Tanzania safari: when to go and where to stay

In  Tanzania , it is still possible to find space and vast horizons and experience true wilderness. A Tanzania  safari  offers much more than the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle searching for fresh grazing on the Serengeti’s open plains. While the front-row drama of sleeping in a mobile tented camp in the path of the migration should not be underestimated, the  Serengeti ’s scenic beauty, high concentrations of resident game, and the geological wonders of the nearby Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro can be enjoyed year-round. To really lose the crowds, southern Tanzania’s Ruaha and Nyerere (Selous) national parks are hard to beat, especially for getting off the vehicle for guided  walking safaris , boat  cruises , and tag-and-release fishing.

Throughout the country, permanent lodges and tented  camps  in privately protected areas are the most sought-after beds to book, especially in high season, as vehicle numbers are finite and sightings feel exclusive. Safari outfits, like Singita and Legendary Expeditions, are helping to preserve millions of hectares of wilderness in concessions previously given over to hunting. By investing in these privately protected areas, they are also helping to displace poaching and secure important wildlife migration corridors. The  best camps  are constantly being tweaked and reinvented to keep up with the demand for space and comfort, from repositioning tents to maximise privacy and views to taking back-of-house operations entirely off-grid.

To close out the ultimate East African safari, a  beach holiday  on an unspoilt stretch of the coast or one of the islands in the Zanzibar archipelago is a chance to soak up the sun along with Swahili culture. AndBeyond’s Mnemba Island remains a winner.

Where to go on a safari in Tanzania

Tanzania’s well-travelled northern safari circuit, which includes the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks, has the highest concentrations of big game in Africa, sustained by reliable water sources and fertile volcanic soil. It’s the obvious place to go on a first trip or if planning an unhurried return trip out of season. For all the migration action in the Serengeti, a mobile or seasonal camp is an excellent choice to keep up with the herds. Singita’s permanent Mara River Tented Camp and Legendary’s seasonal Nyasi camp are located in the Lamai triangle, a highly prized wedge between the Mara River and the Serengeti’s boundary with  Kenya’s Masai Mara . There are only a handful of camps in the triangle, which means that outside of park hours, it is the most exclusive and convenient place to be during the river-crossing season (see ‘when to go’). Before booking any camp, finding out whether it is within easy reach of one of the known river crossing points is a good idea.

During the summer calving season, Legendary Expeditions operates Nyasi South, moving it from its northern location to an exclusive campsite in the private Maswa concession. It is part of a vital wildlife corridor between the busy Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park.

Throughout the year, the western Serengeti is known for large resident lion prides, East African antelope species, like topi and Thomson’s gazelle, and big herds of buffalo and elephants. So reliable are year-round wildlife encounters in this area that Mila Tented Camp has taken up a permanent position close to the Grumeti River.

The eastern Serengeti’s boulder-strewn grasslands were closed to tourism and reserved for research until a decade ago when Asilia Africa was the first to be granted permission to open a seasonal camp called Namiri Plains, that later became a grander, permanent version of the original. This is big cat territory known for incredible leopard, cheetah and lion sightings.

A place of short-grass plains, crater lakes and volcanic peaks, the 30,000-hectare Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera and a haven for thousands of zebra, wildebeest and other herbivores, as well as lion, black rhino and elephant. Follow hiking and birding around Empakaai Crater Lake with a local village visit to learn about the Maasai way of life.

Lake Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions and incredible birding, including seasonal flocks of flamingoes.

Ruaha National Park is bigger than the Serengeti but with only a fraction of the visitors. Underrated Nyerere (previously called Selous) has a mighty river at its centre, hippo-filled lakes, dense woodland and open grasslands ideal for walking. Around Lake Tanganyika, chimp trekking in Mahale can be combined with fly camping in Katavi National Park.

When to go on a Tanzanian safari

The dry months ( June  to  October ) are the best time to explore the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara for concentrations of animals around water sources. The annual migration is not confined to one season but a perpetual cycle of movement that includes the famous high-season river crossings in the northern Serengeti ( July  to October), the herds moving far south to the short, grassy plains for the calving season (approximately December to March), then gathering in the central Serengeti ( April  to June) for the rutting season, before finally moving north again to complete the circle. The summer calving season, when thousands of young are born daily, offers more intense predator activity than the treacherous river crossings in the north. With climate change, the long and short rainy seasons in East Africa are no longer as regular or predictable as they once were, which could impact the movement of the animals. Even so, camps in prime locations will likely book up a year in advance. The days are hot during the so-called green season ( November  to March), and afternoon thundershowers settle dust. It is a good time for photography, also made easier by less crowded sightings.

Where to stay on safari in Tanzania

Singita sasakwa lodge, grumeti private reserve.

A spectacular location on top of Sasakwa Hill sets the tone for Singita’s flagship lodge in the Grumeti Private Reserve, bordering the Serengeti National Park. Everything about staying in this gracious homestead with its deep, wraparound verandahs and rolling lawns feels elevated, including the grand, artfully curated interiors featuring African art and intricately carved East African antiques. More home than a hotel, the lodge has nine grandly furnished cottages with one, two or three bedrooms and a four-bedroom villa. From sumptuous afternoon teas on the verandah to wine-paired, fresh produce-led tasting menus prepared by graduates from the on-site cooking school, the attention to detail is meticulous.

Best for: With tennis courts, rim-flow private pools, a spa , gym and boutique, Singita provides the ultimate soft landing in East Africa for first-timers and families or a grande finale at the close of a rigorous East African circuit.

Jabali Ridge Lodge, Ruaha National Park

The remote setting for this luxury lodge is the 20,226-square-kilometre Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania, which is 40 per cent bigger than the Serengeti but with a fraction of the visitors. The Great Ruaha River serves as a lifeline for the park’s wildlife, and large lion prides and leopards are common along the banks as they await their prey. Jabali’s eight futuristically shaped suites, open-to-the-elements main lodge, infinity pool and spa are tucked between enormous boulders on a kopje with 360-degree views over the park’s giant baobabs that stretch for as far as the eye can see. There is also a private villa for families with its pool.

Best for: An action-packed safari with a final-frontier feel, epic sightings of elephant and buffalo herds, walks, and those unbelievable baobabs, which flower after the rainy season.

AndBeyond Grumeti River Lodge, Grumeti River area, Western Serengeti

AndBeyond’s location in the western Serengeti has always been prime - about as close as you can get to the Grumeti River - but now it has a statement lodge worthy of the views, which have been perfectly framed at the entrance to the dining and lounge areas spilling onto cascading decks where you can see boulder-sized hippos jostling for space in the river, particularly during the dry, low-water season (winter months).

Best for: Those who love all-African designer digs that include many local crafts and support community empowerment projects. Ceilings are woven from banana fronds, while bold kitenge cloth is used innovatively to add joyful colour.

Mila Tented Camp, Western Serengeti

Brilliant year-round wildlife viewing is the reason why this low-key, explorer-style tented camp went from being a seasonal camp to occupying a prime spot close in the Nyasirori area to the Grumeti River – just five well-appointed tents and a two-bedroomed family tent that don’t feel decorated, despite being the height of safari chic, so that the surrounding landscapes remain the hero.

Best for: Disconnecting in nature, with the exclusivity of a private vehicle as standard, and plenty of space to claim as your own in camp - even at mealtimes, which are a highlight.

Namiri Plains, Eastern Serengeti

Namiri (Swahili for ‘big cat’) is an isolated savannah east of the Seronera airstrip closed to tourism for over 20 years to allow researchers to study cheetah, lion and leopard hunting behaviour on the plains. Migration access is between November and June, depending on the rains. Namiri Plains’ stylish tented accommodation (just eight suites) offers every creature comfort, wraparound views, and unrivalled access to the area’s big cat-dominated plains.

Best for: A blow-out honeymoon safari, thanks to the remote, romantic setting and unparalleled privacy. Each tented suite has an outdoor bath on a private deck - stargazing done right.

Mwiba Lodge, Southern Serengeti

Deep in a 52,000-hectare private wildlife reserve, this is one of the most sophisticated yet isolated lodges in the southern Serengeti, the place to be when the ungulates are calving. It offers exclusive access to authentic cultural experiences, such as immersive bush walks with the nomadic Hadza tribe. The ten canvas-and-glass suites are positioned between candelabra and fever trees, overlooking a river where buffalo and elephant come to drink, or are perched on stilts on a boulder-strewn koppie high above the open plains. As the land is private, guests can also do guided walks and night drives, enjoy sundowners on the edge of the escarpment, or take a helicopter flip.

Best for: For those who crave off-the-beaten-track adventure in a remote locale without giving up indulgences like a fine wine cellar, yoga pavilion, gym, or a  clifftop pool  with a shaded gazebo for lunch with a view. From December through March, you can see migrating herds kicking up dust in the distance while taking a dip!

Singita Faru Faru, Grumeti Reserve

Far Faru is a seductive mix of 1940s botanist’s camp, Scandi sophistication, modern African design, and carefree, barefoot Zanzibar vibes in the bush.

The camp’s nine stone, canvas and glass-walled suites include a family suite for four and a two-bedroom villa with its own pool. Another property that dispels the myth that the Serengeti is only worth visiting during the migration, it offers fantastic year-round game viewing out on the plains or right in front of camp at the busy waterhole. The pool deck is the best place to dine casually on delicious, globally inspired small plates and there is a spa and fitness centre to balance out indulging in Singita’s award-winning wine list.

Best for: Those who appreciate all the refinements that Singita brings to safari, along with action-packed game viewing. Another top honeymoon choice.

The Highlands, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Far from the madding crowds is an excellent way to describe the geodesic-domed tents of this solar-powered, impressively low-eco footprint camp in a quiet location on the Olmoti Crater with exclusive access to the main crater via the northerly Lemala Gate, which is on the opposite side of the crater to most of the other lodges - fewer vehicles, easier early morning access. Design-wise, the eight tents and main area take inspiration from the Scottish highlands and traditional Maasai bomas and has a ski lodge ambience. Maasai-inspired tartan, cowhide rugs, and purple heather-hued throws keep things cosy, along with wood-burning stoves in winter.

Best for: Additional excursions, like the Mount Empakai caldera hike taking in waterfalls, gnarled trees, flowering orchids, and a beautiful soda lake.

