Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

These popular thick corn tortillas can be found almost everywhere in Colombia. Baked or fried, with beef, cheese, pork, chicken or beans, they make the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack.

2. Bandeja Paisa

Originating from the Andean region of Colombia, this dish is a staple of most Colombian diets. Consisting of a plate of rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, chorizo and other meats, it’s a filling feast fit for a king!

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

This hearty chicken stew is a Bogota specialty. Packed with succulent chicken meat, corn, potatoes and herbs, it’s a tasty and satisfying budget meal.

4. Tropical fruit

Colombia is known for having some of the best fresh produce in the world. Bananas and plantains are among the best, and you’ll be able to find street vendors selling them fresh, fried and grilled. Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Colombia

1. Jewelry, art and handicrafts

Some of the best artisans in South America live in Colombia. Choose from handcrafted gold jewelry, bright textile bags and scarves, and vibrant contemporary art available in galleries, markets, and boutiques all over the country.

2. Fashion and accessories

Colombia’s more cosmopolitan cities have enough fashion-forward boutiques and malls to keep most clothes-hounds happy. Medellin in particular is well known for being Colombia’s fashion capital and is a true hotspot in the Latin American fashion world.

3. Coffee beans

As one of the world’s largest producers of coffee beans, Colombia is a great place to pick up top-quality beans at lower prices than back home. Buying straight from the coffee regions ensures quality and freshness.

Medellin Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flower)

Feria de Cali (Cali Fair)

The salsa capital of Colombia ends each year the only way it knows how – with a five-day city-wide party beginning right after Christmas featuring parades, music, bullfighting, a beauty pageant, food, and of course, salsa dancing.

Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Black and White Carnival)

Each January, the city of Pasto engages in an unusual two-day celebration of racial equality – locals and visitors party on the street and paint each other black for Blacks’ Day and throw white powder on each other for Whites’ Day.

Night of the Candles

Homes and cities across the country are lit up with candles and paper lanterns to mark the unofficial start of the Christmas season. Taking place on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (a Catholic celebration and national holiday in Colombia), it’s a night meant for socializing with friends and family.

There is always a good time to visit Colombia, as the seasons vary throughout the country. While the climate generally remains constant throughout the year, the temperature can change depending on where you are. In the far north, the climate is usually tropical, warm and humid, while central Colombia can get quite cool - Bogota is known for its mild temperatures, particularly at night.

The wet season is roughly from March to May and September to November, although this varies around the country. December to March is the peak travel period due to the dry conditions and holidays and festivals that proliferate across the country. During this time, expect more sunshine, but also more people competing for space in the cities and tourist regions.

However, this is for general information only and may be subject to change. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

More information about Colombia

A less-traveled treasure, Colombia is quickly emerging as one of South America’s most rewarding travel destinations. With idyllic Caribbean coastlines, cities bursting with characterful, colorful architecture and lush coffee-growing valleys, a trip to Colombia is a safe bet for a memorable adventure. Situated in the north of the continent, just below the isthmus of Central America, Colombia is famed for its diverse cities, such as Cartagena, Medellin and the capital, Bogota, which offer experiences as varied as twilight carriage rides, street art tours or the chance to trace the country’s sparkling heritage at the Museum of Gold.

Not to mention, Colombia does fiestas like no other and is well-known for its lively nightlife. Latin music lovers can experience the immense Barranquilla Carnival, which easily rivals Rio’s, or dig into the culture of Cali, the world capital of salsa. The great outdoors is something Colombia has in abundance. From coastal national parks such as Tayrona to tropical beaches complete with azure waters and coral reefs, not forgetting the soaring peaks of the awe-inspiring Andes, where you can get in touch with some of the most traditional sides of Colombian culture.

Colombia has thousands of parks and natural spaces where you can discover the country’s epic biodiversity. Its greatest reserve, the iconic Amazon , has always been one of the great frontiers for adventurers, who long to travel to Colombia.

History of Colombia

Colombia’s rich and complex history has contributed to its status as the fascinating travel destination that it is today. Originally inhabited by indigenous cultures such as the Quimbaya and the Tayrona, whose mysterious ruins can still be explored today on a tour of Colombia, Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1499 , marking the beginning of extensive colonization in the region. Spain’s ‘New Kingdom of Granada’ was established in Colombia , with Bogota as its capital. Cartagena and Santa Marta were also important Spanish settlements, as can still be seen in their charming colonial architecture.

