For a variety of reasons, some travelers are interested in cruising within the U.S. rather than hitting overseas ports. One reader asked simply:

“Except for Hawaii, I can’t seem to find any cruises that stay entirely within the U.S. Why is that?”

The short answer to the “why” part is easy: “Because some longstanding laws, designed to protect U.S. shipbuilding and cruising, had the unintended (but entirely expectable) consequence of virtually destroying them.” Specifically, any ship cruising only between U.S. ports must employ an almost totally U.S. crew. Hence the foreign registries (and foreign labor laws) applying to virtually all the big cuise ships. Until recently, U.S. laws also required use of U.S.-built ships, but some cruiselines have apparently been given a pass on that part. Still, these chauvinistic requirements have discouraged the mass-market lines from all-U.S. cruisers.

For whatever reason, if you want to cruise entirely within the U.S., you have only a few options. However, several cruiselines offer mainly-U.S. itineraries, stopping in a foreign country to satisfy the law.

Big-Ship Cruises

As far as I can tell, only one big-ship company, Norwegian Cruise Line , operates cruises entirely within the U.S. One ship—the Pride of America —cruises entirely within the Hawaiian Islands, with a crew that complies with U.S. citizenship requirements. Unfortunately, the several other U.S.-based companies that previously operated in this area have gone out of business.

Several big-ship cruise lines offer mainly-Hawaii cruises that get around the citizenship requirement by stopping in Ensenada or Vancouver/Victoria on trips between the Islands and the mainland, or detouring to Micronesia (about 1200 miles south of Hawaii) on cruises that don’t reach the mainland. You’ll find quite a few options with these itineraries. And most of the stops on the typical Alaska Inside Passage cruise itineraries are at U.S. ports—with, of course, the obligatory Canadian stops in Prince Rupert or Vancouver.

Over the last few years, New England-Canada cruises have become quite popular for the big-ship lines. Typical itineraries include some combination of New York, Boston, Portland, Halifax, Charlottetown, Quebec, and Montreal. And big-ship lines also now offer a few itineraries up and down the West Coast that call at some combination of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria. Any good cruise agency will have full particulars on these trips.

The Great Lakes

Given the size and diversity of the U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes system, I find it surprising that so few cruiselines cater to this region. Ships must be necessarily smaller than today’s mass-market megaships in order to transit two systems of tight locks—the Soo Canals between Superior and Michigan and the Welland Canal bypassing Niagara Falls—but in the recent past ships as large as 400 passengers have cruised these inland shores. For now, however, I found only two small-ship cruises currently operating, both stopping in Canada as well as the U.S.:

  • Travel Dynamics International runs a several-month program of Great Lakes cruises between Toronto and Duluth in the 110-passenger Celia II .
  • Peral Seas Cruises will operate one Toronto-Chicago round-trip next summer in its 210-passenger Pearl Seas Mist flagship.

A few years ago, Hapag-Lloyd operated several summer-season Great Lakes cruises in its luxury 410-passenger Columbus. This year, however, Columbus operated in other areas, and no Great Lakes itinerary is planned for 2010.

Rivers, Canals, and Waterways

A few operators run cruises on U.S. rivers, canals, and inland waterways. Because these trips involve so many waterways, the ships are typical river ships: shallow draft, only two or three decks to allow transit under bridges, and such.

  • American Canadian Caribbean Line , for now, appears to be the biggest player in this market. It operates a variety of river and lake cruises in North America in two 100-passenger riverboat-type ships: Grand Caribe and Grand Mariner . Main cruising areas include Chesapeake Bay, the Erie Canal, the New England Islands, and the St Lawrence, Hudson, and Sauguenay Rivers, plus seasonal positioning cruises through the Intracoastal Waterway between Rhode Island and Florida. The 84-passenger Niagara Prince operates several river-cruise links between Chicago and New Orleans on the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Illinois Rivers, plus some of the same destinations as the other ships.
  • CruiseWest will operate a full 2010 summer season of cruises on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest in the 96-passenger Spirit of ’98 and the 84-passenger Spirit of Discovery .

Sadly, as far as I can tell, the old-time (or fake old-time) riverboat liners Delta Queen, American Queen, and Mississippi Queen do not operate this year. In fact, Majestic America Line —parent of Delta Queen and American West Steamboat companies—is dormant and trying to find a buyer. Given today’s financial climate, I wouldn’t expect anything for 2010, either.

I suppose you might count the longer Alaska Ferry trips as “cruises,” in that the full-length trips last as long as some conventional cruises and the big ferries offer overnight cabin accommodations. However, the experience is completely different from a conventional cruise: no fancy meals, no variety of shipboard activities, and port stops too short (and often at odd hours) for any real touring. Moreover, if you buy cabin accommodations and onboard meals, ferry trips aren’t even less expensive than low-end cabins on big cruiseships.

Arranging the Deal

You can book all of the big-ship cruises through the “usual suspects” cruise agencies. Typically, the best rates are for last-minute options.

The big online sites, however, don’t cover small-ship cruises as well as they might. Consider going directly to the cruiselines or through specialist agencies such as Small Ship Cruises and Great Lakes Cruise Company . Wherever you buy, however, you can expect to pay a lot more, per day, than the “from” price for a megaship cruise on one of the mass-market lines.

Could close-to-home U.S. cruises satisfy that out-to-sea itch? An ever-growing group of voyagers emphatically say yes. The memories of the challenges European cruisers faced last year surely contribute to U.S. cruises’ popularity boost. Besides, it’s so much easier (and far less costly) to find ports to drive to, or only require a short flight. Most American cruises possess the added allure of international flair, visiting the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada . Nearby waters deliver breathtaking natural beauty, adventurous shore excursions, and ship vibes that range from nonstop high-energy to pampering luxury. Here, several upcoming voyages sailing from American ports that rival any cruise in far-flung locales.

Booking tips for U.S. cruises

Where can you cruise in the united states.

American-flagged carriers like UnCruise Adventures offer Alaska, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii cruises. American Cruise Lines counts the coastal Southeast, Alaska, Puget Sound, and New England among its itineraries. NLC America, a Norwegian Cruise Lines division, features the American-flagged  Pride of America sailing the Hawaiian islands. Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic cruise line possesses four American-flagged ships that cruise Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Are there any cruises that stay in the United States?

Only American-flagged cruise lines can sail solely in the United States. Most popular cruise companies sailing multiple ships are foreign-flagged and must abide by laws requiring at least one foreign port stop. That’s why so many close-to-home cruises include Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico. American-flagged cruise lines that can sail solely in U.S. waters include American Cruise Lines, UnCruise Adventures, and Lindblad Expeditions.

What is the most popular cruise line in America?

Families love Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International for an abundance of amenities befitting multi-generations. Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruises are extremely popular for U.S. cruises , too.

How much does a cruise cost in the United States?

Prices vary widely depending upon the ship category. Contemporary lines are the most economical, premium fall in the middle, and luxury cruises are the priciest. You can find weeklong cruises that cost under $100 per person per day—talk about a deal.

The 7 best U.S. cruises 2023

Celebrity cruises: an inaugural voyage through the eastern caribbean.

The fourth ship in this line’s game-changing Edge series, the 3,260-passenger  Celebrity Ascent  makes its inaugural eight-day sail round trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023. This sunshine-blanketed itinerary promises four charming Caribbean ports including Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and three blissful sea days. You’ll want those onboard days to never end, with the ship providing so much outdoor space to soak up the balmy Caribbean sun and soft ocean breezes. A buzzy casino and 32 eateries, bars, and lounges are big-time lures, too. Shore excursions—chilling on powdery white sand beaches, snorkeling turquoise waters teeming with colorful coral and tropical fish, and sipping champagne on catamaran sunset sails—are mesmerizing.

Departs December 3, 2023; fares begin at $1,299 per person.

Cunard: Independence Day celebration on an iconic ship

What better way to cruise in the U.S. than to celebrate July 4 th in Boston, sailing 2,691-passenger Cunard flagship  Queen Mary 2 round trip New York? How fitting to walk the historic Freedom Trail and tour the Boston Tea Party ship on this holiday. The eight-day voyage also includes stops in Newport, Rhode Island (be sure to ogle those Gilded Age mansions), and Halifax, Canada, where passengers can stroll breathtaking public gardens and take an emotional moment to behold the single Titanic deck chair at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.  Queen Mary 2 , widely hailed for its transatlantic crossings, is a wonderful ship to call home. On board, elegance prevails, with a formal evening dress code reflecting Cunard’s sense of occasion. Afternoon tea, a humongous library, ballroom dancing, and a planetarium are among numerous onboard activities keeping passengers engaged. If in the budget, book a Princess Grill Suite; less costly than the Queens Grill, it’s still awash in extra amenities (such as an exclusive private restaurant) and especially attentive service.

Departs June 30, 2023; fares begin at $799 per person.

Holland America Line: 10-day voyage through the Mexican Riviera and Sea of Cortez

Revel in the Mexican Riviera’s splendor visiting ports like Loreto and Mazatlán when sailing round trip from San Diego on 2,650-passenger  Koningsdam . Dive, snorkel, jet ski, or kayak in pristine warm waters, gaze at UNESCO World Heritage Site cave paintings from pre-colonial indigenous peoples, or wander museums devoted to whales or archeology. Other port activities include ziplining, golfing, and sampling agave-based spirits. Onboard the ship, there are blues and rock-and-roll clubs that come alive at nightfall. Count on varied dining choices: New York-style pizzas, oysters on the half-shell, or juicy prime steaks, anyone?

