Latest offers for High Jet

High Jet

High Jet is one of the leading passenger transportation companies in Egypt, specialising in ferry connections between the famous beach resort towns of Sharm el-Sheik and Hurghada.

Maritime transportation plays a vital role in the Egyptian economy, and when High Jet was formed, the company launched to the forefront of the industry, thanks to their modern ferry and a consistently high-quality, punctual service.

High Jet owes its success to their vessel, ‘La Pespes’, a large catamaran which can bridge the fifty nautical-mile journey in just over two hours, a route which normally takes about ten hours by road. La Pespes also complies with the International Maritime Organisation safety standards and is fully certified by the Egyptian Maritime Authorities. As for amenities, everything from comfortable seats, air-conditioning, a fully stocked café and television screens can be found on board, too.

So, it’s easy to see why High Jet is the first choice those looking to travel between Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheik, two of the most popular tourist spots in Egypt, known for their beautiful coral reefs and luxury hotels.

See 7 supersonic passenger-jet concepts that will connect cities in as little as one hour and fly up to 9 times faster than the speed of sound

  • The Concorde was a supersonic commercial airliner, flying passengers at 1,350 miles per hour.
  • High costs, safety concerns, and loud sonic booms forced the plane to retire in 2003.
  • Several companies are trying to reintroduce supersonic air travel with new ultra-high-speed jet concepts.

The age of supersonic commercial air travel started in 1973 with the first transatlantic crossing of the famous Concorde aircraft.

high jet travel

The Concorde made its first supersonic passenger flight 40 years ago — this is what it was like

Jointly developed by Aérospatiale — a predecessor of Airbus Industries — and the British Aircraft Corporation, the high-speed jet could fly up to 1,350 miles per hour, or twice the speed of sound.

high jet travel

The first passenger flight occurred on January 21, 1976, when British Airways flew the Concorde from London to Bahrain in just four hours — two and half hours faster than subsonic jets.

high jet travel

Air France started Concorde operations the same day, flying from Paris to Rio de Janeiro via Dakar, Senegal.

The Concorde's early success pushed British Airways and Air France, the only two operators of the jet — with seven each — to add more routes, like Paris to New York and London to Washington, DC.

However, over time, the jet proved to be too expensive and too noisy to maintain. A deadly crash in 2000 further accelerated its retirement, which came in 2003 after 27 years of commercial service.

Why we still don't have another Concorde

Since the Concorde's demise, the industry has not seen another supersonic jet because manufacturers are still trying to solve the challenges the iconic plane faced, like efficiency, cost, and noise.

high jet travel

However, companies worldwide have jets in development, and the Federal Aviation Administration has expressed its support for the reintroduction of supersonic travel in the US "as long as safety parameters are followed."

Texas-based startup Venus Aerospace is the most recent manufacturer to unveil a new supersonic jet — except the company hopes to go hypersonic, at Mach 9, meaning the plane will fly nine times faster than the speed of sound.

high jet travel

According to Venus Aerospace, its Stargazer jet will connect any two cities on Earth in an hour or less by flying along the edge of space.

high jet travel

The jet, dubbed a "spaceplane," will have a capacity of just 12 passengers and be powered by zero-emission rocket engines.

high jet travel

Other companies are also hoping to enter the hypersonic market. China's Space Transportation, also known as Beijing Lingkong Tianxing, is developing a 12-passenger jet that can fly 4,350 miles per hour, connecting New York and Beijing in one hour.

The ultra-high-speed jet concept, which is planned to begin flight testing in 2023, is not the company's first product. Lingkong Tianxing has also been developing reusable rockets, which are the foundation of its future commercial spaceplane.

NASA and Lockheed Martin have partnered to develop the X-59 supersonic aircraft, which is part of the Quesst mission. While not a passenger concept, the supersonic jet will help minimize sonic booms over land.

high jet travel

This will allow commercial supersonic planes to travel faster than the speed of sound over populated areas, which the Concorde was not permitted to do.

high jet travel

Lockheed Martin is planning to build on top of its testbed by creating a 40-seater ultra-fast commercial aircraft, which it calls Quiet Supersonic Technology Airliner (QSTA). The plane is planned to fly at Mach 1.8, or about 1,380 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the country's national space agency, is developing an unnamed supersonic jet that will carry 50 passengers and have a sonic boom 50% smaller than the Concorde's.

high jet travel

The agency is developing the aircraft in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Subaru. JAXA is also partnered with NASA on the X-59 QueSST project that will help the agency reduce its own jet's sonic boom.

