Can Better Design Redeem the Cruise Ship?

Portrait of Justin Davidson

I found Virgin Voyages’ new cruise ship Scarlet Lady lolling just offshore from downtown Miami. She beckoned with her streaks of lipstick red, so I walked toward her, across the bridge and into the port (which is a little like walking to La Guardia : possible but not usual), and doubled back, trudging through a sea of parking lots. As I approached the company’s blindingly white, week-old terminal, the ship reared behind it, deck upon glassed-in deck, like a newly sprouted waterfront condo that had drifted across Biscayne Bay. I had come to examine this vast floating object designed to transport thousands into a multi-day fantasy of the yachtsman’s life. A cruise ship is a machine for leisure, and I wanted to know how it worked.

Scarlet Lady represents the first phase in Virgin’s expansion from air, land, and space into sea. A near-identical copy, Valiant Lady , will start sailing from Barcelona in May, and two more are in the works. With a capacity of 2,700 passengers and 1,160 crew, these $700 million babies are not the biggest, fanciest, or costliest of their ilk, but they may be the most fanatically designed. As soon as I stepped onboard (nose swabbed, vaccine cards shown, mask in place), I saw that hardly a square inch had been left to negligence or chance. The elevator waiting areas had no interest, and glimpses into areas where the crew lurks suggested that, as with all theatrical settings, the back-of-house is bare and basic. But the rest of the fit-out manifested the efforts of a dozen architecture and design teams, all managed by Virgin’s chief cat herder, Dee Cooper. Her job was to align all these different creative spirits with the corporate brand — to patrol the border between bold and tacky, obvious and crazy.

And so the jogging track runs along its own red-steel catwalk (by Concrete Amsterdam) elevated above the main deck, the better to avoid collisions and the vibrations of pounding heels. Hammocks, hand-woven in Thailand from flameproof synthetic cable, hang everywhere, combining contemporary relaxation technology with a soupçon of Moby-Dick . Both the cardio gym and the weight room have views of the boundless ocean, so you can feel small while you get big. On the VIP-only deck, dichroic glass panels throw multicolored glimmers on the white lounge beds. Diners can choose between the chrome-and-glass skinny chic of Test Kitchen (“part cooking school and part restaurant”), designed by Concrete Amsterdam; the indigo-and-violet moods of the haute Mexican restaurant Pink Agave, by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio; and a fistful of other food habitats. Roman and Williams’ The Manor is a soothing forest-green den, perfect for a quiet old-fashioned — until you walk through a knockoff of a Yayoi Kusama “Infinity Mirror Room,” with stars glittering above below and all around, and into the sensory-overload nightclub. Inviting textures pop up everywhere: plush ottomans, metal partitions that look like they’ve been perforated by a machine gun and beaten with hammers, acres of fake leather, fake wood, synthetic moiré hangings, and assorted other materials that give the impression of luxe while also meeting the fire code’s requirements for industrial toughness. Virgin has virtually eliminated cheap primary-colored plastic with two sweeping prohibitions: no single-use disposable containers and no passengers younger than 18. In the company’s branded universe (though not in the real world), adult apparently means sophisticated .

virgin cruise ship design

Designing a cruise ship is an idiosyncratic challenge, a mixture of technical givens and carefree pleasure. As in hospitals, bridges, and oil rigs, the overall structure and minute details are governed by engineering, efficiency, safety, and cost. Unlike those facilities, though, the function of a cruise ship is enjoyment (or rather, the profit that flows from providing enjoyment). The trick is to make passengers feel like they’ve been handed an all-access pass to 110,000 tons’ worth of luxury, freedom, and self-indulgence. And so a cruise ship is a complete habitat, its culture constant, its boundaries clear and absolute, its population flowing in and out in regular tidal patterns. At sea, it provides plenty of food and comfort but no escape, which raises the stakes on each design decision.

The Scarlet Lady has a reserve of regal suites pushed out over the bow, each with an expansive terrace. Most of the cabins, though, are tight, with strokes of glamorous lighting and clever design — beds that swivel into sofas, for example — to compensate for the scant square footage. That’s deliberate, both because it increases the number of passengers (“sailors” in Virgin parlance) who can be packed onboard and because it nudges them out into public areas to mingle and drink. But people have different appetites for crowds and rowdiness, and designers had to accommodate all-night dance-partiers, slot-machine aficionados, and those who prefer to spend their evenings murmuring over a cocktail. Even on the outdoor decks, where there is nothing much to do besides lie in the sun and drink, passengers can search out varying degrees of intimacy or public display. In that sense, a ship is a miniature city.

As I toured the various levels, guided up stairs and around corners by Virgin staff so that my sense of the layout grew ever shakier, I saw that exploration is part of the shipboard experience . The interlocked designs must be complex enough to provide multiple routes and destinations, but simple enough to avoid frustrating disorientation. The result is that the decks and bars where the indolent can spend all day in near immobility are also transit points for the restless. That makes a ship like this an eavesdropper’s paradise. It’s engineered so that you can look down on people who forget there’s anything above them but open sky. Privacy is always partial.

I am not the cruise industry’s target audience. Spending days on a floating version of a Las Vegas hotel in order to share a beach with the same several thousand traveling companions who crowd the onboard hot tubs, the slot machine, and the bottomless dinner plate — this is not my idea of a good time. Sea monsters like Royal Caribbean’s new 7,000-passenger Wonder of the Seas strike me as a manifestation of the global addiction to bigness, the malady that has bloated pickups , stretched skyscrapers, widened highways, blocked the Suez Canal , engorged stadiums , jammed Ottawa with 18-wheelers, and even supersized demolitions . Cruise ships pollute the places they visit and, over the years, have battered Venice so badly that the government had to (sort of) ban them from the lagoon. And then there’s the efficiency with which the shipboard lifestyle promotes a lively assortment of respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses .

Even so, I’m impressed by the imaginative range of this self-contained world, and though I’d probably start eyeing the lifeboats after the first 24 hours, I get the appeal of suspending reality. With all its mood-lit nooks and carefully constructed ambiances, Scarlet Lady is a set on which passengers can act out the scripts they write for themselves. A cruise depends on a stack of brittle illusions: that food is free, rather than prepaid; that wood is wood; that the pool is a pool, rather than a wading tub a few inches deep. (A volume of water large enough to swim in would have to be placed down in the hold, not an upper deck, to avoid destabilizing the vessel.) And so if the ship has a heart it can perhaps be found in the Red Room, the versatile theater designed by WORKac. It, too, can be whatever performers want it to be. Seats get deployed on movable risers, the stage retracts, an overhead lighting grid can shine on any corner, and the walls — red, layered, backlit, and wavy — contribute to the excitement. “You might see a fashion show with the audience on both sides, then come back for a rock concert with a mosh pit, and the next night it’s a regular theater,” says Dan Wood, one of the firm’s founders.

Wood and his partner (in life and business), Amale Andraos, had lofty goals for their first foray into ship design. Before getting the assignment nearly a decade ago, Wood had coincidentally taught an architecture studio inspired by Le Corbusier’s fascination with ocean liners in the 1920s . The guru of modern architecture aspired to translate the streamlined efficiency of naval design into onshore housing. A century later, Wood saw cruise ships as deeply democratic places, where people of many races, ages, and economic classes come together, potentially a source of lessons for the contemporary city.

When it came time to work on an actual vessel, Wood and Andraos hoped to push the core technologies toward greater sustainability, an effort as paradoxical as the concept of clean coal. “We were asking whether we could reinvent a system at that scale,” Andraos says. “But that ship had sailed.” They soon discovered that cruise-ship design is shackled by a matrix of international regulations, shipyard practices, and pre-certified materials. All the architects involved in the project had to be schooled by the Genoese guru of naval architecture, Giacomo Mortola, who has more than 70 new or renovated cruise ships under his belt. They learned that a vessel is made of steel plates like Lego pieces, assembled in multiple shipyards at once. Chunks of Scarlet Lady were fabricated in Romania, then towed to Genoa and welded together.

A signed contract triggers an unstoppable process in which every delay or deviation from the norm has a price, ranging from huge to prohibitive. “Timing is extremely important,” says Mortola. “One delay causes others, and then they start to overlap.” Virgin played a risky game by recruiting so many disparate designers — “A lot of prima donnas and big egos,” Mortola says — and then confronting them with the basic truth that all their imaginative flights had to fit in the same steel box. But that cage is not much more unwieldy or restrictive than a land-bound city. Le Corbusier wanted architects to see ships as examples of unadulterated engineering, beautiful in their bareness. Today’s architects might study Scarlet Lady for the opposite lesson: to see how much freedom can flourish within rigid constraints.

Virgin Voyages Debuts Cruise Ship Designed by Tom Dixon and Roman and Williams

By Paul Jebara

Last Friday, British billionaire Richard Branson unveiled his adults-only Virgin Voyages cruise ship in Dover, England, with interiors designed by Tom Dixon and AD100 studio Roman and Williams. The Scarlet Lady heads a quartet of vessels that Branson hopes will herald “the luxe experience of a boutique hotel to the sea,” according to a statement. Built in Genoa, Italy, the cruise liner will be based in Miami and is destined for ports of call around the Caribbean, including Virgin’s private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini. Virgin Voyages will follow up with a Barcelona-based vessel scheduled to cruise the Mediterranean Sea next year.

