Lanzarote Tours FAQS

At OkLanzarote we offer you:

  • The best selection of tours and activities for guaranteed satisfaction.
  • Personalized treatment . Our Customer Service will be available every day of the year from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for any questions or incidents.
  • A leisure guide to Lanzarote when you book with us.
  • Best price guaranteed . You won’t find the same excursions for less.
  • Complete information on each excursion and the closest pick-up to your accommodation.
  • Guaranteed satisfaction as shown by our clients’ comments and evaluations.
  • More than 10 years of experience in the Canary Islands.

For the bus excursions, when making your reservation and entering the data of your accommodation or address, the closest pick-up place and time to your accommodation will appear automaticall y. A photo of the collection point and a map with directions on how to get to the collection point will appear on the reservation voucher.

We do not offer pick-ups at all hotels to speed up the pick-up time for all clients.

In the other excursions, once you make your reservation, we’ll contact you to provide you with the closest pick-up time and place to your accommodation.

In any case, in the Frequently Asked Questions of almost all the excursions, the pick-up and drop-off times appears depending on the area where you’re staying.

Reservations are always made online , neither by phone nor in person.

During the booking process we’ll tell you how much to pay, since in most cases, unless it’s a group of more than 4 people, a guarantee has to be paid when booking, and the rest can be paid in cash, at the meeting point.

There are basically two payment methods: 1.- Paypal and 2.- Credit or debit card.

If you want to guarantee a spot, book as far in advance as possible as we can fill all the places for the day you’re interested in at any time. Additionally, if you cancel as far in advance as possible, we will refund you for the amount paid as a guarantee.

Even though you can visit a large part of the monuments and emblematic places within Lanzarote on your own, we recommend excursions with guided tours for various reasons:

  • To avoid the long queues that form when entering some CACTs.
  • An official guide will give you all the information about the island and the places you visit and will answer any questions you may have. That way, you’ll get the most out of the tour.
  • You’ll travel in comfortable buses, always being able to admire the landscape.
  • In the Timanfaya National Park visit, even if you go by yourself, in addition to having to buy the park entrance ticket, you’ll have to pay to take the bus tour along the volcano highway. You can’t do it on your own.
  • We’ll pick you up and drop you off back at your accommodation or close to it.
  • You’ll be able to see more things in less time. The routes are planned to maximize our time and to visit the greatest number of places, while always having more than enough time to see them.

In addition to guided visits to the most impressive places in Lanzarote, we also offer excursions to La Graciosa, boat trips to Isla de Lobos and a day trip to Fuerteventura.

Children can do all the tours, but we have prepared a list of the best tours for families with children in Lanzarote .

Yes, please check the best tours available for cruise passengers here.

Here are the excursions you can do depending on the day of the week.

Day trips and excursions in Lanzarote

Enjoy the best Lanzarote excursions in Lanzarote. Check complete information of each tour with pictures, reviews, maps and details of the route. Book with the best price guaranteed and enjoy some of the most beautiful moments with our day trips.

Lanzarote is like a large theme park full of attractions that are worth visiting through the different organized excursions that we propose. In our tours, you will find the main places to see and visit in Lanzarote so that you make the most of your stay on the island.

For your convenience, all of the tours have pick-up points in the tourist centres of Costa Teguise , Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca , in addition to a pick-up point in the capital, Arrecife .

We have divided the excursions into three main categories: bus tours, boat trips and jeep excursions.

You can do the tours with children , alone, with your partner or with a group of friends.

The bus excursions are the most popular for comfortably getting to know the island’s most emblematic places. The tours take place in modern buses driven by expert drivers. The guides who accompany you are official guides who will illustrate the history, culture and stories of the landmarks throughout the trip.

The variety offered by these tours allows you to visit the most impressive places on the island in just a few days. Because most of our routes combine the different landmarks, we can divide the itineraries into three groups:

In the volcano tours ,we will visit Timanfaya National Park , the island’s great attraction and most-visited place. Most of Lanzarote’s volcanoes are concentrated here. On these tours, you can camel ride , go on a tour along the volcano road and see for yourself, through different experiments, why this park is also known as the Fire Mountains.