Departs November 25, 2023; fares begin at $849 per person.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Explore Belize, Mexico, and Honduras

Some of the most popular ports for American cruises are in Florida. How simple to sail round trip from Miami for seven days on the 3,804-passenger  Norwegian Joy  and kick up the adrenaline in three Central American countries: Mexico, Honduras, and Belize. In Roatán, Honduras, embark on an eco-adventure, interacting with capuchin monkeys and sloths, and bouncing on an all-terrain buggy through an impossibly lush jungle. Costa Maya, Mexico, lures ocean-lovers with snorkeling in the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world, teeming with marine life. Or, maybe your passion lies in exploring Tulum’s Mayan ruins. Parasail or zipline in Harvest Caye, Belize—Norwegian’s 75-acre resort-style island in southern Belize. Onboard the recently remodeled ship, indulge in 15 dining venues including specialty restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and three main dining rooms, party at nightclubs, try driving a race car on a two-level track or seek Lady Luck at the casino, revel in Broadway and Vegas-style shows. Feeling brave? Swirl down a double-loop waterslide over the ship’s side. For an exclusive ultra-chill retreat post-activities, book accommodations in the Haven, with its own restaurant, pool, and butler service.

Multiple departures from March to April and October to December 2023; fares begin at $829 per person.

Royal Princess Leaving Southampton 9th June 2013

Royal Princess ' sailing along the California coast is one of the best U.S. cruises.

Princess Cruises: Seven-day classic California coast

Celebrate spring in California sailing round trip from San Francisco, with ports like Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico. The cruise unfolds on 3,560-passenger  Royal Princess , a most pleasing ship with a tranquil adults-only Sanctuary, and some compelling family lures such as high-caliber Broadway-style entertainment, the piazza-like Atrium, glass-floored SeaWalk, and a light and water show. In Santa Barbara, a notable curated outing promises a delicious meal at a leading local restaurant and a visit to a family-owned farm and “ground to glass” winery. Live it up at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, or admire the stunning art collection and striking modern architecture at Getty Center museum. The San Diego Zoo is a must, as is desert ziplining in Baja—although driving an ATV through Guadalupe Valley’s wine country is pretty darn cool, too.

Silversea: Nome, Alaska, to Vancouver

Among U.S. cruises , an Alaska itinerary is a must-do. Go far beyond the typical Alaskan ports in this adrenaline-charged expedition onboard 274-passenger  Silver Wind . The ice-class ultra-luxury all-suite vessel spends 18 days exploring authentic Alaska with an impassioned expedition team including biologists and geologists. This cruise is majorly inclusive; all passengers receive complimentary dining and alcohol, tuxedo-clad butler service, shore excursions, and expedition gear. Primo sustainable caviar and its accouterments are complimentary, anytime, anywhere, onboard, too. Venture ashore with seasoned guides to hike the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge on St. Matthew Island, a bird-lover’s paradise of guillemots, auklets, and tufted puffins, and note the Shinto shrine left behind in the Aleutian Islands’ Kiska Harbor by occupying Japanese soldiers during World War II. More Aleutian explorations lead to jaw-droppers like pristine glaciers, fossilized forests, hot springs, and waterfalls, and wildlife sightings such as bald eagles, orcas, and blue foxes.

Viking: Canada and the Atlantic coastline

Spring and autumn are primetime for 16-day U.S. cruises between Fort Lauderdale and Toronto, Canada on 378-passenger expedition ship  Viking Octantis. This voyage features many inclusions, such as an enthusiastic expedition team, one complimentary landing or shore excursion in each port, and outings by kayak, rubberized small boats, and Special Operation Boats (12-seaters that leave the ship via a protected marina and can convert from open seating to enclosed cabin). As on other Viking ocean liners, 24-hour room service, king beds, spacious baths with heated bathroom floors, complimentary wine and beer with meals, and specialty restaurant dining also rank high among included amenities. Ashore, you’ll find a mix of fascinating cities (like Quebec City and New York City) and spectacular scenery. Bike about Toronto, hike Canada’s La Mauricie National Park, kayak or bird-watch in Charleston. And who knew there were more than 300 resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the inlets, creeks and marsh flats around Charleston? Chances are, sightings will enchant on a guided tour.

Departs April 13, September 15, and September 26, 2023; fares begin at $10,395 per person.

The 11 Best Cruises In And Around The U.S.

cruise within the us

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Taking a cruise is an excellent way to explore the country and world without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. The U.S. offers a variety of cruises, both on the ocean and river, that cater to different interests, ranging from exploring the wonders of Alaska to savoring the Pacific wine country.

With so many options, finding a cruise that fits your itinerary and budget is easy. In this post, I will share the 11 best cruises in and around the U.S. for seeing the wonders of our country and having an unforgettable vacation. Here they are, in no apparent order.

Shopping street in Bangor, Maine

1. New England/Canada

Holland America offers several New England and Canada cruise options, including a 10-day getaway from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale or a 6-to-8-day journey from Boston to the culturally rich Montreal or Quebec City. The latter option includes stops in Bar Harbor, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and back.

If you prefer a more extended cruise with more days at sea, Holland America has a 10-day itinerary from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale with stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, and Portland instead of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Highlights Of New England/Canada

These Holland America cruises are ideal for those seeking fall foliage, sandy beaches, fresh seafood, the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, the Anne of Green Gables house and farm, and the East’s most famous attraction — Acadia National Park. I found the 8-mile Confederation Bridge on Prince Edward Island truly fascinating. It stands over the Northumberland Strait and costs $50.25 to cross.

Fun Fact: Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge in the world over icy waters .

Alcatraz Island

2. California Coastal And Wine Country

Princess Cruises offers several itineraries, with my favorites being California Coastal or the Pacific Wine Country and Coastal, with stops in San Francisco and Santa Barbara , ending in Vancouver, Canada. The 7-day itinerary, which currently runs less than $500 for an inside cabin, is particularly popular. It has been named “Best Cruises from the West Coast” by Cruise Critic.

The California Coastal departs Los Angeles and stops in San Francisco; Astoria , Oregon; and Seattle, and ends in Vancouver. Princess Cruises offers a variety of onboard amenities, such as culinary experiences, the best afternoon tea at sea, and Broadway-style entertainment.

FYI: I’ve been on 54 cruises and this is one of the two I couldn’t get into a port due to the weather. In this case, it was Santa Barbara and because of the fog. Don’t be discouraged when these things happen; the cruise line’s #1 priority is keeping you safe, so you have to roll with the punches.

Glacier National Park

Carnival Cruises takes you on a 10- or 11-day journey to wondrous Alaska, departing from Seattle or San Francisco. Expect breathtaking views of natural wonders such as glaciers, fjords, and Alaska wildlife, namely bears, moose, and whales.

This Alaska itinerary boasts stops in Juneau and Ketchikan where you can explore charming towns and embark on exciting excursions. Carnival Cruises emphasizes fun and entertainment and is one of the many cruise lines that sail to Alaska .

4. American Rivers (Multiple)

Viking River Cruises offers an exciting journey from Minnesota’s Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico along the Mighty Mississippi River. Three options for the American rivers that I found intriguing were Heart of the Delta (New Orleans to Memphis ), America’s Heartland (St. Louis to St. Paul), and America’s Great River (St. Paul to New Orleans). The journeys take you through iconic landmarks and scenic spots, including the St. Louis Arch, Mark Twain’s boyhood home, and Civil War battlefields.

Viking River Cruises is ideal for those interested in history, culture, and scenic landscapes, with onboard activities such as lectures, workshops, and demonstrations. All guided tours are included.

5. Columbia And Snake Rivers

The Columbia and Snake Rivers cruise with American Queen Voyages is a must-do for anyone interested in American history. This cruise follows the path that Lewis and Clark once charted through dense forests, rocky shorelines, and rich wine country.

Departing from Richland, Washington, or Portland, Oregon, this cruise is a bit pricey but well worth the investment for its educational enrichment and natural beauty. Learn about the Native American history of the area, take in breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge , and indulge in delicious regional cuisine.

Graceland living room

6. Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Immerse yourself in the charm of small-town America and the Great Smoky Mountains on a cruise down the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers with American Queen Voyages. With all guided tours, Wi-Fi, beverages (including alcohol), and a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay included, this trip offers the ultimate vacation.

Learn how to get a National Parks senior pass before you go.

Highlights Of The Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Expect moonshine, Civil War historical sites, country music, Nashville traditions, and the birthplace of the blues — Memphis. While in Memphis, visiting the one and only home of Elvis Presley at Graceland is a must! I’m most intrigued by seeing Paducah, also known as Quilt City and a UNESCO World Heritage Creative City .

Presidential car at the Henry Ford Museum

7. Great Lakes

A third cruising option with American Queen Voyages uncovers the grandeur and natural beauty of the Great Lakes (which meet eight states and the Canadian province of Ontario), from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Watch the mesmerizing cascade of Niagara Falls, take a horse-drawn carriage through Mackinac Island, and soak in the fragrant pine forests of the Georgian Bay.

With carefully selected destinations and daily educational enrichment, this cruise offers a remarkable way to discover America’s northernmost wonders.

Highlights Of The Great Lakes

Having been to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, this is truly one of the treats on this itinerary. Other highlights include:

  • Chicago’s photogenic architecture
  • Magnificent Mile shopping
  • Milwaukee’s craft beer scene
  • The Henry Ford Museum
  • Traveling through the locks system

8. National Parks And Legendary Rivers

For adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts, the National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise with American Cruise Lines is a natural fit. This 15-day, 14-night cruise on land and sea takes you through some of America’s most iconic national parks: Glacier, Grand Teton , and Yellowstone . Included are guided excursions with an adventure guide, three daily meals, and breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge and Snake River, all while enjoying comfortable accommodations and hotels.

