Cottage Field Stables

Welcome To Cottage Field Stables

A state of the art training establishment set in rural herefordshire., racing news.

"Tom is the consummate, old school horseman. He lives and breathes his horses. And a quick look round his training facilities shows that no expense has been spared making sure his horses have the best possible opportunity of achieving their full potential. I have never met a more dedicated individual."

- Charlie Brooks, Castle Barn

"I have known Tom for over twenty five years, initially during his time riding in Point-to-Points and schooling young horses in the hunting field. Tom is a natural horseman, quiet, patient, and with very good hands - a rarity in this modern age. It is these attributes which lend him to breaking-in young horses and working with horses which have acquired awkward traits whilst in training. Unfortunately people like Tom are few and far between. The breaking-in process can be stressful to a young horse, and no better place can be found than the quiet, relaxed and peaceful situation at Cottage Field Stables."

- Christopher Sweeting, Conduit Farm Stud

“Tom Lacey broke in twenty yearlings for me this autumn and did an excellent job. I would recommend him to anyone.”

- Ralph Beckett, Kimpton Down Stables

"I asked Tom to help and guide me with my mare who had lost confidence with her jumping. Cloudy Spirit soon became Tom’s first winner under rules, leaving her problems behind her. Tom is great fun to go racing with and we have a genuine feeling that training with Tom is great value for money and of the highest quality."

- Norma Harris, Worcestershire

"Tom's very focused and dedicated approach to the well-being and training of the horses individually in his care is very impressive. The new yard and facilities have been thoughtfully and strategically laid out and with Tom living onsite he is always available to check the horses himself throughout the day and night. Tom is an excellent communicator and always has time for his owners."

- Geoff Lloyd, Worcestershire

Meet Tom Lacey The Jockey Club Podcast

Listen to the podcast on below:

Tom served his apprenticeship breaking-in and schooling young horses under the legendary Captain Charles Radclyffe. He worked as a pupil assistant trainer in two prominent National Hunt stables, and rode successfully in Point-to-Points, having twenty-seven winners. He then progressed to become Head Lad for one of the country's leading flat trainers. Tom's combined experiences have taught him not only the hard realities of the racing world, but shown him the advantages achieved by correct schooling at any point of a horse's working life. Repeatedly, he has found that the dedicated application and refining of traditional methods brings definitive results: Improved muscle tone from an exclusive diet of top quality feeds and concentrated exercise. Guaranteed elimination of the horses' tendency to be on their forehand by patient long-reining and schooling.

The School for Winners

Cottage Field Stables is set in rural Herefordshire. We have some of the finest facilities in the country and the team consists of top class riders - of paramount importance in training winners. Tom is very conscious of the costs incurred on race days and doesn’t believe in running horses for the sake of it. He prides himself on only running horses with a realistic chance of winning. Statistically, horses trained by Tom are seldom out of the first four places.

Aqueduct - Sunday 28th April 2024

MAMA'S DREAM was well held in fourth over a mile here last time, but that was a much stronger event and he might capitalise on this lower level to get off the mark. Alpha Sonny and newcomer Stanley Rough could also get involved.

Top Tip: Mama's Dream (6) Watch out for: Alpha Sonny (4)

MUDVILLE NINE struck by just over two lengths over track and trip last month and he can follow up. Morning Cup and Moving Pictures are also worthy of consideration.

Top Tip: Mudville Nine (1) Watch out for: Morning Cup (2)

BENDOOG recorded a fair speed figure when scoring by a head over a mile here last time and he could be the one to beat again. Leading Contender and Lord Captain are others to note.

Top Tip: Bendoog (1) Watch out for: Leading Contender (2)

LITTLE LUCA was a comfortable three-length victor earlier in the month and he could prove very tough to beat. Amundson and Writer's Regret head the dangers.

Top Tip: Little Luca (2) Watch out for: Amundson (1)

EVERLYS GIRL's smooth victory over C&D looks by far the best form on offer in this contest, so she can record a double. Timed Out and Peachy Weachy could follow her home.