In the cave excursions , we will visit two magical places on the island, two volcanic tubes created by the Corona Volcano where art and nature have been combined: Los Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes.

You can also visit other works of Cesar Manrique in this unique island of the Canary Islands: the Jardín de cactus ( Cactus Garden ), el monumento al campesino (Monument to the Farmer), el Mirador del Río ( River Lookout), Lagomar, the house where Manrique lived (which is now the headquarters for the Cesar Manrique Foundation ).

On our bus tours through Lanzarote we will also see places as outstanding as the Green Lagoon, the Salinas de Janubio, Teguise, the Hervideros or La Geria.

Day trips from Lanzarote

We also offer the possibility of doing a day trip from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura in order to explore the most important places to the north of the island.

On the boat trips , you can choose the option that suits you best in terms of the environment, route, type of boat, schedule and location of departure. You can do boat trips to Papagayo Beach , a La Graciosa tour from Lanzarote , or a Lobos island tour to enjoy a spectacular sunset, see dolphins or do an aquatic activity like kayaking or snorkelling.

The Jeep safaris are ideal for getting to know the island and enjoying an adventure at the same time. On these Jeep routes, you can visit places that are difficult for other vehicles to access, such as those on dirt roads or that are very narrow and/or winding. Visiting Playa de Famara, Playa de Papagayo, or Santa Sport or walking inside a volcano can only be done on these Jeep tours.

In short, Lanzarote has many sites to discover and visit, impressive places that we make available to you with our different excursions so that you can enjoy them with the greatest guarantees, comfort and safety.

We only hope that upon finishing any of our tours, you return to your accommodations with the satisfaction of having enjoyed one of the best days of your stay in Lanzarote, full of unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

