There’s so much to experience in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Some ideas for fun activities in the city include the Franklin Institute and viewing the Liberty Bell. There’s also Fairmont Park with the Please Touch Museum and Smith Playground.

A bit further outside the city is Legoland Discovery Center Philadelphia . This is a LEGO-themed play place with a cute, interactive train that takes you into the Discovery Center. In the general Philadelphia area, there’s also Sesame Place . Sesame Place is focused on younger children and has many dry rides and water rides along with two, family-friendly roller coasters.

Kilgore Falls Day Trip

Kilgore Falls is located in Rocks State Park, which is just over the Pennsylvania border in Maryland. During summer weekends and holidays, it’s essential to reserve a parking spot that is adjacent to the trailhead for the falls. The parking lot is small, and park rangers oversee the entry into the parking lot during summer weekends and holidays.

Each parking reservation allows you to park and enjoy Kilgore Falls for a few hours. It’s a good idea to bring water shoes, as the rocks around the waterfall can be slippery.

Harrisburg Day Trip

The capitol city of Pennsylvania has a lot of fun options for day trips. There’s city island which features a baseball stadium, train, and the Susquehanna Pride riverboat.

In the city, the Pennsylvania State Museum is a good option for history buffs, while it also has an area that caters to kids. There’s the Whitaker Center with Kids Place and many other kid-oriented exhibits.

Allentown Day Trip

Allentown is home to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. In addition to this massive amusement park, there’s also the Da Vinci Science Center .

Nearby, the Crayola Experience in Easton, which is close to Allentown, is fun for the younger bunch.

Ricketts Glen Day Trip

Ricketts Glen is a state park located in northern Pennsylvania. This beautiful park has a waterfall trail that features over two dozen waterfalls. This hike is good for older children, around ages 8 or older who are used to longer hikes. There’s a lot of stairs and hills, but a ton of amazing places to explore.

After the over four mile hike, relax on the park’s sandy lake beach of Lake Jean. There are restrooms and a changing area at the beach. Be sure to bring a picnic meal and some inner tubes for some added fun.

Lancaster Day Trip

Lancaster has so many fun places to visit, it will be difficult to list all of them in this short description. First, there’s Tiny Town , a small indoor village for kids.

Of course, Dutch Wonderland , an amusement park catering to young children, is a favorite with kids ages 2 to 10. Next, check out all of the train-related fun with a trip to Strasburg Rail Road and the Choo Choo Barn.

Don’t forget that Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is located close to Strasburg Rail Road. The farm features so many activities, it could be a day trip by itself. There are over 20 fun activities for kids in Lancaster .

Seaside Heights Day Trip

Seaside Heights is a bit of a drive from Pennsylvania, but it is possible to do as a day trip (we’ve done it several times). The beach town features Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach .

This pier is filled with amusement rides, while the water park, Breakwater Beach, is located on the next block over from the pier. This is the home of an amazingly long chair lift with beautiful views of the ocean. Of course, it’s also fun to play on the beach.

Ohiopyle Day Trip

Ohiopyle is a state park located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, in the general Pittsburgh region. The park boasts amazing white water rafting, but is also known for a short hike to Cucumber Falls and natural water slides. Also in the area is Seven Springs Resort , which features skiing in the winter and a fun alpine sled run in the summer.

Reading Day Trip

Reading is an interesting day trip destination for kids. There’s the Pagoda that overlooks the city of Reading, an interesting and educational place to visit in the city. Also, nearby is The Works at Wyomissing, a place with go-karts, an arcade, and play place for kids.

Hershey Day Trip

Hershey is known as the sweetest place on earth. Even the streetlights in downtown Hershey are shaped like kisses.

Hersheypark is the highlight of a Hershey day trip, but there’s also plenty more to do in the Hershey area. Check out Indian Echo Caverns , ZooAmerica , The Hershey Story museum, and Hershey Gardens. A bit up the road is Lake Tobias , a popular animal safari and walk-thru zoo.

Chambersburg Day Trip

Chambersburg is the county seat of Franklin County. Though it’s a comparatively small town, there are some fun and unique activities nearby. This includes Chambersburg Aquatic Center , with its water slides, lazy river, and miniature golf course.

Beside the aquatic center is Chambersburg Memorial Park . This park features a unique toddler playground. Also worth checking out in the area is Norlo Park that features miniature train rides and Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium . While Chambersburg is a small town, there are quite a few fun day trips for kids in the area.

Baltimore Day Trip

8 Fun and Simple Day Trips for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Are you aching to get outside? Just because you have toddlers or preschoolers doesn’t mean you can’t get out and have some fun! Here are some day trips that you and your tiny companions will enjoy! Who said big kids get all the fun anyway?

Psst! I kept these ideas super simple. Why? Because you’re a mom and some days we need simple — just to function. I’m talking frozen pizza and goldfish for lunch simple. So don’t see the words “day trip” and feel like you need to run and hide your head under the pillow. You won’t have to plan a million outfits or three meals. But, you will want to take your camera to catch all your favorite, fun memories!

So, get outside your home and enjoy some outings with your kids. Yes, you will have to change out of your jammies, but trust me, you WILL be glad you did. So get your toddler and preschoolers ready to have some simple fun — outside your home!

Fun, Simple Day Trips for Preschoolers

• The local zoo. Pack some sunscreen, bottled water, snacks, a camera and head out as early as possible for this day trip. Don’t forget to take along some spending money in case you spy some really cute souvenirs at the gift shop. This was one of my fave parts of a zoo trip when I was a munchkin!

Preschoolers love seeing animals up close and learning about them so take extra time to read your kiddos the information that is available about each exhibit. Many local zoos also offer a farm-life area that is hands-on where kids can feed lots of baby animals. What preschooler doesn’t love feeding the baby goats a bottle of milk!

