Cycling in Mauritius
Bike touring
From beaches and coastal trails to mountain climbs and pedalling through fields of sugarcane, cycling in Mauritius is a fantastic way to get to know this tiny island nation. Lounging in the Indian ocean around 600 miles (1,000 km) off the coast of Madagascar and around 110 miles (200 km) from Réunion, this stunning island benefits from phenomenally diverse landscapes and terrain.
Cycle routes in Mauritius take you along quiet lanes and through majestic landscapes on hard-packed earthen trails. You can explore coastal routes that whisk you from fishing village to fishing village, pausing to admire the sky blue lagoons formed by the island’s enormous reef system. To get an overview of the barrier reefs, pedal higher into the hills and look down to see how the water changes from lagoon to ocean.
With bike hire widely available and warm weather throughout the year, cycling around Mauritius gives you the opportunity to experience its countryside freely.

From the sea to the mountains
With an area of 790 square miles (2,040 km 2 ), many of the best bike rides in Mauritius give you ample chance to see significant swathes of the country, particularly if you don’t mind a bit of elevation gain. As an island, you can expect plenty of fantastic coastal rides with golden sand coves around every dramatic cliff. Much of the terrain is flat, particularly along the coastline and your rides will lead you through thriving beachside communities where every street ends in a lagoon view.
There are several mountainous parts of Mauritius, so if you like climbing, you’ll be richly rewarded with tropical forests and expansive views. The Black River Gorges National Park in the south west is the largest and most dramatic of the upland areas however, there are only a couple of roads cutting through it, making the roads busier than you might like. You can rent mountain bikes in the area though, and explore the vast amount of off-road trails which are car-free and packed with exceptional sights.
Wildlife-spotting in Mauritius
Ever spotted a monkey whilst two-wheeling? While cycling in Mauritius you may well find yourself in the company of macaques if you ride through Black River Gorges National Park, as they’ve made quite a home for themselves here after being introduced to the islands hundreds of years ago. Deer and wild boar call the forest here their home too.
For birdlife, Mauritius is a stop on the larger journeys of plenty of fascinating flyers like flamingos, tropicbirds, frigatebirds and boobies. The endemic pink pigeon is a wonderful bird to spot as well, one of the few surviving endemic species of the island.
Things to bear in mind
You cycle on the left in Mauritius. The main roads are generally fairly safe to ride on and wide enough for drivers to pass you easily. Cycling at night is best avoided, as the lighting is poor or non-existent. Some roads aren’t well-maintained so keep an eye out for potholes and always take a puncture-repair kit with you. Mauritius is tropical, so never cycle anywhere without bringing good water supplies and use sun protection.

