongoing business development in western New Providence.

Port Growth

Flexibly designed to expand with increasing cargo volumes and vessel traffic, the Nassau Container Port and the Gladstone Freight Terminal will be equipped to easily meet anticipated demand for the next 40 years. As New Providence emerges from one of the worst global recessions in decades, the port complex provides the island with a "bridge" to a new and more prosperous future.

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do

T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit.

Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) .

Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?

Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.

The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe.

What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?

The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.

Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau.

Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas

There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.

Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area.

There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray.

Transportation

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.

Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.

There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.

Royal Caribbean and the government of the Bahamas broke ground Monday on the joint venture to develop a strip of land in the cruise port of Nassau called Paradise Island.

The government in 2023 gave the OK for the cruise line to develop a 17-acre portion into what will be called Royal Beach Club Paradise Island when it opens in 2025. Cruise line executives and government officials, including Prime Minister Philip Davis, grabbed shovels along the white sandy beaches with turquoise water in the background.

“With the signing of the deal [for] Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, we embark on this project to further enhance the vitality of our tourism product,” Davis said. “Signing today’s agreement, we add another world-class experience to our tourism offerings. And even more importantly, we take a bold step toward greater Bahamian empowerment in the tourism industry.”

The site is on the western edge of the strip of land that runs alongside the waterway through which ships brought nearly 4.5 million passengers in 2023, making Nassau the world’s busiest cruise port of call.

Royal Caribbean’s site expects about 2,000 visitors a day. They will be ferried over from the port but then return by land going through downtown Nassau.

It’s the first site for the smaller-sized beach club private destination Royal Caribbean plans to build out as opposed to its private island and resort destinations such as Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas and Labadee on Haiti’s northern coast.

The Paradise Island spot will play up Bahamian culture alongside traditional offerings such as the beach, cabanas, four food and drink venues and three pools with swim-up bars. The site is being designed by a Bahamian architectural firm, and will give space for local artisan work for sale and live local music.

The project is a public-private partnership under which Bahamians are invited to own up to 49% of it. The plan is for locals to manage the experiences offered at the resort.

The cruise line will own 13 acres of the property while 4 acres go to Crown Land, which is a territorial area owned by the state. The cruise line will also pay a new tourism levy in exchange for the development.

“Marking more than the beginning of the construction process, today’s groundbreaking event symbolizes partnership, momentum and continued economic development for so many Bahamian entrepreneurs and the entire community,” said Jason Liberty, the cruise line parent company Royal Caribbean Group’s President and CEO. “We are grateful to our partners for their support, especially the Bahamian government, who stand with us here today in celebration of what is to come.”

The additional attraction to the port augments a $300 million overhaul of the Nassau Cruise Port that had its grand opening last year.

Already the port has expanded its capacity to six ships, including the ability to dock three of the massive Oasis-class ships from Royal Caribbean at once.

The revamp includes a new terminal building, Junkanoo museum, 3,500-person amphitheater, living coral exhibit plus more entertainment, food, beverage and retail space. Once complete, the port’s capacity will jump to more than 33,000 passengers per day. It had been around 20,000 a day.

However, short cruises still let you dine and dance on board, enjoy world-class entertainment, and visit nearby destinations like Nassau in the Bahamas; Key West, Florida; or Ensenada, Mexico.

If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Read on to find out which short cruises we recommend, where they depart from, and everything you can see and do over the span of three incredible nights.

Bridges and baths: The best things to do in Ronda, Spain

AD: This post is brought to you in association with ETIAS Spain

Set on an Andalusian mountain plateau, the town of Ronda is just over an hour – and a world away – from the beach resorts of Spain’s Costa Del Sol. This pueblo blanco (white town) has one of the most beautiful settings around, perched precariously on the edge of a gorge surrounded by rolling hills, whitewashed buildings, orange trees and olive groves.

Ronda is one of Spain’s oldest towns. It was first settled by the Celts and later inhabited by the Romans and Moors, and you can feel its history all around you in its cobbled streets, old mansions and stone churches.

It was a favourite with the 19th century Viajeros Romanticos (romantic travellers) – artists and writers like Orson Welles, Alexander Dumas and Ernest Hemingway who searched for inspiration in Europe’s most unspoilt destinations.

Ronda's old town

Today Ronda may be a bit more on the tourist trail, but it’s still kept plenty of its original charm. It’s still got that small town feel, with no high-rises or big branded hotels, and if you walk for 20 minutes in any direction you’ll find yourself out in the countryside.

Ronda is close enough to Seville or Málaga for a day trip, but as well as stunning views, there’s more than enough to see and do to make it worth staying a night or two. So if you’re looking for a spot for a relaxed Spanish city break – or an add on to a trip to Seville, Granada or the coast, here are some of my favourite things to do in Ronda.

The best things to do in Ronda, Spain

Statue of bullfighter Antonio Ordoñez at the Plaza del Toros in Ronda

See the famous Puente Nuevo (new bridge)

The heart of Ronda is the El Tajo gorge, a rocky drop plummeting over 100 metres to the Guadalevín River. The gorge cuts right through the centre of Ronda and splits the town in two. On one side is the Moorish old town and on the other is the 15th-century El Mercadillo ‘new’ town, and three bridges cross the gorge to connect them.