• A berry farm. Check out your local farm for some good pickin’! Pick the juiciest strawberries and head home and bake pies, strawberry shortcake or try out some strawberry smoothies!
• The library. Libraries today offer more than just books. There are DVDS, books on CD and other fun things to check out. Many libraries also offer special shows and activities during the summer. Some have special activity rooms where kids can knit, crochet, paint, make bead necklaces and other hands-on educational activities . The library is also a nice place for moms to relax. Enjoy the quiet while your child plays some computer games, board games or checks out the newest books for his or her age group. Libraries also offer summer reading programs that offer fun perks like free meals, free treats, free toys and even some free passes to favorite play areas .
• The park. Recreational parks are adding more and more cool stuff everyday. Some add long bike trails, fish ponds, amazingly tall slides and of course the classic favorite — swings. The park is best enjoyed early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the bees, hot sun and crowd.
• Indoor playgrounds. This option is fun for parents and kids. Most indoor playgrounds offer a cozy nook for the parents to enjoy some Joe and read some books while the kids jump, run and jump in a supervised, air-conditioned facility. Once you locate your favorite spot, keep an ear out for upcoming deals and promotions. Some of these playgrounds offer seasonal discounts that can save your family a good bit of money.
• Children’s Museum. These museums are full of sensory learning experiences for all ages. Many have pretend grocery stores, IMAX theaters, craft areas and fish petting areas. These tend to be a little bit more expensive than other day outings, but well worth a planned visit. You could also include the grandparents to make this a more memorable trip.
• Special shows. Check out your city’s popular entertainment coliseum to see when special kid-friendly shows are available. Winnie the Pooh, Sesame Street and other favorites often have fun kid performances country-wide during the summer to provide top-notch entertainment for small children.
• Build-a-bear. Spend the day making stuffed animals! Kids love to create things, and making a teddy bear or other stuffed animal is no exception. Your child will be able to pick out their own stuffed animal, help stuff it and place a heart inside. Your child will also be given the important responsibility of naming the stuffed animal. Special keepsakes and a certificate will be given to your child as well that he can keep to remember this special outing. The Build-a-bear stuffed animals are also high quality and can last for quite a while. Definitely worth the experience and memories!

B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Mystic is the last steam-powered cider mill still in use in the US today, and you can watch them pressing fresh apples for their ever-popular apple cider goodies. Experience the Cliff Walk

Newport’s famous Cliff Walk is not suited for strollers or toddlers, but older kids love it! What are the best things to do with children in Moscow?

• Summer: Futuristic parks, river boats and ice caves are perfect attractions for when the temperatures rise above 30.
• Museums: Russians are very proud of their history, which means that their museums are kept to a world-class standard. Both parents and children alike will be sure to learn something new at one of the many, often unique museums in Moscow.
• Culture: From the world’s oldest puppet theatre to UNESCO-listed whimsical, wooden palaces there’ll be plenty to treat your little prince or princess to.
• Winter: New Year is arguably the most magical time to visit Moscow, especially for children. The ice rinks throughout the city, Christmas markets and the magnificent ice-sculpture festival truly make Moscow a winter wonderland. 

Moscow truly is a mega-metropolis like no other. Its non-stop energy and sheer unorthodoxy is sure to enthuse any child with its rebellious, east-meets-west spirit. Just walking down Old Arabat Street— where ancient wooden storehouses are squashed against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by blingy high-rises— is sure to appeal to the childish disdain of all things orderly and conventional. Apart from the main sites, there’s a whole host of family-friendly activities in Moscow from the very traditional to the uber, high-tech that will keep your kids entertained.

VDNKh  is Russia’s version of Disneyland and, to be honest, we think it trumps that tacky theme park by a mile. First things first is its size. At almost 600 acres, this Soviet park has everything; from space museums to soviet shopping outlets to equestrian centers to beaches. In fact, there’s so much to do that there really is no way to cover it all in one day. Our favorite attractions include the ROBO station, the super-cool playgrounds near the aquarium and the world’s biggest ice rink in winter. Better rent out scooters or bikes as well if you plan on seeing at least a fraction of this green gem.

Unlike VDNKh, you won’t have to travel far from the centre to seek the lovely lush lawns of  Gorky Park . Come early so that you can grab a beanbag or hammock for yourself while your children have some fun on the colorful playground rides or play ping-pong under the trees. At teatime, head over to the traditional Russian tea house for a brew from a giant samovar. It’s worth staying on for the whole day until dusk when the roof of the park’s planetarium slides open to reveal the wonders of the sky.

Zaradye Park

Moscow’s brand-new  Zaradye Park  couldn’t be more different from the stern, red brick of the Kremlin that towers over it. Whichever way you look, you’ll be rubbing your eyes to make sure that this other-worldly landscape of floating glass bridges, underground ancient walkways, Siberian tundra and ice caves really does exist. For children, this wild-urban project is the perfect place for them to let some steam off during a day of sightseeing. Thanks to the unbelievable glass-paneled roof that keeps warm air in and the rain out, the lawns are perfect for lounging on all year round.

There’s a never-ending stream of tour boats bobbing up and down the Moskva River to hop on to when those little legs have had enough of walking. But for those who’d like something a little special, nothing beats the Radisson yacht. Champagne, on-board dining and floor to ceiling windows make it the most stylish way to cruise round Moscow.

Museum of Cosmonauts

This is THE museum to go to if you happen to have a Star Wars fan with you. Unlike in countless planetariums around the world where gimmicky models of the solar system and dramatic movies make for a hollow experience, here you get the real thing. There’s a life-size model of the Russian space station, chunks of the moon, a space toilet, the actual Sputnik, heck, even Belka & Strelka, the space dogs, are there standing next to the very space shuttle they flew into space with  (never fear, they were stuffed only after they died of old age).  *For extreme fanatics, it’s worth noting you can arrange a tour to Star City, the astronaut training centre that is still in use outside of Moscow.

Darwin Museum

The first museum in the world devoted to explaining the most important concept of biology definitely deserves a visit. Its menagerie of nearly half a million stuffed animals illustrate the steady process of evolution and the many now extinct animals it boasts like the Dodo serve as a warning bell for what the age of mass-industrialization might bring. Despite its name, the  Darwin museum isn’t at all quaint or old-fashioned with plenty of interactive displays and microscopes for children to engage with.

