Are RV Outlets the Same as House Outlets?

Are RV Outlets the Same as House Outlets?

All of our reviews are based on exhaustive research, industry experience and whenever possible, hands-on testing. When you make a purchase using one of our chosen links we’ll get a small percentage of the proceeds. This supports the site and keeps Jeffsetter running. You can read more here .

Your RV probably feels like your home away from home, and if you are a full-time RVer , then it is your home. It is however important to understand where and how your RV is similar to and different from a typical residence. That way you can ensure you are maintaining it properly.

You’ve probably looked at your RV outlets and thought that they look just like the ones in your house, but are RV outlets the same as house outlets?

House and RV outlets function similarly and they run on 120-V AC power, but because RVs usually run on a 12-volt DC power battery a generator, inverter, or shore power is necessary in order to run power to the RV outlets. Additionally, RV outlets are shallower, they can wear more quickly and are less secure.

We’ll explore how RV outlets differ from residential ones, GFCI compliance and troubleshooting as well as how to replace your RV outlets with residential ones.

RV outlets compared to house outlets are not so different, but they’re also not the same so let’s take a look at what might be setting the two apart!

Differences & Similarities to House Outlets

RV and house outlets are very similar in functionality, but they do have some essential differences that you should know about to make sure your RV outlets are functioning properly and running the correct amount of power.

The physical design of the outlets themselves differs from one another. An outlet for your home is designed to be screwed into a stud and wired throughout the walls, an RV outlet has to be designed differently because there are no studs in the walls of an RV. Usually, an RV outlet is attached with a plastic clamp to keep it secure inside of the wall.

In addition, RV outlets are shallower and may have different ways to connect the wires than a house outlet will. While a house outlet will have screws to hold everything in place, RV outlets will have spring clips or a slide-in wire holder to keep everything in place and make the proper connections. Because of this, RV outlets can wear more quickly and are less secure than residential outlets.

Both residential and RV outlets operate on a 120-volt AC ( alternating current ) system. The difference is that an RV itself runs on batteries that are a 12-volt DC ( direct current ) system so a generator, inverter, or shore power is going to be necessary in order to run power to the outlets.

You can expect to run the same kind of devices and appliances on RV outlets as you do inside your home.

How Do RV Outlets Get Power?

Because your RV battery puts out 12-volt DC power, if you want to run your RV outlets off of just the battery, you will need an inverter for that to work . An inverter will convert the power so that it can run the outlets.

Without an inverter, the battery can power your overhead lights and your USB charging points, but not the outlet itself.

Depending on the RV the 12-volt DC power system is powered by two or more batteries. One battery or set of batteries will start the engine of your RV and power the dashboard. The second set of batteries will power the water pump and the refrigerator. All of your other appliances and devices will likely be powered by 110-volt or 120-volt AC power, which is why you need the inverter.

Additionally, you can run your outlets off of shore power when you are connected at a campsite or off of a generator . We talk more about inverters here so feel free to check it out!

Can You Use GFCI Outlets in Your RV?

GFCI outlets are typically safer than a standard outlet and can protect you from being electrocuted by shutting power off when necessary. GCFI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter , you can and should use them in your RV whenever possible.

The way these outlets work is that they have a breaker inside that when tripped will automatically cut off power to the outlet. Typically, the breaker is tripped when the outlet or plug that’s plugged into the outlet comes in contact with water or any kind of moisture. These outlets are usually a requirement to have in your bathroom or kitchen because these areas are usually high in moisture .

There are GFCI outlets that are made specifically for your RV because the ones you might find in the home are typically going to be larger. Space is always a premium inside of an RV, even when it comes to outlets. That being said, you can use residential outlets inside of your RV and there are benefits to this as they tend to be safer and can last longer.

You are not necessarily required to use GFCI outlets in your RV but you should look into the requirements of your state just in case you are. The National Electrical Code details what is deemed necessary for safety in your RV. Make sure you are meeting those standards when you do any electrical work inside of your RV.