Top Tip: Everlys Girl (3) Watch out for: Timed Out (4)

LIVING MAGIC was put in her place at Grade 2 level at Keeneland on her latest outing, but this looks like a much more suitable assignment and she can get back to winning ways. Miss Mottley and Youknownothing could also have a say.

Top Tip: Living Magic (5) Watch out for: Miss Mottley (4)

NOTAH has been in the top three on each of his last four starts and he can be rewarded for his consistency in this contest. G Munning and Golden Reign also merit consideration.

Top Tip: Notah (2) Watch out for: G Munning (5)

This represents a considerable drop in grade for MISCHIEVOUS ANGEL, which can help him regain the winning thread. Upside Potential and Yarrow aren't out of it either.

Top Tip: Mischievous Angel (10) Watch out for: Upside Potential (6)

THE PADDOCK PASTOR made a highly encouraging start to his career when accounting for his nearest rival by over two lengths and with the likelihood of plenty more to come, he looks the one to beat. October Bliss and Indian Mischief won't make it easy, though.

Top Tip: The Paddock Pastor (1) Watch out for: October Bliss (3)

Brian Ellison is interviewed

Brian Ellison Stable Tour: Guide to the 2020-21 team including Definitly Red

Definitly Red heads to the Charlie Hall at Wetherby and Mark Howard got the lowdown on Brian Ellison's stable stalwart and the rest of his team.

BARON DE MIDLETON (IRE) 7 b g Brian Boru – Present Climate (IRE)

A winning Irish pointer, he is a lovely horse who did well over hurdles last season winning at Doncaster and Sedgefield. He was then unlucky not to win again at Newcastle when falling at the second last. He has OK afterwards and has schooled well over fences. I think he will make a very nice chaser and he made a pleasing start when fifth at Carlisle on Thursday.

BORDEAUX BILL (IRE) 9 b g Craigsteel – Laura Croft (IRE)

Won well on his reappearance at Carlisle last season but unfortunately banged his knee in the process and missed the remainder of the campaign. We had hoped to get him back in action in the spring but then the season was cut short. He is in good form and the intention is to take him back to Carlisle (1st November) for the same handicap hurdle. We will then go back over fences with him. Two and a half miles plus is his trip because he stays well.

CHATEAU MARMONT (IRE) 7 b g Flemensfirth (USA) – Sliabh Geal Gcua (IRE)

Missed the whole of last season but all being well he will be back in action around Christmas time. He ran well in a couple of bumpers at Musselburgh and Newcastle the previous season and we will start him off in a two miles novice hurdle.

CORMIER (IRE) 4 b g Born To Sea (IRE) – Scotch Bonnet (IRE)

He has done well both on the Flat and over jumps since joining us this year. A dual winner at Catterick on the Flat during the summer, he also ran well in defeat at Ayr in September and his rating has risen from 50 to 70. He then did it very well over hurdles at Uttoxeter and it wasn’t a surprise. Despite the fact he pulled up on his hurdles debut at Market Rasen in July, his jockey felt he had gone lame and therefore didn’t give his running. He runs at Fakenham on Friday and I hope he will continue to progress.

Definitly Red wins the Charlie Hall

DEFINITLY RED (IRE) 11 ch g Definite Article – The Red Wench (IRE)

He is in great form having schooled brilliantly on Monday morning. The plan is for him to run in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby (31st October) for the fourth time – a race he won a couple of years ago. He ran some very good races once again last season winning a Listed chase at Kelso and finishing fourth in the Becher Chase at Aintree. We haven’t decided where he will go after Wetherby but it is possible the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase at Aintree could be on his agenda again. He has already won that twice. Eleven now, we will see how he runs there before making any further plans.

EL JEFE (IRE) 3 b g Born To Sea (IRE) – Ros Mountain (IRE)

Still a maiden on the Flat, he well at Redcar this month finishing a close second. We haven’t schooled him yet but there is every chance he will go juvenile hurdling this season. He has got plenty of size and stays well so I don’t see why he won’t make a hurdler.

FAIR STAR (IRE) 4 b g Sea The Stars (IRE) – Night Fairy (IRE)

He is a nice horse who won a junior bumper at Market Rasen on his debut before running very well in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham on New Year’s day. Beaten around four lengths in fifth, the ground was softer than ideal that day, too. Twice a winner at Wolverhampton since, he has been held up by niggly problems since but the intention is to send him hurdling this season. He has grown since his last run and is a good horse who appreciates decent ground.

