Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 January 2023, updated on 16 April 2024

At the heart of Champagne Since 1827

The first pages of the House of G.H.MUMM fabled winemaking history were written long before 1827, its official founding date. The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the twelfth century. Already in 1761, the family had launched a business as wine producers and merchants based in Cologne. The company owned large vineyards in the Rhine valley, where it created its own wines. In the early years of the nineteenth century, Peter Arnold Mumm's three sons recognised the sales potential of the outstanding sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France . From the outset, quality was the key watchword for the partners in this new entity formed in 1827, and it has remained so for all of their successors. This approach would be encapsulated in the motto: "Only the best".

Terroirs and Crus

The House of G. H.MUMM's own vineyards cover nearly 218 hectares . The vineyards, in which Pinot Noir is highly dominant (78%) particularly in the Montagne de Reims , spread over the Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant and Avize devoted to Chardonnay in the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, where Pinot Meunier prevails.

With their total area under vines rated at an impressive 98% on the champagne quality scale, G.H.MUMM's vineyards include 160 hectares classified as Grands Crus and are situated in eight historic villages whose grapes express all of the authenticity of the Champagne region's best terroirs: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Mailly, Avize and Cramant. Very early in its history, the House of G. H.MUMM realised the importance of establishing a system to ensure the highest quality, supervising every stage in production, from grape-growing practices in all its vineyards to the crucial pressing process. The House set up thus its wine presses directly in the vineyards and also introduced a supply policy that was unprecedented at the time: purchasing grapes directly from growers in the finest vineyards rather than unfermented juice.

Visits in the depths of the cellars

G.H. MUMM welcomes you to discover the soul and expertise of a House dating back two hundred years, and to glimpse the true secrets that go into crafting its wines. You will also be able to visit our museum, one of the most comprehensive on the art of champagne-making. Guides will accompany you during the whole visit right through to the tasting, where they will initiate more inquisitive visitors into the etiquette and art of champagne tasting according to G.H. MUMM.

The secret of Mumm champagne

A delicious experience behind the scenes of cordon rouge.

Twitter icon

An essential excursion during your stay in Reims, a visit to the wine cellars of Mumm will take you up close to champagne. An authentic heritage to discover, followed by a tasting of this historic champagne.

Visiting Mumm is a real experience : understand champagne ‘from the inside’ and feel the spirit of innovative conquest characterizing a company which, since its foundation in 1827, has continued to demonstrate its audacity and high standards .

A maze dedicated to champagne

You reach the heart of the 25 km of underground tunnels , a maze highlighted by a beautiful display of lights. Some 25 million bottles are stored here! The visit starts with a film , which explains everything you need to know about the history of Mumm and its great champagnes . Do you know that the famous Cordon Rouge champagne , emblem of this brand born in 1875, is a tribute to the French Légion d’Honneur award?

A delicious, fleeting experience, like the bubbles of champagne.

A guide then accompanies you to the underground galleries and the former fermenting rooms, which have been preserved in their original state . In front of the bottles of champagne, he will reveal the secrets of the creation of the bubbles , from the grape harvest to the remuage process of turning the bottles , from the wine cellar to the glass. This centuries-old craft respects tradition and follows the motto of Georges Hermann Mumm: ‘Only the best.’ As for the remuer machines, they each turn 40,000 bottles each day ! These devices modify the position of the bottles by several degrees until they are in an almost vertical position, so that the sediment moves towards the cork.

Cordon Rouge: Grand cru or vintage champagne?

Then visit the tools museum and take the time to discover the different skills required to make champagne. This trip provides a unique insight into the production of champagne. The champagne tasting is now imminent! Depending on the visit you choose, taste either a glass of the famous Cordon Rouge champagne, of the Vintage 2013, or savour two top-quality Grands Crus champagnes  (RSRV Blanc de Blancs and RSRV Blanc de Noirs).

The Beginner's Guide to Visiting Champagne

By Mark Ellwood

Montagne de Reims

If that celebratory glass of champagne has gone to your head, you’re not alone. Americans are drinking France's most famous fizz more and more: In 2017, stateside shipments of Champagne reached their highest levels ever , at 23 million bottles (a five percent increase from the previous year). What if you want to go further than the local wine store, and visit the land that gave the world the ultimate mood-lifter in a glass ? You won't be able to just show up and traipse around Veuve Clicquot's svelte vineyards; you'll need a plan. We gathered our need-to-know tips into this handy primer to help you out.

First things first: The term "Champagne" isn't a catch-all for anything sparkling in a glass. It refers to a type of bubbly, made according to specific standards, within one of the sub-zones of France's Champagne region. This winemaking region surrounds Paris on the northeast side, with the cities of Reims and Epernay often used as visitors' home bases (heavy-hitter producers like the aforementioned Veuve and Mumm are there, too). They're both easily accessible by train from Paris and less than a two-hour ride away, though you can rent a car (or hire a driver—particularly recommended if you plan to drink and not stay overnight).