The introduction of Virgin’s fleet arrives as turbulent fears swirl that the new coronavirus is evolving into a global pandemic. The cruise industry in particular has taken a hit, with Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruises hinting at disastrous effects to profits due to unfavorable headlines. More recently, an attempt to quarantine over 3,700 passengers on a vessel docked in Japan went awry, leading to the virus being spread to noninfected persons onboard.

Still, Branson has his eye on younger holidaymakers, whose interest in going on cruises has spiked in recent years. Virgin’s efforts to appeal to this demographic have manifested in onboard perks like spas and fitness centers (including a running track), a collection of global eateries, and even drag queen performances. Virgin’s Scarlet Lady will host up to 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members.

The sleek bathrooms do not look like ones a passenger would traditionally see on a cruise.

The Scarlet Lady boasts 1,330 cabins and 78 rock-and-roll-themed suites (a nod to Virgin’s heritage in music), the latter designed by Tom Dixon. The RockStar Suites are broken down into eight categories: Massive Suite, Fab Suite, Posh Suite, Gorgeous Suite, Brilliant Suite, Cheeky Corner Suite, Sweet Aft Suite, and the Seriously Suite.

In each, Dixon interprets “life at sea” through a rock-star lens, with nautical hues that reflect the sea and sky; vinyl record players; and, in the two Massive Suites, separate music rooms filled with guitars. Dixon’s signature characteristics, like iridescent mirrors, appear throughout, as well as in Pink Agave, an upscale Mexican cantina he also designed on-ship.

Virgin Voyages will also be an industry leader in sustainability. Its vessels will be among the first to adopt Climeon, a technology that generates electricity from residual heat produced from the ship’s engines, thereby decreasing the need for fuel. The Scarlet Lady will tour the Caribbean on its maiden voyage with passengers in April 2020.

Inside Virgin Voyages, the cruise ships that want to make sea travel cool again

Cruise travel is typically thought to be more appealing to families and older travelers—and for good reason as they are convenient for groups and parties looking for less hassle with little planning required beyond the reservation. Cruise guests can select an itinerary, and have little to worry about after that as far as logistics go.

But Virgin is hoping to change all that with the debut of its latest travel industry venture (at least the most recent available those of us wishing to travel only on Earth). Following in the tradition of Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Hotels, and Virgin Trains, Virgin Voyages wants to make the cruise industry cool again.

“When we went into this business, we did this because the cruise industry was successful,” says Tom McAlpin, president and CEO of Virgin Voyages. “But we wanted to take the best of what cruising is, one that has unique entertainment and is sophisticated, with lots of flexibility in an elegant way, not in a stuffy environment…And we believe by doing that, people will pay you.”

virgin cruise ship design

From the outset, the flashy and colorful designs as well as a heightened focus on fitness and wellness would make it seem that Virgin Voyages aiming to attract a younger audience. But millennials and Generation Z have much less spending power compared to their parents’ and grandparents’ generations amid record inflation that has not been matched in adequate salary gains.

That said, McAlpin says that the ships and itineraries were designed for the “young at heart.” He admits that “we’re not going to be for everyone” and there will be those traditional cruise-goers who want the same meals at the same time at the same restaurant every night. But, he continues, the experience on Virgin Voyages is meant to be livelier with more room for people to change their minds and do what they want, when they want.

“The people that are coming on board are having a fantastic time, and we really do think about this as a younger time,” McAlpin tells Fortune . “What we’re trying to appeal to is a different way to cruise, a different experience…Naturally, I think we’ll get a younger crowd, but this is about appealing to and a different experience for cruisers—cruisers, first and foremost.”

During a media briefing about the launch of Valiant Lady this month, Sir Richard Branson, founder of The Virgin Group , noted that he has been wanting to get into the cruise industry for a long time—to as far back as when he was in his 20s—but that he didn’t have the resources to do it then. “What seemed missing in the market was a really good adults-only cruise line,” he said.

A joint venture between the Virgin Group and Bain Capital, Virgin Voyages is headquartered in Plantation, Fla. The company’s first fleet is referred to as the “Lady Ships,” a play on the term “your ladyship,” in a nod to Virgin’s British heritage.

Virgin Voyages’ brand design ethos can be summed up as “modern romance of sailing,” capturing a fresh, contemporary, and sleek look, with nods of glamour and romance with touches of saltiness and nautical traditions.

“Our brand purpose is to create an epic sea change for all,” McAlpin explains. “We had to create the right culture. And that was the key element that we wanted to get across to everybody: An epic sea change for all—epic and sea change meant that what we’re doing had to be significant, a marked change.”

The Virgin Voyages fleet are also “adult-by-design,” welcoming guests only 18 years and older, with a capacity of approximately 2,700 passengers per ship.

“By not having kids [onboard], it means we can have much more space for beautiful, stunning workout rooms, stunning massage pampering areas, party areas, running tracks, and all that space that you would have to put aside for kids,” Branson explained.

Virgin worked with a creative collective comprised of some of the most experienced interior designers, artists, and architects worldwide, including New York-based Roman and Williams, Concrete Amsterdam, and Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio as well as Softroom, both in London. What’s notable is that while these firms are responsible for some of the most stylish boutique hotels and resorts across the U.S. and Europe, none of them have ever designed for the cruise industry.

“We didn’t build behemoth ships. We built mid-sized ships, and that allows us to create a more intimate experience, and the size of the ship allows us to do things that others can’t,” McAlpin says. “The whole part of the building of this business was orchestrated in a way that makes sense to the type of customer that we’re trying to attract.”

For example, at Valiant Lady ‘s port of call in Barcelona, Spain, you can walk right off the gangway and into Las Ramblas, a neighborhood popular with tourists at the heart of the Catalonian city.

The ship’s design is intended to mimic that of a yacht with a sleek silvery-grey hull with smoked glass, and of course, the Virgin brand’s distinctive touches of red. The ship’s livery was conceptualized by Ben Christie and David Azurdia from the award-winning Magpie Studio in London. RWD from Beaulieu, England, a top draw in super yacht design, fashioned the iconic red Virgin funnel of the vessel.

Constructed in Genoa, Italy, all four of Virgin’s ships will be fairly similar in layout and design upon completion, a conscious decision for both financial and sustainability purposes as McAlpin notes that 20% of the cost of the ship is engineering. There are minor tweaks from ship to ship, like the original artwork. But major components of the ship, such as the restaurants and nightlife (including an event called “Scarlet Night,” the marquee evening party of each trip) will remain the same.

virgin cruise ship design

The company has banned single-use plastics on-board its ships—including straws, bottled water, other beverage bottles, condiment packets, shopping bags, food packaging, stirrers, and to-go coffee and tea cups. Instead, the company emphasizes the use of recyclable and reusable materials across the ship. While onboard, guests are provided with access to complimentary filtered still and sparkling water in their cabins, and there are dozens of refilling stations on each deck.

“We have the newest fleet in the industry. So we’ve been able to benefit from all of the work that we’ve done to make it as fuel efficient as possible,” McAlpin says. “And with every last ounce of energy, we tried to train and not consume, and we have a lot less waste on board.”

Virgin invested in Climeon technology, which converts extra and waste heat into electricity. In the case of cruise ships, engineers can convert the water used to cool the engines, with that heat differential, to create clean energy. “So we can create almost one megawatt of power on board just by taking the heat that’s generated from the engine cooling water,” McAlpin says.

virgin cruise ship design

All in all, Virgin Voyages aims to be net zero in carbon emissions by 2050 as its fleet is being built to the latest energy-efficiency standards with state-of-the-art equipment. All of Virgin’s ships are built with diesel engines and the ability for connecting to shoreside power when docked, and McAlpin says, “the thing that we can do the quickest to have an impact is find different low carbon fuels.”

On finding low carbon fuel for ships, Branson said, “If the industry can’t have sorted that out by 2030, 2035—basically, in my lifetime—I’d be very, very disappointed. I don’t think we need to wait to 2050 for it.” He noted that Virgin has been looking at setting up hydrogen islands in Norway, where ships can just pull in, fill up with hydrogen, and then sail off. “It’s so much easier to do for ships than it is for airplanes,” Branson said. “I would be surprised if ships are not either using alternative fuels, as Tom says, or hydrogen-based fuels within 10 years.”

While stressing there are no positives from the current war in Ukraine, Branson said it is getting more people in Europe talking about every single way to try to speed up deployments of hydrogen and other alternative fuels.

virgin cruise ship design

As cruise operators ramp up business again in the wake of pandemic shutdowns and quarantines, many of them are trying to lure customers back with as many all-inclusive goodies as possible. Virgin Voyages touts that all guests get at least $600 “in value” with included gratuities, Wi-Fi, all food across all of the more than 20 eateries on board, basic drinks (water, coffee, soda, wine, and beer), and group fitness classes—all included in the voyage fare.

“To launch the business, we did a lot of work in talking to our prospective customers about what they were looking for, and wellness resounded very well,” McAlpin says. “They wanted that flexibility, they want to have a good time, they wanted to party, but they also wanted to be able to take care of themselves and have great, healthy food.”