GFCI outlets will typically have a ‘reset’ button in the center that can be pressed when the circuit is tripped to turn the outlet back on.

In your RV, multiple outlets may be connected to the one with the ‘reset’ button and because of this, may not have a button themselves. They will usually have a sticker indicating that they are GFCI outlets. The button on the main outlet will control all of these outlets.

GFCI Outlets Keep Tripping

This is a common issue you may run into in your RV, GFCI outlets can be sensitive and might trip often. Most often, they trip because of contact with water. That being said, in an RV one GFCI outlet might be connected to multiple outlets, so if one trips they might all shut off.

Unplug everything from the GFCI outlet with the reset button and all nearby outlets if they are also not working . After this, look and see if you can find any signs of moisture on or in the outlet. Wipe them dry with a cloth on the outside and allow the interior time to dry.

If you don’t see any signs of water then you may have had something plugged in that tripped the power. If this is the case, then press the reset button while nothing is plugged in. If the button stays in, plug in the devices one by one until it trips again. Whatever device tripped the breaker may need to be replaced or could have moisture on the plug.

There’s also a possibility that the wiring itself is the problem or the outlet is bad. If that’s the case, then it can be replaced or rewired. A qualified technician is probably best for the job, but later in this article, I’ll go over the steps of how to replace an outlet in your RV. Just make sure to take safety precautions and if you aren’t sure you can do it, bring in a professional.

Can You Add More Outlets to Your RV?

You can add outlets to your RV if you find that it doesn’t have enough to power all of your devices and appliances, which can easily happen if you’re traveling with your whole family !

With anything involving electricity, you want to be confident in your ability to add an outlet safely. The risk of electric shock and fire is definitely real and something you should consider before starting a project like this. A really easy solution to a problem with lack of outlets is buying a couple of power strips and using those instead.

If you want to do it yourself, the video below shows you a step-by-step way to add a new outlet to your RV.

How To Replace Outlets in Your RV?

You may end up needing to replace an outlet over time if one stops working, or you might want to update an outlet so you have added USB ports or just a safer outlet to use. Follow the steps below to safely replace an RV outlet with a residential one.

You can modify these steps if you are simply replacing an RV outlet with another RV outlet. The added steps help with adapting a standard outlet to your RV. You might want to replace the RV outlet with a standard one because they can be more reliable and longer lasting as well as less expensive.

As stated before, make sure you are confident before starting this project that you can do it safely because it can be very dangerous to work with electricity.

Tools & Materials

  • RV Outlet
  • Faceplate
  • Electrical box for the outlet
  • Offset screwdriver (Philip’s head)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Voltage tester
  • Wire strippers
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Utility knife

Removing the Outlet

  • The first step is to always make sure that you have turned off the power completely. You’ll want to use your voltage tester to make sure that there is no power going to the outlet before starting any of your work.
  • Remove the face plate of your outlet with a screwdriver
  • Remove the outlet from the wall — please note that it will still be attached to the wall via wires.
  • Release the box with a screwdriver or tool on the side ports by pushing in on the tabs
  • Pull the back cover off
  • If you have trouble with this, then snip the wires with wire cutters
  • Place the old outlet aside

Installing the New Outlet

  • Fold the wires back into the wall to keep them safely out of the way
  • You will likely need to accommodate a larger box by cutting into the wall, this can be done with a utility knife or whatever tool you prefer to use.
  • Once you’ve sized the hole correctly and the box fits snuggly, pull the wires back out of the wall and feed it through the box
  • Secure the new box to the wall using screws
  • Remove the wires from their casing using your utility knife
  • Strip the wires using your wire stripper
  • If there are no labels that tell you what wire goes where, black wires go to brass screws, white to silver, and green or copper will go to the green screw
  • If there is a grounding wire, it will also attach to the green screw
  • Use your needle-nose pliers to curve the end of each wire and place them under their respective screw
  • Tighten the screw so that it secures the wire in place

Finishing Touches

  • Use electrical tape to cover the screws
  • Put your outlet into the box and secure it
  • Place the faceplate back onto the outlet and secure it
  • Turn the power back on and test the outlet

This is a basic guide on how to replace an outlet in your RV with a residential outlet. I recommend using it in conjunction with a video like the one linked previously in this article for it to be most effective.

