The Association are a folk-rock band hailing from California, United States who formed in 1965. Since their debut in 1966 they have released nine studio albums and are known for being one of the most popular singles bands of the late 60’s.

The seeds of The Association were sewn with the meeting of Jules Alexander and Terry Kirkman in Hawaii in 1962. The two men were budding musicians and jammed together while they could, finding that they had genuine creative chemistry with each other. However, Alexander was in Hawaii while serving a stint in the Navy, and wasn’t going to be discharged until a year later. They made a pact to form a band together once Alexander was discharged, and a year later they made good on it, moving to Los Angeles together in the mid-1960’s. The first group they formed was called The Inner Tubes, which expanded into a thirteen piece band called The Men, notable for being the first act to call themselves a “Folk-Rock” band.

However after a spell as the house band at L.A’s legendary Troubadour venue, the band split up. Not to be deterred, Alexander and Kirkmen formed the first incarnation of The Association soon afterwards, and after five months of solid rehearsal time, they scored a regular slot playing live at Pasadena, California’s Icehouse club. They auditioned for a number of record labels and were finally signed to Valiant Records, who would release their first national hit “Along Comes Mary” in 1966. The song peaked at number 6 on the Billboard charts and led to the release of the band’s first album proper “And Then...Along Comes the Association”. The album didn’t set the charts alight, but their follow up single “Cherish” did exactly that.

The song was a number one smash hit, and the band spent the rest of the 1960’s as one of California’s premier hit-makers, with another number one hit in the form of 1967’s “Windy”. Ever since then the band could populate a large village with their past members but for most part, Alexander has stayed with the band, and helms them to this day. They might not have had the staying power that some of their peers had but they have a back catalogue that no-one could argue with, and a live show that can only come from over half a century of experience. For that, The Association comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Sometimes there seems to be little rhyme and reason in the music business. There are many instances when incredibly talented and ingenious bands slip under the spotlight while atrocities manage to create a stir in the mass public. The Association is an example of one of the music industries conundrums. The group had originality, an outstanding sense of harmonization, an understanding of song construction and a persevering drive that outreached many of their contemporaries. While they sported several hit songs and had more than a substantial career, they never managed to hit the “big time” so to speak. At least comparative to many of the pop sensations culminating in the 60s. Perhaps the lost opportunity of properly reissuing their recordings on cd may have contributed to the fizzling out of the groups career; however, for those who first had the chance to hear the bands recordings did not easily give up on the group.

The song “Windy” was one of the first tracks from my early youth that I have a conscious memory of. In my opinion that song was just as good as a Beatles tune. Of course back then I was less clouded by the bias of persisting music trends and my social climate. The Association had a sound that instantly struck a chord with their audience. Like the Beach Boys their music was so open and relatable that it seemed to apply to almost everyone.

Not only were they skilled songwriters they were natural born musicians who had an incredible sense of chemistry. In fact they are still performing to this day and haven’t seemed to decline in quality in the slightest. The group has keen precision and a knack for controlling the audience. Their instrumentation is fairly modest, but they are always able to produce interesting sounds. At some of their shows they pull out a toy-like recorder, and showcase some of the most catchy melodies on it. However their strong-suit lies in their vocal performance. Everyone in the group has a voice of gold and they make things exciting switching between members for vocal leads. But the real charm of their music comes from their godly harmonizations. The Association are a classic act and though their career has unjustly been overshadowed they absolutely should not be missed.

I have wanted to see the Association forever. I can remember the first time I heard one of their songs in the mid-sixties when I joined the Navy. So, you can imagine how excited I was to get two tickets to see the band live at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas on Friday night, November 29, 2019.

Sadly, the show was absolutely miserable. The two remaining original members are tired and the keyboard, guitar, singer son of an original member does not look like he fits in. His mannerisms and hair style (plus a black fedora) are more appropriate for a small venue bar band. The amplification system, which was probably adequate years ago, is ineffective and out of date. The video introduction doesn't compare to others I have seen for same period artists. In short, the show fell far short of expectations.

The Association has an incredible music collection. In fact, the lead singer, mentioned that three Association songs are among the top 100 of all time as measured by Billboard. With that kind of a repertoire, I was really put off when they spent nearly ten minutes playing a set of covers from the 1983 movie, "The Big Chill." My guest and I did not buy tickets to hear the Association play other group's hits.

Summer of 66 was the summer of the Association, the Beatles, Mama and the Papas and others. This evening was 95 minutes of wonderful songs of that time. As you looked around you saw those who remember that time and those who were not alive for years to come. What was common was the joy that is in that music. You could see it in everyone’s face. This is not your high production show that so often passes for entertainment in Vegas. No this is music that hit everyone in the room in their soul. If they are coming near you do yourself a favor and go see the Association. I promise you will enjoy the evening and leave with joy in your soul.

We have seen several groups with names of groups of the 1960s/1970s. Many have one original member, but always you left wanting to hear the original sound of the group. Going to The Association concert you will leave having just heard the songs you love song correctly.

Lots of good songs. Probably played about 15, only 3 of which were not their big hits (even Walk Away Renee by another artist). All the singing and harmonies were on except a couple times Jim Yester (original member @ 78!) had some difficulty at the beginning hitting the high notes (improved as the show went on). They were funny in between the songs and the music was lively and tight. I would highly recommend them to those who remember good music from the late 60s. Two of the members are originals, one is the son of an original and a couple others had stints with the group in the 80s/90s. These guys can still perform and kick out great tunes!