Wellbeing, in all senses of the term, is at the forefront of the onboard experience. You could also throw in the phrase “work hard, play hard” as the ship is fully equipped for daytime rejuvenation and exercise with a 24-hour, fully-quipped fitness center as well as dozens of eclectic group workouts from spin cycling and vinyasa yoga (indoors and outdoors) to upswing bungee masterclasses.

virgin cruise ship design

But guests should budget accordingly for onshore excursions (which can run anywhere from $50 to $500—per person, per excursion—based on what you choose to do) as well as for premium drinks, like speciality coffees (i.e. lattes and cappuccinos), green juices and smoothies, and champagne and cocktails.

The only tip that Virgin says it will ask for are donations to supports ocean conservation partners. All of the fish and seafood served in the onboard dining facilities were promised to have been sustainably-sourced, and sunscreens for sale are all reef-safe.

virgin cruise ship design

The newest ship sailing in the fleet, Valiant Lady has nearly 80 suites, ranging from 352 square feet for more budget-friendly cabins to upwards of 2,147 square feet for those who want to travel like rock stars. Virgin is really betting big on the latter—so much so that they’ve branded its VIP hospitality as “Rockstar Service.”

RockStar Quarters guests (or “sailors,” as Virgin is referring to them as while onboard) see perks as soon as they board thanks to an exclusive express VIP pathway to the ship during embarkation. Guests staying in RockStar Quarters will also get to have porters (also referred to in-house as a “wardrobe team”) to help unpack and repack along with complimentary pressing service and nightly express swimsuit drying service.

virgin cruise ship design

All RockStar Quarters Sailors have access to Richard’s Rooftop, a private members club and a more secluded (and quieter) spot for sunbathing and cocktails. Rockstar guests will also be welcomed with a full bar and cocktail kit in their minibars.

All cabins can sleep at least two, but adjustments can be made during the reservation process to accommodate more depending on the party. Each cabin is custom-created to accommodate the Seabed, the first-ever transformational cabin bed-at-sea, specially engineered and handcrafted by Walter Knoll in Germany. Think of it as the sofa-bed or futon of the ocean as the bed can be reconfigured to a couch easily, reflecting Virgin’s emphasis that this is a social ship rather than a place to quietly get away from it all.

Most standard cabins already have transitional Seabeds installed as well as in-room entertainment with 43-inch 4K flat-screen HDTVs, mini bars, and ample closet space. Cabins feature infrared ( PIR ) presence sensors, which automatically detect when someone has left the cabin so that the system can go into energy saver mode, closing the blinds close and adjusting the air conditioning to an eco-saving temperature.

All suites across the board are equipped mood lighting that automatically adjusts to match the time of day and in-room tablets that allow guests to adjust the room’s lighting. Rooms are outfitted with premium linens and a plush European king bed in every suite as well as upgraded bath amenities.

virgin cruise ship design

Virgin Voyages currently has four ships on the docket, and the original schedule for delivery was to launch a ship annually between 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Virgin Voyages’ first ship, Scarlet Lady , was delivered on Feb. 14, 2020. (And the name “Scarlet Lady” appeared on one of the earliest planes to fly for Virgin Atlantic.)

Obviously, given the pandemic, that plan changed, and instead, the operator is in the process of launching the first three ships over the span of a year. “Our timing was just as bad as it could be,” Branson chuckled.

Valiant Lady just debuted with her “ mermaiden ” voyage this spring. Resilient Lady will follow later this summer, and Brilliant Lady will set sail, as originally planned, in 2023.

Scarlet Lady sails from Miami with itineraries to Mexico and throughout the Caribbean, including stops at Virgin’s private beach club in Bimini. After being christened in England, Valiant Lady is sailing Mediterranean itineraries out of Barcelona. Resilient Lady ‘s port of call will be in Athens, with itineraries around the Greek Islands.

But beyond these four ships, Virgin Voyages is keeping the cards close as to what’s next on the horizon. Branson compared Voyages to Virgin Atlantic, recalling that when the airline was founded in 1984 with only one plane, they didn’t expect to have more than four planes. “We are a small, niche player in a big market in the same way that Virgin Atlantic, when it started, was a small, niche player in a big market.”

“We’re not going to be a fleet complete of 30 ships, but we certainly believe that we can grow beyond four ships. We think 10 is probably the right place,” McAlpin says. “But we’ll do it very systematically, and at the right channels at the right time as we continue to build awareness and build that repeat base of customers.”

The Red Room on Virgin Voyages cruise ships

About The Red Room

At the heart of Virgin Voyages’ commitment to innovation and design, ‘The Red Room’ stands as a testament to the cruise line’s unconventional approach to ship interiors. Departing from traditional cruise ship design norms, Virgin Voyages embarked on a bold mission, enlisting architects and designers who had never worked on sea projects before. This visionary “dream team” of international firms set out to create groundbreaking ship interiors that prioritize exceptional design and functionality.

A Theater Unlike Any Other

Among the spectacular spaces conceived by this pioneering approach is ‘The Red Room,’ the world’s first flexible, multi-form, and multi-purpose theater on a cruise ship. This remarkable venue has the extraordinary ability to morph from a 450-seat proscenium theater to a 550-seat alley configuration, and further transform into a flat floor – complete with a mosh pit – capable of accommodating up to 800 people. Such incredible versatility allows ‘The Red Room’ to cater to a wide range of performances and events, providing an unparalleled entertainment experience at sea.

Innovative Seating and Design

At the core of ‘The Red Room’ lies its ingenious retractable Jezet seating. Carefully designed and detailed to seamlessly adapt to the ship’s movements, even under rough sea conditions, this cutting-edge seating technology ensures a comfortable and immersive experience for every guest. The 12m wide by 21m deep “wedge” of seating is a striking sight, appearing as a pixelated sea of colored seats in captivating red-purple hues. When retracted, the seats transform into a wall of drawers, revealing a glittery poured resin floor adorned with graphics that echo the sense of motion within the space, enhancing reflection and color from the exposed lighting grid above.

Lighting that Sets the Stage

The lighting design for ‘The Red Room’ is as dynamic as the theater’s physical transformation. From the subtle modulation of hidden linear lighting, creating organic layering and three-dimensional relief across the walls, to the ability to completely alter the immersive lighting intensity and color of the theatrical grid, every performance setting is intimately linked to its own distinct lighting setting. The interplay of light and space fosters a captivating sense of immersion, heightening the theatrical experience for the audience.

Entertainment Extravaganza

‘The Red Room’ takes center stage as the venue for some of the most captivating entertainment onboard Virgin Voyages’ ships. From Scarlet Night events and pool parties, including rainy-day moves, to the fabulous ‘Bingo with The Diva’ featuring the resident drag queen, this versatile space hosts a range of ship-specific acrobatic shows like ‘Duel Reality’ and ‘Persephone.’ Guests can also look forward to larger touring productions and performances by renowned entertainers, ensuring a diverse and unforgettable entertainment lineup.

Bar Service and Environment

During events, guests at ‘The Red Room’ can enjoy a limited bar service offering basic wine and beer options, liquors, sodas, and some canned cocktails. It’s worth noting that as you enter the venue, any glassware you may be carrying will be replaced with shatterproof plastic cups, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Cruising the high seas has always been synonymous with luxury, relaxation, and exploration. Yet, amid a sea of cruise lines, one stands out with an audacious approach that redefines the art of sailing. Enter Virgin Voyages, a cruise line that’s turning the industry on its head with an array of innovative features and an unconventional outlook. In this blog post, we delve into the distinctive elements that set Virgin Voyages apart from the crowd and make it a refreshing choice for modern travelers seeking a unique cruise experience.

What Makes Virgin Voyages Different?

Adult-only experience: crafting an atmosphere of unparalleled serenity.

In a world often filled with the joyful chaos of family vacations, Virgin Voyages dares to offer something distinctively different—an adult-only cruise experience known as  “Adult by Design.”  While many cruise lines cater to the needs of families and children, Virgin Voyages has deliberately chosen to focus exclusively on adult travelers aged 18 and above. This choice is not just a random decision; it’s a deliberate strategy to curate an environment that resonates with modern adults seeking a serene and sophisticated getaway.

When you step aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise, you’re stepping into a world where the pace of life changes, and the stresses of daily routine fade away. The absence of children creates a tranquil atmosphere where travelers can unwind, connect, and rediscover themselves in the company of like-minded adults. This approach, a departure from the usual family-centric offerings, has been thoughtfully designed to cater to the unique desires and preferences of adults looking for more than just a vacation—they’re seeking an escape that’s both rejuvenating and stimulating.

Virgin Voyages addresses the yearning for relaxation without compromise by focusing on an adult-only demographic. The cruise line acknowledges that modern adults seek spaces where they can revel in the luxury of peace, immerse themselves in thoughtful conversations, and bask in sophisticated entertainment. It’s a conscious choice to foster an ambiance of tranquility away from the energy and demands of family-oriented travel.

The “ Adult by Design”  concept is not merely about excluding children; it’s about embracing a philosophy that celebrates the joys of adult life. Travelers aboard Virgin Voyages cruises can connect with fellow adults, indulge in world-class dining and entertainment, and engage in activities that resonate with their interests—all within an environment that’s thoughtfully designed to amplify relaxation and enjoyment.

