Most people visit Glen Rose to check out the dinosaur tracks that are cemented into the mud of the Paluxy River at Dinosaur Valley State Park.

Glen Rose also offers an opportunity to get up close and personal with wildlife, including giraffes, deer, ostriches, and more at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.

Being in the heart of the Texas wine country, Fredericksburg has many wineries in and near the town center. You could spend a week or longer and still not try all of the Texas wine in this region!

Some of the best Fredericksburg wineries to consider are Fat Ass Ranch, Messina Hof, Grape Creek Vineyards, and Becker Vineyards. Hours vary by winery, so be sure to check their website.

During your time in Fredericksburg, be sure to go to Enchanted Rock State Park.

This huge dome-shaped pink granite rock has been welcoming visitors for decades.

The American Indians that once roamed this land believed that Enchanted Rock even contained special spiritual powers.

Today, you can hike Enchanted Rock and explore the hiking trails at Enchanted Rock State Park at your leisure. Just be sure to make a reservation as this park gets busy and will often fill up on the weekends.

This is a great area to spend a night out.

Of course, there are several museums and historic sites to check out while in Oklahoma City as well.

Some noteworthy stops include the Oklahoma City Museum of Art , the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , and the Oklahoma Railway Museum .

14. Little Rock, Arkansas

Distance from dallas: 319 miles, 5 hours.

Little Rock, Arkansas is one of the weekend getaways from Dallas that is like a mini-road trip.

Located almost 5 hours from Dallas, this is one of those getaways that you might want to do on a long weekend.

Once you arrive in Little Rock you will find plenty to keep you entertained.

You can start by touring the Arkansas State Capital building, which is located in Little Rock.

You might be wondering how it is different from Dallas?! Well, trust us, Dallas and Fort Worth are completely different!

The city of Fort Worth is located about an hour west of Dallas.

Here you will find a great cowboy culture, fabulous live entertainment, and a thriving, but laid back nightlife scene.

If you want to immerse yourself in the cowboy culture and cowboy history of the city during your weekend getaways, then you should definitely consider staying in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Stockyards allows you to enjoy all things cowboy.

You can watch the daily cattle drive, take in a rodeo, eat some delicious Texas BBQ, and go two stepping in the World’s Largest Honky Tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas.

There are also some fun Texas themed touristy shops and several bars for you to enjoy in the area.

16. colorado bend state park, texas, distance from dallas: 196 miles, 3.5 hours.

Colorado Bend State Park is another of the weekend getaways that are in the Texas Hill Country.

When people first visit Colorado Bend State Park, they find themselves wondering if they are even still in Texas.

It is not uncommon for people (us included) to say, “I had no idea this was in Texas,” when they first see Colorado Bend State Park.

You are probably wondering why about now.

Well, you see, this is the exact feeling that will be evoked when you embark on the three-mile round-trip hike to Gormon Falls which are located inside Colorado Bend State Park.

Gorman Falls looks like a beautiful waterfall that you would see in the jungles of Coast Rica, not Texas! This 60-70 foot waterfall is truly breathtaking.

Of course, Gormon Falls is not the only reason to visit Colorado Bend State Park. You can enjoy the park’s hiking and biking trails, kayak on the Colorado River, and pitch camp at the many campsites that are available.

This state park is truly a great weekend escape from the city!

17. Caddo Lake, Texas

We mentioned the town of Jefferson above as one of our small town getaways from Dallas.

While Caddo Lake is located in the city of Jefferson, we felt it deserved a category all it’s own.

That’s because an escape to Caddo Lake can be just that, and escape!

Caddo Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Texas in our opinion. It truly looks as if you are living inside of a tranquil painting.

Since Caddo Lake is only about 3 hours from Dallas, we feel it is hands down one of the best weekend trips from Dallas!

You can set up camp at Caddo Lake State Park or check out the cabin rentals that are in the small towns nearby, like Jefferson.

During your weekend visit to Caddo Lake, you have to get out on the water! To do this, you can take a boat tour or rent kayaks.

Take note though, if you choose to set out on your own in kayaks, be careful as you can easily get lost on this lake.

The majesty of Caddo Lake is the beauty of the Spanish moss hanging from the 400+ year old Cypress trees that seem to pop up out of the water.

Caddo Lake is truly one of the most beautiful weekend getaways from Dallas that you can have!

18. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Another one of the fun trips from Dallas is to visit Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs Arkansas.

A weekend away might be just what you need to escape the Dallas heat, and fortunately, you have more than a few attractive destinations nearby.

If you have a couple of days to spare for an adventure, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to drive too long (traffic permitting, of course) from Dallas to reach an interesting new place to explore. Some are still within Texas while others are just across the borders in neighboring states. With so much to see and do, the hardest part of your weekend road trip from Dallas could very well be deciding which of these awesome places to visit.

Whether you want to check out the sights of a bustling new city or you’re longing to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, these are the best weekend road trips from Dallas for your driving pleasure.

1. Caddo Lake State Park

Get back to nature with a weekend away at Caddo Lake State Park . This park in the Piney Woods region of East Texas is known for its picturesque, swampy landscape, and the best way to explore the twisting bayous is by canoe or kayak (bring your bug spray.) While you’re making your way underneath the moss-covered bald cypress trees, remember that gators are here too, so act appropriately according to alligator safety rules .

Other ways you can fill your time include hiking in the forest and fishing the 26,810-acre lake, which houses more than 70 fish species. Speaking of fishing: You don’t need to have a license if you’re fishing from the shore.

Caddo Lake State Park has 46 campsites, some with just water and some that have full hookups for RVs. You can also rent one of their historic cabins, which were converted from army barracks by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

It’s a straight shot south from Dallas to Austin, the capital of Texas. There, it’s all about keeping things weird (seriously: the city’s slogan is “Keep Austin Weird.”) There’s plenty to do for every type of traveler whether you like live music, art, or kayaking.

If you’re interested in historical and cultural highlights, take a tour at the Texas Capitol , visit one of the city’s many museums like the Bullock Texas State History Museum , or check out the LBJ Presidential Library . If you’re here to party, visit the bars along the famous Sixth Street or Rainey Street. If nature is what you’re after, head up Mount Bonnell, go for a hike along the Greenbelt, or rent a stand-up paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake.

Austin also likes to call itself the “Live Music Capital of the World,” so if you have the time, try catching a show at one of the more than 250 live music venues around the city. If you don’t mind the crowds, try to come during the Austin City Limits Festival for the ultimate long music-focused weekend.

3. Oklahoma City

Who says you have to stay within the state for your road trip from Dallas? In a little more than three hours, you can be in Oklahoma City and see what Oklahoma’s capital has going for it.

During your visit, you may consider checking out the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum , which commemorates the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Another worthwhile museum is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , which holds an impressive collection of Western and American Indian art and artifacts.

If the weather is nice, make time to see the Myriad Botanical Gardens . Spanning 17 acres, the garden and urban park has a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, but the one you definitely can’t miss is the 224-foot-long glass tropical conservatory. Another place to enjoy the fresh air is Scissortail Park , a large urban park with pedal boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals on its large lake. Oklahoma City is affordable, fun, and under-the-radar – what’s not to like?

Houston is not only the largest city in Texas by population but by area, too. Given its sprawling nature, it’s good to have an idea of what you want to do and see in advance so you don’t spend too much of your time sitting in the city’s famous traffic.

Museum lovers will be in heaven seeing as there are over 150 museums and cultural institutions across the city. Those who want to see the most popular ones can head to the Museum District , where you’ll find the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Menil Collection, and more.

Another one of Houston’s highlights is Space Center Houston . It’s the official visitor center of NASA and has historic space capsules, a lunar module, rockets, and all-things-out-of-this-world. Kids and adults will love it.

