Hřensko and its gorges
Discover the magical world of hřensko and its gorges.
You can enhance your trip to the fabulous region of Bohemian Switzerland with a boat trip through the canyon of the crystal-clear Kamenice River, which is nestled between steep cliff walls soaring up to 150 metres. You can explore three different gorges here. Two legs of the journey can be completed only by boat. A boatman with a bargepole will lead you first through Divoká soutěska (meaning the Wild Gorge), where he will introduce you to the lively – even though petrified – inhabitants of the surrounding walls, and then to Edmundova soutěska (Edmund’s Gorge), where upon request he will release a waterfall for you!

A Weekend in Hrensko: The Ultimate 2 Day Hrensko Itinerary
Are you looking to spend a weekend in Hrensko but no clue where to start? Do you want to see as much of this beautiful area as possible in the mere time span of 2 days? Do you also want to know if there are any other beautiful places nearby that you should visit? Don’t worry then, Hrensko is a tiny village where you can easily spend 2 amazing days and even have time left to explore Saxony, right across the border in Germany . There are beautiful forest trails next to a cobbling river, a place that on first sight looks like a haunted house and a beautiful national park all within 30 minutes driving of each other. This is the perfect itinerary for anyone who wants to fully enjoy this area and have some spare time left to relax.
Hrensko is a small town in the Czech Republic and is located right across the border with Germany . And when I say small, I really mean it. Can you believe that only 275 people actually live in Hrensko? But this also means peace and quiet. Especially cause Hrensko is not on a lot of tourists radar ! Imagine a beautiful morning walk through what pretty much looks like an enchanted forest and there is literally no one else around for hours! Sounds pretty good right?
Then are you ready to find out how to spend an amazing weekend in Hrensko?
📖 CURIOUS FOR MORE UNIQUE PLACES IN EUROPE? MAKE SURE TO READ MY GUIDE ON THE 28 HIDDEN GEMS IN EUROPE THAT I VISITED MYSELF!
Day 1: Edmund’s Wild Gorge, Old Gasworks House, Saxon Switzerland National Park
Stop 1: edmund’s wild gorge.
Are you ready to be blown away by this beautiful piece of nature? I am not exaggerating when I say a hike of 30 minutes took us twice as long simply because we stopped every 5 minutes to look around and take in the amazing views around us!
The most important thing to know about the Edmund’s Wild Gorge trail is that during winter time you can’t go on a boat ride. This basically means that you can’t do the trail in a loop. You either start on the West side, walk to one boathouse and return and then walk to the East side to see the other part of the trail. During Spring, Summer and Fall both boathouses are connected by a short boat ride . It’s not possible to go from one boathouse to the other on foot .
We decided to take the Eastern trail and even that we couldn’t go on a boat ride it was still amazing! The first part of the hike can be a little muddy but after 5 minutes you’ll be walking through the forest and in between the gorges.
If you don’t want to stay in Hrensko itself I strongly advice you to stay at Forester Park Resort (U Forta). It’s located in the middle of nature, it’s cheap, they serve good breakfast AND it’s 2 minutes walking to both trails!
Stop 2 : Old Gasworks House
Would you believe me if I told you that this Old Gasworks House in Hrensko is actually a hotel ? Like, how amazing would it be to actually stay here? And it’s not even that expensive! Just €90/night ! There is definitely something eery about this stone inn from 1905 . Looking at the top window it even looks like an eye is peeping out of the house. But besides all of that it remains one of the coolest places to snap some amazing photos!
So as I said before this mystery house was originally built in 1905 and served as an industrial site for production of acetylene gas which was used for lighting. It was built of hand-carved sandstone blocks in the style of a medieval castle. But as electrification proceeded the production was shut down and the building was left abandoned. It has since then been resold twice. Once with false promises of restoring it to it’s former glory (that did not work out). And a second time with the promise to renovate it in it’s original style by only using a 100 year old photo . I think it worked out really well!
Stop 3: Saxon Switzerland National Park
I am going to be completely honest with you here. One afternoon in this beautiful National park is NOT ENOUGH!!! I could have walked here for hours and hours . So if you can squeeze in an extra day on this trip go for it! There are plenty of different hikes and they will all leave you speechless at the end. And I am not just talking about being completely out of breath because of the hike up (yeah, that happened), but especially because of the amazing 360° views you will be rewarded with!
We opted for the Himmelsleiter trail (not intentionally but oh well :D). The fastest way to reach this viewpoint is to park your car close to Pension Felsenmühle and hike up the road leading into the National Park. Make sure to map your hike out from before on an offline map cause there is no cell service here! But for your convenience I will try to explain it as well as possible!
Once you’ve entered the National Park walk until the first cross roads and turn right. From here you’ll hike up a little until you reach another cross roads. When you look to the right you’ll see stairs leading up in between the gorges. Go up until you reach the top and from there follow the sign that says Himmelsleiter. The last part of the hike is a little tricky. You’ll have to walk up some more stairs but these are in between the rocks and pretty small (not for the faint of heart). But I do promise you that the view on top is ABSOLUTELY worth it!
I would not advise this hike when it has frozen outside. All these steps could become really slippery and it would end up being very dangerous!
Day 2: Pravčická Archway, Knotenweg and The Bastion Bridge
Stop 1: pravčická archway.
The Pravčická Archway is the largest natural formed archway in Europe . The arch is the main symbol of the Bohemian National Park and one of the most important landmarks in the Czech Republic. We didn’t have time to visit this place during our weekend cause well, we also had to drive 8,5 hours back to Belgium . But as soon as I looked this place up I immediately regretted not visiting it. Cause did you know that they filmed several scenes here from ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”? Yeah, I can pretty much slap myself across the face for skipping it. Cause that book literally was my childhood (together with Harry Potter).
But how to get there? From Hrensko you follow the red hiking trail which is around 4km in total. You can skip the first 1,5km of hiking by taking the bus from Tři Prameny.
It is NOT allowed to stand on top of the arch . I repeat: it is NOT ALLOWED! There is a small entrance fee for visitors so make sure to bring some cash with you. The local currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech Koruna but I was always able to pay in Euro.
Stop 2: Knotenweg
You’ll find this beautiful winding road a little over the border in Germany. If you’re a photographer you have to add this place to your weekend trip. And definitely add it if you also have a drone!
You can find the exact details about this road and where to take the best photos here .
Stop 3: The Bastion Bridge
This stunning bridge is only 30 minutes driving from Hrensko and the perfect place to end your weekend! Bastei is the most popular and known rock formation in Saxony Switzerland and the Bastei and it’s famous bridge are the highlight for a lot of visitors. The jagged rocks from the Bastei are the result of water erosion over a million years ago . They offer an amazing view over the nearby mountains and the Elbe that is running down below.
The best viewpoint of The Bastion Bridge is from Ferdinandstein but make sure to also walk on the bridge itself. This wasn’t possible until 1824 when they decided to build a wooden bridge in between the rock formations. Later on this wooden bridge was replaced by a sandstone one which until this day is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
There is a main parking lot close by and parking fee starts at €3. If you’re looking for a more fancy lunch or hotel to stay you have to check out Berghotel Bastei .
That’s it for my guide on a weekend in Hrensko! It’s an amazing area that definitely deserves a visit! Don’t mind me while I am already picking out dates to head back during Spring or Summer!