  • FionaC74 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Cesar Manrique in Lanzarote This was an excellent all-day tour around 5 important landmarks created by the artist. Paul, the tour guide was excellent, switching seamlessly between Spanish and English and always open to answering questions. On the way between sites he explained the history and culture of the island as well as relating with enthusiasm interesting facts about Manrique himself. The only disappointment was the buffet lunch which didn't cater for vegetarians. However we made up for it with delicious apple pie and coffee at the Mirador del Rio. Read more Written 19 April 2024
  • jenimcclean 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Car didn’t turn up. I ordered a car for an early pick up to return to the airport- I didn’t think I would find a taxi at the rank at 5am so paying the extra to book in advance was my only option. I got a confirmation that specifically said not to contact them, they were coming. They emailed the day before to confirm they were coming, and again said not to contact them. They didn’t come. They didn’t phone. They didn’t respond to email or WhatsApp. I ended up running half a mile to the taxi rank, after we should have checked in at the airport. Would never risk it again. • CFNB 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Turned away even with a ticket - don't bother Be prepared to drive all the way here (a long drive if you're staying in the south west if the island) only to be turned away and told to come back another day, with no refund on your ticket. They don't offer timed slots (is it really that difficult to do that?) so youve no way of knowing if the sole small car park will be full. It's a ploy to force you to go with the tour bus excursions (who are never turned away). Don't bother unless you've time to waste. Read more Written 9 April 2024
  • 6uka 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles No child seats despite specifically confirming We booked a transfer from the airport to our hotel on Lanzarote, prepaid, specifically left a note to bring child seats for our 3 and 6yo. Then additionally confirmed via chat that the seats for our children would be brought. Guess what - our plane was barely 20mins late to land and there was no car with child seats waiting!!!! They just offered us a regular taxi instead (out of the taxi queue) or extra half an hour wait. We couldn’t wait as it was already a late evening and had to take it. What’s the point of requesting seats and why would they confirm them? They also refused to give any money back despite failing to provide the confirmed level of service. Don’t trust them to bring your children seats! Read more Written 4 April 2024
  • triciasL7457IP 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing sights The tour is fascinating. We went on a coach visiting Timanfaya National Park - complete with geysers and very hot stones. Also we visited a green lake on the coast with fantastic scenery. Passed through Teguise but did not get out of the coach. Had lunch at a restaurant on a fixed price deal but the food was disappointing and I'd advise you to take a packed lunch. It was expensive but worth the visit but go on an organised coach trip and private cars are stuck in long traffic queues. Read more Written 4 April 2024
  • JoLow 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very informative and great tour We thoroughly enjoyed this short tour of Southern Lanzarote. Our guide Paul's knowledge of his native island was exceptional and he was also very amusing. The visit to Timanfaya was excellent and the scenery spectacular. Huge thanks to our driver who navigated his way around the very narrow roads amongst the lava fields with great care. We look forward to booking another trip when we return in November to learn more about this beautiful island. Read more Written 29 March 2024
  • Mark S 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Rubbish service, waste of money. Late to collect us at airport. No apology from female representative or driver. By the time they arrived most of the people on our flight had left which kind of defeated the object of getting away quickly. On the return trip morning we received telephone and e mail messages asking us to share the minibus back to the airport with another family. How is this a private transfer? We reluctantly agreed on the agreement that we would receive a partial refund. Guess what? The driver and representative knew nothing about it and the guy in the office denied knowing anything. Whole trip was prepaid upon arrival so no way of withholding payment. They therefore got paid twice for the one trip. Looking at earlier reviews this appears to be a regular scam. Lesson is, if you want a private transfer don't use First minute. You might just as well get the transfer coach and save the 50 euros Read more Written 25 March 2024
  • 702angelinew 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles AWFUL service! Do not use!! Awful Service! Ordered and paid for private taxi (car), got a minibus. Driver got lost en-route to our apartment as he said our accommodation was new, but was built 4 years ago! Did not arrive to collect us for our airport transfer at the end of the holiday. No contact, no apology. Sent many emails when we got back a few days ago asking for a refund and an apology, heard nothing. But they soon sent many emails to me before we left for our holiday in Lanzarote as they said i had not paid online for the transfers. I had indeed paid and had a credit card receipt to prove it. Use another company. Yes, this is the cheapest company I saw online, but do you really want to chance not getting the service you paid for. TERRIBLE!!! AND the driver was crazy! Tailgating the car in front so so close, i was bricking it! He was waving his arms about and blabbering on in Spanish. Really not impressed with the whole experience. Read more Written 20 March 2024