US-based Exosonic is also developing a quiet, low-boom supersonic passenger plane. The 70-seater jet is planned to fly at Mach 1.8, with tickets costing the same as a regular business-class fare.

In 2020, Exosonic was awarded a grant from the US Air Force to build a supersonic plane that could serve as the future Air Force One.

The Air Force's Life Cycle Management Center said the deal will push the development of a "low-boom supersonic executive transport aircraft that will allow key decision makers and teams to travel around the world in half the time it takes now."

South African billionaire Priven Reddy's company, EON Aerospace, is also trying to get into the supersonic market with EON nxt-01, an environmentally friendly ultra-fast jet.

The plane would fly at Mach 1.9 and have up to 88 seats, with the goal to run on sustainable aviation fuel and operate with net-zero carbon emissions. EON hopes to get the jet into service by 2029.

Colorado-based Boom Supersonic, which is developing a Concorde-like plane known as Overture, is the only startup that reports having orders on the books.

high jet travel

Boom Supersonic's ultra-fast planes that United Airlines is set to begin flying in 2029 will be built and tested in North Carolina

United Airlines has purchased 15 of the high-speed Overture aircraft in a deal worth $3 billion. The jet is scheduled to enter commercial service with the airline in 2029.

high jet travel

The $200 million jet will fly at Mach 1.7, or about 1,300 miles per hour, and connect cities like Newark, New Jersey, and Frankfurt, Germany, in four hours. United estimates it will carry 65-88 passengers in an all-business cabin.

high jet travel

Japan Airlines also invested $10 million in Boom as part of a preorder for 20 Overture jets in 2017. The company plans to carry 45-55 business-class passengers and originally expected a mid-2020s entry to service, but there has been no update since.

If United's plan stays on track, the airline will become the first commercial carrier to fly a supersonic plane in regularly scheduled passenger service since the Concorde.

The 8 cheapest ways to get the private jet experience

Benji Stawski

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Once upon a time, extremely wealthy people bought their own planes. Later, other rich people realized they could buy shares in a jet instead of owning one since rare was the person who needed to use it on a daily basis. Today, alternatives to commercial air travel are entering the "Uber age," making airplane travel an on-demand perk as accessible as ordering up a car.

In the space pioneered by venerable players such as NetJets and XO, nimble newcomers are redefining what we'll call "affordable private jet luxury." You no longer necessarily have to pay thousands of dollars per flight; all you need is an app, as little as a few hundred bucks and, often, a tolerance for tiny aircraft.

For the latest travel news, deals and points and miles tips, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The latest wave of growth is just the beginning. "The private jet industry is currently booming," says Andres Morales, executive vice president of global operations for the aviation consultation company Skyline Group MC. "With more companies and individuals buying private aircraft, more jets are flying under capacity, so they look for different ways to offset their cost of ownership. That has resulted in an increase in the accessibility to flying private through different digital platforms that connect the consumer to a private aircraft."

The newer players are capitalizing on three trends.

First, cautious travelers are seeking ways to avoid crowded airport terminals and packed aircraft cabins during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Second, airlines are pulling back from less-profitable routes to smaller airports, complicating commercial travel to second-tier destinations.

And third, elite flyers who typically travel business class are getting fed up with some hassles of flying commercial. Security lines have grown significantly, legroom is shrinking and personal device holders are replacing inflight entertainment screens on some airlines.

Related: How travelers are using private jets to avoid coronavirus exposure

Private jet operators are seeing a dramatic rise in demand as a result of the pandemic.

"Unsurprisingly, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the demand for private aviation — both from new members of XO and current members — during this sensitive time triggered by the coronavirus," Ron Silverman, chief commercial officer of California-based on-demand private jet charter company XO, told us. "We expect demand to continue to grow as the situation remains unsettled and we are committed to meeting these requests."

With that in mind, let's look at some of the emerging players in the "affordable private jet luxury" space. While some services on this list are not entirely private, they all offer the convenience of flying out of smaller airports and private terminals where you can usually arrive just minutes before your scheduled departure time and avoid long security lines.

