The Ithaca Experience

Cornell Botanic Gardens An extended living museum with a mature botanical garden and 100-acre arboretum. Read More

There is truth to our bumper stickers that state “Ithaca is Gorges,” but it’s more than that – it is where great minds meet the great outdoors. Explore what makes it different and start planning your own Ithaca Experience.

Ithaca Is Unique...

No matter what brings people to Ithaca, NY they are met by an energy that is unique to this place. The churning of  waterfalls  tall and small, creeks winding through lush gorges carved by glaciers, dew drops on plants immersed in the woods or the gentle lapping of  Cayuga Lake  against its shores all bring a sense of freshness and renewal to Ithaca and  Tompkins County  felt few other places.

Beyond the outdoors, however, that energy is found in the people, where great minds come from all over. Whether they are studying at Cornell University or Ithaca College, creating beautiful murals across public spaces, debating issues on The Commons, crafting creative food and beverages in our  restaurants , or making music on our streets or performance venues and  theaters , brilliance is all around in Ithaca.

What to Do in Ithaca, NY

  • Hiking and Waterfalls  – Take a hike at Buttermilk Falls or Robert Treman state parks or find the Cascadilla Gorge trail nestled in downtown Ithaca. Take the Waterfalls Challenge to see some of our 100-plus  waterfalls in Ithaca , and be sure to make time to see the 215-foot Taughannock Falls, three stories taller than Niagara Falls. In the summer, take a dip in Cayuga Lake or at the base of two of our waterfalls.
  • Food  – As a result of multi-cultural influence on our region, acclaimed hospitality school, and the high quality produce coming from local farms – Ithaca’s food and dining scene does not disappoint. Taste cuisine from around the world at the  Ithaca Farmers' Market  or find locally made cheese and seasonal ingredients featured at breweries and cideries.
  • Drink  – Enjoy a Finger Lakes wine tasting experience on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, the nation’s first wine trail. Sample a beer flight at one of our many craft breweries, including the iconic Ithaca Beer Co. or try craft cider, often dry, from one of the nine cideries within a 30-minute drive. Ithaca is also a coffee-lover’s paradise with the award-winning Gimme! Coffee’s original location on West State/MLK Jr. Street, along with many other independent coffee purveyors and roasters.
  • Farmers Markets  – The Ithaca Farmers Market operates throughout the city nearly year round, with its lakefront location open every weekend from April to December. During the warmers months, take a tour of markets in neighboring towns, including Trumansburg, Brooktondale, Dryden and Freeville.
  • Ice Cream  – It’s no surprise that the place that  invented the ice cream sundae  has no fewer than eight places dedicated to scooping ice cream, including Purity Ice Cream, which has been operating since 1936.
  • Boating  – Go boating on Cayuga Lake. Rent a kayak or standup paddleboard to feel close to the water, or learn about the Finger Lakes’ history and ecology during a Discover Cayuga Lake cruise.
  • Cornell University and Ithaca College  – Start at Cornell's Welcome Center and take in the deck overlooking Beebe Lake as well as an exhibit highlighting famous alumni. Make time to visit the Cornell Botanic Gardens and Johnson Museum of Art, and simply strolling around the university’s gorgeous campus will offer stunning architectural views. Over on South Hill, Ithaca College provides lovely views of Cayuga Lake, and a visit wouldn’t be complete without seeing the fountains and sculptures.
  • The Discovery Trail  – The Discovery Trail is a partnership of top attractions: The kid-friendly Sciencenter, the world-famous Cornell Lab of Ornithology,, the trails (and treehouse) and rehabilitating animals of the Cayuga Nature Center, the Cornell Botanic Gardens and arboretum, the amazing fossil specimens at the Museum of the Earth, the art collections at Cornell's Johnson Museum, the local artifacts at the History Center and the timely cultural events at the Tompkins Public Library.
  • Ithaca Commons  – Stroll downtown Ithaca on The Commons, a pedestrian mall that's the heart of the city's vibrant social scene, filled with boutiques, funky shops and all the food options you can think of.
  • Music  – Talented musicians have studied and collaborated in the Ithaca and Trumansburg areas for decades. Enjoy concerts,  often free concerts , with music ranging from classical to jazz, funk, and more! The historic State Theatre of Ithaca hosts nationally touring acts September through May.