Call in a professional electrician if you aren’t sure you can do this by yourself . For them, adding a new or replacing an old outlet will likely be a quick and easy job to complete.

Conclusion

RV outlets are very similar to residential outlets but do have some differences in their size and how they function off of an inverter , shore power, or a generator. You can replace your RV outlets with residential ones if you would like added features and safety, but before making that replacement ensure there is no power running to the outlet you are working on.

RV outlets might need to be GFCI compliant and you should check the regulations of your state before making any changes to your outlets. If you run into some trouble with your GFCI outlets, it can be easy to troubleshoot what the problem is.

And, when in doubt, call an electrician!

Can I Plug My RV Into My House

Can You Hookup Your RV Into House Electrical System?

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: March 3, 2024
  • 11 minutes read

Whether you’re a full-time RVer or a weekend road warrior, you’ve no doubt asked yourself if you can plug your RV into a house outlet.

After all, you’ve probably witnessed friends who are moochdocking – the art of plugging a travel trailer into a friend’s house to mooch off their electricity.

Or maybe you’ve seen someone with a big garage or shed for their RV who seems to have their camper powered up all the time.

Which begs the question – can you plug your RV into your house electrical outlet?

The short answer is yes, you can plug your RV into a household electric system. But there are limitations including the sorts of RV appliances you can run and the amount of time you can run an RV on household electric. For example, RVs wired for 30 amp electricity are easier to plug into your house than RVs with a 50 amp hookup. And you need to be careful to understand how much your home circuit breaker can withstand.

And you also need to decide if you’ll use an adapter to plug your camper into your house or if you’ll hire an electrician to wire up a special plug for your RV.

So let’s break it all down for you here – what sorts of campers you can plug into your house, how you should plug them in, and the limitations that come with plugging your RV in at home.

Is it Possible to Plug an RV Into a House Electric System

Is it Possible to Plug an RV Into a House Electric System?

Yes, you can plug your camper into a household outlet.

But you’re probably asking yourself:

  • How can I plug a 30 amp RV into my house?
  • How can I plug a 50 amp RV into my house?
  • And, should I simply plug my RV into my house outlet or do I need a special plug?

The answers to the above questions depend on what type of camper you have, how you plan to use your camper at your house, and the specifics of your home’s electrical system.

What Types of Campers Can I Plug Into My House

What Types of Campers Can I Plug Into My House?

Any modern RV, travel trailer, camper, or pop up can be plugged into your house. This is true for both 30 amp and 50 amp RVs.

But plugging your RV into a house outlet does not mean that it will run like normal.

Unless you plan to make some modifications to your home electrical system, you’ll be limited on how you can use power in your RV.

This is especially true if you have a larger motorhome with a 50 amp hookup.

Understanding the Basics of RV Electric Will Help You Know Your Limitations When Plugging Your Camper in at Home

Before deciding how to plug your camper into a house outlet, it’s important to understand the basics of RV power systems:

1. RVs generally have one of two types of power – 30 amp or 50 amp.

30amp RV plugs have 3 prongs and are larger than your standard home plug.

50amp RV plugs have 4 prongs and are also larger than a standard home plug.

50amp plugs and power systems are generally found on larger RVs – especially          those with two or more air-conditioners on the roof.

2. Some smaller pop-up or teardrop campers will have a standard household 110volt plug coming out of them.

Because pop-up/teardrop campers have limited power needs, they can usually be plugged into household outlets without modification.

3. Campers also have an internal 12 volt power system that powers lights and other small electronics.

Your RVs 12 volt power system exists so you can use your camper’s onboard batteries to power small electronics (e.g. lights) when you are not plugged in.

When you plug your RV into your house, your 12 volt system will be powered because your RV has a converter that will take some of the 110 volt power from your house and convert it to 12 volt.