Epernay France

Epernay is one of our favorite home bases for a Champagne tour.

Two days is plenty for a first visit, according to Caroline Brun, one of the area's foremost guides. “Don’t worry," she says with a laugh. "You will be addicted to Champagne after that first visit, and next time, you can visit for longer.” Avoid harvest time, usually in late summer, especially if you want to see the smaller, independent vineyards rather than just the big name brands. Those owner-operated set-ups—known as grower champagnes—will likely be too busy to welcome visitors. Instead, Brun recommends going in October and November. “The harvest is over, but you can still find some grapes remaining in the vineyards," she says. "The colors are changing, so all the slopes aren’t green, but reddish gold.”

What to Pack

Though quaffing a glass of champagne might be glamorous, adopt a more practical approach for outfitting yourself when you visit the region. Bring sneakers or flat shoes: Many of the roads are cobbled, the cellars are uneven, and you’ll likely be picking your way through the vines. A sweater or down vest is handy, too: The weather in this part of northern France can prove rather English (think: gray and rainy, regardless of time of year), and the caves are often chilly, too.

Have a Strategy

Don’t expect to be spontaneous, either. Unlike Napa, or even Bordeaux, where tasting rooms are usually ready to welcome walk-ins, even the larger houses in Champagne operate by appointment. Check websites to book your slot (be prompt: lateness isn’t just considered rude—it might result in your forfeiting access). Wineries open in the morning and almost all will shut over lunch. “Remember that it’s really important to have a hearty breakfast, since you may well have your first tasting at 10 a.m. [before drinking all day], and you may not be used to that,” says Jenna Jones, from wine tour specialist Grape Escapes .

Logistics in the region can be frustrating. Public transportation is patchy, and taxi prices are exorbitant: Call for a pick-up from a vineyard beyond city limits, and you’ll pay not only for your journey, but for however long it takes for the taxi to arrive, too. If you want to explore those less accessible champagne houses, it’s best to book a tour that includes transport. You can book a tour through Grape Escapes, and Brun, too, offers custom private tours, starting at €350 per person; contact her at [email protected].

Montagne de Reims

If time is short, visit Montagne de Reims, home to Ruinart and Taittinger.

Where to Taste

Champagne has five main regions , or zones. Stay in Reims to explore the Montagne de Reims , which focuses on pinot noir. This zone makes the fullest bodied Champagnes, often intended to age. By contrast, base yourself in Epernay to explore the pinot meunier–focused region of the Vallée de la Marne . Pinot meunier is usually blended with other grapes; for example, it’s used with pinot noir to make delicious blanc des noirs . Stay there, too, if you’re curious to see the Côte des Blancs , which focuses solely on chardonnay-based bubbly. This is also used in blends or to make the light, aperitif-style blanc de blancs Champagne. You could make Troyes your base if you want to explore two lesser-known areas: the Aube , which contributes grapes mostly for non-vintage fizz, and the newish Côte de Sézanne , which specializes in chardonnay-focused plantings.

The first three regions will hold the greatest interest for most travelers. You can visit all three in a single day, albeit with a little planning, but if you’d rather spend less time commuting and dive deep into a single region, Jones recommends focusing on the Montagne de Reims. Most household name champagnes lean heavily on pinot noir, she says, so visitors’ palates tend to be accustomed to this style. Such familiarity also makes tasting more accessible, and it’s easier for a newbie to discern the subtle differences between the houses there.

Among the major marquees, don’t miss Taittinger , which most insiders agree is the best organized and most insightful of the visitor experiences. Ruinart , too, is a standout. Among grower champagnes, try Eric Rodez in Ambonnay, which makes an unusual blanc de blancs from chardonnay grown there, or the Côte des Blancs–based Henry de Vaugency , where the English-speaking owner Pascal conducts tours personally (his Grand Cru quality wines start at less than €20 per bottle, too). There’s a fine museum at the tiny vineyard of Meteyer , which also produces superb Champagne from the Côte des Noirs; another notable nearby is Lamiable , in the Grand Cru village of Tours sur Marne.

For more suggestions of standout boutique producers, check Vine Trail . One major advantage to visiting smaller produces like these: The entire process takes place onsite, so you can see the journey from grape to bottle. Larger brands, by contrast, tend to welcome visitors solely to their cellars, where the bottles are stored.

Royal Champagne Hotel Spa

Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

Where to Stay And Eat

Epernay is arguably the handiest base, as it’s at the center of the region. What's more, its main drag is the Avenue de Champagne, whose tenants read like a roll call of the area’s best-known alums: Moët & Chandon (tip: despite the SNL skit, it's pronounced "Mo-ET"), Perrier Jouët, Pol Roger, and more. Even better, a new five-star hotel and spa, Royal Champagne , opened this spring north of the town and is owned by Franco-American couple Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, who also own biodynamic Champagne house Leclerc Briant . It’s on a storied site, where Napoleon once guzzled a few magnums. The head sommelier of its restaurant, Alberto Segade—a veteran of London’s Claridge's —is especially knowledgeable.

