Fellow Travelers complete release schedule: All episodes and when they arrive

R on Nyswaner's Fellow Travelers made its debut on October 29, 2023, with the first episode being helmed by the creator himself. The series is a television adaptation of Thomas Mallon's novel of the same name that was announced under production in October 2021 and later got greenlit by Showtime in April 2022.

The show eventually got lauded with a positive reception, having been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 94% of 48 critics and also garnering an 8.35/10 rating. How many episodes will there be in Fellow Travelers

Given the details disclosed prior to the show's arrival, Fellow Travelers will be a miniseries comprising eight episodes that will run from October 29 to December 17, 2023. All episodes will be released weekly every Friday on Paramount+ at 12:00 am PT.

What is Fellow Travelers all about

Fellow Travelers showcases Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey's gripping chemistry as Hawkins Fuller and Tim Laughlin in the wake of the Lavender Scare (anti-LGBTQ sentiments) and the Red Scare (fear of communism). Hawkins, aka Hawk, being one of the important members of the State Department, takes his job very seriously.

Showtime has revealed that their upcoming limited series titled Fellow Travelers will be available for streaming on Paramount+ with the Showtime plan , starting from Friday, October 27. Following this, it will also air on regular TV on Sunday, October 29, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime. For viewers in Canada, the series will premiere on Paramount+ on October 27, and for viewers in the UK, Australia, Latin America, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, the premiere will be on October 28.

Fellow Travelers is brought to television by the Academy Award-nominated Ron Nyswaner and has worked on projects like Philadephia and Homeland, and was originally announced back in April 2022. The ensemble cast for the series includes actors such as Matt Bomer , Jonathan Bailey , Jelani Alladin, Allison Williams, and Noah J. Ricketts. Bomer and Nyswaner will also take on executive production roles along with Robbie Rogers and Dee Johnson. Additionally, Daniel Minahan , who has directed shows like Halston and American Crime Story: Versace also serves as an executive producer and will direct the first two episodes. The series is a collaborative effort between Fremantle and Showtime.

Adapted from a novel by Thomas Mallon , Fellow Travelers is an epic, era-spanning story of both love and political intrigue. The story follows the secret relationship between two very different men during the time of McCarthyism in Washington . Matt Bomer portrays the charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who has a successful yet behind-the-scenes role in politics. Despite his avoidance of emotional connections, he meets Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young man full of ideals and religious devotion.

Dark Times in 20th-Century America

Their romantic involvement coincides with the era of Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn, who wage a campaign against those deemed "subversives and sexual deviants." This marks one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history . The series spans four decades, tracing the paths of the main characters - Hawkins, Tim, Marcus, Lucy, and Frankie - as they navigate through events like the Vietnam War protests, the hedonism of the disco era, and the AIDS crisis. Amid these historical events, they also confront personal challenges and growth.

In 2007, author Ron Thomas Mallon published his book Fellow Travelers . And now in 2023, the novel is getting the television adaptation treatment (with two amazing leads to boot!). Are you ready for Fellow Travelers on Paramount+ and Showtime?

Like many Showtime originals, there’s actually going to be two release dates because of the streaming schedule as well. Fellow Travelers premieres Friday, Oct. 27, 2023 on Paramount+ , if you’re subscribed to the Paramount+ with Showtime tier, as well as on TV Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023 at 9 p.m. ET. on Showtime . So it’s up to you whether you’d like to tune in to new episodes on streaming first, or just on television.

All you need to know about Fellow Travelers on Paramount+ and Showtime

Fellow Travelers , created by Ron Nyswaner, has two leading men who will portray a love story – Matt Bomer as Hawkins Fuller and Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey as Tim Laughlin. Joining the duo onscreen are Jelani Alladin as Marcus, Allison Williams as Lucy,  and Noah J. Ricketts as Frankie to round out the cast.

It’s an “epic love story” between two men who are different, so it wouldn’t seem like they’d find romance, per the synopsis. But they do! Taking place across four decades, the series focuses on “charismatic and ambitious” Hawkins (Bomer) and “pious and idealistic Tim (Bailey).” The two are political staffers who fall in love during a difficult time – the 1950s Lavender Scare.

Among it all, Hawkins and Tim also go through the ’60s Vietnam War protests, the drug-fueled era of the ’70s, and the AIDS crisis in the ’80s. Will they be able to handle all these challenges and get through it together? We’re about to find out very soon! I can’t wait for the debut of the new show, and will definitely be tuning in on Friday. I can’t wait until Sunday to start watching! What about you?

Fellow Travelers plot 

Fellow Travelers follows a secret romance between two very different men – the rich Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and the young Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) who is brimming with idealism and religious faith. They start a romance, but Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn have just declared war on ‘subversives and sexual deviants’ so their love could cost them everything. We follow them, alongside three other characters – Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams) and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) - as they cross paths over the next four decades. 