Orlov Museum of Paleontology

This museum could easily compete with the famed Natural History Museum in London. In fact, its extensive exhibit of ginormous skeletons from all sorts of beasts from sloths to diplodocuses might even be more impressive than London’s. After all, Russia is an awful lot bigger than England and probably has lot more giants slumbering away in the depths of its forests just waiting to be dug up!

The Experimentanium

There’s lots of fun to be had at this fully hands-on science museum. It’s absolutely perfect for little toddlers and mischievous boys alike because nothing’s off bounds—the whole place is a playground (with a lot of science snuck in!). And don’t worry, most of the descriptions are in English so they’ll definitely learn something along the way.

Moscow City

The second tallest, the third tallest, the fourth tallest and the sixth and seventh tallest buildings in Europe can all be found within a few meters of each other in the financial district, Moscow city. Apart from breaking their necks trying to gape at all the quirky high-rises, your kids can get a thrill by going up to the 54th floor of Ostankino TV Tower to its awe-inspiring panoramic viewing platform with a drop-down, glass floor!

A trip down to this veritable villain’s lair is certainly worth it with children, not least because it’s 18 stories underground…. AND the only way back up is by the stairs making it the perfect recipe for a peaceful afternoon. Apart from tiring out children, Bunker 42 has the distinction of being a genuine nuclear bunker. It was intended to be the hide-away of the USSR’s top dogs in the case of nuclear war and the staff here do such an excellent job of recreating the tense atmosphere that we hazard against taking softer children here. Everything, from the actual computer with the big red button which would have been used to start WW3 to the KGB’s rooms, have been preserved exactly as they were at the height of the cold war.

Central Armed Forces Museum

Though there isn’t much English in this museum dedicated to all things sickle and hammer (i.e. the Red Army), the genuine American U2 spy plane it has on show and the opportunity to hold real (but thankfully, not loaded!) guns make it a real treasure trove for army-mad kids.

Victory Museum

You don’t actually need to step a foot in this museum dedicated entirely to WW2 to please your wannabe soldiers. Just sit down on a bench as your kids jump on and off the airplanes, tanks, armored vehicles and every other killing machine imaginable that are free to explore outside this museum.

Armory Chamber

Part of the Kremlin complex, the Armory Chamber’s incredibly diverse displays—spanning folk art to silverware to coronation dresses— cover almost every era of Russia’s royal history. The wedding carriages and ceremonial arms are particularly well-loved by children.

Moscow State Puppet Theatre

The oldest puppet theatre in Moscow is also the largest in the world. Its wide-ranging repertoire has shows for tiny tots up to adult-only shows. Its fairytale clock, from which mythical creatures spring out, will be the cherry on top of a magical visit to this dear theatre.

Central Kids Store on Lubyanka

This seven-story department store devoted entirely to little people boasts the biggest Hamleys in the world, the biggest time keeping mechanism and one of the best viewing platforms in Moscow. In other words, it’s kiddy heaven. The building itself is also rather noteworthy, dating back to 1953. Its stained murals and colorful tiles give it an old-world (soviet) charm.

Izmailovsky Park

This is possibly the world’s only Slavic theme park. Just joking, but just be warned this recreated Russian village with mini-museums, bakeries and a market is a teensy bit kitsch. If your children are artsy, then why not let them make their own matryoshka at a masterclass instead of buying one at the market. And while the kiddies busy themselves with the business of covering every square inch of their clothes in paint, there’s plenty for parents to peruse; like the vodka museum or the pleasantly, rolling park land.

Kolomenskoye Park

Ivan the Terrible’s summer retreat isn’t at all as gloomy as you’d expect, indeed some might say it’s actually a bit too colorful. In our opinion, its postcard-perfect; with petite trains chugging through the acres of apple orchards, a pearl-white 16th century, UNESCO-listed church and a magnificently vibrant, 300 year old wooden palace. Take your children on a trip back in time, they’ll be delighted - we promise.

Moscow Rizhsky Railway Station

If you don’t have time to take your children on the Trans-Siberian, then a ride on a Soviet steam train is a superb alternative. The beauty of chugging through the outskirts of Moscow on a train with a red star on its gleaming, coal-black engine will definitely make Harry Potter fans squeal with excitement. Adults will appreciate the cups of tea served in old-style soviet mugs specifically made for train journeys. If you’d like to explore the rail museum after the trip (we highly recommend it), be prepared for the weather as the whole exhibition is uncovered.

Moscow Metro Museum

After taking your children on the Moscow metro (which you simply must!), chances are they’ll bombard you with all sorts of questions a parent isn’t equipped to answer; like “How fast do the trains go?” and “Who drives them?”. Never fear, Moscow’s metro actually has a free museum which will answer all these questions, as well as even allowing kids to take a seat in the driver’s seat for a virtual ride down the tunnels.

Moscow Ice Festival

Each winter in Park Pobedy, blocks of ice are towed in from Russia’s great lakes to be chiseled away into masterpieces. Children will be delighted to find that they can even clamber upon some of these unbelievably big artworks. But the favorite by far, are super slippery ice slides. 

*Just beware of wet bums— waterproofs are a must.

Ice-skating

There are almost 1500 ice-skating rinks in Moscow alone. It’s almost as if every open plot of land has water poured over it; even Red Square is transformed into a mega rink! The park VDNKh boasts the biggest in the world, but there’s also an awesome rooftop ice rink at ArtPlay. Wherever you take your children, you can’t go wrong with a bit of skating.

North Carolina Zoos and Aquariums

1. Western North Carolina Nature Center

Take the kids to see 60 domestic and wild animal species and 100 plant species in Asheville, NC.

The WNC Nature Center focuses on showcasing flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

2. North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher

This top-notch aquarium has frequent sell-outs, so make sure to make your reservations far in advance.

Kids will love seeing sharks, eels, stingrays, baby sea turtles, an albino alligator, and more.