Reims has its own attractions beyond the local wine—its Gothic cathedral, for example—and as a university town, is much livelier in the evenings; both Ruinart and Taittinger are here. Stay in the city center at the historic, 18-room Grand Hotel des Templiers . There’s a fistful of Michelin-starred restaurants in the city—and though delicious, they tend to be overpriced. Consider eating among the locals at fish restaurant Le Bocal , tucked in the back of a fishmonger, and the funky, deli-style wine shop and wine bar Au Bon Manger .

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider Troyes . Less business-focused than the other two, it retains far more of those medieval buildings, with their familiar, whitewashed wooden façades. One of them is the wood-timbered Maison de Rhodes , right in the historic center. It was once the local base for the Knights of Malta, hence the name. The wine bar and shop Au Crieurs de Vin in town features mostly organic Champagnes, many of them surprisingly affordable.

Moscow Travel Guide

Despite the Soviet past, today’s Moscow is a dynamic, cutting-edge city – and the most populous in Europe. Well-heeled Muscovites flaunt their wealth by sipping Champagne with sushi at elite restaurants and shopping for designer labels at frighteningly expensive boutiques. Meanwhile, a growing middle-class has seen a proliferation of hip bars and trendy cultural centres.

While the Russian capital has striven to move on, recent tensions with the West have stirred up memories of the past. Moscow has previously led the way with protests against Vladimir Putin, but even with the tumbling ruble and economic sanctions, his popularity remains strong.

This doesn’t make Russia a no-go area, and Moscow – with its cosmopolitan, globe-trotting denizens – is not the formidable crucible often depicted. In summer, temperatures soar and the city’s vast parklands flourish. The historic Gorky Park received a complete makeover in 2012, installing free Wi-Fi and even a beach, while the Soviet behemoth that was the Rossiya Hotel has been demolished to make way for an ambitious central park.

Before that project comes to fruition, there is Red Square to marvel at, not least the mind-boggling St Basil’s Cathedral. Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, its multi-coloured domes and acid-trip patterns seem to defy logic. Nearby is the 14th-century Kremlin and seat of the tsars.

Indeed architecture is one of the city’s main attractions, especially for aficionados of Soviet buildings. All too many have been destroyed to make way for gleaming 21st-century skyscrapers, but Stalin’s unmistakable Seven Sisters still stand tall against the modern towers.

The city is naturally keen to celebrate its great writers, composers and artists too. This sophisticated city boasts world-class institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.

As for nightlife, the city is becoming increasingly hedonistic – whether jazz, rock or vodka is your thing, there are plenty of options. Even the culinary circuit has come on leaps and bounds, though an evening at one of the city’s growing stable of world-class restaurants requires considerable investment. This is, after all, a capital of oligarchs.

Book Accommodation

Featured hotels, izmailovo (gamma-delta).

Constructed to accommodate visitors to the 1980 Olympics, the concrete towers of the Izmailovo boast a staggering 8,000 rooms. Institutional in atmosphere, and located far out in the northern suburbs, the hotel is handy for the enormous Izmaylovo Market and has decent city centre links. There are several onsite restaurants and in-room Wi-Fi is available too.

Peking Hotel

Built in 1956 as a little sister to Stalin's Seven Sister skyscrapers, and intended as post-war headquarters for the secret police, Moscow's Peking Hotel is a heritage hotel with a small 'h', in a good location just northwest of the centre. Although slightly old-fashioned, its 130 rooms are comfortable enough, with satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms.

Warsaw Hotel

Although its location may not be one of Moscow's most picturesque, the Warsaw Hotel is convenient for Gorky Park. Considering the quality of the competition, this is one of the best cheap options in the city, with clean and comfortable rooms, albeit in a rather dated style. Wi-Fi is complimentary and the Oktyabrskaya Metro station is right next door.

Golden Apple

A boutique hotel on a refreshingly human scale, the Golden Apple offers imaginative styling and a personal touch that many 5-star hotels lack. Behind the baroque facade, its minimalist rooms are cosy, and there's an onsite restaurant and an open-plan bar too. Staff speak excellent English and there's Wi-Fi access, a gym and a sauna.

Historical Hotel Sovietsky

In the 1950s, Joseph Stalin decreed that the famous Yar restaurant should be upgraded to a hotel and the Historical Hotel Sovietsky was born. It quickly became a showcase for the image of sophistication that the Soviet government wished to present to the world, and its 107 rooms still conjures up the nostalgia of this period in history.

Hotel Danilovsky

It's hard to imagine a more atmospheric place to stay than the 12-century precincts of the historic Danilovsky Monastery. Set amidst chapels and gardens, the hotel is a modern construction, but the rooms are comfortable and all have a view of the stately monastery buildings. There's a sauna and bar onsite too.