When Hawkins Fuller (American Horror Story’s Matt Bomer), an influential staffer working for a US Senator, meets aspiring politico Tim Laughlin (Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey) at a Washington fundraiser, the attraction between the two men is instant. 

The problem is that the year is 1952, and Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy (For All Mankind’s Chris Bauer) is about to announce his intention to stamp out ‘subversives and sexual deviants’ in the US government.

The drama follows the love story between Hawk and Tim over four turbulent decades including the Vietnam War and AIDS crisis, as they keep getting pulled back into each other’s orbit.

"It’s so compelling to have a powerful attraction between people who view life very differently," says Ron Nyswaner, the show’s creator and executive producer. "They are, in many ways, not suited to each other, but they are powerfully drawn together. And they’re in a very high-pressured, high stakes environment, where their attraction to each other could ruin their lives.?"

In order to maintain his cover, Hawk marries his friend Lucy ( Girls star Allison Williams), who is also the daughter of his boss, Senator Wesley Smith ( My Policeman ’s Linus Roache).

"Lucy and Hawk have this delicious relationship of having known each other since childhood,’ explains Nyswaner. ‘There was always an assumption that they would get married someday - and what’s compelling to me about Lucy is, what does she know about Hawk and what doesn’t she know? What are we willing to not face, if we get to be with somebody we care about? 

"Lucy and Tim are in a similar situation where they both desire this man, and are both willing to give up certain things to have him - but at a certain point, they will pay a price for that.’

The series’ timeline spans from the McCarthy era through to the Aids crisis of the 1980s and runs on a non-linear narrative, which Nyswaner admits occasionally caused some confusion during production.

‘Part of my job on set was to keep everybody clear,’ he recalls. ‘There were times when, in a given day, we were in three different decades - that was really challenging for the designers and the crew!’

Matt Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, who has made a career for himself behind the scenes in politics. 

Crucial to the success of Fellow Travelers was finding two actors with the right chemistry, and Nyswaner explains that Bomer - who also serves as executive producer on the series - and Jonathan Bailey as Tim perfectly captured the longing that keeps their characters coming back to each other.

"Matt has the ability to signal what’s going on inside without having to tell you,’ says Nyswaner. "Hawkins’ inner life is hidden from the world, because it’s too risky to share that with other human beings.

"Tim’s the opposite - his emotions are on the surface, and Jonny does that very well, that incredible nervous energy that he embodies of just wanting something so powerfully. Because of that, I think the audience will want him to get Hawk - even though it’s probably not going to be good for Tim if he does."

Jonathan Bailey is best known for playing Lord Anthony Bridgerton in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton and has also starred in W1A, Hooten and The Lady, Crashing, Broadchurch, Leonardo and Baddiel’s Syndrome . He will star in the upcoming movie Wicked , playing Fiyero.

Episode 1 It's tje 1950s in Washington DC and the atmosphere is febrile as it's the Joseph McCarthy which suspicions of communist infiltration into US society are running high and any accusations could ruin a career in an instant. Hawkins Fuller is a war hero moving up the ladder at the State Department. when Hawk meets religious Tim Laughlin and they begin an affair that puts them in jeopardy.

Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey's Chemistry Is Off the Charts in "Fellow Travelers" Teaser

Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer's romantic period drama already has us swooning, and it's not even out yet. The handsome actors star in the upcoming Showtime miniseries "Fellow Travelers," set in Washington DC in the 20th century and based on Thomas Mallon's novel of the same name. We've gotten a few glimpses at Bailey and Bomer as secret lovers, thanks to a brief teaser trailer released on June 1 and a sneak preview released on Sept. 19.

Bailey will portray Tim Laughlin, a young Fordham University graduate who's committed to his religious beliefs, while Bomer will play Hawkins Fuller, a charismatic State Department official who avoids relationships until meeting Tim. "Girls" alum Allison Williams is also set to star as Lucy Smith, the daughter of a senator and a longtime friend of Hawkins.

Showtime describes the eight-episode limited series as "an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the clandestine romance of two very different men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington." Hawkins and Tim's relationship begins just as US Senator Joseph McCarthy and prosecutor Roy Cohn declare war on "subversives and sexual deviants," and it blossoms as the characters cross paths over the course of four decades — starting in the 1950s, at Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, and later on during the AIDS crisis of the '80s.

It's clear Bailey and Bomer are ecstatic to be starring in the romantic show together. Shortly after their casting news broke last July, Bailey shared a message with fans on Instagram, writing, "Epic story. Incredible team. THRILLED to be on board," to which Bomer commented, "So excited and grateful to be working with you in this!" In an interview with Variety at the 2023 Met Gala, Bailey shared more kind words about his costar, saying, "Matt Bomer is divine. We had a really extaordinary, once-in-a-lifetime moment where we came together and told the love story of two men over 40 years . . . It's so special."