  • dorothyb916 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Complaints ignored with no response. I was holidaying in Lanzarote(Puerto de Carmen) last month and wish to draw your attention to a problem our party of 5 had on one of First Travel excursions. We booked one of the tours(The Grand Tour) on Tuesday 20/02/2024 for 5 people on the main strip in Puerto de Carmen. Pick up point was La Isla Ye El Mar Boutique at around 9.40am The bus arrived around 30 minutes late around 10.10 and we proceeded to pay by card we tried 4 cards debit and credit cards which were not accepted by the machine all these cards had been tried on the holiday several times without any problems. The balance to pay was 260 euros for the party. Because of this we were told that we would pay later. On checking with at least 7 or 8 couples on the bus the same problem had occurred with them thus creating a late bus most couples were forced to pay cash.It was obvious at this point there was a problem with the the card reader of the guide. We continued just out of town the bus stopped and the guide asked myself and one other into an office and another card reader was produced by presumably another guide similar to the one used by the guide. The same thing happened again and both myself and the other gentleman were directed to An ATM outside the building to withdraw the relevant cash. After this the bus proceeded now around probably 45minutes behind schedule. The cost of the ATM to me resulted in a rate of 1.01 euros to the pound. The debit card rate through my card would have been 1.165 euros to the £ this incurred a loss to me around £34.00 When the bus stopped for lunch we were informed that the time would be cut to 40/45 minutes obviously due to earlier problems. We were also informed on arrival that lunch was a set price of 12 euros or nothing This had not been informed by the selling agent who said we could buy to suit without the full buffet . We walked to cafe on the edge of the car park and service was slow food had to be gulped down We did not want the buffet due to dietary requirements of the group. I note this was a problem of the selling agent and not First travel . The next day we went into another selling agent near the port to book another trip we informed him of our troubles he phoned first travel direct giving my mobile number to resolve the problem. No call back was received. We again went to same agent several days again he phoned First Travel to call me back. Again I received no call back. I may add that the lady guide was excellent and the trip was generally good however I have asked for some compensation due to the above. In addition to the above calls I have also emailed first minute travel 3 times without a reply which is not a good advert for the island or First travel excursions. Was at the pickup point 1/2 hour early, but the coach never arrived. Got in touch with the Tour operator (First Minute) who informed us that Excursions Lanzarote had booked 9th May. Tried to call Travelon World (website says 7 days a week - actually only Monday to Friday). Tried the chat (painfully slow). Absolute rubbish customer service. Book with them at your peril. • brianpX8008EI 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Tour Great, shame about bus operations…… Firstly the tour itself was brilliant, think it was Roland who was our guide and very good he was too, and the driver was second to none considering the roads round the volcano. My only complaint was this, firstly as we were in playa blanca we waited at the designated bus stop for 30 minutes, we were 10 mins early. Was told the bus was late due to pick up from port as ferry was late. Considering we stayed not five minutes from the port we could see the comings and goings of ferries as they arrive and the ferry was there. Secondly travelled to a bus terminal telling us we were to go on different coach for our tour, because of guests from other parts of the island. Then we were only let on the coach due to the areas that were to be dropped off first, so as being in Playa Blanca we ended up at the back of the coach. Now what makes it even worse when we travelled back to resort, we ended up changing to a smaller one after we pulled in to Playa del Carmen. Playa Blanca guests got the rough end of the stick that day. Would recommend to tour operator that people from their respective area, being Playa Blanca or Playa del Carmen etc have their own coach if it’s for the day tour. Too much messing around in my opinion that day. Would I recommend Tour yes, coach operation a no. Read more Written 6 March 2024
  • Anna7789 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A brilliant day out We really enjoyed our tour and had a great day out exploring the sights of Lanzarote, the highlight of the day being the lunar drive through the volcanoes!! An absolutely amazing experience!! Our guide was very knowledgable and very strict with time keeping which ensured that we made the best use of our time and didn’t miss anything. We would have liked a bit longer at the green lake though, as we’d have liked to go down onto the black sand beach. The wine tasting was fun and a welcome rest stop on the way up North, if a bit rushed! We took our own lunch and enjoyed sitting out the sunny terrace, but my daughter did do the camel ride and really enjoyed it. We found the first part of the day where everyone was picked up overly long, although we were prepared for it and had been told what to expect upon booking. It just got really tedious. For us the bus felt too crowded and squashed at full occupancy, but it was worth a bit of discomfort to see so much in one day! Read more Written 28 February 2024