This cruise is perfect for those seeking an educational experience or mature adults seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. This might be my future dream cruise itinerary.

Riverboat in Natchez, Mississippi

9. Mississippi River

A list of the best cruises in the U.S. would only be complete with mentioning a classic Mississippi River cruise. This iconic American river flows through a stunning variety of landscapes, from rich forests to revered southern cities and towns. Enjoy live music, thrilling riverboat casinos, and impeccable southern cuisine on a cruise with American Queen Steamboat Company while taking in the beauty and history of the Mississippi River.

Potential city port visits among these Mississippi River cruise options include Natchez, Mississippi; Cincinnati; Madison, Indiana; Hannibal, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; Baton Rouge; and Memphis.

10. San Juan Islands And Puget Sound

A rare and delicious cruise itinerary I found while researching this post is yet another with American Cruise Lines . Have you ever considered cruising in Washington? I know I hadn’t. This enchanting 8-day cruise takes you through the San Juan Islands, with abundant wildlife and natural scenery, to the Puget Sound and Butchart Gardens in Victoria, Canada.

11. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is another unique cruise with American Cruise Lines that will allow you to witness breathtaking vistas. A few ports of call on this itinerary, or the Olympic National Park one, are lesser-known towns like Port Townsend and Anacortes.

10 Amazing Ways to See the U.S. by Cruise Ship

Hannah Lott-Schwartz is an award-winning lifestyle journalist and editor. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including National Geographic Traveler , Fortune , Hemispheres , Time , Delta Sky , and Robb Report, in addition to Travel + Leisure .

The right cruise can put joy back into the journey, making everything from departure to the final destination and return trip part of the actual vacation. Maximize relaxation time by keeping close to home — because you don’t have to go far to find wonder in this world. “Domestic cruising is brilliant,” says Lisa Niver, a Virtuoso travel advisor and cruising expert who spent seven years working on cruise ships. “For a while, travelers felt they had to fly far away to see something interesting or exciting, and now they’re realizing how much the United States and nearby has to offer.” One major benefit: Because you won’t have to deal with jetlag for the most part, you won’t spend part of your vacation in recovery mode. In some cases, you can even drive to your departure port. “Everything is just easy ,” Niver says. “You get on the ship, you unpack once, and you go to many destinations.” Ready to say “Bon voyage!” and let someone else do the sailing? Here are 10 amazing excursions that touch all corners of the United States.

See the leaves change from New York to Quebec

A highlight reel of the Northeast, Crystal Cruises ’ Fall Foliage Sojourn departs from New York City during peak leaf-changing season and follows those warm autumnal hues through nautical New England and into Canada. Along the way, you can get lost in Newport, Rhode Island’s historic district; find the Freedom Trail in Boston Commons, America’s oldest public park; and salivate over Bar Harbor, Maine’s legendary lobster rolls. A lighthouse-dotted coast along Prince Edward Island keeps the cozy vibes alive before a little slice of Europe brings you back to earth in Quebec. (From $2,699 per person for eight days.)

Set your watch to Hawaiian Islands time

Once you make it to Hawaii, island hopping is a must. There’s Pearl Harbor on Oahu, Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island, the twisty Road to Hana on Maui — and there’s no need to book flights between them. Norwegian offers year-round roundtrip departures from Honolulu that hit all of the above plus rainforest-covered Kauai. And they come with big booking bonuses, like free airfare and shore excursion credits. No wonder it’s an award-winning trip. (From $1,449 per person for seven days.)

Discover wine regions of the Pacific

Booze cruising gets the grown-up treatment on the West Coast, where Princess Cruises’ Pacific Wine Country itineraries whisk wine enthusiasts from one wine region to another. In Santa Barbara, venture into the Funk Zone, a trendy downtown neighborhood packed with tasting rooms, galleries, and chef-driven restaurants, where you can drink in the Santa Ynez Valley. But make sure to save room in your suitcase: In Vancouver, you’ll have access to British Columbia’s top-rated wines, many of which aren’t available outside the province. (From $689 per person for six or seven days with departures from Los Angeles or Vancouver.)

Time travel with Lewis and Clark

For a fresh way to see the Pacific Northwest, take a note from history and go back in time 215 years to when explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark first set eyes on the region during their now-famed expedition. Launching from Portland, the Columbia and Snake Rivers Voyage travels through the Columbia River Gorge to the Idaho border, where adrenaline junkies can jet boat down rapids into Hells Canyon. Because every National Geographic–Lindblad departure comes with its own expedition team of industry pros, you’ll get insider info along the way on everything from culture and wildlife to photography tips for perfecting your shot. (From $4,990 per person for seven days.)

Sail under the Northern Lights in Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The world exists differently in Alaska, particularly at sea where it’s somehow more pure, more primal. The Northern Lights hang overhead while the Queen Elizabeth , your Cunard ship, pulls through a sea maze of fjords and glaciers to Victoria, Anchorage, Kodiak, and beyond. The journey comes to life with grizzly sightings and stories detailing First Nations heritage. (From $2,659 per person for 17 days.)

Leave New York behind for golfing greens and pink-sand beaches

A golfer’s dream, the Bermuda and the Old South departure from Azamara Club Cruises gives passengers plenty of time to tee up in Charleston, South Carolina, and Hamilton, Bermuda — the only two stops on this 11-day cruise. There’s also an option to attend the 83rd Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, for those who fully live the link life. For everyone else, there’s Civil War history and Southern hospitality to find in Charleston, while pink-sand beaches and pastel-hued colonial architecture line Bermuda — and then there’s the award-winning ship itself. (From $1,399 per person for 12 days.)

Go with the flow of the Mississippi

Just before the Mississippi River joins the Gulf of Mexico, it hits Louisiana — and Louisiana hits back with such mesmerizing character that you’ll feel wonderfully at her mercy. With USA River Cruises , you can float from New Orleans to the immaculately preserved historic river towns of St. Francisville and Nottoway in true Southern style: aboard the all-suite paddlewheel steamboat American Duchess . As Louisiana reveals her gifts in turn — be it antebellum remnants, a truly intoxicating melting pot of cultural influences, or a brass-tinged nightlife that wakes up the sun — just sit back and go with the river’s flow. (From $1,199 per person for six days.)

Test the crystal-clear waters of the Eastern Caribbean

An ideal place to catch the travel bug, the Eastern Caribbean comes with a certain ease that’s hard to replicate — and you’ll be hard-pressed to find nicer waters to dip your toes into. With Carnival , you can take turns at tropical adventure and idyllic leisure, whether that’s swimming among waterfalls in the Dominican Republic’s Rio Damajagua, rum tasting on St. Thomas, or exploring Puerto Rico’s Central Mountains by horseback. (From $399 per person for seven days.)

Join the revolution in Chesapeake Bay

Ghosts of the American Revolution stir off the coast of Baltimore and the nation’s capital, particularly in Chesapeake Bay aboard the American Constitution . The new 175-passenger ship from American Cruise Lines docks at a new port every day, putting the Revolutionary War’s most important sites — like Yorktown’s monumental battlefield and the Founding Fathers’ homes — at your doorstep, with period experts on hand both at sea and on shore. (From $4,805 per person for 11 days.)

Discover what makes the Great Lakes so great

Traveling between Chicago and New York entirely by boat feels like getting backdoor access to a trendy nightclub, only without the secret handshakes. As you traverse 12 waterways — from the Great Lakes to the Erie Canal and on into the Hudson River — Great Lakes Cruising ’s Great American Waterways tour makes you feel like you’re getting exclusive access to a side of America that doesn’t often get seen. The cruise connects industry with interest, with excursions to a working Blacksmith shop and the Henry Ford Museum, along with the opportunity to marvel at master engineering each time your ship passes through the canal locks. (From $5,149 per person for 16 days.)

American River Cruises: Start Here to Plan Your US River Vacation

' src=

You may be surprised to learn there are excellent options for American river cruises across the United States.

American Song aerial view of the America Cruise Lines river boat in the water on the west coast of the USA during golden hour sunset time.

Having experienced one firsthand, we understand the beauty that awaits travelers when exploring the USA's rivers from the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers to the Snake and Columbia Rivers and beyond.

When you hear the words “river cruises,” you may initially think of Europe, where they're most popular, exploring France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. But it turns out there are phenomenal options right here in our home country, good ‘ole America. We have the information you need to start planning your US River Cruise vacation.

Disclosure: There are affiliate links in this post, which means we may earn a small commission if you click the link and proceed with a purchase,  at no cost to you . We truly only recommend hotels, products, and services we personally use. As Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Reasons to Book a US River Cruise

If you’re American, the many benefits of an American river cruise may push you to book a cruise in the country you live in instead of traveling abroad.

You Do Not Need a Passport

You may like the idea of not having to have a passport with you if your stops are all in the United States. (If it crosses into Canada, like a Great Lakes cruise , you may need a passport. But US River Cruises are nearly all purely American so that you won’t need a passport.)

You Can Potentially Drive to Your Port of Embarkation

You may be able to drive to your point of departure. This especially works well if you have a close-jaw itinerary that begins and ends in the same city.

Many people are afraid of flying, simply love to drive, or want to budget without the cost of flights. This could be reason enough for you to book a US River Cruise!  (Which is also an eco-friendly way to approach cruising .)

Support America's Industries and National Parks

Another reason to support the river cruise line industry in the United States is simply to support American-made and American-operated products.

Perhaps you love American history and US Parks and want to learn more about them; a river cruise in the United States is a phenomenal experience to support your learning.

