The Last Journey

The Last Journey review – Solaris-style sci-fi takes on astral body with Earth issues

French parable features a ‘red moon’ that provides Earth with fuel, but our last hope refuses a mission to destroy it

T his ambitious French sci-fi parable has some quiet moments of beauty and poignancy, but otherwise it’s a long slog – and so bombastic, jejune and ill-considered that it feels far more drawn out than the 87 minutes running time would suggest. In writer-director Romain Quirot’s vision of the future, humanity has worked out how to mine an inexhaustible power supply from an astral object that happens to wander by; it is called, unimaginatively, “the red moon”. This heavenly body appears to be like the living, sentient planet in Stanislaw Lem’s novel Solaris (a book adapted twice, by Andrei Tarkovsky and Steven Soderbergh), and our hero Paul WR (Hugo Becker) can somehow sense that the red moon is quite cross with us earthlings for some reason.

That would appear to be why he refuses to fly a mission to destroy the approaching lunar body, even though, in a frankly silly plot move, he is the only person in the world that can possibly do it. Likewise, the script is vague about whether the Earth has become one huge desert that resembles Morocco because of the red moon or just due to the climate meltdown we’re already experiencing. First-time director Quirot is clearly more interested in making points about the dysfunctional family dynamics Paul grew up with: a mum who died when he was young, a distracted science genius dad (Jean Reno, wasted here). There’s also an older brother named Eliott (Paul Hamy) who uses his psychic powers to persuade people to kill themselves.

Instead of the big mission, Paul goes on the run to search for a mysterious forest for no very clear reason. He teams up with a pretty, gamine young woman (Lya Oussadit-Lessert) who he meets at a rest stop where he tries to get a new battery for his electric hover car. These cars, you see, are supposed to float above the ground thanks to the mysterious energy source harvested from the red moon. They look good in the VFX long shots but Quirot never explains why they rock around when they’re driving, just like any old banger with four wheels would. The inattention to detail is what makes this feel like a triumph of style over content, and not in a good way.

Onett is an Interactive Quest Giver past the Bear Gate . He gives out a series of five challenging quests . The rewards for the last quest include a star treat . His quests require the player to complete different tasks, requesting the player to collect 3,673,750,000 Pollen , 136,000,000 Goo , 153,000 Tokens , and to defeat 940 Mobs throughout all of his Star Journey Quests.

Onett with his wreath during Beesmas 2018.

  • He and the Mysterious Figure are the only NPCs of the robloxian-species.
  • He is the only quest giver whose appearance changes during every event.
  • There is a Statue of Onett on top of the 6th Hive (from Left to Right) with the Honey Dipper and the Port-O-Hive as a backpack, while the Onett NPC has a Porcelain Dipper , Porcelain Port-O-Hive , Mondo Belt Bag , Riley Guard , Bucko Guard , Beekeeper's Mask , and Beekeeper's Boots .
  • The requirement was later reduced to 2,500 haste tokens.
  • The total amount of Pollen required to complete his quests is 3,673,750,000 pollen and the total amount of Goo required to complete the quests is 136,000,000 goo.
  • The amount of pollen in Onett's backpack (32318) represents the date when Bee Swarm Simulator was first released (on March 23rd, 2018).
  • Ever since Gummy Bear left, Onett's and Science Bear's quests were the only ones that included collecting goo. However, the 11/25/2018 update introduced Gifted Bucko Bee and Gifted Riley Bee , requiring goo for their "Clean-up," "Goo," and "Medley" quests. During all three of the Beesmas Events , Bee Bear also required goo in certain quests, and during the Egg Hunt 2019 Event, Polar Bear also required collecting goo for his "Egg Hunt: Polar Bear" quest. Spirit Bear also has goo requirements for her quests.
  • He and Panda Bear were the first quest givers to give quests that required defeating Tunnel Bear , with Science Bear being the last.
  • In Onett's backpack, it says that its capacity is the equivalent of 500k. However, considering the items he wears, it should be about at least 900k of total capacity.
  • If counting event quests, he is surpassed by Bubble Bee Man , who gives 4 of them and Stick Bug , who gives only 3.
  • Onett is currently the fourth to last quest giver to be accessed in the game, the third to last being Bubble Bee Man, the second to last being Spirit Bear , and the last being Dapper Bear .
  • During the Beesmas events 2018-2021, Onett wore a wreath around his head.
  • During Beesmas 2022, Onett wore a robot mask and a cog on his belt.
  • During the Beesmas event, once the player finished all of their quests, the player could give him a Present . However, there was a temporary glitch where it wasn't possible to give him one.
  • Onett was also the only NPC who could have been given a present to who was on Bee Bear's "naughty" list.
  • If the player had finished all of his quests during the Beesmas 2019 event, Onett stated that he's been "twisting the lid the wrong way for months."
  • He is one of the two quest givers who did not give an Egg Hunt quest, the other being Honey Bee .
  • During the Egg Hunt 2020 Event, Onett wore the Swarming Egg of The Hive, which given to players when they completed the egg hunt with Sun Bear .
  • When you give Onett a present in Beesmas 2020, the present you gave him includes a collection of Korean skin care products. The detail that states the products are specifically Korean refers to how Korean skin care products are generally very high-quality.
  • Onett the quest giver and the statue are the only NPCs with a bag.
  • During Beesmas 2020, there was a temporary glitch which allowed players to claim the Honeyday Event buff and other stuff from Onett by talking to him (or rejoining the game) multiple times. This glitch was soon fixed after a shutdown.
  • When interacting with Onett while still having the Star Journey 1 quest, the text at the end of the dialogue is a riddle for one of the codes that would give a 7-Pronged Cog , used to craft the Strange Goggles in the Ready Player Two event.