JSX calls itself an "industry disruptor" aiming to "revolutionize the flying experience" with "celeb-worthy flying at an accessible price." Behind the hype is a straightforward proposition: You're buying a seat on a "private" jet rather than chartering the whole plane.

JSX's fleet of Embraer E135 and E145 regional jets operates scheduled service seven days a week between cities throughout the West Coast and Texas, including Burbank, California (BUR); Las Vegas (LAS); Oakland, California (OAK); Santa Ana, California (SNA); Phoenix (PHX); Reno-Tahoe (RNO); Dallas (DAL); Houston (HOU); and more.

JSX also operates various seasonal and pop-up flights, such as to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (SJD). The planes have 30 seats onboard, so they're not truly private, but they're much more spacious than most regional jets and have some other advantages over traditional commercial flights.

Related: Touring JSX's ultra-spacious 1-1-configured jet

A huge part of JSX's selling proposition is being able to arrive just 20 minutes before your flight. The jets operate from private hangars and terminals so there are no long check-in lines, traditional Transportation Security Administration screenings or baggage checks. The Points Guy has experienced JSX multiple times, noting that the experience was remarkably hassle-free .

Flights clock in as low as $129 each way and you can even earn JetBlue TrueBlue points for your flights . Among the believers is JetBlue founder David Neeleman , who invested; JetBlue and Qatar Airways also took a stake.

Although perhaps best known for its continuous helicopter service to airports in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, Blade offers on-demand charters for helicopters, turboprops and any class of private jet to practically anywhere in the world. As you'd expect, chartering an entire plane isn't cheap, but much like JSX, Blade also lets you book by the seat on regularly scheduled flights to popular vacation spots such as Aspen, Colorado; Miami; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Blade also offers a feature called "FlightTilt" that allows you to propose a shared charter on your schedule. The flight is confirmed once four other seats are sold. Alternatively, if you're looking to fly between New York and Florida and want to guarantee your shared charter at the time of booking, you can reserve a minimum of two seats for $3,750 each and allow Blade to sell the remaining seats on your flight.

Blade's scheduled New York-to-Miami service, dubbed BladeOne , is operated using uniquely configured Bombardier CRJ200s that fly between Westchester, New York (HPN), and Miami's Opa Locka Airport (OPF). This type of aircraft is typically used as a regional commercial passenger jet and can hold up to 50 people, but Blade's have been converted into luxury jets for 16.

Onboard, passengers enjoy an array of amenities, such as gourmet food provided by BLT restaurants, iPads preloaded with entertainment, cashmere blankets and specially designed amenity kits with personal care products from boutique brands.

One-way tickets start at $2,850 each (or $3,345, including 15-minute helicopter transfers) between Manhattan and Westchester. What ups the value is that if you purchase a set of two round-trip tickets on BladeOne, you'll also get a room for the weekend at the opulent Faena Hotel Miami Beach . I recently got to experience this service and it was truly A-list from beginning to end.

BladeOne flights to Aspen are operated by a Gulfstream G400 Large Jet and start at $3,500 per seat. Regardless of whether it's a BladeOne or FlightTilt flight, Blade is now requiring all passengers to be fully vaccinated .

If you're new to Blade, you can receive $50 off your first flight when you sign up with the code BRIANF&F. Those under 28 can get discounts on flights between Manhattan and the Hamptons in New York; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and Miami with a Blade-GX membership.

Much like BladeOne, Aero sells seats on shared private jet flights. It offers routes to popular vacation destinations, such as Los Angeles to Aspen; Napa Valley, California; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and Sun Valley, Idaho. On Oct. 14, it will also be launching flights between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Flights depart and arrive in private terminals. They're operated by Embraer ERJ135LR jets, with 16 first-class seats arranged in a 1-1 configuration. Expect generous legroom, ample headroom and complimentary snacks and drinks. Even better, you can change or cancel your trip up to 48 hours before departure.

What if you could fly as often as you want, whenever you want, for a monthly membership fee? That's the concept behind Los Angeles-based Surf Air, which pioneered "all you can fly" in 2013. You can arrive up to 15 minutes before your flight on one of Surf Air's Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turboprops; New York fashion house Bespoken designed the clubby interiors.