3. North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro holds the title of the world’s largest natural habitat zoo; quite the sight to behold.

4. North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island

A member of the nonprofit North Carolina Aquarium Society, this NC delightful aquarium is home to many sea creatures.

Easy North Carolina Biking and Hiking Trails for Kids

Get your kids outside to enjoy these nature trails. They are short and perfect for the whole family to enjoy! Our favorite place is the Pisgah National Forest, but there are many other parks to appreciate North Carolina’s natural beauty.

1. Mount Mitchell Summit Trail

Located near Montreat, NC, in Mount Mitchell State Park , this easy out-and-back trail is an excellent diversion for young hikers.

It’s a paved trail that takes only 12 minutes to complete, but you can stop along the way to enjoy the birds and view.

2. Juney Whank Falls Trail

This loop trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is 0.6 miles and takes about 20 to 25 minutes to complete. It’s near Bryson City. (Note: This trail isn’t pet-friendly.)

3. Linville Falls Trail

This trail takes about 21 minutes to complete, hiking in and back out, and is a popular walking spot.

It’s near Jonas Ridge, in the Linville Gorge Wilderness, and is roughly 0.9 miles.

4. Pisgah Covered Bridge Loop

Although only a 0.2-mile loop, this trail near Seagrove in the Pisgah Natural Area is a fun place to explore and picnic.

Kids will love to see the historic covered bridge, which is only of only two covered bridges left in the state.

5. Cascades Trail

This 0.8-mile trail takes you into wooded areas and has fun sights, including waterfalls and a wooden bridge. It takes about 21 minutes to complete and is an overall easy hike for the kids to enjoy.

6. Earth Mountain Bike Rental

If your kids love riding bikes or mountain biking, then check out the awesome bike rentals at Earth Mountain Bicycle located in downtown Brevard, NC.

This mountain town is surrounded by national and state parks. It’s one of the best places for bike riding.

Ride to one of the picnic shelters, stop and see the waterfalls, or just enjoy a ride through town.

There’s so many great things about the Brevard, Pisgah Forest, and Dupont areas.

Family-Friendly North Carolina Beaches

1. Fort Fisher State Park Beach

This beach is part of the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area , offering 6 miles of beach and lots of wildlife. Also in the area are a Civil War historic site, the aquarium, and a boating ramp.

2. Carolina Beach

Pack your bathing suits and head to the Cape Fear shoreline to enjoy lots of sand and sun.

Kids can also enjoy shelling, fishing, surfing, and more among the 44 public access points.

3. Nags Head Beach

Spend a day on the beach or explore the rest of this popular tourist destination in Nags Head.

You’ll find lots of shops, restaurants, and historical attractions, and go dolphin watching on a pontoon boat .

4. Cape Hatteras National Seashore

During this beach trip to Cape Hatteras, make sure to save some time to explore the lighthouse. Although undergoing restoration, it’s still an impressive sight, standing 197 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

5. Wrightsville Beach

Build sand castles, fly a kite, or ride the waves on a boogie board. Or see the beach from a whole new angle on a scenic beach cruise.

North Carolina Historic Districts

1. Bath Historic District

Bath is the first town in North Carolina, established in 1705, and today it remains a small village with historical significance. It’s a great look back into history for the kids.

2. Oakwood Historic District

This area features impressive examples of various architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

You can take a self-guided walking tour through the charming streets and learn about the prominent former residents that once called the neighborhood home.

3. National Register Historic District

This historic district is one of the largest in the south and features an array of fine mansions and gardens.

You can explore on foot, but kids would likely love to take a horse-drawn carriage through the streets.

4. Historic Biltmore Village

Home to the famous Biltmore Estate, the Biltmore Village was also home to the area’s first train station.

Biltmore Village mimics a small English Village and features lots of charm, hosting fairs and festivals throughout the year.

5. Old Salem

Visit unique shops and a charming bakery, and explore a living history museum. The museum provides a glimpse into the Moravian community that settled the area in 1766.

2. Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe

This expansive water park has over 40 rides and attractions, including Shipwreck Cove and a two million gallon wave pool.

3. Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park

Back to Wilmington for this amusuement center featuring mini golf, a rock climbing wall, and a water park. There’s also mini bowling, go-karts, and much more.

You can keep the kids endlessly entertained, filling weekends and after-school hours with all the amazing things to do with kids in NYC . When they’re off school, however, that’s a great time to think about a day trip from NYC for some home day adventures. While there are plenty of options for weekend getaways to family resorts and other nearby attractions, a day trip means lots of fun without making reservations or packing a bag. These day trips for kids include epic options like sailing, hiking, biking and even foraging in the woods. Head to a museum, water park, amusement park or beach, all within a couple hours of the city, and you’re sure to have a blast on your next home day adventure.

1.  Riverhead, NY

Travel time: 2 hours from NYC

This Suffolk County town boasts more than just the sprawling Tanger Outlet. It's home to the Long Island Aquarium ( longislandaquarium.com ), which houses penguins, otters, octopus and one of the largest all-living, closed-system coral reef displays. Children will love getting their hands wet in the touch tank and taking a look at the sharks (those who are brave enough can even cage dive with them)! Travel time: 2.5 hours from NYC

This beachy destination, located on the southern tip of New Jersey, is full of great spots for families and curious kids. In addition to strolling along its white sand beaches, families can explore the remains of the U.S.S. Atlantus or venture out into the waters on a tour with Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center ( capemaywhalewatch.com ). Head to the Cape May Count Park & Zoo, ( cmczoo.com ) an admission-free park complete with trolley trains, a carousel, a rock climbing wall and the Tree to Tree Adventure Park. If you’re in town on a day with clear skies, pack a picnic lunch and climb the 199 steps to get to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse ( lighthousefriends.com ).