Hrensko, Czechia’s hidden "nature gem"
Travel Tips For Hřensko
Hrensko is a small village located around 130 kilometers north from Prague. Hrensko borders with Germany, and has two rivers flowing through it, the Kamenice and Labe rivers. This charming village has only 275 inhabitants (approximately), and is a true gem of Czechia, filled with nature and stunning landscapes.
Hrensko is Czechia’s hidden gem and an exceptional place to visit, especially if you love being in nature, exploring, hiking, swimming and much more. Hrensko is surrounded by numerous gorges with superbly clear water, rocky walls and cliff sites, and of course fresh mountain air!
Why should you visit Hrensko in Czechia?
First place on your bucket list to visit in Hrensko, should be the Pravcicka Archway , which is a large archway formed from sandstone. It’s really amazing to visit and see this rocky construction, especially because it’s been created by nature and not by humans. Getting to the archway is rather simple; you have to hike through the forest while following the river, until you come to the peak of the mountain. Once on the top, you can enjoy the magnificent view, a cold beer and you can also grab a bite.
Another way to view the Pravcicka Archway and get a magnificent picture is from the Falcon’s Nest, which is a chateau in the same mountain area. The chateau is a rather fascinating piece of architecture, as its entire construction is part of the cliffy mountain. Something you don’t see every day! Some might wonder... how do the restaurant employees manage to get up there to work?! Whichever route they take, it sure is one interesting and unique commuting to their job.
Pravčická brána
Kamenice & edmund's gorges.
The next place you should visit is the Kamenice Gorge, which is located between Hrensko and Mezna, more towards the east. Kamenice is a rather steep gorge, full of cliffs and hiking paths, which are really worth exploring. Should you wish, you can also decide to sign up and take a guided boat tour off the gorge. Alternatively, you can hike through the trails, which could be the ideal option in the summer or early autumn, as the gorge has a rather cool climate. The Kamenice Gorge is a very serene place and an excellent destination for a family trip, for example. The gorge is located around 2 kilometers from the parking area, which makes it a rather feasible walk even for kids.
Kamenice Gorge
The next place to visit is the Edmund’s Gorge, which is very similar to the Kamenice Gorge . The gorges are located at close proximity to one another. You can embark on a guided boat trip and explore the area further. For any brave souls out there, feel free to take a nice refreshing dip in the crystal water , which however is not very warm. It measures around 14 degrees Celsius.