Since its U.S. debut, more than 215,000 guests have flown Surf Air between about a dozen West Coast destinations, including Los Angeles, Oakland and Santa Barbara, California. Moving forward, the company plans to improve its operation by honing in on a few key routes, such as the Bay Area to Los Angeles and Dallas to Houston.

The company offers four membership options, ranging from $199 per month to $2,999 per month:

  • Access ($199 per month): Gain access to all flights on a per-seat basis.
  • Advanced ($999 per month): Unlimited off-peak flights for free and access to buy everything else.
  • Freedom ($2,499 per month): Access the majority of flight inventory, including peak flights, for free.
  • Unlimited ($2,999 per month): Fly where and when you want across the entire network with no limits.

The per-seat price for scheduled flights usually starts at $99 for off-peak, $199 for peak and $349 for premium. You can unlock preferred pricing and flight credits with a FoundersCard membership.

Surf Air recently added nationwide on-demand charters to its offerings, with charters starting at $400 per hour. You can choose from thousands of aircraft and book directly online without needing to speak with a broker. Like Blade, Surf Air does not own or operate any aircraft but rather acts as an agent for its members.

If you frequently travel between California, Arizona and Nevada, you might want to consider a Set Jet membership. For $99.95 per month (plus a one-time $99.95 security-check fee) you can book seats on private jet flights along the West Coast for just $450 to $490 each way — basically the cost of a commercial first-class ticket.

high jet travel

Set Jet currently offers flights between Scottsdale, Arizona; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Orange County, California; San Diego; and San Francisco, as well seasonal flights to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Aspen ($1,000 to $1,700 each way).

Rather than have a fixed schedule, flight times are determined by the first person to request the flight. Flights are operated exclusively by Bombardier Challenger 850 aircraft with 13-16 seats. Onboard, you can expect complimentary top-shelf alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, premium snacks and free in-flight Wi-Fi. Set Jet also doesn't charge extra for bags or if you elect to bring a pet along.

In the next 12 months, Set Jet plans to acquire two Embraer Lineage 1000s and launch a $1,000-per-month "elite membership." With this membership, you'll be able to book cross-country flights between Los Angeles and New York for just $3,799 each way.

Wheels Up is one of the biggest players in the industry and has been growing rapidly through the acquisition of companies including Delta Private Jets, Gama Aviation Signature and Mountain Aviation.

It launched in 2013 with a membership-only model focused on an exclusive fleet of Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft but has since transitioned to a diversified services provider with one of the industry's largest fleets of owned, managed and third-party partner aircraft. Members can choose from more than 1,500 planes, including the King Air 350i, Cessna Citation Excel/XLS, Cessna Citation X and many others in the light jet, midsize jet, super-midsize jet and large-cabin jet categories.

It offers three membership tiers — Connect, Core and Business. Initiation fees range from $2,995 in year one for a Connect membership to upward of $29,500 in year one for the Business membership. Annual dues drop to $2,495 and $14,500, respectively, in year two. However, thanks to a new partnership with American Express, you can now get up to 40% off your membership and other perks if you have The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Connect members get access to some of the most popular Wheels Up features, including Hot Flights, which allows you to book discounted empty leg flights — when an aircraft is scheduled to fly without any passengers — for as low as $320 for an entire plane.

Like JSX and Blade, you can also "fly by the seat" on scheduled shuttle or charter flights to popular events. Core and Business members can take advantage of 24- and 48-hour aircraft-type guarantees, plus dynamic pricing with rates capped at $4,695 per hour for a King Air 350i. A midsized partner jet will set you back $7,695 per hour.

Members also have the opportunity to fast-track Delta Medallion status , earn Delta SkyMiles, get discounts on select Delta fares and more. Non-travel "Wheels Down" benefits include access to events such as private parties at Art Basel Miami , the Super Bowl and a hospitality house at the Masters Tournament.

In early 2021, Wheels Up quietly opened its mobile app to non-members. Now, anyone can book charter flights, but the rates will be higher. Non-members also don't have the same aircraft-availability guarantees as members or access to features such as shared flights or empty leg Hot Flights.

Related: Yes, you can fly private — here's the secret that will help you do it

While XO made a name for itself through its on-demand charter services, it also offers the ability to purchase individual seats on a growing number of regularly scheduled flights, as well as crowdsourced flights. XO-initiated "shuttle" flights, such as between New York and South Florida, start around $995 for members and $1,390 for non-members. These shuttle flights include a cabin attendant and complimentary food and drinks.

