Cruises to St Croix offer some of the most striking scenery you can see on a cruise — on land, on the water, and beneath it. The island also has a fascinating history. St. Croix’s path to becoming a U.S. Virgin Island took it through the hands of France and Denmark. While we’re talking geography, cruises to St. Croix let you explore a variety of it, ranging from the east end’s desert vistas to rainforest and palm trees on the west. Underwater, coral reefs are abundant, making SCUBA diving a great way to see best-hidden local sights during cruises to St Croix. As far as unwinding goes, there’s rum — the good stuff — and plenty of it, with famous brands’ distilleries located right here.
- Explore 40,000 acres of land and sea across Buck Island Reef National Monument.
- See St. George Botanical Garden, with plants from cacti to exotic lush rainforest flora.
- Get the full tour of the Cruzan Rum Distillery to see — and sample — the distillation process.
- Tour the nearby Christiansted, learn about local Danish history and explore Fort Christiansvaern.

Cruz Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
St. John is the least developed and most sparsely populated of the three main islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. That's not surprising, since more than half its land is protected as a U.S. National Park. Most visitors reach St. John by ferry from St. Thomas, landing at the dock in Cruz Bay, St. John's main settlement. A village with only a few thousand residents, Cruz Bay has gained a reputation as an upscale retreat for movie stars and other high-profile people looking for a secluded getaway.
It all started back in 1956, when businessman and conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, who had bought extensive land holdings on St. John, opened the low-key but luxurious Caneel Bay Resort. It's still going strong, and visitors can stop in for lunch and a swim in the beautiful bay. Rockefeller later donated much of his estate to the national park.
Snorkelers should make time for an underwater tour in Trunk Bay, where the National Park Service maintains a submarine snorkeling trail. And no sightseeing drive around the island is complete without a stop to see the fabulous panoramic view from the Bordeaux Mountain Overlook. Back in the town, the boutiques at Mongoose Junction offer one-of-a-kind souvenirs, while Cruz Bay Landing is a perfect spot to grab lunch and drinks.

Virgin Islands National Park at St. John
When you consider Caribbean vacations , chances are visiting a U.S. National Park isn't the first activity you think of –– but that's just what you can do on your next cruise. At Virgin Islands National Park in St. John, you can take a walk through history, hike some of the most breathtaking scenery on the islands, and explore the various salt ponds, mangroves, and coral reefs.
Learn the History of the Park
It wouldn't be a national park without history. Virgin Islands National Park has plenty of it. An archaeology program at Virgin Islands National Park explores the human habitation here, dating back to around 1000 BC. This small island has been the home to African and Caribbean cultures, as well as European colonial leaders, at different times through the centuries. You can learn about everything from the earliest inhabitants to the underground railway and emancipation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You'll also learn about the establishment of the Virgin Islands National Park and the Coral Reef National Monument in more recent years.
Hike through a Diverse Landscape
The Virgin Islands National Park encompasses more than 7,000 acres of beautiful valleys, hills, and beaches. Explore the diverse natural landscape of the park by hiking one the 20 different trails, which range from accessible boardwalks to more rugged options, such as the steep Reef Bay Trail.
Along the trails, you can walk through some of the park's historic ruins. You'll also be able to navigate through salt ponds for bird viewing, or hike your way down from the old sugar mill to the beach.
Explore the Natural Ecosystems
Since more than 40 percent of the Virgin Islands National Park is actually underwater, snorkeling is a popular activity for visitors. The park area consists of seagrass beds, patch reefs, mangrove shorelines, and many other ecosystems for you to explore.
Stop by the visitor center for the most current information on snorkeling. You'll have the opportunity to observe spectacular coral and fish at Salomon Bay, Hawksnest Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Brown Bay, Waterlemon Cay, and Trunk Bay — which even has an underwater snorkeling trail marked with informative signs that offer facts and illustrations.
Get There Easily
It's easy to get to Virgin Islands National Park on the island of St. John. When your cruise ship docks at the pier in St. Thomas , you'll find a ferry that can take you over to the island. It's a short and scenic 30-minute ride.
While on St. Thomas, you can take advantage of an excursion to St. John to experience many of the natural wonders the island has to offer. This trip includes a hike just over a mile through the Virgin Islands National Park, during which you can explore the beaches, plant life, and history.