The Puente Nuevo or New Bridge is Ronda’s most famous landmark and its classic postcard shot – a giant triple arch with columns stretching 120 metres down into the depths of the gorge. Despite the name it’s over 230 years old (new by Ronda standards) and opened in 1783 after taking 40 years to build. Extra care was taken after the previous bridge on the same spot collapsed only six years after it was finished, killing 50 people.

Sunset over El Tajo gorge in Ronda, Spain

There are gory stories of Nationalist sympathisers in the Spanish Civil War being thrown off the bridge – inspiring Hemingway who used the idea in his book For Whom the Bell Tolls . And there’s a chamber above the bridge’s central arch which was allegedly a wartime torture chamber and prison, and now houses an exhibition about the bridge’s construction.

Admiring the Puerto Nuevo is one the most popular things to do in Ronda, but it’s not the only bridge in town. It’s also worth checking out the other two – the Puente Viejo (Old Bridge) and smaller Bridge of San Miguel (also known as the Arab Bridge). Take a walk over each of them for a different view of the gorge and the town’s historic buildings.

Puente Viejo (Old Bridge) in Ronda

Walk down into the El Tajo gorge

One of the best ways to see the Puerto Nuevo is to get down below and look up to really get a sense of the scale of this spectacular piece of engineering. To reach the bottom of the El Tajo gorge, start in the pretty Plaza de Maria Auxiliadora square where there’s an unpaved road you can follow, which isn’t too strenuous but turns steep and rocky in parts.

Along the way there are plenty of viewpoints where you can see the Puerto Nuevo from different angles, including a view of the waterfall below it. And once you’re at the bottom of the gorge you can follow the Guadalevín River or see ruined flour mills on the Carretera de los Molinos, which were destroyed by an earthquake in 1917.

The Puente Nuevo as seen from the El Tajo gorge

Visit one of Spain’s oldest bullrings

As well as designing the Puente Nuevo, architect Jose Martín de Aldehuela was also responsible for creating Ronda’s Plaza del Toros – one of Spain’s oldest and most impressive bullrings. It was built in 1785 and could hold 5000 spectators, and is unusual in that all the seats are covered by two-storey arched galleries. Although I’m not a fan of the sport, it’s still an impressive place to visit, and a big part of the town’s history and culture.

As well as exploring the arena, there’s a museum where you can learn more about Ronda’s bullfighting tradition, and the famous local Romero and Ordóñez families who produced a string of champions in the 18th century. Only one fight a year is a held at the Plaza del Toros now, as part of the Feria de Pedro Romero festival each September.

Ronda's Plaza del Toros bullring

Explore the historic Arab Baths

Ronda’s Arab Baths are some of the best preserved in Spain. They were built during the town’s 12th-century Moorish period and were used by Muslims to purify themselves before visiting the mosque. The design is similar to a Roman bathhouse, with separate hot, warm and cool rooms where people would gather and socialise.

The baths were built partially underground to control the temperature and heated by a network of underground chambers and furnaces. You might not be able to take a dip any more, but you can find out how they worked, and explore the arched ceiling rooms with their star-shaped roof vents designed to let steam out and light in.

The Arab Baths, one of the top things to do in Ronda

Try delicious local food

The altitude and sunny weather make Ronda great for growing fruit and vegetables, with tomatoes, peppers and broad beans bursting with flavour. You’ll also find rabbit from the hills and seafood from the coast, along with Spanish classics like Iberico ham.

The perfect way to try a bit of it all is at the town’s tapas restaurants. Some of our favourite spots were the tiny De Locos Tapas , with quirky dishes like tuna tataki and belly pork on the menu – though make sure to book in advance. And Entrevinos, a wine bar come tapas restaurant with a great selection of wines from the nearby Sierras de Málaga.

Or if you want to splash out, Ronda is also home to Michelin-starred Bardal , which offers a choice of tasting menus paired with wines from their cellars.

Cafés in Ronda, Spain

Climb the stairs at the Casa del Rey Moro

Despite a name that means ‘the home of a Moorish King’, the Casa del Rey Moro only dates back to the 18th century, though it was built on the site of an original Moorish well. Although the mansion itself isn’t open to the public, you can visit the beautiful gardens which were designed by French landscape gardener Jean-Claude Forestier in 1912.

The gardens stretch across three terraces built into the hillside, with fountains, streams and pools, decorated with colourful flowers and ceramic tiles. There’s also an original staircase which runs from the gardens down 200 steps to the bottom of the El Tajo gorge, and was originally used to fetch water when Ronda was under siege.

Looking down into El Tajo gorge

Admire the views from the Alameda del Tajo

With panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, watching the sun rise or set at the cliffside Alameda del Tajo gardens is one of the essential things to do in Ronda. This 19th-century park is laid out with five avenues lined with trees leading to the cliff edge.

On the edge of are viewpoints which jut out over the gorge – so make sure you’ve got a head for heights. On a sunny day the Alameda del Tajo gardens are a social hub for Ronda’s residents, who gather beneath the shady trees to catch up with each other.