XO also frequently offers empty leg specials which can feature savings of about 50%-75%. While most empty leg specials are for the entire aircraft, XO sometimes even lets you book empty legs by the seat. Just be aware that XO is known for canceling empty legs quite frequently so it's a good idea to have a backup option if your flight is canceled.

XO flights are available to non-members for an additional $395 fee. However, considering entry-level Rise memberships cost just $595 per year, it would make more sense to get one of those if you plan on booking more than two seats per year.

Founder William Herp calls Linear Air an air taxi for regional trips of 700-800 miles, when you don't want to drive and there's no good airline option. On sites like Kayak, he said, "We come up as the only nonstop option between places like New York City and Ithaca or Harrisburg and Bar Harbor, Maine."

The company was founded in 2004 and has grown by more than 1,600% since then. It doesn't own a single plane; like ride-hailing apps, the company partners with operators across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. A straightforward interface lets you request departure and arrival airports by inputting a street address or ZIP code. Herp told TPG that the average transaction comes to about $2,000 for a passenger configuration of three to eight seats. "When you fill up the seats and maximize the opportunity, you're talking about $500-$800 per person," or less than many commercial flights.

Bottom line

There are a number of companies offering charter subscriptions and private jet-like experiences for less than you might think. Since there aren't any reasonable ways to book private jet flights with points and miles, be sure to use a credit card that maximizes the return on private jet travel because there are some serious points-earning opportunities here.

The Platinum Card from American Express is generally an excellent option for booking flights. It earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar for airfare booked directly with the airline or American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), offers numerous travel protections and now even comes with discounts on Wheels Up. However, private flights often don't code as airfare or even travel at all, so you'll probably be better off using a card with a high return on everyday spending , such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Why private jet usage is higher than ever before.

Private jet travel hit a record high in 2022, surpassing the previous year’s all-time high

In recent years, the use of private jets has seen a significant surge, with more individuals and businesses opting for this exclusive mode of air travel. From celebrities and high-net-worth individuals to corporate executives and leisure travelers, private jets have become a preferred choice for those seeking exclusivity, flexibility, and efficiency in their journeys.

The (private) Jet Age

The recent rise in private jet usage was first seen in the wake of COVID-19. At a time when social distancing was at its peak, this form of travel offered a controlled and sanitized environment, reducing the risk of exposure to viruses and other health hazards associated with commercial air travel.

With fewer touchpoints and interactions with other passengers, private jets provided a sense of security and peace of mind to travelers during those uncertain times. So much so that in 2021, usage rose to an all-time high of 3.3 million private jet take-offs – the most for a single year.

And despite most commercial airliners returning to service post-pandemic, the popularity of private aviation continued to soar in 2022, increasing to a record 5.5 million flights, as reported by business aviation data firm WingX.

Driving factors

One of the primary reasons driving the increased demand for private jets is, as expected, the release of pent-up lockdown-induced wanderlust. And as economies regain momentum, so do businesses and their owners, allowing for more capacity to travel via private jets.

Secondly, with the increased demand comes innovative business models that adapt to market needs, making private jet travel more accessible than ever before. Fractional ownership, jet card programs, and on-demand charter services have democratized private jet usage, attracting a broader range of customers. Plus, the rise of digital platforms has made booking private jet charters quick and convenient, contributing to the increased popularity of this mode of travel.

Discover more aviation news about the passenger experience here.

Additionally, with the latest technologies and luxuries provided by advanced business jets such as the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Dassault Falcon 8X, passengers are increasingly spoiled for choice.

Some might also argue that there is a heightened need for privacy and security. In a world where gaining viral infamy is merely a few clicks away, celebrities, high-profile executives, and government officials often value discretion and confidentiality during their travels – which private jets offer.

So, what’s next?

At the 2022 Farnborough International Airshow, Gulfstream senior vice president of worldwide sales Scott Neal said that in the 18 months leading up to the airshow, sales of Gulfstream jets hit a record run, with a significant growth in first-time buyers. Referring to the aircraft of choice favored by the rich and famous, Neal added:

“Believe it or not, for quite a few of our first-time buyers, their first airplane has been a G650.”