The Association was AMAZING and I highly recommend their show. I would go again in a heart beat. They were really funny when talking about their past and demos that they've gotten and people they have performed with. Loved "Avocado" and the "Dubuque" song. Of course they played their famous songs: "Cherish", "Windy", "Along Comes Mary", "Never My Love" and so many more. They sounded the same and their harmony is amazing. The venue is also amazing.

Hi I hope you fellows read these. Is there anyway you can come to the Detroit area to do a show? Maybe you could hook up with Tommy James n the Shondells. They live in the area and you both have some outstanding tunes. Just a thought. But I grew up in my teens when you were popping off hits on the radio, and I really Love your band. Please come out if your able to.

All my best, Mary Solak.

Generally, the group played their songs well but lead singer Jim Yester has a difficult time hitting the notes he used to do with ease. I think he's a little to old to be singing lead. The music was nostalgic and brought back good memories of when music was great!

Although Larry Ramos passed away they are still worth spending my money to see. I saw them at the Metropolis in Arlington Heights and met them after their concert. It was probably the best concert of my life. Meeting the guys was just a bonus!

The World's 10 Biggest Women's Golf Tours

The LPGA and LET are the most publicised women’s tours, but did you know that there are actually 10 significant women’s tours worldwide? We take a look at each

Lilia Vu, Yin Ruoning, Danielle Kang, Rose Zhang ahead of 2023 Buick LPGA Shanghai

With women’s golf booming there’s never been a better time to play the game professionally. There’s more sponsorship money and more opportunities for women to play golf competitively for a living. In fact there are eight women’s tours globally. So whether you’re an aspiring professional hoping to graduate from the amateur ranks, or simply an avid supporter of the women’s game, there’s certainly a lot going on in the global competitive scene.

Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)

Let’s start with the biggest and most publicised women’s golf tour in the world - the LPGA Tour. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) began the LPGA Tour, a series of weekly golf tournaments in 1950 when 13 pioneers including Babe Zaharias, Patty Berg and Louise Suggs had a dream to provide for elite women golfers with a platform to play professional golf. The founders were elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame as a group in 2023.

The LPGA began as a tour with events just across the USA but has since expanded to have a more global presence with a handful of co-sanctioned events now held outside of the United States in Asia, Europe, Australia and Canada. Every year it goes from strength-to-strength.

In 2020 the LPGA Tour soared to new prize-fund heights breaking through the $70 million prize purse mark, making it the world’s richest tour for women. Because of that it is widely regarded as the largest and most prestigious women’s tour to play on.

In order to earn playing rights (a tour card) to compete on the LPGA Tour, women professionals have to graduate through an annual qualifying school. This can take up to four stages to negotiate, each like a regular golf tournament with only a small number of players going on to the next stage.

The final qualifying school is over six rounds. Those successful join the leaders on the previous year’s LPGA money list/order of merit, and certain other exempt players who have maintained their playing rights, as members of the tour.

Epson Golf Tour

The Epson Tour is the LPGA’s developmental tour, it was founded in 1981. It has changed its name several time over the last two decades due to various sponsors, so you may have heard of it before as the LPGA Futures Tour, the Duramed Futures Tour or even the Symetra Tour.

Get the Golf Monthly Newsletter

Subscribe to the Golf Monthly newsletter to stay up to date with all the latest tour news, equipment news, reviews, head-to-heads and buyer’s guides from our team of experienced experts.

The tour is made up of a series of events played all over the USA (22 in 2023) culminating with a season-ending Epson Tour Championship. This tournament has been played at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina since 2020. The top 10 players on the tour’s money list earn their LPGA Tour card for the next season, and those just outside that mark (the next 24 players) get to improve their status for LPGA Tour Qualifying School.

American Auston Kim is one to watch. She has just won the 2023 Epson Tour Championship and will be hoping to make a fast-start on the LPGA next year. You don’t have to be a professional to play on the tour, it is also open to top-ranked amateurs, many of whom use it as a springboard to turn professional if they successfully earn their card.

Women's All Pro Tour (WAPT)

The Women’s All-Pro Tour is the official qualifying tour for the LPGA’s Epson Tour. Women may participate in the WAPT as a member or as a guest, allowing amateurs as well as professionals to compete. The beauty of this tour is that there are different entry options available.

The women who choose to become full members pay an annual joining fee (less than $700) giving them preferential rates on the entry fees to the individual events, free range balls at tournaments, lunches and practice rounds and other perks. For those interested in competing, but not yet sure whether it’s right for them, they can pay one-off entry fees to the individual events to compete.

In 2023 the tour also introduced a new six-event WAFT Collegiate Series, running from the end of May through to the start of August, as summer preparation before returning to compete in college.

Ladies European Tour (LET)

The Ladies European Tour (LET) was founded in 1978 and has its headquarters at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club on the outskirts of London. There are over 130 players from more than 40 countries internationally competing on the tour, which runs a full-schedule of events (29 in 2023) across five continents.

It is fair to say that the LET has had a very turbulent history, nearly collapsing through lack of sponsorship and funding in the 1980s, leading to tour members forming the Ladies European Tour Limited in 2000.

In January 2020 the LET entered into a joint venture arrangement with the LPGA Tour with the aim of increasing the playing opportunities for female golfers in Europe. With that has come more exposure and sponsorship like the Aramco Team Series .

The LET also organises and runs the Solheim Cup when it is in Europe. Like the LPGA, in order to gain a tour card and playing rights to compete on the LET you have to go through several stages of qualifying school, culminating in Q-School Finals.

Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS)

The Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) is the LET’s developmental tour. It’s been running since 2010 and in that time has produced some notable graduates including English winners Lily May Humphreys and Meghan MacLaren who have both gone onto win on the LET.