Views of the Alameda del Tajo gardens in Ronda, Andalucia

Stroll through the Old Town

Ronda’s historic old town lies to the south of the El Tajo gorge and is criss-crossed by narrow cobbled streets. Take a wander through them and you’ll find sections of the old city walls, white and yellow-painted churches, tiled fountains and tucked-away cafés.

And if you think Ronda is beautiful in the daytime, just wait until you see it at night. The town is a popular spot for day-trippers from the coast, but once the sun starts to go down and the tour buses head off, wrought iron lamps light the narrow streets and tapas restaurant tables spill out onto the pavements giving it a peaceful, magical feel.

When to visit Ronda

Summers in Ronda are long, warm and dry. Unlike many Spanish destinations, July and August aren’t uncomfortably hot either, with average highs around 26–30°C (79–86°F). But summer is peak season, so it’s when Ronda is busiest and most expensive.

Ronda’s winters are short and mild, with daytime average highs of 14°C/57°F and lows of 8°C/46°F. Rainfall peaks from November to January, but there are usually only around five days of rain a month. And the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are a great time to visit – normally pleasantly warm and dry but not so busy as the summer.

Historic city walls in Ronda, Andalusia

How to get to Ronda

Ronda is located in Andalusia in southern Spain, an hour west of Málaga on the coast. Málaga is where you’ll find Ronda’s nearest airport, but it’s also fairly close to Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar airports. If you’re travelling by road, it’s around 105km (1 hour 15 minutes) from Málaga, 130km (1.5 hours) from Seville and 178km (2 hours) from Granada, though allow time to check out the views of the mountain scenery and pueblos blancos .

Ronda’s roads are narrow and street parking is limited, but there are several underground car parks – most major hotels have parking, or can advise you on the nearest place to park. Once you arrive, Ronda is fairly small and easy to get around on foot.

If you’re travelling by public transport, the bus and train stations are a 10-minute walk from the centre of town. Trains to Ronda are infrequent and usually involve a change at Antequera-Santa Ana. It takes around 2 hours from Málaga or 3 hours from Seville. There are also bus services from Málaga, Marbella, Seville, Granada and Cadiz.

It does look beautiful, Lucy. Possibly next Spring. It's been on my list for a long time and pre-Covid I got as far as checking out hotels. It's all too uncertain at the moment and the priority is still to get back to the UK to see my youngsters.

Fingers crossed you manage to get back to the UK soon!

Climb Stelvio, Mortirolo, Gavia, Giau, and the Sella Ronda

We start our journey leaving the ski village of Corvara, following a clockwise loop around the Sella Ronda. The first climb is Passo Campolongo topping out at 1875m. Then we have a mellow descent to the village of Arabba, where we will make a right to climb the Passo Pordoi topping out at 2239m. This stunning road bends and snakes along the mountside, where chairlifts dangle overhead paying homage to the winter sports. The descent down the Pordoi is stunning, sweeping switchbacks, long straight aways, this road is made for cycling. We soon begin our next ascent up Passo Sella, which tops out at 2218m. Views of the four Sella Towers are to our right, the Langkofel Group to our left, and this by far is the most scenic of all the passes. Last on our list today is climb up the Passo Gardena, reaching a height of 2121m, before a stunning switchback and turning descent to our hotel in Corvara.

What you need to know

RIDE DETAILS Passo Pordoi is located between the Sella group in the north and the Marmolada group in the south. In 1960 the first road was built over Passo Gardena. Shortly after, hiking trails were developed and chairlifts were installed. Today the Passo Gardena is vibrant year round with tourism.

WEATHER It is said that this part of Italy has the most sunshine and the least amount of rain when compared to the rest of the Alps and the Dolomites.

FUEL The Passo Sella is located between the provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol in Italy. It is also a fantastic spot to grab a coffee while cycling the Sella Ronda.

While you’re in town

For those interested in history, Forte Tre Sassi museum is just 18km from Corvara. As the webiste states, “This museum tells the story of the soldiers, not generals, or by historians. On the part of the vanquished and not by the victors.” If you are interested in what the soldiers went through fighting in the Dolomites during World War 1, this museum will give insight. Located between In Tra i Sass- pass and Valparola.

If you are wanting to ride more, you can easily add a few more km to the day. Cycle toward the village of La Villa from Corvara, and in La Villa you will make a right onto the SP 37 to climb Passo Valparola. After cresting the summit Valparola, descend the Passo Falzarego, turn right onto SR 48 toward Arabba, and then you have a short climb up Passo Campolongo before returning to Corvara.

Truly, cycling in this part of the world is special. Two other noteworthy rides to tackle are Passo Giau and Passo Fedaia (The Marmolada). To tackle the Giau, it is recommend to ascend Passo Campolongo, descend to Arrab, head toward Andraz, Ascend the Giau and descend to Pocol, then ascend the Passo Falzarego and return to Corvara. To ascend Passo Fedaia head back to Arabba, then descend to the village of Digonera. Then the climb begins. After cresting Passo Fedaia, you will toward Canazei, before determing you prefered route back to Corvara.

From there we’ll continue the guided tour of Ronda with a visit to the famous Arabic Baths, built in the thirteenth and fourteenth century next to the Guadalevín river, to which belongs an architectural and cultural value like no other.