In one woman's mysterious drowning, signs of a national romance scam epidemic

By Jim Axelrod , Sheena Samu , Andy Bast , Matthew Mosk , Sari Aviv

Updated on: April 21, 2024 / 11:19 AM EDT / CBS News

The scammer who drained Laura Kowal of her $1.5 million nest egg and sent the widowed healthcare executive on a path that ended with her death in the Mississippi River, hundreds of miles from her western Illinois home, called himself "Frank Borg."

Frank drew Laura into a relationship after she connected to his profile on the popular dating website Match.com. Over months of giddy cellphone calls and in hundreds of florid emails, Frank manipulated her by drawing on publicly-posted details of her life to forge a bond, then induced her to invest with his online trading firm. As her skepticism grew and love waned, he strong-armed her into helping him dip his hands into the accounts of other victims.

"She had all these buckets full in her life, my mom did," said Kelly Gowe, Laura's daughter. "But there was this one bucket that was missing… and that was companionship. ... And that's ultimately where we're at now, is because of that."

kelly-laura.jpg

This increasingly common pattern — a modern spin that combines emotionally exploitative catfishing schemes with fast-moving investment and crypto scams — has served as the leading edge of an epidemic of pernicious scams targeting users of dating apps and websites. U.S. Justice Department and FBI officials told CBS News there is a public account of the toll: more than 64,000 American victims in 2023. But multiple experts told CBS News that those numbers significantly under-represent the true scope.

"They may be embarrassed that they have been victimized in this way," said Arun Rao, who oversees the Consumer Protection Branch at the U.S. Department of Justice. "They may be ashamed. They may be afraid to tell their friends or family."

With so many cases going unreported, he said, it is a national crisis unfolding largely in secret.

The human cost is likely more severe than law enforcement can quantify. Senior FBI officials told CBS News a striking number of cases are ending with victims dying by suicide.

"They shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed," Rao said. "These are sophisticated fraudsters who are preying on the human desire for affection. For connection with another person. And they are manipulating [victims] … using sophisticated technology."

Dating sites a "hunting ground" for scammers

A year-long CBS News investigation has found a growing number of federal agents, local police and online security experts believe the law enforcement response has, to date, failed to address the problem. The financial toll of known losses has swelled, from $500 million in 2019 to $1.14 billion last year.

Our investigation has found:

  • Local police officials from across the country are deeply frustrated by the lack of options to address the steady flow of complaints they receive, often from the adult children of divorced or widowed victims who have struggled to navigate the unfamiliar world of dating apps.
  • Federal agents struggle to keep pace with scammers who are often operating in plain sight in West Africa and South Asia.
  • Scammers have had increasing success in leveraging the promise of love to strong-arm victims into becoming unwitting co-conspirators, creating a legal mess for investigators who must decide how to treat victims who have openly committed fraud at the behest of the scammers, helping perpetrators launder funds swindled from others.
  • Law enforcement and security experts from dating and social media sites told CBS News those apps have been a "hunting ground" for scammers, and the industry has struggled to effectively curtail the problem. Several former insiders at the publicly-traded company with the largest market share, Match Group , criticized its record for protecting customers. Match Group CEO Bernard Kim defended the company's performance, telling CBS News: "We invest a tremendous amount of capital, incredible talent on trust and safety. It is the first and foremost top priority for us as an organization."

Victim's daughter says her mother "was endangered"

The tragedy of Laura Kowal touches on every one of those alleged weaknesses, unfolding in ways that now sound painfully familiar to the experts who are immersed in finding a solution to the online scam epidemic.

Hundreds of emails between Laura and "Frank" detail a long con, in which Laura is drawn in with promises of love and manipulated into sending more and more money.

Mark Solomon, president of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators , said Frank followed a familiar playbook used by scammers to manipulate their victims.

"We don't blame a person that's on the side of the street and gets robbed with a gun pointed at them," said Solomon, who was the first to tell Kowal's story on the association's podcast, The Protectors , produced by Modified Media . "We can't do that to the victims of these frauds and scams either. These are professionals, they do it every single day. They're good at it."