"Ithaca is a Finger Lakes destination in and of itself, blending hippie grunge with the buttoned-up Ivy League atmosphere of Cornell University. As a growing number of spinoff slogans will tell you, Ithaca is art, Ithaca is food, and Ithaca is also festivals." --  Lonely Planet

"Perched on the south shores of New York's Lake Cayuga, Ithaca enjoys a youthful vibe and a restaurant and entertainment scene worthy of cities much larger." --  USA Today

"Glaciation blessed it with hundreds of gorges and waterfalls, while the microclimate of the lakes has created fecund wine country, not to mention a passion for watersports and a town-wide obsession with rowing." Among the best towns and small cities in the US. -- The Guardian

This Gorgeous City In New York's Finger Lakes Has Incredible Waterfalls & Beautiful Wineries

In the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Ithaca, New York, offers visitors the chance to explore stunning natural attractions and vibrant local culture. Known for its cascading waterfalls, breathtaking gorges, and sweeping views of Cayuga Lake, Ithaca is a perfect destination for nature lovers but is also said to have more restaurants per capita than New York City, per Visit Ithaca . (Plus, the Finger Lakes was named one of the best places to travel in 2022 by Travel + Leisure editors.)

“Original art, original music, locally grown foods, locally produced craft beverages — this is who we are and what we appreciate, and we want to share it with everyone who visits Ithaca,” said Peggy Coleman, VP of Tourism for the Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention & Visitors Bureau, in an interview with T+L .

Ithaca is a great starting point for travellers looking to explore the popular Finger Lakes wine trails. There are a number of local wineries lining the nearby lakes, many specialising in riesling, which the region is known for because it has a similar growing climate to Germany .

Ithaca is often likened to cities like Boulder, Colorado, or Burlington, Vermont, because of its independent, bohemian spirit. It’s a vibrant, diverse destination, and a college town — home to both Cornell University and Ithaca College. Here’s how to explore this city, where “gorges” puns run rampant and you’re never more than stumbling distance from a great hike.

Coleman said she’s seen an explosion of short-term rentals in the past decade and even more unique accommodations like farm-stay experiences as the tourism industry grows. She mentioned the Canopy by Hilton , located downtown, as a popular option for visitors who want to be centrally located.

Argos Inn is located just off the Ithaca Commons, with 13 rooms and one of the best cocktail bars in Ithaca in the lobby. This historic inn feels elegant yet cosy: a tucked away retreat that’s very walkable to downtown Ithaca.

About 20 minutes outside of town, the Inns of Aurora Resort and Spa is a campus of six high-end, peaceful inns located right on Cayuga Lake. This luxury hotel was voted the No. 1 resort in New York state by T+L readers in our 2022 World’s Best Awards. The Inn at Taughannock Falls is another cosy retreat near the lake and is a popular spot for weddings and large events.

For those looking to embrace the natural beauty Ithaca has to offer, Firelight Camps have glamping tents, with trails close by leading directly to some of the best waterfalls in town. Firelight Camps CEO Robert Frisch told T+L what visitors can expect when they stay.

“Sitting with a cocktail by the evening campfires blazing near our lobby tent is a really fun, casual social atmosphere,” he said. “Then, walking down the paths to your tent in the woods, and waking in the morning to birdsong is super relaxing and unique.”

Frisch said he has been lucky to see the tourism industry blossom over the past decade he’s been in business in Ithaca. Firelight Camps are celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2023.

“We’ve seen a huge boom in development in the urban downtown, but also a continued focus on outdoor experiences,” he said. “I’ve been so impressed with the city and town’s focus and commitment to growing in an intentional, sustainable manner.”

Things to do

Ithaca

The main attraction in Ithaca is undoubtedly the local scenery. Visitors can explore the town’s waterfalls and gorges, including popular spots like Buttermilk Falls State Park and Taughannock Falls State Park , both with cascading waterfalls surrounded by verdant forests. Near Cornell University, amateur and pro bird watchers alike will enjoy the easy trail through Sapsuker Woods .

Coleman recommended the centrally located Cascadilla Gorge trail , right off the Commons, as well as Mulholland Nature Preserve .

“I like that I can be surrounded by nature just a few minutes from downtown,” she said. “I also like to visit the Covered Bridge in Newfield — there’s a cute little shop right next to the bridge, the Covered Bridge Market , where I like to grab a snack or picnic to go.”

The Ithaca Farmers Market operates every weekend from April to December. Vendors include local craftspeople, farms with fresh produce, and local wineries . This open-air marketplace, along the Cayuga inlet, has been a staple of this town since 1973.

For Frisch, one of his favourite local getaways is East Shore Park on the lake, which is popular among local families.

“They have a great big public grill there, so we love having a simple BBQ and letting the kids run around there,” he said. “The revamped Stewart Park playground is also a stunning place to let your kids run around.”

He’s also a fan of Ithaca’s local music scene. He hopes visitors check out shows at some of the great smaller venues like Deep Dive and the Downstairs . The State Theatre of Ithaca is a popular stop for many musicians, as is the Hangar Theatre for musicals.

