The Road Trip on Paramount Plus is a romantic comedy that brings to life another bestseller by author Beth O'Leary as it follows on from the success of Paramount’s previous hit drama The Flatshare , also a book by Beth O’Leary.

Starring Emma Appleton, Laurie Davidson and David Jonsson, this series follows Addie (Appleton) who is on a road trip to a friend’s wedding in Spain when she’s forced to share the ride with her ex Dylan (Laurie Davidson). Flitting between the past and the present, the show focuses on giving love another shot and explores whether someone can be the right person but at the wrong time.

Novelist Beth O’Leary, author of The Road Trip , says: "I'm so thrilled to finally be able to shout about this news! 42 and Paramount Plus were the dream team behind The Flatshare series, so it's wonderful to know The Road Trip is in such safe, skilled hands.

The Road Trip the plot

The Road Trip follows Addie (Emma Appleton) is setting off on a road trip in a creaky campervan with her sister Deb (Isabella Laughland), heading to a friend’s wedding in Spain. However, they hit a bump in the road when they have to share the ride with Addie’s ex, Dylan (Laurie Davidson), his best friend Marcus ( Industry star David Jonsson) and a complete stranger called Rodney (Angus Imrie).

The story intercuts between Addie and Dylan’s intoxicating holiday romance in the past and the surreal escapades on their road trip in the present. But everyone has secrets and life in a campervan offers no place to hide. Plus, they all have different ideas about what really happened during their holiday fling and why the pair broke up. Will Addie and Dylan’s journey back to where they first fell in love lead them to an unexpected happily-ever-after?

Lead actor on The Road Trip is Emma Appleton plays Addie, who is forced into close quarters with her ex. She has starred in The Killing Kind , Lola, Everything I Know About Love, The Last Letter from your Lover, Traitors and The Witcher . She also played Nancy Spungen in the series Pistol , about The Sex Pistols.

Laurie Davidson as Dylan

Laurie Davidson is playing Addie’s ex Dylan. He previously played William Shakespeare in the series Will and has also had roles in Cats, The Good Liar, The Sandman, Guilty Party and The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die .

David Jonsson as Marcus

David Jonsson takes on the role of Dylan’s best friend Marcus. He previously starred as Gus in the hit series Industry and has also been in Endeavour, Deep State and Rye Lane . He has a lead role in BBC1's Agatha Christie mystery Murder Is Easy .

Gus has a new, more casual look, for Industry season 2.

Who else is starring in the Road Trip?

Other stars of The Road Trip include Isabella Laughland ( Foundation , Trigonometry ) who plays Addie’s sister Deb and Angus Imrie ( The Crown, Fleabag, The Archers ) who plays Rodney, who bags a lift with the gang.

The Road Trip is filmed on location in Bristol and this island of Gran Canaria which is part of Spain. 42 is producing the 6 x 45 min series in association with PTIS – the international studio division of Paramount Global. The drama was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell, Paramount's Deputy Chief Content Officer, UK.

Sebastian Cardwell says “We saw brilliant success across the globe with The Flatshare , and we are thrilled to be working with 42 again on adapting another of Beth’s much-loved and best-selling novels. The Road Trip is the perfect addition to our expanding drama slate on Paramount+ and I can’t wait to see this incredible cast bring these characters to life.”

China Moo-Young (Everything I Know About Love) is lead director of The Road Trip and Stella Corradi (Killing Eve) will direct block two. Executive producers for 42 are Miriam Brent, Rory Aitken and Eleanor Moran. Nikki Wilson ( Wolf, Doctor Who ) is producer and Kingsley Hoskins ( The Girl Before, The Flatshare ) is co-producer. Ryan O’Sullivan & Matilda Wnek (Vigil 2) are the lead writers and serve as executive producers on the series. Phoebe Eclair-Powell (Two Weeks To Live) writes episodes three and four, with Olivier award-winning Waleed Akhtar (The P Word) writing episode five.

Miriam Brent, Rory Aitken and Eleanor Moran, Executive Producers at 42 said: “We are so excited to be setting off on The Road Trip . Disney+ and Swedish pubcaster SVT have unveiled cast and first-look images for Whiskey on the Rocks, a satire miniseries about the dramatic days when the Russian submarine U-137 ran aground just a stone’s throw from a secret marine base in Sweden in 1981. Rolf Lassgård will play Swedish prime minister Thorbjörn Fälldin, alongside Anders Mossling ( Spelskandalen ), Niklas Engdahl ( Bonusfamiljen ), Filip Berg ( Familjen Andersson ) and others. The show will air on SVT in Sweden in December 2024, with Disney+ global premiere dates to follow. 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared scribe Jonas Jonasson wrote the original story. Disney+ and SVT are co-producing with Skyverse Nordic.