In the 18th-century , prominent naturalists and scientists made the trip to Colombia to take part in the ‘ Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada’ , which brought to light the rich biodiversity of the region and undertook the important task of classifying the country’s abundant species. The early 19th-century was characterized by a series of struggles for independence from Spain , culminating in the historic rebellion, led by Simón Bolívar in 1819 , when the Spanish were defeated at the Battle of Boyaca. A new nation, comprising modern-day Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador and parts of Brazil and Guyana , was formed, named the Republic of Colombia.

This huge union did not last for long, collapsing in 1830 and giving birth to several new South American nations. Civil war blighted the remainder of the century, although Colombia was famously the first nation in South America to adopt a constitutional government. Communist insurgent campaigns in the 1960s attempted to overthrow the government, but since the early 2000s peace talks have finally brought an end to the 50-year long civil war. A holiday to Colombia is now a safe option and since the country has secured its new-found peace, travelers have been visiting in ever-growing numbers.

Nature in Colombia

Dive, climb, trek or simply kick-back on the beach; Colombia’s natural environment is perfect for outdoor adventures of any kind. One of the world’s most ‘ megadiverse’ countries, it is actually the most biodiverse when it comes to bird species. There are plenty of unique animals and plants to search for in Colombia’s rich natural havens and approximately 10% of the total species in the world can be found within the country’s territory, as well as a large number of rare endemic species. There’s a lot to be excited about on a holiday to Colombia if you’re a nature lover.

With environments ranging from the dense Amazon rainforest to the tropical shores of the Caribbean Coast, you cannot underestimate the diversity of Colombia. The lofty heights of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Santa Marta are a good place to start when exploring the nation’s landscapes. Sat close to the Caribbean coastline, these mountains are home to a thriving bird population, with species ranging from toucans to condors and parakeets, as well as predators such as cougars and jaguars. Several indigenous communities also inhabit the area. One of Colombia’s most famous natural havens is the Tayrona National Park , adored for its untouched beaches and accessible wildlife watching.

Here, you can spot several monkey species, elusive tree-dwelling jaguars and tiny dart frogs, to name only a few of its highlights. It’s the perfect place to combine laid-back beach relaxation with exciting wildlife trekking. One of the quintessential landscapes to experience if you travel to Colombia is the palm-fringed highlands of the Cocora Valley , situated between the Andes. It’s a picture-perfect sea of verdant trees, coffee plantations, and cloud forests. The Cocora Valley is the kind of tropical haven you’ve always dreamt of, not to mention a caffeine-addicts paradise!

Culture in Colombia

Ethnically diverse and eternally vibrant, Colombian culture is a fusion of its many different ethnicities and their unique traditions. Indigenous groups, descendants of Spanish colonists, Afro-Colombians and European migrants have all left an influence on modern-day Colombian culture. Many traditional arts, dances, and music can be traced back to the culture of Spain , whilst elements of the national cuisine, for example, are distinctively Caribbean in flavor, something you’ll notice in coastal cities such as Cartagena . Traditional Roman Catholic teachings lay the groundwork for family life, although the pull of urban life and the city have altered this somewhat. Culture in Colombia differs depending on the region, be it coastal, interior or in the mountains, each region has its distinct traditions and values.

Colombia is an artistic nation; art is actively encouraged and celebrated. In some cities, such as Bogota, graffiti has been decriminalized, making for colorful streets and surprisingly liberal freedom of expression. The capital also leads the way by encouraging healthy living and a green environment with its ‘ car-free Sundays’ , when cyclists and pedestrians take over the city, a weekly event which has become somewhat of a family ritual for the inhabitants of the capital. This Spanish- speaking nation also boasts a particularly hearty and delicious cuisine, so come with a healthy appetite and bulk up on the abundant tropical fruits that are an everyday luxury of traveling to Colombia.

A beautiful country with more than enough natural attractions and hidden corners for every traveler to find their slice of Colombian paradise. Vibrant, forward-looking cities, with an astounding variety of culture, make a tour of Colombia and eye-opening and heart-warming adventure for all travelers.