The only anomaly in Laura's case, Solomon said, are the lingering questions surrounding her death.

evidence-bag.jpg

While several local detectives who investigated the final days and hours of her life appear persuaded that she died by suicide, they have stopped short of that formal finding. Her autopsy report, prepared in the days after her body was discovered in August 2020 floating in the river by a couple out fishing, says only that she died by "drowning."

Those who knew Laura best, however, believe the actions of her final hours are so incongruous with how she lived that she may have met her end at the hands of someone involved in the fraud.

Her daughter, Kelly Gowe, said she believes scammers, including the person using the pseudonym "Frank Borg," drove her mother to a point of feeling "like she was endangered. That she was going to die."

"It's the scammers," she said. "It's the criminals behind those emails. It's Frank Borg… this character. He killed my mom. And everyone that is involved in this scam in any capacity, that's moving the money, that's placing a phone call, that's hitting 'enter' and 'send' on an email — they're all responsible for my mom's death."

An eerie letter that Laura left behind, buried in a file drawer and found while Laura was missing, leaves more questions than answers.

"You were right in your judgment of me," Laura wrote to her daughter. "I've been living a double life this past year. It has left me broke and broken. Yes, it involves Frank, the man I met through online dating. I tried to stop this, many times, but I knew I would end up dead."

The reach of scammers has widened, officials say

Over the course of this week, CBS News will tell Laura Kowal's story. And, through her story, the reports will re-examine a problem many in law enforcement now believe has been grossly underestimated.

The head of the FBI's financial crimes sections, James Barnacle, said the reach of the scams has widened as overseas criminals have gained direct access to their targets: lonely Americans seeking a connection through social media and dating apps.

Match Group, the largest company in the online dating space, has tried to keep pace, telling CBS News it is now swatting down 44 spam profiles per minute. "We're working really, really hard every single day to make sure that people are authentic," Match Group CEO Bernard Kim told CBS News. "That's the key to our platform."

An effort to rally a stronger federal approach has a growing number of advocates — among them, Laura's daughter, Kelly Gowe.

Last year, Gowe left her job with a farm supply company and has dedicated herself to sharing her mother's story as a cautionary tale. At a speech to a women's group in Iowa earlier this year, she urged financial institutions and law enforcement to do more to protect victims.

"It wasn't until I learned that I was going to have a daughter of my own that I knew that, one day, she would know the full story of how her grandmother passed away," Gowe said. "I want her to know that her grandmother's story has the ability to educate people and to promote change, and ultimately her grandmother's story can save someone's life. And that's now the responsibility that I carry, to do that."

Senate Approves Aid for Ukraine and Israel, Sending It to Biden’s Desk

The overwhelming bipartisan vote for the long-stalled $95.3 billion aid package capped a tortured journey for the legislation on Capitol Hill. President Biden is expected to quickly sign it.

Senate Passes $95.3 Billion Aid Package

The bipartisan bill includes $60.8 billion for ukraine; $26.4 billion for israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including gaza; and $8.1 billion for the indo-pacific region..

“On this vote, the yeas are 79. The nays are 18. The motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to H.R. 815 is agreed to.” “Today, the Senate sends a unified message to the entire world. America will always defend democracy in its hour of need. We tell our allies, we will stand with you. We tell our adversaries, don’t mess with us. We tell the world, we will do everything to defend democracy and our way of life.” “For months, our friends have watched to see whether America still had the strength that won the Cold War or the resolve that has underpinned peace and prosperity literally for decades. Our enemies have tested whether the arsenal of democracy is, in fact, built to endure. Well, tonight, the Senate will send a clear message.”

Reporting from the Capitol

The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday night to give final approval to a $95.3 billion package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, sending it to President Biden and ending months of uncertainty about whether the United States would continue to back Kyiv in its fight against Russian aggression.

The vote reflected resounding bipartisan support for the measure, which passed the House on Saturday by lopsided margins after a tortured journey on Capitol Hill, where it was nearly derailed by right-wing resistance. The Senate’s action, on a vote of 79 to 18, provided a victory for the president, who had urged lawmakers to move quickly so he could sign it into law.

And it capped an extraordinary political saga that raised questions about whether the United States would continue to play a leading role in upholding the international order and projecting its values globally.

“Our allies around the world have been watching Congress for the last six months and wondering the same thing: When it matters most, will America summon the strength to come together, overcome the centrifugal pull of partisanship and meet the magnitude of the moment?” Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, said on Tuesday. “Tonight, under the watchful eye of history, the Senate answers this question with a thunderous and resounding ‘yes.’”

In a statement minutes after the vote, Mr. Biden said he would sign the bill into law “and address the American people as soon as it reaches my desk tomorrow so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week.”

“Congress has passed my legislation to strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership: We stand resolutely for democracy and freedom, and against tyranny and oppression,” he said.