You'll Be Closer to Home in case of a Health Emergency

Lastly, if you like the thought of being on American soil during vacation because you’re concerned about your health, it may be comforting to know that you’ll be in a country where you’re familiar with the hospitals or urgent care facilities and pharmacies. We're talking about places like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid.

In the case of a medical need or emergency, you’ll be closer to home than if you were overseas and near familiar day-to-day chain stores we all rely on.

Even in a non-emergency medical situation, it’s comforting to know that your medical insurance plan will work in whatever areas your insurance coverage functions in the United States! (Regardless, we still recommend buying trip insurance , which is different than medical insurance.)

US Rivers that American River Cruises Sail

If you’ve ever looked at a map of United States rivers only — absent of state borders, mountains, and other information — it’s clear that the country's rivers are like its veins that keep it alive. Why not explore them?

From the east coast to the west and the land in between, there are many rivers in the US that cruises sail on. Cruising these United States rivers presents a unique view of the American landscape.

Each river cruise in the US also offers interesting excursions that allow travelers to gain a unique perspective on the history and cultures of the country. Usually, a river cruise includes one activity in a given city and then has the option to change to a different activity (or upgrade your excursion) for an additional cost.

We are going to take you through the following areas and subsequent rivers you can sail on within each region of the US:

West Coast River Cruises

Mid-america river cruises, east coast river cruises.

There are two well-known rivers on the west coast to consider sailing: the Columbia River and Snake River. Cruises on these rivers usually operate between spring and fall.

This area is so well-liked that many river cruise companies offer cruises that explore both rivers. A river cruise on these two rivers usually lasts for five to eight days and makes stops at ports along the way.

Naturally, these US river cruises highlight west coasts attractions.

Columbia River and Snake River: US River Cruise Combo

Most river cruises in the United States combine Columbia River and Snake River stops. River Cruises offering trips on these rivers are available from spring until the early months of the winter season. They explore Oregon and Washington.

You’ll be wowed by the mountainous scenery and various city stops over your five to eight adventurous days filled with activities, socializing, and learning about the northwest coast.

The most famous landmarks you may get to see during a cruise on these US rivers include The Dalles (famous for being the last stop on the Oregan Trail), Mount St. Helens, Multnomah Falls, Hells Canyon, and Lower Granite Dam Fish Ladder.

For example, you may book a nine-day cruise with American Queen Voyages that begins in Spokane and ends in Portland . There is also a choice with them for a one-way cruise from Portland to Spokane .

The Dalles river cruise in the United States with American Queen Voyages.

More About the Columbia River

This river flows between the US and Canada, British Columbia, and Washington State, and then into Oregon.

If You Only Want to Cruise the Columbia River

You can take a shorter, five-day river cruise on the Columbia River, only, with American Cruise Lines.

Their Highlights of the Columbia River Cruise stops at many great spots, such as Hayden Island, Astoria-Megler Bridge, Multnomah Falls, Mount Hood, and Mount St Helens.

This cruise is a close-jaw , Hayden Island, Oregon option that visits three cities between the start and end of the cruise.

More About the Snake River

The Snake River connects with the Columbia River in Burbank, Washington. (It reminds us of how three rivers converge in Passau, Germany, which you see during a Europe Danube River Cruise .)

The Snake River and Columbia River separate as the Snake River heads northeast. It then goes on a winding, snake-like journey. The water travels in an intense snake-like pattern for almost 1,079 miles, hence its name.

Once it reaches Lewiston, Idaho, the Snake River snakes south between the Oregon and Idaho border. It continues through the border of Idaho and Washington, and finally continues its journey east until it reaches Palisades Reservoir, which is on the border between Idaho and Wyoming.

There are no cruises that only cover the Snake River. That may change as cruise lines change their itineraries depending on the year. However, as mentioned above, you can join a cruise that sails on the Snake River and Columbia River if you want to explore both.

River Cruises in the US, American Song from American Cruise Lines on the Columbia and Snake Rivers.

The mid-America region of the United States is beautiful and has a lot to offer. But unfortunately, these “flyover” states, as they are often called, don’t get the attention they deserve.

One of the most famous US river cruises in the entire country is here, on the Mississippi River.

From nature parks, hiking trails, water activities, and even areas to learn about the country's history, famous landmarks are worth visiting along Mid-America river cruise stops from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to New Orleans’ Creole culture.

Mississippi River Cruises

The Mississippi River is undoubtedly one of the most famous rivers in the US. Therefore, naturally, cruise lines would be remiss not to offer cruises on this river.

It stretches 2,340 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its popularity, there are plenty of options for overnight Mississippi River Cruises on the three major cruise lines that offer US river cruises.

Their cruise options span five days to 22 days. Cruisers can choose to explore the lower Mississippi River, upper Mississippi River, or both.

The Mississippi River flows through the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Though these states may be less popular for tourism than California, New York, or Florida, a Mississippi River cruise excitingly brings them attention.

If you're a guest of a US river cruise on the Mississippi, you will discover the region as you visit places like the National Great Rivers Museum and Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois. You may also stop by the Mississippi River Museum in Tennessee, and Natchez National Historical Park in Mississippi, just to name a few.

Some cruises span another river in addition to a stop or two along the Mississippi River. For example, this is the case with an Ohio River Cruise and Mississippi River Cruise or an Illinois River Cruise and Mississippi River Cruise .

Upper Mississippi River Cruise vs. Lower Mississippi River Cruise

Because there is so much to see along this great river, cruise lines often offer an Upper or Lower Mississippi River cruise or a long cruise that explores both. (To us, this just means more reasons to be a repeat cruiser!)

You can’t go wrong with either cruise, but in our humble opinion, a Lower Mississippi River Cruise is a bit more exciting.

On the other hand, an Upper Mississippi River Cruise is more low-key in its ports and activities, drawing more on US History than the hustle and bustle of more major southern cities (like New Orleans).

Ohio River Cruise (Along with Mississippi River Stops)

The Ohio River is 981 miles, travels from Pennsylvania to Illinois, and then flows into the Mississippi River. The river's path is along the border of a few additional states: West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

“Ohio” is a Native American name that translates to “Good River.” And what could be better than a river cruise on its waters?

American Queen Voyages has several cruises that sail the Ohio and Mississippi rivers . Here are a few options:

  • A nine-day river cruise that begins in Pittsburgh and ends in Louisville, Kentucky. Highlights include visiting the Rosemary Clooney museum in Augusta, Kentucky, and a visit to Cincinnati, Ohio, famous for its John A. Roebling Bridge. (Which we read about in The Great Bridge , thanks to its architect of the same name.) The reverse voyage, a nine-day sailing from Louisville to Pittsburgh, differs slightly only by one city.
  • Over nine days, sail from Louisville, Kentucky, to St. Louis, Missouri. Taste bourbon and the cuisine of this notable “Louisville Slugger” city, and end with a Hop On Hop Off bus tour of St. Louis, where you’ll catch photo-worthy glimpses of the city’s architecture, including the Gateway Arch.

Illinois River Cruise (Along with Mississippi River Stops)

The Illinois River is entirely contained within the state and is relatively short at 273 miles. This small river meets up with the Mighty Mississippi close to St. Louis in Grafton, Illinois.

An example of a journey that travels on both rivers is a nine-day American Queen Voyages Upper Mississippi and Illinois River itinerary.

Start in Ottawa, Illinois, and visit the most popular park in the state, Starved Rock State Park. Days later, complete your river cruise in St. Louis after visiting Grafton – where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi – and enjoy a taste of this iconic city in Missouri before heading home. (You can also extend your trip and tack on an Upper Mississippi itinerary!)

Whether you are a cruise lover or not, the East Coast is a fantastic area to explore by boat. The Atlantic region has a lot of great ports.

The typical timeframe of an east coast United States River Cruise is between eight and 11 days. If you’re cruising the northeast, you should plan for late spring, summer, or early fall. The opposite season (winter) may be best if you want to cruise Florida’s waterways.

Hudson River Cruises

The most beloved river in New York is the Hudson River. This body of water flows from the north to the south for 315 miles. It begins in the Adirondack Mountains at Lake Tear of Clouds and flows to New York City, and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

A river cruise in the US on the Hudson River usually lasts eight days, stopping along sought-after locations like Albany, Hyde Park, West Point, and of course, New York City.

American Cruise Lines operates eight-day cruises on the Hudson River during September and October when it’s prime time for leaf-peeping. If you’re keen on photography, this could be a splendid time to capture the colors of the fall foliage in all their glory )if mother nature is kind enough to show off during your cruise).

Stops along your journey will showcase amazing spots such as the Vanderbilt Mansion, Olana State Historic Site, Sleepy Hollow, and West Point Military Academy.

Southern River Cruises

Head south for some palm trees, delicious southern cooking, and Civil War history. Traveling on waterways in the USA to experience this southeastern part of the country with a lot of heart is sure to be memorable.

Cumberland and Tennessee River Cruises

The Cumberland River is 688 miles long and runs through Kentucky and Tennessee. The Tennessee River, a tributary to the Ohio River, is 653 miles long and runs through Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky.

A Tennessee River Cruise itinerary with American Cruise Lines visits cities that are very appealing to us over the course of eight days. We loved sailing with American Cruise Lines for a Tennessee River Cruise from Chatanooga to Nashville and were wowed by the beauty of the river.

Man on a balcony of a Tennessee River cruise ship American Serenade with Nashville skyscrapers in the distance.

Highlights include visiting Nashville for a taste of country music, meandering through charming small towns with historical significance like Wheeling, West Virginia, and disembarking in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

St. Johns River Cruises

Florida’s St. Johns River is approximately 320 miles long. It travels from Jacksonville in northern Florida to Ocala National Forest, near Central Florida’s famous city of Orlando .