Colombia offers a wide variety of interesting things to do and beautiful places to see. For history, explore the narrow streets of South America`s original capital in Bogota , check out the old Spanish colonial provincial retreats such as Villa de Leyva , explore the oldest colonial city of Santa Marta and its charming port with bountiful beaches, and walk the walls of Cartagena`s on Colombia`s Caribbean coast. For nightlife, vivacious Cali is today`s capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction over Colombia`s other hot big-city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the wee hours of the night. The chic cosmopolitan city of Barranquilla lies on the banks of the majestic Magdalena River and the hipsters` playground around the El Poblado neighborhood in Medellin downtown.

Colombia`s is situated near the equator which brings a tropical climate with relatively constant climatic conditions throughout the year. However, the climate does differ across the country due to the variation in topography with tropical rainforests, mountains and savanna all found in Colombia. The best time for the country as a whole is between December and March as it rains the least during these months, especially in the Andean regions. This is Colombia`s peak tourist season and prices are at their highest as well. The rainy season hits the Andes between May to July and October to December when heavy rains can fall on a daily basis though they`re usually followed by clear skies and sunshine. Elsewhere, the Caribbean coast experiences its heaviest rainfall in September and October, and is relatively dry for the rest of the year while the lowlands experience little variation with a tropical climate. Temperatures remain fairly constant throughout Colombia for much of the year, which makes it a year-round destination. Changes in temperature and rainfall are determined more by region rather than season and it`s best to pack for all weather conditions.

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Colombia`s generally reliable and numerous buses are your best bet for intercity travel, though increased competition between domestic airlines means that air travel is frequently only slightly more expensive than travel by bus and far faster and more comfortable. Read more about getting around Colombia: By Car: There are several toll motorways throughout the country, though narrower and less well-maintained tracks become more frequent when traveling to smaller destinations. The major international rental car companies have offices and can arrange for vehicle pick-ups at the airport, but driving in cities is not recommended. Most companies require you to be 25 or over; some allow drivers over 21 but they are subject to a surcharge. By Taxi: There are plenty of taxis in the big cities, and they are reasonably cheap. They are also considered fairly safe to hail in the street. You may get charged a bit more for being a tourist; in Bogota, Cali and Medellin they have meters, but in smaller places you have to negotiate the price. Drivers are generally not tipped. By Bike: Cycling is extremely popular in Colombia and hter are all sorts of routes throughout the country, including cross-country missions, several day-long expeditions, mountain bike routes and city cycling. Some hotels and hostels in coastal cities and a few in Bogota lend out or rent bikes to guests. Urban Travel: Bogota`s bus service, TransMilenio, is the most efficient way to travel around the capital. There are also buseta (shared taxis) which are not expensive and stop on demand. Medellin, Colombiea`s second largest city, has a metro train service and cable-car lines to hillside suburbs. Traveling on public transport in Colombia is safer than expected, but you should always use precaution. By Air: There is an excellent internal air network connecting major cities, including those in the Caribbean coastal area. There are also local helicopter flights. Flights between the mainland and the islands of San Andres and Providencia operate from most major Colombian cities. Some areas have no road access, such as the Amazon River border town of Leticia which must be accessed by air. Other areas have road routes but a flight is far more expedient and not too expensive.

US dollars and credit cards are not accepted at most stores or restaurants. ATMs are available in mst cities. The currency used locally is the Colombian Peso. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for Colombian Pesos upon arrival. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Colombia .

Spanish is the most popular language spoken in Colombia, and is spoken by more than 99% of Colombians. However, the Spanish language spoken in Colombia, known as the Colombian Spanish, varies from the traditional Spanish language spoken in Spain and other Spanish-speaking nations. English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-Spanish guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Expert Advice

diana

As you drive through the coffee region, you’ll see coffee plants as far as the eye can see. Colombians are the coffee experts – and for good reason! They are the 3rd largest producers of coffee beans and specialize in Arabica beans. They take these bragging rights very seriously. Each bean is handpicked and sorted to guarantee that the coffee they produce is of the utmost quality. And delivering a delicious, hot cup of coffee is exactly what they do. Drink it like a local and take it with no cream or sugar.

colombia expert advice 2

Amp up the adventure and cruise through Salento valley while standing in the back of a Willy (4x4 jeep). Locals use these jeeps because they handle the uneven mountainous terrain better than the average truck and there’s still a surplus of them left over from WWII. Feel the wind in your hair while you take in rolling hills covered in avocado and wax palm trees.