Furthermore, within this guided tour you’ll get the chance to visit the three iconic bridges for which the town is famous, connecting the city and its various barrios.

Summer in Ronda: An unforgettable holiday

With a history riddled with bandits, fighters and rebels, the abrupt profile of the Ronda mountain range is synonymous with resistance and wild nature.

But not only its soul and indomitable presence serve as an attraction for the traveler: the art of bullfighting was forged here and, according to the story, the very same Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway had fun here.

Between cliffs, echoes of the birth of the art of bullfighting, vigilante bandits and flamenco ‘quejíos’ (lament) you will spend an unforgettable summer in Ronda.

A journey through the soul of Andalusia

Ronda concentrates the passion and essence of Andalusia, making it the perfect destination to enjoy a summer holiday, with the following stops and activities along the way:

Revel in the views of the New Bridge : The symbol of Ronda rises majestically to challenge the vertigo of the cliffs.

Views from the ‘Pussy’ Balcony : Ronda is a challenge. For example, the known Balcony of the Pussy that hangs from the bridge to offer spectacular views of the Alameda del Tajo.

Getting lost in the attractions of the Old Town: The impressive Mondragón Palace with its Arabic and Renaissance architecture. The Plaza del Socorro square where the paths of the village cross to live to the rhythm of a local … are just some of the stops in the village. Just go with the flow to get to know a village that you can easily cross in a day.

Museum of the Bandit : An unusual museum that will steal your heart. Along its rooms you will discover the most famous bandits of the region, who stole from the rich, to give to the poor.

Ronda Bullring : Did you know that it is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain? And that it is considered the cradle of bullfighting?

The Wall, between heaven and earth : Rising above the profile of the mountain range, the wall protected Ronda, a key place in the Muslim conquest.

Unexpected surprise when going down the steps of the House of the Moorish King : With only the gardens as an open place to visit…the stairs lead up to the very bank of the Guadalevín River. Crystal clear waters and a stone gorge will make you forget the outside world.

Adrenaline rush in the zip-line : New Bridge + zip-line…equal to extreme experience. Because you can see the cliffs but also enjoy them.

Pleasures for the palate : To recharge your batteries between so much sight and history, nothing better than sitting on a terrace to enjoy a good ‘salmorejo’ or the delicacy of Ronda par excellence: ‘rabo de toro’ (oxtail).

As you will see, this indomitable village brings together the essence of the deepest and most unknown Andalusia.

6 Best Things To Do On A One Day Trip To Ronda, Spain

' src=

by Mark and Kristen Morgan

Published: June 26, 2019

the main bridge in Ronda

If you’re planning a trip to Southern Spain, you should definitely consider visiting the stunning city of Ronda. In this guide you will discover the best things to do in the relaxing city of Ronda, Spain.

This quaint Andalusian gem is easily accessible from the Costa Del Sol holiday resorts, Seville or Malaga for a day trip.

Although Ronda is the third most visited city in Andalusia, it doesn’t have the same tourist conveyor belt feel like the Alhambra in Granada, Spain . It’s a much more laid back and easy going alternative.

We spent 2 fantastic weeks touring Andalusia in May 2018. Our time in Ronda was one of the highlights of the trip. The small town feel gives it a nice vibe and is perfect if you’re short on time.

We will explain why you should visit the beautiful mountaintop city of Ronda when you are in Southern Spain. If you want to get a real feel for the city, stay for a night.

Now, let’s start planning your one day in Ronda itinerary!

How To Get To Ronda

If you plan to put some days in sunbathing on the beach before heading up to Ronda for a city day trip, fly into Malaga.

It’s the closest airport to Ronda and is the main airport servicing Spain’s famous Costa del Sol. Many budget airlines fly into Malaga, perfect for cheap flight from most of Europe .

Or if you’re more about culture and cities, your other option is to fly into the ever popular city of Seville. Once you’ve explored Seville, you can then take an easy day trip to Ronda.

Unfortunately, traveling to Ronda, Spain isn’t the easiest thanks to slow winding roads and inconsistent rail connections, let’s check out how you can get to Ronda.

sign for Ronda train station

Train To Ronda

We recommend taking the train only for those who have interrail passes. There are multiple trains leaving per day but try to book ahead with interrail passes as there are only a certain amount available per train.

The train from Seville or Malaga takes a long time as you have to change either at Cordoba, Bobadilla, Antequera Santa Ana etc and is way more expensive. Take the bus instead.

If you’re visiting Cordoba and traveling down to Ronda for a day, the train only takes 1h 50m each way. Check out renfe and/or thetrainline  for more information on trains.

Drive To Ronda With Rental Car

Another option is to hire a car in either Seville or whichever part of the Costa del Sol you are staying in. You can reach Ronda from both areas in under 2 hours.

Make sure you check to see if you need an international drivers license to drive in Spain. Always remember to check local traffic before setting off.

You can check prices of rental cars here .

Bus To Ronda

The bus is the best option for those on a budget. You’ll need to book with Damas, who run several buses each day from Malaga to Seville or Seville to Malaga, via Ronda.

It should only cost around 11 euros and is direct into Ronda, taking just over 2 hours. Here’s the Damas website to search for bus prices, it’s in Spanish but can be translated to English.