You can book a closed-loop itinerary from Jacksonville with American Cruise Lines. Eight incredible days of discovery take you to exciting spots where you’ll learn more about Florida’s wildlife, its connection to golf, and see historic homes.

Ports highlighted during a river cruise on the St. Johns River in Florida include Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs, Palatka, Lake George, Amelia Island, and St. Augustine.

If you sign up for a St. Johns River cruise you can expect to travel on Mill Cove Lake near Jacksonville and onto the Tolomato River (part of the Intercoastal Waterway) near St. Augustine and Amelia Island.

This is an exciting trip for wildlife lovers. You will have a chance to spot alligators, manatees, and bald eagles in their natural habitat. Don’t forget to pack travel binoculars and your telephoto camera lenses!

What Cruise Lines Operate River Cruises in the US?

We’ve mentioned a few in this post and, if you noticed, repeat many of the same cruise line names for different itineraries. This is because there are not as many river cruise lines sailing in America as on other continents, like Europe.

The rules and regulations cruise lines need to follow to operate in the United States are stringent. This means abiding by requirements like their vessels being built within the country and a certain percentage of the crew being US citizens.

The three major US river cruise lines are as follows:

American Cruise Lines

  • American Queen Voyages – no longer operating as of February 2024
  • Viking

Due to the increased popularity and demand for American river cruises in recent years, these cruise lines have upgraded the interiors of their existing river cruise boats. We are excited they have ordered new boats for the future!

Let’s dive a little deeper into each cruise line.

American Cruise Lines has one of the largest United States river cruise portfolios. Across all their cruises, they operate nearly year-round. They offer cruises on the Mississippi River, in New England, the southeast United States, the Pacific Northwest, and even Alaska.

Five different classes of cruise ships comprise their fleet; they vary in guest capacity from 90 to 180 passengers, as follows:

  • American River Boats (180 guests)
  • Eagle Class (109 guests)
  • Constellation Class (170 guests)
  • Authentic Paddlewheelers (180)
  • Independence Class (90)

Seventeen American Cruise Lines vessels fall into one of the five categories of cruise ships above. They operate 35 itineraries that travel to 34 states.

Their focus on sustainability makes our earth-loving hearts happy. They source local ingredients as much as possible and have upgraded their ships to reduce energy consumption. What's more is that American Cruise Lines is committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics, just like we are .

Viking Cruises

Though Viking has been around for decades on other continents, they’re the newest to the American market. They debuted their first US river cruise ship on the Mississippi River in 2022.

Many people are loyal to the Viking brand for worldwide river cruise travel in Europe, Asia, and Africa. They offer an entry-level luxurious experience at an affordable price.

An investment with Viking for a US River Cruise will be money spent in confidence, knowing the product you’ll get for remaining loyal to the Viking brand.

Their Viking ship that sails in the US is aptly named “Viking Mississippi.” Its guest capacity is 386, and they have 148 crew onboard. The river ship has five decks; three and a half of those decks are made up of guest cabins.

American Queen Voyages

As of February 2024, American Queen Voyages has ceased operations .

American Queen Voyages (AQV) has three different classes of ships that indicate where they sail:

  • Lakes and Oceans

Their river cruise boats have the famous red paddlewheels that make them easy to identify. You may know the brand by its former company name, American Queen Steamboat Company.

The names of their vessels all begin with “American”: American Queen, American Countess, American Duchess, and American Empress.

Their lakes and oceans boat names begin with “Ocean,” and they currently have two: Ocean Voyages and Ocean Navigator. These vessels do not offer balconies with their cabins, whereas the river cruise and expedition boats with AQV do.

Lastly is their expedition ship, Ocean Victory, which sails in Alaska.

Cost of US River Cruises

If it’s your first time on a river cruise, you’ll be happy to learn that a lot is included in the cost. Things such as all meals, excursions, and gratuities are usually already worked into the price you’ll see when you browse options online.

River cruises are one of the best ways to explore the world (including the United States). Some people think that river cruises are expensive, but to us, the value of a river cruise is noteworthy .

Expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $14,000 per person for a river cruise in the United States. The range varies depending on the length of the sailing you pick, like whether you go on a river cruise for seven or 14 days, the time of year, and the cabin you select. For example, an interior cabin will likely cost less than an exterior cabin with a balcony.

Some river cruises include beer and wine with lunch and dinner. Others have it as an optional upgrade along with the usual drinks packages you can add to any cruise.

United States and North American Small Ship Cruise Options, Beyond Rivers Cruises

The US is a massive country with many rivers and other water bodies. It means the options to cruise American waters are not limited to rivers.

There are also lake cruises, cruises on bays, and ocean cruises. Cruise options are plentiful, and you can sail for nearly a week if that’s all your time and budget allows or for two to three weeks if you wish.

Perhaps river cruise boats that are 200 passengers or less aren’t for you, but you’d enjoy a ship with over 1,000 passengers with more entertainment options onboard, like multiple pools and thermal spas . If this is the case, you can cruise from many different ports along the coastal United States on bigger ships, as we did along the coast of California with Princess Cruises .

While these ships cannot possibly sail small bodies of water, like rivers, it’s possible to get the feel of a small ship aboard larger cruise ships if you look for cruise lines offering ship-within-a-ship experiences . (Which we highly recommend for big cruise ships!)

Great Lakes Cruises in America

If you want to sail the northern part of the United States but don’t want to head west to the Columbia and Snake Rivers, Great Lakes Cruises are a terrific option. They take guests on massive, breathtaking lakes that sail between the United States and Canada. Read more about Great Lakes cruises and decide what's right for you.

Historic River Cruises from Baltimore (Sailing the Chesapeake Bay and Inland Passage)

Chesapeake bay cruise.

You can sail on the Chesapeake Bay out of the Port of Baltimore. While this isn’t technically a river, it will give you a similar feel to river cruising. This is especially true because American Cruise Lines offers a cruise here on the same ships that sail rivers.

Some cities visited during a six-day itinerary on the Chesapeake Bay with American Cruise Lines include Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, and Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia .  This cruise sails numerous times in late October, early November, and May.

East Coast Inland Passage Cruise that Sails Through Charleston

Many people wonder how you can cruise on an overnight ship and visit Charleston, a highly sought after destination on the east coast, in South Carolina. In this case, American Cruise Lines has two itineraries that may be of interest to you. They travel through the East Coast Inland Passage .

One is their cruise that begins in Baltimore, Maryland, and ends at Amelia Island in Florida, just south of the Florida-Georgia border. This 15-day cruise sails in October, November, or April and allows passengers to see more of the southeast coast than any other option.

Enjoy stops at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (in the Outer Banks ), Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Savannah and Jekyll Island, Georgia , to name a few.

If you’re looking for a shorter cruise that's something like eight days, consider a cruise that begins in Charleston and ends at Amelia Island. This essentially cuts the 15-day itinerary in half, but you still get to stop at key locations like Savannah, Hilton Head, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island .

Sail Maine’s Coast

We embarked on a four-day summer sailing aboard the schooner American Eagle along coastal Maine. The trip was delightful and definitely a favorite vacation memory.

As our trip report recalls , sailing on a schooner isn’t luxurious or fancy. It is, however, a unique experience where you bond with other guests and enjoy being on deck most of the time you’re on the water. You'll certainly quickly appreciate the beauty of Maine.

You can help with the sails if you want and enjoy being row-boated to the shore to explore Maine’s beautiful terrain on one of the many islands that are part of the state. The ship goes where the captain chooses – and there's really no area that isn't worthy of a stop in the captain's repertoire.

If you don’t fancy a US river cruise but still want to cruise the waters of the United States on a small boat, consider a Maine Windjammer Cruise .

Blue skies and water for Maine cruising along the coast, on a historic schooner with a mast and two sails in the picture.

Puget Sound Cruises from Seattle

If Great Lakes Cruises and Chesapeake Bay cruises make your eyes perk up, then consider a Puget Sound Cruise on the west coast.

American Cruise Lines offers two itineraries in this breathtaking area: one is a Grand Puget Sound cruise that lasts 11 days and the other is eight days. Both sail roundtrip from Seattle and visit the gorgeous city of Victoria, British Columbia, the only Canadian stop on the journey.

They have scattered dates of availability; the longer Grand Puget Sound cruise is available throughout spring, summer and fall, while the shorter Puget Sound and San Juan Islands Cruise takes place throughout July.

Mega-Ship Cruise Itineraries Sailing from United States Ports

If small ship cruising isn’t for you, or perhaps you’re desiring a change of scenery from the usual small-ship cruise you sign up for, a bigger cruise ship may be the solution.

There are more differences than similarities when it comes to river cruises vs. ocean cruises , but we can all agree their commonality is a love for traveling on the water with hospitality in mind.

A mega-ship cruise out of a United States port doesn’t stay within the United States for the entire journey. But you can start in the country and travel to places like Bermuda, or the Caribbean, on these cruises. (Don’t forget your passport!)

You can even sail to Disney’s island, Castaway Cay , from Florida.

United States cruise ports of embarkation are all around the country, including the California coast, Seattle, Baltimore, Charleston, Galveston, New Jersey, and Florida.

Book Your US River Cruise Vacation

If it’s your first time going on a cruise and you want to stay within the United States (either because you don’t want to get a passport, for example, or you’re more comfortable staying closer to home), consider signing up for an American river cruise. In fact, you can contact our preferred travel advisors to learn more.

They are quite different — and are much more intimate — than mega-ships. There are fewer guests on riverboats, the crews’ attention is less divided, and you can explore US towns and cities that are not crowded yet have a lot to offer.