Forest Chem Chem Camp, Tarangire, Northern Tanzania

One of three camps in Chem Chem’s 20,000-hectare Burunge private concession, a conservation buffer zone between Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks established to resurrect a vital elephant migration corridor. Very private, this little bush camp beneath a grove of fever trees is for exclusive use only and comes with a private vehicle and guide. Guests are encouraged to take it slow. The three vintage-style tents sport luxurious linen on wrought-iron four-poster beds where you can drink coffee in the morning while watching a herd of 50 elephants padding silently through the unfenced camp site.

Best for: Making up your safari as you go along, from walking with a Maasai warrior along the Tarangire River to interactive, open-fire cooking with a private chef who makes a very good chocolate cake.

Ever since Doctor David Livingstone ventured into the interior of Africa in search of the origins of the Nile River, people from around the world have been curious about the animals and landscapes on this beautiful continent.  In many ways, the Tanzania that Livingstone explored has changed a great deal since his time, but in other ways, it is much the same. 

The same incredible animals that he ran into and some of the beautiful landscapes that he traversed can still be enjoyed by visitors. Many of those landscapes are on my Tanzania safari itinerary and are some of the best places in all of Africa to see those incredible animals that Livingstone encountered.

Located in Southeastern Africa, the country of Tanzania is a wildlife traveler’s dream.   It is home to many of Africa’s most amazing animals, has some of the world’s best wildlife viewing destinations, and is home to Africa’s tallest mountain. 

In my Tanzania safari itinerary, I am going to help you start planning your safari trip to Tanzania by outlining some of the country’s top parks, helping you decide what time of year to plan your trip, and showing you what my recommended Tanzania safari itinerary looks like.

Before You Go on Your Tanzania Safari

Planning a trip to Tanzania to go on safari can be an incredibly exciting experience, but it can also be a little stressful and overwhelming if you haven’t been to Africa before. If you are planning your first big safari adventure, let me first tell you how excited I am for you. Going on safari, especially in an amazing country like Tanzania, will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. It only took one visit to Tanzania to get me hooked, and I am sure the experience will be the same for you.

Choosing Which Parks in Tanzania to Visit

One of the biggest decisions that you will need to make when starting to plan your Tanzania safari itinerary is which of Tanzania’s parks and wildlife areas you will visit during your trip. In this Tanzania safari guide, I include a map of all of Tanzania’s protected areas and my choice of Tanzania’s top national parks to visit.

I also outline each of these parks and discuss what the pros and cons of visiting each park are, what animals you can expect to see when you visit each park, and what time of year it is best to visit each park.

However, as you start to put together your Tanzania safari itinerary, you might have certain animals, landscapes, or events that you want to be sure to see while in Tanzania. For this reason, I have put together this quick reference guide to help you determine which park(s) are best for seeing certain things.

Several of Tanzania’s national parks consistently have elephants for visitors to spot while on safari. The Ngorongoro Crater is a great spot to see large bull elephants, who migrate to the crater to feed between breeding seasons.

Ruaha National Park is also a great place to spot large groups of elephants while on safari, though your best chance of seeing them in the park is during the dry season when animals are forced to congregate near the remaining watering holes.

If you want to see elephants up close in the wild, then the park you want to make sure you have on your Tanzania safari itinerary is Lake Manyara National Park . The wildlife in the park is more concentrated than in other parks, so up-close animal experiences are more common.

However, the best park to see elephants in Tanzania is undoubtedly Nyerere National Park and the nearby Selous Game Reserve. The park is on the annual elephant migration route and you will find thousands of elephants in the park during their migration.

If spotting lions while on safari in Tanzania is your ultimate goal, then there are plenty of great destinations for you to choose from to accomplish that goal. Except for Gombe Stream, Mahale Mountains, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro National Parks, the rest of the parks that I highlight in this Tanzania safari itinerary offer a lot of great opportunities to spot lions.

As the home to the Great Migration, the Serengeti National Park has some of the highest concentrations of lions in Africa. If you would like a unique lion-viewing experience, I would also suggest checking out Lake Manyara National Park and its famous tree-climbing lions.

However, the best place to visit to be assured of spotting lions while on your safari is the Ngorongoro Crater . With grazing animals in the crater year-round, the lion prides that occupy the crater are typically very easy to find.

As one of the most endangered animals in Africa, the Black Rhino isn’t an easy animal to find while on safari almost anywhere in Africa. Lucky for you, Tanzania is home to one of the best destinations in Africa for viewing Black Rhinos in the wild.

Because it is an enclosed and protected space, the rhinos living in the Ngorongoro Crater are much better protected from poachers than other locations in Tanzania and the rest of Africa. That is why the crater is one of the few places left in Africa where you can view these beautiful creatures in the wild.

For those travelers who have their heart set on seeing wild chimpanzees while on safari, then you will want to be sure to add either Gombe Stream National Park or Mahale Mountains National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary. Both parks offer incredible wild chimpanzee viewing opportunities but are also much more remote and harder to get to than some of the other parks I highlight in this itinerary.

Gombe Stream was made famous by Jane Goodall, who did most of her chimpanzee research in the park, but Mahale Mountains is my favorite pick for chimpanzee enthusiasts. Not only does it offer some of the best chimpanzee tracking in Tanzania, but there is a greater diversity of other wildlife in Mahale Mountains National Park than there is in Gombe Stream National Park.

While the number of lions and leopards in the infamous Serengeti number is in the thousands, there are only a few hundred cheetahs to be found in the famed park.

There is a chance that you will spot these magnificent predators while on safari in the Serengeti National Park , but you have a far better chance of spotting the speedy cats if you add Ruaha National Park or Tarangire National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

Ruaha National Park is an especially good place to spot cheetahs, despite the large number of other predators, because the park is so large and it is easier for them to stake out territory away from lions and leopards.

If you love giraffes, then you will be delighted to know that most of the top parks in Tanzania offer excellent opportunities to view these beautiful animals. You probably won’t see giraffes when visiting Gombe Streams National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.

Also, chances are that you won’t spot giraffes inside the Ngorongoro Crater, but you should see them in the surrounding areas of the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. In my opinion, the best parks for spotting wild giraffes are the Serengeti National Park , Lake Manyara National Park , and Tarangire National Park , in order of likelihood of spotting the animals.

Next to black rhinos, African wild dogs are some of the rarest animals that you will be able to spot while on safari in Tanzania. To see these rare and beautiful creatures, you will need to include the right parks on your Tanzania safari itinerary.

The best parks for seeing African wild dogs in Tanzania are Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park . If you visit the parks during the dry season when the animals are more concentrated around the watering holes, you have a good shot of spotting wild dogs in these parks.

Spotted hyenas are another animal that you can find in many of Tanzania’s national parks and protected areas. Chances are, you won’t see these unique carnivores in Gombe Streams National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park, and they are rare in parks like Kilimanjaro National Park and Arusha National Park because of their proximity to the city.

However, in parks like the Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater , and Ruaha National Park , you have an excellent chance of spotting many hyenas.

Few animals in Africa are as incredible to see in the wild as the mighty hippopotamus. These massive and beautiful creatures spend most of their days wallowing in water to protect their delicate skin and then come out at night to feed on grass.

If you would like to see hippos while on safari, I would be sure to add a park with water to your Tanzania safari itinerary. Because it has a constant supply of water year-round, the Ngorongoro Crater would be the top park on my list for seeing hippos.

Other parks that offer a great opportunity to see these African wildlife icons include Lake Manyara National Park , Nyerere National Park , and Arusha National Park .

If you are interested in seeing the Great Migration while on safari in Tanzania, then you will definitely want to make sure that you add the Serengeti National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

The Great Migration, in which upwards of 1.5 million wildebeest and other grazing animals follow the rain between the Masai Mara in Kenya down into the Serengeti in Tanzania and back each year, is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife viewing experiences.

In addition to being able to see millions of grazing animals in one place, the migration also attracts droves of Africa’s big predators to the Serengeti to feast upon them.

The migration reaches the Serengeti around December each year and the animals typically leave by March, so if you want to see the migration in Tanzania, you will want to plan your trip during that time.

Tanzania is a country that is certainly not short on beautiful and breathtaking landscapes. All of the parks that I have included in this guide are incredibly beautiful and worthy of adding to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

However, if incredible landscapes are what you are after, then I would suggest considering Kilimanjaro National Park and Arusha National Park while in Tanzania. In addition to the wildlife that can be found in these parks, both parks offer unique and beautiful landscapes for visitors to enjoy.

Kilimanjaro is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, which is Africa’s tallest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. Arusha National Park is home to the incredible Mount Meru and has a fig tree that is so large that you can drive a car through a tunnel in its trunk.

Deciding When to Plan Your Tanzania Safari

The parks that I have highlighted in this guide are located in different regions of Tanzania, so the best times to plan your Tanzania safari itinerary are going to vary slightly depending on which parks you visit. 

For instance, parks like Gombe Streams, Ruaha, and Nyerere are much worse to visit in the rainy months of March and April than some of the other parks in Tanzania. 

If you would like to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, then you will want to coordinate your visit for when the Wildebeest are in the Serengeti, which tends to be between December and March.

However, for the most part, the best times to go on Safari in Tanzania is going to be in July through October.  These are the driest months of the year and the wildlife is much easier to spot because it is typically concentrated around the watering holes. 

Keep in mind, that these are also typically the busiest months of the year for safari in Tanzania, so you might want to target the shoulder months of June or November to have your best shot at good weather and lighter crowds.

Best Times to Plan Your Tanzania Safari Itinerary

My recommended tanzania safari itinerary.

To hit all of the parks on my recommended list, I suggest that you target 6-9 days for your Tanzania safari itinerary, depending on whether or not you want to spend the optional days at the start or end of your trip to visit Kilimanjaro National Park, Arusha National Park, or both. 

Using the Tanzania safari itinerary that I outline below, you will be able to hit all six of the parks on my recommended list.  Keep in mind, that your permit for the Ngorongoro Crater will only allow you 24-hour access to the crater, so you will want to plan to arrive on night four and spend the night near the crater so that you can start your safari first thing in the morning.

If you would like to plan a shorter trip, I would suggest cutting out a stop at either Arusha National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, or both.  If you would like to spend a longer amount of time on Safari, I would suggest either adding stops at one of the parks not outlined on my itinerary or adding an extra day in the Serengeti.

