TOURNAMENT RESULTS

{{tournament.sponsortitle}}, player results, rublev returns to turin: always humble, always fighting.

Andrey Rublev has won two tour-level titles during the 2023 season.

Most elite athletes thrive behind supreme confidence, their self-belief — justified or not — willing them to achieve the impossible.

Andrey Rublev is built different. For any fans who have seen the unique 26-year-old’s affable off-court demeanor, that will come as no surprise. But Rublev is very much his own man inside the lines as well.

This season, when he won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo, he battled back from 1-4, 0/30 in the third set to defeat Holger Rune in the final. What was going through his head as the Dane was pulling away?

“That it was over,” Rublev told the ATP Tour’s cameras earlier this season. “It was over, but at least try to play, not to give up. You never know, maybe somehow there will be one chance to come back and maybe somehow you will be lucky and you will make it.”

In the end, Rublev found a way through — though luck had little to do with it. After two previous defeats in ATP Masters 1000 finals, he was brought to tears upon claiming the elusive crown on the Monaco clay.

The trophy carried added significance after recent changes to Rublev’s coaching team. While Fernando Vicente, Rublev’s primary coach since 2016, remained in his role, there was a major shakeup beyond that before the start of the season.

“In the beginning of the year, I was feeling that I was doing good things in the practices. But I was not wining something big, so you still have weird feelings,” Rublev said of the new setup, speaking in a recent interview with ATPTour.com.

“And then Monte-Carlo just gave me the confidence that the work that I was doing was the right way. Then some results later and Shanghai [reaching the final] proved that the team that I have, the practices that I'm doing, this is the way I was looking for and I have to do it with even more confidence.”

2023 ATP Awards | And The Nominees Are...

Rublev has proven many times he can beat the world’s best. He has 23 wins against the Top 10, including a victory against current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. In early November at the Rolex Paris Masters, he nearly earned a second win against the Serbian, but fell just short in a semi-final match of the highest quality

"Rublev was suffocating me like a snake suffocates a frog for most of the match," Djokovic said after a dramatic 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5 victory. "He was playing an extremely high level that he possesses, but today he was off the charts, honestly. I don’t think I’ve ever faced Rublev this good."

Prior to that meeting, when asked what he would need to do to beat the Serbian at the Nitto ATP Finals, Rublev maintained his humble attitude.

“I need to play my best match and he needs to play his worst match,” he said, later repeating the same answer when asked about his chances against Carlos Alcaraz.

There is no doubt Rublev will need to be firing on all cylinders at his fourth Nitto ATP Finals appearance, where he will be one champion among eight of the ATP Tour’s best. But by keeping his expectations low, he may be setting the stage for his biggest title yet.

“It kind of takes out the pressure,” Rublev said. “Of course, if I play [Djokovic or Alcaraz], I will do my best to try to compete against them and to have a chance to try to win it. But it's super tough, and they're better than me and they show it already for many years. So we'll see. For this I need to really, really to play my best tennis.”

That’s exactly what Rublev did last season in Turin, when he made the semi-finals by coming from a set down to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in a winner-takes-all group finale. Like in the Monte-Carlo final, Rublev was overwhelmed by a strong start from his opponent and harboured little hope of a comeback. But that did not stop him from fighting, and that fight yielded another one of the biggest wins in his career.

“It was a great moment to be in the semi-finals at one of the best tournaments of tennis,” he reflected, nearly one year later. “To be part of it was special. I remember when I won, the emotions were crazy.”

But rather than let that memory inflate his ego, Rublev was quick to point out the rare air in which he found himself after the win.

“It's not going to happen often,” he said, looking ahead to the possibility of another deep run in Turin. “Of course I will do everything to be able to feel this emotion again. But we'll see.

"There is all the best players. Everyone wants to win and everyone is playing unreal."

Andrey Rublev vs Alexei Popyrin preview

Defending champion Andrey Rublev will take on Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

Rublev captured his 15th career title at the start of the year at the Hong Kong Open. He then made it to the quarterfinals of his next three tournaments, including the Australian Open.

Rublev bucked the trend as he reached the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. He was then defaulted towards the end of his match against Alexander Bublik due to unsportsmanlike conduct.