To break up all those indoor attractions, you may also want to see some of Houston’s most beloved urban green spaces. Hermann Park (the Japanese Gardens are especially lovely), Buffalo Bayou Park, and Memorial Park are all nice places to soak up some nature.

5. San Antonio

Keep going on I-35 past Austin and you’ll reach San Antonio, where some of the state’s most popular tourist attractions await (plus lots of delicious tacos.)

If it’s your first time in San Antonio, you can’t miss a trip to the Alamo (the famous 18th-century mission where the phrase (“Remember the Alamo” originated), and the River Walk , a 15-mile walkway along the water with tons of shops, restaurants, and bars. Other gems of the city include the four other Spanish missions that collectively form a National Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’ve already seen the main sights in San Antonio before, you may just spend the whole weekend riding the roller coasters at Six Flags Fiesta Texas . For another amusement park, there’s SeaWorld , which has roller coasters along with marine life experiences and shows. You can also see what’s new at the San Antonio Museum of Art or grab a drink at the historic Pearl District.

Another weekend destination for a road trip from Dallas is Tulsa, in nearby Oklahoma. One must-see here is the Philbrook Museum of Art , located in a historic villa that was once an oil magnate’s home. Anyone traveling with kids must pay a visit to Gathering Place . This massive riverfront park offers a variety of fun attractions, including an adventure playground, skate park, boathouse, sports courts, sky garden, nature trail, and more. Even if you don’t have a child, it’s an awesome place to let your inner kid run wild.

For a night on the town, you’ll want to go to the Blue Dome District , a downtown area popular for its many bars and restaurants. Other top attractions in Tulsa include the Gilcrease Museum , Oklahoma Aquarium , and Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame .

7. Fredericksburg

For a wine-filled weekend getaway, there’s no better place to go in Texas than Fredericksburg. This charming town in the middle of the Hill Country is known for its numerous vineyards and tasting rooms. For anyone who doesn’t feel like plotting out their own itinerary (or doesn’t have a designated driver), you can simply hop on one of the wine tour shuttles or walk between tasting rooms .

While wine is all the rage in Fredericksburg, there’s still quite a lot of non-drinkers to enjoy here. You might not have guessed it, but this town is home to the National Museum of the Pacific War (Chester William Nimitz, the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II, was born here.) There’s also the Pioneer Museum , where you can learn about the German heritage of the city (it was founded by German immigrants in 1846).

Speaking of German heritage, make sure to try some of the German food around town at spots like Old German Bakery and Restaurant, The Auslander, and Otto’s. Fredericksburg is fairly close to both Austin and San Antonio in case you wanted to combine both into one longer road trip from Dallas.

8. Hot Springs National Park

Cross the state border to Arkansas and you can spend your weekend at Hot Springs National Park . Back in the day, this area was a popular spa town as the thermal springs were said to have medicinal properties. Along the appropriately named Bathhouse Row, you can see historic bathhouse buildings built here between 1892 and 1923. At two of these (Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Bathhouse) you can still take a dip.

Aside from the springs, you can hike 26 miles of trails, take your bike along the Pullman Trail, or do some bird watching at the Grand Promenade. If you’re here to camp, you’ll want to head to Gulpa Gorge , the park’s official campground. Each site has full hookups, a picnic table, and a pedestal grill. There are no site reservations allowed, so plan accordingly. If you’d rather stay somewhere a bit more luxurious, book a stay at the Hotel Hale on Bathhouse Row.

With Texas being such a large state, there are so many places within Texas to visit! Whether it’s a quick two hour trip to a new place or a more extensive drive, you can still find yourself exploring the many beautiful places Texas has to offer. From historical landmarks, to beautiful waterfalls, to the best food you can find, to amazing architecture, Texas has it all!

Since Texas is centrally located in the United States, there is a plethora of road trip destinations that are close enough to be driven, but far enough to be out of state. The United States has so much to see, and Dallas is a great jumping off point if you’re looking to drive!

Road trips are a chance to see more of the state or country, catch up on podcasts or an audiobook, and just take life a little slower! Keep reading for the road trip ideas from Dallas!

Dallas to San Antonio

The drive from Dallas to San Antonio is one of the best short road trips from Dallas. At only four hours, it makes the road trip between these two great Texan cities a must!

The Natural Bridge Caverns are about 35 minutes north of San Antonio on Interstate 35. Natural Bridge Caverns  is over two miles of caverns formed one drop of limestone filled water at a time. The first half mile of the caverns is developed for visitors, with the goals of cavern preservation and guest comfort!

About halfway between Dallas and San Antonio is Jacob’s Well Natural Area , 80 acres of wilderness to explore!

Dallas to Austin

One of the most driveable vacations from Dallas is definitely none other than Austin ! Austin has vibe all it’s own. One of the most historic cities in the United States, New Orleans is known for their jazz music on every corner and beautiful 18th century architecture. Chances are you’ve never thought of Wichita as a road trip destination but you should definitely add this cool Kansas town to your list! Some of the nicest people in the midwest call Wichita home. Mingle with the locals each evening at the Keeper of the Flames monument. You’ll see the fire display just across the beautiful pedestrian bridge that crosses the Arkansas River. Wichita has terrific restaurants, breweries, some interesting museums, and a brand new minor league baseball stadium. Wichita is also home to the very first Pizza Hut restaurant. The small brick building is located on the campus of Wichita Statue University and is free to tour!

4. Branson, Missouri

Branson is one of the towns that has a little bit of something for everyone. This southern Missouri entertainment destination once had a reputation for attracting only seniors and retired country music performers. Truth is, there is so much to do for any age group, especially families. See magic or comedy shows, or stroll downtown and shop before watching the synchronized water fountains dance to oldies music. Take a ride on the massive observation wheel overlooking the Branson strip or a ride on the Branson Scenic Railroad. And don’t forget about Silver Dollar City – one of the best theme parks in the country with award winning roller coasters!

5. Bryan / College Station, Texas

There’s always something going on in a college town! Less than three hours from Dallas/Fort Worth – College Station is a fun weekend getaway. Check out the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and do some shopping in downtown Bryan. Visit the Catalina Hatters store and see where cowboy hats are made for famous folks like Willie Nelson. Enjoy a locally sourced meal at one of the many great dining spots around town and grab a photo in front of the Texas flag – made entirely of books! It’s located inside The George Hotel. College Stations makes for a great weekend trip from Dallas.

6. Memphis, Tennesee

Memphis may be best known for Elvis Presley but did you know it’s full of other music history? The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is located where Stax Records once produced the likes of Sam & Dave, Al Green, and Issac Hayes. Aretha Franklin’s childhood home is down the street. There’s the Rock N Soul Museum and of course Beale Street. If you’ve never been to Graceland, or it’s been awhile since you last visited – a brand new complex recently opened across the street, dedicated to all things Elvis. For history lovers, the National Civil Rights Museum is very well done and the giant Bass Pro pyramid is pretty cool! Don’t forget the Memphis barbecue!

7. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs makes our list of great road trips from Dallas as visitors from around the world come to Hot Springs just to bathe in the famous healing waters. Besides a healing bath, enjoy the beauty of Hot Springs National Park, visit the gorgeous Anthony Chapel at Garvan Woodland Gardens or learn about mobsters in the Gangster Museum of America. Arkansas is known as “the natural state” and all of its state parks are outstanding if you’re interested in outdoor activities.

8. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Louisiana’s Capitol city has come a long way in recent years and has proven to be a great road trip destination. Take an elevator all the way to the top of America’s tallest state Capitol Building which overlooks downtown and the Mississippi River. (Be sure to take the guided tour to see the bullet holes that still exist from when their Governor Huey Long was assassinated!) The old state Capitol is also worth touring – it’s gorgeous! Enjoy some great seafood, see the only real live tiger mascot at Louisiana State University, and tour an old plantation home to learn about early Baton Rouge. If you’re a fan of Cane’s Chicken Fingers – it all started in Baton Rouge and the first location is still open!