Book A Ronda Tour

If you want to sit back and relax while local experts take care of organizing everything, booking an organized tour would be your best choice.

Most excursions take care of transport, give you skip the line tickets and sometimes even guided tours of top attractions.

Here are some of the top rated Ronda tour options:

  • From Seville: Pueblos Blancos and Ronda Full-Day Trip
  • From Malaga: Private Full-Day Bus Trip to Ronda and Setenil
  • From Costa del Sol: Ronda and Setenil de las Bodegas

What To Do In Ronda Spain With One Day

The secret is out. A little while back Ronda was relatively unknown, but a place of such beauty can never stay a secret for long. However, it’s not yet saturated, so now is a good time to visit.

Because it is so small, it’s easy to see everything in a day trip to Ronda. You won’t feel like you’ve missed anything.

The city is split in two by a deep canyon that the River Guadelevin has carved out over the years.

Ronda’s centerpiece is the magnificent Puente Nuevo bridge that spans the gap over the El Tajo canyon. At roughly 100m above the canyon floor, the bridge is a truly marvelous spectacle.

It is the reason most people will visit Ronda and rightly so because it’s awesome. Ronda just seemed to have a positive, happy and fun feel to it.

1. Marvel At The Awesome Puente Nuevo Bridge

view of the side of the bridge from bottom of reveine

What else could we start with?! You can see from the photos, it’s special! The best part is that the bridge can be viewed from so many different areas and it’s free to visit.

Construction of the 66m wide bridge we see today began in 1759 and finished in 1793. A total of only 34 years. The remarkable design has made it the most photographed bridge in Spain.

Everything centers around the bridge. You won’t need a map because you’ll naturally be sucked in the right direction by the crowds and atmosphere as you get closer to the area.

We highly recommend you take the walk down to the bottom of the El Tajo Gorge. There are several look out points between the river bed and the top of the bridge.

The hike should take around 2 hours, which also includes some time for photos. The hardest part is the wide steps in the beginning of the trail (which seem much steeper on the way back up)!

Travel Tip : Get up early or stay out late to get sunrise and sunset photos of the bridge, it’s worth it for some great shots of an awesome spectacle.

water underneath large bridge

Want some interesting facts from the history of the bridge?

  • The original bridge collapsed in 1741 and 50 people plummeted 100m to their deaths.
  • On the North side of the bridge near plaza Espana now sits the interpretation museum for the bridge, but the museum used to serve as prison for bandits and dangerous criminals in the 19 th century.

Ready for an unconfirmed myth?

It has been said that prisoners of the Spanish civil war were thrown to their deaths from off the Puente Nuevo bridge. Now, these are rumors but does it sound so unlikely?

You can find out more about the bridge on this website .

2. Enjoy A Picnic With A View

close up of bridge in Ronda

How about this for a picnic spot? The perfect plan is to pick up some treats from town and set up your picnic with a view half way down the canyon looking back up at the mighty bridge.

Grab a bottle of local wine, cheese and chorizo for your baguette. But remember, it will be hot so leave room for an ice cream.

Walk South over the bridge, take the first right onto Calle Tenorio and follow that until you see some footpaths to the right, leading down into the Tajo gorge.

You will find the best viewpoints of the bridge and a place to set up your picnic.

Travel Tip: If if is forecast to be a hot day, try an early or late picnic, avoiding 12-4pm. This way you can beat both the heat and the crowds.

3. Plaza De Toros De Ronda

worlds biggest bullfighting ring

The Plaza de Toros in Ronda was completed in 1784 and is made entirely of stone. It is the birth place of the style of bullfighting known as Rondeño.

This bullring has a fascinating history, including being home to Spain’s most notable and oldest order of horsemanship: Real Maestranza de Caballeria de Ronda.

The Plaza de Toros has been called the biggest bullring in Spain. Let’s clear that up.

It is not the largest bullring in Spain, in fact, it only has a 5,000 spectator capacity. Compared to 23,798 at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid, it’s actually quite small.

But it does have the largest round circle of sand in the world at 66m, which is equally as impressive.

The spectator seats have two levels. 136 gorgeous Tuscan sandstone columns support the roof and there are 68 beautifully crafted arches encircling the inside frame.

If you’d like to read more about the history of the bullring, check out this website .

Opening Times : every day 10am – 6pm, 7pm or 8pm depending on time of year.

Price : €6.50 adult, €8.00 with audio guide

4. Museum Del Bandolero (Bandit Museum)

Mark posing outside the Museo del bandolero in Ronda

This museum gives an insight into the lives of the local people in Ronda in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries. But with a twist. The museum puts an emphasis on some of the most notorious bandits in Spain’s history.

Throughout the museum are various official documents like arrest warrants, newspaper articles and exhibits. They build up profiles on the bandits to allow visitors to delve into their interesting lives.

A friend recommended the bandit museum and we found it really interesting! Bandits are a popular and sometimes romanticized topic from the history of Spain.

The museum is about a 5 minute walk away from the bridge heading South.

Interesting in the Bandit Museum? See what other people are saying on TripAdvisor here .

Opening Times : every day 11am – 7.30pm except Saturday open until 8pm.