Rublev's results took a hit after that as he bowed out of the Indian Wells Masters in the third round and was eliminated in the second round of the Miami Open. As the sixth seed at the Monte-Carlo Masters, he received a bye into the second round.

Popyrin was drawn against Corentin Moutet in his opener here. The Australian was on the back foot for most of the first set, which eventually slipped out of his grasp after getting broken twice.

The two were on even footing for most of the second set until Popyrin broke the impasse. He broke Moutet's serve in the 11th game of the set to go 6-5 up, after which he served out the set himself.

Popyrin was in control of the match by now as he started the decider with a break of serve. He maintained the lead and snagged another break towards the end of the match to score a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.

Andrey Rublev vs Alexei Popyrin head-to-head

Rublev leads Popyrin 1-0 in the head-to-head. He won their previous encounter at the 2023 Vienna Open in straight sets.

Andrey Rublev vs Alexei Popyrin prediction

Popyrin did well to turn things around against Moutet in the first round. He upped the intensity as the match went on and blasted a total of 51 winners by the end of it.

Popyrin has improved quite a bit on clay in the past year. He had a 5-10 record on the surface until 2022 but improved to 16-16 by the end of 2023. This was due to his fourth-round finish at the Italian Open and a maiden title on clay at the Croatia Open.

Rublev has lost some steam after a strong start to the season. He was way off the mark in his last couple of events. While Popyrin has figured out a way to play better on the red dirt, the Russian has still performed miles better than him on the surface.

The Australian has never made it past the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters either. While Rublev appears to be in shaky form, he should be able to figure out a way to begin his title defense with a win.

Pick : Andrey Rublev to win in three sets.

Monte-Carlo Masters 2024: Andrey Rublev vs Alexei Popyrin preview, head-to-head, prediction, odds and pick

Did Andrey Rublev get rough justice after extraordinary disqualification in Dubai?

Andrey Rublev defaulted in Dubai after angry outburst

There is no doubt that Andrey Rublev pushed the boundaries with his latest angry outburst against the officials, but did he deserve to be defaulted in Dubai?

World No 5 Andrey Rublev was sensationally defaulted after being accused of swearing at a line judge in the deciding set of his semi-final against Alexander Bublik.

The combustible Russian was trailing 6-5 in the third against Bublik when he approached the line judge and screamed at him after he failed to call out a ball that was close to the baseline.

ATP supervisor Roland Herfel came down to the court accompanied by a Russian speaker, who claimed Rublev had sworn in his native language.

Rublev protested, insisting he was speaking in English, while Bublik also backed his opponent.

“I didn’t say ‘f******’. I swear to God. This is huge. I swear to God,” said Rublev.

The offence would usually merit a warning in the first instance, but the 26-year-old was defaulted by umpire Miriam Bley amid jeers from the crowd in Dubai.

It was a controversial end to a tight match, with Kazakhstan’s Bublik progressing to the final 6-7 (4) 7-6 (5) 6-5.

While there is no doubt that Rublev was wrong to confront the lines judge in the manner he did, the consequences of his action may also be called into question as the dust settles on one of the most explosive incidents of the tennis year.

Under the Rules and Regulations of tennis, when a player violates a rule or does not follow the tennis code of conduct, the umpire or tournament official can issue one of the following (Section IV, Article C, Item 18 – “Unsportsmanlike Conduct”):

  • Point Penalty
  • Suspension Point

A third code of conduct offence can lead to a default, but Rublev did not go through that process before he was told his time in Dubai was finished by ATP supervisor Herfel.

Rublev was defaulted using the evidence presented by the line judge, but he was adamant he did not make the comment that led to his removal from the tournament.

What comes next in this story will be fascinating, as there is a possibility that Rublev will be stripped of his prize money and maybe even his ranking points following his disqualification.

Andrey Rublev is defaulted from the Dubai semi-final, sending Alexander Bublik through to the #DDFTennis final pic.twitter.com/tclfcXxDYY — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) March 1, 2024

That fate suffered by Alexander Zverev after he was disqualified from a tournament in Mexico in 2022 may be a sign of what is to come for Rublev.

Zverev was initially fined $40,000 and stripped of his prize money and ranking points after his angry outburst.