When you plug into a house outlet, your RV will also charge its internal batteries so you can use the 12 volt system when you unplug.

How Can I Run Electricity From My House To My RV?

When it comes to plugging your RV into your house, you have two main options:

Use an adapter to plug your RV cord into a standard household outlet.

Hire an electrician to wire a 30 or 50 amp plug into your home (this is the same outlet you use at most RV parks).

If you go with option 1, the adapter will cost between $10-$30. Be sure to buy an adapter that is specific for a 30 or 50 amp plug, depending on which you have.

Option 1 will also limit you on what appliances you can run in your RV. More on that in a moment.

If you go with option 2, you could spend anywhere from $200-$1,000+ having an electrician wire up the appropriate plug.

With option 2, you won’t need an adapter because your electrician will wire up the exact outlet your RV requires.

Option 2 will usually allow you to run your RV just as you normally would at an RV campground – using your air-conditioner and other appliances without issue as you stay in your camper.

How To Plug In An RV Into House Electric

Let’s assume you don’t want to shell out for an electrician and you go with option 1. Here are the steps you’ll want to follow to plug in an RV to your home’s electrical system:

  • Be sure that all power is off in your RV – If you accidentally left your RV’s air-conditioner, heater, or other energy hungry appliances on before plugging into your house, you’ll suck a big amount of power when you plug in. This usually results in a circuit breaker getting tripped and all power getting cut off to your RV. Avoid this problem by first shutting down all electrical appliances in your camper.
  • Pick the house outlet you want to use – This step can be a bit tricky, but it is vital that you pick an outlet with a high amp rating to best handle your camper being plugged into it. To figure this out, you’ll need to go to your house’s circuit breaker and find the switch for the outlet you want to plug your RV into. On the switch, you should see a number. That number is the maximum number of amps that that outlet can handle before the breaker trips and you lose power.  Be sure the number on that switch is 10amps or higher. Many household circuits are only 5amps which usually won’t provide enough power for your RV.
  • Get a heavy duty extension cord long enough to stretch from your RV to the household outlet – The safest and most reliable extension cords are the thick ones designed for RVs. By using an RV extension cord all the way up to your household outlet, you’ll be getting the maximum amount of power from your home outlet.
  • Plug your RV cord or extension cord into the adapter – Now that you’ve gotten your RV power cord extended to the outlet you want to use, you will need to use your adapter to actually plug in to your house outlet.30/50 amp RV plugs are much larger than a household outlet, so that’s why we need the adapter to make the connection.
  • Plug the adapter into your household outlet – Simply plug your RV cord into the female end of the adapter and then plug the male end of the adapter into your house outlet.

Plugging Your Camper in at Home: What Appliances Can You Use?

When you plug your RV into a standard household outlet, you will be limited on the appliances you can use in your RV.

Plugging your camper into your house is great for running small appliances like most RV fridges, the converter that charges your RV batteries, interior lights, and small plug-in electronics (e.g. phone or computer chargers).

Generally speaking, when your camper is plugged into your house, you could run a space heater or a hair dryer or your microwave.

But never try to run two power hungry devices at the same time when your travel trailer is plugged in at home.

If you do, you’ll likely trip your home circuit breaker and cut power to your entire RV.

Plugging Your Camper in at Home What Appliances Can You NOT Use

Plugging Your Camper in at Home: What Appliances Can You NOT Use?

Plugging your camper into your house generally won’t allow you to simultaneously run power hungry appliances like space heaters, hairdryers, and microwaves. You can get around this by only running one power-sucking appliance at a time.

That said, you will rarely – if ever – be able to run your air-conditioner while plugged into your house.

Air-conditioners usually hog so much power that they’ll trip most household breakers even if they’re the only thing running in your RV.

Can I Use the 220v Outlet for my Clothes Dryer/Oven to Plug in my RV?

Unfortunately, no.

Most electric stoves and clothes dryers in your home have a larger 220v outlet.