Forest Bihan - heading back to Old Roan

FOREST BIHAN (FR) 9 ch g Forestier (FR) – Katell Bihan (FR)

Absent since winning the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase at Aintree a year ago, he suffered an injury during the race hence he missed the rest of the season. He is back in good form now though and schooled well under Brian (Hughes) this week. The plan is for him to run in the Old Roan Chase once again a week on Sunday. We haven’t been able to get a prep run in this year but he is very well at home. Two or two and a half miles is his trip.

KEARNEY HILL (IRE) 5 b g Dylan Thomas (IRE) – Sunny Glen (IRE)

A tough honest horse who loves a battle, he did well in bumpers last season winning twice at Musselburgh and Doncaster. Runner-up in one of his two Irish points before we bought him, he jumps well and I am very pleased with him. Physically, he has done well since last season and will start off in a two and a half miles novice hurdle at Carlisle (1st November).

KISS MY FACE 3 b g Nathaniel (IRE) – Bridle Belle

We have some promising three year olds who will run in bumpers this season and they include this gelding. His homework has been good and he will make his debut in a junior bumper at Market Rasen on Saturday, a race we won last year with Fair Star.

Nietzsche is a 20/1 winner of the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle

NIETZSCHE 7 ch g Poet’s Voice – Ganga (IRE)

He has been a grand horse for us under both codes winning the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham a couple of years ago. Despite the fact he has been running creditably on the Flat this summer, including at Nottingham last month, he has been going through the motions a bit. He will therefore go to Wetherby (30th October) for a Listed two and a half miles handicap chase later this month.

SAM’S ADVENTURE 8 b g Black Sam Bellamy (IRE) – My Adventure (IRE)

Progressive over fences last season, he was runner-up three times before winning a valuable novices’ handicap chase at Uttoxeter in March. He has done well during the summer and will reappear in the Cumberland Handicap Chase at Carlisle (1st November). His mark looks fair and his main target is the Welsh National at Chepstow because he loves deep ground.

SNOOKERED (IRE) 6 b g Born To Sea (IRE) – Secret Quest

Enjoyed a very good season over hurdles winning four times and a jumpers’ bumper at Newcastle in February. He also won on the Flat at Catterick this summer. Third on his chasing debut at Sedgefield this month, he needed the experience that day and has improved since. Although he lacks a bit of scope, I hope he will make his mark over fences. We will step him up in trip back and he will go back to Sedgefield on Sunday for another beginners’ chase.

SWAFFHAM BULBECK (IRE) 6 b g Jeremy (USA) – Ballygologue (IRE)

Joined us during the summer and won since over hurdles at Sedgefield. We have been schooling him over fences and he has been electric. We have given him a couple of entries this weekend at Market Rasen (Saturday) and Sedgefield (Sunday).

THE KING OF MAY (FR) 6 b g High Rock (IRE) – Waltzingl (IRE)

He is a very nice horse who did well over fences last season winning two out of three. Rated 134, he came back in a bit later than some of the others but will be in action next month or early December. Open to more improvement, two mile handicap chases will be his target because he isn’t short of speed.

TUPELO MISSISSIPPI (IRE) 5 b g Yeats (IRE) – Misleain (IRE)

Runner-up in his only Irish point-to-point, he was progressive in bumpers last season winning twice at Newcastle. His schooling over hurdles has been great and he will join Kearney Hill in the two and a half miles novice hurdle at Carlisle (1st November). I am hoping the race will divide in to two divisions. He is a lovely horse who I like a lot.

