The Japanese metal band, Boris, approaches their performance with a form of directness that is both captivating and exhilarating. Their passion for music can clearly be conveyed by their frequency of touring and album releases. The force behind their music is undeniably strong and the way it is presented is flawless and precise.

Boris is a highly unique band, but their distinct influences also clearly come through their music. The band is influenced by a vast array of genres ranging from sludge metal, drone metal, noise rock, and ambient music. They also are influenced by many diverse artists such as Nick Cave, Nick Drake, and Sleep.

Boris’ live performances are highly intense with the loud, pounding sounds of drums and face-melting guitar shredding that their guitarist, Wata, so keenly produces. The bass player, Takeshi, often plays a double-neck bass, which he fiercely strums to create low resonances that really add a depth and structure to the cacophonic sounds produced on the guitar. Boris’ music can often be slow, droning, and ambient, and at other times it can be loud, fast, and heavy. Wata uses an E-bow on her guitar, which is used to vibrate the guitar’s strings to create an orchestral, sustained sound of ambient drones.

Their stage presence is also very captivating. They are all usually dressed in black attire and have long hair, which they fling around stage when they are rocking out to their heavy metal songs. Layers of smoke usually fill the stage that is dimly lit creating a dark, eerie atmosphere, which appropriately compliments their music. During more intense parts of their concerts a bright, flashing light is strobed across the stage creating a sense of excitement.

Boris is sure to impress their audiences with their diversity of musical style. During some parts of the concert they will create long, ambient noise rock that will drone on for large extents of time, and at other times they will play fast paced, in your face metal music that will keep you rocking on your feet.

I was quite excited at the prospect of going to a Boris concert. After hearing "Tokyo Wonderland" on an Apple compilation I became interested in them and their style of music.

Their concert was an experience, I have never heard or seen anything like it before. I cannot tell you what tracks they played but whatever they were very good, and not as loud as I was expecting (thank goodness).

If you enjoy their style of music or even just know one song, go and see them, you will not be disappointed.

I was lucky enough to meet the 2 guitarists in a Japanese restaurant before the concert and he hoped I would enjoy the show, well I certainly did enjoy it.

Thank you very much Boris!!

Wonderfully talented band that make a lot of noise. They played their more commercial tunes and just a little drone. They even threw in a punk song. And Wata (the guitarist) got to sing on one song. There is no band (to my knowledge))that has such a wide range of music styles and can play this well. The only consistent thing across songs is the load distorted guitar. There is no better band live. Downside - the set was too short at < 80 minutes and no encore.

Amazing band. They played Pink in its entirety. Very loud, great performance overall. Definitely want to watch them again. Earplugs are REQUIRED if you value your hearing.

Show highlights: Wata's guitar solo in 'Pink', 'Electric', the entirety of 'Just Abandoned Myself' but especially the noise finisher, and of course 'Farewell'.

What a gig! One of the best I've ever been to. The energy from the band was enormous, the crowd loved it and the sound was great (props to the sound team at the Rosemount - a big improvement on last time I was there).

11/10 would mosh again.

Boris did an amazing show. They played for two hours and the setlist was epic! They played edited versions of both Feedbacker and Flood. Everybody needs to see this band live.

You don't just see Boris. You experience Boris.

A palace of sound was created before us, for us to enjoy and dwell another world between space. One of the best shows I've ever been to.. it's one thing to listen to Boris, another to experience a show and the waves of sound.

Boris absolutely killed it at the Pyramid Scheme. Super high energy and came back for an encore. This is the 3rd or 4th show of theirs I've been to, and I would highly recommend seeing them if you get the chance.

Melvins + Boris Each Playing a Classic Album in Full on 43-Date 2023 U.S. Tour

Melvins and Boris have just announced the "Twins of Evil" tour, a 43-date trek through the United States which will find each band playing one of their classic albums in full.

For Melvins, they'll be celebrating their 1991 underground classic  Bullhead , while Boris will perform all if 2002's Heavy Rocks , making it a can't-miss night for fans of sludgy, experimental heavy music. And it's just plain amusing that Boris, who named themselves after one of the standout cuts on  Bullhead , are appearing on this commemorative run.

“40 years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil' tour with our friends, Boris,” enthuses Melvins frontman/guitarist Buzz Osborne , “This will be a stone groove!”

Boris’ Takeshi (vocals, bass, guitar) adds, “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-'80s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead .”