9. Lubbock, Texas

Considered one of the best “western towns” in America, Lubbock is just under five hours from Dallas/Fort Worth. Visit the world’s largest collection of windmills at the American Windmill Museum or learn about music history at the Buddy Holly Center. Lubbock has no shortage of wineries and craft breweries and a great steak awaits you at Bryan’s Steaks. Be sure to see a movie at the Stars & Stripes Drive-In – ranked as one of the best drive-in theaters in the nation according to The Travel Channel.

10. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa has been working hard to bring their historic city back to life and their efforts are starting to show. Dining options now range from exotic to casual – including one of the best calzones I’ve ever eaten at Bohemian Wood Fire Pizza located downtown. You’ll find plenty of Route 66 history and roadside attractions including The Golden Driller and the Blue Whale of Catoosa – about 15 minutes away. For art lovers, one of the coolest art museums in the south is the Philbrook Museum of Art – housed in the extravagant mansion that once belonged to the founders of Phillip 66. For something a bit unusual, consider a guided tour of Tulsa’s underground tunnel system.

11. Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock has a great mix of history, dining, and outdoor adventure! Arkansas’ largest city is surrounded by beautiful scenery and a short drive from outstanding state parks. In the city limits, Little Rock has become one of the most popular foodie hot spots in the south with new restaurants popping up all the time. Visit America’s only purse museum in the South Main neighborhood, or take a stroll along the riverfront and check out loads of fun statues along the way. See the Clinton Presidential Library, tour the State Capitol, learn about science and the human body at the Museum of Discovery, and then grab some fresh produce at Little Rock’s River Market.

12. Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City is one of the longer road trips on our list but well worth the drive! Spend a day strolling through the world famous Crowne Plaza or try your hand at counting fountains all over town. (Kansas City has the most fountains of any city in America!) Tour the Hallmark Visitors Center – the greeting card company is based there. KC has some really great museums including the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, the Steamboat Arabia Museum, and the Museum of Toys & Miniatures. Make use of the free streetcar that takes visitors from Union Station up to the KC farmers market. Oh and did I mention lots of great barbecue?!

13. Galveston, Texas

Sometimes you just need to be near some water and Galveston is a perfect spot to enjoy some downtime with a view. Check out the Victorian-era buildings downtown or simply soak up the sun at the beach. You can visit one of the city’s unique attractions: The Offshore Drilling Museum, the Galveston Naval Museum, or maybe a enjoy some rides at the historic Pleasure Pier. For lunch or dinner, explore the many Seawall restaurants for award winning food and drinks and something for every taste!

14. San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is always a perfect destination for a road trip and only four hours from DFW. Grab a great meal or drink along the famous River Walk or take a ride up to the top of the Tower of The Americas. Built for the 1968 World’s Fair – the 750 foot high  observation deck  gives a great 360 degree view of town and could be helpful in getting your sense of direction before you set out to explore. Be sure to check out The Saga light show downtown and visit The Pearl – a mixed use entertainment area a short drive from downtown that has shops, food, and outdoor activities like a local farmers market. San Antonio makes a great weekend trip from Dallas.

15. Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Of all the road trips from Dallas, this is the longest one on the list. It’s exactly eight hours from downtown. But, if you’ve never explored Mississippi’s gulf coast, you should add it to your list of road trip ideas. Old Town Bay St. Louis is just east of New Orleans and a good home base to explore the small towns all along the coast up to Biloxi. You’ll find antique stores, diners, art galleries, and yes – the beach! Go out on a boat ride or just relax at one of the local B&B’s in beautiful historic houses. For extra fun – book early and visit during Crusin On The Coast to see hundreds of classic cars line the streets!

16. Carlsbad Caverns National Park – New Mexico

Visit one of the most impressive caves in the U.S. and enjoy a unique weekend getaway. The caverns include over 100 caves and feature gigantic “rooms” covered in rock formations. It’s a chilly 56 degrees all year long – something that sounds good for a summer road trip! There are no hotels in the park however there are plenty of places to stay in nearby Carlsbad or Whites City. Camping is available in the park with a permit.

17. Houston, Texas

If you haven’t been to Houston lately, here’s a refresher on all things you can see and do for a weekend getaway. You can explore the city’s impressive museum district, second only to the Smithsonian in Washington DC. There’s also the Houston Space Center to learn all about NASA and its ties to the region. Houston also has one of the most diverse choices in restaurants in the entire nation. Get around downtown easily with the metro trains and relax in the beautiful 56,000 acre Hermann Park. If you’re into quirky attractions, don’t miss the Beer Can House, a residence covered entirely in beer cans! Houston makes a great weekend trip from Dallas!

18. Roswell, New Mexico

There is also an aviation museum, a local zoo, and some outdoor recreational opportunities. But, let’s be honest – you’re going here because you want to know if humans are really alone in the universe.

New Orleans is near the bottom of our list only because it’s a spot that everyone already enjoys for road trips. Most people enjoy it for drinking and partying – and of course, the food. However, my favorite attraction in New Orleans is the National World War II Museum. It is one of the greatest museums not just in America, but in the entire world. It is truly fantastic. Don’t miss the 4-D film produced by Actor Tom Hanks. The Southern Food & Beverage Museum is another fun stop to learn about cuisine in the south.

20. Waco, Texas

Waco has become a hot spot for a weekend getaway from Dallas in recent years. Largely thanks to the popularity of Chip & JoAnna Gaines who have their mixed use complex based there. But there’s more to explore around Waco than overpriced wash cloths and home decor. Check out the Dr Pepper Museum to learn about America’s first national soft drink which was invented in a Waco pharmacy in the late 1800s. The original bottling plant still stands and houses the museum. You can visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, the Waco Mammoth National Monument, or enjoy a bike ride along the Cottonbelt Trail.

Fort Worth - Texas Motor Speedway

Around 35 Minutes From Dallas

Texas Motor Speedway is currently the fastest track on the NASCAR circuit, with speeds reaching 200 mph. Texas Motor Speedway, nicknamed "The Great American Speedway," contains 144 luxury suites, as well as the Lone Star, a members-only speedway club with a restaurant, gym center, and the Time Warner Cable Broadcast Center.

In addition to an Indy Racing League-IndyCar Series race, the stadium hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series races each year. Adult tickets are $49 and $10 for children’s tickets.

Fort Worth - Stockyards National Historic District

The Stockyards National Historic District is one of Texas's most famous tourist destinations, with historic buildings, restaurants, stores, saloons, and other attractions lining the old brick streets.

At the Fort Worth Herd, you will experience a cattle drive twice a day, see bulls and broncos battle cowboys at the weekly Stockyards Championship Rodeo, or dine on Texan steak at Cattlemen's Steak House. The pathways, roads, and sidewalks are all free to use. Admission is charged, however, to some venues and events.

Fort Worth - Sundance Square

Sundance Square is well-known for its entertainment and nightlife. Throughout the year, the area hosts concerts and festivals, and it features a variety of hotels, restaurants, condos, shops, lofts, museums, bars, clubs, a movie theater, and performing arts. Several Western-style stores sell urban apparel, decorative items, gifts, jewelry, toys, sports equipment, and artwork. Sundance Square is open to the public for free.

Shreveport, Louisiana - Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a celebration right before the season of Lent begins. In the Catholic Church, Lent is a preparatory period before Easter that is somber, reflective, and free from excess. There are multiple days of fasting. Thus, many years ago, Mardi Gras was a time to consume butter, sugar, milk, and meat...all the things that were forgone during Lent. It was also marked by large celebrations and street parties.