While this outlet might look like it’s made for your RV, trust us, it is not. In fact, even if you were to figure out a way to rig this up, you’d fry your RV’s electronics as soon as you plugged in.

So please do not try this.

All RVs large and small are wired up for 110v power and you will cause extreme damage if you try to run 220v power into your camper.

The good news is, your 220 volt outlet is not even compatible with any RV plug, so unless you perform some major modifications, it’s very hard to make this mistake!

Benefits of Plugging Your Camper into Your House

Even if you don’t plan on staying in your camper for awhile, there are many benefits to keeping it plugged in at home:

1. It will keep your batteries charged, allowing you to have 12volt power when not plugged in.

Just be sure to read your owner’s manual to make sure your battery charger is “smart” so it won’t overcharge your RV batteries.

2. It keeps your fridge running.

Let’s say you bring your camper out every weekend for football games… By leaving your camper plugged in, you can keep those game snacks and drinks cool in the fridge without having to move them.

3. Run ultrasonic pest controllers.

  • These devices keep pests away with high-frequency sound, but they need power to keep running while you’re away.

4. You can power dehumidifiers.

  • A great tool for keeping destructive moisture out of your camper.

I Keep Losing Power to My RV When Plugged Into My House. What Should I Do?

This usually happens when you pull too much power for your household outlet by running too many power-hungry appliances.

Remember that your air-conditioner will almost always not work when plugged into your house, so if you tried that and lost power to your RV, you know what the culprit is.

Or, perhaps you tried running the microwave and a hairdryer at the same time and power suddenly shut off?

Or, you may be plugged into an outlet that’s on a circuit with a low amp rating. Try plugging into an outlet in another part of the house to see if this resolves the problem.

In these cases, the most likely cause is that your household breaker has tripped, cutting off power to the outlet that you plugged your camper into.

This rarely causes damage, but is a message that you’re trying to pull too much power in your RV.

Simply shut off all electrical appliances in your RV, locate your home’s circuit breaker, and turn the tripped circuit back on.

Once you’ve done that, you should have power back to your camper. Just be sure not to repeat the mistake by running the devices (or combination of devices) that caused the power outage.

Always Use a Surge Protector When Your Travel Trailer is Plugged into Your House.

Surge protectors keep your RV electronics safe in the event that a power surge occurs.

If your RV is plugged into your house and the power grid surges, your camper’s electronics will get cooked – unless you have a surge protector.

RV surge protectors come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, but they will generally attach to your RV power cord.

By attaching a surge protector as you plug your RV into your home, you’ll help protect against this costly situation.

Whether you plan to moochdock, live in your own driveway, or just want to keep your camper powered up when you’re not using it, you can plug your RV or travel trailer into your house.

Before you plug in, it’s important that you understand the limitations and benefits that come with plugging a 30 amp or 50 amp RV into a household outlet.

Can You Hook an RV Up to Your Home's Electrical System?

Have you ever noticed an RV sitting in someone's driveway and wondered if you could live in it that way? Well, the answer is yes - sort of! An RV can be hooked up to a home's electrical system, but there are some things you must know.

While it's not suggested to live in an RV outside a home for an extended time (although they can be insulated for longer-term efficiency), short trips will be fine for keeping the lights on during your travels. Let's look at how to hook an RV up to your home and what factors to consider when doing so.

Hooking an RV Up to Your Home's Electrical System

While you can hook your RV up to a home's electrical system, you won't be able to run every appliance or use the electricity 24/7. You will most likely need to set your RV up to be able to connect to the standard 3-prong household plug you use at home. Since your RV will need at least a 30/50 Amp hookup to power the rig, you'll be limited in what you can run connected to a home's 15/20 Amp electrical outlet.

You can hook up an RV up to your home's electrical system in one of two ways: You can ensure what you need is installed when you buy the RV, or you can install a 30/50 Amp hookup at home. If you are visiting a place often, it may be worth it to install a hookup for your RV at the destination.