Tanzania’s Protected Areas

Over the decades, the country of Tanzania has done an incredible job of identifying the most important wildlife areas within its borders and protecting those lands.  If you want to go on safari in Tanzania, you certainly won’t have a shortage of destinations to choose from. The country is home to:

• 18 National Parks
• 10 Major Game Reserves
• 2 Marine Park Reserves
• 13 Forest Nature Reserves
• and 3 Game Controlled Areas

While each of the country’s protected areas is spectacular in its own way, I have chosen to focus this Tanzania safari guide on my list of the top parks and conservation areas in Tanzania that I recommend visitors include on their Tanzania safari itinerary. 

However, that doesn’t mean that other parks, such as the incredible Katavi or Mikumi National Parks, aren’t worth exploring if you have the time. If you would like an overview of Tanzania’s parks and other protected areas and where they are located, I have included a map below for you to review.

The Top 10 Tanzania Safari Destinations

To help you narrow down which parks and wildlife refuges to visit during your safari trip in Tanzania, I have narrowed down the list of options to my Top 10 Wildlife Viewing Areas in the country for you to review.  In some cases, I included areas that have very high concentrations of wildlife to see.  The Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks fall into this category. 

Other locations, like Gombe and Mahale National Parks, were chosen because of the unique wildlife viewing opportunities that they afford travelers. 

Finally, parks like Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Parks were chosen both because of their close proximity to the city of Arusha and the unique landscape features that are found within the parks. For an overview of my top 10 recommended safari destinations in Tanzania, please refer to the map below.

Serengeti National Park

Home to the Great Migration and with the most diversity of wildlife that you will find almost anywhere in Africa, the Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations in the entire world.  It is one of the most coveted safari destinations in Africa, and for good reason. 

It has some of the most authentic wildlife viewing opportunities, is one of the best places to spot Africa’s big predators, has excellent accommodation options, and even offers hot air balloon safaris.  Best of all, it is one of the cheapest parks in Tanzania to visit.

If you are going to add the Serengeti to your Tanzania safari itinerary, I would recommend taking the time to tour both the North and the South ends of the park.  It is a big park and you will enjoy seeing as much of it as you can.  The Serengeti borders the Masai Mara in Kenya, so if you want to really extend your safari itinerary, you can book a tour of the Masai Mara on the tail-end of your Tanzania safari.

Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Crater is perhaps one of the best places in all of Africa to see all of the Big Five animals of Africa in one day.  This includes the increasingly endangered black rhino.  Because the crater is protected by steep walls and has available water year-round, the grazing animals in the crater don’t need to migrate. 

This attracts all of Africa’s big predators, who can also be found in the crater all year long.  The only downside to visiting the crater is that it can get quite busy during the peak safari season, so you will need to be sure to book your safari well in advance if you want to add the Ngorongoro Crater to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

Tarangire National Park

With the second largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania outside of the Serengeti, Tarangire National Park is definitely a park that you will want to have on your Tanzania safari itinerary.  It isn’t located on the traditional safari route, and therefore typically left off the itinerary for shorter safaris. 

This means that it is typically much less crowded than the other big parks in Tanzania.  During the peak safari season, the wildlife is typically very concentrated within the park, which means there are excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. 

The park even offers night safaris, which is an incredible experience.  If you want to see Tarangire National Park, I would recommend avoiding the wet season as the wildlife tends to be dispersed inside the big park and can be difficult to spot. 

Lake Manyara National Park

What Lake Manyara National Park lacks in size, it makes up for in the show.  There are as many as 11 different ecosystems within this small national park, which means there is a wide variety of wildlife that calls the park its home. 

The big draw in Lake Manyara is the famous tree-climbing lions.  Few other places in Africa can you see lions who climb as often as at Lake Manyara.  In my opinion, that alone is worth adding Lake Manyara to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

However, one of the more underrated aspects of the park is that it offers probably the best opportunity in Tanzania to see elephants up close.  The wildlife in the park is typically concentrated in small pockets, which makes getting close much easier. 

Kilimanjaro National Park

Home to Africa’s tallest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing Mountain, Kilimanjaro National Park is a park unlike others that you will find in Tanzania.  Most who visit the park do so to climb the mountain, but it is also a decent safari location if you are looking to add on a park either at the beginning or end of your Tanzania safari itinerary.  It is far less likely that you will spot any of Africa’s big predators, such as lions, in the park, but you do have a good chance of seeing other wildlife.

Arusha National Park

One of the biggest draws to visiting Arusha National Park is its proximity to the city of Arusha and Kilimanjaro National Airport, which makes it a great option if you would like to add on a park either at the beginning or the end of your Tanzania safari itinerary. 

It is relatively easy to get to and has some truly breathtaking landscapes that you can explore.  One of my favorite spots inside the park is the giant fig tree that has a tunnel carved in it you can actually drive your car through.  The park may not offer as good of opportunities to lions as other parks, but you do have a great chance of spotting other wildlife.

Gombe Stream National Park

Although Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s smallest parks, it offers visitors some unique and spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities.  Made famous by Jane Goodall, who performed much of her Chimpanzee research in the park, Gombe National Park is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot wild Chimpanzees. 

Because of its remote location, you will either need to take a long bus or car ride from Arusha to get to Gombe National Park or take a bush flight.  The park typically isn’t crowded, which is a perk, but the amount of accommodations is limited.  Because of this, you will want to book your stay well in advance if you want to add Gombe Streams National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

Mahale Mountains National Park

One of the most underrated national parks in Tanzania is undoubtedly the incredible Mahale Mountains National Park .  In addition to having the best Chimpanzee tracking experience in all of Tanzania, the park also offers fishing and kayaking tours, spectacular beaches to enjoy, and a greater variety of wildlife for visitors to see than nearby Gombe National Park. 

However, its remote location means that you will either need to take a long car ride or a bush flight to get to the park and the accommodations near the park are limited.  In addition, Mahale Mountains is also one of the more expensive parks in Tanzania to visit.  Because of the limited accommodations, you will want to be sure to book your safari well in advance if you want to add Mahale Mountains National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary. 

Ruaha National Park

While it is no longer Tanzania’s largest Park, the beautiful Ruaha National Park still offers visitors some of the wildest and most authentic wildlife encounters in Tanzania.  The park is famous for its breathtaking beauty, incredible ancient baobab trees, picturesque rivers, and dramatic landscapes. 

If you are coming to Tanzania to see African Wild Dogs, which are quite rare, then adding Ruaha National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary may be your best bet to see them.  The park is also home to some unusual antelope species that are harder to find in some of the country’s other parks. 

Because of its relatively remote location, Ruaha National Park doesn’t get as busy as the more famous parks in Tanzania.  However, the park also doesn’t have as many accommodation options as the busier parks do.  Because of that, you will want to book your safari in Ruaha well in advance to ensure you have a place to stay. 

When you visit, I will make sure to target the dry season in Tanzania.  During the wet season, wildlife can be much more difficult to spot because the animals are not congregating around watering holes. 

Nyerere National Park

One of the newest national parks in Tanzania, Nyerere National Park is now also the country’s largest.  It was formed from a large portion of what was the northern region of the Selous Game Reserve.  The large expanses of raw African wilderness in the park really showcase the beauty of the African savannah. 

If you love elephants, then you will definitely want to add Nyerere National Park to your Tanzania safari itinerary as it is one of the best places in Tanzania to witness the annual elephant migration.  If you visit during the right time of year, you will get to see thousands of elephants in the park. 

Nyerere National Park is Very Remote

The park is rather remote, so you will either need to take a long drive or bush plane to get there, so plan accordingly if you want to visit.  The park is also in a malarial region of Tanzania, so you will want to ensure that you have proper mosquito netting and insect repellent for your safari. 

When you visit, I will make sure to target the dry season in Tanzania.  This is another park where wildlife can be much more difficult to spot because the animals are not congregating around watering holes during the rainy season.

Tanzania safari guide – where & when to go, and what to see.

Going on  safari in Tanzania  is relatively straightforward. The country has a well-developed tourist offering with easy and frequent access by plane, good internal flight options, a large variety of accommodation and English spoken as a second language by almost everyone. Bear in mind that if you’re planning to visit parks in the west of the country most roads are not tarmacked, making your safari weather dependent.

Tanzania’s geography is one of the most varied in Africa, and ranges from the Indian Ocean in the east to Africa’s highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro in the north, huge central plains and the great lakes to the east. All of this makes for multiple unique habitats, many of which are protected wildlife areas in the form of national parks and game reserves.

Tanzania is home to an estimated 4 million animals of over 430 species of classic African wildlife and over 1,000 species of birds.  Wildlife of note in Tanzania includes large elephant and lion populations, as well as huge herds of grazers in the northern plains.

The two most popular routes for overland safaris in Tanzania are the  “northern circuit” and the “southern circuit”, and both take in a selection of Tanzanian national parks. The northern circuit is the more popular of the two – with dense, accessible wildlife and more crowds and higher prices – and takes in Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha and Kilimanjaro National Parks, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The southern circuit covers Ruaha, Mikumi,  Udzungwa Mountains National Parks and the Selous Game Reserve, with the same breadth of wildlife but spread over a larger, more wild landscape, and sees a smaller number of tourists.

Whilst self-drive safaris are an option in many national parks in Tanzania, this can be complicated by the need for an official guide. Given this fact, you’ll no doubt need to do a little research into the most suitable safari tour companies in Tanzania before arrival in the country.

Balloon safari over the Serengeti

The Serengeti is one of the best balloon safari destinations in the world. As with any safari, game viewing can’t be guaranteed, but with an experienced captain and guide on hand to spot the game below, you’ll have a very good chance of seeing a variety of wildlife from a whole new perspective.

Big five spotting

Along with Kenya , Tanzania is home ot the classic African safari, with big five spotting near the top of every visitor’s wishlist. There are a number of world-class national parks in Tanzania to do just that, with both Lake Manyara and now the Serengeti hosting unique tree-climbing lions, for some extra wildlife wow-factor.

Dual-destination safari + beach

One of the beauties of taking a safari in Tanzania is easy access to the picture-postcard white sand beaches of Zanzibar. Many Tanzanian tour operators will help arrange your trip to work on your tan with a pre- or post-safari break on perfect Indian Ocean beach.