Akhilesh Jaiswal’s Underwater Adventure ‘Starfish’ Gets Trailer

A trailer has launched for Akhilesh Jaiswal’s Starfish , a thriller is set in an underwater world based on Bina Nayak’s best-selling book, Starfish Pickle . Its stars the likes of Khushalii Kumar, Milind Soman, Ehan Bhat, and Tusharr Khanna, following Kumar as a skilled commercial diver with a rebellious heart, who fights her demons from the past while on the calm waters of the ocean. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar’s T-Series and Almighty Motion Picture. It releases later this week (November 24).

France’s Média-Participations Signs Sales Boss

France’s Média-Participations has hired a Head of Sales for its distribution arm. Fréderic Gentet joins Mediatoon in the newly-created post with immediate effect and will oversee the sales, marketing and servicing departments, responsible for finding homes for shows such as SamSam: Cosmic Adventures, Garfield and Tintin . He was most recently the Head of Sales for Princess Sam Pictures, overseeing the global launch of Tara Duncan . Gentet will be based in Paris and report directly to Caroline Duvochel, MD of Mediatoon and Head of Audiovisual and Innovation at Média-Participations. ”We are delighted to welcome Frederic Gentet to Mediatoon,” said Duchovel. “His extensive commercial and marketing experience with major youth brands will be a valuable asset in developing international sales and strengthening the influence of our kids and family universe.”

10 Indian travel series on Youtube that’ll keep you up at night

There’s nothing like binging on a well put together Indian travel series – whether you’re at home wanting to inject yourself with a dose of wanderlust or simply want to stay curious and connected – travel series is always a good idea to stoke your inner wanderlust.

Plenty of such series exist on several OTT platforms and on the internet as a whole which makes it daunting to figure out just what to watch and what not to watch, but I’ve chosen 10 Indian travel series on Youtube (very best ofcourse!) to help you narrow it down:

1. TVF Tripling

Tripling is an epic adventurous story of three siblings namely Chandan, Chanchal & Chitvan who embark upon an impulsive journey of their lifetime after being entangled in their daily problems and basically life as we know. The cast is shown road-tripping across several locations within India in total 2 seasons and 10 episodes released as of now. First season of this amazing series was released in the year 2016, at a time when Indian web series industry was evolving. The amazing locations featured in this Tripling Season 1 were Manali and Jodhpur while in Season 2 we get to see Kolkata, Lucknow and Sikkim. But do you think they were able to solve their problems in this road-trip?

2. Soulmates

Soulmates is a hardluck story of the two ex-schoolmates namely Anshul Chauhan and Priyanshu Painyuli who accidentally bump into each other while on their trip to Shillong. Priyanshu, who happens to be an aspiring music composer comes to Shillong chasing a popular girl of a rock band, ends up meets his schoolmate Anshul who is on a solo bike trip across northeast. In this 10 episode series of the 1st and only season released as yet, they explore Shillong, Umbling and nearby waterfalls together in search of this popular girl of the rock band but is it as simple as it appears to be?

Backpackers is a rattling good mini-webseries revolving around Kanan and a group of free-spirited college friends namely Era, Shivang and Anna who accidently meet each other on a bus during a road-trip to Manali and this unforgettable journey sparks a never ending bond in them. The mini-series talks about Kanan’s solo travelling adventure with a group of complete strangers, who help him not only to get out of his comfort zone but also help him undergo a perspective change as a person. Bazaar travels, as the name suggests, is all about checking out some of the really old Indian markets in the vibrant cities of India namely Jodhpur, Kolkata, Delhi and Jaipur. Barkha Singh, an actress and travel enthusiast takes us on a journey through the narrow lanes of Sardar market in Jodhpur in season 1 followed by Mullick Ghat Flower Market, New Market (Hogg’s Market), Kumartuli, College Street (Boi Para) markets in Kolkata in season 2 after which she heads straight to the popular Chandni Chowk and Shahpur Jat market in Delhi in season 3 and ends her quest in Johari bazaar, Bapu Bazaar in Jaipur in the final season 4. Rise is an award winning web-series about an IT guy Shrey (Vikrant Massey) who after years of savings and hard work buys his dream bike – Ducati Scrambler 800 cc and is excited about the new day at work with his new bike but nothing works for him as he had planned. Life takes a complete U-turn for him once he reaches his office and thus starts this incredible bike-trip from Pune to Gangtok. The series talks about meeting new people irrespective of age and how people are constantly running as a part of the rat race and hardly taking a stop to live for themselves. Something worth thinking about, isn’t it?