3.  Bucks County, PA

Whether your kids prefer indoor fun, outdoor adventures or close encounters with their favorite TV characters, this spot has it all. As the home of Sesame Place ( sesameplace.com ), children will love meeting Elmo, Big Bird and the rest of the furry gang while experiencing thrilling rides tailored just for them. The Bucks County Children’s Museum ( buckskids.org ) offers interactive educational exhibits where kids can dig for buried treasure, build their own race car and learn how to operate the Delaware Canal system .  Little ones can take a ride on the hand-carved wooden figures on the restored 1922 Grand Carousel at Giggleberry Fair before enjoying arcade games in the Game Room or strolling through the shops at 18th-century Peddler’s Village ( peddlersvillage.com ) . Travel time: 40 mins from NYC

Moms and dads can keep the schlepping to a minimum by hopping across the Hudson for a hassle-free day with their little ones. Jersey City boasts some amazing family-friendly entertainment that can be tackled while keeping the Manhattan skyline within view. Hours of awe-worthy entertainment await at the Liberty Science Center ( lsc.org ) where curious kids will have a blast making their way through the various exhibitions.  

5.  Norwalk, CT

Travel time: 1.5 hours from NYC

Make your first stop in Norwalk the interactive Stepping Stones Museum for Children ( steppingstonesmuseum.org ) for kids 10 and under. The Energy Lab is one of the venue's must-see science-themed offerings. Next, be sure to hit up the impressive Maritime Aquarium ( maritimeaquarium.org ) where kids learn about marine animals that live in the Long Island Sound, meet several varieties of real, live dragons and even touch the tops of jiggly jellyfish. Afterward, choose from a varied selection of its epic IMAX films to enjoy.

6.  Wildwood, NJ

This Jersey Shore town is more family-friendly than MTV cameras led us to believe. Stay at El Coronado Resort ( elcoronado.com ) and enjoy poolside barbecues, movies and live entertainment. Morey's Piers   ( moreyspiers.com )   offers two parks for one price: Raging Waters and the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club, a 10-minute walk or five-minute tram ride away. Those who want to remain on dry land can hit up carnival rides and other attractions at three amusement piers though combo tickets are available if your little ones can't decide. Grab a bite at Crab & Seafood Shack ( crabandseafoodshack.com ) before finishing up the day. 

7.  New Windsor, NY

Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes from NYC

Families looking for a cultural getaway are free to traverse 500 grassy acres of large-scale sculptures at Storm King Arts Center, a modern art mecca located in the foothills of the Hudson Valley ( stormkingartcenter.org ). For lunch, stop by the The Storm King Café,   which uses locally grown ingredients in its salads, soups and sandwiches.

8.  The Hamptons, NY

The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center ( sofo.org ) immerses kids in each exhibit by engaging all five senses. Kids smell foxes, touch marine animals and look through telescopes as they explore. The nature trail behind the museum connects to the nine-mile Long Pond Greenbelt—little ones will have a ball crunching fall leaves. The quaint Sip 'n Soda ( sipnsoda.com )   has typical diner fare, but their famous ice cream sodas are a must. Sugar Daddy’s Toy Store has a huge selection of Rainbow Looms, Disney Infinity characters and a life-size illuminated Iron Man that makes for fun photos.

9.  Lehigh Valley, PA

If the family can’t choose between thrilling amusement rides and swimming pools on a hot summer day, then an itinerary centered on Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom ( dorneypark.com ) will satisfy all. The older set will enjoy the twisting, turning dry and wet roller coasters while little ones enjoy Peanuts-themed rides.

10.  Greenport, NY

A picturesque former whaling village, Greenport boasts a walkable downtown of shops, galleries and restaurants featuring local seafood. At Preston's Dock, sign up for a cruise aboard the Glory ( greenportlaunch.com ), a 30-foot solar-powered sailing vessel. Just 15 minutes away, kids can swim at Orient Beach State Park, which has a restored lighthouse at its tip, while keeping an eye out for wildlife like great blue herons and osprey. Back in Greenport, chow down at Claudio's ( claudios.com ), a favorite since 1870. Dine on the catch of the day while kids sample fish filet sandwiches.

11.  Poconos, PA

No matter the season, the Poconos have something to offer—lakeside activities, skiing, great food, comfy accommodations and more. Plus, the adventurous will love the indoor waterparks and theme parks. Fortunately, each of the destinations we've rounded up aren't terribly far from NYC, so you won't have to stress about lengthy trips.

12.  West Point, NY

Travel time: 1.5 hours from NYC 

Our nation’s history and Gothic architecture await at the prestigious United States Military Academy (all visitors over 16 must present ID). Begin at the Visitors Center ( usma.edu ) where you can buy tickets for the one-hour bus tour (no self-guided tours are permitted; check westpointtours.com for schedule). The first stop is the massive granite Cadet Chapel, home of the world’s largest pipe organ as well as astounding stained glass windows. Trophy Point is another highlight, with its breathtaking vista overlooking the Hudson River. Post-tour, peruse the gift shop, which has an ample selection of kiddie-sized Army gear, from hooded sweatshirts to plush mascots and make a stop at the free West Point Museum, where weapons aficionados of all ages will gawk at the collection of swords, rifles and tanks from every time period. After leaving the grounds, head to the Ice Cream Shoppe in Highland Falls for cones or milkshakes.

13.  Six Flags in Jackson, NJ

Check out amazing activities from A–Z at Six Flags Great Adventure! You can zip down a log flume, brave a swinging pirate ship, brave a 15-story ferris wheel and even fly like Superman (not for the faint of heart). Plus, with the Safari Experience you can see 1,200 animals all from the comfort of your car. ( sixflags.com/greatadventure ).

14.  Boundless Adventures

Travel time: 1 hour from NYC

Boundless Adventures is an enormous  aerial adventure park on a forested part of the campus of Purchase College in Westchester: There are nine courses with more than 90 bridges, 17 zip lines and a diverse terrain that will dazzle you with its natural beauty. New to aerial adventure parks? No problem. Boundless Adventures has four difficulty levels, which means every participant will be matched with the right course - plan on spending around four hours climbing, zipping and cruising through the trees!