From sunbathing on luxurious deck loungers to savoring a cocktail at a chic lounge, from enjoying gourmet meals in elegant restaurants to participating in sophisticated events, every aspect of the Virgin Voyages offers a respite from the chaos of adult life.

Modern Design and Aesthetic

In stark contrast to the conventional cruise ship designs of yesteryears, Virgin Voyages introduces an exquisite paradigm shift in maritime aesthetics. The vessels exude an avant-garde architectural sensibility that resonates profoundly with the discerning contemporary traveler. The manifestation of sleek lines and innovative spatial arrangements converges seamlessly, encapsulating a rare synergy of form and function.

These ships, intentionally designed with meticulous precision, bestow upon passengers an environment that transcends the confines of customary cruise ship aesthetics, presenting a revitalizing oasis amidst the mundane maritime panorama. It is undeniably a testament to Virgin Voyages’ commitment to redefining the very essence of cruise ship design.

No Buffets and Specialty Dining Included: A Culinary Departure That Elevates the Experience

When it comes to dining aboard a cruise, the image of a sprawling buffet lined with endless trays of food might come to mind. Yet, Virgin Voyages has reimagined this aspect of cruising by bidding adieu to the conventional buffet setup and embracing a culinary approach that’s both innovative and enticing.

The departure from traditional buffets reflects Virgin Voyages’ commitment to providing travelers with high-quality dining experiences that are a cut above the rest. Instead of settling for a monotonous array of mass-produced dishes, the cruise line has curated a selection of specialty restaurants seamlessly integrated into the fare.

So, what sets this approach apart? Imagine indulging in carefully crafted menus designed to tantalize your taste buds, featuring an array of culinary delights that span the globe. From delectable seafood creations to gourmet Italian cuisine, from contemporary Asian fusion to mouthwatering steaks grilled to perfection, Virgin Voyages’ specialty restaurants offer a symphony of flavors that cater to every palate.

Including specialty dining in the fare provides travelers with a diverse and enticing culinary journey and eliminates the need for constant calculations and decision-making. There’s no need to weigh the pros and cons of purchasing dining packages or opting for a la carte meals; instead, you can embark on your cruise knowing that the ship is your oyster.

Inclusive Fare Model

Virgin Voyages eradicates the complexities often associated with cruise pricing. They offer an all-encompassing fare model that elegantly simplifies the intricate pricing structures that have historically plagued the industry. Within this model, a tapestry of essential services such as dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, and even invigorating group fitness classes merge seamlessly into the fare package.

This approach liberates travelers from financial calculations and exhaustive comparisons. The vexations of unexpected surcharges are history, enabling passengers to immerse themselves wholeheartedly in the voyage.

An assortment of drinks packages meticulously curated to cater to the diverse palates of the passengers proffers an array of libations that traverse the spectrum of preferences. Select from an assortment of finely crafted cocktails, wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic concoctions. The distinct tiers of these packages cater to various inclinations, ensuring that each passenger’s libation desires are met with precision. For more information on what’s included , be sure to visit their website.

This approach is emblematic of Virgin Voyages’ unwavering commitment to providing an excellent experience that aligns seamlessly with the voyage’s overarching narrative of luxury and inclusivity.

Sustainable Practices and Environmental Commitment

In an era where environmental consciousness and responsible stewardship are paramount, Virgin Voyages emerges as an exemplar of transformative change within the maritime realm. A steadfast devotion to sustainable practices and unwavering environmental commitments underscores the cruise line’s resolute trajectory toward a greener future.

Central to this ethos is the resolute denouncement of single-use plastics, a symbolic gesture that resonates with the environmentally-conscious traveler. The meticulous elimination of such plastics attests to Virgin Voyages’ recognition of its pivotal role in mitigating the pervasive environmental challenges posed by these materials. This stance reverberates with a profound understanding of the urgent need to embrace alternative solutions that tread more lightly upon the Earth.

Moreover, Virgin Voyages distinguishes itself by integrating advanced wastewater treatment systems. These innovative systems underscore the cruise line’s dedication to preserving the purity of aquatic ecosystems, a resource that is innately intertwined with the very fabric of maritime travel. By exemplifying the implementation of such progressive technologies, Virgin Voyages positions itself as a trailblazer, catalyzing change within an industry that has historically wrestled with ecological considerations.

Virgin Voyages’ sustainable initiatives extend beyond its fleet, acting as a call to action for other industry participants to recalibrate their practices in favor of environmental harmony. This commitment isn’t merely a performative gesture; rather, it is an authentic reflection of the cruise line’s ethos, echoing the sentiments of conscientious travelers who seek not just leisure but also an alignment with values that champion the safeguarding of our precious planet.

Exciting Entertainment

Venturing beyond ordinary amusement, Virgin Voyages crafts an entertainment tapestry that is both captivating and immersive. The voyage, meticulously choreographed to unfold as a symphony of experiences, invites travelers to partake in a journey unlike any other. Within these nautical confines, distinctive venues such as  The Red Room  beckon, offering immersive escapades that transcend traditional boundaries. These immersive experiences, curated with artistic finesse, transport passengers into alternate realms, challenging the conventions of passive entertainment. Meanwhile,  The Manor  sets the stage for exuberant parties that pulsate with energy, effectively weaving an electrifying narrative into the very fabric of the voyage.

Wellness, Relaxation and Fitness

Virgin Voyages offers a plethora of wellness offerings, allowing travelers to indulge in food and beverages while prioritizing their health and fitness . The onboard spa experiences conjure an oasis of serenity. Simultaneously the fitness landscape offers opportunities for passengers to engage in fun physical activities. Here, a multifaceted approach to wellness manifests through an assortment of meticulously curated fitness classes, each designed to cater to diverse preferences and skill levels.

For enthusiasts seeking a balanced blend of strength and flexibility, classes like  “Fusion Flow”  emerge as an ideal choice. In this session, the confluence of yoga and Pilates techniques fosters a harmonious synergy, cultivating physical well-being through controlled movements and mindful breathwork.

“HIIT the Deck”  commands attention for those drawn to a higher-intensity regimen. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) takes center stage in this class with short bursts of dynamic exercises. Such sessions cater to individuals who relish the challenge of pushing their physical boundaries while simultaneously reaping the rewards of enhanced endurance.

An all-encompassing approach finds fruition in  “Training Camp,” a  class that integrates diverse exercise modalities to foster comprehensive strength and conditioning.

Crew Welfare and Compensation

Virgin Voyages cares not only for its travelers but also for its crew members. With a unique approach to compensation and benefits, including a groundbreaking  “Scarlet Squad”  program that supports women in leadership roles, the cruise line goes beyond the norm to ensure crew welfare and happiness.

Lasting Impressions

Ultimately, in a world where cruise experiences can sometimes feel interchangeable, Virgin Voyages stands out as a breath of fresh air. With its adult-only focus, modern design, inclusive fare model, sustainable practices, and unique entertainment options, it offers a new perspective on what cruising can be.

The distinctiveness of Virgin Voyages extends beyond its ships and amenities; it’s a philosophy that embraces innovation, individuality, and a new way of approaching the cruise experience. By combining modern design, sustainable practices, all-inclusive convenience, and a commitment to guest satisfaction, the cruise line has managed to carve out a refreshing and forward-thinking niche.

As travelers embark on a journey with Virgin Voyages, they’re not just setting sail on the open waters. They’re immersing themselves in a cruise experience that’s unapologetically unique and authentically reflective of the modern traveler’s desires. 14 Cool Things to Know About the New Virgin Voyages Cruise Line

Most of the time, cruisers get excited about the newest ship coming to a cruise line. Carnival Horizon, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, and Norwegian Bliss have all made tons of headlines due to their size, grandeur, and newest features.

Imagine, then, if instead of just a new ship there was an entirely new cruise line. And that cruise line what making major changes to what’s considered “normal” in the cruise industry.

That’s exactly what we’re seeing with Virgin Voyages . The cruise line is part of Richard Branson’s “Virgin” umbrella of companies, which includes everything from airlines to cell service. One thing about the reputation of Virgin is that the company is seen as always doing things a bit different — and a bit better — than its competitors.

From the sounds of it, the Virgin Voyages cruise line will be no different. While the first ship won’t be up and running for more than a year, there’s been a steady trickle of news and unveilings of noteworthy features. In fact, much of what’s been revealed so far make it clear that Virgin will not be just another cruise line.

Here’s what we know so far…

Scarlet Lady stern

Virgin Voyages Is For Adults Only

Perhaps the first sign that Virgin won’t just be another cruise line is that it is adults only. For years cruise lines have pushed to be family friendly, designed to appeal to everyone. Kid’s clubs and activities for children are commonplace on most cruises. However, Virgin has announced that you must be 18 years or older to sail on its ships. That means even if you have teenagers who know how to behave themselves, they still won’t be allowed on board. Leave the kids at home.

The First Ship Will Sail From Miami

If you want to ride on the new cruise line, you need to start looking for tickets to Miami. Virgin has announced that the ship will sail from PortMiami. This shouldn’t be a surprise. The company has offices in nearby Plantation, Florida, so sailing from South Florida makes sense. Meanwhile, the Miami cruise port is the busiest in the world and offer the resources and facilities to handle a new cruise line.