“Visitors should expect a relaxed adventure, be it breathtaking nature, an extensive variety of restaurants, live original music, and mind-expanding exhibits,” Coleman said.

For families looking for an engaging list of activities, check out the Discovery Trail , a partnership between top Ithaca attractions, including the kid-friendly Sciencenter — an interactive museum with hands-on exhibits — the Cayuga Nature Center , the Cornell Botanic Gardens , the Museum of the Earth , and more.

Visitors can also take a break from savouring Ithaca’s natural beauty to instead savour some of the finest wines in the region at nearby wineries. Six Mile Creek Vineyard ‘s tasting room offers panoramic views of the vineyard, award-winning cabernet franc, and live music on Thursdays. On the west side of Cayuga Lake, oenophiles can taste at wineries like Americana Vineyards and Thirsty Owl Wine Company . South Hill Cider is another of Coleman’s favourites. The couscous salad is as light and refreshing as the crisp, bubbly Baldwin cider. Or, pair the smoky, barrel-aged Farmhouse cider with the pulled pork sandwich. There’s also live music and yoga classes on weekends during the summer.

The Ithaca craft cider scene has expanded in the last 20 years, Coleman said. Finger Lakes Cider House is a worthwhile stop on Cayuga Lake, and Bellwether Cider and Wine sells at the Ithaca Farmers Market. “The craft cider scene is finally being recognised for the high quality being produced here,” she said. “As winemakers engage the terroir, so do our cider makers.”

Best Restaurants

two gorges tour ithaca

Ithaca is home to a wide range of options that cater to every palate, with hundreds of local restaurants showcasing almost every type of cuisine.

Moosewood Restaurant is one of the most famous Ithaca establishments, known for its delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes, using locally sourced ingredients. This destination spot has been a staple in the Ithaca community for more than 40 years, and recently underwent a full renovation. Another great dinner option is The Heights , near Cornell University, for high-end Mediterranean -inspired cuisine, or try Le Café Cent-Dix on The Commons for elegant French-inspired fare.

Frisch named Gola Osteria as his top spot in town for a nice dinner out, and Lev Kitchen on the Commons downtown for a more casual meal — “so tasty,” he said.

Visitors can also head to the Ithaca Beer Company taproom to enjoy a seat outside while dining on a robust farm-to-table menu and sampling beers made with local hops. For lunchtime sandwiches and breakfast options, find the nearest Ithaca Bakery or Collegetown Bagels (call it CTB to sound like a local) — there are several throughout town.

For dessert, make sure to stop at Purity Ice Cream , where, rumour has it, the ice cream sundae was invented. Operating in Ithaca since 1936, they have a mix of classic and unique flavours. Or, if you’re craving ice cream while touring the wineries on the west side of Cayuga Lake, hit Cayuga Lake Creamery — they also have a location on the commons.

Best time to visit

Ithaca

Ithaca is home to a year-round adventure. In spring, the waterfalls will be roaring to life thanks to the snowmelt, and flow generally from May until early October. In the fall, colourful foliage, milder temperatures, and fewer visitors make for a relaxing respite. And despite the colder temperatures, winter can be especially beautiful, with frozen lakes, falls, and winter activities like snowshoeing.

Summer is certainly the most popular time to visit, with warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. The college students clear out in the summer, which makes the area surprisingly crowd-free.

Ithaca also has many seasonal festivals and celebrations, including Porchfest, held every fall in the Fall Creek neighbourhood, a music festival celebrating artists who play, yes, from house porches; Apple Harvest Festival, also in the fall, which brings together cider-makers, local farms and more for a celebration of all things apple (the cider doughnuts are a can’t-miss); and Chili Cook-Off, in the late winter, with plenty of hot, delicious samples to warm up in the frigid upstate air. Check out the calendar of Downtown Ithaca events for more.

How to get there

Visitors to Ithaca can fly into Tompkins Regional Airport, which offers convenient access to the town and surrounding areas. As of summer 2023, the airport only operates flights to/from New York’s JFK International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport via United and Delta, but connections in the past have included Detroit and Philadelphia, and there are plans to possibly expand as far as Chicago and Los Angeles in the future.

If the flights to Ithaca are too limited for your travel plans, fly into Syracuse Hancock International Airport , which is about an hour’s drive from Ithaca and has a wider range of flight options.

From New York City, the drive up to Ithaca can take about four hours. Because of the large college population, there are also frequent bus routes into Ithaca from NYC. There’s a Greyhound station, and Cornell’s campus-to-campus bus service, which is available to the public.

Neighbourhoods to visit

two gorges tour ithaca

The Commons: Downtown Ithaca is where visitors will find the pedestrian-friendly blocks known as The Commons, home to tons of restaurants and shops.

