We did the two hour Pensacola Bay adventure and it was an absolute blast. We departed from Portofino and went to sand island near Pensacola Pass where the kids played on the giant sand hills.

What a Blast! Our captain picked us up in Pensacola within walking distance of our hotel and took us to the Florabama for some frosty adult beverages. Sight seeing on the way was awesome, a beautiful body of water.

The visit Destin tour is awesome, but be prepared for some riding time. We opted to visit Crab Island for some swimming and playing in the water instead of going to the boardwalk and it was a great decision.

My wife and I did the private Pensacola Bay boat ride while we were visiting Pensacola Beach on our anniversary vacation and it was great. We ask if we could go later and it was not a problem, we went at sunset and the captain took us to a private beach.

We took a wonderful 2 hour boat ride with Captain Bob! We saw a shark, several dolphins, some birds with their babies in their nest, and some cool landmarks! Our tour guide was friendly and helpful with tips on things to see and do.

What To Bring To A Dolphin Cruise

On most Pensacola Beach Dolphin Cruises, life jackets and bottles of water are complimentary.

However, to ensure the most comfortable and enjoyable tour possible, below is a short list of items are great to pack along for the ride:

Go Pro / Camera

You’ll want to capture the amazing wildlife you encounter on your dolphin cruise Pensacola Beach tour!

It’s best to bring a GoPro or a camera that can capture high-speed moments accurately and clearly.

Since you’ll be around water, don’t forget to put your camera gear into a protective waterproof case.

There are a number of companies that make waterproof casings for both Go-Pros and many DSLR and digital cameras.

When not actively using your equipment, place them into a camera bag or backpack for safekeeping.

If there’s one item you shouldn’t leave your hotel without for this tour (other than sunscreen), it’s sunglasses.

The rays of the sun in Florida are more intense than in most other states.

Without your sunnies, you may end up squinting into the sun more than actually spotting dolphins.

Be sure the sunglasses you bring also offer protection from UV sunlight.

Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier

You can stroll out onto the Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier with the purchase of an “observer’s” ticket.

The pier in its entirety spans 1,470 feet out over the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The best time to spot dolphins in the wild is any time the water traffic is low.

When there are fewer boats and people out on the water, dolphins come out to feed and play.

This is usually in the early morning hours, between 10 am and noon , and at dusk (after sunset).

Everyone Loves Destin's Year-Round Climate

One of the main reasons people live and travel to Destin, Florida, is the year-round weather. With the best times for traveling here being April and May, this gives tourists the chance to experience moderate sun and plenty of fun. Furthermore, during this time is when the water is warm, the sun is shining, and the temperatures are comfortable (expect highs in the mid-70s and 80s). Destin is a popular holiday vacation destination on the Florida coast, as hotels offer good deals, and it is a bit quieter. Christmas on the beach, anyone?

Winter is one of the best times to come see Florida, as the weather is near perfect, and the prices for hotels and property rentals are *typically* lower. Flights to and from the Sunshine State may also be cheaper during this time, leading up to Christmas. Spring break will bring more people and higher prices, so it's best to beat that.

The Fascinating History Of The Town

The origins of Destin's nickname as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" are just as interesting as the moniker itself. Originally a "little fishing community" on the Gulf of Mexico, the town of Destin was named after a fisherman named Leonard Destin. Captain Destin carried with him a sense of identity and place from his native New England. For this reason, a miniature town was built that resembled a New England colonial village. In fact, the Henderson State Park Inn, often regarded as Destin's finest resort, is only one of several structures and hotels that has managed to preserve the city's historic character and ambiance.

It’s easy for me, and so many of us who live in and love the Sunshine State, to picture the iconic Florida day. It’s a trip to the beach, getting sand between our toes as we swim, walk, play, lounge, and soak up the sun and salt air.

But that perfect day at the beach could be gone forever if we continue to pump nitrogen pollution into our coastal waters and fuel the growth of harmful algal blooms, such as the red tide that has ravaged large areas of the Florida coast. Despite this, the federal government is looking to add even more nitrogen pollution to our coast by pushing for industrial fish farms off Florida, ignoring the industry’s troubled record of water quality issues caused by huge quantities of fish waste and uneaten fish feed.

A group of about two dozen people from around the country — including me — recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to express our concerns to federal elected officials about industrial fish farms. There were folks who flew in from the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts, as well as Alaska. Commercial fishermen, aquaculture operators who do it right like shellfish and seaweed farmers, chefs, environmental advocates and others, all there with a common message — there’s a right way to produce seafood, and factory farms off our coasts are not it.

Of all the states, Florida is on the front line of the battle to keep industrial fish farms from overwhelming our nation’s coasts. That’s because two fish farms proposed for federal waters off the continental U.S. are both on Florida’s Gulf coast. The first — proposed offshore from Sarasota — has even received permits to build, but is temporarily held up by a legal challenge by conservation and consumer organizations. A second proposed farm off Pensacola Beach is in federal permitting, with public hearings still to come.

The federal government has also proposed a number of what they call “aquaculture opportunity areas” in the Gulf of Mexico, which would designate certain offshore areas as favorable for the location of industrial fish farms. Three of these areas are located off Florida’s west coast in the area offshore from St. Pete south to Naples. When the federal government held a public comment period on the proposal, about 80% of those who commented were opposed.

The race to open the Florida coast to industrial fish farms can be stopped. But first we have to educate our elected officials, who are wrestling with competing bills on aquaculture. The AQUAA Act has been introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate and would give a full greenlight to industrial fish farms in federal waters off Florida and all U.S. coasts. That would mean even more nitrogen pollution for Florida’s coast, exacerbating the problems of harmful algal blooms that the region’s waterways already face.

But there’s also a good bill being considered by Congress, called the Improving ARCTIC Act . This bill would put resources into enhancing local and regional seafood supply chains for both wild-caught and responsibly farmed seafood. In Florida, that means wild fisheries like shrimp, lobster and grouper and farmed seafood like the clams and oysters that are sustainably grown in coastal bays and, unlike fish farms, actually improve water quality through their filtering. The bill would prohibit factory fish farms in federal waters, keeping their legacy of trouble away from Florida’s coast.

That iconic day at a Florida beach depends on clean water, white sand and a fresh sea breeze. Offshore fish farms aren’t part of that mix.