Azad Parindey is a 1 season mini web-series about two groups of youngsters; one coming from Delhi and the other from Mumbai who meet each other at Rishikesh waiting for their respective tour guides for two different treks. Due to some mix up on part of the tour guide, both the groups find out that they are part of the same trek which takes them on an fun filled adventure of a lifetime. This three episode series talks about youth bonding and friendships, something that travel has always preached about. So how many friends have you made on your travels?

Since Backpackers is only 3 episodes long, you might be able to finish it off in one sitting and maybe jump on to next one real quick.

Two beautiful ladies, one caravan, half troubles and zero miles to Sikkim, Caravan Chronicles is a dream come true sort of road trip. Sharanya Iyer and Ankita Kumar are the bright faces of the series who cover 30-day off-roading, on-roading through some unheard villages and towns of Sikkim. This travel series isn't just about discovering nooks and corners of the beautiful unknowns but also the challenges, friendship and Luna, the caravan that comes along. Priyanshu and Anshul, our protagonists run into each other in ever so marvellous Shillong while looking for two completely different things. This Zoom Studios production is a feel-good web series for the people who are in love with the idea of bumping into their soulmates in a romantic setting. Other than a heartfelt story set in a picturesque corner of East India I love the fact that Anshul is a biker and Priyanshu is on the backseat. Travel love story goals indeed!

For centuries, travel has fascinated people. What started as just a means of earning a livelihood and settling down, gradually turned into a hobby for many. And as the age of digital entertainment began, it took the hobby of travelling and started making digital/virtual travel possible. Its main objective was to make travel more and more accessible for everyone. With this purpose, various shows, movies and web series started coming into the picture.

And with India having such a promising talent and an equally enthusiastic audience to consume it, web series soon became a rage. In this blog, we wish to share with you 10 travel web series of India that will make you go – Chalo, Bag Bharo, Nikal Pado.

1. TVF Tripling

You cannot talk about the travel web series in India and not mention Tripling. Tripling, created by The Viral Fever (TVF) is a story of 3 siblings on a trip and how they discover their relationship and the sibling bond. It is one web series that makes anyone who has watched it, an instant fan of the show. With powerhouse actors like Sumit Vyas, Manvi Gagroo and Amol Parashar, this show also boasts a beautiful soundtrack.

2. Away From Home

Produced by The Shoelace Films and published on The Vibe channel, Away From Home is a series that takes the viewers through a virtually immersive experience where they get to witness the splendid visuals of Andaman. It also takes us through the overall culture of the local Andaman people. This travelogue is the first of its kind in India and it follows young explorers on a journey to discover beautiful places.

If you are a young and passionate person, stuck in the same old 9-5 routine and are waiting to pursue your dreams, then Rise is the best watch for you. The protagonist, Shrey, dreams of going on a cross-country road trip on his dream bike. The whole journey of his is what the entire web series is about. A must watch if you ask me.

4. Take Me to Nagaland

A digital creator and filmmaker Tanya Kanijow takes us on a mesmerising journey through the gorgeous state of Nagaland. In this web series, she pays homage to Nagaland’s culture, tribes, food and pop culture and more. Truly a one-of-a-kind show. It shows how passion and love for travelling can manage to bring together something so beautiful.

5. India on a Plate

India’s street food is arguably one of the best in the world. With so much flavour, colour and texture, street food is eaten by all age groups with equal enthusiasm. India on a Plate is a series by IndiaTimes and hosted by Kubbra Sait. Kubbra travels throughout India to taste the mouth-watering delicacies and also to find out the interesting stories behind those.

6. Way Back Home

The hattrick entrant from The Vibe, Way Back Home is again another travelogue that encompasses activities of travel, adventure, music, lifestyle and people. This is easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing series made in India. It is rich in its craft, is unscripted and therefore a very refreshing experience. It is also one of the most cinematically and musically well-made series. Don’t miss it.

7. Under the Rupee

Creative Director Rohan Thakur and The Vibe deliver yet another fine piece of art. Under the Rupee is a series where the team travels to all the countries where the Indian Rupee is of more value than the local currency. The series features their adventures, banter and a lot of laughter. For all those who look for something unique and quirky, you know what to watch.