The top six players on the LETAS Order of Merit earn LET membership for the Ladies European Tour. Those that just miss out but finish in spots 7-20 get to skip the first stage of the qualifying event and progress straight to Q-School finals.

You don’t have to be a professional golfer to play on LETAS, it’s open to amateur golfers also, as long as you are over the age of 18 and have a handicap of two or better. There were 16 events played in 12 countries across Europe in 2023 with a total tour prize fund purse of just over £720,000.

Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen from Denmark won the 2023 LETAS

Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen from Denmark won the 2023 LETAS

LPGA Of Japan Tour

The LPGA of Japan Tour is a women’s professional golf tour organised by the Japan Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association. It has been running since 1968 and has the second biggest prize purse in women’s golf, just behind the LPGA with $60 million.

There were 38 events played in 2023 all across Japan. Women’s World Golf Hall of Famer Hisako “Chako” Higuchi holds the record for the most prolific wins on the JLPGA of all time with 69 victories spanning over two decades from 1968-1990.

LPGA Of Korea Tour

The KLPGA Tour was catapulted into the global golf spotlight back in 2020 coming out of Covid-19 pandemic, as the KLPGA Championship was the first professional golf event, in the men’s or women’s game to be played since we went into lockdown.

The Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour (KLPGA) is a women’s tour played mainly in South Korea, with one event each played in Vietnam, Taiwan and China. The tour began in 2008 and every year grows in size and popularity with upwards of 30 events on the schedule, the highlight being the KLPGA Championship.

With more than a handful of the world’s top 20 players, a seemingly endless supply of title contenders, including over 30 major winners all hailing from Korea, it’s fair to say that the Korea Tour certainly produces some fine female golfers.

Women’s World top 30 player Min-Ji Park was the tour’s most prolific winner in 2023, with six victories amassing her over $1.4million. Women’s World Number 15 Jiyai Shin had a record-breaking nine victories from 18 starts on the KLPGA Tour in 2007 while still a teenager. Also, reigning Olympic champion Inbee Park , a 7-time Major champion, is one of the South Korean golfers who made a successful start to her career on the KLPGA before graduating to the big-money earning LPGA Tour.

WPGA Tour Of Australasia

Formerly known as the ALPG Tour, as the name suggests, the WPGA Tour of Australasia is a professional golf tour for women which is based in Australia. It was founded in 1972 by the Ladies Professional Golf Association of Australia, although in the early years there were only a handful of events and the tour struggled, it has since gone onto be a big success with over 150 members.

There were 18 tournaments played this season (2022/23) over the Australian summer (between November and March) including the ANZ Ladies Masters, MFS Australian Open and New Zealand Women’s Open, all three co-sanctioned with the LET.

The tour’s most famous graduate is former women’s world number one Karrie Webb , a Golf World Hall of Famer, who was a prolific winner on the WPGA and then subsequently the LPGA - a real global face in women’s golf.

China LPGA Tour

The China LGPA Tour is a professional golf tour for women organised by the China Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association, which has been running since 2008. Although there are only a handful of events played on the China LPGA Tour (13 on the 2023 schedule) thanks to the opportunity to co-sanction many of these with the bigger tours, Chinese golf gets put into the annual spotlight.

In total there are four events co-sanctioned with the LET and one each with the LPGA Tour, the ALPG Tour and the LAGT. Although the number of events is low the prize funds are rich. In fact, in the 2023 Buick LPGA Shanghai event, players were competing for a massive $2.1 million purse. The winner, double Major champion in 2023 American Lilia Vu, took home the top prize of £315,000 along with the champion's trophy.

Sunshine Ladies Tour

The Sunshine Ladies Tour was founded in 2014 with the goal of changing the face of golf in Africa by making the sport more accessible and inclusive to all women. It’s open to professionals and low handicap amateurs and over the last 10 years has consistently provided a pipeline of talent for the world stage.

Through its co-sanctioned events with the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the Sunshine Ladies Tour, a six-week summer swing at the start of the year allows women from over 40 countries worldwide to get their season underway in South Africa. Thanks to the tour’s longstanding partnership with Investec, the top three professionals in the order of merit gain automatic entry into the following year’s Investec South African Women’s Open and the winner receives a bonus prize worth R200,000.

Over the years Carly has been fortunate to play some of the greatest courses in the world. Her view ‘from the ladies tee’ is invaluable. She ranks Sea Island, Georgia, USA, where she met her husband, world-renowned golf coach Dan Frost, among her favourite golf resorts. She has played for both the Dorset and Surrey County Ladies first teams and is known for her excellent track record at matchplay.

Carly holds the ladies course record (68) at her home club Parkstone and her lowest competition round (seven-under-par 65) was carded in the pro-am of the Irish Ladies Open at Killeen Castle, playing alongside Solheim Cup superstar Anna Nordqvist. Although her current handicap index has crept up to 3.7 since Covid she has her sights firmly set on achieving that elusive scratch handicap and hopefully playing for her country when she’s 50.

APGA Tour finds path to greater diversity in golf and ‘an amazing journey’

APGA Tour finds path to greater diversity in golf and ‘an amazing journey’

TUSTIN, Calif. — Imagine planning a road trip to a distant and unfamiliar place. You jump in the car, buckle up, then realize you don’t have GPS or a road map.

That was Ken Bentley 13 years ago when he co-founded the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour. He knew very little about running a golf tour or securing sponsors at that time, but he proceeded anyway because he wanted to create a pathway for more Black golfers to reach the PGA Tour .