WINDSOR AVENUE (IRE) 8 b g Winged Love (IRE) – Zaffarella (IRE)

He is in fantastic form at home and goes to Carlisle for the Listed Colin Parker Chase (1st November). Brian (Hughes) schooled him on Monday and his jumping was great. Twice a winner over fences at Sedgefield and Carlisle last season, we have operated on his wind since his last run at Haydock in January and I couldn’t be happier with him. I think the wind surgery has made a big difference.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

tom lacey stable tour

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

tom lacey stable tour

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

tom lacey stable tour

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

tom lacey stable tour

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

tom lacey stable tour

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

tom lacey stable tour

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

tom lacey stable tour

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

tom lacey stable tour

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

tom lacey stable tour

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

tom lacey stable tour

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

tom lacey stable tour

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

tom lacey stable tour

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

tom lacey stable tour

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

tom lacey stable tour

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

18 and over

Jack Channon has made a bright start to his training career after taking over the licence from his father Mick at the start of the year.

He has trained with four winners from a small team of runners on the all-weather, but the campaign begins in earnest for him with the start of the turf season at Doncaster on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Racing.

Nothing would give the rookie trainer great pleasure than emulating his father who landed the Lincoln Handicap with Johan 12 months ago and he has a live contender in Majestic who helped sign off Channon senior’s illustrious career in great style when triumphant in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket last September.

“I think I’ve got a lovely bunch of horses and fingers crossed all goes well,” Jack said. “It wouldn’t be a bad start if Majestic could win the Lincoln, he is ready to go and we will give it our best shot.”

Jack kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his main hopes in his maiden season.

Form profile

Winner of seven of his 30 starts and currently rated 108. Finished third, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Anmaat in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock (1m 2 1/2f) last August when last seen out.

Trainer says

Certain Lad is a good old horse for Dad and now me and he has had a few issues over the last couple of years, but he has had a real clean preparation this year. He is working really well, and his aim will be the Huxley Stakes at Chester in May. He finished second when making his reappearance in that race last year and this time we should be going in there a little less leg tired, and I am hoping he can run well there again. He’s a good horse and he will be running in some good races and is good horse to have around.

Chairmanoftheboard (IRE)

  • Breeding: Slade Power (IRE) - Bound Copy (USA) (Street Cry (IRE))
  • Next Race: Goodwood, 03 May 2024 14:05
  • Form: 2309-82

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of four of his 31 starts and currently rated 89. Finished sixth, beaten nine and a half lengths, to Tanmaawwy in a handicap at Ffos Las (6f) last August off a mark of 91 when last seen in action.

He is another stable stalwart, and he has had a few issues but is another who has had a great preparation and we aim to run him, if the ground is on the soft side of good, at the Lincoln meeting on Sunday. Hopefully, he will be competing in those Saturday handicaps all summer. He has finished fourth in a Stewards’ Cup and, hopefully, he can get back to that sort of level.

Easter Icon (GB)

  • 5-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Sixties Icon (UK) - Vive Ma Fille (GER) (Doyen (IRE))
  • Trained by: G Brown
  • Last Race: Chepstow, 26 Apr 2024 19:10
  • Result: UnseatedRider/11, mid-division, mistake and unseated rider 4 out

tom lacey stable tour

No wins from 7 starts and currently rated 52. Finished fourth, beaten five and a quarter lengths, to Bird For Life in a handicap at Wolverhampton (2m 1/2f) in October off a mark of 53.

He is a nice Sixties Icon gelding. He was a weak two-year-old and three-year-old and has just started to strengthen up. I am hoping he can start to move through the rating band. I am very happy with the way he is training, and he will probably start his campaign this week over two miles on the all-weather, but I think he could be a better horse on the turf.

Hiromichi (FR)

  • 6-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Dabirsim (FR) - Pachelbelle (FR) (Anabaa (USA))
  • Last Race: Ripon, 27 Apr 2024 17:15
  • Result: Won/7, handy in 2nd, pushed along over 2f out, ridden and led over 1f out, edged right inside last, stayed on

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of three of his 12 starts and currently rated 69. Finished seventh, beaten three and three quarter lengths, to Plumette in a handicap at Wolverhampton (7f) in February off his current mark.

He is a lovely horse, and he had his first run back at Wolverhampton in February. It didn’t go to plan as he missed the break and was a little bit ring rusty, but he is due to run on Monday and I think he will put up a good showing. He will be a better horse when he gets back on the turf, and he can go through the handicaps grade this year and is a good horse to have about.

