Day 5-7: Cycle through the Tataouine-Matmata district (several locations of "Star Wars" filming) with its zsours and ghorfas built by Berber and the area of the troglodyte culture, with its unique architecture. A Journey through Tunis to the Mountains with the Nomadic bikers of Tunis

My name is Lena (24) and I had the privilege of being part of the Nomadic bikers bike tour through Tunis and the mountains. As an avid cyclist, this experience was an adventure of a lifetime for me, and I’d like to share my perspective on this exhilarating journey.

The day began in the heart of Tunis, a city I had never visited before. The group gathered, and I could feel the excitement in the air. We started by pedaling through the bustling streets of Tunis, a stark contrast to the serene mountains we were about to conquer. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture were evident at every turn, from the ancient Medina to the magnificent Carthage Ruins. It was a great way to start the day and immerse ourselves in Tunisia’s heritage.

After a nice breakfast of delicious Tunisian homemade food we left the city behind, the real adventure began. The gradual ascent into the mountains was both challenging and rewarding. The winding roads led us higher and higher, and I marveled at the stunning scenery that unfolded before us. Olive groves, vineyards, and picturesque villages dotted the landscape, making each pedal stroke worth the effort.

Reaching vantage points in the mountains provided breathtaking views of the beautiful nature and the city of Tunis below. The contrast of blue skies against the green hills, and the city’s distant skyline created a picture-perfect moment that will stay with me forever.

Our midday break was a chance to refuel our bodies and connect with fellow participants. Sharing stories of our experiences so far, we bonded over our mutual love for cycling and adventure. The picnic lunch amid the mountains was a highlight in itself, with the fresh mountain air and delicious food enhancing the overall experience.

The afternoon brought thrilling descents that rewarded us for our morning’s efforts. The sense of freedom and speed as we raced downhill was exhilarating. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with physical challenges and incredible sights.

IAs I returned to Tunis, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This adventure bike tour allowed me to explore Tunisia in a unique and profound way. It was more than just a bike ride; it was an immersive journey through history, culture, and nature. I left with newfound friends, cherished memories, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of this region.

In conclusion, my participation in the Nomadic biking adventure cycling your from Tunis to the mountains was an unforgettable experience. It pushed my limits as a cyclist, allowed me to connect with the local culture, and left me with lasting memories. From the Berber villages of the Dahar massif…

To start this mountain bike tour in Tunisia, you’ll make an early start from the island of Djerba along the ” Roman Road ” to reach the Berber-speaking village of Chenini. After exploring the village with a local guide, you’ll head off by mountain bike to the citadel of Guermessa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then, as you pedal along, you’ll discover the ksours (ancient fortified Berber granaries). Some of these landscapes were once occupied by dinosaurs, who left their traces in the Jurassic rock layers between various fossils. Not so long ago, prehistoric man also left his mark in the area, illustrating his hunts on the walls of the region’s caves. Your mountain bike ride will also allow you to sample the traditional pastries of the towns and villages of the Dahar massif. The day continues with dinner and a musical evening around the campfire, before a night in a tent for a restorative rest.

When you wake up, you’ll be offered a typical traditional breakfast from the Tataouine region. Boosted by this, you’ll get back on your bikes and head off to a ksar, where you’ll discover dinosaur footprints on a petrified beach dating from the Jurassic era. Your journey will then take you to the ksar of Ksar Haddada, filming location for the first episodes of the Star Wars saga. Your VTT tour will then cross a canyon formed by the erosion of a wadi on the geological layers of the Dahar massif. During your excursion by VTT, you will also have the opportunity to visit a stone mill quarry. Continuing into the Jebel, you’ll discover a deposit of dinosaur bones from the Jurassic era. You will then reach the village of Oued El Khil for a visit to discover a farm and permaculture techniques. Afterwards, enjoy a dinner and a well-deserved rest on site.

In the morning of day 3, after breakfast, you will be transferred to Djerba, to your place of residence.

Our excursions and bike rides are on VTT bikes which are provided in good working order. Helmets are also provided. Each ride is supervised by one or two qualified instructors, depending on the size of your group. A briefing will be given before departure to remind you of how the mountain bike works and the safety instructions. All mountain bike outings are organised in compliance with the laws and regulations in force. Bikers undertake to comply with all safety instructions.

Tunisia Discovery, Small Group Tour

Overall, it was a good tour. I will list out the positives and will suggest some areas of improvement or things that have gone not too well. Positives: I liked the overall pace of the tour; it was just about right. Our driver Yasin was highly punctual, well-kempt and drove the vehicle carefully. He did ask us whether we are ready for the bumpy Sahara desert adventure, and we all had fun. Our tour guide Fehri is a very knowledgeable person. He was in charge of the tour, and he controlled the tour really well. The quality of English spoken by him is good, considering English would be the third language in Tunisia. The hotels at Hammamet and Tunis were top-notch, especially the one at Tunis El Mouradi, which had an excellent spread for breakfast and dinner. Negatives/ Things that could have been better: The hotels at Tozeur and Douz were sub-standard. They claim it is 4 star, but the facilities and cleanliness are not of that high standards. The A/Cs in Tozeur were too weak for the heat, and there were flies and cockroaches. The hotel room at Douz did not have any WiFi signal. Planning: We did not quite understand the planning of our itinerary. We almost had a full day available when we arrived at Hammamet. I think they could do well to cover the sightseeing spots in Tunis; because our entire first day after arrival went by relaxing at the hotel. Also, please be careful in choosing the time of the year. We did the tour at the end of May and the start of June. Tozeur and Douz were extremely hot (the late 30s to early 40s), so it is quite exhausting. As an afterthought, we could have planned our tour around October/November, when the temperatures should be more amenable. Overall, Tunisia is an upcoming country on the global tourist map and has significant potential. If you enjoy culture and history and love Mediterranean cuisine, then this could be just the right tour for you.

Highlights of Tunisia, Small Group Tour

Good tour covering key attractions in Tunisia. Could have been excellent if Tatouine (Yes, it is a real place in Tunisia and inspired George Lucas to use that name in Star Wars!) were included in the itinerary as it has very unique buildings (warehouses) that warrant a visit. There are gaps in the program especially the first day that could accommodate this attraction with some juggling.

Desert Tour Kairouan to El Jem 3D/ 2N

The tour guide was knowledgeable and on time for everything. However, the printed itinerary did not match where the guide took us or in the same order. Fortunately, the guide took us to a place not on the itinerary -- the Hotel Sidi Idriss, where the first Star Wars movie was filmed -- and that was fantastic. It was a great surprise to stop there, although it shouldn't have been a surprise and should have been on the itinerary. Also, at some points the guide, who also served as the driver, seemed like he'd done the tour a million times and was a bit bored.