With nothing more than good intentions and an unwavering commitment to make positive change, Bentley and some friends joined forces, exchanged ideas, shared their Rolodexes and reached into their own pockets. They then set out on a journey that has been inspirational and impactful.

In just 13 years, the APGA Tour has grown from three tournaments, all on municipal courses, to 18 tournaments that include some PGA Tour venues. It has seen total purses swell from $40,000 in the first year to $1 million this year. It has gone from being out of sight, out of mind to much of the golf world to having the final round of its Farmers Insurance Invitational broadcast live on the Golf Channel.

Bentley was in the Farmers tent when the final round was broadcast for the first time. As was PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

“We had to kind of pinch each other because this was just an unbelievable experience,” Bentley said. “Starting from Rogers Park, an inner-city golf course in Tampa, to being at Torrey Pines on live television was just an amazing journey for our guys.”

Bentley’s goal was much more modest when he set out. Having grown up on tennis courts, he didn’t take up golf until his 40s, so there was a learning curve to understanding the intricacies of the sport and the history behind it. He also was playing catch-up when trying to wrap his mind around putting together a tour.

But he and his board of directors chose to walk by faith, not by sight, believing that progress could be measured in baby steps as much as giant strides — which is ironic considering they have made tremendous gains, including welcoming Black and Brown women to the APGA Tour next year.

“We had no big vision other than to get more African Americans on tour,” Bentley said this week at the APGA Farmers Insurance Fall Series Finale at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. “We felt like if we could have some tournaments, build some camaraderie among the players, the guys would really develop, and it would help to get some of them on the PGA Tour.”

A week on the ground with the APGA, a mini tour like no other

Some people see a problem and wait for others to come up with a solution. Bentley, a former vice president of community affairs and workforce diversity at Nestle USA, and others on the APGA board of directors saw a problem and took action despite acknowledging they did not have all the answers. Their presence was not only wanted but needed.

Golf has been seeking to expand its diversity numbers for years and has established multiple programs for minority youth. APGA is different in that it focuses on adults who possess the talent to pursue a professional career but lack the resources, financial and otherwise.

Many of the 70 members grew up on municipal courses, not the manicured tracks found at private establishments. Some had never been fit for clubs prior to joining the APGA Tour. Outsiders might consider those small things, but they can figure prominently in whether or not a player succeeds.

PGA Tour courses typically are tighter and longer than public tracks. There is an aura about them that can intimidate those who have never played on them. Club fitting is significant because the equipment is tailored to the player’s swing.

“We’re trying to better simulate the PGA course experience,” Bentley said.

association tour d'images

For a time, it seemed they might never get to this point. They struggled to find sponsorships in the early years beyond a relatively small commitment from the tour. That meant even their top-tier members could not focus exclusively on golf because there weren’t enough tournaments to make decent money.

Then in 2018, out of the blue, the PGA Tour called and offered to not only significantly increase its financial support but also provide access to TPC courses so players could come as close to the PGA Tour experience as possible.

“That was a real watershed moment for us,” Bentley said.

Everything took off from there. Jeff Dailey, the former CEO of Famers Insurance, suggested the APGA play one of its tournaments in conjunction with the Farmers Open. The PGA Tour would play on the South Course at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., while the APGA would play on the North Course.

During a news conference at the tournament, Dailey was so impressed with the APGA players he signed them to be brand ambassadors. That was a first for the APGA, as was Farmers’ decision to dedicate a public relations representative to tell the players’ stories, which resulted in more sponsorship opportunities, including a $500,000 pledge from Cisco after its CEO, Chuck Robbins, heard the stories and spoke with Bentley.

“The increase in sponsors made me think about what we really could be like, how big we could really make this,” Bentley said. “Five years ago. we surveyed the players and found that most didn’t get fitted for clubs. They didn’t practice on championship golf courses. They didn’t take lessons from top-level people. Our guys were going to these tournaments with bows and arrows and playing against guys who have machine guns. We were expecting them to compete with these guys, yet they didn’t have the facilities or equipment or, really, all the things you needed to compete.

“So, we started a player development program. We’ve identified 10 or so guys we feel really have a chance to make it on the PGA Tour out of our 70 members, and we give them all the things we feel they need to compete. We give them a launch monitor, pay for lessons, buy equipment, pay for them to play tournaments outside of the APGA Tour, pay for them to go to Q School. We have a sports psychologist. We make a fitness instructor available to them. They now have all the resources available to them to be competitive at the highest levels of golf.”

Among the success stories, Marcus Byrd has earned PGA Tour Americas status for 2024 and is in Q School seeking a Korn Ferry card ; Chase Johnson has made the cut in two PGA Tour events this year and is competing in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship this week; Kamaiu Johnson spent last year on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica circuit after earning APGA Player of the Year honors; Willie Mack spent last year on the Korn Ferry Tour and is currently in Q School; and Tim O’Neal has PGA Tour Champions status.

Where the APGA Tour excels is in understanding and accepting exactly what it is: a tool, a stepping stone. It is not looking for members to hang around for decades. It wants to see them progress. Can a living be made on the APGA Tour? If someone consistently wins, perhaps. But the goal is to climb the ladder.

“This helps you have a financial backing to where you’re not living on your last dollar,” said Troy Taylor, a former Michigan State University standout who has been a professional for four months. “It’s nice to get a paycheck, but you’re here to build your game and move on.”

Added Aaron Grimes, 29, a part-time caddie at Los Angeles Country Club: “If APGA weren’t around, I’d still be pursuing my dream but it would be a lot tougher. Other tours are expensive. You’re paying entry fees of $1,200 or $1,300, which is $800 more than we pay now, and you’re on courses that aren’t nearly as good. So you end up playing fewer events, which hinders your development.”