The Twins of Evil Tour kicks off in Los Angeles on Aug. 24 and will conclude in another California city, San Diego, on Oct. 14. Opening each night will be Mr. Phylzzz.

Japanese band Boris brings its American-style rock music on tour

boris band tour

When some Tokyo musicians started a rock band three decades ago, they took their name from a song by a group from Aberdeen, Wash. No, not Nirvana, but a Nirvana precursor, the proto-grunge Melvins.

So was born Boris, which has maintained its devotion to Melvins ever since. Now the two groups are touring together for the first time, playing a nearly two-month U.S. tour that arrives in D.C. this weekend.

“It’s quite an honor,” according to Boris drummer Atsuo, who like guitarist-bassist Takeshi and guitarist-keyboardist Wata uses only his given name. “When Boris first started out, they were our biggest influence. To think that we’re touring the U.S. together, it’s an unbelievable thing.”

Atsuo made his comments by email through a translator to avoid any stumbling over language barriers. Although the band often uses English in its lyrics and song titles, the words Takeshi and Atsuo include when they write songs are always ones that have been assimilated into everyday Japanese, Atsuo explained. “We use a lot of words like that. That said, you could say our lyrics are almost entirely written in Japanese.”

The wildly prolific Boris has released three albums in the last 13 months, one made with Uniform, a New York industrial-rock trio. That record is just the latest in a long string of the Japanese band’s collaborations. Boris’s repertoire includes heavy metal; raw noise; minimalist drone; and dreamier, more melodic material that often features Wata’s soprano. (All three members sing.)

The band’s various styles are linked by a common compositional approach, rooted in jam sessions and a reliance on electronic timbres and textures. “Effects pedals themselves can yield songs,” Atsuo said before turning mystical. “Without the feedback produced by the mega-volume of our amps, we could not be connected to this world.”

With three new albums, the band has plenty of fresh material. But this tour won’t feature any of it. Instead, the concerts highlight the first U.S. release of a 2002 record, one of three the band has released with the same title, “Heavy Rocks.” Long available as an import only, the album has just been issued stateside by Jack White’s Third Man Records.

To celebrate, Atsuo said, Boris proposed playing a few joint shows with Melvins to that band’s singer-guitarist, Buzz Osborne. “We said, ‘We’d love it if you could you perform the album ‘Bullhead,’ since it’s the album that has the song ‘Boris’ from which we took our name.’ Buzz kindly agreed, and then it became a full tour.”

“We’re watching them perform and absorbing their show every night, and that reflects in our own show,” Atsuo added. “We’ve already learned so much from their working methods and their playing.”

“Every night we resonate off of each other.”

Boris is using the album’s two slightly different versions to keep things fresh, Atsuo noted. “On this tour, we’re alternating nightly between performing the Japanese version and the overseas version, including the order of songs. Some songs have also been arranged and extended” into Boris’s present-day style.

Comparing the response to Boris in its homeland and abroad, Atsuo distinguishes not between the audiences but between the broader contexts. “We have enthusiastic fans both in Japan and overseas, but the respective music scenes are completely different,” he said, because Japan has no intrinsic rock culture. “In a sense, you could say we’re an American band.”

About The Melvins

The Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year), has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band’s 40-year history, they’ve released 30-plus original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they’ve partnered with Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and Fantômas for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, the Melvins completed the “51 States in 51 Days” (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film “Across The USA in 51 Days.” The current incarnation of the band is Osborne, Crover, and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross/OFF!). Previous line-ups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with Big Business band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis, a four-piece featuring the current trio plus Butthole Surfers’ Jeff Pinkus, as well as Melvins Lite, which partners Osborne and Crover with Mr. Bungle’s Trevor Dunn. Sometimes, if you’re extra lucky, one version of the Melvins will open for the Melvins.

THE MELVINS And BORIS Announce 'Twins Of Evil' Co-Headlining Tour

THE MELVINS , continuing their 40th-anniversary celebrations, have announced the "Twins Of Evil" tour, a seven-week trek that sees the Los Angeles-by-way-of-Washington band joined by Japanese trio BORIS , with both groups performing classic albums in their entirety: "Bullhead" ( MELVINS ) and "Heavy Rocks" ( BORIS ).