And with new-generation private jets that will soon be taking to the skies, like the Gulfstream G800 and Falcon 10X , we can continue to anticipate a rise in private jet usage across the world.

Ask the Captain: Reader questions about the SR-71

high jet travel

Question: How high can a plane fly?

– submitted by reader Manish, Jaipur, India

Answer:  It depends on the airplane. Some corporate airplanes can fly up to 51,000 feet. The Concorde flew up to 60,000 feet, and the all-time high flier was the SR-71 which could go over 80,000 feet. Some experimental airplanes flew higher, but they were rocket-powered and did not take off by themselves, so I am excluding them.

Q: How fast can planes go?

– David Swisher, Allegan, Michigan

A: It depends on the airplane. The SR-71 could fly three times the speed of sound (over 2,100 mph).

Q: Do you think any aircraft exceeds the SR-71 as a high performance "extreme" jet (not rocket) aircraft?

– Bill Boyle

A:  Not to my knowledge. The SR-71 was in a class by itself. No other airplane could go as high, as fast, for as long. The legendary reconnaissance jet required a large support staff and infrastructure, but nothing could do the same job. In the days before high-resolution satellite imagery, the SR-71 provided images of places no other airplane could have achieved.

Q: I was told that a jet plane could reach mach 7 or 8, true?

– Charles Conley, Columbus, Ohio

A:  No current jet has exceeded Mach 3.5, only the SR-71 and A-12 could reach that speed. Hypersonic flight above Mach 5 has been achieved with missiles but not jets.

Q: What ejection seat did the SR-71 have?

– Gary M. Eaton, Valrico, Florida

A: The SR-71 ejection seat was a Lockheed-built SR-1 ejection seat. It is similar to the ejection seat in the U-2. Both are derivatives of the Lockheed C-2, which was similar to the Stanley ejection seat used in several military aircraft.

Q: In reference to your recent column about high speed climbs, can a tower operator give permission to violate the FAA regulation for 250 knots below 10,000 feet?

– Larry, Arizona

A: Not usually. There could be a very rare or extreme case where a tower operator might issue a very special clearance after coordinating with departure control and enroute control. An example would be if an SR-71 was at an airshow and was departing for its base. That airplane has a special need to climb faster than 250 knots. It is possible that the approval for the high-speed climb would come from the tower controller, but that would be a very special set of circumstances.

The Best Places to Travel in Spring

best places to travel in spring

Spring in the U.S. unfolds with unique experiences beyond the usual destinations. Imagine wandering through Skagit Valley, Washington, where tulip fields paint the landscape in vibrant hues. Sedona, Arizona, enchants with mystical red rocks and vortexes, inviting introspection and adventure. Venture further to the Florida Keys for serene beaches or Monterey, California, where the scenic coastline teems with enchanting marine life.

During the spring months, the world awakens and is ready to embrace you on your adventures. The weather is much better for getting in all your travel adventures — but there is just one slight problem. With so many destinations in full bloom, where do you go?

This article explores some of the best places to travel in spring.

Rather than heading off to your regular ol’ spring destination or choosing one of the most popular tourist hotspots, why not visit someplace that may be a little off the beaten path? You know, a place you may not have otherwise dreamed of.

Here are some of the best places to travel in spring.

Skagit Valley, WA: Tulip Color Explosion

The flowers of springtime are in full bloom in Skagit Valley, WA. And that is exactly what you will find at the largest tulip festival in the United States — the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Field after field of the bright bulbs may even be too much for the eyes to take in. It is a breathtaking and unforgettable experience you won’t want to miss.

You will find a long list of outdoor recreation available for you here, as well as many delicious foods and craft brews to savor. Come and see.

Sedona, AZ: Mystical Red Rocks

Don your hiking shoes, grab your water bottle, and run straight into the mystical red rocks of Sedona. The weather is perfect this time of year, giving you blooms and greenery with a red rock backdrop.

Spend time hiking or horseback riding during the day and stargazing long after the sun sets.

You will also want to experience the incredible art scene, the local boutiques, and a round of golf at one of the many country clubs.

The Florida Keys: Serene Beach Paradise

Springtime in the Florida Keys brings the perfect weather for a getaway — a mix of warm sunshine during the day and cool, breezy nights. With the islands in full bloom, it will truly feel like paradise.