Bentley looks forward to the day when the PGA Tour looks more reflective of society in general. And while he may not have known exactly what he was doing when he co-founded the APGA Tour, he now has a clear understanding of what he is doing and where he wants to go. Not surprisingly, his vision extends beyond the course itself.

“Our mission still is to change golf and bring greater diversity to the game, but we can impact it in so many different ways,” he said. “If we have 10 or so that we think can make it to the PGA Tour, there are still 50 or 60 guys who can do great in the golf industry even if they’re not on the tour. It always bothered me that when guys left our tour, they went into the financial services industry or stuff outside of golf. Now we’re trying to prepare our guys for careers in golf. That’s a big thing as we move forward.”

No need for a roadmap or GPS when you know where you’re going.

Nelly Korda’s record-tying win streak resonates with Scottie Scheffler, TOUR pros

Despite four wins in five starts, Scottie Scheffler says his run doesn’t compare

Change Text Size

After winning the RBC Heritage in a Monday finish, Scottie Scheffler was asked if he felt a sense of competition between himself and Nelly Korda. It was a fair question, as the top-ranked men’s and women’s players have gone on simultaneous tears this spring. Scheffler has won four of his last five TOUR starts, finishing second in the other, while Korda tied an LPGA record Sunday by winning her fifth straight start at The Chevron Championship.

Yet despite being amidst a historic run as the first player since Tiger Woods (2007-08) to record five straight top-two finishes on TOUR, Scheffler didn’t see his stretch as comparable.

“One of the people here asked me, like, ‘Is this turning into a competition between you and Nelly?’ and I was like, I don't know, man, I think if it's a competition, she's got me pretty beat right now,” Scheffler said Monday. “Five wins in a row … it's pretty special stuff. To win four times in a row and then show up at a major championship and win is extremely impressive. So I'm extremely happy for her.”

Scheffler joked that Korda’s season-opening T16 finish was “just terrible; I can’t believe she did that” – clearly in jest – as the top-ranked women’s pro has since taken flight with victories at the LPGA Drive On Championship, Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, T-Mobile Match Play and The Chevron Championship, the latter four of which have occurred in the last five calendar weeks.

With Sunday’s victory at the LPGA’s first major championship of 2024, Korda tied Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez with wins in five straight LPGA starts. Only three players have authored such streaks on TOUR: Tiger Woods, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan.

Woods won five straight starts across 2007-08, six straight across 1999-2000, and seven straight across 2006-07. Hogan won six straight starts in 1948. Nelson won a record 11 consecutive starts in 1945.

Korda’s run – which Scheffler would’ve paralleled if not for a one-stroke defeat to Stephan Jaeger at last month’s Texas Children’s Houston Open – holds a well-earned spot in golf history. Scheffler and his fellow TOUR pros have taken notice. Wyndham Clark called Korda’s run “amazing” after the RBC Heritage’s final round, and J.T. Poston described it as “hard to fathom.”

Last fall, Korda teamed with Tony Finau at the mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational, finishing T4. Finau came away impressed, in a way foreshadowing what was to come.

"In a sense, to me, I look up to Nelly," Finau said at the time. "Even though she’s younger than me, she’s an incredible golfer. She’s been the No. 1 player in the world in the women’s game, and she’s someone that I think quite frankly a lot of us can still even learn from, even on the men’s side."

After winning the Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday for his eighth TOUR title, Billy Horschel threaded the runs of Korda and Scheffler.

“I had a three-week stretch where I finished second, first, first and I thought I was something special at that time, but what Nelly and Scottie are doing is unreal,” said Horschel.

“I can't imagine that. And over a period of time, not just five weeks in a row, they've done over six, seven, eight weeks. I mean, it's unreal golf. And to think about who they're playing against in today's generation of more talented players and doing what they're still doing, man, I'd say we're not going to see anything like that again, but I'm sure we will. You just have to stand up and applaud them because it's pretty special. You know, as a golf fan, I'm just lucky to be able to see that because at the end of the day, I'm a golf fan at heart.”

And fans have lately witnessed two generational superstars playing some of the best golf possible.

“I think we’ve all seen the golf swing; I wish I could see it more in person,” Scheffler said of Korda. “Obviously some great golf, some historic stuff, and hopefully she keeps it up.”

Nelly Korda Makes It Five in a Row With LPGA Major Title at the Chevron

The world No. 1 won her second career major and joins Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as winners of five straight events.

  • Author: John Schwarb

Make it five in a row for Nelly Korda. With a major exclamation point.

The world No. 1 won the Chevron Championship with a final-round 69 at the Club at Carlton Woods, securing the first LPGA major of the year by two shots and extending the longest win streak in the sport.

Korda, 25, has won five consecutive starts on the LPGA Tour, a feat not achieved since Annika Sorenstam did it in 2004-05 and Nancy Lopez in 1978. And like Sorenstam, Korda bagged a major for win No. 5.

“I can finally breathe now,” she said, before taking the winner's traditional leap into a greenside pond. “That was like the longest back nine of my entire life.”

Jumping into the history books with a cannon ball 💣 @NellyKorda | @Chevron_Golf pic.twitter.com/xcEIQ9FLWD — LPGA (@LPGA) April 21, 2024

Korda plays fast but this major championship Sunday was far from it, and a four-shot lead at the start of the back nine eventually was whittled to one after Maja Stark, playing one group ahead, nearly eagled the par-5 18th but birdied to get to 11 under.