The Ships Will Look Like No Other

Scarlet Lady bow

Even the look of the cruise ship is getting an overhaul. The renderings of Virgin’s first ship show a futuristic design, with cabins that go all the way to the point of the bow. The bow itself is creates more of a vertical line from the water instead of the classic forward angle On the stern, the superstructure is cut-in from the width of the hull, similar to the MSC Seaside. It all combines to create a ship that’s unmistakable and sure to turn heads.

The First Ship Is Named Scarlet Lady

So much is made of a cruise ship’s name. It can set the tone for what passengers expect, based simply on the name. In this case, Virgin Voyages has named its first ship Scarlet Lady. In our opinion the name suggests style and grace, which is likely what the cruise line was going for. In addition, the name is an homage to the name of one of the early planes to fly for Virgin’s airline.

There Will Be No Buffets

Buffets and cruise ships go together like peanut butter and jelly. But when is the last time you really loved eating at the buffet? Truth is that many passengers eat there because that’s what’s available. Virgin Voyages will take the buffet out all together.

All Restaurants Are Included

Restaurant on Virgin Voyages

Over the years, it’s been a trend to have more restaurants on the ship… but to charge extra for them. So if you want to eat somewhere other than the buffet or the main dining room, then you usually have to pay up. That’s not the case on the Scarlet Lady. The cruise line has announced that not only will there be 20+ places to eat on board, but they also will be included in your cruise fare. That’s a welcome relief from the trend toward charging more for specialty restaurants.

There’s a Bar in Every Restaurant

One thing that Virgin Voyages isn’t getting rid of is the bar. In fact, every restaurant on the ship will have a bar so there’s no need to run elsewhere for a drink while having a meal or just hanging out. No word yet on if drink packages will be available.

Food Is Made to Order

Remember how we told you there were no buffets on the cruise ship? Well if the idea of food sitting out for extended periods doesn’t sound good to you, then you’ll love to hear that Virgin Voyages plans to have all of its food made to order. We’re not exactly sure how the cruise line will be able to feed thousands of people during the meal time rush without having some items pre-made, but we sure like the sound of having everything freshly made when ordered.

Single-Use Plastics Are Gone

According to the cruise line, there will be a massive reduction in disposable plastics — including elimination of single-use plastics — across the fleet. Things like plastic straws, and disposable water bottles will no longer be offered. Meanwhile, the ship also aims to reduce the total amount of disposable plastic consumed (compared to the average liner) by 50% or more.

There’s a Tattoo Parlor On the Ship

Virgin Voyages tattoo parlor

It certainly isn’t for everyone, but for those that want to get some ink done, there’s a one-of-a-kind tattoo parlor at sea. We know of no other cruise line doing something like this. “Squid Ink” will be able to handle anything you need in the tattoo department, whether it’s a butterfly on your ankle or a clipper ship across your chest.

Havana Will Be On the Ports of Call

A few years ago Havana began opening up for cruise ships and it’s been an exciting new addition to cruise lineups. Virgin has announced that Havana will be its first destination. As one of the most “unspoiled” cruise ports in the Caribbean, we certainly think Havana makes sense as a ground-breaking destination. There’s no word yet on what other ports the ships will visit.

There Are Four Ships Planned

The first ship from Virgin Voyages is the Scarlet Lady, but that’s not all the cruise line has planned. Already a second ship is under construction. Right now this ship is yet to be named. In addition, there are two more ships ordered, which will mean a fleet of four Virgin ships by the time they are completed. In other words, Virgin Voyages is not simply looking to have a ship and call itself a cruise line. It will be sailing with an entire fleet.

Gyms Are Completely Reimagined

Gym on Scarlet Lady

Head to the gym on a cruise ship today and you’ll find some treadmills and weight machines, but that’s about it. In fact, most of the time it’s empty. Virgin seems to be focusing heavily on health and wellness. The ship will include a “Training Camp” room, boxing classes, space for yoga and meditation, and even a cold-pressed juice bar. In addition, the cruise line seems to be focusing not just on working out, but working out and socializing, which it says is inspired by athletic social clubs of the past.

Scarlet Lady Sets Sail in 2020

While the exact date is yet unknown, if you’re excited about sailing on Virgin Voyages, then you’ll have to wait until 2020. That’s when the first ship in the fleet is scheduled to set sail. After that, the schedule is for each of the remaining ships to come online one a year through 2023. There is no word yet on when reservation will open for passengers to book their spot to set sail.

Introducing Virgin Voyages’ fourth ship, Brilliant Lady

A photo of a Virgin Voyages ship with the name "Brilliant Lady"

With three ships in the water by the end of the summer, Virgin Voyages is welcoming its fourth lady ship to the family.

Like her three sisters Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady - Virgin Voyages has chosen a name that represents the values and beliefs it holds. As the team continually aims to create an exciting and radiant experience for its Sailors, it feels right that the fourth ship reflects that. So it’s our absolute honour to introduce Brilliant Lady to the fleet.

In a world where women are still fighting for their place at the table, intelligence is something women are often taught not to claim for themselves. Women are taught to be pretty, patient, and strong — and those are often traits we’re allowed to own. But being smart, being absolutely brilliant, is a characteristic that women are so rarely allowed to celebrate without fear of being called arrogant. Without fear of being “too much.” Without fear, period.

While on the other hand, traditionally, men are encouraged to claim their intelligence; it's seen, rightfully, as confident and knowing their worth. Brilliant Lady represents the smart, thoughtful, boundary-pushing minds of women around the world — unafraid of owning their intelligence, aware of their importance, and confidently in touch with their own sense of self worth.

Virgin Voyages has something to float everyone's boat. Get a taste of luxury at the 20 onboard eateries, covering everything from Michelin-style dining to late night snacking. Or if you’re looking for some rest and relaxation time, book into the onboard spa and enjoy some time for you. Looking to let your hair down? There’s no party like a Virgin Voyages party so make sure you pack your dancing shoes and head to the onboard nightclub.

Virgin Voyages Adult By Design concept fosters a sense of adventure

By cristine struble | oct 6, 2021.

With its bold presence at the Port of Miami, the Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady is more than just another cruise ship sitting at the dock. Beyond the signature red hue that announces its connection to the Virgin brand, the cruise ship looks to set a tone before, during and after that voyage. The experience might be “Adult By Design,” but the childlike sense of wonder is celebrated at every turn.

Over the years, the cruise industry has seen an uptick in popularity. From the mega-ships that seem like floating cities to Disney cruises to carefully curated adventures on a smaller scale, the idea of unpacking once yet traveling from locale to locale captivates many adventures. While the concept is intriguing, finding the right fit for the traveler might not be quite as simplistic.

With Virgin Voyages, these adventures capture the sentiment and the concept that has made the Virgin brand stand out in a crowd. Anyone who has walked into a Virgin hotel appreciates that a stay is not the typical overnight experience. It is about leaving behind the mundane and appreciating the spirit of the moment.

How does Virgin Voyages Adult By Design set a new course for travel?

During a recent media preview in Miami, guests were able to explore the Scarlet Lady and experience some of the restaurants, bars and entertainment of the new cruise ship. From the initial greeting to the last goodbye, one thing was clear. Every sailor was encouraged to embrace the moment, push away the common place and be open to the possibilities that await.

Even though cruising can satisfy that sense of adventure, the Virgin Voyages concept is more than just a journey. It appeals to total lifestyle. For people who work hard to play hard, this escape appeals to that mindset. From shaking for champagne to resetting the mind and body at a yoga class, the whole person experience is addressed at every turn.

Overall, the experience seems to appeal to the well-balanced lifestyle. From the design of the ship to addressing sustainability, including the banning of single use plastics, the approach seems to capture the “Modern Romance of Sailing.” Whether it is the specially designed Seabed to the glam station to group of sailors helping to guide the experience, that first visit will definitely not be the last.

What is unique to the Virgin Voyages experience?

While travelers have many reasons to choose one cruise ship over another, Virgin Voyages might be the exceptional option for the foodie. With all dining options included in the vacation, guests will appreciate that the menus feature elevating dining, food trends and unique experiences that will satisfy every craving.

Whether it is a nod to the Michelin Star tasting menu dining experience to an interactive Korean meal to a classic steakhouse, it might be hard to sample all the deliciousness. Even the beverage program is unique. With the ability to shake a smartphone and have champagne delivered anywhere on board, this experience is about letting go yet never wanting for anything.

From entertainment to pampering, guests can make their time aboard the Virgin Voyages their own. Guests might step aboard just a traveler, but they will leave appreciating what it means to be a sailor on journey to enjoyment.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady is one of four ships that will be part of the fleet. The Scarlet Lady departs from the Port of Miami for various duration cruises throughout the Caribbean. For more information on the cruise line and bookings, please visit the company’s website .

For those who are ready to sail into something spectacular, Virgin Voyages is waiting. Are you ready for the next great adventure at sea?

In 2020, Virgin Cruises officially started operations (from Miami Florida USA ) with the 2800-passenger Scarlet Lady . Three more sisterships were inaugurated in the following years - Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2022) and Brilliant Lady (2024).

The announcement (initially for 3 ships) was made on June 23, 2015, in Miami, during a press conference (media event "making waves") for Virgin Group's new cruise travel brand. For the event, Richard Branson arrived on a helicopter, landing near Miami's Museum Park. He announced that the total building cost for the 3 ships is USD 2,13 billion (US$710M per unit). The announcement for the 4th ship was made on October 31, 2018, with order value ~EUR 700 million.