The House passed the package on Saturday in four pieces: a measure for each of the three U.S. allies and another meant to sweeten the deal for conservatives that includes a provision that could result in a nationwide ban on TikTok. It sent the legislation to the Senate as a single package that required only one up-or-down vote to pass.

Facing vehement opposition from his right flank to aiding Ukraine, Speaker Mike Johnson structured the legislation that way in the House to capture different coalitions of support without allowing opposition to any one element to defeat the whole thing. The majority of House Republicans opposed the aid for Kyiv.

The components of the bill are nearly identical to one that passed the Senate with bipartisan support in February. It includes $60.8 billion for Ukraine; $26.4 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8.1 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.

In addition to the package of sweeteners, which also includes new rounds of sanctions on Iranian and Russian officials, the House added provisions to direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance. That was a nod to a call by former President Donald J. Trump to make any further aid to Kyiv a loan. But the bill allows the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026.

Nine Republicans who opposed the Senate-passed aid legislation in February supported the bill this time. When Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma changed his vote on Tuesday, this time agreeing to advance the legislation, Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, gave him a thumbs-up on the Senate floor.

“Seventy-five percent of the bill, the total funding, stays within the United States,” Mr. Mullin said on Newsmax, explaining his support for the bill. “That’s what a lot of people don’t realize. This goes to our defense industry; this goes to replenishing our munitions.”

Fifteen hard-right Republican senators who oppose aid to Ukraine voted against the legislation. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who opposed the measure but was one of three Republicans who did not vote on final passage, argued that Congress was “rushing to further bankroll the waging of a war that has zero chance of a positive outcome.”

“Pouring more money into Ukraine’s coffers will only prolong the conflict and lead to more loss of life,” Mr. Tuberville said. “No one at the White House, Pentagon or State Department can articulate what victory looks like in this fight. They couldn’t when we sent the first tranche of aid over two years ago. We should be working with Ukraine and Russia to negotiate an end to this madness.”

Three liberals, Democratic Senators Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Peter Welch of Vermont, as well as Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, also opposed the measure. They said they could not endorse sending more offensive weapons to Israel when the government’s campaign in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of people and created a hunger crisis there.

“We are now in the absurd situation where Israel is using U.S. military assistance to block the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid to Palestinians,” Mr. Sanders said. “If that is not crazy, I don’t know what is. But it is also a clear violation of U.S. law. Given that reality, we should not today even be having this debate. It is illegal to continue current military aid to Israel, let alone send another $9 billion with no strings attached.”

But the vast majority of senators in both parties supported the legislation, and Senate leaders regarded its passage as a triumph, particularly given the opposition to aid for Ukraine that had built up in the House.

For months, Mr. Johnson and right-wing Republicans in the House had refused to entertain aid to Ukraine unless Mr. Biden agreed to stringent measures to curtail immigration on the U.S. border with Mexico. When Senate Democrats agreed this year to legislation that paired the aid with stiffer border enforcement provisions , Mr. Trump denounced it and Republicans rejected it out of hand.

Then the Senate passed its own $95 billion emergency aid legislation for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without any immigration measures, ramping up political pressure on the House to do the same. For weeks, the message to Mr. Johnson from Mr. Schumer and Mr. McConnell had been the same: Pass the Senate bill.

In extensive remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday before the procedural vote, Mr. McConnell cast congressional approval of the aid package as “a test of American resolve, our readiness and our willingness to lead.” He rebuked the naysayers in his party, criticizing those who, he said, would “indulge the fantasy of pulling up a drawbridge.”

“Make no mistake: Delay in providing Ukraine the weapons to defend itself has strained the prospects of defeating Russian aggression,” Mr. McConnell said. “Dithering and hesitation have compounded the challenges we face. Today’s action is overdue, but our work does not end here. Trust in American resolve is not rebuilt overnight. Expanding and restocking the arsenal of democracy doesn’t just happen by magic.”

Ukrainian officials cheered the impending passage of the bill.

Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, posted a photograph on social media of lawmakers holding American flags inside the chamber in Kyiv, in “gratitude to the United States and to every member of the House of Representatives who supported the Ukraine Aid Bill. We look forward to a similar decision from the Senate.”

“The United States has been and remains a strategic partner that stands shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people in our fight against the russian aggressor!” Mr. Stefanchuk added.

The photograph recalled the scene on the floor of the House on Saturday when Democrats waved miniature Ukrainian flags as they voted for the aid bill. They were rebuked by Mr. Johnson and other Republicans, who called it a violation of decorum and said that only American flags should be displayed in the chamber.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Chasiv Yar, a small Ukrainian town, has been under relentless attack by Russian forces. Controlling the town  would put them in striking distance of key Ukrainian operational and supply centers.

The United States secretly shipped a new long-range missile system  to Ukraine, and Ukrainian forces immediately used the weapons to attack a Russian military airfield in Crimea and Russian troops in the country’s southeast.