Best to safari in Tanzania

Tanzania has a year-round tropical climate, though there are some large regional variations. The coast is generally warmer and more humid than the interior, with the monsoon rains bringing two rain periods – the long rains from March to May and the short rains from November and December.

The best time to take a safari in Tanzania is from June to October when the rains have finished and the temperature is at its coolest. However, this is peak safari season with busy national parks and safari lodges in high demand. If you can put up with muddy – and occasionally impassable – roads, then the short rain season means decent discounts on safaris across Tanzania and usually decent wildlife viewing.

National parks in Tanzania

Tanzania is about as good as it gets when it comes to national parks for safaris. From desert-island national parks in Lake Victoria in the north, to mountainous chimp-filled forests around Lake Tanganika in the west, to the world-reknown Serengeti and Ngorogoro parks, are plenty of places to get your safari fix And if it’s the big 5 you’re after, they’re on offer in most national parks in Tanzania.

The great migration – one of natures greatest shows – takes place each year in northern Tanzania with 1.5 million wildebeest and 1 million other grazers and predators travelling the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Mahale National Park

Get way out west at the Mahale National Park, a little visited park on the banks of Lake Tanganyika and home to several families of habituated chimpanzees.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Descending from the rim of the Ngorongoro crater to the wildlife packed crater floor below is a feeling like no other. Views stretch across the 8,290 km sq conservation area , created 3 million years ago, and home to a broad and dense selection of African species, most of which are unable to leave the crater. It’s one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa for a reason!

Selous National Park

At 50,000 km sq Selous is the second largest conservation area in Africa , yet also one of the more remote safari options. The density and diversity of the wildlife here earned the park UNESCO world heritage status, and it’s famed for its huge concentration of elephants, estimated at up to 40,000. The best time to visit Selous is June to October, which is the high season, but still far less crowded that most other East African national parks.

See the migration in the Serengeti

The big-ticket park is the 12,000-square-mile Serengeti, home to the famed wildebeest migration and a healthy population of big cats: lions, leopards and cheetahs. During peak season— July and August—when the famous wildebeest river crossings coincide with northern hemisphere summer holidays, the park can be very busy.

There are four main regions in the Serengeti; the Western Corridor, the Seronera Valley, Lobo/Kogatende in the north, and the Southern Plains.

There are several private reserves and conservancies around the Serengeti that offer the same wildlife experience but without the crowds—such as the Grumeti Reserve—but you’ll have to pay top dollar to stay there.

At the heart of the Serengeti lies the Seronera River and surrounding valley. This is a good area for year-round big cats and grazing herbivores.

The northern regions of Kogatende and Lamai, on the banks of the Mara River, are further off the beaten path and are good for catching the famed river crossings during summer months with far fewer tourists than across the border in Kenya's Masai Mara .

Tarangire, just south of the bird haven Lake Manyara, is the antidote to the crowds of the Serengeti. There are large herds of elephants, huge baobab trees, lions and even wild dogs. In the dry season, the park has a particularly high concentration of mammals. July to October are the best months for big game viewing, outside these months the park is pleasantly quiet.

As with the Serengeti, there are some private reserves around the national park, offering more exclusivity, generally at a higher cost.

Incredible views at Ngorongoro

The other major tourist attraction in the Northern Circuit is the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thought to be the world’s largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera that isn’t filled with water. The crater is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, including elephants, giraffes, lions and black rhinos.

It's a year-round location for wildlife, although the crater gets crowded during peak months. Aside from its wildlife, the wider conservation area is also a great place for hiking and trekking .

There are no camps inside the crater, but some perch up on the rim, with incredible views. It’s also possible to stay further out in the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area and do a day-trip into the crater. Look for accommodation close to the access road to maximise your time.

Tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara

Just to the north of Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park is a narrow, deeply forested strip of land that sits in the shadow of a dramatic wall in the Great Rift escarpment.

The lake is a haven for some 350 species of waterbirds and the park is famous for its population of tree-climbing lions, as well as one of Tanzania’s most-studied elephant populations. In addition to wildlife drives, walking safaris are possible, and there’s a treetop walkway that takes you up into the forest canopy.

Off the beaten track in Nyerere

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is one of the largest protected areas in Africa at 19,000 square miles – bigger than Switzerland. With only a few camps, it feels far more remote than the northern parks.

As well as lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, hippos and buffalos, Nyerere is a key area for endangered wild dogs. Poaching has led to a massive decline in species such as elephants – so although there are many animals to see, they’re not as densely populated as in the Serengeti, for example.

What really sets Nyerere apart is the sheer range of activities you can do here: walking, boating and photo safaris, fly-camping, the list goes on. It costs a pretty penny, especially compared to the more touristy northern circuit, but if you're looking for something truly different, this may be for you.

Walking safaris in Ruaha National Park

Wild and remote Ruaha, Tanzania's largest national park, is home to scattered baobabs, grasslands and rolling hills. Along with Nyerere it's the main stop on Tanzania's 'southern circuit' although it draws a fraction of the visitors as the country's northern hotspots.

Arguably better for wildlife spotting than Nyerere (and more affordable too), Ruaha has a whopping 11 per cent of the world's wild lion population, along with massive herds of elephants and grazers.

There are cheetah, leopards and wild dogs here too, all along with relatively few tourists. You’ll find a mixture of luxury lodges and basic fly-camping operations for walking safaris – the park's speciality.

Katavi – Tanzania's hidden gem

The third largest national park in Tanzania, but with a fraction of the visitors, Katavi feels very distant from the likes of the Serengeti. Indeed, it is estimated that Katavi gets as many visitors in an entire year as the Serengeti draws per day .

In the dry season, there are great wildlife spotting opportunities, with big herds of buffalos, lions, elephants and lots of plains game (topis, zebras and impalas).

With just a handful of small camps in the park and in the adjoining game reserves of Rukwa, Luafi and Lukwati, there will be few other vehicles with which to contend.

See chimpanzees at Mahale Mountains

On the sandy banks of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is a mountainous park known for its habituated chimpanzees you can visit in the forest. There are other primates – from vervets to the red colobus monkey – and the driest months (August to October) are the best time to trek through the forest.

There is a scattering of camps and lodges from where you can organise chimp trekking , including one ‘barefoot luxury’ option, Greystoke Mahale, and a government-run backpackers at the park HQ.

Bush Rover Migration Camp

The quirkiest mobile camp, and absolutely one of my favourites places to stay anywhere in Tanzania, is Bush Rover Migration Camp. This consists of six double-story standing tents built around the converted Land Rovers used to transport them between different locales. The ground-floor toilet and shower for each unit is actually built into the Land Rover, while the upper floor comprises a canvas bedroom with a balcony from which you can safely watch passing wildlife or stargaze after dark. The camp sets up in the southern Serengeti over December to March for the calving season, before relocating the Western Corridor to catch the northward migration over June to mid-July, then heading further north, along with the wildebeest, to the Mara River area over August to October.

Serengeti Safari Camp

Among the absolute top of my recommendations for mobile camps is Nomad Tanzania's Serengeti Safari Camp. This top-end camp moves around five times per season to keep up with the constantly changing wildebeest migration . Accommodation is in classic safari-style canvas tents, and the guides are second to none. You'll want to stay around three of four nights here, and the camp is usually within close reach of an airstrip for easy access.

Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge

One of my all time favourites, Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge sits on a stunning beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, on the edge of Mahale Mountains National Park. This place is a real hidden gem, far from the crowds and bustle of northern Tanzania’s honeypots.

The lodge comprises just ten thatched beach tents set on wooden platforms for incredible views over the lake. There's a real sense of wilderness here, but with all the comforts you need, including ensuite showers, and even Wi-Fi! The real highlight, though, is the wildlife. Mahale Mountains National Park is famous for its chimpanzees, but it's not just chimps! Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, butterflies, and all sorts of birds as you hike through the forest. In the evenings, I like to unwind by the campfire with my fellow guests, listening to the sounds of the wilderness and gazing at the star-studded sky.

Manyara Best View Lodge

One of my favourite places to stay in all of Tanzania, Best View Lodge is situated at the top of the Rift Valley Escarpment with incredible views in all directions. I’ve sat on the veranda here, gin and tonic in hand, gazing at some life changing sunsets: the vast escarpment wall in one direction, farms below, and Lake Manyara ahead glistening in the evening light.

The lodge is perfectly situated for exploring Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater all from the same base, which is one of the reasons I recommend it to almost all our guests. And when you’re back from a day of walking safaris and game drives, the staff are wonderfully warm and helpful, the rooms are comfortable and the food is delicious. You can’t really go wrong here, it’s one of the best.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

If there's one obvious drawback to Tanzania's most exclusive lodges, it’s that they tend to be priced out of the range of all but the deepest of pockets. So here’s a shout out to Serena, a long-serving East African hotel chain that runs a number of larger lodges which hit a popular sweet spot between comfort and affordability. Ngorongoro Serena ranks among the very best of these, with its centrally heated rooms and scenic location on the western crater rim. I often recommend this lodge to serious wildlife enthusiasts, because it is the closest option to the main descent road into the crater, making it particularly well suited to early morning game drives.

Ngorongoro Crater Camp

The relatively chilly highland climate that characterises Ngorongoro Crater’s scenic rim means that most lodges there have a very indoorsy feel. An exception is Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, which comprises 10 stilted standing tents set in an atmospheric forest of lichen-draped flat-top acacias. To be honest, I was a bit worried about the cold when I arrived here, but I needn’t have been: the tents are all equipped with gas heaters and electric blankets, and very snug at night. The camp’s location is perfect for game drives in the early morning, which is the best time to explore the crater

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

The most sumptuous and exclusive lodge overlooking Ngorongoro Crater is also the oldest, having started life in the 1930s as a humble hunting lodge. Today the playful Maasai-meets-Versailles architecture and décor – a knowingly kitsch blend of classical, baroque, African and colonial influences – makes &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge stand out as one of the most original and popular safari lodges anywhere in East Africa. What the lodge’s earliest gun-toting colonial patrons would make of all this tomfoolery is anybody’s guess. But – highland mist permitting – they would doubtless approve of the view over the world’s largest volcanic caldera, which remains every bit as spectacular as it was 100 years ago.