The winning margin was two after Korda poured in a birdie of her own.

“There’s a key in the simplicity I play … sometimes golf can get overcomplicated,” said Korda, whose lucky number is 13 and the Chevron title was her 13th on the LPGA Tour.

It’s been pretty simple for her since late January, when she won the LPGA Drive On Championship in Florida. Then, after sitting out the Tour’s three-event Asian swing, Korda won three times in three consecutive weeks in California, Arizona and Nevada, finally getting a week off last week. She said she didn’t leave her house for the first two days.

But once back at work, she remained focused with the chance to add a second major to her resume. Korda won the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship and her best major finish since had been a third at last year's Chevron.

More rest will have to wait. She’s in the field for next week’s JM Eagle LA Championship at Wilshire Country Club, where a year ago she finished T6 and two shots out of a playoff. Now she’ll be looking for a record sixth straight win.

Anna Bright (L) goes airborne for a point in the Women's pro doubles final, along side partner ... [+] Rachel Rohrabacher

The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA PPA ) continued its three week trek westward, a trip that started the first weekend of April in North Carolina, then went to Houston, and now lands in Los Angeles at the fantastic Los Cab facility in Fountain Valley for the 2024 Veolia Los Cab Open.

Despite the competing US Open event in Florida drawing attention, this event still drew nearly 1,000 players and a solid pro draw. Thanks to fixture congestion and this being “only” a 1,000-point event, there are some key absences, but that usually just means opportunities for new and different players to make surprise runs to the Sunday finals.

Click here for the PickleballBrackets.com home page for the event , where you can get tournament details, draw sheets, and results.

Let’s Recap the action.

Men’s Pro Singles Recap

Connor Garnett broke through and win his first ever pro singles title in Los Angeles.

Huawei’s Pura 70 Ultra Beats iPhone With Pioneering New Feature

Sh gun episode 10 review a powerful finale but not what i was expecting, trump ally warned ex-president about keeping classified docs—over a year before indictment, fbi filing says.

As is the norm, the Men’s Pro Singles draw offered up the most surprises. For the fourth time this season, #1 Ben Johns lost early, this time to teenage sensation Hayden “Big H” Patriquin, who topped him rather easily 6,6 in the round of 16. Three other top seeds fell early: #6 Pablo Tellez was defeated by #37 Quan Do in the round of 32, #23 Roscoe Bellamy took out #4 Tyson McGuffin in the 16s, and #48 Augustus Ge (criminally under seeded) topped #7 Jay Devilliers in the 32s. Donald Young couldn’t follow-up his performance in Houston and lost in the 32s. All in all, four players with double-digit seeds advanced into the quarters.

Patriquin, as often happens, couldn’t follow-up his career win and fell in the next round to #11 Aanik Lohani, a Minnesota-based singles specialist who made the singles final last October in Vegas. Lohani was topped in the semis by #3 Connor Garnett, who has struggled a bit out of the gate in 2024 but who looked solid here in advancing to the Gold medal match Sunday (his first gold medal match of 2024). From the bottom side of the draw, #2 Federico Staksrud blew through his draw, crushing #8 Quang Duong 2,6 in the quarters and then streaking past #23 Bellamy 5,1 in the semis to make his eighth straight gold medal match to open the season.

In the final, fifth time apparently is a charm for Garnett, who won his first ever PPA gold medal (and his first singles gold in five career gold medal matches) by winning a scintillating back and forth match against soon-to-be-number-one Staksrud. Final score: (7),9,4. Bellamy beat Lohani in the Bronze medal match to secure his first ever PPA medal (and just his second ever pro singles medal on any tour).

Of note: Ben’s early loss, combined with #2 Staksrud’s run to the final, should conspire to give Staksrud the #1 overall ranking on tour, knocking Johns out of the #1 spot for the first time since the professional pickleball began. This is a rather seminal moment in the sport, the first real challenge to either of the tour’s dominant #1 players since they came into power. I’m certainly not claiming that Staksrud is “better” than Johns (they’ve met three times in 2024, with Johns winning all three times), but Staksrud’s consistency in making finals will be rewarded, and he is set to be #1 on tour for some time.

Gold : Connor Garnett. Silver : Federico Staksrud. Bronze : Roscoe Bellamy

Women’s Pro Singles Recap

Brooke Buckner dominates the final to win her first ever gold medal.

The top contenders on the Women’s singles circuit continue to have up-and-down results during the absence of the two top players. #1 Mary Brascia, who was upset in the first round last week, advanced to the quarters before falling to #8 Kaitlyn Christen. #21 Christine Maddox, former Tennis All American from Pepperdine, continues to get solid wins, topping #7 Dominique Schaefer in the 16s before falling in the quarters. Meanwhile, #3 Lauren Stratman (who fell to newly converted pickleball pro Genie Bouchard last week early, played like a new woman and blew through her draw to make the final from the top side of the draw.

The bottom half featured a great run from #29 Layne Sleeth, who up until a couple of weeks ago was an unknown in the pro pickleball community. Sleeth, who made the NCAA tennis singles final in June of 2023 and was named an All American, recently converted to pickleball and was drafted in the MLP Challenger division by the Brooklyn Aces almost entirely based on her potential. Here, she took out #29 Michelle Esquivel, then #4 Irina Tereschenko, then #14 Nicole Eugenio before falling in the quarters to #5 Brooke Buckner. Buckner continued her own success in LA, topping #6 Lacy Schneemann in the semis to secure her first ever gold medal appearance.