For residents of Ukraine’s second-largest city, daily Russian attacks have escalated fears  but have not brought life to a standstill. Here’s how a battered city  carries on.

Images From Year Three of the War: For all that time, photographers with The New York Times and other news organizations have chronicled the war , capturing a slice of how soldiers and civilians have experienced it. Some images will never leave them.

Nato’s Show of Force: About 90,000 NATO troops have been training in Europe for the Great Power war that most hope will never come : a clash between Russia and the West with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Resuming U.S. Military Aid: Weapons from the support package, considered “a lifeline” for Ukraine’s military , could be arriving on the battlefield within days . But experts say it could take weeks before there is a direct impact on the war . What would $60 billion buy ?

10 Best Movies For Rock Music Fans, According To Reddit

Screen Rant interviewed legendary musicians Jon Bon Jovi and Tico Torres about their new docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story . Bon Jovi reflected on why this is the perfect time to tell their story and why fans have connected with their songs for so long. Torres discussed the thrill of performing and the greatest achievement of the band.

Why The 40th Anniversary Was The Perfect Time: "You're Only Going To Have A Milestone Like This Once"

Bon Jovi first began their quest to become rock and roll legends in 1983, just over forty years ago. Jon Bon Jovi began tinkering with the idea of telling their story after the band had been together for 38 years and decided that it would be the perfect time to let their fans in on how they became the band that so many know and love today.

Jon Bon Jovi: I knew that the 40th anniversary was coming and you're only going to have a milestone like this once. If you were to wait until the 50th, who knows what might happen over the course of the next 10 years. So at year 38, I started to think about how can we mark this occasion? We began archiving so much that was in the vault and simultaneously considered making this documentary. I did in fact see Man in the Arena, and Gotham Chopra was my first and only meeting that I had with a director. I thought that he understood the concept of sport, which a team and a band are very similar and he also had that spiritual aspect because of his family upbringing. Which I thought he could relate to the innermost workings of what life is in a band. And so we hit it off and I think he delivered on the promise.

Torres reflected on how he has grown over the course of the last forty years and how he manages to still tap into his love for performing for an audience after doing it for over four decades. He also explained how the band has stayed true to who they are and the brotherhood they have always had.

Tico Torres: When you're younger, everything is new. Everything's a challenge, new and exciting. When you do it for a lot of years, the thing that keeps me young is actually playing again, playing live, playing with my guys. It makes me a kid again, it's the fountain of youth at best. And so that doesn't change. The whole secret is to capture that young, fun loving time that we have together, and playing live now and in the studio that comes back. It never goes away. I think a lot of it comes from where we grew up. It's sort of like we're a gang, take on the world. We've always been a bunch of guys that just want one goal, and that's really to kick people's ass. So that was the Jersey etiquette, and we took that from a lot of different bands growing up, and I think we're still there in that kind of attitude.

Bon Jovi's View On Their Story: "All We Ever Wanted To Do Was Tell The Truth"

Being vulnerable isn't new for Jon Bon Jovi as a songwriter he often taps into his personal feelings and experiences to share with the world. However, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story challenged him to be open in a different way by showing the world his process including how difficult it can be. He explained why so many people have connected with their music over the years.

Jon Bon Jovi: I had no problem being open and honest throughout the filming and the making of the film. All we ever wanted to do was tell the truth, and if anyone thinks that doing what we do is easy, this isn't any different than any other day. It's just that you get to see what life is like behind that curtain. It is always hard work to be an athlete, to be a member of a band, to be a member of a family, takes work. And this just captured the work behind the play, if you will. I think that growing up in public, you become a more prolific writer. You're able to capture moments that are happening in and around your life. It's not just creating rhyme schemes that are "Moon, June and Spoon" and writing catchy pop hooks, but when you can get deeply personal, the magic really happens when something is so deeply personal that when you hear it, you think it's about you and you make those characters about you. That's sort of the magic of our songwriting. I've been able to capture a lot of my own personal memories along the way, and people have just related to them.

Jon Bon Jovi also broke down the importance of Bon Jovi staying true to their sound and why they have refused to bend to the whims of different musical fads over the years. Torres teased Jon by saying the band's greatest accomplishment was getting him to really listen and pay attention to the lyrics of the new album, which Jon agreed was a major accomplishment for him as well.

Jon Bon Jovi: I think that's the integral part of your sentence right there, is that remaining true to who and what we are. Don't chase fads nor fashions because you're always going to be late. And by remaining true to who we are, and we go on this journey. Now, granted people who were on the train with us for Runaway in 1984 may have gotten off along the way. Others got on the train at that juncture, you see? So this train keeps rolling and people are allowed to get on it and get off of it. By remaining true to what we are, the people that listen can count on it. They can count on Bon Jovi to only tell them their truth. We're not trying to be a K-pop band because that's popular two years ago. Those kinds of things would be career mistakes, and we never made those mistakes. Tico Torres: The fact that we're still here and still doing it. Like John says, it's a road. It's a lot of ups and downs. It's a family and the fact that we can still do great songs. A quick little story. I'm not much of a lyricist or listen to lyrics, but when John wrote this record and we put it together and we started listening back and I had to call 'em and tell 'em, man, the lyrics are great because they got through to me. It took 40 years where I'm actually going, okay, I'm listening to the lyrics. So yeah, I think that's a milestone for me.