Cycling in Mauritius
With its many off-road paths, tracks, sugarcane fields and beaches, the Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius presents the opportunity for visitors to travel around this little piece of paradise in a far gentler, eco-friendly and cost-effective manner – by cycling!
Mauritius is just 65 kms long and 45kms wide and with its different terrains there are some amazing routes and trails for every level of ability from beginners to professionals.
It is worth noting though that some cyclists find the roads in the North particularly around Port Louis narrow and busy. They are right, as you would need to be an extremely confident cyclist BUT there are ways around this – you just need to take precautions and know where to cycle!
Best Time To Visit
So, what this means is that it is best if you are planning to explore the island on a bicycle to visit during their winter months when temperatures are a little cooler and importantly less humid.
Whilst tourists flock to the island from October to December it is hot and humid and more akin to laying on the beach than taking on the islands cycling routes – however each to their own!
A Choice of Bike
For those looking to be a little more extreme, Mauritius has some spectacular mountainous regions, in particular at Black River in the South of the island, that provides a tougher challenge. If this is your aim, then a mountain bike would be more suitable.
In the North there are the two popular towns of Grande Baie and the capital Port Louis so it may be that a traditional bike is more suited to your needs as you opt to explore not only the countryside but also the bustling towns and markets.
Where to Hire Bikes in Mauritius
The first place may be your hotel although from personal experience some only allow you to use them within the hotel grounds which kind of defeats the object of wanting to hire one to explore! Another thing to consider is hotel rented bikes may not be of the same quality that you get when hiring from a specialist cycling shop.
A better option perhaps is a bike rental shop or agency where the average cost is about 300 Mauritian Rupees per day.
You could also sign up to a guided group cycling excursion which includes expert commentary on the island as you go.
Rules of The Road
For many, cycling in Mauritius will take some getting used to as they cycle, and drive, on the left! So for a British person like myself, this is what I am used to but for many international visitors its worth spending a few moments familiarising yourself with this strange new world!
In some parts of the island, particularly around Port Louis there are main roads and freeways and often, particularly around rush hour, a lot of traffic. Despite these roads often having plenty of space at the side, I would avoid them at this time, unless you are a very confident cyclist!
Some of the roads in Mauritius can be a little uneven particularly as you head into more rural areas so beware of the cyclist’s number one hate – the pothole!
Popular Areas
North west coast.
As mentioned the main roads here can get very busy, especially around rush hour. My advice here is to stick to the coast as much as possible however the detour to Pamplemousse will take you inland so at some stage you will have to negotiate busy roads.
Grande Baie is a lovely town with its Bazaar selling all manner of cheap toot and fake fashion while the markets sell fresh produce and give you that true feel of Mauritian friendliness and hospitality. There are an increasing number of high-end boutiques, numerous cafes and delightful restaurants in the area known as Sunset Boulevard. Then there are the beaches that are straight out of the finest holiday brochures! The nightlife is also the best on the island so I would recommend an overnight in Grande Baie at the very least!
The village of Pamplemousses is a popular location for those seeking to view and understand the flora of this unique island. Cycling tours are available here that allow you to discover L’Aventure du Sucre, an old sugar factory, where you can ride through the sugar cane fields and visit the colonial Château de Villebague. Take time to marvel at the giant lilypads and spice trees at the famous Pamplemousse Botanical Gardens, the oldest in the southern hemisphere.
If you were cycling to Port Louis from Grande Baie then it is best to follow the coast however from Pamplemousse as soon as you arrive at the capital city limits you will have to venture onto the busy roads. It’s not ideal but there is no way to avoid it. Port Louis offers the chance for a spot of retail therapy at the Caudan Waterfront as well as attractions like the Mauritius Postal Museum, Chinatown, Le Citadelle and the Central Market for souvenirs and fresh produce. Sampling the street food in Port Louis is a must!
The area around Flic en Flac is generally pretty flat and easy for those hiring a bicycle. However as you head inland the main roads are busier and more hilly.
A popular yet challenging area to cycle to is Casela and the Black River Gorge where there are a variety of attractions and views:
The Casela Nature Park is a huge adventure centre as well as nature reserve where you can take a safari quad bike, ride a roller coaster or go zip lining. There is also a lovely restaurant with views across the valley – just watch out for the monkeys stealing your food!
Close to Chamarel is the rum distillery. Not ideal when you are cycling but you could pop a bottle in your rucksack for a much deserved tipple when you get home.
Black River Gorge is named after the black stones that are found in the river. Its best known for its hiking trails particularly those that cover the ebony forest however there are some cycling routes and the landscape here is incredible.
In the extra South West is Le Morne Peninsula. This is a must see as this is probably the most iconic site on the island of Mauritius and a World Heritage site. The mountain is striking and steeped in a dark history which relates to slavery. The views from the top are breathtaking.
SOUTH COAST
The Bois Chéri tea estate is a working tea factory with a museum, restaurant, shop. Its worth a stop as close by there are many tracks near the tea plantations with excellent views of the coast line.
South of Bois Cheri is the rural region of Mauritius known as Souillac. Cycling here is easier than most other areas of Mauritius. You can discover small villages both inland and on the rocky south coast where you can also indulge in local Creole style food in the local restaurants and kiosks. This is also a great place to learn and discover the colonial heritage of Mauritius.
Mahebourg is the former capital of Mauritius. This little coastal village is worth visiting. The place is a hive of activity while the beaches allow you the chance to kick off your shoes and relax in the Indian Ocean!
The flat wetland and beaches in the Belle Mare region are perfect for cyclists.
There are a large number of white sandy beaches along this stretch of coastline which you can follow. Make sure you head south to the village of Trou d’Eau Douce which is just across from the popular landmark of Ile aux Cerfs.
From here you can continue along the South East coast heading south to Grande Riviera Sud East to view the waterfalls. Or why not venture inland into the mountains and across to Souillac and Chamaral.
Final Tips for Cycling in Mauritius
Don’t forget to take water and some snacks and to keep yourself hydrated and your energy levels high!
Whatever the time of year always use sunscreen and wear a hat.
Check the weather forecast before heading out as the weather can change quickly.
Avoid cycling late at night. Mauritius roads do not have great street lighting.
Make sure you have your phone and the numbers of your hotel, group leader and maybe even the local hospital in case of problems.
Pack a repair kit in case of mechanical or tyre blowouts.
Feel free to ask the locals for help, advice or directions. They are so friendly and will more often than not speak English.
Take your time to enjoy the island and taking a detour, down to a hidden cove or beach, can be the moment that will always remind you of that amazing cycling holiday in Mauritius!

