About Elīna Garanča, soprano Chevron Down

Elīna Garanča was born into a musical family in Riga, Latvia. She began her professional career as a resident artist with the Südthüringischer Staatstheater in Meiningen, followed by the Opera in Frankfurt am Main and Wiener Staatsoper, in each theatre appearing in numerous leading roles. Since then, Elīna has established herself as one of the music world’s major stars through her performances with leading opera companies and symphony orchestras around the world. She has captured critical and popular acclaim for her beautiful voice, intelligent musicianship, and compelling stage portrayals. Among other roles, she is particularly famed for her portrayal as Bizet’s Carmen which she has sung in the majority of leading theatres, like Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía Valencia, or Metropolitan Opera to critical acclaim; the NY Times named her “the finest Carmen in 25 years…”. The Met Carmen production was broadcasted in more than 1,000 movie theatres worldwide and is one of the most viewed and successful “Live in HD” performances of the Metropolitan Opera. Recent highlights include a new production of Samson et Dalila at Staatsoper Berlin with Daniel Barenboim portraying the role of Dalila, her return to the Metropolitan Opera as Marguerite in La damnation de Faust, as well as her long-awaited debut as Kundry in the new production of Wagner’s Parsifal, premiering at the Wiener Staatsoper with Philippe Jordan in April 2021. During the 2021/22 season Elīna made her role debut as La Principessa di Bouillon in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur at the Wiener Staatsoper. In 2022 will Elīna star at various festivals and galas throughout Europe, America and East Asia. In September 2005 Elina became an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon (DG). Her first solo recording ‘Aria Cantilena’ was released in March 2007 to great popular and critical acclaim. Two of her previous albums (‘Romantique’ and ‘Meditation’) both won an ECHO Klassik award. Her album ‘Sol y Vida’ was released in May 2019 and has been unanimously praised by the critics: “Garanča’s selection of flamboyant Mediterranean and Latin American songs is a predictably good fit for her ripe and beguiling timbre.” (Gramophone). In November 2020, she released her first solo recital album, featuring Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben and a selection of Brahms songs followed by ‘Live from Salzburg’ album released in December 2021 documenting two remarkable events at the Salzburg Festival in the summers of 2020 and 2021 with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Christian Thielemann. Elīna has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, greatly cherishing the title of ‘Kammersängerin’ honoured by the Wiener Staatsoper for her devotion to the House, singing over one hundred and sixty performances of eighteen roles since her debut in the House in 2003. Elīna appears regularly at the Metropolitan Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, ROH Covent Garden, Salzburg Festival, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Bayerisches Staatsoper Munich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carnegie Hall New York and Wigmore Hall London and continues to perform in various concerts, festivals and recitals all over the world. For more than ten years, Elīna Garanča and Karel Mark Chichon have been sharing the stage with young, aspiring talents from the opera world as part of their Open-Air concerts in Göttweig and Kitzbühel, Austria. These appearances often started a successful international career of the young protégés. Following this collaboration, the idea of young talent initiative “ZukunftsStimmen” with the support of Raiffeisen Bank was born. It is particularly important to Elīna Garanča that “ZukunftsStimmen” is not just a classical singing competition. Rather, it is about discovering, accompanying, helping at the beginning of a career – and of course about the opportunity to be on stage with Kammersängerin Elīna Garanča and Maestro Karel Mark Chichon during the classical Open-Air concerts in Göttweig Abbey and Kitzbühel. “Working with young artists is a real heartfelt wish for Karel and me. We have already invited many young musical guests to our concerts, who consequently started a world career. Finding these young talents, but also accompanying them through tough classical music business and offering them a helping hand for the next step in their careers, that is a great dream for both of us. A dream coming true.” Says Elīna Garanča about the project. Read more about “ZukunftsStimmen” initiative here

Elina Svitolina says war at home in Ukraine has made playing tennis 'really tough'

Elina Svitolina has set up a foundation for young people affected by the war in Ukraine: "I had time to sit down and understand what I can do and how I can be helpful for my country," the 29-year-old tells the Sky Sports Tennis Podcast

Tuesday 30 April 2024 16:04, UK

Elina Svitolina says competing amid the ongoing war in Ukraine has been difficult, telling the Sky Sports Tennis Podcast that news from her home country "makes me cry".