The company's current President and CEO is Nirmal Saverimuttu (1979-born in Zambian, raised in Australia), who in September 2023 succeeded Thomas Michael McAlpin (1959-born American). McAlpin joined DCL-Disney Cruise Line in 1995 (as VP of Finance, Business Development & Shore Travel Operations) overseeing the construction of the first Disney ships ( Magic /1998 and Wonder /1999) and the development of Walt Disney's private Bahamian island Castaway Cay . In 2004, he became DCL's President. Prior to heading Virgin Cruises, McAlpin served as CEO of The World Residences at Sea (in the period 2009-2014). Following his retirement from CEO and President, Tom McAlpin continued to serve Virgin Voyages as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Earlier in 2016, Virgin settled US$300M lawsuits filed by Colin Veitch (former NCL-Norwegian CEO), who claimed Virgin had stolen his ideas and moved on with the cruise line concept without him.

Tom McAlpin commented that the company is not to be considered a big player in the cruising industry, but rather "a small boutique line that will offer different experiences". McAlpin and Branson hinted that those experiences might take some cues from other successful Virgin ventures, like Virgin Hotels. The hotel chain is popular for offering free WiFi, minibar drinks at street prices, privacy doors allowing guests to go on about their business while room service brings requests, pet-friendly amenities with no weight or size restrictions.

In October 2016, "Virgin Cruises" was rebranded as "Virgin Voyages". At the time it was first announced, the company's founder Branson said his goal was to create a brand cruising experience that is more likely to appeal to millennials and other people who don't normally take cruise ship vacations.

In regard to onboard gratuities, the company has "No Tipping" policy, which means all gratuities are included in the base cruise fares. Also included in basic fares are beverages, all eateries, group fitness classes. The company also doesn't charge penalties or change fees. Customers are able to hold staterooms for 24 hours with no money down once they've placed a 20% non-refundable deposit. They also have a 7-day grace period allowing them to change bookings for any reason. Cruise departure date and names on bookings can be changed without fees or penalties. Shortly before opening the bookings on Scarlet Lady (Feb 14, 2019), Virgin announced all-inclusive deal policy by which cruises are sold "by cabin price". Fares are also inclusive of dining (shipwide / 20 options, some 24-hour), unlimited WiFi, all fitness classes. Cabin pricing only varies by the number of occupants. For 5-day itineraries, fares start from ~USD 250 pp per day (excluding taxes-fees).

Virgin Cruises' "non-commissionable policy" allows travel agents to earn across customer's entire transaction, including on add-ons (hotels, flights, travel insurance, spa treatments, tours/excursions, premium packages, onboard credits, taxes, fees). Travel agents receive 16% base commission on the transaction (increased from 10% by the expanded "Brilliant To Do Business With" program). "Red Hot Bonus" program additionally offers annually paid revenue up to 6% (in case certain production thresholds are met) in addition to 10% commission on everything sold prior the cruise (excepting taxes and fees).

Company changes 2019 (pre-inauguration)

The sea lavender-based perfume was created by Air Aroma - a company specializing in scent marketing and fragrance systems (diffusers, Aropromo sale scenting devices). Virgin's Ship No. 1 is infused throughout Scarlet Lady. The perfume can be also purchased (only online - via ItSmellsLikeShip.com) for USD 50 per bottle. All net proceeds from these sales go to Ocean Unite (non-profit foundation of 30+ political leaders and business tycoons).

On December 19, 2019, was announced the "Sailor Loot" (OBC/onboard credit) program. These promotions offer OBC (per cabin) for shipboard spending during the current voyage. The OBC is based on the stateroom category and ranges from US$ 100 (interior and oceanview) to US$200 (balcony) and up to US$ 400 (suites).

Now each Virgin cruise ship offers 50+ activities and events. The onboard programming features live performances (by the company's Hapenings Cast) and is managed by Richard Kilman (Virgin's VP of Entertainment).

Company changes 2024

In February Steven Worling (Senior Director of Infrastructure & Security) announced that Virgin Voyages would roll out fleetwide an improved connectivity (Internet/Wi-Fi package) with SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink PRO (satellite service), with onboard connectivity 1,5 Gbps (max per ship). The new gaming venue hosts beginner training sessions, as well as cash games and WPT Prize Package poker tournaments with buy-ins between US$80-320. The US$320 buy-in WPT Prize tournament is held once per cruise. The prize (US$5000) can be used on any future voyage or WPT tournament.

In September, Nirmal Saverimuttu succeeded Michael McAlpin as the company's President and CEO. Along with the new appointment was announced a capital raise of USD 550 million (~EUR 512M/~GBP 440M) with funds managed by Ares Management's Private Equity Group. As of 2023, Ares had ~US$49,2 billion of AUM/assets under management.

In March 2022 was announced a partnership with Jennifer Lynn Lopez (1969-born American actress and singer) via her brand company "JLo Beauty and Lifestyle LLC". Jennifer Lopez joined Virgin Voyages as an investor and chief of entertainment/advisor/lifestyle officer. As part of the partnership, fleetwide was introduced "JLo Beauty" (onboard shop) selling the superstar's products at sea for the first time. In June 2023, she was appointed as Virgin's Chief Celebrations Officer.

In September 2022 debuted Virgin's loyalty program "The Sailing Club" by which repeat customers are provided with two main complimentary perks - "Deep Blue Extras" (premium WiFi, invitations to onboard cocktail parties, laundry services) and "Red Hot Booking Bonus Months" (discounted booking with additional OBC/onboard credit).

In September 2022 Virgin partnered with RSB/Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (an independent global membership organization). Virgin also signed long-term agreements with three providers of waste-based sustainable fuels (Argent Energy, GoodFuels, Twelve) to supply the fleet's bunker fuels.

Company changes 2021

In mid-November 2021 was announced an investment in Virgin Voyages by Patricof & Co (1969-founded by Alan Patricof, specializing in venture capital investments). The company is part of Apax Partners LLP (London UK-based equity firm) that also includes Multinational Management Group (1972-founded) and Saunders Karp & Megrue (1988-founded).

Company changes 2020

On April 1, 2020, the company launched its "Jet Transfers Direct to Ship" service. The exclusive "fly-cruise" deal is for RockStar Suite passengers only, allowing them to arrive and depart the boat via chartered or private aircraft. The planes land at The Runway - a top-deck open space (Deck 17 aft) surrounded by a raised Jogging Track.

Virgin cruise ships

On June 23, 2015, Virgin announced it had signed a Letter of Intent with Fincantieri (shipbuilder based in Trieste Italy ) for the construction of 3 ships scheduled for deliveries in 2020-2021-2022 (entering service in 15-month increments).

The shipbuilding order was officially finalized on December 21, 2016. The boats are of the so-called "Lady-class", mid-sized (volume 110000 GT-tons), max passenger capacity 2860 (1410 cabins/90% with balconies), 1150 crew-staff.

The shipbuilding contract was valued at ~EUR 2 billion. The first unit's construction (Scarlet Lady) started with the steel-cutting on March 22, 2017. For the vessel design and construction, Virgin contracted the marine architecture and naval design companies "Roman and Williams" (NYC), Concrete Amsterdam, Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio (London UK), Gem Srl (Italy), Softroom (London UK), WORKac (NYC), Knibb Design, HL Studio (UK), HKS Architects (Dallas USA), PearsonLloyd (London UK).

The first ship's ( Scarlet Lady ) keel-laying ceremony was held on October 31, 2017, and attended by Sir Richard Branson, Tom McAlpin, and Boy George (UK singer, songwriter, fashion designer) who performed as superstar DJ. During the ceremony were also revealed the ship design and hull art of the future Virgin "Lady Ships".

The next image shows the ship's stern (aft) and the signature funnel shape - designed to be a major part of its exterior design. The aft of the superstructure also shows the Promenade Deck and 7 decks of cabin balconies towering above.

Virgin Voyages cruise ship

Each boat has 86% balcony staterooms and 93% oceanview (outside) cabins. These newbuilds greatly differ from other passenger liners (as design) and target younger and more adventurous travellers (called "sailors").

Virgin's ships are adults-only (passengers under 18 yo/teenagers and kids are not allowed) and Bahamas- flagged (registered in Nassau ).

Dining on Virgin Voyages ships is ticket price-inclusive - no extra charges are applied to any of the 20-plus onboard dining options. The cruise company doesn't believe in "paying more for great food", so it ditched traditional surcharges levied in specialty restaurants. All eateries offer "exceptional made-to-order eats" - complimentary.

As part of the company's sustainable travel policy, Virgin banned single-use plastics and there is no buffet food on the ships. All shipboard food is made-to-order - to reduce waste and lower energy consumption and emissions. Savings are reinvested into fresh (locally sourced) top-quality products, exotic ingredients, highly trained staff, and clean technologies. In April 2019 was signed a partnership with Emerald Brand to supply the fleet with "Tree-Free" (disposable) paper products, including facial-bath tissues, paper towels, napkins, hot cups. Those are made from 60-100% Tree-Free materials via technologies that use by-products of agricultural crops usually wasted or burned.