You will have a long list of things to do while in the Keys, too, like spending time by the water, in the water, or on the water. Adventures like snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, playing beach volleyball, sunbathing, fishing, jet skiing, and more are waiting for you here.

Can you hear the waves calling you?

Spend your free time shopping at the local boutiques, dine on fresh seafood, and sip on cold, frosty beverages. Mingle with the locals and stay awhile.

Monterey, CA: Coastal Wildlife Wonders

Ask anyone who knows when the best time to visit Monterey, CA is and they will undoubtedly tell you “spring.” Fewer crowds and mild temperatures make it an ideal destination, but it is the wildflower blooms, the coastline, and the wildlife that will make you stay.

Enjoy horseback riding along the shore. Catch sight of a whale or dolphin on a tour. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. And, if you are adventurous, get a glimpse of the blue ocean and the fields of color below while hang-gliding.

Don’t miss the award-winning dining, shopping, and various events found at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf while here, too.

Santa Fe, NM: Cultural Riches Bloom

Santa Fe, NM is full of fun things to do this time of year before the summer rush of tourists sets in. The weather makes it perfect for getting outdoors and going for a hike with a picturesque backdrop everywhere you look.

Culture and creativity run deep here and you will find it at the many shops, galleries, botanical gardens, and museums.

Antelope Valley, CA: Poppy Fields Galore

The poppy reserve in Antelope Valley looks like fields of sunkissed ground — especially if viewed in the morning sunshine. Many people love to come here for a visit during the spring months to bathe themselves in the glow that spreads over 1,700 acres.

Be sure to hit up The BLVD for some shopping and dining, as well as entertainment and the arts. Or put on your hiking shoes and explore one of the local parks.

If relaxation is what you are looking for, here is where you will find it.

Portland, OR: Cherry Blossoms and Gardens

Portland, OR, is known for its cherry blossoms and peaceful gardens. The best time to experience them is during the springtime. You will want to visit Mt. Tabor Park, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, and Portland Saturday Market.

Be sure to time your trip just right to catch one of the many outdoor festivals this time of year, including the Rose Festival. Each is sure to bring you colorful memories to last a lifetime.

Joshua Tree National Park, CA: Desert Spring Magic

Joshua Tree National Park seems always crowded. The key to a great visit, however, is finding a time when the visitors are relatively low. Springtime is your best opportunity.

This is when the temperatures are mild, the sun is shining high in the sky, and the views all around you are colorfully filled with blooms. It is as if the desert has sprung awake and invited you in.

Are you ready to explore?

The Maxim Gorky: Aviation’s Titanic

high jet travel

Maurie White’s father, an engineer who produced truck radiators, was one of forty people invited onto the Maxim Gorky, a mammoth passenger plane that was comparable to a Boeing 747 and cruised at speeds up to 140 miles per hour. Designed to be a monument in the air, the Gorky was scheduled to take off from a Moscow airport with workers commended by the Soviet government.

15-year-old White, who accompanied his father and ten-year-old brother, never boarded the plane. A company car set out to the airport late and got lost on the way. When they arrived to the runway, its gate was locked and the plane had already taken to the skies. White, who was looking forward to his first airplane trip, looked at the empty grounds with disappointment. He had no sense of his good fortune until learning that the Maxim Gorky had crashed and become aerospace’s version of the Titanic.

The Maxim Gorky and Stalin’s Plan for Aerospace

Named after the dramatist whose play The Lower Depths is still widely staged and anthologized, the Maxim Gorky’s model number was Tupolev ANT-20. The craft was designed by Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev, an engineer who held important aeronautic positions in the Soviet Union until the era of Brezhnev.

Originally planned as a heavy bomber, the Gorky was part of Josef Stalin’s vision to transform the USSR into a world aviation power. The Gorky was built in the heyday of Stalin’s Five-Year Plans that were aimed to industrialize the USSR at breakneck speed, including its military transport. With war looming in Western Europe during the early 1930’s, Stalin placed emphasis on building grand-scale airplanes that could defend Soviet territory in battle or, at least, capture international attention.

Tupolev’s ANT-20, built by a factory of 800 craftsmen from July 1933 to April 1934, had plenty of features to exhibit the USSR’s industrial capabilities. Weighing over 30,000 short tons when empty, the ANT-20 had a wingspan of 207 feet (compared to 196 feet across the Boeing 747-100) and a length of 108 feet. The craft, with a range of 750 miles, was powered by eight engines of 900 horsepower each and achieved cruising speeds of 130 to 140 miles per hour.