Consider a US river cruise for a honeymoon to celebrate your anniversary or simply a memorable vacation for five days to a week or even longer. River cruises in the USA are worth considering and are sure to open your eyes up to exploring your own American backyard.

7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

cruise within the us

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

The Great United States Cruise: 20 States in 60 Days

The Great United States Cruise: 20 States in 60 Days

From Sea to Shining Sea

In 2023 American Cruise Lines announced the longest-ever domestic cruise itinerary. The company’s new 60-day adventure, called The Great United States, explores 20 states, and spans all four time zones in the continental U.S. As the country approaches its semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of its independence, the new cruise honors America’s living history, and enduring legacies from sea to shining sea. Guests will begin at the Pacific Coast and travel east to the Atlantic, cruising 4 major rivers and America’s most picturesque coastlines. The Great United States experience culminates in New York Harbor with a viewing of the Statue of Liberty from the ship on the last day of the cruise.

“The Great United States cruise is a fantastic showcase of our country and of the breadth of American Cruise Lines . A river cruise of this magnitude has never been done before in the U.S., and only American Cruise Lines is capable of delivering it successfully,” said Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines.

American Cruise Lines’ The Great United States cruises will enable guests to discover the extraordinary beauty of America, from its breathtaking national parks and mountain ranges to its golden Midwest farmlands and salty New England harbors. Always sailing in sight of land and visiting only domestic U.S. ports of call, American’s guests will retrace the steps of Lewis & Clark on the Columbia & Snake Rivers, roll along the Mighty Mississippi with Mark Twain and Elvis, venture up the Hudson River during peak fall foliage season, and breathe in the fresh sea air of coastal New England.

Guests will cruise aboard the newest ships in the country—each, well-appointed with spacious staterooms and suites, private balconies, elegant restaurants and casual cafés, multiple lounges, and wide-open top decks for breathtaking views of the passing scenery. All elements of the travel experience will be fully curated, and all arrangements handled with the utmost care by American Cruise Lines’ dedicated travel team, ensuring guests have an impeccable experience throughout this monumental U.S. River cruise.

Cruises in the United States

Whether you want to explore the dynamic cities and rocky shores of the East Coast, taste wines in the California sunshine, bask on Florida’s golden beaches, or see Alaska’s incredible wildlife, our United States cruises will deliver your dream vacation. Immerse yourself in Boston’s historic sites and exciting culinary scene. Ride the vintage cable cars in San Francisco and explore the dazzling colors of Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Cruises to the United States take you to the heart of these iconic cities, as well as exploring some of the country’s most beautiful coastlines, from the icy peaks and forested inlets of Alaska to the lush landscapes of New England. The list of adventures in store is endless, from hiking, cycling, and kayaking to whale-watching, designer shopping, fine dining, and a rich, diverse culture. All this is yours, from the luxurious setting of one of our award-winning, contemporary ships.

USA Cruise Highlights

Cosmopolitan cities.

The USA can rightly claim to have some of the most exciting cities in the world. San Diego’s atmospheric Gaslamp Quarter is waiting to be explored, while in Boston, the Freedom Trail is a fascinating history lesson. Check out Pier 39 in San Francisco, and take a trip to Alcatraz. Discover Hemingway’s legacy in laid-back Key West, find your inner rock star in Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, or explore the interesting mix of cultures in New Orleans.

Spectacular Nature

Wherever you sail in the USA, you’ll be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes. Hawaii is a lush paradise of rainforest, volcanic peaks, and tumbling waterfalls, while Alaska is wild and untamed, a world of snowy mountains, glaciers, and old-growth forest. Sail the coast of New England in fall and take in the dazzling shades of scarlet and orange on the trees. Or head south to Key West for a setting of coconut palms, sandy beaches, and colorful coral reefs.

Exciting Cuisine

Whether you want to taste award-winning vintages in Napa Valley, feast on lobster rolls in New England, or sample gumbo in New Orleans, you’ll discover an incredibly varied culinary scene on your travels around the USA. Don’t miss a salmon bake or the chance to try reindeer sausages in Alaska. In San Francisco, head for Chinatown for tasty dim sum. Key West is famed for its tangy Key lime pie, while Seattle’s claim to fame is artisan-roast coffee—and those powerful Washington State wines.

United States Cruise Regions

The wild frontier of Alaska has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the USA, where you’ll find mile upon mile of jagged, snow-capped mountains and dense forest. On a cruise, you’ll be able to appreciate this wild beauty from both a land and sea perspective. You’ll see glaciers, rocky shorelines, historic gold rush towns, and flower-strewn mountain meadows. Along the way, you can hike, kayak, spot bears, go whale-watching, and feast on fresh salmon.

New England

New England has it all: cosmopolitan cities like Boston, arty seaside towns, windswept coasts, and verdant national parks. Follow the Freedom Trail in Boston, and explore Portland’s seafaring history under Maine’s vast skies. Hike the woodlands and glacier-scoured peaks of glorious Acadia National Park. Time your trip for the fall and admire the fiery colors of the foliage. Everywhere you go, there’s delicious seafood to taste, like lobster rolls, or claws dripping in melted butter.

Visit some of the most exciting cities on the Pacific Coast with Celebrity. See the graceful sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge in hilly San Francisco, and ride the historic cable cars. Whizz up the Space Needle in Seattle and take in the colors and buzz of Pike Place Market. In Los Angeles, browse the designer shops on Rodeo Drive and marvel at the stars’ homes. Catalina Island, meanwhile, is another world of rugged coastlines, diverse marine life, and hiking trails with sweeping views.

Indulge in a relaxing journey across the warm Pacific from Vancouver to the lush, volcanic islands of Hawaii, where waterfalls tumble from verdant peaks and the ocean is home to abundant whales and dolphins. Visit Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls from Hilo, and admire the fiery antics of Mount Kilauea. Learn about history in Honolulu, the location of the only royal palace in the USA, and Pearl Harbor. Join a firelight luau in Lahaina, and visit a working pineapple plantation.

The Sunshine State is the perfect place to start your cruise. Admire the colorful Art Deco architecture of Miami’s South Beach, and taste Cuban cuisine in Little Havana. Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Take a boat ride through the watery Everglades in search of alligators. Treat your kids to a day in the theme parks around Orlando—and meet astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center. Make time to visit those glorious beaches, too.

USA Cruise Itineraries

Celebrity Cruises offers a vast range of USA cruise itineraries and departure ports. Sail from Boston, or Cape Liberty in New Jersey. In Florida, choose between Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando (Port Canaveral), and Miami. West Coast ports include Los Angeles, Seattle, and Seward. Cruises range from short getaways to Key West to 13-night voyages from Vancouver, Canada to Honolulu.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the usa with celebrity cruises.

There’s no more comfortable way to explore the exciting coastlines of the USA than with Celebrity Cruises. You’ll dock in the heart of some of the country’s most iconic cities and sail along exquisite coastlines, visiting multiple destinations and only having to unpack once.

As you sail, you’ll discover all the wonderful amenities that make a vacation on board our award-winning ships such a luxurious experience. Live life at your own pace, whether you want a workout in the Fitness Center or a private cabana by the pool. Unwind in the spa, take in the views from the Magic Carpet on Edge-series ships, or relax on the fragrant grass at the Lawn Club on Solstice-series ships. Savor world-class cuisine every day. Elevate your experience in The Retreat, where you’ll enjoy beautiful suite accommodation, an exclusive lounge, and the culinary delights of Luminae at The Retreat.

The best cruises from the U.S. for every type of traveler

Looking to relax? Into adventure? Bringing the kids? We've found the perfect cruise for you.

Lauren Dana

Cruises have become increasingly popular in recent years, with over 35 million passengers slated to set sail in 2024 alone: and it’s easy to see why. Not only do cruises make for a convenient vacation option—you just need to unpack once, and you’ll never have to travel too far from your stateroom (if at all) for your next meal or drink—but they also offer plenty of onboard activities and amenities to appease all types of travelers. Plus, cruises are available across various price points and lengths. Whether you prefer oceans or lakes, islands or cities, spotting wildlife or sitting on the beach (no wrong answers!), I’ve used my experience both as a cruiser and travel writer—I’ve covered the industry for nearly five years—to narrow down the best cruises from the U.S. to suit all individuals, regardless of travel style and personal preferences.

Best cruises for every type of traveler

Best for wildlife spotting: Holland America’s Alaskan Explorer

1.  Best for wildlife spotting: Holland America’s Alaskan Explorer

It’s no secret that Alaska is home to some of the country’s best wildlife spotting opps, which is why I was psyched to embark on Holland America’s epic Alaskan Explorer sailing in August 2022. Both on and off the ship, I had the chance to spot many a whale—along with puffins, otters and other adorable and astonishing creatures that call the Last Frontier home. (If you’re lucky, you may even spot a bear or two!). Sailing roundtrip from Seattle, this bucket-list itinerary includes scenic cruising through the Puget Sound and Glacier Bay, along with stops in Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, Ketchikan, and last but not least, Victoria, British Columbia.

Best for island lovers: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island

2.  Best for island lovers: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island

With its varied landscapes—ranging from majestic mountains and volcanoes to stunning beaches to lush tropical rainforests—a trip to Hawaii offers something for everyone. While you can island-hop around the Aloha State via ferry or plane, it’s not exactly seamless. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island , which sails year-round from Oahu to Kauai, takes the stress out of planning a multi-island Hawaiian vacation. Cruisers will have the incredible opportunity to visit four Hawaiian islands—Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai— without having to schlep their luggage, unpack or worry about booking inter-island flights or ferries. Overnights in Maui and Kauai are also included in the itinerary, allowing travelers to immerse themselves and uncover the beauty of each locale.