8. The Trip

Four girls on a road trip to Thailand for one bachelorette party and a million more adventures along the way. Sounds fun right? The Trip is your perfect choice if you are looking for a nice movie night out with your girl gang. And with amazing performances from your favourite artists like Lisa Haydon, Mallika Dua, Shweta Tripathi and Sapna Pabbi, you will love this show even more.

9. Backpackers

As the name suggests, this web series follows a story of two young and passionate people who meet on a backpacking trip to Manali and how the story builds up from there. This is one of those feel-good web series that leaves you with a smile on your face and an intense desire to immediately go to Manali.

10. Caravan Chronicles

This web series features two women, one caravan, countless adventures and memories along the way to Sikkim. Caravan Chronicles is a dream come true sort of road trip and covers a total of 30-day off-roading, on-roading through some remote places in Sikkim. A bumpy ride yet a very happy one indeed.

The Trip Episode 1 review: This one is going to be one smooth ride right from the get-go

The Trip is a web/TV series that traces the road trip of four girls as they embark on a journey to Thailand to celebrate the bachelorette of one of them

Why aren’t there girl buddy movies? Why can’t there be a movie about a bunch of girlfriends going on a road trip? Can female actors be friends? The Trip is the latest show on Bindass and is about four girlfriends from different walks of life going on a road trip to Thailand for a bachelorette as one of them is going to get married.

The four main leads in the movie are played by Lisa Haydon, Shweta Tripathi, Mallika Dua and Sapna Pabbi and kudos to the casting team, it’s spot-on. Lisa Haydon plays Shonali Dutt who is a budding musician, living in with her boyfriend Neil played by Monish Anand (read: cute), who wants to succeed but on her own terms.

Ananya Makhija, played by Shweta Tripathi, is smart, articulate and an absolute romantic at heart. She is the one who is about to get married, making her dreams of a big fat Indian wedding come true.

A bit of buzz kill and also new to the group is Sanjana Kapoor, played by Sapna Pabbi, who is helping Ananya loose weight through yoga, is opinionated and strong-headed. Fun, humorous and a bit of a bully, Nazia Malik portrayed perfectly by Mallika Dua, is the cherry on the cake.

Lakshya Raj Anand, who has previously worked as an Assistant Director in movies like Bang Bang and Ek Tha Tiger , has made his directorial debut with The Trip . Considering the way it’s all put together, it’s hard to believe that it’s his first. Writers Amit Babbar and Rohit Kishore Bagai penned down something relatable yet fresh. The visuals are amazing and the music works perfectly well too.

>While all of this worked, what did not really go down well was what probably gives the money: sponsor integrations. Web series these days have several multiple sponsors. That’s alright but the craft involved in seamlessly integrating them is important. About 5 seconds of a sponsor’s TVC on Shonali’s Facebook wall was a bit of a force fit.

What I cannot wait is for the visuals as they road trip it from Delhi to Thailand (DOP Sanket Shah is a pro at this) and for several other interesting characters that are going to be introduced as the series goes forward (P.S. the actor playing Arjun Khanna, the one who is getting married to Ananya, is going to be an eye candy of a surprise).

The Trip Episode 1 was just about perfect. It ends with Neil proposing to Shonali and that leaves the audience with just the right amount of curiosity building over the week for Episode 2.

This show will tickle your funny bone and make you root for the underdog, Vipul.

5. The Aam Aadmi Family: How middle-class are you? This web series is a cocktail of generations who come together to show the nitty-gritty of everyday life. This is one show that has relatable characters who have hilariously relatable stories to share.

6. Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai Take 2: The much-awaited comeback of the hit show, this one is highly recommended for every 90s kid who grew up watching the Sarabhais on TV. From the constant tug of war between the modern day saas-bahu to the friendly banter between a father and son, this one is full of punny jokes.

7. The Trip: Four girls set out on a bachelorette road trip from Delhi to Thailand. Each of them has been struggling in her personal life, fighting her own battle and the trip not only helps the girls admit their shortcomings and fight their demons together. This one is going to make you reminisce the memories you made with your childhood gang of friends.

8. Baked: Three students from the Delhi University decide to open up a food delivery service, what happens next is a mix of mirth and chaos. This one is a complete entertainer, full of all the right vibes from the capital city of Delhi.