Tarangire Safari Lodge

This is my favourite place to stay in Tarangire National Park. Yes, there are smarter and more exclusive alternatives, but none that comes close to Tarangire Safari Lodge when it comes to location. This clifftop lodge offers a mesmerising view over long stretch of river where elephants maintain a near-permanent presence. And as if that were not enough, it also has an unbeatable location for early morning game drives on the park’s most rewarding wildlife viewing circuits. The first lodge to open in Tarangire, way back in 1985, it has been owned and managed by the hands-on Simonson family ever since, and it remains exceptional value by comparison to almost any other lodge in Tanzania.

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

I love the upmarket Tarzan experience offered by the 10 luxury treehouse suites that comprise &Beyond's Lake Manyara Tree Lodge. Set in a luxuriant mahogany forest, this exclusive lodge is also arguably the best base for Lake Manyara safaris, not least because it lies so deep in the park you can explore roads seldom visited by people staying elsewhere. The lodge’s guides know the park backwards, which greatly increases the odds of locating Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions.

Hatari Lodge

The only lodge set within Arusha National Park, Hatari is the ideal place to spend a couple of relaxed nights at the start or end of a northern Tanzania safari. It stands in a picturesque forest, frequented by giraffe, waterbuck and monkeys, at the base of Mount Meru (Africa's fifth highest massif). The German owner-managers Jörg and Marlies Gabriel have invested considerable thought and passion in the characterful décor. They also actively promote a slow food policy based on using organic ingredients sourced from local home gardens. If you have the energy, I’d recommend organising a guided day walk into Mount Meru’s spectacular semi-collapsed caldera. More sedately, sundowner drinks at Hatari are often capped by views of snow-capped Kilimanjaro.

Namiri Plains

Over the course of numerous safaris to the Serengeti over the past 30-odd years, few lodges have blown me away quite as much as Namiri Plains did on my most recent visit. This ultra-exclusive new lodge forms part of the highly-regarded Asilia chain and offers accommodation in ten spacious stone-and-canvas cottages decorated with local basketwork. For me, what really makes Namiri Plains special is that it reliably offers high quality cheetah and lion sightings in an corner of the Serengeti that's pleasingly remote from other lodges.

Greystoke Mahale

Arriving at Greystoke, you could be forgiven for thinking you've washed up on a jungle-swathed Indian Ocean island. This idyllic beach camp stands on Lake Tanganyika, a beautiful inland sea that ranks as the world's longest freshwater body, and reportedly the least polluted. Greystoke is the perfect base for tracking chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains – on two previous visits, these hirsute apes have actually walked through camp – and it also offers dhow trips out onto the lake. In common with Chada and Sand River, Greystoke is owned by Nomad Tanzania, a locally-based company that operates several of the country’s most alluring and exclusive bush camps

Chada Katavi

When it comes to that classic bush feel, few safari camps can match Chada. Set in remote and little visited Katavi National Park, this low-footprint camp comprises just six standing tents scattered in a tall acacia glade overlooking a vast floodplain alive with buffalo, hippo and other wildlife. The tents are very spacious, but simply decorated, with old-school bucket showers and eco-toilets. Chada really comes alive at night: I’ve had elephants nibbling on fallen acacia pods all around my tent here, and almost invariably heard hyenas whooping and lions grunt-roaring across the floodplain.

Sand Rivers

Probably my favourite lodge in Nyerere National Park, Sand Rivers overlooks a wide, sandy bend in the Rufiji, Tanzania's largest river. The open-fronted stone-and-thatch suites here are simply stunning, and there's also a tempting freeform swimming pool set under a massive baobab tree. Whether you explore by boat, in a 4x4, or on foot, there's plenty of wildlife to be seen in the area, and the guides are exceptional. Aside from the exceptional river view, an appealing aspect of Sand River is that it stands some distance from any other camp and too deep into the park to be reached on day safaris from outside.

Roho ya Selous

Nyerere is Tanzania's largest national park, extending across 30,000-plus square kilometres, and it offers a more exclusive safari experience than the better-known Serengeti. A great base for exploring it is Roho ya Selous, which means ‘Heart of Selous’ in reference the park’s former name Selous Game Reserve. Set on the shore of Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous consists of eight luxury standing tents spaced along a tract of evergreen waterside forest. The lodge stands in the heart of a rewarding wildlife-viewing circuit where you are sure to see plenty of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and might well get lucky with lion and African wild dog. A highlight is boat trips on the lake, which is home to large numbers of hippo and plentiful waterbirds.

Jabali Ridge

The view from Jabali Ridge is unforgettable. Set on a rocky hill, this stylish boutique lodge offers sweeping vistas across the vast baobab-studded plains of Ruaha National Park and wide sandy arc of the seasonal Mwagusi River. The accommodation is every bit as memorable, comprising as it does eight luxurious cottages built into and around the large rounded granite boulders at the hill’s summit. Jabali Ridge is a superb base for game drives in Ruaha, a relatively off-the-beaten-track safari destination that ranks as Tanzania’s second-largest national park and one of the best for carnivores such as lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. Night drives are often very rewarding and the cuisine is truly outstanding.

Lake Natron Camp

This extraordinary wilderness camp stands on the edge of the blinding white salt flats that enclose caustic Lake Natron. This starkly beautiful Rift Valley setting is dominated by the brooding presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Tanzanian owner-managers Åke and Nangini Lindstrom have designed the camp to be low impact, and the spacious standing tents are shaded by camouflaged netting that helps keep the interior cool whilst reducing the visual impact. Lake Natron Camp stands on a Maasai concession, it only employs local Maasai people and it funds several community projects. Within the concession, you’ll find 120,000-year-old fossil human footprints and a spring-fed stream where you can swim while white-lipped tilapias nibble at your dead skin (a sensation I found oddly addictive once I got used to it).

Ndutu Safari Lodge

Wildlife photographers, filmmakers and big cat enthusiasts talk in hushed tones about Ndutu Safari Lodge. Founded in 1968 close to the seasonal lake for which it is named, this down-to-earth lodge offers access to a part of the Serengeti-Ngorongoro ecosystem famed for its high densities of carnivores. Ndutu is an excellent base for catching the wildebeest calving season in February, but large herds of grazers are usually present from December through to April, and there's good cat viewing all year round. It also remains one of the best value lodges in this part of the world, offering accommodation in 34 simple stone-and-thatch cottages with private verandas, and meals in a convivial thatched restaurant where I’ve often seen genets creep around the rafters at night.

Tanzania has three main safari regions: the North, Southern Tanzania, and Western Tanzania.

By far the most popular safari region is the north of Tanzania, easily accessible from Kilimanjaro International Airport or the domestic Arusha Airport. This region is home to the famed Serengeti, along with Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, which together constitute the popular "Northern Circuit," Tanzania's safari best-seller.

Far less visited than the north, the parks of southern Tanzania suit those who’ve already been to the Serengeti, or popular Big Five destinations elsewhere, and are seeking a wilder experience. There are two major destinations here: the Selous and Ruaha.

Western Tanzania is the least visited of the three main safari regions. Because it’s not easily accessible, it’s costly to travel here. It’s roughly a four-hour light aircraft flight from the main hubs of Arusha or Dar es Salaam. There are two scheduled flights a week, but these are also quite expensive; driving will take a couple of days. But if money isn’t an issue, you’ll be rewarded with a remote safari experience largely to yourself. Many travellers will come out west to track the chimps of Mahale.

Your questions, our expert answers, we can't travel during the migration river crossings, are there other impressive spectacles at other times of year.

Yes! I think calving season during the wildebeest migration is just as spectacular as the more famous river crossing period.

This period runs from December to March around the Ndutu Plains to the south of Serengeti. During this time the wildebeest and zebra stampede over the plains preparing to give birth to thousands of calves. At the same time the big cats are on the lookout for an easy snack. With vast numbers of animals, their sounds and smells, all of the little calves, and the big cats on the lookout... it's theatre on an epic scale and you cannot be disappointed. And the extra benefit is that it's a much shorter drive here than to see the river crossings.

What are your recommended alternatives to safari in the Serengeti?

In my opinion there's not much that tops Serengeti National Park. As far as the wildlife and scenery goes there's nowhere better for a safari in Tanzania.

The only downsides I can think of are that visiting the Serengeti can involve lots of driving (to see the migration river crossings takes two or three days driving), also it can be expensive and, at peak times, busy (although far quieter than neighbouring Masai Mara in Kenya !)

For those who prefer less driving, I'd recommend Ngorongoro Crater as a good runner up to the Serengeti. Ngorongoro's compact size (the crater is only 20 kilometres across) means you can see more with much less driving. All the big five can be seen here and as a bonus you have have a better chance of seeing rhinos here than in Serengeti.

If you want to escape all crowds and get off the beaten track, I highly recommend Ruaha National Park. Located in the midwest of the country, it surprises with outstretched savannahs and plenty of animals, together with some amazing lodges. The downside (or upside, depending on what you're looking for) is the distance – it’s pretty far from everywhere.

And finally if you're looking for a lower cost safari in Tanzania you could book flights to Dar Es Salaam, and from there do a safari in Mikumi National Park. Relatively small, it still offers open savannah with all your usual safari suspects except for rhinos, along with the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

For the highest chance of seeing the Big Five, consider booking your safari at a Tanzania safari lodge in the Serengeti National Park or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , both in the northern circuit. Ruaha National Park , in the southern circuit of Tanzania, is a great alternative option.

Traditional morning and afternoon game drives are offered in all of Tanzania . The northern circuit is known for its classic safari experiences, with early morning and afternoon game drives being the norm.

Walking safaris and night drives are permitted in Tarangire and some parts of the Serengeti, but they are far less common.

Morning and afternoon game drives, walking safaris with expert guides, and night drives are all standard in both Ruaha and the Selous Game Reserve . Selous specialities include boat trips down the mighty Rufiji River and fly camping expeditions.

If you are looking for a location that caters for honeymooners , couples or single travellers – Tanzania is a great option.

However, if you’re travelling with kids you might want to look for an area in Tanzania that caters to children and has more kid-friendly activities .

What Can You Afford?

There are a lot of factors that go into a Tanzania safari cost, such as location , time of year , and level of comfort – but there are some general guidelines to follow for your Tanzania safari budget.