What to know about Schengen zone, Europe’s ‘border-free’ travel system
Schengen countries allow international travelers to move freely across borders without additional passport checks.
Europe’s “border-free” Schengen zone has added travel protections for two more countries, making it easier for more people to explore the southeastern region of the continent.
Romania and Bulgaria partially joined the Schengen area on Sunday, which means visitors who arrive by air or sea from other countries in the zone can cross their borders without an ID check. Land borders will remain subject to ID checks because of opposition led by Austria, which has long cited irregular migration as a concern when it comes to welcoming the two Eastern European states into the Schengen agreement. The move comes more than a decade after Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union.
The European Commission had previously recommended that Bulgaria and Romania be admitted to join the Schengen zone, starting in 2011 and most recently in 2023. A combination of internal problems in the two countries and opposition from other countries citing irregular migration concerns — especially after the so-called “migrant crisis” of 2015 — meant they were caught in “Schengen purgatory” until now, according to Leon Züllig, a researcher and Schengen expert at Germany’s Justus Liebig University Giessen.

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union.
After years of negotiations to join the Schengen Area , there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria, which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone.

Schengen agreement: Understand the 90/180 rule before European travel
Question: Twice a year for more than 10 years, I have been flying to Zurich, Switzerland, from LAX.
March 30, 2015
The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, Schengen consisted of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Around 3.5 million people cross an internal border each day.
Austria vetoed Romania and Bulgaria’s admission into the Schengen zone at the end of 2022 but allowed Croatia full accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Croatia in 2013.
Siegfried Muresan, a Romanian member of the European Parliament, told the Associated Press that it is “an important first step” that will benefit millions of travelers annually.
“Bulgaria and Romania have been fulfilling all criteria for joining the Schengen Area for years — we are entitled to join with the terrestrial border as well,” he said, adding that it “will offer additional arguments to the last EU member state that has been vetoing the full accession.”