9. Official Chukyagiri: A small-town boy moves to Mumbai in search of the right opportunity to make himself shine. Grounded and homely, Spandan Chukya is a classic case of a geek who hasn’t seen the glitzy life in a metro. As Spandan makes his way into a company and rolls out ideas that win him respect, this show is a must watch for every small-town outsider who was bullied and made to realize insecurities that never existed.

Paramount+ has greenlit original UK series The Road Trip, based on the best-selling book by Beth O’Leary, with Emma Appleton, Laurie Davidson and David Jonsson in the lead roles.

42 is producing the 6×45’ series in association with PTIS – the international studio division of Paramount Global. The Road Trip was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Chief Content Officer, UK, and is his second 42 commission following the global success of its adaptation of Beth O’Leary’s debut bestseller The Flatshare , which launched last year.

42 is a London and LA-based management and production company. Established in 2013, 42 produces films and TV drama, and represents an eclectic range of high-profile and emerging talent.

The Road Trip is a witty, contemporary, emotionally complex romantic comedy about giving love another shot. Can someone be the right person, just at the wrong time? And is there ever a future in returning to a past love?

Addie and her sister are on a road trip to a friend’s wedding in Spain when they are forced to share the ride with Addie’s ex Dylan, his irrepressible best friend Marcus, and complete stranger Rodney. With nowhere to hide but a creaky campervan, the group must confront their buried history as secrets and revelations cause many a bump in the road.

Emma Appleton ( The Killing Kind, Everything I Know About Love ) takes on the role of Addie, Laurie Davidson (Mary & George, Guilty Party) will play Dylan and David Jonsson ( Rye Lane, Industry) will play Marcus. Also joining the cast are Isabella Laughland ( Foundation, Trigonometry) as Addie’s sister Deb, and Angus Imrie ( The Crown, Fleabag ) is Rodney.

Intercutting between the past and present, we will follow Addie and Dylan’s intoxicating love affair in the past – which started as a holiday romance one heady summer – alongside the hotbed of secrets and surreal escapades of the road trip in the present. Everyone has a different idea of what really happened between Addie and Dylan. But how and why did they break up? Who was to blame? And will their journey back to where they first fell in love bring a happy-ever-after?

With all the fun of Planes, Trains and Automobiles , and the misty-eyed nostalgia for summer love of Normal People , The Road Trip is a modern, heart-warming story about love in your late twenties. A kaleidoscopic rom-com, it explores love in all its guises through a trio of unforgettable relationships: a class-divided romance, a codependent bromance, and a knotty but affectionate sisterly bond.

China Moo-Young (Everything I Know About Love) is lead director and Stella Corradi (Killing Eve) will direct block two. Executive producers for 42 are Miriam Brent, Rory Aitken and Eleanor Moran. Nikki Wilson ( Wolf, Doctor Who ) is producer and Kingsley Hoskins ( The Girl Before, The Flatshare ) is co-producer. Ryan O’Sullivan & Matilda Wnek (Vigil 2) are the lead writers and serve as executive producers on the series. Phoebe Eclair-Powell (Two Weeks To Live) writes episodes three and four, with Olivier award-winning Waleed Akhtar (The P Word) writing episode five.

On the commission, Sebastian Cardwell said: “We saw brilliant success across the globe with The Flatshare , and we are thrilled to be working with 42 again on adapting another of Beth’s much-loved and best-selling novels. The Road Trip is the perfect addition to our expanding drama slate on Paramount+ and I can’t wait to see this incredible cast bring these characters to life.”

Beth O’Leary, author of The Road Trip , said: “I am so thrilled to finally be able to shout about this news! 42 and Paramount+ were the dream team behind The Flatshare series, so it’s wonderful to know that The Road Trip is in such safe, skilled hands. Filming for The Road Trip has now commenced on location in Bristol, UK, with filming also taking place in Gran Canaria, Spain.

The television rights deal was struck by Sheila David at Catapult Rights, acting in conjunction with Tanera Simons at Darley Anderson and Associates Ltd.

The Road Trip will be exclusively available on Paramount+ in the UK as well as all international markets where the service is available. The series is the latest Paramount+ original title to be greenlit from the UK as part of a wider slate of international drama originals that will premiere on Paramount+ around the world.

Reese McGuire drove in a career-high five runs , Tyler O’Neill hit his third home run of the series and the Boston Red Sox finished off an opening 10-game trip with a 12-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Tanner Houck (2-0) allowed four hits in six shutout innings and struck out seven. The right-hander became the first Boston pitcher to go at least six innings with seven or more strikeouts in each of his first two outings of a season.