Price : €3.75 adult.

5. Visit The Arab Baths

The top place in town to see Moorish architecture is the Arab Baths or Baños Arabes. The baths, built in the 13 th century, are now widely regarded as the best preserved Arabic hammams in Iberia.

You will find the baños in the old Arab quarter (now San Miguel quarter) about a 10 minute walk from the Puente Nuevo.

The hammam is split into three distinct areas following the Roman model

Fires would heat water in the furnace room, then steam would heat the warm and hot baths but exit through chimneys before reaching the cold bath.

More information about the history and design of the baths can be found here .

Opening Times :

  • Autumn and Winter Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays 10:00am to 3:00pm.
  • Spring and Summer Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm and Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Price : €3 adult

6. Explore The Intricate Street Of Ronda

street views of old buildings in Ronda

If you have any time left you can explore the pedestrian friendly town center around Carrera Espinel. Ronda’s streets and Plazas are filled with clothes shops, gift shops, restaurants, churreria’s and cafes.

There are also plenty of bars with seating outside in the sun if you fancy slipping into a tavern for a cold beer.

You could use Ronda as the perfect stop-off point between Seville and Malaga, or as a round trip from either city. But why not stay a night to enjoy the atmosphere once the crowds diminish?

When we visited Ronda, we stayed a night to be able to experience the city at its fullest. There are many top rated hotels and apartments available in Ronda making you spoilt for choice.

Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain and one of the most impressive whitewashed towns in Andalucia . Most travelers go on a day trip to Ronda, and I assume that you are too if you’re reading this.

Since there are a lot of things to do in Ronda , you might wonder what to do in Ronda for a day so that you don’t miss out on the biggest attractions.

I have traveled to this incredible town, perched on top of both sides of the dramatic El Tajo Gorge several times and I recently spent a few weeks there to make sure I explored it in-depth.

From all there is to do, I created this one day in Ronda itinerary so that you can see the most important sites in what is one of Andalucia’s oldest towns.

Get ready to explore the epic gorge, take an iconic picture in front of the New Bridge, and visit the Arab Baths, among other unforgettable experiences. This is one of the prettiest towns in Malaga .

How to get to Ronda

The closest airport to Ronda is Malaga Airport. From there, you can either rent a car or travel to Malaga city by train and continue to Ronda by either bus or train . There are also several organized tours from most major cities to Ronda.

Getting to Ronda is a beautiful drive no matter where you come from, but particularly the windy roads from Costa del Sol are mesmerizing with incredible views.

Note that in the winter months, you might get snow or ice on parts of the road, so make sure you check the weather forecast before you set out on a drive to Ronda.

When visiting Ronda in one day, the easiest place to park is at Parking Martínez Astein , which is an indoor car park right at the entrance of Ronda on the top of the main pedestrian street.

From there, you can walk straight down past shops and restaurants to the bottom of the street where you find the historical center to your left and the viewpoints straight ahead.

However, if you want to park for free, there are options by turning right and passing the mentioned car park. Street parking is generally free in that direction.

The last time I went to Ronda, we spent a while there, so we wanted free parking and found heaps of space on the side of the road near the public swimming pool and the Mercadona and ALDI supermarkets. It took us about 15 minutes to walk into the historical center and was well worth it.

Read my complete guide to parking in Ronda if you need more information.

Buses from Malaga to Ronda take between 1 hour 45 minutes and 3 hours from Estación de Autobuses de Málaga. Therefore, it is important to check the travel time before booking the bus to get the most out of a day in Ronda and not waste most of the day on the road.

Note that if you get easily car sick, you might want to take something for it before starting the journey, as the road up to Ronda is an endless zig-zag journey into the heart of the Serrania de Ronda mountain range.

The bus station in Ronda is only a few minutes walk from the historical center and the New Bridge. When you get out of the bus station, you basically just walk to the right and you will get to the lower part of the main pedestrian street where you find shops and restaurants.

how to get to Ronda

By organized tour

Finally, if you do not want the hassle of taking public transportation or renting a car, there are several guided tours from the major cities nearby, like Malaga, Seville, and Granada. I will mention a few highly-rated options here for you to consider.

Besides being convenient, going on a tour means you will learn a lot about the history of Ronda from a local guide and you will have a rich experience.

Personally, I love independent travel, but there is a lot of value in a guided tour which cannot be compared to any individual day trip.

The downside, in my eyes, is that most organized tours include the bullring, but I have managed to find some tours that don’t include entry tickets, I have noted which ones below.

Best time for a day trip to Ronda

Ronda is a wonderful destination to visit from October to May when the temperatures are pleasant. If you’re in Andalucia in the winter months , make sure you bring layers as it can get cool in the evenings and even in the shade during the daytime.

However, the summer months can get extremely hot inland, so I would rather suggest that you visit one of the amazing coastal towns in southern Spain at that time of the year.

That said, if the only time of the year you can go is in summer, a day trip to Ronda is a lot more doable than spending more time there.

My favorite time to go on a Ronda day trip is in February/March when the almond blossoms cover the valley.

What to do in Ronda for a day

Before getting into the nitty gritty of this Ronda day trip itinerary, I want to give a little mention of one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ronda and why I do not include it in my itineraries or top things to see lists.