Croatia set to adopt euro currency and borderless EU travel in the new year
As of Jan. 1, Croatia will use the EU’s common currency and join its borderless travel area, a milestone since gaining independence 31 years ago.
Dec. 22, 2022
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called it a “well-deserved achievement” for Romania that he said will benefit citizens who can travel more easily and will bolster the economy.
“We have a clear and firmly assumed government plan for full accession to the Schengen Area by the end of the year,” he said.
The EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, has said for more than a decade that Romania and Bulgaria both meet the technical criteria for full accession, which requires unanimous support from their partners. Both countries have agreed to implement random security screening at airports and maritime borders to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime.
“Bulgaria’s full accession to Schengen will happen by the end of 2024,” Kalin Stoyanov, Bulgaria’s interior minister, told reporters on Sunday. “We showed and continue to show to illegal migrants that they should not take the road to Europe through Bulgaria.”
EU countries wrestle with a proposed ban on Russian tourists
Northern European Union countries are calling for a broad ban on tourist visas for Russian citizens, but Germany, among other EU members, demurs.
Aug. 31, 2022
The lifting of border control is expected to facilitate operations at Bulgaria’s four international airports, which in 2023 saw nearly 11 million passengers, according to official data.
The airport in the capital, Sofia, serves as the biggest hub for Schengen flights, which constitute 70% of all flights, airport representatives said.
While the eased regulations are expected to positively impact the tourism sector, members of the European Parliament have voiced concerns about long queues at the EU’s land borders and the impact it can have on trade in the bloc’s single market, as well as the health and safety of drivers.
Truck drivers are frequently stuck in kilometers-long queues at the borders of both Romania and Bulgaria. The Union of International Carriers in Bulgaria estimates delays cost the sector tens of millions of euros each year.
Stephen McGrath and Veselin Toshkov write for the Associated Press. McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union.
After years of negotiations to join the Schengen area, there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone.
The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The lifting of border control is expected to facilitate operations at Bulgaria’s four international airports, which in 2023 saw nearly 11 million passengers, according to official data.
The airport in the capital, Sofia, serves as the biggest hub for Schengen flights which constitute 70% of all flights, airport representatives said.
McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.

Credit Card Swipe Fees Are Going Down. Are Points Going With Them?
A new agreement by Visa and Mastercard to reduce fees charged to merchants may drain the lucrative rewards that grant free travel to many credit card users.
By Elaine Glusac
Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.
On Tuesday, the largest credit card companies in the United States reached an agreement with merchants to reduce the so-called swipe fees retailers pay for accepting credit card payments, potentially saving the retailers $30 billion.
These fees also help fund the credit card rewards programs that many travelers redeem for things like free flights and hotel stays, leading points hawks to wonder: Are loyalty programs at risk?
Here’s what we know so far about the changes.
What are the terms of the deal?
Last year, credit card payments generated an estimated $72 billion in fees paid by merchants, which are generally passed along to customers in the form of higher prices. For nearly 20 years, merchants have been seeking reductions in the fees they pay Visa and Mastercard for handling transactions where the cards are used.
The proposed settlement , awaiting approval in a federal court, reduces and caps those fees for five years. It would also allow merchants to potentially charge consumers more based on the card they pay with. For example, a person paying with a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which costs $550 a year, could be charged more than someone paying with the more basic Chase Sapphire Preferred card, with an annual fee of $95.
Why does it matter?
The majority of the fees collected go back to the banks that issue the credit cards. Those banks have used the funds to push premium credit cards that offer loyalty points, which can be redeemed for free travel and other perks. The cards with the biggest benefits tend to be those that charge higher swipe fees.
While the reduction in the fees collected sounds small — averaging at least .07 percent — they represent an estimated $30 billion over the five-year term of the deal, which banks could try to make up by reducing points perks.
“It’s reasonable to think that,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of the Points Guy , a news site devoted to maximizing credit card points.
While he speculated that banks will be able to “find other ways to make up the difference,” he acknowledged that a points squeeze could emerge.
“Opportunities to earn probably aren’t going to flourish,” he said.
The idea that merchants could charge more to the holders of premium, perks-rich cards, which are expensive, might also deter consumers from using them. Some experts question the viability of the practice given the potential for consumer backlash.
Is the new agreement related to the Credit Card Competition Act?
The legal actions that led to the new credit card agreement date back to 2005. But the newer Credit Card Competition Act , proposed in 2023, aims to introduce more competition in the credit card payment system. By creating a cheaper alternative pipeline for processing payments, the proposed legislation is seen as a greater threat to rewards programs.
Responding to the just-announced agreement between the credit card companies and retailers, Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and the lead sponsor of the Credit Card Competition Act, released a statement urging the act’s passage.
“I fear that this deal only provides temporary concessions negotiated by a few lawyers behind closed doors,” he said in the statement.
Other experts said the agreement may ease the pressure on Congress to pass the act.
“I think it’s a way for Visa and Mastercard to show that they are making a good-faith effort to help out merchants by lowering the fees they’ve been complaining about for 20 years, and hopefully enough to let senators know they’re doing their part,” said Chris Hassan, the social media and brand manager for Upgraded Points , a website that tracks credit card benefits.
Separately, the proposed merger between Capital One and Discover, which is pending federal approval, could introduce more competition among credit cards and potentially improve rewards for holders of those cards.
What should I do now?
The points and payments systems won’t change until the agreement is approved, which is expected in late 2024 or early 2025, according to a news release from Mastercard.
But the topic should remind travelers of the reality of playing with points: The rules always change. Values tend to fall as redemption levels rise, which companies issuing these currencies are free to adjust at will.
If you have points, spend them, say experts like Sara Rathner, a travel and credit card specialist at the financial website NerdWallet . “They’re not a trophy to dust and admire.”