"40 years as THE MELVINS !!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the 'Twins Of Evil' tour with our friends, BORIS ," Buzz Osborne shares of a set that will see the iconic band perform the beloved 'Bullhead' album in its entirety, as well as additional tracks across their discography. "This will be a stone groove!"

BORIS 's Takeshi adds: "Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that BORIS and THE MELVINS would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, THE MELVINS have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, BORIS is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty MELVINS , and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, 'Bullhead' ."

THE MELVINS have already had an eventful 40th-anniversary year, recently wrapping up a stint on the Ipecac "Geek Show" tour with labelmates MR. BUNGLE and SPOTLIGHTS , before venturing overseas for the band's first European outing since 2018. The group were also recently featured on a series of Revolver covers, marking their 1983 inception with a trio of portraits shot by TOOL 's Adam Jones . Ipecac Recordings has spent the year highlighting previously released MELVINS ' albums with quick-to-sell-out vinyl reissues.

Tickets for the "Twins Of Evil" tour go on sale this Friday, June 9 at 10 a.m. local time. MR. PHYLZZZ opens on all dates.

THE MELVINS are one of modern music's most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year),has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band's 40-year history, they've released 30-plus original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they've partnered with Jello Biafra , MUDHONEY and FANTÔMAS for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, THE MELVINS completed the "51 States In 51 Days" (50 states + DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film "Across The USA In 51 Days" . The current incarnation of the band is Osborne , Crover and Steven McDonald ( REDD KROSS , OFF! ). Previous lineups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with BIG BUSINESS band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis , a four-piece featuring the current trio plus BUTTHOLE SURFERS ' Jeff Pinkus , as well as MELVINS LITE , which partners Osborne and Crover with MR. BUNGLE 's Trevor Dunn . Sometimes, if you're extra lucky, one version of THE MELVINS will open for THE MELVINS .

From Violence to Serenity: Inside Boris' Dual-Album Awakening 'NOW'

boris 2021 yoshihiro mori crop, Yoshihiro Mori

Revolver  has teamed with Boris on an exclusive vinyl variant of their new album  W  on "sea blue with black blob" wax. Only 300 copies were made —  get yours now!

In 2020, Japanese experimental heavy crew Boris (like many people across the globe) were feeling the stifling weight and emotional strain of the global pandemic. To channel their frustrations, they dropped NO — an aggressive, punky slab of cathartic metal. But that was only one piece of the puzzle.

This January Boris completed their pandemic-inspired project with the release of their new album W , which links with NO  "to form  NOW , a duo of releases that respond to one another." The haunting, drony, vibey W finds singer-guitarist Wata leading the band, as well listeners, beyond the strife and dissonance of NO to a transformative place of serenity and healing.

"This difficult situation caused great damage to our mind and body," says Wata of 2020's lockdowns, "but sublimating blocked feelings in NO and the process of steadily expanding relaxed songs like the ones in W became our own form of healing."

On W healing takes many forms. Sometimes it's confronting hellacious events through whispers and sublime distortion ("Beyond Good And Evil" addresses the atomic attack on Hiroshima, Wata's hometown); other times it's creating propulsive, avant-garde, ambient dance music ("Drowning By Numbers") or manifesting crushing monoliths of searing guitars and speaker-fried fuzz ("You Will Know (Ohayo Version)).

But at all times (and at all volumes), Boris — which also includes vocalist/bassist Takeshi and vocalist/drummer Atsuo — embrace and embody the heaviness that's been their stock-in-trade since they emerged in the early Nineties. "The word 'heavy' has various forms and meanings,'" Wata tells us. "We've consistently worked on various forms of heavy sounds. I think you'll be able to hear elements that lead to the atmosphere of this album before heavy loud sounds start … and in reverberations."

Ahead of W 's January 21st release via Sacred Bones, we caught up with Wata for a chat about the expansive vision behind the band's latest heavy expressions.

boris wata 2021 yoshihiro mori, Yoshihiro Mori

IN 2020, YOU RELEASED NO  AS A RESPONSE TO THE NEGATIVE ENERGY OF THE PANDEMIC. WHAT HAVE THESE COVID TIMES BEEN LIKE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? WATA All planned live performances and tours were canceled, but fortunately, we were still able to reserve the studio we always use even during the lockdown. We stayed there and constantly recorded. It was no longer possible to gain heat and power from the live venues and receive feedback for production activities. Instead, we constantly faced and explored new sounds in the studio.