Attempting to plan your safari on your own is not always less expensive or even possible. For your itinerary, you will need your agent’s specialized knowledge of ground handlers, light aircraft schedules, and transfer companies in many places.

• When you use an agent, you get a single ‘all-inclusive’ price. • Because of the favourable rand-dollar exchange rate, South Africa remains one of the most affordable safari destinations. The rainbow nation is an excellent ‘introduction’ to safari for first-time visitors to Africa. However, it also provides excellent rewards for seasoned safari-goers.

Should You Do the Northern or Southern Circuit of Tanzania?

You will not have a worse or better experience depending on which circuit you choose on your African safari. Both Tanzanian itineraries are fantastic safari destinations, and each has something to offer everyone.

In the end, it all depends on what one wants to take away from their Tanzania holiday experience. So here is the ideal Tanzania safari guide on which circuit you should choose.

Northern Circuit  – Pros

The majority of the well-known game viewing Tanzania safari tours and safari camps are located in the north . Such as the Serengeti National Park, and maybe even the Ngorongoro Crater.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks are also part of the Northern game-viewing circuit.

The great wildebeest migration  – which includes over 2 million wildebeests and zebras – is in full swing here, following the rain for nutrient-rich grass.

In the northern circuit also lies Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest natural caldera , with an ecosystem that includes open savannah , wetlands, and a forest.

Northern Circuit – Cons

Depending on the time of the year and chosen area of visit, one is likely to get traffic from other safari vehicles in the same region.

Serengeti is super popular, and attracts plenty of tourists on a Tanzania safari, so it might get a bit  crowded .

Depending on the sighting, you can expect to share your experience with quite a few other people.

Southern Circuit – Pros

The Southern Circuit is not as busy as the Northern Circuit. The very positive side of this is that one gets to share their Tanzania safari experience with much fewer tourists, providing a greater feeling of exclusivity .

The South also offers excellent connections to the Main hub Dar es Salaam, making it a lot easier to connect to international flights.

Southern Circuit – Cons

The downside is that you  won’t find wildlife in the same large numbers as in the Serengeti, making it more challenging to find the big five animals in one area.

One would have to travel to other places to see that, which is why we don’t recommend it for someone who hasn’t been on safari yet and still wants to see the big five.

The Southern Circuit is the best experience for someone who has seen the big five and knows what animals they would like to see.

If you’re visiting Tanzania for the first time, or even if you’ve never been on a safari before, we highly recommend the Northern Circuit . Wildlife expectations are much higher here, including the big five animals, predator cats and more, immersed in world-famous national parks.

If you’ve been to Tanzania before or want to experience a  Tanzania safari in less crowded areas, the southern circuit is the obvious choice.

Tanzania is a beautiful country to explore and go on safari. It is undoubtedly one of our favourites . You will have the time of your life, whether it is your first safari or even your ninth.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania

There is no best time for a safari in Tanzania! The Serengeti is surrounded by the Great Migration, which can be easily followed.

The Mara River crossing takes place in June and July , and the dry season brings more animals to the waterholes.

After the rainy season, January to February brings fewer cars and greener landscapes; wildebeest give birth and predators are plentiful.

The cooler months of June to August are perfect for those looking to escape the sweltering African sun.

Mount Kilimanjaro is icy all year, but the Indian Ocean coast is warm, so you can escape there to warm up.

Abundant wildlife, exotic islands, colorful markets and friendly people –  Tanzania has all this and more just waiting to be explored.

Wander cobbled streets on Zanzibar Island , marvel at an elephant silhouetted against a baobab tree in Tarangire park , clamber up steep slopes to encounter chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains park and throughout, enjoy getting acquainted with Tanzanians and their culture. 

Whatever you’re hoping to do, this guide will help you plan the perfect time for your visit, with tips on everything from the seasonal wildebeest migration to climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and catching some festivals.

June through September is the best time for wildlife-watching

June through September is Tanzania’s cooler, dry, high season. The wildebeest are hoofing it northwards on their migration towards the greener grasses of Kenya’s Masai Mara, Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes are mud-free and Zanzibar’s beaches beckon. Overall, it’s a wonderful time to travel, with the only real downsides being peak prices and larger crowds.

In July and August, as the dry season progresses, animals begin to concentrate around dwindling water sources and vegetation becomes more sparse. Wildlife is increasingly easy to spot and safari season is at its prime. Southern Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park is full of animals, as is western Tanzania’s Katavi , with massive pods of hippos fighting for space around the few remaining mud wallows. In Gombe and Mahale Mountains parks, chimpanzees move lower down the steep slopes, and tracking them is usually easier.

The dry season is also ideal for trekking on Mt Kilimanjaro and on Mt Meru, in Arusha National Park , and for hiking in northeastern Tanzania’s Usambara Mountains. On the coast, temperatures and humidity are somewhat lower and the islands are crowded, but delightful.

Especially for safaris, Kilimanjaro treks and island getaways, it's essential to book in advance.

October to February is perfect for birding and fewer crowds

In October, the start of Tanzania’s shoulder season, the weather stays sunny and mostly dry, making this another fine time for wildlife-watching, but with only a fraction of the high-season crowds. Parks such as Tarangire, that are at their best in the late dry season, are particularly good. October also brings jacarandas to bloom, especially in the north around Moshi and Arusha and in the southwest around Mbeya; it’s magnificent to stroll beneath their purple canopies on a carpet of lavender blossoms.

In November, as the short rains get underway, mango season begins – watch for buckets of ripe fruit along the roadsides from late November. This is also the start of peak birding season, as the first of the migrants begin arriving from the north.

During the Christmas and New Year's holiday period – roughly from mid-December through the first week in January – prices temporarily skyrocket, but on each side of this, many lodges and camps offer appealing shoulder-season rates. 

Tanzania’s hottest temperatures are generally in February, especially along the coast, but birding is at its peak countrywide and the southeastern Serengeti is full of activity, with the wildebeest calving season in full swing. February is also the best month for seeing the orchids in Kitulo National Park , and for admiring the surrounding highlands, which are blanketed with wildflowers. 

In northern Tanzania, the warm, dry period between December and February is ideal for Kilimanjaro treks, while on the coast, the shoulder season months are optimal for spotting whale sharks around Mafia Island .

March to May is the best time for green landscapes and lower prices

Mid to late March marks the start of Tanzania's main rainy season, when heavy downpours turn roads and hiking trails to mud. Many lodges, especially along the coast and in the southern and western safari circuits, close and those that do stay open often offer significant discounts. 

Yet, despite the wet, there’s still plenty of sunshine, and if your focus is on getting to know Tanzania’s cultures, and exploring away from the crowds, this can be an ideal time. Landscapes across the country are brilliant green and visitor numbers are at their lowest. Somewhere between late April – as the rains begin to taper – and early June, the wildebeest start their long march northwestwards from their calving grounds in the southeastern Serengeti, and brightly-hued birds are easy to spot, the males resplendent in their colorful breeding plumage.

Anytime is festival time

No matter when you travel to Tanzania, there’s likely to be a festival or event somewhere in the country. Early February on Zanzibar brings the Sauti za Busara festival, while late February in Moshi is the community-oriented Kilimanjaro Marathon . Back on Zanzibar, watch for the Zanzibar International Film Festival in late June and Mwaka Kogwa festivities in late July. A highlight around October or November on the mainland is the Bagamoyo Festival of Arts and Culture .

Tanzania is home to beautiful sweeping ocean views, delectable food, and stunning resorts for all kinds of travelers. Many visit the enchanting destination to go on safari and witness wildlife species from elephants to birds in their natural habitat. There are many safari destinations to choose from, from the renowned Serengeti National Park to places off the beaten path like Tarangire National Park . Whether you are visiting to view the great migration or other magnificent sightings while on safari, this guide will assist with learning what to pack, when to visit, and how to stay safe while on safari in Tanzania.

The Best Time for a Safari in Tanzania

The best time to visit Tanzania is between late June to October, when there is little to no rain. With little rain on the home front, the dry period is an incredible time to visit Tanzania as most animals are required to flock to the watering holes, making it a prime time to spot animals. The weather is also colder and less humid during this time, making it ideal for enjoying long periods out in the bush on a safari, taking in views of the animals.

Nonetheless, it really does depend on which activities or even animals you are interested in seeing during your safari drive. If you are interested in visiting during the great migration in Tanzania, December through March is best for optimal viewing of herds in northern Tanzania and newborn babies. However, in June, zebras and wildebeest start moving north and are mating season, so that’s a high time to visit.

What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania

There are a host of things that should be on your list while packing for an African safari in Tanzania. The most notable of course include items for a first aid kit, different clothing items to layer depending on the time of year of your visit, and electronic devices to capture all of your exciting moments while on safari.

Toiletries and First Aid 

Most safari vehicles will be well-equipped with at least a basic first aid kit. However, it is always a good idea to be over-prepared than under. Some items that should be in your own personal kit include:

• Mosquito repellant which includes DEET
• Malaria pills
• Hand sanitizer
• Sunscreen (minimum SPF 30+)
• After-sun cream
• Diarrhea medication
• Painkillers (for ex. Aspirin)
• Antiseptic cream

 Most people automatically think of dressing for comfort and the outdoors while on safari. Typical clothing items can include khakis, a lightweight jacket or fleece sweater to keep warm in the evenings, and comfortable trekking shoes. It’s also a good idea to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect yourself from mosquitos and a possible case of malaria. Camouflage is also a good option while out in the bush to blend in with nature. Below are additional items that you may want to add to your list:

• Raincoat or jacket
• Long shorts
• Several pairs of socks
• Hiking boots
• Warm skull cap
• Wet swimsuit bag
• Long sleeve shirts
• Cotton t-shirts
• Lightweight cotton pants
• Fleece/lightweight sweater
• Flip flops/sandals (for the camp grounds)
• Warm pajamas
• Several pairs of cotton underwear
• Detergent (for hand washing any items)
• Plastic or zip lock bags for dirty laundry items
• Shewee for the ladies (comes in handy for long game drives)

 An epic safari experience in Tanzania should be well-documented, so don’t forget the following electronic devices to capture everything you may see while on safari, from elephants to lions, and hippos:

• Camera or smartphone
• Memory cards
• Portable chargers
• Flashlight (to get around the grounds or tent in the evenings)
• Tablet or e-reader 

Safety in Tanzania

 Overall, Tanzania is a safe country to visit. It is even more so safe if you book an organized safari through a tour company, where a knowledgeable driver and guide are there to assist you every step of the way. Theft and pickpocketing are common in bigger cities, of course, but with a bit of know-how and wits, most visitors will be fine. While viewing animals on the drives, your guides’ main duty is to keep you safe at all times. General tips for good measure are never getting too close to animals and keeping your arms inside of the vehicle or 4X4 at all times.