15.  Governors Island

OK, so this is  technically  still in NYC, but a visit Governors Island makes for a spectacular day out. Located in the heart of New York Harbor, one of our go-to  family attractions  offers scenic views, a country environment and a plethora of outdoor activities for kids and adults (like one of the coolest kids' playgrounds NYC —with mighty impressive slides).

16.  The Land of Make Believe & Pirate's Cove in Hope, NJ

Land of Make Believe & Pirate’s Cove amusement park is just a short drive from NYC, making it a perfect pick for warm-weather weekends—the younger set will find plenty to do, including jumpy frog rides, a swaying tugboat ride, a splash park area with a fort and a 1000-gallon dump bucket, a lazy river ride with single or double tubes, a shallow wave pool with a pirate ship that has slides and spray showers, and some sumer fun water slides…just to name a few! ( lomb.com ).

17.  Hiking trails

Just because you live in the Big Apple doesn't mean you can't spend time in the great outdoors. There are amazing family-friendly hikes close to NYC—in fact, the Bronx River Greenway and Inwood Hill Park are right in the middle of the city! So: Check the weather, pack a picnic and make plans to visit mother nature with the fam. These hiking trails are great for children of all ages, from toddlers out for a stroll to bigger kids looking to go for a scramble. After all, it's up to you to make this summer great.  

18.  Strawberry picking

Nothing says summertime like a bowl of freshly-picked fruit. When the warm weather hits, grab the whole family and enjoy the best strawberry picking in New York. These extra-sweet destinations will certainly inspire delicious seasonal baking that the whole clan will love—plus time outdoors certainly beats a trip to the grocery store. These spots will leave you hungry for more, so don’t venture out on a full stomach!

19.  Cherry picking

There's a lot to love about summer vacation—the gorgeous weather, the carefree feeling and of course, the tasty treats that come with the season. Take a trip to your local farm or orchard for the best cherry picking NY has to offer. Moscow has an incredibly turbulent history, a seemingly resilient culture, and a unique enchantment that pulls countless tourists to the city each year! Although the warmer months make exploring Moscow’s attractions more favorable, there’s just something about a fresh snowfall that only enhances the appearance of the city’s iconic sites!

If you’re a first-time visitor to Moscow, or simply wanting to see as much of the city as possible, this Moscow itinerary will help you do just that!

Best Time To Visit Moscow

Here is a quick look at the seasons so you can decide when to visit Moscow!

The summer months (June-August) are a great time to travel to Moscow to take advantage of the enjoyable mild temperatures. This is considered peak travel season. Bear in mind that hotel prices rise along with the temperatures!

If you’re planning a trip to Moscow during fall (September-November) try to plan for early fall. This way the temperatures will still be pleasant and winter won’t be threatening.

Russian winters (December-February) are not for the faint of heart as Napoleon learned to his peril. Some days the sun will be out for less than an hour, and snow is guaranteed. Although winters are exceptionally cold, this is when you’ll get a true glimpse of the Moscow experience!

The best time to visit Moscow is during spring  (March-May). The temperatures will begin to creep up and the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day. Hotel rates will also have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges!

With a Moscow City Pass , you can experience the best of Moscow at the CHEAPEST prices. Discounts, attractions, tickets, and even public transport are all standards in any good city pass – be sure invest now and save them $$$ when you arrive!

Moscow is a large city with many accommodation options to choose from. Staying in a location that fits with your travel plans will only enhance your Moscow itinerary. Here is a brief introduction to a few great areas of the city we recommend checking out!

The best place to stay in Moscow to be close to all the action is Kitay-Gorod. This charming neighborhood will put you within walking distance to Moscow’s famous Red Square, thus cutting down on travel time. This will allow you to see more of the city in a shorter amount of time!

It’s surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. If you’re a first-time visitor to Moscow, or just planning a quick weekend in Moscow, then this area is perfect for you!

Another great area to consider is the Zamoskvorechye district. This area of the city offers a blend of new and old Moscow. It has an artsy vibe and there are plenty of fun sites you can explore outside of the main touristy areas of Moscow.

Of course, as in all areas of Moscow, it’s close to public transportation that will quickly connect you with the rest of the city and make your Moscow itinerary super accessible!

Best Airbnb in Moscow – Exclusive Apartment in Old Moscow

Best Budget Hotel in Moscow – Izmailovo Alfa Hotel

The Izmailovo Alfa Hotel is a very highly rated accommodation that provides all the components necessary for a comfortable trip to Moscow. There is an on-site restaurant, bar, fitness center, and an airport shuttle service. The rooms are modern and spacious and are equipped with a TV, heating/air conditioning, minibar, and more!

Best Luxury Hotel in Moscow – Crowne Plaza Moscow World Trade Centre

If you’re touring Moscow in luxury, the Crowne Plaza Moscow World Trade Centre is the hotel for you! Elegantly furnished rooms are equipped with a minibar, flat-screen TV,  in-room safes, as well as tea and coffee making facilities! Bathrooms come with bathrobes, slippers, and free toiletries. There is also an onsite restaurant, bar, and fitness center.

Best Hostel in Moscow – Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station. Guests will enjoy all the usual hostel perks such as self-catering facilities, 24-hour reception, Free Wi-Fi, and security lockers. This is one of the best hostels in Moscow and its wonderful social atmosphere and will make your vacation in Moscow extra special!

Godzillas Hostel is one of our favourites in Moscow but they’re not taking guests right now. We’re not sure if they’re closed for good but we hope they’ll come back soon.

An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!

The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!

If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.

Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!

No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!

Red Square | Moscow Kremlin | Lenin’s Mausoleum | St. Basil’s Cathedral  | GUM Department Store

Spend the first day of your itinerary taking your own self guided Moscow walking tour around the historic Red Square! This is Moscow’s compact city center and every stop on this list is within easy walking distance to the next! Get ready to see all of the top Moscow landmarks!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

• Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
• Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees. 
• Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

• Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
• Cost: USD $15.00
• Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

On your 2 day itinerary in Moscow, you’ll have a chance to use the city’s excellent public transportation service! You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!

• Food nearby: Culinary Shop Karavaevs Brothers is a cozy and simple place to have a quick bite, they also have vegetarian options!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!
• Cost: Free! 
• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner! 