Collegetown: Situated just outside of Cornell University is Collegetown, with a number of bars and eateries. Visitors who hike up the Cascadilla Gorge trail can reward themselves with a delicious beer or bagel from CTB.

South Hill: South Hill is where you’ll find Ithaca College, with Buttermilk Falls State Park flanking the west side, and Six Mile Creek natural area on the east.

Fall Creek: This charming neighbourhood has its namesake creek, homes of every shape and size, tree-lined streets, and the gorges — sorry, had to — Ithaca Falls.

How to get around

Ithaca

Once in Ithaca, most visitors will find that having a car offers the most flexibility, but the town also has a robust bus system called the TCAT that runs frequently.

Rideshare services are available, but with fewer drivers than in larger cities , it can take quite a while to get an Uber, so make sure to plan ahead and schedule rides if possible. For larger groups wanting to safely dive into all the Finger Lakes wineries have to offer, there are a number of bus and shuttle companies in the area. Make sure to check each winery’s group policy before arrival. You can find recommended group transportation services from the Finger Lakes Wine Country Tourism Association and the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance .

Cycling in the Finger Lakes: 7 bicycling trails and paths

  • Updated: Apr. 06, 2016, 1:00 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 06, 2016, 12:00 p.m.
  • Allison Kanaley

No question, the Finger Lakes  region has more than enough natural beauty to satisfy hikers, campers, boaters, and winery enthusiasts. Prefer to pedal on two wheels? No worries, bicyclists: the options for fun in the Finger Lakes stretch out farther than the eye can see. On the grand scale, Seneca Lake  offers up 77 miles for its roadway loop; Keuka Lake  has 44 miles. Looking for something a bit more leisurely, say a mile or two or 10? The Finger Lakes has that, too.

Located in the western Finger Lakes, Canadice Lake is a well-kept secret, but cyclists know the treasure that awaits here. This 8-mile down-and-back trail, along the lake's west side, can be extended an additional mile if you opt for the side trails that present more difficult terrain. The trail is gravel and grass track and is shared with hikers and runners.

This 12-mile trek from

south to Midway may come as a bit of a surprise, as it is mostly flat in a region known for its hills. Riders will enjoy the former rail bed's scenery. Take the trail a bit further to Horseheads for a total of 15 miles. Pick up the trail at the southern point of Seneca Lake in downtown Watkins Glen, near the marina and Harbor Hotel.

There are so many terrific rides near Seneca Lake, it's tough to pick just one. Ride the eastern shore using Sampson State Park (a loop of just over 7 miles), or Lakeshore Park at the north end (you'll find a 9-mile loop of paved surface here). Stretch a longer ride into two or more days, and take your pick of wineries, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants along the way.

Also known as Keuka Outlet Trail, this 7-mile stretch connects Keuka and Seneca lakes, and runs parallel to a former canal bed. Because it's multi-use trail, you'll likely share the path with hikers. There is a lot packed into this short ride: waterfalls and old mills make for some not-to-be-missed scenery.

Geneva's position at the north tip of Seneca Lake makes it not only a beautiful place to visit, but promises great views all around. As a cyclist, you'll need to work extra hard to keep your eyes on the road in front of you for this bike tour. A 35-mile loop has been mapped out, featuring mostly city streets, but some out of the way paths as well. This is a great way to see the area's winery influence, farmlands, and small city life.

At 28 miles, this trail takes cyclists between two wildly popular and incredibly beautiful neighbors,

. The ride is considered moderate in difficulty, due to terrain and several twists and turns. If you have the time, explore either of the parks on their own via bicycle. You'll not be disappointed.

The creeks and wooden bridges that characterize this

trail make it terrific for mountain biking, but also a lot of fun for families. It's a short trail, at 1.6 miles, and good for all skill levels. Pick up the trail at Crow Hill Road and Frost Street in Mottville, or just north of Skaneateles on the Seneca Turnpike. Both ends have parking.

15 Fun and Unique Things to do in Ithaca, NY

1. visit amazing wineries on the cayuga lake wine trail.

Best Things to do in Ithaca: Cayuga Lake Wine Trail

America’s first wine trail was right along Cayuga Lake. If you’re in town, following the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is one of the most fun things to do in Ithaca.

The trail will lead you to amazing views of the lake and surrounding waterfalls. It’s not just wineries, either! You’ll find a meadery, cideries, distilleries, and breweries too.

Established in 1983, the intent of the wine trail was to promote locally produced wines, and it continues in this capacity as a collective effort led by businesses in the area. Altogether, the wineries represented by this wine trail have collected awards from all over the world.