The ladies pro final would guarantee a first time gold medalist, irrespective of who won. Furthermore, it would also guarantee a best-ever pro singles result for the loser. Neither Buckner or Stratman had ever even made a gold medal Sunday match before. When the match got down to it, Buckner held firm mentally and came out on top with an 8,0 win.

Gold : Brooke Buckner. Silver : Lauren Stratman. Bronze : Kaitlyn Christen.

Mixed Pro Doubles Recap

In Waters’ absence, Ben Johns picked up the next logical candidate, that being Anna Bright (ranked #2 in Mixed Pro doubles for the ladies), whose normal partner James Ignatowich remains sidelined to recover from a shoulder injury. The pair showed the tour what things might look like if a Johns-ALW split were to ever occur, cruising through the top-half of the draw and winning 3,2 in the semis to secure a Sunday final appearance. Two time defending finalist Tina Pisnik couldn’t repeat the feat since her partner in crime for those two runs (Dekel Bar) was absent, but she picked up Collin Johns and made a great run to the semis before falling to the #1 seeds.

The bottom half of the pro draw went almost perfectly chalk from the round of 16 onwards, resulting in a great #2 vs #3 seed semi between two great teams for a shot at the gold medal. There, #2 Vivienne David & Thomas Wilson continue to show their mettle as a mixed partnership, cruising past #3 Megan Dizon & Tyson McGuffin easily 9,2 to make the Sunday final.

In the final, David & Wilson were the ones to keep their mental game attuned, grinding out points and playing more consistently than their opponents across the net, winning a tactical masterpiece in four games 11,8,(8),3.

In the bronze, Tina Pisnik & Collin Johns took out Tyson McGuffin & Megan Dizon 6,5 for the victory. This is Pisnik’s third straight podium in Mixed Pro doubles, a pretty big statement for a player who barely played until this season. Meanwhile, Collin Johns, with this bronze, wins his first EVER PPA medal that didn’t include him standing next to his brother in Pro Doubles. Collin often gets maligned for being second fiddle to his brother all these years, but this result shows that he can play the left and win, a big worry for MLP premier teams.

Gold : David & Wilson. Silver : Bright & Johns. Bronze : Pisnik & Johns

Men’s Pro Doubles Recap

The cream rose to the top at the beginning stages of the Men’s Pro Doubles draw in LA, with just one minor upset by seed occurring in the round of 32 (#17 Roscoe Bellamy & Todd Fought beating #15 Brandon French & Collin Shick), and just one minor upset by seed occurring in the round of 16 (#9 Travis Rettenmaier & Zane Navratil topping #8 Hayden Patriquin & Callan Dawson). But the #9 team had bigger plans this weekend. Looking to build on a strong showing last weekend, Rettenmaier and Navratil took it to the #2 seeds Matt Wright & Thomas Wilson in the quarters and moved on in an 11-8 third game win. They were unable to keep up with #4 Tyson McGuffin & Jaume Martinez Vich in the semis though, but salvaged the bronze medal on the weekend to give Rettenmaier his first Men’s Pro medal on tour in nearly a year.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise team from the top half that made some noise this weekend. #7 Connor Garnett teamed up with lefty Augustus Ge and shocked the #3 seeds Federico Staksrud & Pablo Tellez 7,3 in the quarters to earn a spot against the top dogs in the semis. Garnett & Ge took game one against the #1 seeded Johns brothers, but couldn’t finish the task and headed home at the semis juncture.

This set up a fascinating Sunday final between #1 Johns & Johns and #4 McGuffin & Vich. The fourth seeds, dressed in black in the California heat, adopted a firepower-heavy approach against the Johns brothers, attacking with abandon. 3rd shot drives, shake and bakes, speed-ups off the bounce, the entire attacking arsenal was on display, and at times the Johns brothers looked rattled. The final went five games, and it took until game five for the #1 team to take control, but they ended up on top. Vich looked fantastic, playing mostly on the left with McGuffin and having pundits wonder ... how did he fall to MLP challenger?

Gold : Johns & Johns. Silver : McGuffin & Vich. Bronze : Rettenmaier & Navratil

Women’s Pro Doubles Recap

With ALW and Parenteau’s month-long hiatus from touring, #1 Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher continue to impress. They dominated the early rounds of the event, dominated #5 Tina Pisnik & Jessie Irvine in the quarters, and ground out a 9,4 win over the #8 Brascia sisters in the semis to earn a spot in the gold medal match for the 4th time in the last 5 events.

Meanwhile, #6 Lacy Schneemann & Vivian Glozman went on a tear from the bottom half, starting with an impressive win over #10 Irina Tereschenko & Christine Maddox in the round of 16. From there, they took out #3 Lea Jansen & Lucy Kovalova in a hard-fought 11-8 third game win in the quarters. They followed this up with a tight two game win 13-11, 12-10 over #2 Meghan Dixon & Etta Wright to earn a spot in the Sunday final.

Gunning for a rare feat (wins over #1, #2, and #3 in the same event), Schneemann & Glozman took on Bright & Rohrabacher in the gold medal match, but the #1 pair proved too much, dominating the match and winning 5,5,5. It is Bright & Rohrabacher’s 4th gold medal in the last five events, and with this win Bright will take over #1 in Season-to-Date Women’s Pro doubles rankings on tour. The pair still has a ways to go to overtake ALW & Parenteau for the top spot on tour, but if they keep winning their opportunities the points race will be very tight come November.

Gold : Bright & Rohrabacher. Silver : Schneemann & Glozman. Bronze : Dizon & Wright.

Senior Competition Quick Recap

There were two Senior Open event competed in LA, with most of the senior pros still in Naples for the US Open.