Best for bachelorettes: Margaritaville at Sea’s Bahamas

3.  Best for bachelorettes: Margaritaville at Sea’s Bahamas

For a sun- and fun-filled bachelorette party weekend, consider one of Margaritaville at Sea ’s two- or three-night Bahamas sailings, which make for the perfect party-centric weekend escape. On board, your group can sip tropical-inspired cocktails (Mai Tais, anyone?) at one of several bars and lounges while listening to Jimmy Buffett tunes, get pampered at the spa, play a round of pickleball, and so much more. It’s worth noting that the line currently only has one ship, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, which sails out of Palm Beach; however, the line’s second ship, Margaritaville at Sea Islander, which will debut in June 2024, will sail from Tampa. Bonus: The line offers special bachelorette and girls getaway packages, which include access to the best available fares, group discounts, and even a dedicated concierge to take the hassle out of trip planning.

Best for families with young kids: Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise

4.  Best for families with young kids: Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise

Character meet-and-greets, drinking and dining venues, obstacle courses, and top-notch performances: Find all this and more aboard Disney Wish , which made its grand debut in 2022. The ship’s three-night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral (Orlando) visits Disney’s idyllic private island, Castaway Cay, known for its white-sand beaches and stunningly clear turquoise waters—and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot beloved Disney characters!

The onboard experience is just as spectacular: Little ones can live out their Disney dreams at the “Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure” culinary experiences, while more casual—albeit just as fun—eateries include Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream. The kids' programming is, as you can imagine, equally top-notch: Children can train alongside superheroes, battle it out with Marvel villains, embark on an epic interactive Star Wars adventure, and live out their dreams as a Walt Disney Imagineer, go crafting in Rapunzel’s Art Studio, and (so much) more.

Best for families of all ages: Royal Caribbean's Weekend Caribbean

5.  Best for families of all ages: Royal Caribbean's Weekend Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is best known for its show-stopping onboard entertainment offerings (think: 10-story dry slides, dueling waterslides, ziplining, carousels, surfing and skydiving simulators and escape rooms) and a seemingly endless amount of bars and restaurants. As such, this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages—picky eaters included!

While the kids are at play, grown-ups can bask in the sun from the adults-only Solarium, where I spent most of my time on board my Caribbean cruise. Royal Caribbean offers several weekend Caribbean itineraries that cruise roundtrip from major cities like Miami, Galveston, Los Angeles and Orlando (Port Canaveral); however, I recommend opting for one that includes a port of call in CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island paradise in the Bahamas that boasts its own waterpark along with thrill-seeking activities like ziplining and helium balloon ride.

Best for beach lovers: MSC Cruises’ Bermuda

6.  Best for beach lovers: MSC Cruises’ Bermuda

Bermuda is best known for its beautiful pink-hued stretches of sand, which pop perfectly against the clear blue waters. With that in mind, the idyllic isle is ideal for beach lovers. The best way to get there and experience the dynamic island? By booking MSC Cruises ’ six- or seven-night Bermuda itineraries. Passengers will sail aboard the massive MSC MeraViglia, which conveniently cruises to and from Brooklyn. The dazzling ship is complete with a two-deck promenade, oceanview lounge areas, an amusement area and an outdoor water park.

Best luxury: Crystal Cruises' Miami to San Diego

7.  Best luxury: Crystal Cruises' Miami to San Diego

The luxury line Crystal was recently relaunched this past summer following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment across two ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Its 16-night Miami to San Diego itinerary stops in Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama (where it’ll cross the world-famous Panama Canal); Quepos, Costa Rica; and Alcapoco and Cabo in Mexico. On board, guests can enjoy gourmet drinking and dining options—including the first and only Nobu restaurant at sea (I had the chance to preview the cuisine this summer and was blown away by the sushi, sashimi and, of course, the chef’s signature miso black cod)—along with personal butler service and contemporary oceanview staterooms and suites. Wellness seekers will especially enjoy the Aurora Spa, where services run the gamut from acupuncture and IV treatments to salt scrubs and hot stone massages.

Best budget: Carnival’s Baja Mexico

8.  Best budget: Carnival’s Baja Mexico

Carnival’s motto is “Choose Fun,” and that’s precisely what you’ll find on any of its 26 ships cruising the world. The wallet-friendly cruise line is a favorite among budget-conscious travelers craving a fun vacation that won’t necessarily break the bank. The line’s f our-day Mexico itinerary aboard Radiance of the Seas, which cruises roundtrip from Los Angeles and stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, packs plenty of added value. The standard cruise fare (from $234 per person) includes access to over ten restaurants—plus ample bars and lounges—and dozens of entertainment offerings (think: deck parties, game shows, trivia contests, outdoor sports activities, pools and hot tubs, karaoke, musical performances, stand-up comedy and more). So, what’re you waiting for?

Best all-inclusive: Viking Expedition Cruises’ Great Lakes Collection

9.  Best all-inclusive: Viking Expedition Cruises’ Great Lakes Collection

Viking is known for its adults-only, all-inclusive river, ocean and expedition cruises. As you can guess by its name, the 15-day Great Lakes Collection sailing—which cruises from Toronto, Canada to Duluth, Minnesota—takes adventure-seeking cruisers on an epic journey around all five majestic Great Lakes. Travelers will sail aboard the sleek Scandanivian-inspired Viking Octantis, which features all-balcony staterooms, cruising the Welland Canal, Niagara Falls, Cleveland, Michigan (Detroit, Alpena, Mackinac Island), Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, and a handful of Ontario hotspots (Georgian Bay, Silver Inlet, Thunder Bay).

While fares are pricy (from $13,995 per person), they are all-inclusive, folding in one shore excursion in each port of call, Wi-Fi, beverages (bottled water, beer, wine and soft drinks), taxes and fees, spa access, 24-hour room service and more.

Best adults-only: Virgin Voyages’ Fire & Sunset Soiree

10.  Best adults-only: Virgin Voyages’ Fire & Sunset Soiree

Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages is one of the newest—and most innovative—cruise lines out there. The adults-only line has done away with buffets, instead offering 20-plus fun, free and flavorful food concepts (think: Korean BBQ at Gunbae, tacos and tequila at the ‘gram-worthy Pink Agave and ice cream at the cheekily named Lick Me Till… Ice Cream). With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that the line is a favorite amongst foodies. The party-centric onboard experience comprises nightclubs, tattoo parlors and risque entertainment (cabaret performances, acrobatics shows, DJs and the like). Also, do yourself a favor and upgrade to a suite to enjoy exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop, a swanky members-only outdoor space for partying and sipping cocktails in style.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the itineraries, I’m especially partial to the four-night Fire & Sunset Soiree sailing, which sails roundtrip from Miami and calls on Key West and Bimini, where the line has its own buzzy beach club.

6 top transatlantic cruises for 2024.

Journey across the Atlantic while enjoying all the amenities at sea.

The Top Transatlantic Cruises

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 in New York.

Sailing from New York to England on Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 is just one of many transatlantic offerings in 2024.

Transatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 in New York, near the Statue of Liberty.

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Equinox at sea.

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas in port in Florida.

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.

What to do before or after your cruise from port tampa bay.

By Janet K. Keeler

Planning things to do before or after cruising from Port Tampa Bay is as fun to think about as the much-anticipated tropical cruise itself. The Tampa cruise port is conveniently located in a bustling area of Tampa, full of shops, attractions and restaurants, so the choices are plentiful.

The Tampa cruise port is one of the anchors of the Channelside District which puts cruisers within walking distance of a variety of things to do. And by variety, we mean good eats, too. The district is loaded with food options including Michelin-honored restaurants including Predalina and The Pearl .

Just a few blocks away from where you will embark at the Tampa cruise port is Sparkman Wharf , a tangle of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and live music. Yeah, we know the cruise ships offer an endless buffet, but you’ll get some local flavors—charred octopus Greek salad at Swigamajig —at Sparkman plus the chance to blow off some calories on the Splitsville bowling lanes.

Amalie Arena , the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, is within walking distance, too, and you might be able to sync your cruise with a game or even a concert. Madonna, Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Billy Joel and Megan Thee Stallion are just some of the acts that have played the venue recently.

For those who want to explore farther afield there are the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches on the other side of Tampa Bay. Wide beaches with white sand are the hallmark from Clearwater south to Fort De Soto Park.

There’s plenty more beyond eating, drinking and sunning to discover before or after your cruise out of Port Tampa.

The Florida Aquarium Tampa has resources for accessible access.

Explore the Underwater World

In the shadow of the big cruise ships at the Tampa cruise port is the Florida Aquarium which offers as much intergenerational fun as can be found aboard any cruise ship. The aquarium is one of those educational places that masquerades as a good time. Who wouldn’t want to peer through the glass wall at what baby alligators do underwater? They hardly look like the giant prehistoric reptiles that they will become. The exhibits cover Florida’s wetlands, beaches and coral reef exhibits. Just the right place to get cruisers in the mood for their tropical sea adventure.

Los bailarines de flamenco entretienen a los invitados en el restaurante Columbia de Ybor City

Experience Latin Culture

A few miles from the Port Tampa Bay cruise port is the lively Tampa neighborhood, Ybor City and a street car from the cruise port area will get you there. In the early 1900s, Ybor was the country’s center of cigar production and the city’s Cuban immigrant heart. The cigar factories have dwindled to just one— J.C. Newman Cigar Co .— and visitors can watch the action and take a one-hour guided tour of the facility. There are a few storefronts along Ybor’s Seventh Avenue where you can watch cigar rollers. A self-guided GPS-based tour can tell you more and there are even guided night ghost walks. Stop in Florida’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia , for Cuban coffee and a 1905 salad, named after the year the doors opened.