You might start the day with breakfast at one vineyard before heading to a few afternoon tastings. For a preview, check out Buttonwood Grove , Cayuga Ridge Estate , and Thirsty Owl Wine Co . Along the way, you might stop at Muranda Cheese Company to start assembling your own charcuterie board.

Most of the wineries and attractions are located on the west side of the lake, from its northern tip down to Ithaca. We’d recommend booking transportation so you can have a stress-free day.

2. Grab A Classy Brunch At Simeon’s American Bistro

Cool Things to do in Ithaca: Simeon's American Bistro

Simeon’s American Bistro is located right in the heart of the Ithaca Commons. This spot is worth the wait, serving up great brunch and even better dinners. The vibe is classic Americana with a fine dining twist.

We recommend sitting at the bar for brunch. Between the wall of liqueurs, marble countertop, and impeccable plating, Simeon’s offers a perfectly casual mood with the right amount of busy. Every ingredient is fresh, perfectly cooked, and served with care. The menu highlights include the fresh oysters, Bloody Mary cocktails, and salmon eggs benedict.

Fun Things to do in Ithaca: Simeon's American Bistro

As one of the top Ithaca attractions, this spot is a local favorite and impossible to miss, considering the building has been a staple of Ithaca’s downtown for about 135 years. With its prime location, you can people-watch while enjoying a glass of local wine and lobster dinner if that’s more your speed. Just get there early or book a table at this local favorite.

3. Get Amazing Views At Taughannock Falls State Park

What to do in Ithaca: Taughannock Falls State Park

Every visitor to Ithaca probably stops at the iconic Taughannock Falls. Conveniently located only 15 minutes from Ithaca by car, on the edge of wine country, it’s easy to fold a trip here into your itinerary, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of Ithaca’s gorges. If you’re looking for the very best things to do in Ithaca, this is a must.

The falls drop 215 feet, over twice as high as Niagara Falls. The towering and plunging gorges surrounding measure over 400 feet tall, and the trail is marked with signs that explain how these magnificent rock formations came to be.

Ithaca Bucket List: Taughannock Falls State Park

The gorge trail is super easy and under a mile long. Between the lower falls you’ll encounter, the green forest, and the view from the base right at the end, this place is gorgeous. There’s also an overlook that you can drive right up to for a different view.

If you want to make a larger trip of this, the park offers a beach, marina, and campsite nearby.

4. Shop Local At The Ithaca Farmers Market

Cool Things to do in Ithaca: Ithaca Farmers Market

The Ithaca Farmers Market has been a staple in Ithaca’s community since 1973 when it was opened up by volunteers. Even now, the market is run by a collective that aims to present high-quality, locally produced goods to the public.

We’d say this market also feels like a town square. You’ll be able to grab some delicious meals and snacks and have a picnic while you’re there, then peruse the fresh produce, handmade crafts, beverages, and plenty more.

Best Things to do in Ithaca: Ithaca Farmers Market

Every vendor at the Ithaca Farmers Market went through an application and judging period. These are the best local businesses in the area, and they’re open year-round!

The main market is open on weekends on Steamboat Landing just off Cayuga Lake, and it operates year-round. Two other markets open up right in Ithaca, and there’s a special winter market at Triphammer Marketplace, too. A trip to the farmers’ market is one of the top Ithaca activities, especially for the foodies in your group.

5. Tour Cornell University’s Attractions

Unique Things to do in Ithaca: Ithaca Cornell University

Arguably one of the top Ithaca attractions, Cornell University is worth a visit for its beautiful architecture and grounds alone. But, you might not have known that the campus also houses a beautiful botanic garden, one of Ithaca’s best art museums, and the beautiful Cascadilla Gorge Trail.

All of the attractions are free of charge and are open year-round. The botanical gardens cover nearly 150 acres of specialized gardens. The flower and herb gardens are beautiful, the wildflower area is forested and quiet, and you can also walk through the arboretum, depending on your mood.

Fun Things to do in Ithaca: Cornell University

The Johnson Museum of Art specializes in Asian art, but the collection also includes well-curated selections of contemporary and European pieces. Make sure you stop in the sculpture court for a Leo Villareal art installation and reclining chairs. This is a great place to relax before your next destination.

The Cascadilla Gorge Trail actually connects the Cornell campus and downtown Ithaca, and it’s definitely the best way to get between the two on foot. The views of the gorges and waterfalls are worth it, and the trail is well-maintained, with handrails and rest spots.

6. Watch A Performance At Ithaca College

Ithaca College has one of the best performing arts programs in the country, and if you visit during the academic year, you might be lucky enough to catch a performance. If the opportunity comes up, we’d highly recommend taking it.

For one, tickets to performances are very affordable, and smaller productions might even be free to attend. You might catch a Broadway-level musical rendition of Shakespeare or even a classic opera.