DID YOU DEVELOP ANY NEW CREATIVE ROUTINES OR HOBBIES TO HELP YOU GET THROUGH THE STRESS AND PERIODS OF ISOLATION? There were things I could no longer do, but because of that situation, I tried new and discovered new things. As a band, we were able to focus on studio work, find methods to connect with listeners worldwide such as through Bandcamp, the band never stopped moving. Maybe we were even busier than pre-COVID. For me, I had more time to immerse myself in my favorite games.

NO AND W ARE COMPANION PIECES, BUT MUCH DIFFERENT SONICALLY. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE MUSICAL VISION BEHIND THIS YEAR'S W AND HOW IT RELATES TO NO . If NO were to display anger and violent emotions, W would be serenity and awakening. Whether it's about the world or ourselves within, conflicting emotions and states constantly co-exist like both pairs of wheels. NO and W together become NOW — by listening to both works, I believe that the conflicting feelings will connect, and you'll be able to feel the world we live in  NOW .

TYPICALLY, VOCAL DUTIES ARE SHARED BY THE ENTIRE BAND. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO SING ALL THE LEAD VOCALS ON W ? In Boris everyone takes on the vocals, but it is the scenery and guided words from the progress of songs that lead the direction on who sings or how they sing, in the process of completing the song. It's a flow that occurs very naturally. NO had an indispensable sound image with intense vocals by Atsuo and Takeshi. In the process of making W , the image of me singing emerged, and the lyrics and arrangements expanded from there. Rather than a vocalist conveying opinions and messages, I see myself more as one of the musical instruments expressing the worldly view.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT SOME OF  W 'S LYRICAL THEMES? I KNOW THE SECOND SINGLE "BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL" CONFRONTS THE LEGACY OF THE ATOMIC ATTACK ON HIROSHIMA IN WORLD WAR II. As mentioned before, serenity is at the root of W , which is the complete opposite of NO . But it's not just "healing" that it represents, but more like an image of knocking on human beings' consciousness to encourage an "awakening." Even in casual scenery and awareness of our everyday lives, there are tremendous possibilities and happiness hidden — those types of thoughts led to the creation of the lyrics.

MUSIC-WISE, HOW WAS W  WRITTEN? WERE THESE TRACKS BUILT FROM IMPROVISATIONS? Yes. W was also completely self-recorded. Atsuo edited the tracks from jam sessions to build the song structures, and Takeshi and I added riffs and melody to them. For this album, we requested Buffalo Daughter's suGar Yoshinaga with the sound production. We'd always liked Buffalo Daughter and we hoped to make something with her one day, so it was great timing. The basics of W were completed by June 2020, and we handed over the sound source to suGar right away. With her post-production, the music evolved more, expanding the worldview of the work to areas far beyond our expectations, and became a wonderful work.

THE DEBUT SINGLE "DROWNING BY NUMBERS" IS A HAUNTING SONG FULL OF DRONING GUITARS AND PROPULSIVE BEATS. CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW THAT CAME TOGETHER? We first improvised with drums and guitars for "Drowning By Numbers". With editing, we built the skeletal structure of the song, added bass lines, and overdubbed various instruments. At this point, we still can't see its complete form. We improvised the song's melody over this, and found that the theme of the song was "numbers." By focusing on the theme, we created the words and song, and suGar Yoshinaga added arrangements and post-production. Instead of someone leading the songwriting process, we tilt our ears to listen to the voice of the song itself to understand "how they want to be" and constantly keep changing to reach completion.

"DROWNING BY NUMBERS" PREMIERED WITH AN INTENSE DANCE PERFORMANCE VIDEO. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE CONCEPT BEHIND THAT VIDEO AND HOW IT REFLECTS THE MUSIC? The concept evolved from a collaboration with Kei Miyata, who was originally a founding member of KARAs, a contemporary dance company. We had a 40-minute showcase with dancers dancing to our unreleased sound source. We asked Yukiko Doi, one of the dancers from the showcase, to participate in the production of the "Drowning By Numbers" music video. Even at this showcase, the dancers were dancing with "Drowning By Numbers" playing in the background, and the music video was the extension of that. She has a very wide range of styles — from classical and neoclassical ballet to contemporary dance — and her beautiful physical expression led to the development of ideas for the visuals