Indian Creak (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Camacho (UK) - Ushindi (IRE) (Montjeu (IRE))
  • Form: 11590-0

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of five of his 41 starts and currently rated 81. Gained his last success at Windsor (6f) last June when beating Danzeno two and a half lengths off a mark of 85.

He is a grand old horse, and he always wins his races at the likes of Windsor and Goodwood. He is a cracking little sprinter when he gets some cut in the ground and I am hoping he can win some nice races for us. He seems in great form.

Ingra Tor (IRE)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Churchill (IRE) - Kassia (IRE) (Acclamation (UK))
  • Next Race: Southwell, 28 Apr 2024 16:50

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 88. Finished fourth, beaten a length and three quarters, to Dubai Station on his reappearance in a handicap at Wolverhampton (6f) in March off his current mark.

He has been a bit of enigma as we know he is very good, but he hasn’t quite reached the heights we wanted him too after his fantastic performance at the Craven meeting last year. I thought he made a very encouraging return at Wolverhampton the other day where he missed the break and raced on the wrong part of the track. He needs good to firm ground and if all falls right there is a really big handicap in him this year. Six furlongs is his trip.
  • Breeding: Zoffany (IRE) - Sandreamer (IRE) (Oasis Dream (UK))
  • Last Race: Doncaster, 23 Mar 2024 15:35

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of seven of his 20 starts and currently rated 103. Made a winning debut for the West Ilsley team when beating Saleymm a length and a quarter in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster last year off a mark of 102.

Johan was obviously the Lincoln winner last year and he has a few little issues and had a minor setback about February time. It meant we weren’t going to have him ready for the Lincoln, but he is fine and back in full work. I am hopeful you will see him in some of the big handicaps this year. He is a great horse to have around and there is a big one in him on his day.

Majestic (IRE)

  • 6-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Conduit (IRE) - Grevillea (IRE) (Admiralofthefleet (USA))
  • Next Race: Newmarket, 04 May 2024 14:40
  • Form: 24044-5

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 93. Ended last season with a length and a quarter victory from Bell Rock in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket (1m 1f) last September off a mark of 86.

He is in great form, and I am chuffed with him. I think he is a well handicapped horse and I hope we can land another big pot before we move up to bigger and better things. He is working really well, and we are very happy. He has done everything at home, and we are ready to go.

  • 7-y-o; chestnut mare
  • Breeding: Nathaniel (IRE) - Solita (USA) (Thunder Gulch (USA))
  • Trained by: Jack Channon
  • Last Race: Newmarket, 19 Aug 2023 15:45
  • Result: 5/11, towards rear, ridden and headway over 1f out, kept on same pace

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of three of her 41 starts and currently rated 81. Gained her last win at Newmarket (1m 6f) last August when beating Australian Angel two and a half lengths off a mark of 78.

She has been a great filly and always pays for herself in prize money. She can be a bit of bridesmaid, but she needs top of the ground and a mlle and six is probably her best trip. She will run plenty of times through the year and if she can win one or two races we will be delighted.

Three Year Olds

She is a half-sister to Certain Lad and very nice. She has been working well and will be ready to run over a mile and a quarter when the turf starts.

She is nice filly who will be ready to go a mile and a quarter in May time.

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of her 7 starts and currently rated 99. Improved with every run last season and ended her campaign with a half-length victory from Keep In Touch in a Listed Fillies’ contest at Newmarket (1m) last October.

She is a very good filly, and she goes for the 1000 Guineas. Whether she is quite good enough to mix it at the top table we don’t know but we will see if she is. All of her training in the spring has been based around May 7th and she is on course for the Guineas as we stand. We are very happy with her and the intention is to go straight there.

Ferrous (IRE)

  • 4-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Dark Angel (IRE) - Grizzel (IRE) (Kodiac (UK))
  • Next Race: Newmarket, 04 May 2024 13:45
  • Form: 3159-11

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 83. Finished runner-up, beaten a nose, to Yorkshire in a novice event on his reappearance at Southwell (6f) this month.

He ran a cracker the other night at Southwell and only go caught on the line. He has been given a good opening mark and we will probably look at the six furlong three-year-old handicaps and go for the one at the Craven meeting which we won with Ingra Tor last year. Hopefully, he can go through the grades and be a very nice horse.