Insider Tip: When planning your 2 days in Moscow itinerary, keep in mind that most museums in Moscow are closed on Mondays, this includes The State Tretyakov Gallery!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

• Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!

• Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

• A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
• Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
• The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

• The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
• Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
• Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

• Closed on Mondays
• Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
• The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Getting around nyc.

If you are flying into the city, you are likely arriving at one of three airports: Newark (in New Jersey), JFK, or LaGuardia. Of the three, JFK is the easiest to connect to with public transportation via the Jamaica line of the Long Island Railroad. We LOVE taking public transportation when in big cities, and that includes NYC. NYC’s subway and transit system is one of the best in the world; now you can pay for your journeys with a simple tap of your credit card, Apple Watch, or iPhone.

When our kids were small, we always held them or carried them in carriers through subway stops so we didn’t get split up. As my children got older, we always created a “lost subway” plan upon arrival: if you get separated from your family, always get off at the next stop. Of course, cell phones are certainly handy for this, but you won’t always get service underground.

We also do a lot of walking when in NYC, but if you are feeling tired, there are tons of cabs and ride share services that can take you anywhere. Taxis still seem to be a bit cheaper than Uber/Lyft in the city, but that will likely change.

Walk or bike the brooklyn bridge.

Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge an exciting opportunity to explore the views, marvel at the architecture, and then explore the borough of Brooklyn.

Biking the bridge used to be an even better option, but bikes have officially been relegated to the lower levels of the bridge. The “top of the bridge” suspension pictures are now only available by foot , which is a bit of a hike from the closest Subway line, but well worth the up-close and East River views.

If you are a biking family, you will notice bike rental stations throughout cycle-friendly areas of Manhattan, namely in Central Park and along the Battery.

From Bike and Roll and Blazing Saddles to Bike Rent NYC and even the pay as you go Citi Bikes, taking a bike ride through New York to see more of the city is a best bet. You can find a variety of bike rental deals and tours on TripAdvisor.

Take in the Views from the Top of the Empire State Building

Want a quintessentially New York experience? Head to the top of the Empire State Building for iconic views of the city!

Of course, everyone else will be doing this too, so make this your first stop of any sightseeing day . Expect long lines after the first hour after the building opens. We visited during right after opening on a Sunday and had zero wait!

To save time and money, buy tickets ahead of time with a New York Pass by our friends at Go City , and bring coins to operate the binoculars at the top.

During our most recent visit early spring, it was quite cold and actually started (magically) snowing as we took in the views. We definitely enjoyed the newly implemented heat lamps that helped us beat the chill.

Experience the Hustle and Bustle of Grand Central Terminal

The ambiance may be busy inside Grand Central Terminal, but kids love it! Grab an easy meal from one of the many food vendors, and check out the stunning decor on the ceilings and walls.

The sheer scope of this place is awe-inspiring. Best of all, this classic New York City experience is free ! There are even walking tours and guided tours offered daily.

Adjacent, find Grand Central Market with its fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meat. Take a walk down the street to the Chrysler Building or Summit ONE Vanderbilt , one of the city’s newest “observation” experiences.

Shop Rockefeller Center and See the Top of the Rock

Fun for adults as well as kids, Rockefeller Plaza offers great shopping, celeb spotting, and, of course, ice skating in the winter (we sadly missed this tradition this year by one day!).

Let the kids meander through the huge LEGO, FAO Schwartz, or Nintendo stores, and take in the famous 30 Rock building. Avoid the morning hour if you don’t want to get caught up in the Today Show crowds, or arrive early with a clever sign and be part of the masses!

If you’re not visiting the Empire State Building on your New York City trip, a visit to Top of the Rock offers competitive views, and is less crowded (especially at night).

The LEGO Store Fifth Avenue boasts one of the few minifig factory stations where you can design and print your own LEGO clothes for your minifig . These adorable guys and gals come printed with a LEGO Store NYC stand making it a fantastic souvenir for your trip.

The food court underneath 30 Rock boasts an expansive lineup of grab-and-go food. Its underground location also is a great escape if it starts to rain or there is bad weather.

Have a Museum Day at Some NYC Classics

No family should visit New York City and not plan a day for museum touring! We love the American Museum of Natural History , both for its subject matter (animals and primitive humans and nature, oh my!) and for its Upper West Side location adjacent to Central Park. This museum is perfectly paired with an afternoon outside.

On the other side of Central Park (and easily accessible via subway), the Metropolitan Museum of Ar t is ideal for older kids (with younger kids, focus only on smaller sections of the museum, or check out the ongoing programs for preschoolers and toddlers).

Be sure to ask the museum information desk for their interactive Family Guide to follow along with while exploring. Family Audio Tours are also available and can be played from your smart phone.

The nearby Guggenheim Museum is much smaller (although still large) and might be a bit more navigable for families with small children. Their famous spiraling ramp (see Mr. Popper’s Penguins for a visual) makes getting lost much less likely. A kid’s guide is also available.

On our most recent visit to NYC, we finally visited The Musuem of Modern Art (MOMA) and my kiddos loved it. Highlights include Monet’s Waterlilies, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Jackson Pollack masterpieces, and lots of quirky modern art installations that had my kiddos pondering.

Pay Your Respects at the National 9/11 Memorial

Take time out of your New York City sightseeing to devote a few hours to the World Trade Center and its National 9/11 Memorial and Museum .

The site is certainly hard for many American families to see, but the museum includes a well-constructed memorial and displays. The location is worthy of a pilgrimage, and will be especially sobering for adults who remember the twin towers while they stood.

Even though they weren’t alive at the time, our middle school aged-children felt that the museum was helpful for them to process what happened on that day. They said that the museum helped them feel more connected to Patriot Day events and helped them to connect with the stories that are often told of this day.

Note: The museum is currently closed on Tuesdays.

Ride the Staten Island Ferry

Looking for another free New York City experience? Instead of paying for a water taxi or ride to the Statue of Liberty, hop on the free Staten Island ferry (boat dock at Battery Park).