Most impressive was the plane’s functionality. On board with a crew of 23 – including eight for navigation – were the Gorky’s printing shop, photo lab, cinema, library, cafeteria, and radio station. The ANT-20 was the first airplane to include its own ladder and the first to use alternating current in addition to direct current. The plane could even be disassembled for transport by rail.

The Last Flight

Funded by public contributions, the Maxim Gorky made its intended statement in the eyes of reporters, photographers, governments, and the general public. The Gorky enjoyed its maiden flight on June 19, 1934, when it powered over Red Square and became the largest operating aircraft in world history. The Gorky became a roaring symbol of Soviet industrialization, known to Western journalists as ‘the propaganda plane’ and ‘Maximum Gawky.’

The events of May 18, 1935 were in a similar, ritualistic vein. In an act of workers’ solidarity, technicians, manufacturers, farmers, miners, artists, and students boarded for a flight over the Moscow aerodrome, where citizens and high-ranking politicians were attending an open air ceremony. The plane after ignition, which has been captured on film, was known to be an awesome sight. When arranging a flight that was meant to inspire the Soviet people, there was no place to imagine the Maxim Gorky crashing.

The Gorky left its Moscow runway on May 18th with two older biplanes. The biplanes took position alongside the Gorky’s wings; one was intended to take photographs, while the other provided symmetry and helped to underscore the Gorky’s major difference in size.

Soviet authorities are thought to have devised stunts for the flight, one of which led to catastrophe. According to eyewitness accounts, pilot Nikolai Blagin attempted to loop his Polikarpov I-5 biplane around the Gorky and instead smashed into its port wing. The two planes fell out of the sky and crashed in the residential area of Sokol, a Moscow suburb. Blagin and 47 others were killed.

Larger airplane crashes have occurred since the Maxim Gorky’s time, but the Gorky crash took place under a self-promoted grandiosity. In this sense, the Gorky draws eerie parallels with the RMS Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1912. The crash was judged by Soviet officials as a blow to its propaganda cache, although later memorial services helped, in rather opportunistic ways, to build national unity.

Nikolai Blagin, who may or may not have pulled the fatal stunt on his own, was vilified in the Soviet press after his death. Newspapers in Warsaw printed an anti-Soviet suicide letter that was allegedly written by Blagin but is now considered a forgery. Soviet leaders even coined the term ‘Blaginism,’ meaning to act with callous disregard for authority. Yet Blagin was granted his place in the Maxim Gorky Memorial at Novodevichy Cemetery, where each of the victims is interred.

A second Tupolev ANT-20 was built through Stalin’s orders and took flight in 1938. The second plane, model number ANT-20bis, served on routes in Russia and Uzbekistan but also crashed and killed 36 people on board after its autopilot was mistakenly shut off. It is believed that one of its pilots allowed a passenger to sit in his chair shortly before the craft went down.

The Maxim Gorky has captured the imagination of onlookers before and after its tragic result. A 1934 painting by Vasilly Kuptsov, for instance, now hangs in the Russian Museum at St. Petersburg. In 1936, composer Nicolai Myaskovsky finished his Sixteenth Symphony, whose third movement conveys the national mourning. Amongst flight enthusiasts, the Gorky remains an intense conversation piece.

Technology always brings its dangers, as Maurie White and others who bore witness to the Maxim Gorky have confirmed. Flight has reached incredible heights with its advent of jet engines, mach speeds, and, ultimately, travel in space. As humans, we are brave yet strangely fragile when defying our environment. For every accomplishment, incredible risks must be overcome.

Astronomers Say Neutron Jet Emissions Travel at Relativistic Speeds

Posted: April 25, 2024 | Last updated: April 25, 2024

New research suggests neutron stars propel jets of gas and dust at speeds of hundreds of millions of miles per hour. Thermonuclear explosions on distant stars kickstart these high-speed emissions, generating bright X-rays that made it possible to measure their staggering speeds.

Bucket list travel on a budget: Expert tips for airfare, loyalty programs, credit card perks and more

VIDEO: Tips for affordable travel

Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.

Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.

Where to find the best flight deals

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

Save money on international phone plans for summer trips

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.