GET YOUR RUM ON
Cruzam Rum Distillery, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Taste your way through the history of rum on St Croix as you tour the Captain Morgan and Cruzan Rum distilleries, where you’ll learn about the process of making the Caribbean’s favourite spirit.
FORTIFIED FINDS
Canon Fort Frederik, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Check out the hard-to-miss yellow brick Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted for a vivid history lesson – it’s the best preserved Danish-built fort in the Virgin Islands. You can also visit an art gallery and several historical exhibits in Frederiksted’s Fort Frederik.
A BETTER POINT OF VIEW
Point Udall is the easternmost point in the United States. It’s about a half-hour drive from Christiansted, but well worth the journey – once you arrive at the rocky bluff, you can wander up a paved road to the overlook for the best views on the island.
LOCAL CUISINE
St Croix’s culinary scene is as diverse as its landscape. Pop in at any small local eatery and you’ll find fresh seafood dishes, like Cruzan Style Gundy (balls of ground herring and spices), that nod to French, Thai and Dutch cuisine – with plenty of West Indian spice, and favourites like conch fritters. You’ll also find boardwalk bars serving traditional American fare, like hamburgers with rum punch.
There’s no shortage of interesting dive shops in either Christiansted or Frederiksted. But the best places to shop in St Croix are the duty-free shops offering jewellery, spirits, clothing and souvenirs.

American Airlines Is Now Flying to a New Caribbean Destination: Tulum
The US Virgin Islands Cruise Industry Is Booming
If you’re on a cruise to the Caribbean, chances are you’ll be making a stop at one of the ports in the US Virgin Islands, where the cruise industry continues to boom.
Both St Thomas and St Croix experienced 13 percent growth last year compared to the peak numbers of 2019, and the USVI’s trio of major ports welcomed more than 1.6 million passengers last year, across 495 total calls.
That came with 58 percent year-over-year growth compared to 2022, and with continued growth in St Croix in particular, where Royal Caribbean has ramped up its activity .
Early projections show another 5 percent increase in cruise passenger arrivals to the USVI in 2024, according to the USVI Department of Tourism.
“Cruise has been and continues to be a leading entryway for visitors into the territory, and Seatrade allows representatives from the USVI to interface with and share pertinent updates needed to continue fostering positive relationships throughout the industry,” said USVI Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Bosculte during the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach.
Boschulte led talks with major cruise lines during the event, including Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Carnival Corporation to talk about new potential partnerships.

Where can I travel without a passport? Try these 6 destinations.
Securing a passport can be a hassle.
New applicants can expect to spend $130 for a passport book, plus a $35 acceptance fee. Routine wait times are 10 to 13 weeks , and that doesn’t include mailing times, according to the State Department. Paying a $60 fee can expedite the process, but travelers will still need to wait seven to nine weeks for processing.
That means spur-of-the-moment international trips without a passport can be impossible to pull off.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
Luckily, not all destinations require U.S. tourists to carry the document. Here are some popular destinations you can visit without a passport.

Puerto Rico passport requirements
Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory and popular Caribbean destination , is about as easy to fly to as any state if you have a state-issued ID.
The island does not require a passport among U.S. citizens.

US Virgin Islands passport requirements
The U.S. Virgin Islands, another Caribbean destination, allows domestic travelers to enter without a passport.
"If you are a U.S. citizen a passport is not required, but it still serves as the best identification when traveling," the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism's website says. "Otherwise, you must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship when departing the islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and government-issued photo ID."

Northern Mariana Islands passport requirements
Passports are not required to visit the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth made up of 14 islands, including Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
Guam passport requirements
The Guam Visitors Bureau says U.S. citizens are required to show a U.S. passport, but photo ID and proof of citizenship may be accepted "on a case-by-case basis."
Canada passport requirements
Citizens who are members of the NEXUS program , which expedites entry for pre-screened travelers, can present their membership as proof of identification when traveling, according to the Canadian government's website .
Travelers who do not have a passport can apply for a NEXUS card but will be able to use it at land or marine crossings only, not airports .
A NEXUS application processing fee costs $50 for a five-year membership, and children under 18 can apply with no fee. Application processing takes 12 to 14 months, according to the Department of Homeland Security .
Additionally, the State Department says travelers under 16 do not need a passport to enter Canada; they need only proof of U.S. citizenship.

Closed-loop cruise passport requirements
Travelers on closed-loop cruises – sailings that depart and end at the same U.S. port and travel within the Western Hemisphere – do not need a passport, according to Customs and Border Protection.
U.S. citizens can enter the country with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. If under 16, a U.S. citizen can present their birth certificate , certificate of naturalization or consular birth report abroad.
Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises can enter or depart a country on the cruise with proof of citizenship, but some destination countries "may require" a passport.
"In those instances, the cruise lines would require passengers to have a valid passport to board even if it is not a U.S. requirement," the agency's website reads. "You should check with your cruise ship, travel agent, and destination country to confirm the requirements to enter the foreign countries you will visit."