“He threw strikes, he moved the ball around and made pitches. He’s in a good spot right now,” manager Alex Cora said of Houck. “We needed him to go deeper than five and he did that. And then the offense hit pull-side homers. It was a good day overall and a great road trip.”

David Hamilton and Rafael Devers also homered for Boston, which went 7-3 on the trip and opens at home on Tuesday against Baltimore.

Angels slugger Mike Trout averted a shutout in the eighth inning with his fourth homer of the season , a solo shot to left.

McGuire had a three-run homer in the sixth that extended Boston’s lead to 7-0. He also drove in runs with a grounder in the eighth and base hit in the ninth.

O'Neill, acquired in an offseason trade with St. Louis, tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Mookie Betts for the major league lead in homers with five. O'Neill also became the first player to have at least five home runs and five walks in their first nine games with the Red Sox.

After going deep twice in Friday's 8-6 victory, O'Neill put a sinker from Chase Silseth (0-1) over the wall in left-center for a solo shot to make it 3-0 in the third inning. It was the second time in three days the Red Sox hit three home runs in an inning.

Hamilton, called up on Saturday after Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated left shoulder, opened the scoring in the third when he drove Silseth’s high fastball off the out-of-town scoreboard above the fence in right-center for his first big-league homer.

With it bouncing back onto the field, the ball was in the dugout by the time Hamilton crossed the plate.

“Definitely not trying to do that, but ran into one and it got out,” Hamilton said. “First one. Can't put that into words.”

Silseth allowed three runs and three hits in five innings with seven strikeouts.

Angels manager Ron Washington was pleased Silseth was able to rebound after the tough third inning.

“He salvaged a good outing. When he left the game we were still it. We just couldn't shut him down and we couldn’t score any runs,” Washington said.

The Red Sox sent 10 the plate during their four-run ninth. Ceddanne Rafaela had the key hit with a two-run, bases-loaded single.

Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (1-0, 5.40 ERA) will start Tuesday in the first game of the season at Fenway Park.

Game 10: Red Sox at Angels lineups and notes for series finale

The Red Sox have continued to get great pitching through the early part of the season, but it was their defense that let them down with a pair of unearned runs in Saturday’s loss to the Angels.

Tanner Houck has the ball Sunday as Boston looks to finish this West Coast road trip on a strong note. The righthander threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 10, to beat the Athletics on Monday.

Chase Silseth had a less successful first start for the Angels; he lasted just three innings in Miami, throwing 76 pitches and allowing three earned runs on five hits.

I was introduced to onigiri, and yaki onigiri, 35 years ago when I lived in Japan. For years after I returned to the States, I could rarely find either, and onigiri was among the foods I missed most. Now, onigiri (sometimes, in Hawaii, called omusubi) have caught on in the U.S., but yaki onigiri remain – at least in my experience in Maine – harder to find. “Yaki” means grilled in Japanese; “onigiri” are rice balls, so these are, you got it, grilled rice balls, although often, as at Mami, they’re in the shape of a triangle.

Typically in Japan, onigiri have a small knob of filling – things like pickled plum or spicy tuna – whereas yaki onigiri are not filled. At least that’s how I remember it. But Mami fills its yaki onigiri, and I am not complaining.

At lunch one day late last month, that filling was a small amount of carrots and garlicy sweet potato rendered with pork fat. The yaki onigiri was brushed with a soy-miso glaze and chili crisp (that last also non-traditional) before it was grilled. After the snack had burnished to a deep, caramely brown, it arrived at my table, nice and warm and scattered with scallions and furikake. I broke it open with chopsticks: The medium-grain rice was moist, chewy and soft all at once, the crispy crust a perfect contrast. If “umami” were a smell rather than a taste, it’d smell like this did.

Mami, a lunch and dinner cafe, says it sells about 30 yaki onigiri a day in the winter, double that come summertime. Other recent fillings have included spicy salmon and beef with shishito peppers. In Japan, I encountered yaki onigiri mostly on nights out drinking and sharing small plates of Japanese bar food. You eat them with very fresh oshinko (Japanese pickles), said my friend Dan, who grew up in Japan, worked there for years and speaks fluent Japanese, explaining, “at the end of the meal to absorb all the alcohol. The capstone.”

For me, yaki onigiri bring back memories of (specifically) dark, snug izakayas under the train tracks in Tokyo, and (generally) being young and carefree and on a grand adventure.