GUIDE TO TRAVEL IN COLOMBIA

Best times to travel, regions, weather, rainfall, and other useful information

WHERE & W HEN TO TAKE TOURS TO COLOMBIA

As Colombia is situated on the Equator, rather than the temperature varying by season, its climate is related to altitude. The country can, therefore, be split up into three different climates .

The Tierra Caliente is a warm, tropical zone covering approximately 82.5% of the country with the land rising up from sea level to roughly 3,500ft (1,067m). The area between 3,500ft. (1,067m) and 6,500ft. (1,981m) is known as Colombia’s temperate zone and has an average temperature of about 64°F (17°C).

Between 6,500ft. (1,981m) and 10,000ft. (3,048m) is the Tierra Fria with annual temperatures reaching just slightly over 55°F (12°C). With an altitude of 8,525ft (2,598m) above sea level, Bogota is situated within the Tierra Fria and has a yearly average temperature of 57°F (13°C).

The highest levels of precipitation fall on the west coast of Bogota and in the Andes. These areas feature a dry and wet season which alternate every three months. The wettest months to visit Bogota are between April-June and October-December. In the north of Colombia, there is only one wet season which is from May to October.

PASSPORT & VISA

All travelers will need a passport valid for at least 90 days following your departure date from Colombia. However, we strongly recommend traveling with 6 months validity on your passport at all times. VisaHQ can assist U.S. citizens with a full range of expedited passport services, including new passport applications, passport renewal, and any required visas.

Colombia also requires that you have adequate unused pages in your passport, allowing for any necessary stamps upon arrival and departure.

Check with your airline in case you have connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Colombia. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa.

Testimonial Family Travel Argentina

FAMILY TRAVEL

Colombia is one of our favorite family travel destinations in South America. While you may be tempted to only take your family to the stunning Caribbean beaches, the country has much more to offer the family.

The sprawling and lively major cities of Colombia have activities the whole family can enjoy such as Bogota’s Gold Museum, which takes you on a journey to discover the mysteries surrounding the legend of El Dorado.

On the other hand, the villages and Colombian countryside give you and your family the chance to enjoy the great outdoors, from a horseback ride in the Coffee Triangle to wildlife spotting in the paradisiacal Tayrona National Park. The natural diversity of Colombia and its vibrant culture guarantee the whole family has a memorable experience.

Taking one of our many Colombia group tours will ensure the whole family sees the best sides to this incredible country. Our travel experts have led Colombian tours for many years. With this much experience behind our names, we guarantee a unique experience that showcases the country in an authentic way.

CULTURE & LANGUAGE

Colombians are happy and warm people, and you will often receive warm smiles and greetings anywhere you go. The locals are proud of their country, and they will show and tell you they appreciate your visit.

The official language, Spanish, is the most widely spoken in Colombia. However, there are also between 60 and 80 indigenous languages spoken by natives throughout the country. Generally speaking, you can get by with just English, but life is made much easier if you arrive in Colombia knowing a few basic words and phrases.

You will quickly discover the warmth of Colombian people when you make an effort to speak even just a few words in Spanish.

Colombian cuisine

FOOD SCENE & DINING

Colombia’s gastronomic scene may not be as well-known as the scenes of its South American neighbors. But those who travel to Colombia will encounter a mouth-watering array of new and exciting flavors.

Featuring one of the widest ranges of exotic ingredients in the continent and a huge range of traditional and local recipes, it’s time to get your tastebuds fine-tuned to the numerous Colombian delicacies.

Your first step into Colombia will most likely be in Bogotá. If it is you’re in for a culinary treat, as the capital city is currently going through a foodie destination boom. Most of the top chefs in Colombia have started to use the country’s various cultures and regions as inspiration to experiment with their wide range of local ingredients and recipes.

Colombia shares a lot in common with the ingredients found in Peruvian cooking, however, it has the added influences of its world-renowned coffee and vibrant Caribbean culture. Today, the country has an interesting food scene with a number of excellent restaurants in Bogotá, Cartagena, Medellin, and beyond.