Today, the tradition continues in French-influenced Louisiana. Even though Northern Louisiana is much less Catholic than the Southern part of the state, Shreveport still has its share of large parades. The streets are closed. Double-decker floats line up and fill the streets. Visitors and locals alike crowd the curbs and sidewalks to catch beads, candy, and more thrown at them. It's something you have to experience at least once. Mardi Gras happens in February or March (depending upon when Easter falls).

Shreveport, Louisiana - Shreveport Aquarium

The Shreveport Aquarium offers a glimpse of marine life, which will fill you with wonder. Visitors can make their way through tropical lagoons, dark ocean caves, creaking shipwrecks, and coral reefs with bright colors. Guests can get up close and personal with jellyfish, rays, sharks, and many other species of marine life through one of several touch tanks in the aquarium. While here, you can travel the ocean's depths to see strange creatures hiding in the dark of the deepest waters...without ever leaving dry land.

Shreveport, Louisiana - Casinos!

The Bally’s Shreveport Casino & Hotel is truly an experience if you want to try your hand with lady luck while in town. This center aims to provide visitors with a premium gaming environment via a massive gaming space. It has over 50 table games, including poker, blackjack, and roulette.

If you would rather want to try one of the 1,400 slot machines, those are also available. Throughout the casino, the food is abundant, and the entertainment is never lacking. They offer live events, day and night. So stop by and wish that luck will indeed be a lady, tonight! Other nearby casinos include Sam's Town and Horseshoe Bossier City.

Austin - Live Music

Around 3 Hours 15 Minutes From Dallas

The Austin City Limits Music Event is a two-weekend music festival held at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, on two consecutive weekends. The event is produced by Austin-based C3 Presents, which also produces Chicago's Lollapalooza. It is inspired by the KLRU/PBS music series of the same name.

Austin - BBQ Tasting

Several barbecue joints in Austin stand out from the crowd, including Franklin BBQ, Interstellar BBQ, Stiles Switch, Black's Barbecue, and Sam's BBQ. Franklin’s world-renowned brisket with peppery exterior draws Austinites from across the city. If you are aching for barbecue and music, Stubb's Bar-B-Q serves the best brisket and music. This cozy venue once hosted Johnny Cash.

Austin - Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake is a 416-acre reservoir along the Colorado River, named after the wife of President Lyndon Johnson. It is one of Austin’s top recreation areas, with a 10.2-mile boardwalk circling the lake. This loop allows you to cycle around the reservoir. But the lake also has miles of trails along its shoreline, ideal for pedestrians and cyclists. Take kayaking lessons at the Texas Rowing Center on the north shore. Oklahoma City - Six Flags Frontier City & Hurricane Harbor

The Silver Bullet and Diamond Back roller coasters will entice you to test gravity's limits. On a hot day, cool off at Wild West Water Works, the nearby water park that is included in admission. The admission fee for attractions and museums varies, and prices are subject to change; adult admission is $39.99, children's admission is $29.99 (but free for children under the age of 2), and senior admission is $29.99.

Hurricane Harbor Oklahoma City is the perfect place to cool off during the summertime. There are 25 acres of cold pools and super-soaking slides for everyone in the family to enjoy. Bermuda Triangle, Blackbeard's Revenge, and Mega Wedgie are some of the thrilling rides. One-day tickets cost $25 to $65 and you can discover more about Hurricane Harbor Oklahoma.

Oklahoma City - Bricktown

The historically-themed guided tours offered by Bricktown Water Taxi are a fun way to see the heart of downtown Oklahoma City's Bricktown community in an enjoyable and relaxing way. Private charters and dinner cruises are also provided, and the water taxi is wheelchair accessible and convenient for tourists of all ages.

The Water Taxi ticket is $12 for regular admission, $9.00 for children (6-12 years old), $4.00 for children (under the age of 5), and $10.00 for seniors aged 65+, active-duty military (ID required), and people with disabilities.

Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City National Memorial

The Oklahoma City National Memorial houses the Field of Empty Chairs, East Gate of Time, Reflecting Pool, and The Survival Tree, which serve as memorials to victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995.

The Museum charges $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (62 and above), $13 for military (with ID), and $12 for students aged 6 to 17. Children under the age of 5 are admitted free of charge.

Houston - Twilight Epiphany Skyspace

Rice University's Shepherd School of Music is home to one of the most iconic structures in the city: the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace. This edifice was designed by famous artist James Turrell and erected in 2012. Turrell is also popularly known for The Light Inside the tunnel, exhibited at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

The Twilight Epiphany Skyspace is a pyramid structure with built-in LED lighting which is projected to the roof. The facility is open to the general public, and you can catch a display of special lighting and sound at both sunrise and sunset.

Houston - Water Wall

The official name is Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, but Houstonians will know what you're talking about if you just asked around for the Water Wall. Located near the Galleria in the Uptown neighborhood, you can't miss this 64-foot tall waterfall in the middle of an urban park. The semicircular wall has cascading water on both sides. One side faces the park while the other has a plaza. It's a great place for pictures, and all the relaxing falling water drowns out the noise of the city. Best of all, it's free!

Houston - Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston is a scientific museum that serves as the NASA Johnson Space Center's official visitor center in Houston. In 2014, it was designated as a Smithsonian Affiliate institution. At Space Center Houston, there is always something new to see. Touch a Moon Rock, Discover Real Spacecraft, and Explore Historic Space Suits, among other things. Space Center Houston is a premier scientific and space exploration educational facility.

Tulsa - Gathering Place

Tulsa - Gilcrease Museum

Pursuing knowledge and history through art is a great way to understand American culture at its core. That’s exactly what visitors can enjoy when they put the Gilcrease Museum at the top of their must-visit list.

Hot Springs, Arkansas - Bathhouse Row

Superior Bathhouse is now the first brewery operating within a U.S. national park! Prices vary according to location and services.

Hot Springs, Arkansas - Magic Springs Theme & Water Park

One of the top attractions in Hot Springs, Magic Springs houses both a full amusement park and a full water park. Get your thrills on one of the six roller coasters while the kids check out the less intense attractions. Watch a show or grab some great eats.

Need to cool off? Head over to the integrated water park for slides, splash islands, and Crystal Cove Wave Pool.

Hot Springs, Arkansas - Enjoy the Lakes

Hot Springs is also blessed with abundant lakes: Lake Ouachita, Lake Catherine, DeGray Lake, and Lake Hamilton. Taking up roughly 78,000 acres of land, there are plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, or waterskiing enthusiasts. Check with any of the local marinas for ski boat or pontoon rentals. Adventurists can even rent jet skis or take a parasail ride.

For fishing enthusiasts, there are abundant species stocked annually, including bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and walleye—you’ll be sure to catch your limit!

Boating and water sports prices vary according to location. Visitor Fishing licenses cost $6.50.

San Antonio - Tower of the Americas

To fully appreciate the scale of San Antonio, head up to the observation deck in the Tower of the Americas. We recommend booking a ticket for sunset here as it’s the best time of day to view the city from up above.

This 750-foot-tall tower is also home to a revolving restaurant called the Chart House Restaurant. Teens will want to have a go on the 4D Theater Ride, which takes them on an exciting tour of Texas.

San Antonio - River Walk

After a day of exploring some of the area’s best attractions, head to the San Antonio River Walk to finish off the day. We recommend arriving in the late afternoon, and you can follow the river itself on foot.

On the walk, you’ll find there are plenty of amazing spots to stop for something to eat or drink, like the notorious Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant and Margarita Bar, or the infamous Saltgrass Steak House. You could easily spend the whole evening exploring the area. If you need a break from walking, take one of the River Walk boats along the river to continue your exploration.

San Antonio - Alamo

No trip to San Antonio is complete without visiting The Alamo. It's one of the most important historical sites in the country and was home to the Battle of the Alamo back in 1836. Visitors can enjoy walking around the library and museum on the site, where you’ll learn more about the history of the state of Texas.