Perfect for young kids who don’t need to make a stop at the statue to appreciate it, or for families who have done a previous statue tour, the Staten Island Ferry offers iconic views of the harbor without the ticket price. Grab dinner from a street vendor and eat it on the ferry!

Visit the High Line and Hudson Yards

Starting at 14th Street, the High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated linear park, greenway and rail trail created on a former New York Central Railroad on the west side of the city . The High Line has nature walks, dance performances, food vendors, and art installations all year long. It’s a great place to take photos

There are a ton of restaurants, bakeries, chocolate shops, and food vendors right underneath the railway in  Chelsea Market.  

At the top of the High Line at 34th Street, you’ll find  Hudson Yards , a new part of New York City with skyscrapers, a shopping mall, a performing arts center called The Shed, and The Vessel- a 150-foot shiny sculpture made from 154 interconnected staircases, which are fun to climb.

Explore Times Square and Go to a Broadway Show

Times Square can be touristy and busy (ok, it’s always touristy and busy), but it’s still worth a stop on your New York City trip.

In addition to seeing a Broadway show (family-friendly shows are often available), there are lots of kid-friendly restaurant chains and activities to keep them interested including Bowlmore Lanes (with 48 lanes & family specials), Hershey’s Chocolate World, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and The Disney Store.

For last-minute Broadway tickets, head to the TKTS booth under the red steps at Times Square. Available tickets for shows are listed on their display boards, including the prices.

Discounts are typically near 20-50% off the price of purchasing in advance, although not all shows are available. You can download the TKTS app to see what is available before making the trek to stand in line.

Hot tip: Broadway fans must make a stop at the newly-opened Museum of Broadway . The immersive museum walks you through Broadway history with the sets, props, costumes, sounds, and historic moments that made Broadway shine. We spent about 2 hours in the Instagram-friendly museum and can’t wait to come back when exhibits start rotating in.

Spend the Day in Central Park

Our favorite place in New York City is Central Park . If you’re not sure where to start in this massive green space, try Heckscher Playground , with its soccer fields, water features to play in during warm weather, and play equipment. You’ll find food vendors nearby, and the playground has almost a carnival-like energy to it during the summer months.

For a quieter venue, head to Conservatory Water , where kids can rent motorized sailboats to navigate on the pond, and parents can get a well-deserved coffee at the cafe adjacent.

Make time to stop at the Central Park Zoo , a historic institution filled with fascinating creatures and a cool rainforest exhibit. If you visit in the the summer don’t miss Shakespeare in the Park at the outdoor Delacorte Theater .

Explore the park in your own way, staying to the pedestrian streets and letting kids stop to play at will. We love the large boulders on the West Side!

Take the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Find Your Roots at Ellis Island

You can’t go to New York City and not take a trip to the Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty . For our family, the tour of the immigration museum at Ellis Island was even more rewarding than the statue, due to the excellent way this museum is set up to show the experience of America’s many immigrants.

Both attractions are free, but do require a ferry ticket from Statue Cruises (the only ferry that make stops at the attractions). You’ll depart from Battery Park, and kids will enjoy the ferry ride as well as the historical sites.

Advanced tickets are required to climb to the top of the statue on a first-come, first-served basis , but if you don’t get them, don’t sweat it: seeing the statue from the water actually offers the best views. Plan to spend several hours at Ellis Island, especially with school-aged kids and teens.

Where to Eat in NYC with Kids

Dining during a New York City vacation can get expensive (hint: hit hot dog carts for a quintessential New York experience that doesn’t break the bank). Markets like Chelsea Market are great places to grab quick meals as well.

When you don’t want to eat standing up, try 5 Napkin Burger or Shake Shack for a NYC original, kid-friendly atmosphere that’s still upscale for adults too.

If you are in the Lower East Side, head to Little Italy for a shared pizza on the patio of any number of ‘hole in the wall’ restaurants lining the street. Lombardi’s is the original: they first brought their pizza technique to America and have been serving it up since 1905.

Near the park, Alice’s Tea Cup is a fan favorite, as is Dylan’s Candy Bar . Near the American Museum of Natural History, we highly recommend brunch at Cafe Lalo (you might remember it from the movie You’ve Got Mail ).

If you are in Battery Park, don’t miss Fraunces Tavern . This restaurant and museum is where George Washington went with his troops after winning the Revolutionary War!

Where to Stay in NYC with Kids

Accommodations in New York City that fit your family’s size and budget can be challenging, but great locations can be found! Consider a boutique hotel: they abound in the city, and often provide unique extras that will enhance your urban experience, such as fun doormen or complimentary walking tours.

I recommend focusing your hotel search in Midtown Manhattan: families staying in this area will be safe, and in easy walking distance of the subway, as well as destinations such as Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central.

Day Trips from NYC with Kids

The hamptons and long island.

For a day trip out of the city that still has the idyllic New Yorker feel, take a day to explore the Hamptons. Insider tip: it’s not just mansions of famous New Yorkers!

Start in the Long Island town of Freeport , or Smithtown , or visit Montauk . The Montauk Point Lighthouse is a historic park and open year round, with the museum open May through September for a summer visit.

Fire Island National Seashore is another good option for families wanting to get away from urban areas for a day, as is Cold Springs Harbor.

Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley area is under two hours from Manhattan, and has a lot to offer visiting families. In Wappingers Falls, the Stony Kill Environmental Center has something for families every weekend, with a distinctly rural feel.

Kids can see animals and learn about ecology and agriculture. At Bear Mountain State Park , kids can swim, hike, and explore the Hudson Highlands. The entire Hudson Valley region feels a world away from New York City; you’ll just need a rental car (or your own) to get there. You can even see Sleepy Hollow, New York!

Mt. Laurel, New Jersey

Not far from the city, Mt. Laurel is the home of CoCo Key Water Resort , a fun day trip for young kids or anyone during poor weather. When you need to get away from it all and just let the kids play, this is the place. Families can come just for the day, or spend a night.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