  • TanechkaVas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The whole day tour to Zvenigorod, the country side of Moscow, with Anton. We organized that tour from Australia well ahead of time, planning to visit Zvenigorod with big group of extended family and friends with teens as part of our New Year trip to Moscow. The communication with Anton, our guide, was excellent during the time since booking till the excursion day. The actual day was organized very good, taken into account mixed group of adults, born in USSR and kids, born in Australia. Anton organized our activities to be suitable for all of us. As adults, we were enjoyed country side during winter and Monastery's quietness and ability to jump to the cold "holy" water at one of the oldest Monasteries of Russia - Savva Storoghevskiy Man Monastery. That was the most amazing and nearly magical experience! Kids were enjoyed of snow and treats Anton provide for us, including buisquits and Sbiten'. We also visited very interesting Museum of Russian desserts and learn a lot about ancient russian sweets; have a look on our past in the Museum of USSR and bought some yammie things to enjoy later. In general we all agree that our tour to Zvenigorod with Anton was enjoyable and educational; well organized and unforgettable. We wish we would have more time there! We would recommend such trip to everyone wishing to see Russia's country side. Read more Written January 17, 2020

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .

Victims of Nazi concentration camps built in British Channel Islands finally being counted

By Holly Williams

April 21, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

The names Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald are infamous as the scene of atrocities -- concentration camps, run by Adolf Hitler's notorious SS.

But what you may be surprised to learn, as we were, is that two Nazi concentration camps were established on British soil in the Channel Islands, around 80 miles from the British mainland. The islands lie just off the coast of France, became possessions of the English crown around a thousand years ago – and were occupied by Germany for nearly five years during World War II. Even in the United Kingdom many people don't know about the camps -- and as we discovered, exactly what happened there is hotly disputed.

Holly Williams: It's pretty well hidden, isn't it?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah, well, if you--

Holly Williams: It's all overgrown.

Marcus Roberts: If you didn't know how to get here, you wouldn't easily stumble across it.

Marcus Roberts: This was a sort of back entrance…

There's not much left of the Third Reich's Lager Sylt concentration camp… on the windswept island of Alderney -- about three miles long and one and a half wide – nature is gradually swallowing up its crumbling concrete walls.

Holly Williams: And the camp's up here…--

Marcus Roberts: These take you straight into the-- the camp.

Holly Williams: Wow.

Marcus Roberts is an Oxford-educated amateur historian who runs heritage tours. He's spent years researching this forgotten chapter in British history.

Marcus Roberts:  So undoubtedly if you wanted to put-- a pin on the map, you could say, "This is where the Holocaust happened on British sovereign territory."

Marcus Roberts and Holly Williams

When Germany invaded France in 1940, the British government calculated that the Channel Islands had no strategic value – and gave them up without a fight. Nearly all of the residents of Alderney decided to evacuate before the German troops arrived. On the empty island, the Germans set up two concentration camps – as well as labor camps. They brought in prisoners of war and forced laborers to build giant fortifications that still survive today -- part of Hitler's Atlantic wall to protect against Allied attack. A minority of them were Jewish – others were from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Spain.

Holly Williams: I understand this was called the Tunnel of Death?

Marcus Roberts: Yes. It was notorious in the memory of prisoners. On two occasions, they were forced to cram in here in an apparent rehearsal for their own death.

After the war, in 1945, the British military investigated the camps, and put the death toll on Alderney in the low hundreds. Some of those who lost their lives were buried under this plot of land. But Marcus Roberts and others argue that more than 10,000 must have died on the island – based on controversial calculations about the size of the labor force needed to build the fortifications. Roberts told us it's because he's Jewish that he's determined to count all of the dead.

Marcus Roberts: There is the-- the Jewish instinct to, you know, leave no one behind

Holly Williams: You're trying to make sure that all the Jewish dead are counted?

Marcus Roberts: Remembered. If you don't remember a life, it's as if they've never lived at all.

Most academics dispute Roberts' estimate of the death toll, but partly as a result of those disagreements, last year the British government appointed a team of researchers to comb through archives across Europe, and more accurately count the number of prisoners who died on Alderney. Dr. Gilly Carr -- an archaeologist at Cambridge University -- is coordinating the review.

Holly Williams: Why is this just a document search, not a dig?

Gilly Carr: It is likely that some of the people in mass graves were Jewish. And according to Halakha or Jewish law, you cannot disturb the dead. But the second reason is that according to prisoner statements, some people were dumped at sea or thrown off cliffs. What are we going to do? Dig up the entire island? Well, we can't do that.

The researchers are drawing on rich material. The Nazis were meticulous record keepers -- and British archives contain first hand testimonies from survivors.

Holly Williams: Look at this. "We were beaten with everything they could lay their hands on: with sticks, spades, pickaxes."

Gilly Carr: It sounds absolutely ghastly.

Dr. Gilly Carr

Holly Williams: "On certain days, five to six, up to 10 men died."