Flash Bardot (GB)

  • Breeding: Sixties Icon (UK) - Bridie Ffrench (UK) (Bahamian Bounty (UK))
  • Last Race: Doncaster, 27 Apr 2024 19:10
  • Result: Won/7, in rear, headway near side 2f out, shaken up to lead approaching final furlong, pushed out

tom lacey stable tour

Placed in three of her 4 starts and currently rated 71. Finished third, beaten a length to Duke Of Oxford, in a novice event at Chelmsford (1m 2f) latest start.

She has been a bit of a bridesmaid this winter but she is a nice filly and I think she will be a better filly when we get on the turf. She’s proven she stays a mile and a quarter, and she could stay a bit further. She won’t be far off being in the winner’s enclosure and she is a nice filly.

Lexington Hero (GB)

Winner of one of his 4 starts and currently rated 72. Finished runner-up, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Mirabella Bay on his latest outing in a handicap at Wolverhampton (1m 4f) in March off his current mark.

“He is a lovely horse and he won for me earlier in the year and has had a couple of seconds. He is having a little bit of a break before we start a turf campaign with him, and I think he will be a nice stayer going forward.

Metal Merchant (IRE)

  • Breeding: Make Believe (UK) - Whipped (IRE) (Whipper (USA))
  • Form: 56210-1

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently 90. Finished last of seven, beaten only four and three quarter lengths, to Brave Emperor in a conditions event at Kempton (1m) in March.

He is a very nice horse, and we ran him in a conditions race at Kempton and ran a belter even though he finished last. They went a bit slow in that race and then just sprinted but he will have come on massively for that run, I think a stiff mile on the turf or a mile and a quarter will be his trip and we will look at something like the Esher Cup for him next. I think he will be a Saturday horse and run in some nice handicaps.

Milteye (GB)

  • Breeding: Cable Bay (IRE) - Fondie (IRE) (Oasis Dream (UK))
  • Trained by: E J O'Grady
  • Last Race: Tipperary, 25 Apr 2024 19:05
  • Result: ?/0,

Finished runner-up, beaten four and a quarter lengths, to Bodorgan in a novice event at Newmarket in October.

He is a nice horse and he finished second at the backend of last year at Newmarket. He is ready to go and not far off running. He will run in a couple of novices before we get a handicap mark but he is an exciting horse for the summer.

Miss Attitude (GB)

  • Breeding: Cityscape (UK) - Rebecca Romero (UK) (Exceed and Excel (AUS))
  • Last Race: Newmarket, 07 Oct 2022 13:50
  • Result: 9/11, towards rear, pushed along halfway, never on terms

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of her 8 starts and currently rated 82. Gained her last success when beating Felix Natalis two and a half lengths in a nursery at Newbury (5f) last August off a mark of 71.

She is a very nice filly, and she was a big filly as a two-year-old and very weak. She is a bigger stronger filly this year and I think she is very quick. I think she will stretch to six furlongs, but we are probably going to start off over five. I think she is a high-class filly and I hope she can go through the grades.
  • Breeding: Charm Spirit (IRE) - Fiumicino (UK) (Danehill Dancer (IRE))
  • Trained by: L Bailey
  • Last Race: Beverley, 25 Apr 2024 17:05
  • Result: 6/7, wore hood to post, badly bumped start and rider unbalanced, soon prominent out wide, led inside final mile, pushed along over 2f out, ridden and headed over 1f out, weakened final furlong

tom lacey stable tour

Placed in three of his 5 starts and currently rated 75. Finished third, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Urban Outlook in a maiden at Lingfield (1m 2f) in March.

He is a nice horse and he got ironed out in a couple of novices’ this year, but I think he will be a good horse on the turf. We have had him gelded and I think that will have helped him mentally. He is a winner waiting to happen and we will go into handicaps and see what we can do.

Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 62. Off the mark in a handicap at Chelmsford (6f) in February when beating South Dakota Sioux three quarters of a length off a mark of 60.

She was my first winner, and I was very pleased with her. We ran her over six last time and she gave us the impression she wants stepping up in trip. Hopefully, she can win races through the summer for us.