Ronda is home to Spain’s oldest bull ring. Many tourists visit on a tour even though they are against bullfighting and I agree, it is a big part of the Spanish culture, especially in Andalucia.

But before you make a choice, I want you to ask yourself one question.

Do you want to support bullfights?

If the answer is no, then I suggest you do not pay money for tickets that go to one purpose; promote and organize more bullfights.

Ronda bull ring is still in operation to this day, and as long as they organize bullfights, I will not stand behind any visit there that supports them economically to harm more animals.

You can support organizations working against bullfights and other activities where animals suffer and explore other sides of Spanish culture instead.

The bullring can be seen from the outside without supporting animal cruelty.

Ronda Viewpoint

Mirador de Ronda is the most famous viewpoint after the viewpoint of the New Bridge and also the first one you reach walking down to the end of the pedestrian street past the bullring.

This makes it a natural first stop no matter if you visit Ronda in one day by car, bus, or train.

The viewpoint is connected to a little park and has a pavilion overlooking the dreamy countryside with layers of mountains as a backdrop that surrounds Ronda.

Walking around the path from the viewpoint you will have continuous views and entering the Paseo de E Hemingway the last bit to Puente Nuevo, gives you a wee peak of the majestic bridge.

One day in Ronda Spain

The New Bridge is the biggest attraction in Ronda and the image most people fall in love with before visiting this historical town near Malaga .

Before crossing Puente Nuevo, you have the option to take a tour of the bridge if you want to. Personally, I have never done this tour, but it seems like you can walk inside the bridge which might be cool.

Then, cross the bridge, and take in the views from both sides. Don’t underestimate the views on the “backside” of the bridge, the gorge is absolutely breathtaking!

Once you get to the other side of the bridge, take the first right after the tourist shops and continue through the old streets until you reach a park and a viewpoint at the end of the street.

At the left end of the park, you find the stairs taking you down to the viewpoint. This is truly why most people go to Ronda in the first place!

The New Bridge was built in 1793 to better connect the new and the old side of the town of Ronda, which at that time was only connected via the old Roman bridge further down the gorge and the Arab Bridge even further down.

Day trip to Ronda

Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor

If you are going to visit one church while in Ronda for a day, make sure you see Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor. It totally blew me away.

It is a beautiful walk from the view of the New Bridge through narrow streets, orange trees, and palaces.

Walking around the church, it totally looks like a cathedral, while the front has a more modest look to it with the clock tower and wooden balconies and arches where you can see the only remains from the 14th-century Moorish mosque that once stood there.

Visit Ronda in one day

After visiting the church, it is a good time to have lunch. There is a bar next to it where you can grab a bite, otherwise, I suggest you walk straight down to the other side of the New Bridge where you came from and look for lunch around there.

A very good spot is the restaurant of the Hotel Don Miguel which is situated right on the wall of the New Bridge (I stayed there the very first time I went to Ronda and it is a really cool spot for a feed.) The views of the gorge are absolutely jaw-dropping.

Make sure you try some local wine, Serrania de Ronda is famous for its lovely wines and even though you can’t go on a Ronda winery tour , at least you get a taste of its delight.

What to see in Ronda in one day

Arab city walls

After lunch, head to the ancient city walls, if you come from the side of the New Bridge, you can walk down towards the Arab Bath and step to the right to walk along them before walking back down to the baths on the lower side of the walls.

If you come from around the church, just keep walking straight down and you will come across them and walk on the inside of the walls towards the left until you come out right above the Arab Bath.

There are sections where you can walk on the walls and you can climb up a watch tower. I think this is a really cool site in Ronda that many visitors overlook.

One day in Ronda

The Arab Baths in Ronda possibly date back to the 13th century or earlier and is one of the must-see attractions when you visit Ronda in one day.

They are said to be the best-preserved Arab Baths in Spain and after visiting a few, I can say that these are truly outstanding. Thus, I would highly recommend adding them to your list of sites to enter on your Ronda itinerary.

They are situated right by the oldest bridge in Ronda, the Arab Bridge, where you can get a peek at the Old Bridge (which is a Roman Bridge a little bit higher up that you will be heading to shortly after this visit.

Arab baths Ronda

After the Arab Baths, walk up the old steps until you reach the Old Bridge that was built around 200 years before the New Bridge on the lower part of the gorge.

From there, you can see incredible views of the gorge and walk up to a number of viewpoints, but before you do that, walk through the ancient arch at the end of the bridge and up the hill until you reach Casa del Rey Moro.

Ronda in one day

Casa del Rey Moro

When looking up what to see in Ronda in one day I don’t see Casa del Rey Moro mentioned very often and it is such a gem to catch.

Not only does the palace have wonderful gardens with peacocks walking around and splendid views, but you can walk down to the Water Mines at the bottom of the gorge through ancient stairwells passing halls with arches and windows facing the ravine.

At the bottom, it is absolutely mesmerizing with the houses on the top of the gorge reflecting in the water in front of you.

I had been to Ronda multiple times passing by this amazing place before I stopped by and actually took the tour which comes with an audio guide.