Three large productions are staged every year, beginning in late February and ending in late April. Productions run for about a week. Expect professional acting, staging, costuming, direction, and orchestra. Over 200 performing arts students come together for each production, and the results are always well-reviewed.

Alongside theater shows, orchestral concerts are held year-round and are also worth the trip to this campus. While you’re here, take a seat by the fountains, which light up at night to create a special atmosphere just outside the theater.

7. Check Out The Music Scene At Deep Dive

two gorges tour ithaca

Ithaca is home to a lively local music scene, between the locals and students who turn out for gigs to the independent bands touring through New York or Montreal who roll in for a weekend. If you’re a music lover, checking out one of the many venues is easily one of the most fun things to do in Ithaca.

Deep Dive is an intimate venue for these shows, and we’d recommend checking their calendar on the nights you’re in town. Deep Dive hosts events every weekend. You can expect everything from classic reggae nights, locally organized open-mic nights, and performances by the house band to bluegrass shows, indie acts like Mikaela Davis and Circles Around the Sun, and more.

Must do things in Ithaca: Deep Dive

Deep Dive serves drinks and food in an ambiance that can be described as neon, funky, and low-key. Run by music industry vets, you can expect solid service and a great sound system.

Other venues that you might want to check out include The Upstairs , which is similar to Deep Dive with a more classic style. If you mainly want to dance and have a cocktail, head to Lot 10.

8. Grab A Nightcap At The Watershed

Must do things in Ithaca: The Watershed

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Ithaca at night, you’ll appreciate that downtown Ithaca is packed with cocktail lounges, dive bars, and pubs. What makes The Watershed stand out is its commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. Come for the great drinks, and stay for the nice vibe. This is the perfect place to grab a nightcap and have a great conversation.

You can expect a solid selection of regional craft beers, artisanal ciders, a small but curated wine list, and, of course, cocktails. The Watershed specializes in mixed drinks with a unique zero-waste philosophy. Unlike most bars, The Watershed generates less than a pound of landfill waste daily. No fruit hulls, no dirty ice, and no inedible add-ons or garnishes.

Ithaca Bucket List: The Watershed

Expect new twists on old favorites, like a mezcal old fashioned, a purple G and T, or an autumn Manhattan. There’s also a special selection of sober cocktails, so everyone can have a handcrafted experience.

Expect only small nibbles on the menu – locally sourced and delicious, but not a full meal. This is firmly an after-dinner stop.

9. Take A Walk Through The Ithaca Commons

Best Things to do in Ithaca: Ithaca Commons

The Ithaca Commons is the beating heart of the town. It’s a four-block section of Ithaca’s downtown, which might not sound like much, but it’s always buzzing with activity. All of Ithaca’s best bars, shops, and restaurants live on and around this pedestrian-only strip.

For starters, you can grab a coffee at Nothing Nowhere, then head over to Dewitt Mall , a historic complex filled with vintage shops and boutiques. After that, make your way to the fantastic  Angry Mom Records  and listen to a few rare vinyls before checking out Autumn Leaves Used Books, which sits right on top of it.

Ithaca Things to do: Ithaca Commons

Once you’ve got your shopping done, for dinner, you might go to Taste of Thai , then head over to The Cellar D’Or for a special bottle, or rack up for a game of pool at The Range while a local band plays. Basically, you can’t go wrong in the Commons: just take a walk and let the evening lead you.

10. Enjoy A Chill Evening At Sacred Root Kava Lounge

Best Things to do in Ithaca: Kava

The Sacred Root Kava Lounge is a hidden treasure in Ithaca. Despite being housed right off the Ithaca Commons, this spot is always calm and quiet. The spacious basement suite is decked out in a comfortable and cool boho style, with vintage rugs, eclectic furniture, and nooks and crannies to hide out in.

The main draw of the lounge is that it’s one of a rare few venues that serves kava – a traditional plant beverage commonly consumed in the South Pacific. The drink is known to help relax muscles, calm emotions, and improve general well-being without the adverse effects of drinking, say, alcohol.

This lounge serves amazing organic teas and vegan treats. It’s worth a stop for the atmosphere alone, which feels like an oasis in an otherwise busy college town. There’s often a live band playing on the weekends.

11. Visit The Fall Creek Suspension Bridge (Falls Creek Gorge)

Ithaca Things to do: Fall Creek

The Fall Creek Suspension Bridge is a New York state landmark and one of the best things to do in Ithaca. The bridge is suspended 140 feet above the Fall Creek gorge near Cornell University. It stretches over 270 feet across, and the bridge noticeably dips and sways with the wind.