"THE FALLEN" HAS A REALLY NICE BUILD-AND-RELEASE STRUCTURE AND A BEAUTIFUL AMPLIFIED MIDDLE SECTION. WHAT DO YOU RECALL ABOUT WRITING IT? W has a quiet impression overall, but "The Fallen" is one of the peaks within the album. It's an instrumental song that doesn't contain my singing, and it's a song that was completed like a single stroke during our jam session. I think it's our natural way of being to have an album that contains conflicting expressions: in this case, not just serenity but also songs that are loud and heavy.

boris wata 2021 yoshihiro mori, Yoshihiro Mori

"YOU WILL KNOW (OHAYO VERSION)" IS A MASSIVE, HEAVY TRACK. WHAT WAS YOUR MAIN GUITAR AND AMPLIFIER FOR CREATING THOSE RIFFS AND RICH DISTORTIONS? I use the usual Les Paul with the Matamp. I also used the Tape Echo and E-Bow. Takeshi used B.C. Rich Warbeast for the guitar, and Sunn Model-T for the amp. For pedals: Death by audio ROOMS, EarthQuaker Devices Aqueduct, Shiftline Astronaut and Strymon Timeline. He said he emits tremors with things like tremolo arms and delay modulation with Aqueduct and Timeline.

WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE FOR 2022; WILL BORIS BE TOURING AT ALL? Boris will be welcoming our 30-year anniversary this year. We can't give details yet, but we have various plans prepared. It also depends on what situation we end up in with COVID, but we'd definitely love to pursue live shows and tours.

Kaiser Chiefs: “Boris Johnson took a weird dislike to our band and I don’t know why”

In Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?!, we quiz an artist on their own career to see how much they can remember – and find out if the booze, loud music and/or tour sweeties has knocked the knowledge out of them. This week: Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson takes the ultimate test!

Kaiser Chiefs Ricky Wilson

1 Which former prime minister wrote a bizarre article in 2006 where he branded the Kaiser Chiefs “the weeds from Leeds”?

“ Boris Johnson .”

“He took a weird dislike to our band and I don’t know why, because you’d think we’d be right up his street. [ Laughs ] I say that jokingly. He also said when he was a student, he didn’t predict riots, he started them, and called me an ‘epic softie’. That’s still my Twitter bio . I don’t know what an ‘epic softie’ is, but it’s probably something you’d call someone if you’d been to boarding school in the ‘80s and were trying to sound cool in the ’00s. If you were going to have a new pop star, Epic Softie is a perfectly acceptable name, so I don’t mind being called that.”

When his successor Liz Truss gave her resignation speech in 2022, she was almost drowned out by activist Steve Bray playing the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘I Predict a Riot’…

“That was marvellous work because that song captured the way people were feeling.”

2 When Girls Aloud covered the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘I Predict a Riot’ live on their ‘Chemistry’ tour in 2006, what did they change the lyric “ Borrow a pound for a condom”  to?

“ Borrow a pound for a phone call .”

WRONG. ‘Borrow a pound for the bus home.’

“I really liked them. In the mid-noughties, we were cool for 15 minutes and then we went mainstream – and I enjoyed that a lot more. It was nicer sofas in dressing rooms. When even NME were taking the piss out of us, we found new contemporaries like Girls Aloud – and went toe-to-toe with them in charts. They made me raise the bar to thinking: ‘Our next single has to beat Girls Aloud’, rather than ‘Our next single has to beat insert also-ran indie band here’ .  They were really cool – and I still think they’re cool. I saw them before Christmas and performed one of their songs – badly! – at their fundraiser for Sarah Harding ’s charity. And they didn’t take the piss out of me!”

You also played the late Sarah Harding’s boyfriend, named ‘Rock Star’, in the 2009 St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold movie…

“That was dodgy but weird!”

Additionally, you performed a mash-up of Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Never Miss a Beat’/Girls Aloud’s ‘Sound of the Underground’ on their 2008 ITV1 special The Girls Aloud Party …

“I don’t remember that! Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Brain Cells? Yes!”

3 Which four acts did you beat to receive the Best Dressed gong at the 2006 NME Awards?

“This question is null and void! The year before, The Killers ’ Brandon Flowers won it and he had the trophy in his hand at the end of the night, but when I won in 2006, I never received the one-finger-salute statuette, so it’s a non-question!”