It is recommended to be up to do date on your vaccinations before traveling to Tanzania. Additionally, the risk of malaria is high throughout the country except at higher altitude mountains over 2,000 meters, including the Ngorongoro Crater rim, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and parts of the Eastern Arc Mountains. Many safari parks are high-risk zones, so take the necessary precautions to avoid malaria transmission while on safari, which includes making an appointment with your doctor or nearest travel clinic to discuss the need for anti-malaria medication.

 Depending on which national park you decide to visit in Tanzania, expect to see a wide range of wildlife while exploring either wetlands, grasslands, or lush forest terrain. Most notably, many parks in Tanzania will allow you to glimpse the Big Five , including leopard, lion, buffalo, elephants, and rhino. Tarangire National Park, in particular, is known for three regional species of animals: the fringe-eared oryx, the gerenuk, and the mongoose. Additional animals often spotted there include zebra and wild buffalo.

While visiting Lake Manyara National Park, one can spot hundreds of baboons, pink flamingos, and the famed tree-climbing lions of the park. Most are pretty familiar with the Serengeti National Park, which is home to loads of different wildlife species includes millions of wildebeests, thousands of zebras, and Africa’s largest population of lions. Everything you need to know before going on safari in Tanzania

I recently returned from Tanzania, a country I didn’t necessarily have on the bucket list, but which surprised me very much, mainly due to the five-day safari experience. I’ve been on a safari in Yala Park in Sri Lanka , but it doesn’t compare.

I activated my adventurous spirit in a safari through the most important safari parks in Tanzania . Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara are the four places where I managed to complete the mission that probably any traveler who arrives on these lands has: to see THE BIG FIVE.

The four nights spent in the middle of the wilderness made me exclaim Hakuna Matata! No worries, you won’t become a meal for the lions . I also visited a tribe of Maasai, I learned everything about coffee, and I have many stories to tell that will soon make their place on the blog.

It’s time to start with the first one, more precisely, an extensive list of questions and answers I asked myself when I organized this adventure.

I didn’t find everything you need to know before going on safari in Tanzania then, so I challenged myself to do this for those of you who want to have this experience in Tanzania.

Some essential things to know about Tanzania

With an area of 947,000 square kilometers, Tanzania is one of the largest countries in East Africa. The capital of Tanzania is Dodoma , although the largest city is Dar es Salaam .

Famous for the perfect national parks for safaris and the beaches bathed by the Indian Ocean and the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, we can say that Tanzania is a destination that is well worth visiting. 

Even though the official language is Swahili, most people can also speak and understand English, especially those who work in the tourism industry. So, conversations should not be a problem if you decide to come here.

And if we talk about Swahili, you have to remember the following basic expressions:

• Jambo! – Hello!
• Karibu! – Welcome
• Asante Sana! – Thank you!

Do you need a visa for Tanzania?

In general, tourists need a visa to enter Tanzania; you can get the visa online ten days before your flight or get the visa on arrival.

The visa costs $50, but for Romanian citizens, it is free due to an old and close friendship between Ceausescu, the former ruler of Romania, and Julius Nyerere, the former president of Tanzania.

Why choose Tanzania as a safari destination in Africa

There are many reasons why Tanzania is a great safari option . First of all, the diversity of animals is enormous. Hundreds of animal species, including the big five (buffalo, rhino, lion, elephant, and leopard), but also vast herds of zebras and wildebeest, cross the endless plains of Serengeti every day.

Secondly, the vegetation seen in the documentaries on National Geographic and Animal Planet will surely delight you. You will see acacia and baobab trees everywhere you look, and they are amazing.

Ngorongoro Crater is a unique place on earth, formed more than 2 million years ago, when a volcano erupted and collapsed on itself. The scenery is dreamy, and the road from the top of the crater to the bottom looks pretty damn good. It is also where you are most likely to see the black rhino.

Unlike other African countries, Tanzania is relatively safe in all respects, which is a good enough reason to choose it.

How to choose the safari company

There are several ways to choose the safari company for your trip to Tanzania. Either ask your acquaintances who have already gone through this experience and were satisfied, or search on Facebook groups (at a simple search on Tanzania safari keywords, you should discover a few), or read travel blogs or consult some specialty sites.

I tried all the above options until I made a final decision, and that’s because I wanted to make sure it was the best choice, especially since it’s not a cheap trip at all. Although you can go on safari with a slightly lower budget, being the first time I was going on safari for five days, I chose comfort.

Of all the methods to search for the company, the most efficient was the specialized websites. They are actually a kind of search engine that brings together all companies and their offers. Therefore, I recommend going to either bookallsafaris.com or safaribookings.com.

Put some filters to sift the results, then look carefully at each offer. My suggestion is to keep at least three options in mind and send a message to each company to request a quote and tell them what you want.

Everything can be customized: budget, itinerary, and the type of accommodation you want. You can even opt for luxury accommodation on one of the nights, while you can stay in the tent the other nights. It all depends on personal preferences and the budget allocated to this experience.

We chose Gosheni Safaris, a highly rated company with a lot of experience, and we were pretty satisfied.

How many days do you need for a safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is one of the best countries globally when it comes to safaris and the opportunity to observe wild animals in their natural habitat. Some of the great parks of Africa are in this country, and the most popular are Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire.

The sizes of these parks are enormous, as well as the distances between them. You have to spend at least three days to see a little of each. And if you want to have extensive experience, then five days would be ideal.

The sky is the limit for those with a bigger budget and passion for this type of travel. Our guide told us that some people prefer to stay even for a month, although rarely happens. Most are satisfied with 5-10 days.

We chose the option of 4 nights, respectively, five days. I must mention that the four nights were inside the parks; they do not include the two nights spent in Arusha.

We had enough time to explore Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara during the five days, precisely in this order. Although, if I were to go again, I would give up on one of them.

Do you need vaccines and other medical treatments before the safari in Tanzania?

Only if you come from Kenya, Uganda , Rwanda, or Burundi the yellow fever vaccine becomes mandatory and must be presented to the authorities.

Otherwise, it’s only recommended. There are also other vaccines you could take for this type of trip, but a doctor would inform you better than me.

The same goes for malaria. You can take medical treatment before and during the trip, as far as I know, but it is best to ask a doctor. I have no medical studies; I’m just telling you that they are not mandatory for Tanzania and that the level of caution remains at everyone’s choice.

What you must have are sprays against mosquitoes and Tsetse flies. There are many, and they can be dangerous, so you should apply and reapply DEET sprays throughout the day for high protection.

How safe is this experience?

Throughout the days spent both on safari and in Tanzania in general, I never felt in danger. As long as you take your protection measures, use the sprays I keep insisting on, sun protection and do not consume tap water, you should be fine.

The animals can’t attack you as long as you listen to the guide’s instructions and don’t get out of the car and don’t walk outside from the campsite.

This is pretty much all you need to know before going on safari in Tanzania about safety.

How much does it cost to go on safari in Tanzania?

When it comes to costs, no matter how relative things are, going on safari in Tanzania is not cheap. Several factors contribute to the final price.

The main criteria would be the number of days, the type of accommodation, the plane tickets, choosing a private or group tour, and the company you collaborate with.

For example, a classic 4-day safari includes a visit to the three popular parks: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Well, prices can start at just under $ 1000 per person, this without including plane tickets, and you would have to stay probably in regular tents, without too many facilities.

On the other hand, you should share the same safari car with strangers, if you don’t come with a group of friends. This can be interesting and fun or vice versa. It depends on what kind of people you meet there. If you want to stick to a relatively small budget, it may be worth the compromise.

On the other hand, there is the luxury version, with 5-star premium accommodation, with an infinity pool right next to the elephants. I am convinced that you have seen these kinds of safari pictures on Instagram.

Such a very Instagrammable accommodation would be Four Seasons Serengeti . Besides this accommodation type, you will have delicious and quality food, drinks, and snacks during the game drive and a private tour. Such an experience exceeds a budget of around $ 4000 per person.

At the same time, there is the middle option. This option includes a private tour and excellent accommodation in lodges or tented lodges. The rooms are big and comfortable, have non-stop water and electricity, and a chef who is cooking for you.

Even the lunch taken in the parks is also prepared by the chefs here, and the food is warm. This option comes with prices starting at $ 1500 and can go up to $ 3000 for a four-day trip. In the picture is the accommodation I stayed for two nights in Serengeti, Acacia Serengeti Luxury Camp.

Also worth mentioning is tips, a common custom throughout Tanzania. Even in the contract, it appears specified, and it is not insignificant at all. It is highly recommended that the tips be around $ 15-20 per person for each day of safari.

Tips are also expected at the accommodation units, from the chefs, receptionists, and people who carry your luggage. I’m not saying it’s bad or good.

Indeed, those people work and deserve to be paid, but I consider it an important detail that you need to know before going on safari in Tanzania. However, is rarely mentioned on other blogs. In short, you can expect an extra cost that can reach several hundred dollars.

The perfect safari itinerary in Tanzania

I told you earlier that I would eliminate one of the four places I visited. Well, this is Lake Manyara. Although it should be famous for flamingos and lions climbing trees, not only did I not see any of it, but I saw almost nothing in general.

I must specify that 90% of the roads inside the park were under renovation, which turned the trip into an ordeal. Vast piles of soil were placed in the middle of the road, and our guide slalomed between them.

I thought that we would flip at some point, but fortunately, it did not happen. Thank you, Zadock, for your driving skills!

In my opinion, the park should have been completely closed to complete the works because it was a lost day for us anyway. The only animals we managed to see were a few baboons, elephants, and a mini herd of zebras.