Ronda day trip

Viewpoints in Jardines de Cuenca

After visiting Casa del Rey Moro, return back down to the Old Bridge and walk up to the viewing platforms in Jardines de Cuenca.

There are multiple platforms and the higher up you get, the more spectacular it gets as you will not only see the spot you walked down to from Casa del Rey Moro, but at the top, you will also have a rewarding view of the New Bridge.

The gardens are beautifully decorated with flowers and benches. You can exit the gardens near the top and you will come out close to the New Bridge.

Sunset Ronda day trip

Grab a bite to eat before you leave

No matter what transportation you choose for your day trip to Ronda, you will likely walk up the pedestrian street. If you are hungry, there are many places to grab a quick bite, tapas, or a full meal before you leave.

Reflections on this Ronda itinerary

There is so much to do during one day in Ronda Spain that it is easy to pack an itinerary with too much to do. I think the above should fill up a good one day Ronda itinerary without making you run from place to place.

That said, we are all different and if you feel like it is too much of one day, I highly recommend skipping whatever attraction you want so that you get more time somewhere else or just walking around the old town.

Ronda is such an incredible place and it is one of the most popular day trips from Malaga for a reason. Yet, it can be worth spending a couple of days of your Andalucia itinerary there if you have the time.

Especially if you are doing a southern Spain road trip , you can use it as a base for day trips to nearby villages like Casares , Gaucín , or one of Andalucia’s hidden gems , the unique Pueblo Museo (Genalguacín) which are some of the prettiest white villages near Malaga .

A day trip to Ronda from Malaga

Ronda is undoubtedly one of the finest towns in Andalusia and something of the jewel in the crown in Malaga province. Its plunging gorge, pristine white façades, stunning monuments and a rich traditional in bull fighting and wine make a day trip to Ronda one of the must-dos on any holiday to Malaga.

But getting there is no easy task. Train timetables conspire to give you hardly any time to see the town. Bus journeys are long and who relishes the idea of being on board a bus round all those bends? You can, of course, hire a car but that can be expensive for just one day. The solution? Book yourself a personalised day trip to Ronda from Malaga.

But make it a day trip with a difference

Forget that coachloads of other tourists. That large umbrella or big stick in the air. That straining to hear the guide’s talk through those crackling earphones. That waiting for the others to catch up or finding you’ve been left behind while you take a photo.

No, we mean a proper day trip with a reputable company who will give you value for money and allow you to experience the real Ronda.

Such as Costa Excursions. Founded by Peter Fischer and Thomas Liedtke in 2015, this company offers day trips to Ronda from Malaga with the difference. You’ll enjoy an adventure, experience real Spanish culture and find some personal enrichment. Not bad for a day out!

DISCOVER MORE THINGS TO DO IN MALAGA

What you get on a day trip to Ronda

This day trip will depart from your hotel or apartment in Malaga or Costa del Sol or from your cruise terminal so it’s super easy from the start. On the way to Ronda, you’ll get to see scenic views of the Andalusian countryside – particularly stunning in spring and autumn – plus some very pretty villages. Don’t miss Teba, home to the Richard the Lionheart Castle, Cuevas del Becerro, perched on a ravine and the lovely white village of Cañete La Real perched on the hillside. The journey takes about an hour and a half.

And then once you reach Ronda, the real amazement starts. Views with a capital V, monuments like no other and a rich, rich history. Thomas or Peter, your personal guide (remember, it’s just you on this day trip from Malaga) will take you on a very special tour of the town and show you all the highlights.

Puente Nuevo Ronda

Insider information

Costa Excursions guides really know their stuff and you’ll be treated to your own tour of Ronda with all the information. History, gastronomy, customs, anecdotes… all recounted as you walk the streets of the town and admire the sights and sounds.

There are plenty of opportunities to take photos (and more photos) while you’re visiting Ronda. Your tour takes place in your own time and at your own pace. No rushing and no wasting time either.

Your guide will also tell you the best places to buy typical local produce including the famous Ronda wines and cheeses. And guide you to one of the best restaurants in Ronda for a lunch overlooking the town’s famous views.

Both Peter and Thomas were brought up and live in Malaga so they know what they’re talking about. They believe that a tour should be an experience that can be difficult to get in a large group. Costa Excursions was born from this idea and aims to give visitors a unique insight into Ronda.

Highlights in Ronda

For such a small place, Ronda packs in the things to see. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights is the dramatic gorge, formed by the River Guadalevín that divides the town into old and new districts. The historic Puente Nuevo bridge crosses the ravine giving you a chance to marvel at the 100m drop below you and the far-reaching views across the Ronda plains and mountains.

Ronda bull ring

In the old quarter, there’s plenty to see. The Arab Baths, built in the 13 th century and the best preserved in Spain; the old wall and gate from Ronda’s Islamic past; the Palacio de Mondragón built as a residence for the Moorish King Abomelik and used by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella later on… You can also see some impressive churches and the Cuenca Gardens with their spectacular views of Ronda and the countryside.

Back over the bridge and into the new quarter and you’ll see the famous Plaza de Toros, the oldest bullring in Spain. The museum showcases bullfighting history and you’ll see photos of famous fans including Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Visit the atmospheric Plaza de España and more beautiful churches.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