OK: Name the four acts you beat when you didn’t receive the Best Dressed Award…

“If I’d received it, I would be telling people whenever they looked at my award shelf: ‘You know who I beat for that…’, but I haven’t so I’ll guess Carl Barât , Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand , the singer of Neils Children [John Linger] and The Cribs ’ Ryan Jarman?”

WRONG. But close! You triumphed over Brandon Flowers, Alex Kapranos, Liam Gallagher , and Pete Doherty .

“There was always drama at the NME Awards. The first time I went in 2005, some guy from another record label made hand-signals at me when we were performing onstage. I was so pissed off, I marched around trying to find him afterwards. A year later, Ryan Jarman jumped onto our table and split his side open and I had to sit in the ambulance with him – he was trying to get out! [ Laughs ] I’d been on tour with The Cribs enough times to know he’s indestructible though. They’re in my Top Five bands of all time because they’re both rock’n’roll in the music they make and their attitude towards it. Their legacy will last forever and we’ll be listening them longer than most other bands from that time.”

Speaking of beating Liam Gallagher to Best Dressed…

“I didn’t beat Liam Gallagher to Best Dressed because I DIDN’T GET THE AWARD!!!”

… Oasis had a few pops over the years (for example, Noel Gallagher once quipped: “I did drugs for 18 years and I never got that bad to say, ‘You know what? I think the Kaiser Chiefs are brilliant'”). Ever encounter them afterwards and have a laugh about it?

“I’ve met up with them, but we haven’t laughed about old pops they’ve had at me, because I’m not the kind of guy who would confront Liam Gallagher about the things he’s said about me in the past, because I’m sure he’s forgotten most of them and I don’t care. Would I like to be his friend? Definitely. Do I think I could be? Probably not. I think he’s very good at being at hilarious. I don’t think he’s ever tried to be hurtful towards me – and long may he reign in his hilarity.”

4 At a Kaiser Chiefs New York gig in 2008, what pseudonym did you use to introduce Mark Ronson onstage?

“Probably Ron Markson? No idea!”

WRONG. You introduced him as “Saul Rosenbaum, our New York lawyer” – and later crowdsurfed to the bar during ‘ The Angry Mob ’ to pour yourself a whisky.

“That must have been Mark’s idea, because that doesn’t flick any synapses in my head! I don’t do it anymore, but crowdsurfing to the bar was the oldest trick in the book. It makes people laugh even more if you can bring a whole tray of tequila back – which I did on many occasions!”

“ Mark Ronson is fun to hang out with. When we were making our third album, ‘Off With Their Heads’, with him our guitarist Whitey used to refer to him as ‘The Sleeping Millionaire’, because he’d come in every day after being at a celebrity bash and find the cosiest place in the studio to fall asleep.”

“One time when I was in the pub with Mark, Amy Winehouse arrived. You could see the paparazzi bulbs flashing outside. She sat next to me being quiet. I didn’t realise until I got home that she was playing a game with herself to see how many sweets she could fill my pockets with while I wasn’t looking. I had a whole packet of Mentos in one pocket! Every pocket – including those in my obligatory waistcoats – were filled with Haribo. I loved her intensely and think she’s the greatest artist of our generation.”

5 In a jokey pre-encore video the Kaiser Chiefs played on tour in 2015, which rock icon calls you “Mr Fucking Celebrity TV Judge”, before admonishing you by saying: “If I was a fucking judge on that TV show and your band came up and played like that, you know what I would say? Your band played like shit. Get your act together – you’re systematically destroying your legend.”

“ Dave Grohl .”

“We toured with the Foo Fighters a lot, and I thought it would be good to have a pre-encore video where Dave storms into our dressing room and tells us to go out there and tear a new arsehole. But we then had to agree to wear the same clothes we were wearing at the time for the whole tour [Laughs ]. Dave inexplicably likes the Kaiser Chiefs as well, so that was good.”

6 According to the liner notes of Kaiser Chiefs’ debut album ‘Employment’, who is the motorcycle that appears at the beginning of the track ‘Saturday Night’ owned and “played by”?

“It’s Graham Coxon ’s motorcycle.”

“He was annoyed because we credited the wrong motorcycle. We put it as something like a 750cc Manx TT Works Racer – and he sent us a message saying it was a Honda XX 14 or something. I don’t know about motorcycles! He came into the studio, and we got him to rev up his motorbike, because we love Blur and thought it would be good to get a member on the album – and we didn’t want them singing or playing guitar.”