And Mami’s yaki onigiri are delicious.

Red Sox Notes: ‘Great Road Trip’ On West Coast Sets Tone For Season

The Boston Red Sox entered the 2024 season knowing that starting pitching, above all else, would be needed to break out at some point.

So far, that crew’s wasted no time, leading the charge as Boston’s runaway strength and that didn’t change during the team’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday evening. This time, it was Tanner Houck who picked up right where he left off.

Houck was supplied more than enough run support amid Boston’s 12-2 rubber-match victory over the Angels, but that didn’t stop the right-hander from maintaining focus. Regardless of what the scoreboard read, Houck didn’t treat the Los Angeles lineup any different, and it paid off. The Angels showed little to no life, due in large part to the tone set by Houck on the mound.

“It was a good day, overall. It was a great road trip,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters, per NESN’s postgame coverage. “Coming into this season, we recognized how challenging it is to come to the West Coast right away. The organization did everything possible to put these guys in a situation where they were gonna be fresh and ready to go. Credit to them, they did an outstanding job.”

Houck pitched six scoreless innings , surrendering just four hits and two walks against the Angels while striking out seven batters. That marked the second straight outing from Houck in which he tossed six scoreless innings. He’s now 2-0 on the season with 17 strikeouts and a 0.75 WHIP.

Personally, for Houck, displaying an ability to go deeper into starts was priority No. 1, which hasn’t appeared to be an issue yet.

“It’s great, definitely a confidence booster, especially with all the pitches,” Houck said, per NESN. “Like I’ve talked about, the slider feels a lot better this year, spliter feels a lot better and then obviously adding the complementary pitch with the cutter and then obviously always throwing the sinker. Feels good to start out this way. Hope to continue to move forward and keep putting my best foot forward.”

The Red Sox return to Boston with an impressive 7-3 record start to the season.

Red Sox Wrap: Boston Ends Road Trip On Strong Note Vs. Angels

Here are more notes from Sunday’s Red Sox-Angels game:

— Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neil extended his American League lead in home runs to five, going 1-for-3 at the plate.

— In six of Boston’s first 10 games to begin the 2024 campaign, Red Sox starters provided six-plus innings while holding opponents to two or fewer runs. Boston’s pitching staff entered the series finale with Los Angeles leading MLB with a 1.44 ERA.

“Pitching-wise, we’re different,” Cora explained, per NESN. “Everybody knows it. I’m not just saying we got this secret sauce now. The group did an outstanding job in the offseason, they bought into it in spring training and for the first road trip it was amazing.”

— David Hamilton got the call up from Triple-A on short notice as a corresponding move to Trevor Story’s shoulder injury. Hamilton got the start at shortstop on Sunday and belted his first career big league home run during his first at-bat, finishing the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Red Sox facing another winnable series against Angels to close out season-opening road trip

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox are 5-2. With an asterisk.

Yes, the Red Sox did technically compile three of those victories against a Major League Baseball team. Technically . But the Oakland A's -- as the shameful developments on Thursday displayed loudly and clearly to the world -- are just barely an MLB team. Barely .

The A's currently sit at 1-6 on the season. Their lone win came when a Guardians reliever walked in the winning run on four pitches in a game with an announced attendance of just over 4,000 fans. Along with the Rockies (1-6 record, minus-34 run differential), Marlins (0-8, minus-30) and White Sox (1-5, minus-20), the Oakland A's (1-6, minus-29) are in the absolute lowest tier of MLB teams this season.

So, yes, the Red Sox' three wins in Oakland do count. And to be honest, beating bad teams was no sure thing for the Red Sox a year ago. There's reason for positivity in that sense. But nobody's mistaking the Red Sox as currently constructed for being a World Series contender.

With that being said ... the Red Sox have another winnable series awaiting them in Anaheim.

The Angels have a winning record at 4-2, but they likewise benefited from facing one of those terrible, horrible, no good, very bad teams in the basement of MLB. After losing their first two games of the year in Baltimore by a combined score of 24-7, the Angels salvaged a 4-1 victory to close out that series before sweeping the miserable Marlins in Miami.

The Angels, like the Red Sox, have exceeded the non-existent expectations placed upon them entering the season. Though in Anaheim's case, the outlook was even drearier than Boston's. Preseason win totals had the Angels at 72.5, while the Red Sox were up at 77.5. The Angels had the fifth-lowest over-under, better than only the Nationals, White Sox, Rockies and A's.