Svitolina's family has been affected by the war in Ukraine, with her grandmother - who she remains in constant contact with - still based in her hometown of Odesa.

Despite the concern over the well-being of her loved ones back home, the world No 18 managed to reach her third career Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon last year. Svitolina had returned to tennis in April 2023 after the birth of her daughter.

Svitolina: Ukraine is my 'happy place'

While her home country is at war, the 29-year-old uses tennis and her social media platforms to try and impact change for the young people affected by the conflict, also setting up the Elina Svitolina Foundation .

"When I got pregnant, the war just started so I had time to sit down and understand what I can do and how I can be helpful for my country," she said.

"I'm in a safe place, travelling around the world, I have so many opportunities and that's why I try to create projects for the mental health of the kids - this has been the mission for me and as a top athlete in Ukraine it's important to use that."

Svitolina takes great pride in her nation, naming it her "happy place".

"Every time I go back to Ukraine I get a lot of energy from the people," she added.

"For me, when I leave after being in Ukraine, going to tournaments, I feel like I'm energised to give back to them. I want to show good results - they really motivate me a lot.

"I want to make Ukrainians happy, they are struggling right now, so playing tournaments, winning matches and bringing this little positivity to them, that's what drives me."

Ellen DeGeneres breaks silence on talk show's 'devastating' end 2 years ago: Reports

elina tour

Ellen DeGeneres is breaking her silence two years after her long-running talk show ended in the wake of allegations of a toxic workplace .

The former "Ellen DeGeneres Show" host, 66, returned to the stage Wednesday night to kick off Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour with a set at Los Angeles' Largo at the Coronet. According to Rolling Stone and People , DeGeneres took the opportunity to address the elephant in the room: Her absence from the limelight in recent years.

"We were both just laying low for a while," she said of herself and her wife of 15 years, Portia de Rossi , per the outlets.

Reflecting on the backlash she experienced after a Buzzfeed News published a report in July 2020 detailing current and former employees' claims that they faced racism, fear and intimidation while working on the show, DeGeneres summarized: "The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps."

When asked by an audience member whether she was able to dance through tough times, DeGeneres replied, "No, it’s hard to dance when you’re crying. But I am dancing now."

The comedian took a moment to be vulnerable with fans on the first show of her tour.

"I'm making jokes about what happened to me but it was devastating, really," she said. "I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way."

In a monologue commemorating her final episode after 19 years on air, DeGeneres said, "I walked out here 19 years ago, and I said that this is the start of a relationship. And today is not the end of a relationship. It's more of a little break. It’s a, 'You can see other talk shows now. And I may see another audience once in a while.'"

DeGeneres' contract expired in May 2022, when the show aired its final episode, and before this, she spoke publicly about potentially ending the show.

What happened on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' in 2020?

In its report, Buzzfeed News noted that most former employees blamed executive producers and other senior managers for the "day-to-day toxicity." Still, one former employee said DeGeneres "really needs to take more responsibility."

Some said they were fired after taking medical leave or bereavement days to attend funerals, while one claimed she dealt with racist comments, actions and microaggressions.

Upon returning to the show following the bombshell report, DeGeneres told the audience , "I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously, and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected."

Looking back on 'Ellen': Most memorable moments from the show's 19-year-run

She continued, "I know that I'm in a position of privilege and power, and I realize that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show."

In a statement to USA TODAY in 2020, executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly and Andy Lassner said they were "truly heartbroken and sorry to learn" about the claims.

"Over the course of nearly two decades, 3,000 episodes, and employing over 1000 staff members, we have strived to create an open, safe, and inclusive work environment. We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience."

The following month, executive producers Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman  were ousted from the syndicated talk show

According to the comedian's website , five more LA shows are scheduled through early June before DeGeneres goes on the road to other West Coast cities.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
