The new Aussie Specialist Program website
Tourism Australia has relaunched the award-winning Aussie Specialist Program and made it easier for travel sellers around the world to gain the skills they need to better promote and sell Australia.
The Aussie Specialist Program, which is run in conjunction with Australia’s State and Territory Tourism Organisations, has been given a new look and feel in its 32nd year and the new program has greater personalisation, faster qualifying times and shorter more interactive training modules.
Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said the investment comes after many frontline travel sellers turned to the Aussie Specialist Program over the past 18 months to learn and position themselves as champions for Australian travel once borders re-open.
“Australia remains one of the most desirable travel destinations in the world and the Aussie Specialist Program helps to ensure we will be in the best possible position to convert travel demand into bookings as soon as borders re-open,” Ms Harrison said.
“We now have more than 26,000 qualified Aussie Specialists worldwide and hope the new program will allow more agents to complete their learning so they too can best sell Australian tourism experiences.”
The improvements to the Aussie Specialist Program were made in conjunction with more than 400 stakeholders and 1,000 existing Aussie Specialist agents.
The Aussie Specialist Program is available in nine languages and is jointly promoted by Tourism Australia and all eight State and Territory tourism partners.

The Aussie Specialist Program is Tourism Australia’s global travel agent training program, run in conjunction with Australia’s State and Territory Tourism Organisations (STOs).
The Aussie Specialist Program is designed to provide international travel sellers with the knowledge and skills to promote and sell Australia as a destination. It offers agents an online platform and training resources to learn about Australia, helping them to promote and sell the destination more effectively.
Currently there are more than 26,000 qualified Aussie Specialists worldwide.

The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) is the peak industry body that represents the interests of travel professionals and businesses. Founded in 1957 as the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA), ATIA seeks to enhance the professionalism of travel professionals through:
- Champion Members and be a trusted, transparent and consistent association that represents Australia’s travel industry;
- Identify and establish initiatives that improve the performance of Travel Intermediaries;
- Be an effective representative for Members through meaningful advocacy to support, defend and influence decision makers for the benefit of the tourism and travel sector;
- Promote and defend the importance of industry led regulation that enhances business and consumer outcomes through the increasing of domestic and international travel by Australians;
- Uphold a nationally recognised accreditation scheme for Travel Intermediaries that demonstrates to consumers their professional standing within the travel industry;
- Drive the best practice of service delivery by requiring Members to meet the requirements set out in the ATAS Charter as well as the ATAS Code of Conduct, and providing for suitable consequences when these requirements are not met;
- Facilitate the resolution of disputes arising between Members and consumers in the travel industry;
- Ensure the professionalism of the Travel Intermediary industry into the future;
- Ensure best practice governance principles are followed by the Board, management and Members at all times.
ATIA's role within the travel and tourism industry involves addressing major issues relating to the operation of all travel businesses in Australia, at both a State and Federal level. ATIA prides itself on being the industry watchdog that ensures the viewpoint of the agent is well represented in the media and effectively advocated for through lobbying activities.
Our mission is to enhance the professionalism of our members through their effective representation in industry and government affairs, education and training and by identifying and satisfying the needs of the travelling public.

Introducing Travel Training Australia
Co-founded by Leanne Townsend and Kevin Westerdale in 2014, Travel Training Australia is a specialist travel training company offering a variety of travel courses and training services.
Kevin and Leanne worked together for 10 years in a large training organisation in Brisbane where they were award winning trainers and assessors. In 2014, they decided to combine their knowledge and experience in education, their passion for the Travel Industry and small business expertise, to start their own bespoke training college; Travel Training Australia.
In a relatively short period of time, Travel Training Australia has built a solid reputation for quality and outstanding customer service and is well-known in the industry as a leading travel training company. As a ‘boutique’ training company Leanne and Kevin offer a very personalized experience for each student and provide a unique training program that incorporates their vast experience to give every student the tools they need to achieve high quality outcomes that will help them to be job ready for the travel industry. Great attention to detail and the most up to date course content, along with the use of 21st century technology ensure their students receive a quality training experience.
Kevin and Leanne were the integral teaching team winning the prestigious AFTA National Travel Industry Award for the best training institution two years in succession (2010, 2011) in past teaching roles, and as Travel Training Australia were again recognised and awarded the AFTA National Travel Industry Award in 2017.
Kevin has been in the travel industry for over 24 years where he has held key management roles including ticket office manager and customer service manager with Concorde International Travel (now Air Tickets Australia). Kevin is our ‘airfare guru’ with vast experience and knowledge in the complex world of IATA airfares and ticketing, making him a much sought after travel trainer.
Kevin operates a very popular airfares helpdesk service which assists new and experienced travel agents with international airfare construction and general troubleshooting.
He is also a travel agent in his spare time and a very keen soccer fan so he is always open to a quick chat in all things soccer related.
Kevin has 10 years teaching experience with a major training institute in Brisbane, and since 2014 Kevin has developed and delivered online courses in international airfares, ticketing, reservations and travel agency operations for Travel Training Australia.
Kevin’s formal qualifications include a Diploma of Tourism and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Meet Leanne
Leanne is a teacher and travel industry professional, experienced in managing travel agency operations, small business ownership, and travel teaching and training. As a travel consultant and owner/manager of an award-winning, high profile travel agency franchise located in Sydney, Leanne gained a wealth of knowledge in business and travel industry expertise that has led to a successful teaching career spanning 16 years teaching Certificate III and Diploma courses in Travel and Tourism.
As an experienced small business owner, Leanne has well developed project management and business compliance skills to ensure Travel Training Australia is managed and operated well within ASQA and ATAS/AFTA standards and guidelines.
Maintaining strong links to industry through consulting and in her part-time role as Training & Development Coordinator for a leading home-based host agency, Leanne is well qualified to guide students in the right direction to ensure they are job ready once they complete their studies.
Leanne is committed to teaching and learning excellence, and whilst studying for her Bachelor of Further Education and Training at the University of Southern Queensland, she specialized in the fields of teaching and learning in a flexible environment, designing, writing and implementing educational programs, online facilitating and communications. Additional qualifications include the Diploma of Tourism and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