"Fellow Travelers" began production in Toronto last year. Both actors have packed schedules in 2023. Bailey will return as Anthony Bridgerton for "Bridgerton" season three sometime in the (hopefully) near future and has also been filming the "Wicked" film adaptation with Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and more. Bomer's recent projects include superhero series "Doom Patrol," Netflix film "The Boys in the Band," and crime-drama series "The Sinner."

As a fitting kickoff to Pride Month, Showtime on Thursday unveiled the first footage from its forthcoming Matt Bomer – Jonathan Bailey period love story  Fellow Travelers . 

The teaser trailer — which was first glimpsed on  EW.com  (and can be viewed above) — offers flashes of the decades-spanning romance between Bailey’s earnest and optimistic Tim Laughlin and Bomer’s charismatic and intimacy-avoidant “Hawk” Fuller.

Based on Thomas Mallon’s novel, and adapted by Homeland/Ray Donovan vet Ron Nyswaner, the eight-episode drama charts the pair’s 35-year relationship, from their first meeting in the McCarthy-era ’50s through to the AIDS epidemic in the ’80s.

Per Vanity Fair , the sex scenes in Fellow Travelers between White Collar alum Bomer and Bridgerton star Bailey will mark “uncharted territory for mainstream” television.

“Not that it will be shocking to people, but I hope when people watch it, they’re like, ‘Oh, wow. They really went for it,’” exec producer Robbie Rogers told the mag. Added Bailey: “I will be so interested to see how people respond to it. To me, being queer also is about, as two men, how you negotiate your giving of your body to the other person. That is something that I’ve always yearned to see properly done because I know how extraordinary it is to experience it.”

Fellow Travelers is slated to premiere this fall on Showtime.

With two of the industry’s most prominent LGBTQ+ actors and an equally impressive ensemble cast, Fellow Travelers is one of the most anticipated new series of the year. From the plot to where and watch you can watch it, here’s everything you need to know about the Showtime/Paramount Plus miniseries.

What is the plot?

B ased on the novel of the same name from Thomas Mallon, Fellow Travelers is described as “an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington.”

Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey will play Tim Laughlin, a “young man brimming with idealism and religious faith” who is optimistic about a post-WWII world. His life changes when he meets Matt Bomer’s character Hawkins Fuller, who “maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes” political career. 

“They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.

“Over the course of four decades, we follow our five main characters – Hawk, Tim, Marcus Lucy, and Frankie – as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair , Bomer and Bailey discussed the series and its powerful story. The former revealed that Fellow Travelers was “marinating with Ron for a solid decade before I ever came on board. Ron had an almost religious zeal about this project, this world and these characters that just washed over everyone involved, and made it the profound experience that it was.”

Bailey opened up about the series’ intense and emotional sex scenes, which he described as a “meticulous examination of power”: “The nuance of a complicated, volatile queer relationship is the power balance – and that is what is amazing about Tim and Hawk.”

Bomer added: “There’s a level of trust and intimacy that’s even more valuable when society is against you. You keep your secrets together.”

The cast and crew?

Directed by Ron Nyswaner, the eight-episode drama also stars Jelani Alladin ( The Walking Dead: World Beyond ) as Marcus, Allison Williams ( Get Out ) as Lucy, Noah J. Ricketts ( American Gods ) as Frankie, Linus Roache ( My Policeman ) as Senator Wesley Smith, Will Brill ( The OA ) as Roy Cohn, Chris Bauer ( True Blood ) as Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and Christine Horne ( Lost Girl ) as Jean Kerr.

Nyswaner directed the screenplays for Philadelphia (1993) and My Policeman (2022), with the former earning him an Academy Award nomination. Bomer and Nyswaner will executive produce Fellow Travelers with former American soccer player Robbie Rogers, while Daniel Minahan will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

The release date?

The series is due for release 27 October in the US and 28 October in the UK.

Where can I watch it?

Fellow Travelers will air in the U.S. on Showtime. As for the UK and other international territories, the series will stream exclusively on Paramount Plus.

Showtime has released the first teaser for its new limited series Fellow Travelers , created by Ron Nyswaner and starring Matt Bomer, Jonathan Bailey, Jelani Alladin, Allison Williams, and Noah J. Ricketts. The eight-episode drama, executive produced by Bomer and Nyswaner, follows the clandestine romance of two men in McCarthy-era Washington.

Based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, Fellow Travelers is an epic love story and political thriller set against the backdrop of the McCarthy era. Charismatic Hawkins Fuller (Bomer) meets young idealist Tim Laughlin (Bailey), and their romance unfolds amidst the dark period of anti-communist hysteria. The series spans four decades, exploring the lives of Hawkins, Tim, and three other main characters as they navigate various historical events and personal struggles.

Co-produced by Fremantle and Showtime, Fellow Travelers will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime later this fall. The series is executive produced by Robbie Rogers and Dee Johnson, with Daniel Minahan directing the first two episodes.