A LOCAL LEGEND
Colin Mayer was a "one of a kind" sports legend who inspired an entire generation of Mauritian cyclists, including the members of the Committee, Pascal, Sebastien, Michel and Christophe.
Passionate for sports since a young age, and inspired by his uncle Luc Bax de Keating, who was himself a multi-sport icon, Colin only started cycling at the late age of 30 and very soon became a leading figure in the local peloton. His family and close friends commemorate Colin through this event, which serves to inspire riders and aspiring riders throughout Mauritius to push themselves beyond their limits, the way Colin did.

Leisure in Mauritius goes beyond its beaches, the island is blessed with lush green forests, hills, and rivers. To get a taste of this side of the country you can go cycling in Mauritius, join a bike experience or even better an electric bike tour. I did a 5 hours e-bike tour with Discover Nous Zil in Souillac in the Southern part of Mauritius, and it was a great way to connect with nature and see a local side of the island.
First things first, do you know what is an electric bike is? It’s a bike with an electric assistance engine, you can switch it on or off and adjust the level of assistance you want. The popularity of e-bikes is increasing fast and it’s easy to understand why. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a seasoned cyclist. With an electric bike, you can cover more ground with less effort.
If you like the idea of riding an e-bike, keep in mind that you can find e-bike tours at the destination you are traveling to, or you can bring your own e-bike conversion kit in your luggage.

The company Discover Nous Zil offers 6 e-bike tours in Mauritius, from a half-day to a full day of adventure. The regions covered are Grand Port, Le Morne, Pamplemousses, Chamarel, and Souillac. I’ve done the Souillac tour and was pretty happy with the route.
Mauritius e-bike tour review
Our cycling in Mauritius adventure started at the Place du Mouli in Bel Ombre. The guide Warren greeted us with a big smile, a few jokes, and a safety briefing. The e-bikes were in good condition, mine was a Trek size L, the right fit for me. He also taught us how to use the electric assistance, we practice a lit bit and we’re ready to hit the road.
Our first kilometers cycling in Mauritius was through a relatively busy road overlooking sugar cane fields. For our safety, we had to stay in line all the time, we couldn’t overtake and had to keep a safe distance from the next biker. People drive quite fast in Mauritius but in general, they do respect the cyclists and keep a reasonable distance.
After a few ups, downs and curves we arrived at Saint Felix Beach, the first stop of our e-bike tour in Mauritius. It was supposed to be a stop for photos but it turned into a strategic stop. I think the skies heard my complaints about the heat and poured rain down. Seriously, it rained heavily for a few minutes. I had my rain jacket on since the start of the tour because I’ve learned that the weather in Mauritius changes fast. The guide gave rain jackets to the rest of us and we were back on the road. This part of the route was along the beach, a mix of bike paths and offroad.
The rain followed us for a while, not strong anymore but it was there, cooling our faces from time to time. The sea breeze and the salty air were constant companions reminding us that the ocean was nearby. Our second stop was at the Riambel Beach, a good opportunity for photos and I had time to ride in the middle of pine trees and sand tracks. Happy kid!
Back to the main road, we are riding safely again and alert all the time. We rode past small villages where people greeted us as if we were friends. It is interesting to see a different side of Mauritius, away from the all-inclusive resorts.
Our next stop was a place where the rough sea hits the coast hard and gained an appropriate name: the Crying Rock. Most of the resorts are located in lagoons protected by reefs, this part of the island is exposed to the mighty Indian Ocean. The powerful waves crashing at the cliffs made us feel tiny and fragile. Our guide explained that between June and November it is possible to see whales crossing this part of the sea. Please be careful with cliffs and waves when cycling in Mauritius. The strong winds bring the spray from the waves leaving the rocks very slippery.
It was almost noon when we set off to Surinam village, lunch was waiting and we were hungry. I was particularly excited about our lunch because Warren told us that we would have it at a locals’ home and the cook was amazing.
We cycled about 20 minutes when Warren told us to park our bikes and follow him. As very obedient (and hungry) kids, we parked our bikes and asked where we could wash our hands, trying to cause a good impression.
Warren introduced us to Nala, a lovely lady that opened her home to us. She was flawless rolling the dough while talking to us, impressive. Nala announced the menu: vegetarian samosas, chili bites and roti with curries. When our guide mentioned that Nala was a great cook, he wasn’t joking. The chili bites were good but the samosas, OMG, gorgeous! The right mix of spices and veggies on a crispy dough.
The main dish was a flatbread called roti served with 4 different curries: butterbeans, fish, pumpkin, and a local herb that reminds spinach. The dough was plain, not savory nor sweet, a perfect vessel for the curries. None of the curries were too spicy, for me they had the right amount of spices, a bit hot but not burning.
With a full tummy, it was time to head back. TBH this was the hardest part of our bike tour in Mauritius, not sure if it was all the food we had or sadness because we knew the tour was about to end. The way back was on the main road which means more traffic although the landscape was still beautiful.
We did a quick stop at the Riviere des Galets Beach where black pebbles stones cover all the ground giving the beach a unique beauty and a distinctive sound when the waves crashed over the stones.
In total we cycled about 35 kilometers, I was tracking the activity with my TomTom Spark 3 until it ran out of battery. Tip: charge your phone and/or smartwatch the day before the bike tour. I forgot to do it and ended up with half activity saved on my Strava feed .
It was pleasant to cycling in Mauritius, even with the rain. It was a great experience to admire the beautiful green landscapes alternating with pristine beaches. I would like it better if it was more off-road and far from the traffic, but I believe it would make the bike trip longer. For sure I enjoyed the e-bike tour in Mauritius and would do it again.