VACCINATIONS & HEALTH

While it is not mandatory to have any specific vaccinations in order to enter Colombia, there are a number of vaccinations recommended for those traveling to the country. You should always check with your physician as to your specific health requirements before travel. It is sensible to do so approximately 4-6 weeks before departure as not all vaccines are immediately effective.

Travel to exotic destinations is a good time to ensure that all your routine immunizations are up to date. This includes shots for measles, mumps, rubella, and polio, as well as tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis.

Please note that all travelers should visit the Health Information for Travelers to Colombia section of the Center for Disease Control & Prevention , prior to traveling to the country. We recommend taking out travel insurance with World Nomads, they have Standard & Explorer Plans available.

THINKING SAFETY

This is one of the first questions we receive from prospective travelers interested in traveling to Colombia. Fortunately, over the last decade, Colombia has cleaned up its reputation and is now a safe place to travel to in South America.

In fact, Colombia is now safer on average than all the countries immediately neighboring it. In the poorer neighborhoods of Colombia’s big cities there is still some street crime, but this is no different than anywhere else in the world. If you’re vigilant and use your common sense while exploring the main cities, you should have no issues.

As a foreigner you will stick out, so keep an eye out for your belongings and don’t wear lots of expensive jewelry or show off your newest iPhone or expensive camera and laptop. There are police everywhere in Colombia, especially at major attractions, parks and stations. Please don’t jump to conclusions that it isn’t safe. They are present to avoid issues, not because there are issues.

Our expert travel guides also know the country very well. They will never take you to a place that is unsafe.

Money from Colombia

MONEY & CURRENCY

Colombia’s official currency is the Colombian Peso and the exchange rate as of 2020 is approximately ~ COP$ 3,733 to US$1.00. Unlike most other countries in Latin America, apart from high-end restaurants and hotels the US Dollar is not widely accepted.

If you bring US Dollars with you, then you’ll be able to convert them at your hotel, bureau de changes, and high-street banks. The great thing about Colombia is that you’re never too far from an ATM, even in relatively small towns. Mastercard, Diners Club, American Express, and Visa are all widely accepted in Colombia.

Traveler’s checks aren’t recommended, although they can be exchanged at some banks, few businesses accept them. Tipping in Colombian restaurants is voluntary but they will ask you at the end of your meal if you want it included (10%) or excluded in the bill (which is called propina voluntaria or servicio).

colombia tour packages

ELECTRICITY

Colombia’s electricity runs at 110V so if you’re coming from the US you won’t need to bring your transformer with you. You will need an adapter if any of your electrical appliances and devices do not have a vertical two-prong plug. Even though the country runs with a similar voltage, it’s not exact, but your electrical devices will usually be able to tolerate this slight difference.

It’s mostly safe to plug your electrical apparatus without a voltage adapter. Phone coverage is good throughout most of the country. Check with your phone company if there are roaming agreements before your departure. As for the internet, internet cafés and wireless access are available in most urban areas, airports, and hotels with good connections and speed.

This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Colombia Vacation, Trip & Tour Packages

colombia tour packages

Colombia is situated in the northwest corner of South America , the 4th largest country in the area on the continent of South America and is the only country to border the Caribbean and the Pacific. The name Colombia is derived from Christopher Columbus. There have been times when the country was subject to drug and guerrilla warfare. However, it is now an emerging, increasingly popular tourist destination and to be discovered on Colombia vacationsColombia is a geographically diverse land with terrain ranging from the Andes Mountains to attractive coastlines, rainforests and grasslands.

What are the top cities to visit in Colombia?

Bogota .

The capital, Bogota , is a large city situated at 2640 metres/8600 feet, a contrast of towering skyscrapers and centuries-old plazas. Candelaria is in the centre of Bogota and is a colourful and picturesque colonial district teeming with history amid its cobblestone streets and old houses. Some of the highlights here are La Catedral Primada, the Plaza de Bolivar (the city’s main square) and the interesting Gold Museum. Another highlight is to take the cable car to the top of the Cerro Montserrate, a mountain adjacent to the city with amazing views of Bogota while on Colombia vacation.

Cartagena is a city and resort on the Caribbean Sea and the most visited destination in Colombia. It has an ethnic mix of Spanish, Indigenous and African peoples which adds to its heritage and culture. It is also an old colonial walled city within which the area dates back 500 years with its cobbled alleys, plazas and courtyards. The best beach here is Playa Blanca with its coral reefs and powdery sand. An interesting side trip from Cartagena is to the Rosario Islands National Park where one can enjoy nature.