Therefore, the ideal safari itinerary in Tanzania, from my point of view, would include a day in Tarangire, two in Serengeti and two in Ngorongoro, beautiful parks abounding in animals and savannah vegetation, with beautiful baobabs, dwarf shrubs, and acacia trees.

And if you have several days, you can add Nyerere and Ruaha, located further south.

What to wear on safari

From a chromatic point of view, the only colors you should avoid when it comes to a safari outfit are blue, black, and very bright and intense colors, which stand out far too quickly.

It is ideal for wearing environmentally friendly colors, beige, brown, cream, white, and savannah green or animal and vegetable prints.

The materials should be as comfortable as possible and cover as much of the body as possible. It would be preferable to wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun and necessarily sunglasses.

I will write an article dedicated to how I chose to dress in the safari, but now I leave you with two pictures as an idea until then. The same advice applies to both women and men.

The best time to go on safari in Tanzania

The best time to visit this wonderful part of Tanzania depends on the season and the density of the animals.

The climate in Tanzania is divided into two major seasons: the dry season and the wet season. If you want to avoid the rains, but have slightly drier vegetation, then it is best to go in June – October.

If your goal is to witness the great migration in Serengeti, you will be able to do this best between June and August.

But if you want to have bigger chances of seeing the animal cubs, most of them are born at the beginning of the year, January-February. However, you could still have opportunities to see them at other times of the year.

Summarizing all the criteria, I would say that the best time for a safari in Tanzania is June-July. While probably the worst, because there is a lot of heavy rain, is March-April.

What to pack for a safari in Tanzania

The one thing in planning the trip that gave me some headaches was the luggage. It’s not my favorite thing to do, regardless of the trip, but especially this time.

First of all, make sure you add some mosquito sprays that contain DEET in a high percentage. Then don’t forget any medications you may need or use regularly. If you have them on the recipe, be sure to add the recipe as well.

Sun protection is also mandatory, considering that you will spend even 12 hours a day in the car, and you will not be protected from the intense rays of the sun, regardless of the month you arrive here.

Given the situation we are still in, bring hand sanitizer and antibacterial wet wipes. Of course, these may be necessary regardless.

Put in your luggage a hat, a scarf, sunglasses, a camera with a lens suitable for safaris, comfortable shoes, and light outfits, which look good in pictures. You should add binoculars, but you better ask beforehand if your guide has and can offer you.

Let’s not forget the adapters. It is unclear what kind of sockets are used in Tanzania because I have come across three different types. So it is best to take some universal adapters with you.

Don’t forget the battery for the camera, although I give you good news: there are sockets in the car!

On which airport you should land for safaris in Tanzania

You have two options. Either you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport or the domestic airport in Arusha. Safari usually starts in Arusha, being closer to the main parks.

So if you don’t plan to climb the mountain, it would be best to land here and stay at a hotel in the city, to start the safari the following day.

However, the distance from Kilimanjaro airport to Arusha is not very long, only one hour and a half. Regardless of where you land, Arusha or Kilimanjaro, you can agree with the safari operator to offer you transport to the hotel. In general, it’s included in the price.

What animals can you see on a safari in Tanzania?

In general, anyone embarking on this adventure has big expectations about the big five. My advice is not to have any expectations and to be surprised. Surely the wildness of these parks will amaze you in several episodes.

As for the five most sought-after animals, the chances are pretty high to meet them all, but nothing is guaranteed. We had the opportunity to see them, noting that we could only see the rhino through binoculars, about a kilometer away.

Even so, I think the experience was a success. I saw thousands of zebras, several species of antelopes, hundreds of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, flamingos and other splendid birds, cheetahs, leopards, lions, baboons, hippos, mongooses, and many more.

What are the must-see safari places in Tanzania?

I think I have already mentioned places that you should not miss, but of course, you can always add more destinations in this incredible country, with so much to offer.

For example, I would have liked to see some waterfalls because I know some really wow, but time did not allow us. On a future visit, I would probably include the waterfalls, along with Mount Kilimanjaro or even Meru.

Also, I encourage you to visit at least one Masaai tribe. The things you will learn from them are fascinating. The experience is an extra cost, but it is worth all the money.

It usually costs about $ 50. If you can, give the children some presents, either school props or juices and sweets. Their reaction will fill your soul with joy!

Types of accommodation on a safari in Tanzania

Even if you are in the middle of animals and you probably imagine that such an experience has nothing to do with luxury and comfort, find out that you’re mistaken. There are many types of safari accommodations, and among them are some super luxurious.

To summarize, the types of safari accommodations in Tanzania are of three kinds:

• Tent (camping) – is the most basic, comfort is minimal, and I suppose everyone knows what a simple tent looks like. A big plus here is the adrenaline
• Tented lodge – is a more advanced tent, with electricity, water, even a large bathroom. At such an accommodation I stayed in 3 of the four nights. The tented lodge can be economy or luxury, depending on how it looks and other facilities it offers
• Lodge – a lodge built of stone, wood, and other materials used in a house or hotel. Lodges are luxury or luxury plus. I stayed at a lodge near Ngorongoro Crater, called Farm House. I must mention that it was my favorite accommodation of the three

What food is served in safari?

All tours offered by companies that organize safaris in Tanzania offer three meals a day, and some also provide snacks between meals, including water, coffee, tea, and beverages. The cars are equipped with refrigerators so that the drinks stay cold.

The three main meals are generally prepared by the accommodations where you will stay.

Breakfast and dinner are served at the accommodation and lunch somewhere along the route, generally in specially designed spaces. There are places in the safari where several cars gather at about the same time.

If I may say so, the most “crowded” place was in the viewpoint near the Tarangire River, where there are several groups of baboons that will continue to struggle to steal food.

As much as you love animals and want to feed them from your lunch, you won’t be allowed to do that because they need to keep their wild nature.

Can you do the safari on your own?

Yes, you can go on safari on your own, but I would not recommend that. Even if you have experience because you’ve been before, I find it much more comfortable, safe, and advantageous to go on safari with a specialized company.

The guides are prepared for this and have years of experience behind them. They know better than anyone when and where to find animals and they communicate with each other through the station.

Sometimes, several cars meet around some lions, and this is not a coincidence. They frequently talk through the station and announce when they notice something worth seeing.

Even from financial criteria, I don’t think it’s an excellent choice to go on safari on your own. If you take a look at Booking and see what are the prices for one-night accommodation at the park lodges, you will see that the packages made by these companies still have significant financial advantages.

Do you need health insurance for a safari in Tanzania?

If before it was somehow optional and only the most cautious of us used it, I think the time has come for medical insurance to become indispensable when it comes to travel. It could save us from many situations where we would have to pay money out of our own pockets if we didn’t have it.

Tanzania requires a test performed a maximum of 72 hours before entering the country. These are the rules at the time of writing, which may change in the meantime. Therefore, if the test is positive, the vacation is lost. Insurance would help you recover the money spent. This is just one example.

It is not mandatory, and the authorities will not ask you. But for our peace of mind, it’s good to have it.

When do you have to make the payment?

In my experience, you will have to pay a part of them a few days in advance. This part may vary from company to company. We were asked for 30%, and we would pay the total amount when we would meet them. You can pay both in cash and by card, both in Tanzanian shillings and dollars.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is the largest nature reserve in Tanzania. In 2008, it merged with the neighboring Usangu Game Reserve, now covering more than 20,000km². There are campsites located all over the park, which make for perfect vantage points from which to see the wildlife up close.

Going on a safari here is like no other. There are endless ways to explore the park, all with a warm and helpful guide to help along the way. Most of these safaris are done from the safety of a car, whereas others are conducted on boats. The animals that you will see and the people that you will meet are going to create memories that last a lifetime.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Another one of Tanzania's stellar national parks, the Mahale Mountains, is located along the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Tanzania. Initially created to protect a large segment of Tanzania's chimpanzee population, the park has become a world-class tourist destination.

Nyerere National Park

Thanks to this forum we have now close to finalizing our December Christmas trip!

To our fellow travelers, which would you pick for permanent camp locations: Seronera or Ndutu?

I would opt for a camp in the Naabi Hill area. I would stay at the Woodlands Camp around Christmas it should (ha ha ) be teeming with wildebeest as they move to Ndutu. It is also a great area for cats.

Thank you Ralphhh! It would be the third week of December. Would the main plus of Seronera be more developed accomodations but nothing more then? Now I am leaning towards changing 2 nights to Ndutu/Naabi Hill

I would recommend Ndutu in December

Hi Alice, I wouldn’t say that accommodations would be a reason to choose Seronera. Rather, it would be because the Seronera Valley and surrounding plains and rivercourses are always productive in terms of wildlife. But to see the migratory herds and attendant predators, which are something very special, Naabi or Ndutu would be the places to go.

Seronera, located in the central Serengeti, is known for its abundance of wildlife year-round. During December, the area typically experiences the short rains, which can lead to lush green landscapes and attract large herds of grazers, as well as predators. The Seronera area is particularly famous for its big cat sightings, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Ndutu, on the other hand, is situated in the southern Serengeti ecosystem, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In December, Ndutu becomes the stage for the wildebeest migration's calving season, as thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth to their young. This area offers excellent opportunities to witness the spectacle of newborn calves taking their first steps and the ensuing predator-prey interactions.

Both locations offer incredible wildlife experiences, so the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities. If you're more interested in the spectacle of the wildebeest calving season, Ndutu might be the ideal choice. However, if you're keen on diverse wildlife sightings, including big cats, Seronera could be the better option.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

You will be met upon your arrival in JRO; and transfer to Hotel near JRO airport at Airport Planet Lodge for overnight.

If arriving late at night, we would recommend you stay near JRO airport as the drive to Arusha is not as safe on that highway that is poorly marked with  minimal lights, plus poor road signs on that highway; and we can get you at Airport Planet Lodge (Standard room) for $20/person more ]

Today, after breakfast, we drive to Tarangire National Park with picnic lunch; the park is renowned for its large elephant population. Game drives in the park.

After breakfast, we drive to Lake Manyara N/Park for game drives safari there. Later in the day we will drive to a small town of Karatu for a night.

Drive towards Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s gate (approx 10mins); after registration at the gate, proceed for about 30minutes drive before entering the descending gate of the Crater. This extinct volcano embraces 100sq miles alive with lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and many more games. Later in the day (around 2pm) we drive to overnight in Serengeti.