From the bridge, you’ll be able to see across the tops of old-growth trees, which are especially stunning in the fall as the leaves begin to change color. You’ll also have a bird’s-eye vantage over the gorge, including a stunning view of the Rocky Falls, a 44-foot waterfall in the middle of Ithaca’s woodland area.

This is also the site of classic movie magic. Back in 1914, the Wharton brothers, silent film legends, drove a trolley car off Ithaca’s Stewart Avenue Bridge and into the Fall Creek Gorge while almost 1,000 spectators watched, inaugurating the beginning of the cliffhanger genre of films.

These days, the gorge is thankfully trolley-car free and is a beautiful, if sometimes nerve-wracking, part of Ithaca’s history.

12. Grab A Snack At Collegetown Bagels

Of all the coffee and sandwich shops in Ithaca, none quite match the institution that is Collegetown Bagels . This local chain began with one cafe in 1976 and has since expanded to seven locations and national shipping.

Even so, when you step inside one of these shops, you still feel that home-style approach, from the quick but friendly service to the simple menu. You can’t go wrong with options from a classic New York bagel to a breakfast sandwich to a panini or salad. If you need a pick-me-up, there are also specialty coffee drinks that rotate daily.

This is a great place to stop for a quick lunch and a caffeine break, but you might also spend the afternoon working in the cafe or people-watching on the sidewalk, and that would work too.

Either way, expect to spend more time here than you thought you would. Between tourists, students, professors, and locals, the crowd is eclectic, interesting, and unbothered – much like the store itself.

13. Have A Swim In Robert Tremens State Park

Unique Things to do in Ithaca: Robert Tremens State Park

Most of the gorges in Ithaca are not safe to swim in, but if you’re itching to take a dip, just head to Robert Tremens State Park! During the warm months, the lower falls open up for swimming, and you can dive into one of the most beautiful locales in New York state. Taking a swim here is definitely one of the coolest things to do in Ithaca!

With six trails to choose from, you’ve got a lot of options when it comes to catching a view of the beautiful gorges. The rim trail is more strenuous, but it promises the best views of the Lucifer Falls, which cascades down 115 feet of rock face. Go back down on the gorge trail to complete your sightseeing expedition with the numerous smaller cascades all the way down.

Cool Things to do in Ithaca: Robert Tremens State Park

Follow up your hike by jumping into the swimming hole at the lower falls. This state park is less than a 10-minute drive from Ithaca, and it comes fully equipped with campsites, picnic facilities, and even fossil hunting activities. You can swing over to the nearby Buttermilk Falls, too, to complete your Ithaca gorge trekking trip.

14. Go Kayaking On Cayuga Lake

Cool Things to do in Ithaca: Kayaking on Cayuga Lake

Cayuga Lake is the longest of the Finger Lakes and the second largest overall. Ithaca sits at the lake’s south shore. If you’re staying in Ithaca, access to the lake is fast and easy, and you’ll find that it’s a great place to bookend a trip to one of the region’s fantastic wineries or the gorge hikes nearby.

Specifically developed for water recreation, the Cayuga Lake Blueway Trail comprises launch and exit sites all along the shore. You can start and stop your trip at convenient locations, which might include your own accommodations if you’ve chosen to stay by the lake. If you’re looking for fun outdoor Ithaca activities, you can rent a paddleboard or kayak in Ithaca or at one of the larger public launch points.

Unique Things to do in Ithaca: Kayaking on Cayuga Lake

Maybe you’ll get started at Stewart Park in Ithaca, then paddle up to Taughannock Falls State Park or to Long Point State Park on the eastern shore. You’ll spot a number of vineyards along the way, which might entice you to disembark for a quick tasting, and you might also grab lunch in Trumansburg or spend your afternoon on the beach.

15. Stargaze At The Fuertes Observatory

Fun Things to do in Ithaca: Fuertes Observatory

Every Friday night, the Fuertes Observatory on the Cornell University campus opens up for public viewings of the cosmos. From 8 pm to midnight during the academic year, you can stop in for some of the best stargazing to be found on the East Coast.

The undergraduate Cornell Astronomical Society has been running these public observing nights since 1972. During special events, you might also meet one of Cornell’s faculty or staff members from the Department of Astrology, who’ll give you a guided tour of the night sky.

Fuertes is the university’s fifth observatory, and each of its predecessors has been demolished. It is now exclusively used for introductory lab classes and public outreach.

Cool Things to do in Ithaca: Fuertes Observatory

The guided viewings are complemented by the antique Irving Porter Church Telescope, a beautiful piece of astronomical technology that still contains an original clock drive from 1923. Smaller, modern telescopes are also available to the public on viewing nights.