That punishment was later upgraded by a further $25,000 fine and a suspended eight-week ban from the ATP Tour after an investigation by tennis chiefs.

If Rublev is convinced he did not mutter the words that saw him thrown out in Dubai, he could consider a legal appeal against the decision that could lead to a huge problem for ATP chiefs.

What is not in doubt is the need for Rublev to find a way to control his anger issues, as he confirmed in an exclusive interview with Tennis365 last December.

“You work on it every day,” Rublev told Tennis365. “There are many things in life that are stressing us out and make us very angry.

“You can practise how to be calm when you want to explode everything. Then my coach has the psychology lessons.

Very unfair that they disqualify Rublev without first ensuring that what the line judge understood is correct. That rule should be reviewed and changed. Shameful. We need VAR in tennis. @AndreyRublev97 @atptour — Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (@alexdavidovich1) March 1, 2024

“I have lost some matches because of myself. That is the reality and that makes it harder.

“To play your best you need a clear mind, but my emotions don’t always let me do that. I know I need to work on it, but it is not easy.

“I want to improve mentally and be ready for those big moments of majors to take my chances when I face the same opponent again.

“At this level, it’s not about tennis, it’s about little details like who is more mentally ready in that moment and who’s feeling better on that day.”

We might have heard the last of Rublev’s extraordinary exit from the tournament in Dubai, as the emotional tightrope he has been walking on the ATP Tour for the last few years finally saw him take a tumble.

Andrey Rublev ousted in second round of Monte Carlo Masters

MONACO -- Defending champion Andrey Rublev was knocked out of the Monte Carlo Masters in a 6-4 6-4 second-round loss to Australian Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday, and world No. 2 Jannik Sinner eased through his first test.

Popyrin broke in the third game of the first set, but Rublev broke to take a 3-1 lead in the second, only for the Australian to hit back immediately.

A further break made it 5-4 to Popyrin, and he held serve to reach the third round for the first time. Russian fifth seed Rublev had received a bye into the second round.

"The idea was not to give him the same ball," Popyrin said.

"He is probably the best player from the baseline when you give him rhythm, so I tried to change the pace, height and spin and I think it worked really well for me today."

Popyrin will face fellow Australian Alex De Minaur next, after the 11th seed beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 2-6 6-2 6-3.

Italian Sinner, who won his first major title at the Australian Open in January, eased into the third round with a 6-1 6-2 win over American Sebastian Korda .

Korda won their last meeting, in Adelaide last year, but was no match for the in-form Sinner, who also won this year's Miami Open and Rotterdam Open.

Sinner, who broke Korda in the opening game of the match and was never threatened, will next meet German Jan-Lennard Struff who he beat at Indian Wells in March.

Russian fourth seed Daniil Medvedev came through against Gael Monfils 6-2 6-4, but was given a tough test by the French 37-year-old in the second set.

Monfils led 4-1, however, Medvedev recovered and won five games in a row to avoid a third set, but not before a disagreement with the chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani.

The Russian was clearly angry with a decision, whacking the umbrella over his seat, and when Lahyani said he would apologise if he was wrong, it only increased Medvedev's frustration.

"How can you apologize, I lost the freaking game, it's a freaking sport man. You guys are getting ridiculous, with the Hawk Eye live you don't see anything," Medvedev said.

After the game, Medvedev shook hands and apologized to the umpire, and later explained the situation.

"I am happy I managed to at one moment try to stay calm, to get my composure, that's what I wanted to do more this year," he said.

"There are going to be moments when I still go crazy... but I am 99% sure the ball was out. It's a pity because I would have won the game and maybe I win 6-2, but I am happy that even from 4-1, I managed to come back and win the set."

Norwegian eighth seed Casper Ruud beat Chile's Alejandro Tabilo 6-2 6-4 and will meet Hubert Hurkacz in the third round after the Pole came through 7-5 7-6(4) against Roberto Bautista Agut .

Two-time champion Stefanos Tsitsipas , the 12th seed, also reached the third round after crushing Tomas Etcheverry of Argentina 6-1 6-0 and will next face German fifth seed Alexander Zverev .

French 14th seed Ugo Humbert defeated China's Zhang Zhizhen 6-1 6-4, and will face Lorenzo Sonego in the third round after the Italian, brought in as a lucky loser to replace the injured Carlos Alcaraz , beat Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4 7-5.