Even if you think the site looks quite small upon your approach, you’ll be impressed by how much history is hidden within its walls. It gets pretty busy here at the weekend, so try to visit during the week or first thing in the morning for the best experience.

Little Rock - Clinton Presidential Center

Around 4 Hours 45 Minutes From Dallas

Not many states can claim they have a presidential library, especially one run by the National Archives and Records Administration. Former President Clinton decided to locate his library in Little Rock. Visitors can tour the permanent collection that takes you through the history of the Clinton administration and showcases portions of its expansive archive that include over 79,000 artifacts, two million photographs, and eighty million pages of documents. There's even a scale model of the Oval Office you can step into.

Besides the permanent exhibit, the Clinton Presidential Center also hosts traveling exhibitions. These run the gamut from the fine arts to educational programming for children. Plus, the bottom floor has a great restaurant, 42 Bar and Table, which is honestly a hidden gem. Ask many people around town and they won't know that it has a wonderful patio overlooking the river. Admission to the exhibitions is $12 for adults, $7 for youth aged 6-17, and free for children 5 and under.

Little Rock - River Market

The River Market District is the entertainment hub of downtown Little Rock. A stay at a hotel here puts you in the center of the action, as well as a central location for checking off all of the activities we suggest on this list. Ottenheimer Market Hall is one of the distinctive buildings in this area for its tall "River Market" and "Little Rock" signs on the roof. Inside, the large open space houses numerous food stalls. The open-air pavilion behind the hall is the home of the Little Rock Farmers' Market.

President Clinton Avenue is the main thoroughfare through the River Market, and it is lined with restaurants, shops, and even piano bars that stay open later into the evening. Some of our favorite places include Buenos Aires Grill & Cafe, Willy D's, and Flying Saucer.

Little Rock - Central High School Historic Site

When the current building was completed in 1927, it was the largest and most expensive high school in the country. However, Little Rock Central High School took on a more infamous reputation in 1957. That year nine black students (known as the Little Rock Nine) enrolled at Central High. President Eisenhower had to order the Arkansas National Guard to escort the students, who were still subjected to verbal and physical abuse by mobs, into the school.

Today, a welcome center is operated by the National Park Service where visitors can learn more about this important Civil Rights moment and can even tour the school grounds. It may have been a dark time in Little Rock's history, but it's important to remember.

Galveston - Beaches

Galveston is one of the best places in America for birdwatching and outdoor living. In Galveston State Park, you can camp just 1.5 miles from the beach. For avid birdwatchers, you can expect to see spoonbills, egrets, and of course, pelicans.

FeatherFest is a birding and nature photography festival catered to the birdwatching faithful. Galveston is known for its 32 miles of coastline- and there’s always a perfect beach to fit your vibe. While Stewart and Seawall Beach offer unparalleled views of the gulf, East Beach is a different funky vibe altogether and allows alcoholic beverages. Soak up the Vitamin SEA and partake in a sandcastle competition or two.

Galveston - Pleasure Pier

If you’re longing for a Coney Island, Santa Monica, or Chicago Navy Pier experience, look no further than Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. This hot spot features waterfront fun and entertainment like no other Gulf Coast destination. The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier has family-oriented attractions including rides, midway games, a wide selection of food venues, and retail shops.

The pier had its origin as a recreational facility for the US Military during WWII as one of the largest dance floors of its kind. Hurricane Carla swept it away and a new pier was built. Today, rides reach out over the Gulf of Mexico that include coasters, water rides, a carousel, and a wonderous Galaxy Wheel. Multiple shops and dining options like Rainforest Café, Fish Tales, and Saltgrass Steakhouse line the pier for an all-inclusive experience.

Galveston - Schlitterbahn Water Park

Wild water fun is your ticket to happiness, and Schlitterbahn Water Park in Galveston is definitely your jam. From excitement-seeking teens to small kids, there is something for everyone at Schlitterbahn with the largest collection of heart-pounding, fast, tall, and thrilling attractions in the Schlitterbahn family of water parks.

If you prefer rivers, wave pools, and lounging in the sun, Galveston is a great place to visit. You can upgrade your experience to include cabanas, over 6 restaurants, and a swim-up bar for adults. Book early - Schlitterbahn has been known to fill up on the busiest of weekends.

Conway, Arkansas - Downtown

Downtown Conway is the place to be. Oak Street is the main drag, lined with quirky shops and local restaurants. E. Leigh's is a contemporary boutique with cute women's wear and accessories. Rock City Outfitters has more relaxed clothing options for both men and women. You'll find shirts, hats, and more with locally-relevant screenprints and sayings. Buff City Soaps has everything you could need for your face, body, bath, and shower.

Restaurants range from fine dining establishments to lunch sandwich shops. Mike's Place has been a local institution for years. It's the perfect place for a date night or anniversary. Pasta Grill is also a nice choice whose name describes the menu. JJ's Grill and Brick & Forge Taproom focus more on bar and pub food. If it's morning and you're hankering for breakfast, Bob's Grill has been a city morning spot since the 1980s. For something a little different, try Streetside Creperie.

Conway, Arkansas - Antique Shopping

Do you love snagging a good deal on a vintage item? Then Conway is exactly the right place for you to go antique shopping. According to our very unscientific count, it has more antique shops per capita than any other place in Arkansas. For those sticking around downtown, Jenifer's Antiques is right on Oak Street. If you're browsing around lunchtime, stop in at Cross Creek Sandwich Shop for a bite to eat.

The Painted Goat Flea Market and Painted Pug Flea Market are also in the immediate downtown area. North of downtown on Harkrider Street is Blue Ribbon Antiques. For those venturing further out, head east on Highway 64. There you'll find Small Town Shoppes Flea Market and Urban Renewal. Or you could plan your visit around one of the markets that Bella Rustina puts on two to three times a year.

Conway, Arkansas - Petit Jean Day Trip

Petit Jean State Park is only a 45-minute drive from downtown Conway. That makes it the perfect day trip for a free weekend on your calendar. The main draws here are the hiking trails and expansive views over the Arkansas River. The most notable hiking trail is Ceder Falls Trail which winds its way to the picturesque Cedar Falls waterfall. At 95 feet tall, it's one of the tallest in the state. During spring and summer, many hikers don bathing suits and stand underneath the falls to cool down from the 1-mile hike.

Petit Jean is also a popular camping area with accommodations ranging from yurts to cabins to lodges. There are also places to pitch a tent, if you want to go old school, or to park an RV, if glamping is more your style. The Mather Lodge Restaurant also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and features a large eclectic menu.

Northwest Arkansas - Coffee Culture

Around 5 Hours 20 Minutes From Dallas

Get caffeinated with world-class coffee in Northwest Arkansas. This area features some of the best roasters in the country. After all, we all need a cup of joe to help us jump-start the day. In this area, thy cafes take coffee to a whole other level. Arsaga’s, located on the Razorback Regional Greenway, is famous for its medium blend, small-batch roasted varieties.

Onyx Coffee Lab was named Imbibe magazine’s Coffee Bar of the Year! The owners consider themselves a blend of artists and scientists—always tinkering with brewing techniques so they can offer the best experience for their regulars. There are multiple locations throughout Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville. Basecamp Coffee Co. features ethically sourced coffee in a relaxed environment. If you're on a bike adventure, we suggest a grab-and-go breakfast burrito. Others, sit and relax with some heavier fare.

Northwest Arkansas - Crystal Bridges Museum

The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and The Momentary are must-visits in Northwest Arkansas. The museum is a stunning compilation of art, architecture, exhibitions, and nature. Its unique setting overtop two ponds within 120 acres of native Ozark forests places world-class art in a natural context.

Designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the pavilions and glass bridges are remarkable to behold. Inside, the museum's curated collection features five centuries of American artwork. The permanent collection includes greats such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Eakins, and Jackson Pollock. The Momentary, opened in 2020, is a separate contemporary visual and performing art space in downtown Bentonville.

Northwest Arkansas - Call the Hogs!

If sports are your thing, you can hardly go wrong attending any sporting event at the University of Arkansas. Founded in 1871, the university is the home of the Arkansas Razorbacks, a proud member of the SEC. There are 19 teams competing at the highest level of NCAA competition. Therefore, an event is happening nearly every weekend on campus.

Whatever the athletic event, grab your cardinal and white ensemble, and don't forget your plastic hog hat. Cheering for the home team is unavoidable as the famed "Woo Pig Sooie!" chant is quite infectious. You may even hear it spontaneously on the street or in a bar. It's the unofficial anthem of Northwest Arkansas.

Amarillo - Globe-News Center for Performing Arts

Amarillo is a destination known for providing a variety of options for fun to visitors. That said, if you’re an enthusiast of the arts, booking tickets for the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts is a must.

Found at 500 S. Buchanan Street, this performing arts center sits in the heart of downtown Amarillo. It’s home to the Lone Star Ballet and the Amarillo Symphony, just to name a few. A variety of events are hosted here throughout the year spanning ballet, opera, theater, and concerts. Altogether, this performing arts center enjoys three seating levels and undeniably intriguing architectural features. It can easily seat up to 1,300 audience members in the main auditorium.

Amarillo - Cadillac Ranch

If you happen to be an adventurer that brings artistic inspiration with you wherever you go, stopping by Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo will likely be the highlight of your trip. Found at 1-40 Frontage Road, Cadillac Ranch is decidedly more of a public art installation than a ranch at all.

Created by Hudson Marquez, Doug Michels, and Chip Lord, this art installation involves a collection of Cadillacs that have been placed nose-first into the ground. While all of the vehicles have been painted, the idea is to keep the installation evolving with every visit. Guests to Cadillac Ranch are encouraged to bring their own spray paint and put a personal touch on the exhibit before they go.

Amarillo - Route 66 Historic District

Perhaps one of the most iconic stops in all of Amarillo is the Route 66 Historic District. Made up of 13 blocks just west of Amarillo’s city center, this district showcases a collection of beautiful buildings that sit along with one of the most infamous highways in America.

A stroll through the Route 66 Historic District is a chance to admire architecture covering everything from art décor and Spanish Revival to styles that defined the early 20th century. From the Natatorium and Taylor’s Texaco Station to the Adkinson-Baker Tire Company, this district holds onto the past in a way that rivals the future.

Magnolia Market at the Silos is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon and do some Christmas shopping. You can expect tastefully decorated stalls and possibly Christmas-themed workshops here. The perfect winter wonderland!

Craft Gallery is another great place to visit while in Waco, if you are looking for Christmas decorations and décor. The gallery features unique and on-of-a-kind Christmas gifts, great to impress friends and family.

Once you are done exploring, you can treat yourself to delicious kolaches at the Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery in West, Texas, on your way back home. Everybody knows that calories don't count during the holidays!

Why not take a boat tour while here to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective? Holiday Lights River Boat Cruises offers the opportunity to admire the downtown area's beautiful Christmas lights, which is pure joy! If you are lucky, you can also come across Carolin Boats on the river.

Not only the River Walk but many San Antonio attractions such as SeaWorld and San Antonio Zoo also come alive in the holidays. From parades to markets to concerts, make sure to check the events calendar for festive happenings throughout the city.

Once you have had your share of the joyful spirit and the winter activities, you can also explore the historic side of San Antonio. The Alamo is a famous and historic battle site and you can explore its museum and gardens, which are illuminated for the holidays in winter.

We highly recommend visiting the San Antonio Missions, where you can learn more about these UNESCO World Heritage-listed missions. Mission San Jose is over 300 years old and visiting this popular site in winter will mean that you will avoid the crowds.

Did you know? The San Antonio River Walk served as the backdrop for several films and TV shows. The picturesque setting was the scene for a famous comedy scene in Miss Congeniality.

How to get there: To leave Dallas, follow I-35 south until Waco and hop on US-190 to arrive at College Station. From here, TX-6 and then US-290 will take you all the way to Houston.

Our highlights: A must-visit on your way to Houston is Santa's Wonderland. At College Station, Texas, you can visit the 'largest Texas Christmas Experience.' From mid-November onwards, you can visit the snow playground, meet Santa, and watch live entertainment.

If you love festive lights, then your first stop in Houston should be NASA's Space Center. After admiring the Galaxy Lights display, dubbed a "holiday light show that defies gravity", you can explore the rest of the complex and learn about America's role in space exploration.

You will find plenty of decorations outside, but Houston is also home to many indoor attractions are home to festive displays and seasonal exhibits during the colder months.

We recommend visiting Houston's world-class museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Houston Zoo also is know for its cheerful and festive decorations.

Afterwards, warm up with a night of theater in Houston's thriving Theater District. While there's a wealth of performances, you can catch holiday-themed shows during winter.

What can be better than unwinding and enjoying some winter alfresco dining after all that exploration? When you feel peckish, have a winter dining experience at Houston's top restaurants. Many of which offer outdoor seating with cozy fire pits and seasonal decor.

Did you know? Space Center Houston is home to a massive Saturn V rocket. This is the same type of rocket known for launching the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Things to note: It is always a good idea to pack layers when traveling during the colder months. Although winter is mild in Houston, temperatures can still drop at night.

Keep in mind that the Galaxy Light display at the Space Center is at night and runs from 6pm. Also, general admission during day time does not include access to the Galaxy Lights.

7. Dallas to Fredericksburg

8. Dallas to Hot Springs, Arkansas

Why you should visit: Hot Springs, Arkansas, aptly named for its naturally warm thermal springs, becomes a cozy haven when the mercury dips. Imagine swapping the chilly weather for a soothing dip in historic bathhouses, especially when they're most needed during the nippy winter months.

But the hot springs aren't all that's hot about this town. The quaint downtown, with its unique shops and eateries, is framed by the majestic Ouachita Mountains. 9. Dallas to Memphis

6 hours 50 minutes from Dallas (460 miles)

Why you should visit: Should you wish to spend a wintery weekend or a longer trip away from Dallas, Memphis is a great option. Significant Memphis events, King Day and Black History Month, take place in Memphis very close to Christmas, making it a fantastic place to visit during the middle of winter.

You will love the city's many wonderful museums in Memphis. With fairly mild Tennessee winters, you can very well enjoy these attractions during the colder months. There are also amazing restaurants to explore, and you can warm up with a winter ale at the city's many breweries.

How to get there: Follow I-30 from Dallas to drive through Texarkana to Little Rock in Arkansas. From here, switch to I-40 to reach Memphis.

Our highlights: On the way, visit the bustling River Market District in Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas. With many restaurants, bars, museums and shops, this market area is a lovely spot to visit on a wintry day.

Many popular artists have recorded their albums in the music studios of Memphis, including Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley's home Graceland, is one of the most popular attractions in Memphis, and indeed, Christmas at Graceland is a famous attraction, drawing tourists to visit Memphis in the middle of winter.

January the 15th celebrates King Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. On this day, you may explore the museum for free and also attend live music events and speeches outside the museum.

Visit the many breweries in Memphis for a warming beer, amber ale, or live music by the fireside; popular places include High Cotton Brewing Co., Loflin Yard, and Memphis Made Brewing.

Holiday Wonders at Memphis Botanic Garden is a wonderful destination for the whole family, with Christmas lights, decorated trees, hot Chocolate and much more.