Disney World’s Most Controversial Rides Transformed Into Inclusive Experiences

Disney World Attractions Needing Changes_feature image

What happens to a Disney attraction gone bad?

Nothing is new about the need to replace or alter a problematic Disney experience. Over the last five decades, several beloved attractions and rides at Disney World near Orlando, Florida, have undergone massive overhauls. It’s not just the Disney Florida attractions, though. Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and other Disney Parks worldwide must make necessary revisions a time or two.

A serene morning at a magical theme park, featuring a statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse, with a majestic castle standing tall in the backdrop amidst a clear blue sky.

From removing controversial content or potentially insensitive material to mitigating possible dangers or health risks, there are many reasons behind all those once-thriving, now-closed Disney attractions. Here at Inside the Magic, we’re looking back at some of these former attractions and sharing the stories behind what went wrong with each one.

ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter

Signage warning Guests about ExtraTERRORestrial

Centering around a menacing alien terrorizing the audience, this theater-based attraction opened in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park in 1995.

It would be a gross understatement to say that it deviated from the usual family-friendly Park offerings. It was almost the antithesis of what Disney hoped to aspire. It sent young showgoers screaming and crying, which wasn’t fun for parents either. That’s why Disney started posting cautionary advisories at the attraction’s entrance, hoping to dissuade those guests who could not handle the content.

By 2003, the attraction closed for good, only to be replaced by the lackluster Stitch’s Great Escape!, which has also since closed. The Stitch retheme wasn’t much of an improvement, but at least it didn’t terrify small children like its predecessor did.

Mission: SPACE

Exterior of Mission: SPACE

If you’ve ever ridden the Orange Team version of Mission: SPACE, you know how intense it is. When the attraction opened in 2003, there was no Green Team alternative. That came later as a solution for the potential health risk factors that have since been attributed to the ride.

Within its first three years alone, 12 people were hospitalized following their rides on Mission: SPACE. There were even two reported deaths in individuals who had preexisting health conditions. Later, Disney learned that a grand total of 194 people had been treated for sickness by the paramedics. Some even passed out, suffered breathing difficulties, or reported chest pains or irregular heartbeats.

That led Disney to establish the more docile Green Team variation and place sick bags and cautionary advisories in the Orange Team section.

The Making of Me Film

Martin Short alongside graphic segment from 'Making of Me' film

This not-so-family-friendly, somewhat uncomfortable film about conception was shown in EPCOT’s now-defunct Wonders of Life Pavilion between 1989 and 2007. Directed by Glenn Gordon Caron, the film starred Martin Short as its main protagonist and narrator as he recounted how his parents fell in love, got married, and then…made him. And yes, the film does show implicative, albeit not-too-graphic, onscreen actions.

Pair those scenes with the animated segments detailing fertilization and fetal development, and you can clearly understand why this isn’t the sort of thing you’d want to watch alongside your family on Disney World visit. There were also potential concerns regarding the controversy surrounding the abortion issue. That’s why Disney eventually posted content advisory signage near the theater entrance.

Although it’s surprising, to say the least, that it lasted as long as it did.

Journey Into Imagination

Figment and Dreamfinder from the original Journey Into Imagination

Here is the perfect example of a bad Disney attraction replacement that had to be walked back, at least partially. When Journey Into Imagination premiered at EPCOT in 1983, it featured an adorable purple dragon known as “Figment” and his likable redheaded “Dreamfinder” pal. The original storyline centered around Dreamfinder creating Figment from inspiring ideas and materials and then leading him (and his guests) to explore Dreamport.

It was an attraction that delighted folks for many years until Disney made the controversial decision to update it. The redo titled “Journey into YOUR Imagination” opened in 1999 and featured a whole new storyline revolving around Dr. Nigel Channing (portrayed by actor Eric Idle) and a tour of the Imagination Institute. Figment and Dreamfinder were no longer a part of the magic, which had longtime fans outraged.

Hoping to restore fan interest by returning the Figment character, Disney again shuttered the attraction for another refurbishment in 2001. Then, in 2002, the new version we still enjoy today opened as Journey Into Imagination with Figment. While the former retheme with Dr. Nigel was still included, so was Figment. Yet Dreamfinder has yet to return to the scene.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Baby Elephant in Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction

As far as Disney’s Animal Kingdom rides go, Kilimanjaro Safaris remains a forever-popular must-do endeavor. It’s also easily one of the best rides at Disney World overall. But that may not have been the case had Disney followed their original working storyline.