Andrey Rublev Australian Open

The ATP Monte Carlo 2024 edition signals the beginning of the European clay court Masters 1000 series. It is a jam-packed draw with almost all top players competing. As ever, we at LWOT preview and predict matches scheduled for Day 4.

ATP Monte Carlo Day 4 Predictions

Ugo humbert vs zhizhen zhang.

Head to head – Humbert 1-0 Zhang

Ugo Humbert is having a decent 2024 season having already won two titles. The Frenchman is a solid player on the clay as well but hasn’t quite lit up the courts as he has on the hard courts. He takes on Zhizhen Zhang, who played a good match to win his first round. While not much will separate the two from the baseline, Humbert’s powerful serve should help him put his forehand into play a lot easier and that will prove crucial. Prediction: Humbert in 2

Roberto Bautista Agut vs Hubert Hurkacz

Head to head – Bautista Agut 3-2 Hurkacz

Interestingly, in their previous five meetings, they have never met on the clay. Hubert Hurkacz would be feeling great after his win in Estoril last week and the tight first round win here should put him in a battle hardened state. He faces Roberto Bautista Agut, the veteran Spaniard who is showing he still has a few years left in him. Bautista Agut has done well to qualify but currently, the Pole looks too strong both on serve and from the baseline. Prediction: Hurkacz in 2

Sumit Nagal vs Holger Rune

Head to head – Nagal 0-1 Rune

Holger Rune will be happy to be back on the clay . The Dane has had a middling season by his standards and these next few months may make or break his 2024 campaign. He takes on the qualifier from India, Sumit Nagal who has impressed with his fighting tennis this week. Rune will be wary of Nagal but once he hits his groove, there looks to be a gap in the shot quality and the Dane should triumph. Prediction: Rune in 2

Alexei Popyrin vs Andrey Rublev

Head to head – Popyrin 0-1 Rublev

This is an interesting match up. Andrey Rublev is a handful on clay but Alexei Popyrin strikes pretty big himself so the baseline rallies should be a treat to watch. The Australian generally doesn’t play his best on the clay which would easily be exploited by Rublev. Expect a tight match between the two with Popyrin starting strong but as Rublev finds his range, he should motor along quite nicely here this week. Prediction: Rublev in 3

Sinner looks smooth on clay at Monte Carlo Masters. Defending champion Rublev loses

MONACO — After dominating on aggressive hard courts, Jannik Sinner made a smooth transition to softer clay by beating Sebastian Korda 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

But defending champion Andrey Rublev was eliminated after a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Alexei Popyrin.

The second-seeded Sinner won 95% of points on his first serve and saved all three break points in improving his record to 23-1 this year. He has three titles in 2024, including the Australian Open — his first major trophy — and recently the Miami Open .

“I moved quite well in these conditions,” said the 22-year-old Italian, who reached the semifinals at Monte Carlo last year. “Every year it is tough to come here and perform well but I am happy with the performance.”

Sinner faces Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday in the third round, where he will join two-time champions Novak Djokovic — who won on Tuesday — and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 12th-seeded Tsitsipas routed Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1, 6-0 and next faces No. 5 Alexander Zverev in a contest between big servers. Djokovic takes on unseeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

The sixth-seeded Rublev dropped his serve three times against Popyrin, who next faces No. 11 Alex de Minaur in an all-Australian contest at the Monte Carlo Country Club , which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.

“I am feeling really comfortable on (clay) and happy to beat a guy who was in form, confident and the defending champ,” Popyrin said. “It was an awesome match.”

De Minaur rallied past unseeded Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who is chasing his first title of the year, won 6-2, 6-4 against French veteran Gaël Monfils, and two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud — seeded eighth — downed Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-4.

Later Wednesday, last year’s runner-up Holger Rune faced qualifier Sumit Nagal of India and No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov played Miomir Kecmanovic.

Also in the second round, there were wins for No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz, No. 14 Ugo Humbert, No. 15 Karen Khachanov and lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego, who replaced the injured Carlos Alcaraz after the Spaniard pulled out on Tuesday with a right forearm injury.

Record 11-time Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal pulled out with a lingering injury before the tournament.