Villa de Leyva

Villa de Leyva, is a touristic colonial town located in a high-altitude valley of semi-desert terrain and has undergone little development over the last 400 years. As a consequence, it is one of the few towns in Colombia to have preserved much of its original colonial style and architecture. Many artisans have made their homes here. The streets and large central plaza are still paved with cobblestones and many buildings date from the 16th Century. This has resulted in Villa de Leyva becoming one of Colombia's principal tourist attractions and was declared a National Monument in 1954 to preserve its architecture. To the northeast of Villa de Leyva, the land rises to cloud forest and includes the national park of Iguaque.

Best places to visit in Colombia

Tayrona national park .

Tayrona National Park on the Caribbean coast offers some of South America’s loveliest coastline as well as an interesting selection of wildlife and tropical birds.  Located in the country’s north, you will find palm trees, sandy beaches, and turquoise lagoons. The park is a great jumping-off point to reach the islands of Providencia, Santa Catalina, and San Andres. While the islands are covered with coconut plantations and large beaches perfect for sunbathing, their surrounding reefs are the true attraction. The coral reef off Providencia is part of the third-largest reef system in the world and boasts all manner of underwater features, from colourful sea life to the sunken wrecks of privateering vessels and pirate ships. Tayrona is an immensely attractive place and one that is rewarding and exciting to explore.

An interesting place to visit on a Colombia vacation package is again on the Caribbean coast. Known as the “Lost City” or “Cuidad Perdida”, it is an 800-year-old UNESCO-protected archaeological site discovered only in 1972. It is one of the largest pre-Colombian sites in South America and  was discovered in 1972 when a group of local treasure seekers found a series of stone steps rising up the mountainside and followed them to an abandoned city.  When gold figurines and ceramic urns from this city began to appear on the local black market, archaeologists reached the site in 1976. Ciudad Perdida consists of a series of 169 terraces carved into the mountainside, a net of tiled roads and several small circular plazas. The entrance can only be accessed by a climb up some 1,200 stone steps through a dense jungle.

San Agustin

San Agustin Archaeological Park has, as its main attraction, pre-Colombian ceremonial sites of which there are over 500 statues of bizarre stone figures of animals and fictitious creatures. It is near the town of San Agustin in the Andes Mountains of western Colombia home to numerous pre-Columbian remains spread over several sites. Carved volcanic stone figures and tombs litter the Forest of Statues amid native trees and flowers. Nearby, the Lavapatas Spring’s rock bed is scored with ceremonial water channels and reptilian shapes.

colombia tour packages

Of course, without knowing anything about the country before your trip, it is not that easy to decide on what could actually be part of perfect Colombia tour packages. First of all, you need to choose for how long you want to travel around this magical country.

Colombia is huge and destinations might be far located from each other. Furthermore, the Andes mountains don’t make fast travel by land possible. Most visitors travel around for 2 weeks or more.

However, 2 weeks or more will allow you to get a good understanding of Colombia and all its facets. We offer Colombia Vacation packages for 2 weeks or all the way up to 26 days but it is of course perfectly possible to create a shorter or longer itinerary with us.

After you have decided on the length of your trip, it is time to start thinking about the destinations or regions you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Colombia has something to offer for any type of traveler.

Going from white-sand beaches, jungle, mountains, and deserts, to architectural mysteries, colonial cities, and even a pink river. So, what do you want for your vacations?

As you can see, it is not that easy to come up with the ideal Colombia Tour Packages without thinking it through and make deliberate choices.

For this reason, we decided to describe a tour package that we have offered in the past to our customers and give the advantages and reasons why a similar tour package could be your thing for your trip to Colombia!

Are you doubting if Colombia is safe to travel? Read this article first.

colombia tour packages

One of the Recommended Colombia Tour Packages

This highly recommendable itinerary is one of 20 days and focuses on the main and most beautiful tourist attractions in the north and the center of Colombia. This means you will see a gorgeous combination of colonial cities, beach, jungle, and mountains.

In some of these Colombia tour packages we have organized 1 activity a day so you won’t have to worry about not being able to see the absolute highlights of each destination.