I grew up with older parents. I waited to have my own kid, too, and was able to buy a house and travel.
- I grew up with older parents, and it ended up being the right choice for me, too.
- In my 20s, I had time for a full social life. I also built up my career and traveled.
- When I met my husband, we had some time to settle into our marriage before we had our son.
"Why are you so much older than my friend's mom?" my son asked one day after a playdate with one of his pals. While I knew being a good decade older than many of the parents at my kid's school could lead to this question, I wasn't quite sure how to answer.
I grew up with older parents — my mom was 32 and my dad was 39 when they had me. It never occurred to me that my parents were any different from other kids' moms and dads, despite their gray hair and wrinkles.
Once I graduated from college , I began receiving invites to friends' weddings, followed shortly after that by baby shower invitations. While I felt thrilled for my friends, I also knew I was nowhere near being ready for marriage and motherhood.
I wanted to enjoy my 20s child-free
During my 20s, I wanted to focus on me. I began working long hours at the local newspaper, working my way up to a reporting gig on the nightlife beat. Single and childless , the job felt perfect for me, and it gave me a chance to hone my reporting and writing skills without worrying about how my unconventional schedule affected anyone else.
Outside work, I had a full social life . My free time was occupied with after-work happy hours, karaoke nights, and shopping excursions with my friends. And while I did spend time dating, finding a husband wasn't really on my radar until my late 20s.
Related stories
I also knew I wanted to travel as much as my limited budget would allow during my 20s, and I made regular road trips with friends as well as longer excursions around the country and abroad.
My husband and I waited to have kids once we met
When I finally met my husband , we dated for several years before marrying. And once we married, we knew we wanted to wait a few years to have kids to give ourselves time to settle into married life and enjoy our time together as a twosome.
During that time, we bought a house, traveled, and filled our spare time with concerts, parties, and quiet dinners at home. We knew that becoming parents would change our lifestyle, so we wanted to have time to enjoy the freedom of being child-free.
That time also allowed us to continue to advance in our careers and start building savings that we didn't have during our 20s. By the time we felt ready to start trying for a baby — when I was nearly 35 and my husband 37 — we felt confident that we were both as emotionally and financially prepared as possible for parenthood.
It took some time to have a child, but I'm glad we waited
But after months of negative pregnancy tests, I began to question my decision to wait to have kids . Research has found that a woman's ability to conceive after the age of 35 drops significantly. After nearly a year of trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, testing determined I had a luteal phase defect — an inability of the uterine lining to thicken enough to support a pregnancy.
With that diagnosis, my doctor prescribed hormone therapy that allowed me to get and stay pregnant with my son. And once I got pregnant, my over-35 status put me and my baby at greater risk of complications such as birth defects.
Thankfully, I had a pretty uneventful pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy baby right before my 36th birthday. As I settled into motherhood, I wondered if I would've been better equipped for the long, sleepless nights and busy days of parenting an infant if I had the energy level of a woman a decade my junior. But while I still wish I had more energy for my son, I manage well enough to be an active mom.
Though I certainly experienced some of the cons of putting off parenthood , ultimately, I'm glad I waited to become a mom. Like my own parents, I feel settled and confident in my ability to raise and provide for a child. And though our social life is different now, my husband and I don't feel like we're missing out on anything as individuals or a couple.
So when my son asked that question, I only had one answer: "I'm older because I waited until I was ready to become a mom." While that age differs for everyone, waiting worked for me.

Adani-backed indian airport retailer rebrands to ospree in quest for global shopping empire.