The conceptualized plot was initially far more gruesome and centered around an elephant that had been poached. It would have even included a graphic replica of the elephant’s bloody carcass with missing tusks. It was eventually decided that this theme and the accompanying content would have been far too traumatizing. So, the story was significantly reworked into one that still included poachers in the area needing to be stopped. Yet it did not feature any graphic representations of the death.

In 2007, the story shifted to focus on a baby elephant wandering about the Park. The poacher subplot was significantly mitigated. By 2012, there were no longer any poacher references at all. The bumpiness and the intensity of the rugged terrain have also been significantly leveled out over the years. Now, Kilimanjaro Safaris is a relaxing sightseeing expedition.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Side-by-side comparisons of the old and new auction scenes

Since the 2003 film franchise of the same name premiered, we’ve seen many updates and alterations to the original Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland and Disney World. Most tie into the movies and are generally accepted by fans. But in 2018, there was a controversial reworking of a longstanding classic scene.

We’re referring to that now-infamous auction that has since been deemed sexist. It is the one with women being auctioned off for marriage and particular attention being paid to the redhead. The redhead has since received a makeover and appears as the much more empowered female pirate, Redd.

Splash Mountain Transformation

Folks enjoying the now-defunct Splash Mountain

The Splash Mountain closure at Disneyland and Disney World in May 2023 is perhaps the most publicized controversial change in recent years.

In favor of removing longtime racial associations with the contentious Song of the South film of 1949, Disney decided to retheme the site for its existing water-based attraction with one inspired by the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog —Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

So, when will the Tiana ride open at Disney World? The opening dates for the new Tiana ride at Disney World and Disneyland are both set for the summer of 2024.

‘Young Sheldon’: Raegaen Revord Reflects on Her Journey as Missy Cooper in New Set Images

"This show has changed my life."

The Big Picture

  • Emotional goodbyes as Young Sheldon wraps filming on its final season after captivating audiences for seven years.
  • Raegan Revord fondly reminisces on her time playing Missy, expressing gratitude for the cast, crew, and producers.
  • While Missy won't be part of the spinoff, Georgie and Mandy will continue the Cooper family legacy in a new show.

Six more episodes and it is curtains for Young Sheldon . After seven seasons and over 100 episodes, we say goodbye to the Coopers of Medford, Texas. The fan-favorite comedy series has wrapped filming on its final season recently, and the emotional goodbyes have begun to roll in . The show premiered in September 2017 as a prequel to the iconic show, The Big Bang Theory , and focused on the childhood of Sheldon Cooper. This meant a very young cast would take the lead, as Iain Armitage , only eight at the time took on the role of Sheldon. Raegan Revord, who plays Sheldon's twin sister, Missy , came aboard the show aged nine. Now, aged 16 and seven years down the line, the young actress looks back on what has been a thrilling ride with a bittersweet ending.

The Coopers of East Texas have become a family we have all come to love over the years onscreen. While the show could very easily have continued, the already established timeline from the flagship series means CBS have to conclude at this stage . Taking to her Instagram account , Revord shares a series of images looking back at her seven-year stint playing Missy on Young Sheldon . The photos included some old images from very early on in the show and more recent photos as the show comes to an end.

Attached is a caption from Revord emphasizing how much she has grown in the time period, and how grateful she is for the experience. The caption reads: " They say it takes a village to raise a child and I think I’ve had the most incredible village thanks to our cast, guest cast, crew, and producers . Thank you for making this a fun, safe, and loving place for a kid to grow up. This character, these people, and this show has changed my life ever. Thank you for the most amazing childhood and memories. (and thank you for loving me during my baby shark phase)."

Will Missy Return?

While Young Sheldon might be coming to an end, there is already a beaten pathway for the return of some members of the Cooper family with the announcement of the Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) spinoff . The show is set to feature how Georgie and Mandy handle the pressures of raising a family while chasing their separate careers . While Missy is arguably the best character of Young Sheldon in earlier seasons, there has been a shift in recent years with the build up of her older brother, Georgie. Currently, Missy will not be a part of the upcoming spinoff , as the actress revealed she has not been invited to partake in the project.

The final episode of Young Sheldon airs on May 16. Past seasons are streaming now on Paramount+ in the U.S. See the images above.

Young Sheldon

This television series is a prequel to a popular sitcom, focusing on the childhood of a gifted young boy in East Texas. Navigating school and family life with a unique intellect far beyond his years, it humorously explores his early endeavors to be understood by his conventional family and classmates.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

How brands can pursue circularity when building sustainable products.

Adam Taubenfligel is an author & cofounder, creative director and responsibility lead at denim brand Triarchy .

Many of the synthetic materials used in stretch jeans today are derived from petroleum . When these garments are put through the wash, they shed microplastics , which can pollute waterways and end up in the environment.