Dr. Carr told us there's no evidence that gas chambers were used on Alderney -- but there were summary executions, and the prisoners built the Nazi fortifications on starvation rations.

Holly Williams: Were they taken to Alderney to be worked to death?

Gilly Carr: They were certainly seen as expendable. The aim was to get every ounce of work out of them. And if they died, it didn't matter, and that was kind of perhaps "expected."

Holly Williams: They were disposable human beings.

Gilly Carr: Yes. Yes.

Holly Williams: How did your father end up in Alderney?

At a pub in the Channel Islands, we met Gary Font. His father – Francisco Font – fought on the losing side in the Spanish Civil War, was arrested in France, handed over to the Germans, and sent to a concentration camp on Alderney. Francisco survived, and later married a British woman -- Gary's mother.

Holly Williams and Gary Font

Gary Font: He witnessed-- the execution of a young Soviet boy who decided to leave the working detail and to change his footwear. So he started to pick up these paper bags, and wrap them 'round his feet, and then tie them with string. And a SS guard had seen him do this, and walked up to him and-- and shot him-- point-blank range.

Gary told us his father's experiences left him scarred.

Gary Font: I saw the emotion on his face. Yeah, it's a tough one.

Holly Williams: Do you think that emotion came from-- that he had survived the War in Spain, and survived the camp here?

Gary Font: Yeah, exactly. That was the first time I realized, "Wow, you know, this man has a deep-rooted emotion inside of him that he could never get out."

The British government's effort to get the truth out – by recounting the dead – was commissioned by Lord Pickles – a former cabinet minister and now the U.K.'s envoy for post-Holocaust issues.

Lord Pickles: The figures vary, not by a few hundred, not by a few thousand, by-- by tens of thousands.

Holly Williams: So it was the controversy that prompted you to commission the review?

Lord Pickles: Yes. It seemed to me that the sensible thing was, "Well, okay. Let's do that-- this in the open. Let's do it fully transparent.

He's also asked the researchers to put names to as many of those killed as they can.

Lord Pickles: If you remember them as individuals, then it's another blow against Hitler. Hitler wanted to eradicate the memory of people.

Lord Pickles

Holly Williams: So this is kind of an ongoing fight against Hitler and his ideas?

Lord Pickles: Hitler's evil hand still continues to affect-- to affect Europe and to affect the world.

But it's taken nearly 80 years for the British government to re-examine what happened on Alderney -- and to make its report public. The official British investigations in 1945 were classified for decades. And unlike the trials of Nazi officials in Nuremberg -- the British authorities failed to prosecute a single German officer who worked on Alderney – even though many of them ended up in British prisoner of war camps.

Holly Williams: I mean just to be clear, these are possible war criminals. The British government has gathered evidence against-- against them. And they are in British custody.

Gilly Carr: Yes, they are at this point, yes.

Holly Williams: A sort of slam-dunk case?

Gilly Carr: You'd have thought.

That's led Marcus Roberts and others to claim that the British government tried to cover-up the extent of the atrocities on Alderney. Dr. Carr told us that could be true -- but one key document from the British War Office investigation that may explain why there were no prosecutions is missing.

Gilly Carr: It could have been shredded-- decades ago as part of, "What do we need these files for anymore?

Holly Williams: But could it also have been shredded for more nefarious purposes?

Gilly Carr: I have no idea. In order for me to say there was a cover-up, I want to see the decisions taken. I want to look through those steps and to make up my own mind.

Holly Williams: Why might the British government have tried to cover up or whitewash what happened on Alderney and-- and maybe more broadly, on the Channel Islands?

Gilly Carr: There are some things that-- that happened that might not-- that the British government might not necessarily have wanted a wider audience to know about.

Those things – once feared too troubling for the broader public – happened on three of the other Channel Islands -- where most residents did not evacuate before the occupation. When the Germans arrived, the locals mostly cooperated – often with little choice. Hitler's portrait was hung outside this cinema on the island of Guernsey. Nazi propaganda showed the British police working for German troops. And British newspapers on the islands printed orders from Berlin.