Rathgar (GB)

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 83. Off the mark in a novice event at Goodwood (1m 1f) last October when beating Ramensky two and a half lengths.

He is a nice horse and a staying colt. We will start him off in a nice mile and a quarter/mile and a half handicap this year and I am hoping he is another who can go through the grades.

Tiriac (GB)

  • Breeding: Sixties Icon (UK) - Rough Courte (IRE) (Clodovil (IRE))

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 83. Off the mark with a five-length victory from Talha in a maiden at Doncaster (6f) in November.

He is another nice colt that won on his final start at two. He is a six/seven-furlong horse and he is on a nice mark. We will see where we go from there.

Tomahawk King (IRE)

  • Breeding: Camacho (UK) - Amaany (UK) (Teofilo (IRE))
  • Trained by: Michael Fenton
  • Next Race: Naas, 29 Apr 2024 20:20

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of one of his 5 starts and currently rated 74. Finished third, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Just Bring It in a handicap at Kempton (1m) in March off a mark of 75.

He ran two nice races on the all-weather but he has been gelded and I think he will be better on the turf. He could be a nice horse through the summer.

Woodstock (GB)

  • Breeding: Sixties Icon (UK) - Isabella Bird (UK) (Invincible Spirit (IRE))
  • Trained by: Mrs R Carr
  • Next Race: Southwell, 28 Apr 2024 17:25

tom lacey stable tour

Winner of two of his 3 starts and currently rated 80. Off the mark in a maiden at Chelmsford (1m) in February when beating Margaret’s Fuchsia three and a half lengths and followed up with a length and three quarter success from Wadacre Gomez in a novice event at Kempton (1m) in March.

Woodstock has done well and won two races and finished second. We will plot a handicap course with him and go from there.

Two Year Olds

  • 2 b c Calyx - Shanghai Rose
He is a lovely colt by Calyx and a big horse, but he does everything nice. He will probably be a backend six or seven furlong horse.
  • 2 b c Sixties Icon - Estrellada
He is a belter and reminds me of Legend Of Xanadu. I think he will be a six-furlong horse but will be ready to run over five. He is a typical Sixties Icon and a real little dinger - I am really happy with him.
  • 2 b c Inns of Court - Abiquio Unraced.
I think he will be a six-furlong colt but he is doing everything very well.
  • 2 b c Soldier’s Call - La Perla
He is pretty sharp and will probably be ready to rock and roll over five furlongs.
  • 2 b c Calyx - Gallic Star
He is a nice colt and is going to be one over seven furlongs. He is doing everything really well.
  • 2 b c Caravaggio - Sweet Dreams Baby
He is a lovely colt and has done everything we have asked of him. I think he will be starting off over six furlongs.

Miss Mach One

  • 2 b f Invincible Spirit - Promised Money
She is very quick and is likely to be one of my first two-year-old runners. She looks very sharp.

Saigon Dream

  • 2 b c Oasis Dream - Gracious Diana
He is a good-looking horse and working very nicely - I’m happy with him.
  • 2 b c Advertise - South Bay
I like the Advertises I have got and he looks pretty quick. He will be five or six furlongs May time.
  • 2 b f Advertise - Swingout Sister
We paid a lot of money for her, but she is a very nice filly. I would say she would be ready to go over five or six and she looks quite smart.
  • 2 ch f Bated Breath - The Thrill Is Gone
She is a nice filly, and she is bred to be quick, She came in a little bit late but is doing really nice and I am very happy with her.
  • 2 b f Profitable - Jillnextdoor
She is a nice filly, and she hasn't been with us long but she is doing well. She looks a nice filly
  • 2 b f Harry’s Angel - Never Lose
She is a nice filly who shows me a lot of speed but may need a little more time. The Harry’s Angels seem to come to hand as they get a little bit older
  • 2 b c Sixties Icon - Rebecca Romero
He is a half-brother to Miss Attitude and quick. He is a nice horse and going to be one over six furlongs. He won’t be too far away from running.
  • 2 b c Ulysses - Fervid
For a Ulysses, he shows me a lot of speed and he will be ready to rock and roll over five and six furlongs and is quite nice.