7 Name any three celebrities the judges mistook you for when you appeared as Phoenix on the 2023 series of The Masked Singer .

“David Tennant, Stephen Mulhern, and Jason Statham.”

“David Tennant was texting me a lot during that asking ‘Is it you?’ and I’d reply: ‘No, it’s obviously you David!’. The first time I met David Tennant was when we did an NME article together when he became Doctor Who , and we’ve been friends ever since.”

8 Which famously irascible Salford frontman once suggested that “the Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys should open a chain of chip shops in North Yorkshire”?

“ Mark E Smith .”

CORRECT. The late Fall frontman said in 2006: “I think the Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys should open a chain of chip shops in North Yorkshire. I think the East Germans had it right actually. Every group used to have a permit. Until they came up with anything culturally relevant like a classical composition, I think they should bring them in here. I should start a musical Stasi. If you can’t play in fookin’ time, then fook off back to the factory.”

“I respect and admire Mark E Smith a lot, and I’d respect and admire him a lot less if he respected me! [ Laughs ] So well done Mark E, RIP. You know what though, nobody ever said that he should have opened a tent company called Marquee Smiths.”

9 Complete the following lyrics: “ Ra-ra-Rasputin, England’s got a goal machine/He’s Harry Kane and he’s going to score …”?

“[ Laughs ] I don’t know! That was the World Cup song I did with Freddie Flintoff? Freddie Flintoff, me, and [ex] Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy were in a studio once and I don’t remember much of what we did – but the extension on my house does!”

WRONG . It’s indeed from your collaboration with former cricketer Freddie Flintoff, a rewrite of Boney M’s ‘Rasputin’ to coincide with the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The rest of the lyrics are: “ Ra-ra-Rasputin/He’s captain of the England team/He’s off to Russia to lay down the law. |

“Oh, really? Sounds terrible!”

Any reaction from Harry Kane?

“I’ve met him. I don’t think he was grateful. I think he was too busy thinking about playing for England at the time, and I was thinking about the extension on my house!”

10 You appeared in the audience of the The Mrs. Merton Show as a teenager in 1995. What question did you ask Barbara Windsor?

“I asked her how young she’d go.”

CORRECT. A flirty question in response to the late EastEnders star commenting she liked younger men. Did you ever run into Caroline Aherne, who starred as the eponymous pensioner, Windsor, or Mrs. Merton co-creator Craig Cash after gaining fame with Kaiser Chiefs?

“No. I was at school, and got tickets to see it in Manchester because I thought Caroline Aherne was a genius and wanted to see her in action. I fucking loved it! She was inspirational, and so funny. I wish they’d allow comedians to spread their wings like that now, and not give them simple formats like quiz shows.”

Tell us about the Kaiser Chiefs’ forthcoming ‘ Easy Eighth Album ’. Was there a battleplan going into it?

“As the title suggests, it was to make it as easy as possible. We didn’t want to worry about what anybody else thought about it apart from us. We do social commentary well, and we also do party tunes well. We worked with Nile Rodgers for it, and I don’t think I’ll be able to appreciate for years to come how much that was an important moment, ‘cause you have to divorce yourself from it in the studio and not just keep asking Nile: ‘What sandwich would Bowie order?’”

The verdict: 6/10

“The ones I didn’t get were impossible, so I’m not bothered. I don’t see them as questions. They didn’t even make sense to me!”

Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Easy Eighth Album’ is released March 1. The band tour the UK from April.