Holly Williams: This is a British newspaper. And it's got the swastika on top.

Linda Romeril: That's right.

Researching Channel Islands history

At the official archives on the island of Jersey, Linda Romeril showed us how British officials implemented Nazi policies -- asking Jewish residents to identify themselves, and then confiscating their assets.

Linda Romeril: There was a huge amount of requisitioning of people's houses, people's property during the occupation period.

But some resisted -- risking punishment to paint anti-nazi graffiti, and illegally listening to British news on the radio.

Jenny Lecoat: That's my great aunt Louisa. I suspect that she was probably quite steely.

One member of the resistance was Louisa Gould -- who hid an escaped Russian prisoner in her home for nearly two years. Jenny Lecoat told us when her great aunt Louisa was finally caught, she was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany.

Holly Williams: She was killed in a Nazi gas chamber?

Jenny Lecoat: She was gassed to death, yeah.

Holly Williams: After the occupation, did the British government get in touch with your family to talk about what Louisa had done during the occupation, and about her murder by the Nazis?

Jenny Lecoat: The British government, I think, were kind of ashamed. They were horrified it had happened, and they didn't really want to get too involved in what had gone on there.

Holly Williams: Not wanting to talk about the resistance? Or not wanting to talk about the occupation at all?

Jenny Lecoat: Well, it was such a mixed picture. There were people who had resisted the Germans as much as resistance was possible within a tiny, nine-by-five-mile island. And there were also people who'd collaborated. Some people had betrayed their own country. The only possible legislation was treason, which was still a hanging offense. They didn't wanna get into that. That was the confusing, messy, dirty mixed picture of-- of the Channel Islands occupation.

Holly Williams and Jenny Jenny Lecoat

We'll learn more about that messy, dirty history when the British government's review of the death toll at the camps on Alderney is published next month. But it's unlikely to satisfy everyone.

Marcus Roberts: Some kind of-- ap-- apology and, you know, moral recompense would be helpful.

Holly Williams: You-- you want the British government to apologize--

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. I'd like--

Holly Williams: --for not having prosecuted alleged war criminals?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. So I think it would be appropriate for them to recognize what should have been done, didn't happen.

The horrors carried out on this tiny, remote island are difficult to imagine... the victims were silenced and buried… but now, nearly eight decades later, they're finally being counted.

Paris 2024 Olympics: How to plan a last-minute trip, from Games tickets to accommodation

If you are kicking yourself for not bagging tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympics when they first went on sale, all is not lost. A travel expert tells Sky News how sports fans can plan a last-minute trip this summer.

As the Paris Olympics draw closer, the hype is increasing - and it's only going to build from here.

If you are kicking yourself for not bagging tickets when they first went on sale, all is not lost.

There are still ways you can get to Paris to see the Games.

Sky News talks to a travel expert to bring you all you need to know about securing your last-minute trip.

Can I still get tickets for the Olympics?

Yes, it is still possible to get tickets for the Games.

More than 250,000 tickets went on sale on 17 April to mark 100 days until the opening of the Games.

This is the last ticket sale, but tickets are still available for dozens of events.

The first sale involved a lottery and timeslots to buy packs of tickets for events.

In the final stretch of ticket sales, things are a lot simpler.

Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis and you can see the availability for different events in real time on the website.

While a lot of the final tickets on sale are pretty pricey, there is still the chance to bag a bargain.

Almost 20,000 tickets were put on sale for €24 and it is still possible to get tickets to see football for this price.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are ticket and hospitality packages available that will set you back hundreds of Euros.

What about the Paralympics?

The Paralympic Games will take place from 28 August to 8 September and there are still tickets available from €15.

The booking works the same as for the Olympics - first-come, first-served, with the remaining tickets now available on the website.

Avoid the scammers

Don't get caught out by scammers - make sure you only buy tickets through the official Paris 2024 ticketing website.