The company doesn't follow any traditional cruise dining concepts. Virgin ships don't have a main dining room, buffet restaurant, dress code (formal wear policy), assigned dining times or seating. All these concepts were replaced with intimate (boutique hotel-type) eateries offering 20+ dining options - all of which are included in cruise fares.

At night, the wellness complex transforms into a dancing lounge with live DJ music.
  • Razzle Dazzle is the vegan-vegetarian restaurant. Part of Razzle Dazzle is Red Bar - juice bar for fresh-squeezed juices and tonics, as well as crafted cocktails from a menu that varies every night. In two days per voyage, at Razzle Dazzle are hosted Drag Brunches featuring live entertainment by "sassy drag queens".

Via the Sailor App (when your phone is shaken), a secret Champagne button allows you to order Moet-Chandon Champagne (Brut Imperial, 750 ml bottle) delivered in an ice bucket and with two glasses. The service is called "Shake for Champagne" and provided anywhere on the ship. The premium wine can be also enjoyed at The Sip - the ship's wine lounge (Virgin's champagne house).- where also is available traditional British Afternoon Tea service.

Virgin cruise passengers are offered complimentary water (filtered and sparkling) at all onboard bars and restaurants. Throughout the ship, there are also complimentary water stations.

Virgin ships' hull art designs are Mermaid-themed (by different artists) and Inspired by traditional figureheads mounted on the bows of historic wooden ships. The designs symbolize the vessels' feminine spirit.

Ship technology

One of the cruise ships' features is the advanced clean energy system provided by the Swedish company Climeon Ocean. The new technology allows reducing CO2 emissions by converting the generated by diesel engines' heat into electricity for shipboard use. Each of the newbuilds has 6 such Climeon units, saving ~5400 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The ship's waste processing system is provided by Scanship.

On April 30, 2018, Virgin Voyages signed with Wartsila (marine technologies Finnish corporation / former shipbuilder) a 10-year "Optimised Maintenance Agreement" giving the corporation extensive and exclusive responsibility of the fleet's technical maintenance. Wartsila's "Dynamic Maintenance Planning" system allows maintenance works to be scheduled based on remotely (real-time) monitored and analyzed vessel performance data. This allows extending service intervals (when onboard equipment doesn't require maintenance).

The Virgin-Wartsila deal includes Remote Operational Support Services, Specific Fuel Oil Consumption, spare parts, engines technical advisory services, comprehensive technical support, personnel training. Wartsila-made ship equipment includes 46F diesel engines, Hybrid Scrubber System, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction/exhaust gas cleaning) and NACOS Platinum series (navigation and automation control systems).

  • Each Virgin ship is powered by two 8-cylinder plus two 12-cylinder "Wartsila 46F" marine diesel engines. Wartsila's Hybrid Scrubber System operates in both open and closed-loop and uses seawater to remove SOx from the ship's exhaust. It also significantly reduces NOx emissions.
  • Propulsion is based on ABB Azipod XO system (electric drive motors with off-hull submerged azimuth thrusters / 360--degree rotating propellers). These units provide best maneuverability (allowing in-port navigation without tug assistance) and minimal vibrations/noise. By placing the propulsion units outside the hull, the Azipod system frees up space for more lower-deck staterooms.
  • ABB Ability technology is based on a network using real-time data transferred to remote centres monitoring and analyzing the propulsion system data and also offering remote technical support.
  • In July 2017, was announced that Wartsila (marine technologies Finnish corporation / former shipbuilder) is the provider of vessels' power plants. Among Wartsila's core products are large diesel engines for cruise ships and ferries .

In April 2019 was contracted V-Ships Leisure USA (ship management company) which is part of V-Group Ltd (vessel management and support services provider, industry's first with a dedicated cruise ship division). V-Ships Leisure is responsible for Virgin ships' technical support/management and crew sourcing.

Virgin cruise line's staff and crew uniforms were designed by Gareth Pugh and manufactured by Cintas Corporation (via the "Design Collective by Cintas" division).

  • Cintas Corporation (1929-founded, based in Cincinnati, Ohio USA) specializes in businesses products (both for rental and direct purchase) and services, including uniforms, mats, water coolers, cleaning/restroom supplies (chemicals, mops, microfiber towels, disinfectant sprays, hand sanitizers), first aid/safety products, fire extinguishers (also testing and repairs), employee courses (safety, training, compliance). In 2020, Cintas had 40,000+ employees and total revenue USD 7,09 billion (~EUR 6,12B / ~GBP 5,21B).
  • Virgin Voyages Crew apparel collection is based on sustainable fabrics and garments specifically designed according to job functions, body types and climates. Unlike the traditional cruise ship uniforms, Virgin's lack the officers' epaulettes (ornamental shoulder pieces that designate his/her rank), as well as ties and waistcoats.

The project was led by Gareth Pugh (British fashion designer) and supervised by Dee Cooper (Virgin Voyages' SVP Design and Customer Experience).

The lightweight device (RFID wristband) is mailed to all passengers and is complimentary (keepsake). The Band is activated upon boarding the ship and used for onboard purchases and payments (beverages, Casino gaming), booking tours, cabin access (room key), room service ordering (points guest's current location), VIP pass (for Richard's Rooftop).

Virgin's private island resort "Bimini Beach Club" (Bahamas)

The liner Scarlet Lady is the first cruise ship to stop at "Bimini Beach Club" (Virgin Group's private island resort in Bimini Bahamas ). The exclusive destination allows Virgin's Sailors to enjoy world-class entertainment from a rotating cast of DJs led by Mark Ronson. Virgin's Bimini Beach Club offers premium food with locally sourced ingredients and traditional Bahamian favourites like banana leaf-wrapped queen snapper, conch and mango salad, Bahamian rum cake. Virgin's private resort is located on North Bimini Island and at a short bus transfer from the docking pier. It was built via partnership with Resorts World Bimini. This is a 750-acres (3 km2 / 1,2 mi2) beachfront resort-casino-marina-hotel complex operated by Genting Group (Malaysia-based multinational corporation). North Bimini is approx 68 km (42 mi) east of Miami .

Resort's building cost is USD 220 million. Virgin's Bimini Beach Club overlooks the sea and features a large lagoon-style swimming pool. The "resort experience" also features morning open-air exercises (yoga and meditation), afternoon DJ poolside parties, night beach bonfires and live musical performances.

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Virgin Voyages postponed the cruise brand's in March 2020 inauguration (Scarlet Lady ship's Showcase Tour / media event in PortMiami) for July 15th (4-day "Richard's Birthday Bash"), with the maiden voyage departing on August 7th from Miami. The ship's originally planned inauguration was for March 29th, 2020 (3-day "Sneak-A-Peek Cruise").

All the scheduled between March 26-August 7th (a total of 29) departures were canceled. In mid-May 2020 were canceled 15 additional departures (through October 15). The 4-night "Richard Branson's 70th Birthday Cruise" (originally planned for July 15, 2020) was rescheduled for July 14, 2021. The brand's inauguration was rescheduled for 2021 (January 3, then for May 9). In mid-December were cancelled more itineraries.

The brand's inauguration was rescheduled for August 6, 2021 (Scarlet Lady's Maiden Voyage from Portsmouth England). Valiant Lady's inaugural cruise program was also postponed (Maiden Voyage rescheduled from Nov 14, 2021, to March 18, 2022) and revised.

Smooth Sailing also allows cancellations up to 48 hours (prior departure) with receiving a full (100%) refund in FCC.

Itinerary of Virgin Voyages

In 2016, Virgin cruise line's itinerary program was not detailed yet, but Branson mentioned one destination that was on the list - the Caribbean. When asked about Cuba being a potential port destination, he immediately replied "Yes!". This also meant roundtrip departures from a Florida port.

In 2017 was announced that the first Virgin cruise ship ( Scarlet Lady ) will be initially homeported in PortMiami for 7-day Caribbean itineraries departing on Sundays. During the inaugural season 2020-2021, the liner was scheduled to visit Cuba. The company's decision was influenced by conducted customer and travel agency research in the UK and North America. All Virgin cruises to Cuba had to offer an overnight stay in Havana , allowing passengers ("sailors") to explore the country's capital and its unique nightlife.

  • 5-day "Mayan Sol" itinerary visits Havana (overnight) and Costa Maya (Mexico) . In Mexico, shore excursions include scuba diving (coral reefs) and Mayan ruins.
  • 5-day "Dominican Daze" itinerary visits Havana (overnight) and Puerto Plata (Dominicana) where shore tours include trekking, surfing, shopping.

The second Virgin ship ( Valiant Lady ) is homeported in Miami during 2022-2023 winter season.

On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson and Tom McAlpin announced in Miami the company's plans to build a new (Virgin-exclusive) cruise terminal in PortMiami. "Virgin Voyages Terminal" is sized 100,000 ft2 (9300 m2) and is on the seaport's northwest side.

Virgin Voyages passengers benefit from an impressive variety of cruises to choose from in the inaugural 2020 season of the line's new build . The 4- or 5-night "Havana After Dark" itineraries allow Sailors to explore the Cuban culture and include an overnight stay in Cuba's capital city.

  • The 5-night "Mayan Sol" itinerary visits Costa Maya Mexico . The Mayan ruins are just a short distance from the port and colorful coral reefs lie just off-shore. Virgin Voyages partnered with ITM Group for the land tours.
  • The 5-night "Dominican Daze" itinerary visits Puerto Plata . On the island are offered trekking, surfing and handicraft shopping tours.