Pasternak House Museum: THINKING OF YOU, BORIS

THINKING OF YOU, BORIS Part 1: The Pasternak House Museum is for those who have a love for, or an interest in the writings of Boris Pasternak. This famous Russian poet, 1890-1960, said that to be a great poet it was not enough to write poetry. One must also “contribute in some vital way to the life of the times.”1 It is essential that such poets, Pasternak emphasized, “respond submissively to their high and lonely destiny.” Such poets do not chose poetry as a vocation; they are singled out, in some unmistakable fashion, by destiny. Pasternak was “overcome by an irresistible urge to write poetry; poetry literally seized possession of him in 1912/13." In the next few years he was confirmed in this overpowering sense that poetry was an experience which came naturally to him. But it did not consume him, and he did not project himself as a poet with its intermittent inspirations, at least not in those first and early years. I was attracted to both this museum and this analysis of Pasternak and his work in Max Hayward’s introduction to Olga Ivinskaya’s biography of Pasternak:A Captive of Time: My Years With Pasternak(Fontana, 1978). I had a similar experience, not in my early adulthood, as was the case with Pasternak, but in my middle age, in my late forties. At first I, too, did not project myself as a poet. By my early sixties, the early years of my late adulthood, a period from 60 to 80 according to one model of human development used by psychologists, I had begun to become comfortable with this label, this literary avocation, this terminological assignation. Part 2: This new, this fresh and personal poetic nomenclature has been part of my patina, indeed, as the years advanced into my 70s, part of the luster and gloss that I recognize as my literary life and its several accomplishments. I had contributed to my society in a vital way as a teacher for 32 years, and as a student for 18. After that half-century my emotions and perceptions have gone through fifteen years(1999-2014) of an exceptional pitch of intensity, an impetuous flow of language. This language had been released in a flow which shows no signs of letting up as I write these words in the first months of my 70s.-Ron Price with thanks to 1Max Hayward, “Introduction,” A Captive of Time: My Years With Pasternak, Olga Ivinskaya, Fontana Books, 1978. It was not a revolution and a love affair that brought on this impetuous flow; I’m not sure I will ever know for sure but it was another type of love affair that had slowly ripened over decades, so unobtrusively amidst the ragged bone and chouder shops, amidst the fatigue, & all the talking--the endless talking not to mention listening, surely one of my life’s most demanding tasks, especially after those fifty years(1949-1999) of being subjected to an excess of speech, and what were, it seems to me, its deadly poisons which can devour heart & soul. I, too, Boris, had my melancholy and depressions, so low I fell in love with thanatos, easeful death; but, as you said, there would appear once more things that had long lain dormant; they were noble, creative and great things for a time of final accounting, an accounting which you had planned for so long, it seems, as I read your story. Boris, I think of you now that you have been gone for more than half a century1, especially after reading how Zhivago got out from your woodsman's retreat where your long apparent insouciance allowed you to enjoy life's comforts before making your claim to be part of, possess the tragic Russian soul, to assuage your guilt, & express your desire for martyrdom2, to suffer as all true poets do and must: must they Boris??? 1 Boris Pasternak, Front Page in Olga Ivinskaya, op.cit., Pasternak told his readers to think of him after he has passed on, when life would be richer and more fruitful than ever before, at a time of a great accounting. 2 For these ideas, this view of the last years of Boris Pasternak, go to Frances Stoner Saunders, "On the 'Zhivago' Story," The London Review of Books, V.36, N. 18, 25/9/'14. 3. The above prose-poem was inspired, to some extent, by this museum, this house museum of Pasternak's. Ron Price 26/7/'07 to 25/9/'14.

A pleasant place to visit for the afternon. Difficult to get to. Either by electric train from Kievski Station or by taxi from Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station (1000 roubles). Small but atmospheric house with an excellent guide. 100 roubles entry. Look out for the old TV and enjoy the beautiful upstairs room.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

2024 Cannes Film Festival Lineup Revealed: Paul Schrader, Andrea Arnold, and David Cronenberg Among Competition Filmmakers

T he 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn (stateside, anyway) on Thursday, April 10. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. ET. See the full lineup below.

The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis. Coppola previously won Palme d’Or honors for “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now,” and it was already confirmed prior to Thursday’s lineup announcement that “Megalopolis” will receive a Competition premiere , making Coppola eligible for the Palme again. Coppola’s friend George Lucas will receive the Honorary Palme d’Or at the festival’s closing ceremony.

Frémaux overall announced 19 films in competition so far, promising there will be 22, with more announcements to come: Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold, David Cronenberg, Ali Abbasi, Sean Baker, Jia Zhangke, Paul Schrader, and Paolo Sorrentino are among this year’s competition filmmakers.

Also headed to the festival Out of Competition is George Miller’s “Furiosa,” his prequel to 2015 Cannes premiere “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film will bring stars like Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth to the Grand Théâtre Lumière for some flashy red-carpet moments.

And bringing star wattage to Cannes is Kevin Costner with his two-part directorial effort “Horizon: An America Saga,” premiering Out of Competition before the two films hit theaters this summer. Idiosyncratic French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux’s star-studded comedy “The Second Act” will open the festival , bringing Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and Raphaël Quenard to the Croisette. The film is also debuting Out of Competition.

As previously announced, Greta Gerwig serves as president of the Competition jury.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