This observatory, while small, is full of history and run by a passionate group of brilliant volunteers. It’s the perfect place to go after a night on the town or a day exploring the Finger Lakes, where you can get a view of Ithaca that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else. If you’re looking for unique things to do in Ithaca, marveling at the star-speckled sky is a must!

The iconic Cascadilla Gorge Trail connects downtown Ithaca with the Cornell Campus through one of the most picturesque gorges in the Finger Lakes Region.

Location: You can access the gorge from the "Treman Triangle" off of Linn Street in downtown Ithaca and from behind the Schwartz Performing Arts Center in Collegetown.

The Cascadilla Gorge Trail between College Avenue and Linn Street is closed for the winter beginning December 9, 2022.

Cascadilla Gorge is truly a "gorges" display of rock, water and trees. Cascadilla Creek drops 400 feet from campus to downtown Ithaca, carving through bedrock—shale, siltstone and sandstone—exposing sedimentary rocks that were deposited 400 million years ago.

Cascadilla Gorge was originally preserved and donated to Cornell University by Robert H. Treman in 1909 to support public use, education, and enjoyment.

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be headed to the Ithaca area for 2 nights 3 days with my wife and 4 year old son in mid-August. My son is a great walker and can walk miles without getting tired. It looks like there are so many great hikes to do and I'm having trouble choosing. Was looking for people's advice on the best gorges / waterfalls to hike and see.

Our plan so far is to arrive in the Ithaca area around 3 pm and visit Ithaca Falls and then walk around Cornell before grabbing dinner and checking into the hotel.

For our second day, I was thinking of hitting up a local farmer's market to pick up lunch materials and then head to Taughannock falls for a hike and a picnic lunch in the area followed by a swim at Buttermilk Falls. Not sure if it is overly ambitious, but then we were thinking of going to Treman Park to close out the day before heading back to downtown Ithaca for dinner.

Any great gorges or falls that I'm missing?

On our third day, we are leaving Ithaca to head up to Niagara Falls (and are staying there). Any suggestions on great places to stop off along the way through the area to see?

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

' class=

The gorge trail at Robert Treman is easily the best hike in the area IMO. It is 4 miles round trip and will have some moderately steep sections. The hike to the Taughannock Falls is flat and only 1.5 miles round trip and is worthwhile; this may be the more kid friendly option. My least favorite place to swim of the three parks is at Buttermilk but it is still a reasonable option and very kid-friendly. My favorite is at Treman because you can swim to the falls and camp yourself under it on the natural ledge.

The weekend farmer's market is definitely worth doing. There are farmers market every day except Monday during the week but they are at different locations then the one on the weekend.

Other great options on the way to NF are Watkins Glen and Letchworth state parks.

Thanks rjr0810, I was looking at the map and figured Watkins Glen was a great place to stop off in the morning and maybe have a picnic lunch on the way to Niagara Falls.

Are all the parks dog friendly?

A couple thoughts for your trip from Ithaca to NF - you could swing by Letchworth SP and, if this kind of thing appeals to you, there is the Museum of Play in Rochester, which is quite fun for younger children.

two gorges tour ithaca

There is a great groupon for Hope Lake Lodge right now.. two nights with waterpark passes for $329. We just booked it and are looking at the State Parks ourselves. We did Treeman last time we were here. We picked it because you could swim by the falls, but we were so shocked (literally) and disappointed at how cold the water was. We are going trying to choose between the Taughannock and Buttermilk now. Buttermilk is closer but those falls at Taughannock look amazing. Any recommendations? The walking isn't really our concern as much as which one is the most beautiful and most to do?

This tour features three stops around Ithaca – two are home to producers of hand-crafted, boutique-style ciders and wines, and one shows off our favorite Ithaca waterfall.

We visit Black Diamond Farm, home of Black Diamond Cider. The farm has been producing high-quality heirloom, modern and European cider apple varieties for over two decades. Although we only began producing hard cider commercially in 2014, cider making has been a passion of owners, Jackie and Ian, for more than 30 years. When we arrive, Ian, or one of the family, will take you on a tour of their farm and share with you the process of quality cider making. Afterward, enjoy a tasting of their cider. As a special treat, enjoy some local cheese paired with one of the ciders.

Head to  Bet The Farm Winery  where winemaker and founder, Nancy Tisch, along with her husband Kit Kalfs, create small-batch wine that represents the magic of the Finger Lakes region. Their well-balanced, thoughtful wines pair great with food and are also enjoyable on their own.

Our last stop is the spectacular Taughannock Falls or Ithaca Falls. We get up close and personal with either of these awe-inspiring waterfalls, providing the perfect ending to the afternoon. There is a short walk along an unpaved trail to get to the base of the falls, so we encourage you to wear appropriate footwear!