Did you know? Memphis didn't have parks until the late 1800s, yet nowadays, it has one of the top urban park systems in the USA.

Things to note: There are major roads you may travel on to get from Dallas to Memphis, so driving conditions are generally good. However, these highways do get congested at times due to high traffic, so be aware while driving.

Graceland in Memphis is open all days of the year, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

10. Dallas to New Orleans

Why you should visit: With mild winters, New Orleans is a lovely winter holiday destination and the generally vibrant and colorful city is full of wonderful holiday spirit, with many of the city's main areas and attractions decorated in colorful lights and Christmas decorations.

The trip is great for a long weekend away from Dallas , or perhaps even a fantastic week-long trip with so much to see and do in New Orleans in winter.

How to get there : Head east on I-20 from Dallas to reach Shreveport. From here, hop onto I-49 towards Lafayette and switch to US-190 past Opelousas and Baton Rouge, from where following I-10 will take you to New Orleans.

Our highlights: December is a festive period in New Orleans, with many concerts and live music events taking place then. Post Modern Jukebox, Algiers Bonfire & Concert by the Mississippi River, and NOLA Christmas Fest are some highlights.

Mardi Gras Day takes place in February or March each year, and the two weeks before the day itself are also filled with parades and festivities in New Orleans. Check out the Mardi Gras website to see what festivities might coincide with your winter road trip.

Oysters are a delicacy in this city, and best enjoyed during the winter months! Many of the restaurants in New Orleans prepare and serve oysters in a variety of ways during the festive season. Some favorite restaurants include Acme, Draco's, and Superior Seafood.

New Orleans City Park is transformed into an amazing light show during Thanksgiving and New Year's, and there is something to admire for the whole family.

You most likely won't need to worry about extreme weather on the roads while planning your road trip; however, the stretch between Baton Rouge and New Orleans does get very busy with traffic at certain times of the day - be vigilant in traffic.

How to get there: Take US-287 and drive through Fort Worth, heading northwest to arrive at Amarillo. From here, take I-40, following the legendary Route 66. Past Santa Rosa, switch to US-285 and head north to Santa Fe and then Taos on NM-68.

Our highlights: Both Santa Fe and Taos have fascinating museums and stunning art galleries that you'll enjoy visiting to take a moment indoors while perhaps exploring the historic district in Santa Fe or Taos Pueblo in Taos on a wintry town walk.

Some highlights are the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the New Mexico History Museum, SITE Santa Fe and Taos Art Museum.

A must during a winter holiday to these locations is a day or a few out skiing. Located at high altitude, this area of New Mexico lends itself to snowy, sunny slopes; good choices for ski resorts are Taos Ski Valley, Ski Apache and Ski Santa Fe.

Did you know? Santa Fe happens to be both the highest (elevation-wise) and oldest state capital city in the US. It was established as early as 1607, and lies at an elevation of 7,198 feet.

Things to note: Although snow is common here in winter, it usually melts off the roads quickly, and in any case the major roads around Santa Fe and Taos are regularly maintained and kept open during the winter months.

It is always good, however, to be vigilant in the winter traffic in case of poor weather and icy conditions.

Should you wish to visit Taos Pueblo, this living Native American Community is open to visitors daily except for a usual 8-week closure in spring due to ceremonial reasons. While visiting, be respectful of the marked areas for tourists and private areas, and ask permission to take photographs.

13. Dallas to Denver and Breckenridge

Via wichita falls.

13 hours 40 minutes from Dallas (880 miles)

Why you should visit: Denver and Breckenridge are both well known for outdoor sports, and in the winter months, they are great bases for going skiing in the Rocky Mountains or doing other winter sports nearby.

During the festive season, Denver is a great place for exploring decorated shopping centers, enjoying theater shows and concerts, ice skating, or going skiing during the day and enjoying a warming après-ski in the evening.

How to get there: The drive from Dallas to Denver will start on US-287, heading northwest through Wichita Falls. Switch to US-87 past Amarillo and to I-25 past Raton. Driving through Raton Pass and then Colorado Springs, you will reach Denver. From here, head west to visit Breckenridge,

Our highlights: The Big Christmas Expo at Wichita Falls on the way from Dallas to Denver is a two-day event in December. It's a great place for doing some Christmas shopping, with the Expo featuring a variety of arts, crafts, and gifts from local and regional vendors.

During the festive season, you can enjoy a colorful light display, animal encounters and nightly entertainment at the Denver Zoo.

We highly recommend visiting Cherry Creek North Winter Wanderland Light Walk between late November and Christmas, for a dazzling display of Christmas lights and traditional season melodies.

Denver also hosts a range of Christmas Markets during the festive season - explore these markets to find gifts, enjoy a warming hot chocolate or a beer, or sample the culinary delights of the wintry Denver.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra's holiday shows are also popular events. Make sure to book a show to enjoy some seasonal musical favorites.

Denver is an amazing destination in winter, even if you aren't traveling during the festive period due to its proximity to some world-famous ski resorts. If you are feeling adventurous, you can hit the slopes in Breckenridge nearby. This world-class ski town is a premier destination in the winter months.

You can also enjoy magical hikes in the nearby Rocky Mountain National Park when the park becomes a winter wonderland.

Did you know? Denver's downtown area is considered amongst one of the most walkable in the nation - do gear up with warm clothes and take a wander through the city's winter markets, galleries, and museums, and you can pop in for a warming beer at the city's many quality craft breweries.

Things to note: Denver does receive snowfall during the winter months, and although the city is well prepared to keep the roads cleaned, it is good to be prepared for winter driving when doing this road trip.

You can enjoy all of Denver's attractions more peacefully during the winter months, for the city sees fewer crowds during this season than in the summer. Hotel rates are generally also lower.

14. Dallas to Miami

Via orlando.

18 hours 55 minutes from Dallas (1,310 miles)

Why you should visit: This sunny winter road trip allows you to experience Miami in our favorite way: less tourists, pleasant temperatures, very little precipitation, and lovely holiday or Christmas traditions and celebrations to enjoy.

It is a longer road trip, so you'll get to experience the pleasant winters of southern Mississippi and Alabama en route as well.

During the winter months, Miami is host to special festivals and events, such as chocolate festivals, art shows, and boat shows, all of which make this southern Florida city a worthy winter holiday destination.

How to get there: This is a mammoth road trip for the ultimate wintery adventure. From Dallas, follow I-20 all the way to Jackson, Mississippi, and then hop onto US-49. Switch to US-98 past Hattiesburg and then I-10 past Mobile.

This interstate will take you all the way to Florida and you will get on I-75 past Lake City. Drive through Orlando and following Florida's Turnpike and then I-95 will take you to Miami.

Our highlights: On your way, discover the enchanting winter festivities in Orlando, where theme parks such as Walk Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando transform into merry wonderlands with seasonal parades and festive shows, providing an unforgettable holiday experience for the whole family.

The Night Garden at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden includes light installations, sculptures, optical illusions, food and drinks, and is a well-loved spectacle where there's something to see and do for the whole family.

Miami is known for its fantastic winter events. Art Basel Miami takes place on Miami Beach every year in December and features stunning works of art by artists from all over the world.

The International Chocolate Festival in January is the most delicious winter event in South Florida. This event features artisan chocolatiers, lectures on chocolate making, a walk through a rainforest to learn about the cocoa plant, and much more.

Miami International Boat Show in February is a popular winter event with lots of fun entertainment, music, seminars on ocean conservation and boat-related seminars and learning events.

One winter spectacle worth seeing while in Miami is George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, performed by the Miami City Ballet. While this ballet might not be on every year, you will find other festive shows in the Miami City Ballet's program to enjoy.

Did you know? Yet another thing Miami is well known and loved for is food! With a strong Cuban influence, Miami's culinary scene is filled with things such as delicious pastelitos, Cuban sandwiches, meat dishes such as arepa and chicharron, and fresh, local seafood.