Have you visited the distillerie of chamarel?
Which bike to choose?
On your own, with friends or with your family, choose the bike most suited to you. You can choose between a VAE (electric assisted bike), a fat bike or a VTT (classic mountain bike).
You have to take in consideration the places you have chosen to visit and the extent of your physical shape when selecting the type of bike most adapted to you. Choosing the right bike will enable you to optimize your ride. The helmet is strongly recommended and is included in the rental for all types of bicycles. Our bikes are accessible to all, adults and children.
Location of Fat Bike in Mauritius:
The fat bike is an all-terrain sports bike particularly suited to rough terrain. Its oversized wheels ensure optimal grip on all types of surface including sand and mud. Unlike some conventional mountain bikes, it has no shock absorbers; shocks are being absorbed by its big wheels. It is also more comfortable than a classic ATV.
The Fat Bike is ideal for those who really want to ride on rough surfaces. This bike goes everywhere, where other bikes do not pass. The Fat Bike is without electric assistance and is ideal for sportsmen.
Children's ATV rental:
We rent mountain bikes for children, as from the age of 5, so they can follow you on your hikes through Mauritius.
We have a wide choice of children’s bikes adapted to their size and age.
In Mauritius, we are not equipped with bike lanes or green lanes to encourage safe cycling.
It is therefore strongly recommended not to authorise children to ride on public roads by their own. The roads are relatively narrow in Mauritius and often without sidewalks.
If you are staying in a place nearby forest trails, or roads that are not well travelled, take advantage of it to make excursions on two wheels. The family bike rides will leave you with unforgettable memories.
Electric bicycle rental (VAE) in Mauritius:
An electric-bicycle also known as an e-bike is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which, on demand, can be used for propulsion.
The VAE (electric-assisted bike) is ideal for off-road walks and provides valuable assistance during climbs or moments of fatigue. Pedal normally and the electric power assist motor turns on automatically. It will provide more power as soon as it detects that you need more assistance. This bike can reach 25 Km / h.
The benefits of the electric-bike are more obvious when in a group the physical level of each participant is different.
The assistance provided by the electric motor will allow the less sporty person to follow others more easily. With our electric-bike you will travel a greater distance in less time, visit places not accessible to cars, and you will be less tired. The electric bike is the best way to explore Mauritius through its narrow roads and sandy paths in the countryside. You will be able to maximize your activities and excursions during your holidays in Mauritius.
Book your bike now
Classic mountain bike rental in mauritius:.
The mountain bike is a bike for sports hiking and as the name suggests is an all terrain bike. It is therefore ideal for riding on all types of surfaces. It is very practical for those who want to enjoy beautiful sceneries of Mauritius while performing a sport activity.
Child seat or baby carrier
We can, on request, provide you with a child seat for young children so that they can enjoy excursions with you during your holidays in Mauritius.
Where to pedal?
Find out more about the most suitable routes for cycling in Mauritius. Unfortunately bike lanes do not exist on the island. Some roads and trails, including those that cross sugar cane fields, are rarely used by cars and, therefore, are the safest. Some less travelled public roads run along the sea for several kilometres in the south of Mauritius. You may use them but you should remain very prudent. However, it is better to use the trails that will take you in the wilderness.
The best solution to discover Mauritius is to take a guide, who knows his island, points of interest and trails adapted to the bike for half a day or for a whole day.

What vistors say about us
One of the best rides of my life. You will get an adrenaline rush like never before. The track also allows you to experience the wild parts of southern Mauritius. Whether be it riding through sugar cane fields or seeing gorgeous landmarks like the Rochester falls.
The guides are excellent, the attention to safety and detail was comforting and the route of the safari was, well, breathtaking. Halfway through the the trip, you stop at a set of waterfalls and have the opportunity to swim in the pool created by the falls which is wonderfully refreshing after a hot ride through the reserve and sugar cane fields.
We had Jimmy as our guide and took part in the afternoon session. 2hrs is pretty much an optimum time, it’s pretty easy going – ideal for passengers / wives! Good value and there’s an offer of a range of photo’s when you return (100 shots) as a photographer accompanies you.