It's not too late to book - but don't wait

While the start of the Games is fast approaching, it's not too late to plan a trip - but you should "get booking ASAP", Jessica Dante, travel expert at Love and London, tells Sky News.

The Eurostar is not as "wildly priced" as you might expect, she says, with return fares available for the first week of the Games for under £200 - and the same is true of budget airlines.

But, Ms Dante cautions, "that will invariably only continue to go up" - so book soon rather than hold out for a last-minute deal.

Could there be last-minute deals on accommodation?

Don't bank on it, Ms Dante says.

"I'm always in the camp of just book something so you have it. If something else pops up closer to the time then fine, you can try to make a switch if you've got something that you can cancel.

"But there's also the chance that something might not pop up that's going to be in your price range as well."

While there could be a small wave of accommodation deals open up as people cancel, a lot of accommodation will be non-refundable at least a couple of weeks before the Games, so any cancellations are likely to still be fairly far in advance, she says.

Tips for booking accommodation

There is still "decent availability" for hotels, she says, although some popular spots are already booked up.

Unsurprisingly, cost has a lot to do with location - so look away from central areas and places close to Olympic locations if you are looking to save money.

"The flip side of that is it then means that you're probably going to have to deal with taking the metro and you'll have to pay for the inflated cost of the rides."

The price of metro tickets will almost double during the Games, from €2.10 (£1.80) to €4 (£3.40).

But the surcharge on public transport is unlikely to match the price difference on a more central hotel. Ms Dante advises looking at suburban areas or the outskirts of the city.

What about staying in another town?

Staying in another town entirely and travelling to Paris for events is one option.

But you should consider the pros and cons carefully, Ms Dante says.

There is a looming threat of train strikes. The CGT public servants union has announced plans to strike during the Olympics, which could mean many transport workers walking out.

If you are staying outside Paris, that could scupper your plans to easily travel into the city.

Even if there are not strikes, trains into Paris are likely to be crowded, Ms Dante says.

"You do have to kind of balance that and just be prepared that you might have some difficulty."

Passengers walk in the Part-Dieu train station during a railway strike, in Lyon, central France, Wednesday, July 6, 2022. A strike by railway workers demanding higher pay amid cost of living increases is interrupting train service in France. National railway company SNCF said about one in four high-speed trains was canceled on Wednesday. It says regional service such as suburban trains in the Paris region is experiencing disruptions. Can you go to the Olympics and avoid Paris entirely?

The Games may be headlined as Paris 2024, but there are events taking place across the country - and the surfing is even in Tahiti.

The cities of Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Nice, Bordeaux, Nantes and Marseille will host events.

The Olympic ticketing site allows you to filter available events by location, so if you are keen to give Paris a miss you can seek out what is happening in other places.

"They're going to be a little bit less popular than stuff that's right in the centre of Paris, so I think that's a really good option," Ms Dante says.

Consider the Paralympics

The Paralympics often gets overshadowed by the Olympics, but it's a great option if you want to experience the Games, Ms Dante says.

"It's going to be a little bit less crowded, the pricing will be better, probably a little bit more of a relaxed experience."

Is it worth going to Paris if you don't have tickets to the Games?

Maybe there are no tickets left in your price range, or your favourite event is sold out - is it worth planning a trip to Paris anyway?

"Definitely," according to Ms Dante. "This whole summer it's going to be really buzzy there."

A lot of locals will leave the city, she says. It's French tradition in the summer, but the exodus is likely to be even bigger this year as Parisians flee the crowds - meaning some areas could end up being quieter than normal.

Attractions away from the main Olympic sites could also be quieter than normal, she says.

How to make the most of your trip

If you are keen to combine cultural activities with sporting ones, consider booking a guided tour to big attractions, Ms Dante advises.

That way, you have got your ticket secured and the tour guides will be up to speed on any road closures or access changes that could make your visit more tricky.

Also keep in mind that there will be a lot of security measures in place and getting around the city will take longer than normal.