MTRPL will be rebranding its seven airport duty-free locations in India with the Ospree logo.
The CEO of India’s Mumbai Travel Retail Pvt Ltd (MTRPL) expects to take to the global stage now that it has a new corporate branding: Ospree. The move pulls together the company’s disparate duty-free operations at seven airports in India and will make it easier to bid for contracts globally.
The rebrand integrates all of MTRPL’s airport duty-free businesses led by Mumbai, the company’s flagship location with a growing reputation for whisky retailing; as well as Ahmedabad; Amritsar; Jaipur; Lucknow; Mangalore; and Thiruvananthapuram.
The new name, Ospree, is also easier for potential concession partners to understand in terms of both storytelling and for MTRPL to define its strategy in the global duty-free shopping arena. The name is derived from two words: the migratory osprey bird of prey that has adapted to living in all continents (except Antarctica); and spree, which describes a big shopping expedition.
MTRPL’s expansion ambitions are backed by big financial muscle. The company is owned, through joint venture, by one of India’s biggest listed conglomerates, infrastructure group Adani (with a majority share), controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani ; and Flemingo Travel Retail, a duty-free company operating in 137 locations in 26 countries through airport stores, diplomatic stores, and UN Commissary services, among others.
In the just-published Forbes 2024 Billionaires List , Gautam Adani is ranked 17 th with $84 billion, second behind Mukesh Ambani among India’s now 200-strong billionaires.

Adani’s airport unit—Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL)—also became the biggest airport operator in India in mid-2021 when it took a majority stake in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International. This has helped MTRPL’s expansion in the Indian travel retail sector; apart from Amritsar, where operations started in January 2024, the rest of the retailer’s airport locations are owned by AAHL and all seven will be rebranded Ospree in due course.
First European entry
The retailer has now won its first concession outside India with a deal to run the duty-free business at Eurotunnel’s French terminal in Coquelles near Calais in France. Eurotunnel is the operator (until 2086) of the Channel Tunnel infrastructure through which LeShuttle freight and passenger services (on cars and coaches) run between Folkestone in the U.K., and Calais. Eurotunnel was awarded its concession by the British and French governments on March 14, 1986.

Eurotunnel gave the contract to Le Marché Duty-Free, a subsidiary of MTRPL, in mid-March following an open tender process that started in September 2023. The award was made before Ospree was established so it is unlikely the name will be used when the business is handed over from the incumbent Avolta at the end of this month.
Avishek Bambii Das, CEO of MTRPL told me: “Avolta has been very helpful in every aspect of this handover and we are excited by the prospect of our first store in Europe.” It was, in fact, the Eurotunnel tender process that convinced Das that MTRPL needed a global consumer-facing brand. “We realized that the Le Marché name is great for a French project but might not work in other geographies. We needed an overall rebranding which we started in January,” said Das.
Avishek Bambii Das: “Any opportunity in an overseas location where we find the airport to be ... [+] attractive, we will be going for those bids.”
Deborah Merrens, Eurotunnel’s chief commercial officer, commented: “The reintroduction of duty-free services for passengers traveling to the U.K. has created a substantial opportunity to redesign engagement with passengers and drive sales.”
The store will cover around 800 square meters of duty-free space within the passenger terminal building, as well as around 75 square meters in the freight terminal serving the duty-free needs of lorry drivers for the first time. The concession does not include the terminal at Folkestone on the British side of the tunnel.
Other targets
So which other targets does MTRPL have in its sights? “There are bids coming up very soon but they are not yet officially announced. So it’s a little too early to talk about that. Essentially, any opportunity in an overseas location where we find the airport to be attractive we will be going for those bids,” said Das.
MTRPL is also finalizing strategic partnerships in order to develop weightier bids for some of these retail concessions. “These strategic partnerships will help us get into more geographies than we could if we were to do it alone,” Das added.
In India, where the airport business and privatizations are expanding fast , MTRPL is looking to extract more from existing locations and move into sectors like seaports where, by early May, the company will have six retail businesses in place. They will all be at Adani-run ports where the main customers will largely be staff working on commercial freight liners.
MTRPL’s growth, according to Das, has been much faster than passenger growth in the past year at close to 50%. “That’s massive and it also means that our spend per passenger (SPP) has been the highest ever,” said Das. This gives Ospree a solid platform from which to take flight.