Busch Gardens - Kumba

Ride a Roller Coaster

Tampa’s popular theme park, Busch Gardens , is less than 10 miles from the cruise port and is a great place to take the kids if you’ve got an extra day. There are 10(!) roller coasters for thrillseekers ranging from Iron Gwazi, the world’s fastest and highest hybrid coaster, to Cheetah Hunt, the park’s longest coaster.  Five of them turn riders upside down. There are other rides too, like the Serengeti Flyer which soars over one of the animal encampments. The Serengeti Express train ride covers similar ground but keeps you on the ground. Besides rides and attractions, there are animals, animals, animals. More than 200 species of animals including penguins, hippos, rhinos, giraffes and more. Lots of opportunities for interaction and education. Busch means beer and there’s a taproom too.

Ride the Pirate Water Taxi

Tampa is steeped in pirate culture thanks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team and the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest in the weeks leading up to Easter. Think New Orleans Mardi Gras on the water with a pirate ship invasion and plenty of costumed rogues of the sea throwing beads in multiple parades. The Pirate Water Taxi takes its lead from the theme and plies the Hillsborough River and nearby channels much like a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. It makes 16 stops and No. 1 is at the Florida Aquarium, a quick walk from the Tampa Bay cruise port and parking. At stop #9, you can hop off and get a close up view of the docked Jose Gasparilla II pirate ship that leads the pirate fest invasion. Get off at  #12 and amble along the Tampa RiverWalk until you get to the Armature Works food hall to get locally brewed coffee or a bite to eat from one of the many vendors. Armature is stop No. 16 where you can board the water taxi again for the ride back to the cruise port.

Get Artsy across the Bay

Across Tampa Bay from Tampa, downtown St. Petersburg boasts five museums and a number of galleries, including one that houses the work of famed glass artist Dale Chiluly . It’s just across the street from the Morean Art Center which has rotating exhibits and a fine gift shop. The museums include the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg and its collection spanning 4,000 years; the Dali Museum which has an impressive collection of the Spanish surrealist’s master works; the James Museum of Western Art and its rotating and permanent collection of art that celebrates the American West; the Florida Holocaust Museum dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting tolerance, and the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement and its impressive collection of furniture and decorative arts. There are parking facilities downtown, and an Uber or Lyft ride is one way to cross the bay. The Cross Bay Ferry to downtown St. Petersburg is another alternative and the pick up spot in Tampa is about a mile from the cruise port.

Places to Remember

Downtown Tampa Paddleboarding

Bradenton Beach

Rakeyah Bean, 7, has help from her mother, Roterra Bean, both of Bradenton, casting their line on the water at the Riverwalk in downtown Bradenton. The unique outdoor gathering place features a walking trail overlooking the Manatee River. The elongated park spans 1.5 miles with a myriad of supported outdoor activities.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukraine hit Russian troops with long-range missiles 'US sent secretly'

Ukraine fired a US-supplied, long-range ballistic missile at a Russian target last week and overnight, according to reports. It comes as Joe Biden said much-needed weapons would be sent to Ukraine today after he signed a multibillion-dollar aid package into law.

Russia's deputy foreign minister has warned that NATO's nuclear weapons and facilities will be targeted if they are deployed in Poland.

Sergey Ryabkov told the state-run TASS news agency that joint NATO nuclear missions near the Russian border would be considered a threat to its security.

"Let alone permanent deployment [that] hotheads in Warsaw are speaking about," he adds.

"That is why all those politicians who are discussing such an option in and outside Poland should understand: any steps in this direction will not add to Poland's security and relevant facilities will inevitably be a target. And they will be in the fore in our military planning."

For context : Poland's president said this week that the country would be ready to host the nuclear weapons of NATO allies in response to Russia moving its nuclear weapons to neighbouring Belarus.

Andrzej Duda made the comments in an interview published in the Fakt tabloid.

"If there were a decision by our allies to deploy nuclear weapons, within the nuclear sharing, also on our territory in order to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank, we are ready," Mr Duda said.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine, after Joe Biden signed into law a bill for $61bn in aid for Ukraine.

The president immediately approved $1bn in military assistance that he said would be sent within hours.

The package included air defence capabilities, artillery rounds and armoured vehicles.

Behind the scenes, news of a more significant weapon was emerging.

US officials told the Associated Press that long-range ballistic missiles would be included.

What's more, they said the US had already secretly sent the weapons, named Army Tactical Missile Systems, to Ukraine last month and Ukraine had used them to attack a military airfield in Crimea last week and Russian troops in another occupied area on Tuesday night.

Long-range weaponry has previously been held back for fear it would be used to attack inside Russia - and the potential for NATO missiles landing there to provoke a wider escalation.

Before we resume our live coverage and regular updates, here is a recap of the other key moments from the last 24 hours.

  • Ukrainian drones struck a major Russian steel factory in the Lipetsk region and two oil depots containing in the Smolensk region, Kyiv intelligence sources said;
  • British helicopters flew to Finland, near the border with Russia, for the "biggest NATO exercise since the Cold War" - something Moscow warned risks "possible military incidents";
  • A Russian Orthodox priest who presided over the memorial service for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was suspended;
  • Rishi Sunak pledged to put the UK's arms industry on a "war footing" and boost defence spending to 2.5% of GDP;
  • A Russian minister was arrested and charged him with bribery, according to Interfax news agency.

We're pausing our live coverage for the evening, but we'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates and analysis.

Russia has vetoed a US-drafted resolution at the UN calling on countries to prevent an arms race in outer space.

Following the vote at the Security Council, the US suggested Russia "must be hiding something", having already accused Moscow of developing a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon.

Russia has denied the allegations, with its ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, saying:  "It's a joke of a resolution."

US administration officials declined to share details of intelligence to back the allegation.

The UN resolution called on states "to contribute actively to the objective of the peaceful use of outer space and of the prevention of an arms race in outer space".

The final vote tallies were 13 in favour and one abstention (China) before Russia's veto.

Vladimir Putin said earlier this year: "Our position is clear and transparent: We have always been categorically against and are now against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space."

The Ukrainian government has approved rules under which passports for military-age men can be issued only inside the country.

It represents a further tightening of regulations on mobilisation, after foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba criticised those abroad for failing to serve.

The new rules stipulated did not apply to nationals now permitted to cross state borders while martial law is in force, including those with disabilities.

Hundreds of thousands of military-age Ukrainian men are living abroad and the country faces a shortage of troops in the campaign against Russia.

"Staying abroad does not relieve a citizen of his or her duties to the homeland," said Mr Kuleba.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan has confirmed our earlier reports that the US sent long-range missiles to Ukraine.

He also confirmed America will send more of the missiles.

Ukraine has lost territory over the last six months due to the need to ration ammunition, he said.

Ukrainian troops were under severe pressure on the battlefield and Russia could make further tactical gains, he warned.

The US can continue to supply Ukraine with aid throughout the year, Mr Sullivan added.

Kyiv will need much more than the $61bn approved by the US today for a fight that could last years, a military expert has said.

The funding will help triage Ukrainian forces, but success is not guaranteed, according to Bradley Bowman, a defence strategy and policy analyst at the Foundation for the Defence of Democracies.

Realistic goals for the months ahead include avoiding the loss of major cities, slowing Russia's momentum and getting additional weaponry to Kyiv that could help them go on the offensive in 2025.

"In our microwave culture, we tend to want immediate results," Mr Bowman said.

"Sometimes things are just hard and you can't get immediate results. I think Ukrainian success is not guaranteed, but Russian success is if we stop supporting Ukraine."

Ukrainian drones struck and damaged a major Russian steel factory overnight, a Kyiv intelligence source has told Reuters.

The source said the attack had partially destroyed an "oxygen station" at the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant in the Lipetsk region.

This would have a long-term impact on the company's work, the source said.

The news comes after Reuters reported Ukraine had struck two Rosneft-owned oil depots containing 26,000 cubic metres of fuel in the Smolensk region in the same night.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked the US for recognising "we must cut the ground from under Putin's feet".

Welcoming the new $61bn in aid, the Ukrainian president said: "Regardless of what anyone says, we are gaining the support we need to continue protecting lives from Russian attacks."

He said the $1bn in military assistance approved to be sent today "include the exact types of weapons that our warriors require".

"I am grateful to president Biden, congress, and all Americans who recognise that we must cut the ground under Putin's feet rather than obeying him, as this is the only way to truly reduce threats to freedom. Together, we can ensure this."

Ukraine fired a US-supplied, long-range ballistic missile at a Russian target last week and overnight, the Associated Press reports.

They cited US officials as saying America secretly sent Army Tactical Missile System missiles in an aid package last month.

They were used to hit a Russian military airfield in Crimea last week and Russian troops in another occupied area overnight.

One of the officials said the US is providing more of these missiles in a new military aid package signed by Joe Biden today.

They give Ukraine nearly double the striking distance - up to 190 miles.

For months, the US resisted sending long-range missiles out of concern that Kyiv could use them to hit deep into Russian territory, escalating the conflict.

Separately, the vice chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff has said "the time is right" to provide long-range missiles to Ukraine.

They will help Ukraine take out Russian logistics nodes and troop concentrations that are not on the front lines, he said.

"I think it was a very well considered decision, and we really wrung it out — but again, any time you introduce a new system, any change — into a battlefield, you have to think through the escalatory nature of it."