Because my company avoids working with plastic-based materials, we began exploring ways to develop denim without plastic. We found rubber to be a viable alternative, and, in partnership with our denim mill, we developed a plastic-free denim material in 2022. This not only changed our manufacturing process but also paved the way for further innovations beyond our industry altogether.

I believe true impact lies in circularity. Within the realm of fashion, "circularity" embodies acknowledging the complete lifecycle of a garment. It entails foreseeing the garment's fate at its journey's end and responsibly orchestrating its deterioration. Under the right conditions, our material can biodegrade in less than two years and contribute to soil health as it does. With circularity as a goal, the team of players began wondering: Could this material serve as a compost to help cultivate the growth of plants? Our denim mill partner supplied the material to a regenerative farm in Italy, and they found that the denim benefitted water retention and the health of the soil, and that farm then grew tomatoes using the denim as compost.

I share this experience because it taught me that when minds are aligned on finding a better way forward, what is once only dreamed of can become reality. Compost and the cultivation of plants wasn't initially part of the agenda, yet it underscores a crucial lesson: If like-minded individuals converge with a shared commitment to improvement, unexpected treasures may surface. When companies are driven by a common purpose, they can find remarkable outcomes.

There is power in having a collective vision and dedication to sustainable progress. As brands forge ahead in their own sustainability journeys, they need to remain steadfast in their pursuit of innovation, guided by the conviction that doing things better is not just an aspiration but an imperative. This can help them shape a future where sustainability and ingenuity intersect to create lasting positive change.

Doing this is easier said than done, however. Here are some of the most valuable lessons I learned about pursuing circularity when developing sustainable products.

1. Collaborate with like-minded organizations.

Partnering with other organizations can greatly accelerate progress toward circularity. Look for partners that share your values and goals and also bring complementary strengths and resources to the table. Consider factors such as their expertise, market reach and commitment to sustainability.

2. Embrace innovation and creativity.

To uncover innovative use cases for products with circularity in mind, encourage a culture of experimentation and creativity within your company. Foster cross-functional collaboration and brainstorming sessions to explore new ideas and approaches. Don't be afraid to think outside the box and challenge conventional thinking.

3. Design for circularity from the start.

Incorporate circular design principles into product development processes from the outset. This includes designing products for durability, reparability and recyclability, as well as considering alternative materials and production methods that minimize environmental impact.

4. Educate and engage stakeholders.

Effective communication and stakeholder engagement is crucial for driving the adoption of circular practices both internally and externally. Provide training and resources to employees to help them understand the importance of circularity and their role in achieving it. Similarly, engage sales partners, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to build support and momentum for your circular initiatives.

5. Measure and track progress.

Establish clear metrics and targets to measure the impact of your circularity efforts via a third-party auditor. Regularly monitor and evaluate performance against these metrics, and use the insights gained to continuously improve your strategies and approaches. Be transparent and prioritize accountability throughout this process. In doing so, you can build trust and credibility with stakeholders.

Final Thoughts

The journey toward circularity demands a multifaceted approach anchored in collaboration, innovation and accountability. By embracing partnerships with like-minded organizations, organizations can leverage collective strengths to propel progress forward. Through a culture of innovation and creativity, they can uncover novel solutions that challenge conventional boundaries. Designing for circularity from inception ensures products are not just sustainable but also resilient, repairable and recyclable. Education and engagement of stakeholders foster a shared commitment to circular practices and drive internal and external alignment. Finally, meticulous measurement and tracking of progress uphold transparency and accountability to ensure continuous improvement.

By following these lessons and recommendations, leaders can successfully navigate the journey toward circularity in their companies, drive positive environmental and social impact and unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth they never knew were possible.

Jennifer Aniston producing 9 to 5 remake with Oscar-winning Juno writer

Diablo Cody will write the script for Aniston's reimagining of the Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin classic.

the last journey 5

Jennifer Aniston has found a new way to make a living by producing a remake of the Jane Fonda , Dolly Parton , and Lily Tomlin movie classic 9 to 5 .

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the Morning Show and Friends star's Echo Films production company will partner with 20th Century Studios for the upcoming reimagining of the 1980 film, which followed a trio of working women who band together to get revenge on their sexist boss (played by Dabney Coleman ).

The InSneider was first to report the news, also revealing that Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody is working on a draft of the 9 to 5 remake script.

Following its initial release in 1980, 9 to 5 became a commercial and critical hit, and its feminist themes cemented it as a pop culture staple for decades to come. The film grossed $104 million at the box office at the time, and spawned both a Rita Moreno -starring sitcom that ran for five seasons throughout the 1980s as well as a 2009 Broadway musical based on the story.

Aniston's Echo Films has produced several high-profile projects across the last decade, including her Adam Sandler sequel Murder Mystery 2, Dumplin', and 2014's Cake , perhaps Aniston's most critically lauded performance to date that led to Best Actress nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Critics Choice Awards that year.

A release date and casting details for Aniston's 9 to 5 remake have yet to be announced.