All Virgin Caribbean cruises depart from homeport Miami Florida . Virgin ships are also seasonally deployed in Europe (via Transatlantic crossings), with planned visits to several major Mediterranean and UK ports (including Dover and Liverpool ).

However, following the 2019s (June 5 issued) US Government restrictions on USA to Cuba travel, Virgin Voyages revised all scheduled itineraries to exclude Havana . The new itineraries offer late-night call port departures (including a midnight departure) on all revised Caribbean voyages.

  • 5-night "Riviera Maya" itinerary visits Playa Del Carmen (across Cozumel Island), with opportunities to explore archaeological and ecological sites or touring the neighbouring Tulum (walled Mayan city).
  • 4-night "Fire and Sunset Soirees" (short-breaks) visit Key West Florida (sunset departure) and Bimini Bahamas (with a late-night beach bonfire party and midnight departure). The line's sailors can experience the cultural paradise of Key West, paired with an exclusive late-night beach bonfire soiree. The artistic fire installation draws inspiration from the fireball sculptures on Branson's Necker Island.
  • 7-night itineraries (for 2020 Xmas holidays) include the themed cruises "Holidaze and Nights" and "New Year's Ahoy" visiting Puerto Plata Dominicana with Bimini Bahamas and San Juan Puerto Rico.

All Virgin Caribbean cruises visit Bimini Bahamas as a private island destination.

In April 2022 was announced that in winter 2023-2024, Resilient Lady will be deployed in Australia and New Zealand (Virgin brand's debut in the region). With homeporting in Melbourne , the roundtrip itineraries ranged between 2-14 nights. Some voyages also visited ports in Tasmania (Hobart, Burnie).

Valiant Lady's inaugural cruises 2022

Virgin's second ship ( Valiant Lady ) starts its inaugural season (2022/Maiden Voyage departs March 18th) with roundtrips leaving from Portsmouth England .

  • 3-night "Long Weekender" to Zeebrugge Belgium
  • 11-night "Coast the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal"/UK to Iberia
  • 12-night "Late Nights in Portugal and Spain"/UK to Iberia

Follows a Western Mediterranean deployment (May thru October 2022) based on homeporting in Barcelona and 7-day roundtrips (Sunday departures) visiting large port cities in France, Italy and Spain. Valiant Lady's Caribbean program is based on homeporting in Miami Florida USA and includes 2-week Transatlantic crossings on repositioning between Europe and USA (RepositionCruises.com).

  • 8-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries (Miami roundtrips) are priced from USD 188 per night and visit Puerto Plata (Dominicana) , San Juan (Puerto Rico) , St Croix Island (USVI) and Bimini (Bahamas) .
  • 6-night Western Caribbean itineraries (roundtrips from Miami) visit Roatan Island (Honduras) , Costa Maya (Mexico) and Bimini. Fares start at USD 192 per night.
  • Special ( Christmas and New Year's ) itineraries and Atlantic Ocean crossings/relocation voyages are priced from USD 102 per night.

In the Caribbean, Virgin boats are homeported in Miami and all itineraries visit Bimini Bahamas as a private island destination.

Resilient Lady's inaugural cruises 2022

Virgin's third ship ( Resilient Lady ) starts its inaugural season (2022/Maiden Voyage departs August 14th) with roundtrips leaving from Piraeus-Athens (Greece) .

  • The 7-day roundtrip "Greek Island Glow" itinerary visits the Greek islands Santorini, Rhodes, Crete (Chania) and Mykonos.
  • The 7-day roundtrip "Adriatic Sea and Greek Gems" itinerary visits Croatia (Dubrovnik), Montenegro (Kotor), and Greece (Kerkyra/Corfu Island, and Argostoli/Kefalonia Island).
  • The "Greek Isles" program (scheduled between August 14 - October 23) ends with the 11-day Transatlantic crossing from Europe to the Caribbean (from Lisbon to San Juan/departure November 1st).

The inaugural Caribbean season 2022-2023 (Nov 12 - April 15) is based on homeporting in San Juan Puerto Rico and 7-day roundtrips.

  • The "Southeastern Caribbean Isles" itinerary visits Tortola Island BVI (Road Town), Guadeloupe (Pointe-a-Pitre), Barbados (Bridgetown), St Lucia (Castries) and Antigua (St Johns).
  • The "Sunsets In The Lesser Antilles" itinerary visits St Kitts (Basseterre), Martinique (Fort-de-France), Curacao (Willemstad) and Aruba (Oranjestad).

In 2023-2024 (December-March), Resilient Lady was deployed in Australia. The program included three relocation itineraries from Europe to Asia and Australia (RepositionCruises.com) - 14-day from Athens to Dubai (Oct 22), 15-day from Dubai to Singapore (Nov 5) and 15-day from Singapore to Sydney NSW (Nov 20).

Itineraries 2024-2025

Virgin's 2024-2025 (April) schedule lists 19 maiden/new ports and 27 different itineraries in the UK, Australia/NZ, and the Caribbean. Among these are the "Seachange Series" (ship relocation voyages) providing extended sea travel opportunities.

Resilient Lady is homeported in Piraeus-Athens Greece (May through July 2024) for Aegean and Adriatic itineraries. In the summer (August through September 2024) Resilient Lady visits Bordeaux ,  La Coruna , and  Bilbao on the relocation voyage to England.

On February 26, 2024, Virgin Voyages canceled Resilient Lady's 2024-2025 Australian program, citing security concerns (due to the Red Sea war crisis) impacting the ship's scheduled repositioning voyages through the Suez Canal (between Europe and Australia/RepositionCruises.com). Virgin also announced that Resilient Lady (after completing the Mediterranean season on October 20th/2024) will be deployed in the Caribbean and homeported in San Juan (Puerto Rico) offering 7-8-10-11-night roundtrips to St Maarten, St Vincent, Colombia, and Dominica.

Valiant Lady (from  PortMiami  and  San Juan Puerto Rico ) offers Caribbean roundtrips (winter 2023-2024) and in April 2024.

Scarlet Lady in summer 2024 is deployed in the Mediterranean and has scheduled two repositioning voyages - from Barcelona to Civitavecchia-Rome, and a Transatlantic crossing to Miami for a new Caribbean deployement.

The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Cruise Ship and Ship

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

A cruise ship in sea.

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Taylor Eisenhauer

Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Megan Spurrell

Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.

Disney Treasure

  • Launching December 2024

Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.

Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.

  • Launching August 2024

Silversea Cruises is preparing to launch its newest ship, the Silver Ray, in the summer of 2024. The Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship in the Silversea fleet, and it promises to bring ultra-luxury cruising to a new level. With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.

But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.

The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Brilliant Lady

  • Launching TBA 2024

Virgin Voyages, the popular adults-only cruise line, is launching its newest ship, the “Brilliant Lady,” sometime in 2024. The brand new ship will have a capacity of over 2700 passengers and will be an adults-only cruise—perfect for anyone seeking an indulgent cruising experience.

Explora II is the latest ship of Explora Journeys, MSC Group’s newest addition to its luxury brand. With a capacity of slightly over 900 passengers, it’s a smaller cruise ship that promises a more personalized experience for its guests.

Passengers on board the ship will be treated to a range of luxurious amenities that include oversized suites, welcome champagne bottles, an exclusive whiskey and cigar bar with rare whiskeys, an expansive spa, and plenty of bespoke experiences. The ship will sail in the Mediterranean, perfect for passengers looking for a luxurious and intimate cruising experience.

Mein Schiff 7

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech , or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent — Celebrity Cruises Arrow

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent ’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that make a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. Emerald Sakara — Emerald Cruises Arrow

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August, the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles. Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia , has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From $3,850. —David Dickstein

Explora I — Explora Journeys Arrow

Grill is an intimate steakhouse where aging meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs—such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic—curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. Icon of the Seas — Royal Caribbean International Arrow

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map—forgetting your sunscreen, for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the specialty seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crew members dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From $2,249. —Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia — MSC Cruises Arrow

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the European cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details—this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. From $519. —Stefanie Waldek

Norwegian Viva — Norwegian Cruise Line Arrow

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima . There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over the top decks. From $979. —Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista — Oceania Cruises Arrow

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilizers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience— Vista ’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley, and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. This year Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul, Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025 From $2,699. —Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II — Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours Arrow

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse . Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs—and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveler. From $7,455. —Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit — Seabourn Cruise Line Arrow

Pursuit is a small “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear—or damp Arctic expedition gear—in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. Seven Seas Grandeur — Regent Seven Seas Cruises Arrow

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek Isles, and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travelers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving specialty pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur 's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jeweled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From $4,699 . —Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova — Silversea Cruises Arrow

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool, the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova ’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova ’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate—as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture, and place, before even disembarking. From $3,050. —Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton — Viking River Cruises Arrow

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio–designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration—just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travelers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real time, to shepherding travelers through modern night markets with endless fervor. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen—and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travelers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until, that is, your next Aton sailing). Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai. Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship—20-plus to be exact—and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. World Voyager — Atlas Ocean Voyages Arrow

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by. Back in your cozy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant—think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favorite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead.