Things to note: Although a little less crowded in winter than in the summer months, Miami does see tourists all year round, and if you're visiting during the festive season, it is good to book flights and hotels well in advance.

You'll be driving on well-maintained highways for the duration of the road trip, and thus, driving will be smooth. Do be aware of heavier traffic when nearing Miami, though.

If you're hoping to watch the Nutcracker ballet performance, it is a good idea to book tickets in advance.

15. Dallas to Las Vegas

20 hours 20 minutes from Dallas (1,295 miles)

Why you should visit: Las Vegas has much to offer at any time of the year, but visiting during the festive season can be extra special since many of the main attractions, shopping malls, hotels and other venues put on a fabulous holiday flare - despite the lack of snow, the city becomes a true Winter Wonderland.

This winter road trip through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into Nevada will be an epic adventure to remember. You'll have a chance to go skiing in New Mexico or near Flagstaff, Arizona, and will land in Las Vegas, the "Entertainment Capital of the World" with many world-class attractions to explore.

How to get there: Head west on I-30 and then I-20 on this drive from Dallas to Las Vegas. Crossing the border into New Mexico, drive to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso.

Following US-60, you will enter Arizona where you will switch to I-40 to drive sections of the famous Route 66. Head northwest past Kingman to reach your destination in Las Vegas.

Our highlights: Lincoln National Forest is a wonderful stopover location to enjoy winter activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile tours and sledding.

In Las Vegas, many of the popular performances, such as All Motown, Frankly Frank, and Tournament of Kings, are updated for the holiday season to please the audience with Christmas carols, holiday outfits, and festive fun.

Enjoy a spectacular holiday lights adventure at the attraction "Enchant" at the Las Vegas Ball Park.

Another special Christmas tradition in Las Vegas is Glittering Lights, a 2.5-mile course of dazzling light displays that you may enjoy by driving or hopping on the Santa Tram.

For a truly unique experience of the festive season, head over to the Ice Rink at the Cosmopolitan. Take to the ice on your skates and enjoy hot adult beverages, light snowfall throughout the evening, roasting s'mores over the fire pits or watching holiday movies.

Did you know? Las Vegas is home to many skilled and loved cover bands that have become local legends. This means you can enjoy a cover band's performance and get a similar 5-star performance to watching a show by a major celebrity.

The shoulder months January-March are also generally the cheapest and least crowded for visiting Las Vegas.

Distance from Dallas: 258 miles, 4.5-hour drive Oklahoma has a reputation for being that place “ where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain.” That makes it sound like a big ol’ dusty state where the cowboys may know perfect choreography and sing their hearts out, but not much else. Well, we’re here to assure you that if you haven’t visited our neighbors to the north in a while, it’s time to take your Tesla to Tulsa. For a small city, it has immense appeal and real character. The Deco District is home to a large concentration of Art Deco skyscrapers in a small area, while the vibrant Arts District harbors quaint boutique hotels , fab local restaurants and bars , plus numerous festivals and art crawls. Walden Retreats, Johnson City, Texas

Distance from Dallas: 236 miles, 4-hour drive Forget everything you thought you knew about camping in a tent. And we mean everything. With more than 100 places to drink Texas wine and chat with winemakers while listening to live music and snacking on copious amounts of meats and cheeses, you can spend days winery-hopping and not even pop a fraction of the corks at your disposal. In town, make sure to indulge in frozen summer treats (including boozy ones) at Clear River Ice Cream, Bakery & Deli , or if you’re hungry for culinary innovation worthy of any big city, book a table at Hill & Vine or Sage . New Orleans, Louisiana

If you want to go all out, few places exemplify decadent indulgence more than the recently debuted Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans at the very edge of Canal Street, overlooking the Mississippi River. Galveston Island, Texas

Distance from Dallas: 294 miles, 4.5-hour drive Explore 32 miles of coastline, dine at scenic waterfront restaurants, and admire the (sometimes spooky) Victorian architecture . And speaking of old (but fabulous) buildings, book a stay at the “Queen of the Gulf,” the Grand Galvez , which welcomed its first guests back in 1911. Under new ownership, the hotel has been painstakingly restored to its extravagant early 20th-century glory, so you’ll be among the first to stay in one of the beautifully renovated rooms. Distance from Dallas: 275 miles, 4.5-hour drive While Austin draws countless weekend road trippers, it’s worth driving the extra 80 miles south to San Antonio, home to one of the top culinary scenes anywhere in the United States thanks to the Culinary Institute of America and its graduating chefs who stick around to showcase their stuff. Despite what you might have learned in fourth-grade Texas history, the city has so much more to offer than the Alamo and River Walk —though, by all means, you should swing by both. Caddo Lake sports a tranquil yet mysterious vibe courtesy of cypress trees covered in Spanish moss that tower over the photogenic, alligator-welcoming waterways (keep your hands inside your ride at all times, just in case). The historic cabins on the lake, especially the romantic two-person units, make for an ideal way to de-stress. And if you want to get out and explore the area—and perhaps try your luck at the casinos (or get a world-famous Shrimp Buster ) in Shreveport/Bossier City —the Louisiana border is just 30 miles away.

Beavers Bend, Broken Bow, Oklahoma

Distance from Dallas: 181 miles, 3-hour drive The moment you drive into the Ouachita National Forest, you’ll feel worlds away from Dallas. Towering pines provide a dramatic landscape change, offering picture-perfect campsites nearly year-round. Discover a variety of activities at Beavers Bend State Park, located on the shores of crystal-clear Broken Bow Lake (seriously, this is one of the most gorgeous lakes in the region). Highlights include Mount Magazine , the state’s tallest mountain, which looms large over the 1.2-million-acre Ozark National Forest . There are also great places to picnic and scout for wildlife in the considerably smaller 22,600-acre St. Francis National Forest . If you’ve got the need for speed (or really bumpy rides), the stretch offers more than 1,000 miles of designated off-road trails, too.

Marfa, Texas

Distance from Dallas: 520 miles, 7.5-hour drive Home to a whopping 2,000 residents, this far-flung destination has way more going on than any town its size should. The Marfa Lights are one of the world’s most interesting unexplained phenomena, and they’re a heck of a lot closer to Dallas than the Northern Lights . During the day, putt and putter around Texas’ highest golf course , or go for a weightless glider ride high above the Marfa Plateau with only you and the pilot at the helm. Thanks to its popularity among the see-and-be-seen art crowd, the area offers several unique hotels, from the modern Hotel Saint George to El Cosmico , a property dotted with safari tents, vintage trailers, teepees, and yurts. The West Texas destination is similarly stocked with a surprisingly good food scene. 2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2

Covering both the U.S. and Canada, a cross-country trip along U.S. 2 is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the vast diversity and expansiveness of North America. 18. Maine’s “Lobster Trail”: Travel Route 1 Along the Coast

Traveling Route 1, affectionately known as “the lobster trail,” along Maine’s jagged coastline is an exercise in indulgence. Sample lobster dishes in all forms—buttered, steamed, on a roll, or even in a decadent mac-and-cheese.

The trip starts in the quaint small town of Ogunquit , with its rare (for the area) 3.5 miles of white-sand beach. 21. The Florida Keys: An Island-Hopping Getaway

For a sunny road trip itinerary in Florida, skip Miami and head farther south. Beginning in Key Largo and ending in Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is often overlooked for more well-known routes up north, but it is well worth going out of your way to experience.

As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. Some highlights include driving across the impressive Overseas Highway, stopping to admire art in the town of Islamorada, and enjoying the historic sites, food, and (of course) beaches in the city of Key West.

23. Arecibo to Condado, Puerto Rico: A Lesser-Known Side of a Well-Loved Island

In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two .