In terms of preseason evaluations of these two teams, you have quite bad (Red Sox) to even worse (Angels). Mathemetically and scientifically, that means the Red Sox have a decent chance of winning this series and heading back to Boston with a 7-3 or perhaps even an 8-2 record.

Here's what the matchups will look like.

Angels Hottest Hitters

The Angels, as you might have heard, lost Shohei Ohtani over the winter. But they still have Mike Trout , and he's still Mike Trout.

Trout is hitting just .273 thus far in the season, but he's made the most of those six hits, with three of them soaring over fences for home runs, giving him a 1.015 OPS. Unfortunately for the Angels, all three of those homers were solo shots.

Left fielder Taylor Ward is off to the best start of all Angels, as he's hitting .320 with a 1.080 OPS, with two doubles and three homers. He also leads the team with eight RBIs. And in just 16 at-bats, catcher Logan O'Hoppe is batting .438 with a 1.175 OPS on the strength of a double, a triple, and three walks.

In terms of hitters who are decidedly not hot, Anthony Rendon -- who only kinda-sorta likes baseball -- is 0-for-19 on the season.

Red Sox Hottest Hitters

The lone Red Sox batter with an OPS over 1.000 is Tyler O'Neill , thanks to his two solo home runs in 18 at-bats and his team-high five walks. Jarren Duran raised his average from .125 to a team-high .393 with his preposterous 9-for-12 finish at the plate in Oakland.

Catchers Connor Wong and Reese McGuire are each hitting .333 on the young season, while Rafael Devers -- despite a homer and an excuse-me double through a vacated left side of the infield -- is hitting just .217 with a .715 OPS thus far.

Red Sox-Angels Pitching Matchups

Friday, 9:38 pm. ET: Kutter Crawford vs. Griffin Canning

Kutter Crawford was solid in his 2024 debut, allowing just one unearned run over six innings in Seattle, striking out seven batters and walking one. The Red Sox lost that game, 4-3, in 10 innings.

Griffin Canning wasn't quite as sharp in his first start of the year, as he allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits in Baltimore, striking out just two batters while walking one. Canning went 7-8 with a 4.32 ERA last year.

Saturday, 9:38 p.m. ET: Garrett Whitlock vs. Reid Detmers

Garrett Whitlock gave the Red Sox five strong innings in the series finale in Seattle, allowing one run in five innings of work in a 5-1 victory. He struck out eight batters without walking anybody.

Reid Detmers was the starter for the Angels' lone win in Baltimore, as he also allowed one run in five innings. He struck out seven hitters but did issue three walks.

Sunday, 4:07 p.m.: Tanner Houck vs. Chase Silseth

Tanner Houck got the start to begin Boston's series in Oakland and shut down the A's for six shutout innings. He allowed just three hits while striking out 10 and not walking anybody.

Chase Silseth got roughed up in his three innings of work in Miami, when he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five Marlins. He left the game with the Angels trailing 4-1 through three innings, though they rallied for a 7-4 win.

Collectively, Red Sox starters have a 1.89 ERA, which ranks third-best in baseball. That's thanks in large part to facing the A's, yes, but also to the work of the bottom three starters in Crawfrod, Whitlock and Houck.

Red Sox-Angels Bullpen Matchup

Raise your hand if you had the Red Sox' bullpen leading the majors in bullpen ERA at any point this season. Anyone?

The Red Sox are currently tied for that honor with the Tigers, as their bullpen arms have allowed just three earned runs over 26.1 innings thus far.

Chris Martin has been the best of the bunch, as the 6-foot-8 righty has been untouchable this season. He's allowed four hits without allowing any walks in his four innings, striking out five batters and recording a pair of holds. He is, quite simply, nasty.

Four other Red Sox relievers have 0.00 ERAs in multiple outings: Greg Weissert , Justin Slaten , Kenley Jansen and Josh Winckowski .

Angels relievers have posted a 5.11 ERA in their 24.2 innings of work, allowing 27 base runners (17 hits, 10 walks) while striking out 16 in that span. Carlos Estevez has locked down two saves with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Matt Moore has also pitched two scoreless innings, while Jose Soriano has three scoreless innings under his belt.

Guillermo Zuniga has a save but has allowed three earned runs in his five innings of work, while Luis Garcia (36.00 ERA, 5.000 WHIP), Jose Cisnero (9.00 ERA, 2.000 WHIP), Jose Suarez (5.40 ERA, 1.200 WHIP) are off to some tough starts.