The itinerary starts, like most of them, in Colombia’s capital city: Bogota! It is the perfect way to start your trip because it really is the hub to all other destinations in the country.

Furthermore, it is not too big of a culture shock because it is home to amazing international restaurants, comfortable boutique hotels, culture, and some of the best museums. On your day in Bogota, we have arranged the Bogota Bike Tour .

This is one of the best ways to discover most of the city and get a real view and understanding of this metropolis. The tour will bring you among others to a local fruit market where you can taste unique flavors and fruits of Colombia, a coffee factory, and a typical bar where you will play the national sport tejo.

In the afternoon we recommend to visit the Gold Museum and the Botero Museum.

colombia tour packages

Next, you will set a course to the green and mountainous coffee zone where you will spend your days surrounded by exotic flowers and birds in an active coffee finca.

One of the highlights of this region is obviously the coffee plantations where you can take a coffee tour of a couple of hours and learn everything there is to learn about the coffee process, from seed to a fresh cup of coffee, and try out some delicious coffee.

Don´t miss out on the Cocora valley with its endemic ad huge palm trees either. You can make a beautiful walk through the valley and the cloud forest surrounding it. Keep your eyes open because the area is full of butterflies and hummingbirds.

In order to end your days in the coffee zone we suggest visiting some relaxing hot springs, like the ones of Santa Rosa de Cabal that is surrounded by green mountains and has a gorgeous and huge waterfall in the background. For these reasons we recommend and offer a three days stay in this region.

After having discovered the coffee zone it is time to set course to the north of Colombia and let yourself be welcomed by the hot and lively Caribbean coast. We suggest flying to Santa Marta because it is considered the ideal hub for many trips in the surroundings.

True adventure seekers can opt to take the 4 days hike to the Ciudad Perdida. However, it is perfectly possible to discover Santa Marta´s jungle beauty in a less adventurous and hardcore way.

Therefore, we offer a 2 or 3 nights stay in Minca, a little village located in the tropical jungle of the Sierra Nevada at 15 kilometers of Santa Marta. The temperature is pleasant and it is paradise for birdwatchers and travelers interested in finding out more about local culture and ancient indigenous tribes of Colombia.

colombia tour packages

Surely, we do know that you won´t just visit the Caribbean coast to spend your time only in the jungle.

That’s why this itinerary also includes a stay near Tayrona National Park where you can spend a day discovering the park and spend the rest of your time relaxing on the white sand beach dotted with palm trees and with the snowcapped mountains in the background.

After all this nature you will definitely know how to value the colonial beauty of Cartagena! The Pearl of the Caribbean is a 4 hours’ drive away from Santa Marta and has a whole different vibe.

Emerge yourself in the small and colorful streets of the old town and take in some culture and history of the Spaniards on your walks.

We do not forget to pamper you in this tour and include a stay on one of the Rosario islands near Cartagena so you can enjoy your last days at the Caribbean coast to the fullest. If you have twee weeks to travel around Colombia, you could stop your trip here and fly back to your home country from Cartagena.

However, we totally recommend you to go back to Bogota and add Villa de Leyva and a visit to the impressive Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira to your trip. Both places are located relatively close to Colombia’s capital and offer something completely different from the coffee zone and the Caribbean coast.

The salt cathedral is an active salt mine and has the biggest cathedral that can be found underground, 120 meters deep, and everything is, obviously, made out of salt.

Zipaquira is on the way from Bogota to Villa de Leyva so it can easily be combined. Colonial Villa de Leyva is a white village where time seems to have stood still. The whole village is built in the same style and has cobblestone streets.

One of the principal attractions is the main square, which is the biggest colonial square in South America. However, Villa de Leyva is not only interesting for its colonial history.

It is also very famous for the many fossils that have been found in the region because Villa de Leyva used to be a sea. There is a well-made archeological museum that shows the most interesting and biggest fossils that were discovered in the area.

Besides, Villa de Leyva is also home to a couple of tourist attractions where you can learn more about the Muiscas, the indigenous people who used to live in this area before the Spanish occupation.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and this will be the end of one of our Colombia Tour Packages. You will be brought back to Bogota from where you can take your flight back home.

We hope the explanation and description of this tour package will serve as a starting point to help you plan your ideal and personalized trip to Colombia. You can find out more about possible tour packages on our sample itineraries page .

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