  • Men’s Senior Open Singles: #2 Morgan Shephard topped #1 Matthias Johansson in the final. Johansson pulls off the rare feat of medaling in two pro events in the same week, having won the Bronze at the US Open earlier in the week on the other coast.
  • Men’s Senior Open Doubles: Craig Riley & Mark Hamilton took the 10-team Senior open competition as the #3 seed.

The Pro Pickleball Medal Tracker has now been updated with these results; check out this link online for a complete pro medal history for all tours and all pro events dating to the beginnings of all the major pro tours, plus pro events that predated 2020.

Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule , the PPA has one more stop in April before its staff can sleep, heading north to Utah for the 2024 Red Rock Open in St. George. It’s an annual event at a very small town in Utah that has been the site of some pro surprises over the years, and I’m sure this year will be no different.

Young Tour Stars Lead the Chevron Championship After 36 Holes

International golf federation celebrates 100 days until olympic golf at paris 2024.

Atthaya Thitikul

LPGA Tour rookie Jin Hee Im and 21-year-old Thai star Atthaya Thitikul share the 36-hole lead (-8) at The Chevron Championship after both shot 69-67 through the first two days at The Club at Carlton Woods. Heading into the second round, the two were T5 and three strokes out of Lauren Coughlin’s first-round lead before a bogey-free day from Im and a six-birdie, one-bogey round for Thitikul put the young players on top of the leaderboard heading into Moving Day.

Im is making her first-ever start in a major championship this week in The Woodlands and is now holding her first-ever lead or co-lead on the LPGA Tour. The 25-year-old earned Tour status for the 2024 season after finishing T17 at LPGA Q-Series in December. But even though she is a rookie, the Korean player has plenty of experience winning professional golf tournaments. Im is a six-time winner on the KLPGA Tour, earning four of those wins just last season.

“Everything was good last year (on the KLPGA), and I know the courses pretty well.  I played there five years,” said Im on her success in 2023. When asked why she chose to enter Q-Series to test her skill on the LPGA Tour, she said, “In KLPGA they retire a little bit earlier than --the players, they retire a little bit earlier than the LPGA, so I tried to play more in here. I want the challenge (of) more big tour. That's why I tried LPGA.”

So far this season, Im has played in just three events on Tour with a season-best finish of T27 at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. While that may seem like too few starts, Thitikul has even less in 2024. The 2022 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year is making her first appearance of the season here at The Chevron Championship, having recently recovered from a thumb injury that began a few weeks after the 2023 CME Group Tour Championship and was resolved just three weeks ago, according to Thitikul. Leaning on good memories from her T4 finish in last year’s playing of the major, Thitikul made up for lost time and made sure to appreciate the opportunity to compete on Tour.

“I think the rest now like is just a bonus for me. I mean, coming here this week I think making the cut is -- it's good enough because, you know, I wasn't be out here for so long,” she said. “Starting my season with major week is -- it's not that easy, so I think from now on it's just a bonus for me.  Just go out there, staying positive, and then also being out there smiling and then just do my best.”

Im was one of five players to go bogey-free on Friday, making birdie on three of the four par-5s (Nos. 4, 8 and 13) and carding two more on 6 and 17. Thitikul went out in 33 thanks to birdies on 5, 7 and 8, and then went birdie-bogey-birdie on 13, 14 and 15. She finished with a birdie on the par-5 18th to take the second 36-hole lead or co-lead of her Tour career. The last time she led after 36 holes, she won the 2022 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.

Four-time 2024 Tour winner Nelly Korda sits one stroke back of Thitikul and Im at -7. She shot a second-round 69 on Friday and is one of just three players to post two rounds in 60s this week, along with the leaders. Korda is coming off her third-straight LPGA Tour victory and fourth in consecutive starts on Tour. With a win this week, she will tie Annika Sorenstam’s and Nancy Lopez’s record for most wins in consecutive starts on the LPGA Tour.  Although she is looking to add her name into the history books, Korda recognized there’s still a lot of golf left to play.

“I'm just at the halfway point right now. The amount of golf that I've played, I still have that to go,” said Korda when asked how she is handling the pressure of her historic run. “There is still a lot of golf left and anything can happen. Just going to stick to my process and ‘vibe with it,’ is what my coach says.”

Last season’s Rolex Rookie of the Year, Hae Ran Ryu, sits in solo fourth at -6. First-round leader Lauren Coughlin couldn’t find her opening-round rhythm but remains in the top-5 after a shooting a 1-over 73 on Friday. She shares the T5 spot with four other players including Sweden’s Maja Stark, Japan’s Minami Katsu, Korea’s Shinsil Bang, and Weiwei Zhang of the Republic of China. Sponsor exemption and the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Open champion Lottie Woad sits in a tie for 10th with seven other players at -4.

Seventy-three players made the cut at +2 following Friday’s round. Notables to miss the cut are past champions Patty Tavatanakit (2021), Jin Young Ko (2019), Pernilla Lindberg (2018), Lexi Thompson (2014), Stacy Lewis (2011), Yani Tseng (2010) and So Yeon Ryu (2017), who announced her retirement from the LPGA Tour following The Chevron Championship.

“I wanted to make sure this week is like celebrate week, not sad week. It's been very touching. Like a lot of people just came up to me and then congrats me and then give all the warm word to me. I just feel very blessed. You cannot really have this feeling often. Maybe this is my first and last. So I really tried my best to enjoy like all the thing. Even out there I tried to enjoyed having a thrill tee shot, tough chip shot, the nervousness when I had a birdie putt kind of stuff,” said Ryu. “I think I'm very satisfied with my week.”