If you are hooking up to a home's standard outlet, you can do this via an outdoor, all-weather extension cord and 15/20 Amp adapter for your RV's electrical hookups. You want this extension cord to be as short as possible going from your home to your RV to prevent it from overheating.

Follow these steps to hook an RV up to your home's electrical system:

  • Before you plug in the extension cord from your home to your RV, ensure all electrical appliances are turned off in your rig.
  • Turn off the breakers to your home, too.
  • Plug the extension cord into your RV's electrical hookups via an adapter, if necessary.
  • Then, reset your home's breakers.

If successful, you're setup properly and ready to use what you need. If not, your breaker will trip before you even head back to your RV.

If the breaker trips, unplug everything and venture inside your RV to ensure all appliances are in fact off, and nothing is plugged in using power anywhere in your rig. Try the above steps again.

If these steps still don't work, refer to your RV's manual, contact the manufacturer, or give the dealership a call to talk through the issue.

Limitations to Hooking an RV Up to Your Home's Electrical System

Unless you set up a fully operational RV pad at home, you will not be able to use 30/50 Amp setup and will not be able to use everything powered in your rig. To operate within safe parameters , you will only be able to use one appliance at a time in most cases. If you use more than one at a time, you'll trip your home's breakers.

The following RV appliances are electric hogs, so be cautious when running them for long periods of time or trying to run them with other appliances at the same time:

  • Air conditioning
  • Toaster oven

Appliances like TV, DVD players, laptops, and your refrigerator can be used at the same time without overloading even a 15/20 Amp connection in most cases. If you notice flickering lights or something turns off on its own, chances are you've overloaded the electrical connection between your RV and home.

Pro Tip: If you're parked in front of your house or someone you know, consider using their appliances rather than running yours whenever possible to conserve energy and prevent overloading the electrical system you're hooked up to for the stay.

When it comes to hooking an RV up to your home's electrical system, proceed with caution. You can damage both your RV and home's electrical system if you plug in and expect everything to work like normal. You need to take your time, understand how your RV works, how your home works, and then get everything hooked up properly.

If you're not sure if you should hook up even the smallest of RVs in your driveway, consult forums, dealerships, and others in the RVing community to make sure you're good to go. Otherwise, you may cause damage that'll cost you time and money to repair properly.

Can I Plug My RV into a regular 110 Household Outlet?

house & travel outlet

About the Author

Tom Davidock

One common question among RV owners is about the compatibility of their RV’s electrical system with standard household outlets. Specifically, many RVers want to know if they can plug their 30-amp or 50-amp RV into a regular household outlet. The good news is that you can safely plug your RV into a 110-volt outlet. However, you will need special adapters, and you should also be aware of the power limitations of this type of connection.

Travel Trailer plugged into household outlet

Understanding Your RV’s Electrical System

Modern RVs typically have a sophisticated electrical system designed to handle a range of appliances, from air conditioners to coffee makers. The system is usually built to work with either a 30-amp or a 50-amp service. These are quite different from the standard 110-volt home outlets. The key lies in understanding the amount of power your RV needs and what a standard household outlet can provide. If you think about the Amperage options as a bucket of power, the 50Amp will be the biggest, and the small 110-house outlets will be the smallest. When operating your RV, if you request more electricity than is available in that bucket, you’ll overload the system and trip a circuit breaker.

Tools you need to connect your RV to a household outlet:

To safely connect a 30 or 50-amp plug RV to a regular household outlet, which typically provides 110-120 volts at 15 or 20 amps, certain tools and adapters are essential. This process involves adapting the higher amp RV system to the lower amp household outlet without overloading the electrical system. Here are the key tools and equipment needed:

  • RV Power Adapter (Dogbone Adapter) : This is the most critical tool. For a 30 amp RV, you’ll need a 30A male to 15/20A female adapter. For a 50 amp RV, a 50A male to 15/20A female adapter is required. These adapters, often referred to as “dogbone” adapters due to their shape, enable the connection between the RV plug and the household outlet.
  • Heavy-Duty Extension Cord : If the RV is parked at a distance from the household outlet, a heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cord that can handle the amp requirements of the RV is necessary. Ensure that the cord’s rating matches or exceeds the amperage of your RV and the adapter being used.
  • Surge Protector : A surge protector designed for RV use is highly recommended to protect your RV’s electrical system from potential voltage spikes and irregularities that can occur with household outlets.
  • Weatherproof Outlet Cover (If Applicable) : If the household outlet is outdoors and not already weatherproofed, consider using a weatherproof outlet cover to protect against moisture and debris

The Amps Matter: 30-Amp vs. 50-Amp Service

Most large RVs are equipped with a 50-amp service, allowing the use of multiple large appliances simultaneously. Smaller RVs might have a 30-amp service, which can still handle a fair amount of power but less than the 50-amp. The standard household outlet, on the other hand, is typically a 20-amp or sometimes a 15-amp circuit. This difference in amperage is crucial when considering plugging your RV into a home outlet. Below is a basic breakdown of plug-in options for your RV:

Can You Plug Into a Standard Household Outlet?

The ability to plug an RV into a standard 110-volt household outlet is a convenient option for many RV owners, especially when access to dedicated RV hookups is not available. However, this practice requires understanding and adapting to the limitations and differences between RV electrical systems and standard home outlets.

Outdoor Outlet

Understanding the Power Difference

  • Ampere Capacity:  Standard household outlets typically provide either 15 or 20 amps, which is significantly less than the 30 or 50 amps that many RVs are designed to use.
  • Voltage Considerations:  While RVs are equipped to handle 110-volt systems, the lower amperage at home outlets means less overall power is available.

Using an Amp Adapter

  • Role of Adapter:  An amp adapter, also known as a dogbone adapter, is essential for connecting the RV’s power cord to a standard outlet. This adapter ensures the compatibility of plug types and safely steps down the amperage.
  • Choosing the Right Adapter:  It’s important to select an adapter that matches your RV’s plug type and the outlet’s amperage capacity. For instance, if your RV is equipped with a 30-amp plug, you’ll need a 30-amp to 15/20-amp adapter.

Managing Power Usage

  • Limitations on Appliance Use:  When connected to a standard outlet, the RV’s power usage must be carefully managed. High-power appliances like air conditioners, microwaves, or electric heaters might not run effectively or could trip the home’s circuit breaker.
  • Prioritizing Appliances:  It’s advisable to use only one major appliance at a time and avoid simultaneous use of multiple power-intensive devices.

Safety Precautions

  • Avoid Overloading Circuits:  Ensure that the household circuit you are connected to can handle the added load without overloading. This might involve turning off certain home appliances while the RV is plugged in.
  • Surge Protection:  Using a surge protector is highly recommended to protect the RV’s electrical system from potential power surges or fluctuations in the home’s electricity supply.
  • Regularly Check Connections:  Regularly inspect the adapter and power cord for any signs of damage, overheating, or wear.

Longer Term Solutions

  • For Extended Stays:  If you plan to connect to a home outlet frequently or for extended periods. or need access to a lot of power, consider installing a dedicated RV outlet, such as a 30-amp or 50-amp outlet, at home. This involves professional installation but provides a more reliable and safer power source for your RV.

In conclusion, while plugging an RV into a standard household outlet is possible, it comes with important limitations and safety considerations. Careful management of power usage and adherence to safety protocols are key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable RV experience.

RV Electric Plug

The Role of Amp Adapters and Surge Protectors

Amp adapters, such as a 30-amp or 50-amp to a 20-amp adapter, allow your RV to be plugged into regular outlets. However, this comes with a limitation on the amount of power you can use. Additionally, it’s wise to use a surge protector to safeguard your RV’s electrical system from any potential power surge or low voltage issues.

Limitations and Precautions

When plugging your RV into a 110-volt outlet, several limitations and precautions must be considered to ensure safe and efficient use of your RV’s systems. Unlike a dedicated RV park hookup, which usually offers higher amp receptacles, a 110-volt outlet typically provides less power, affecting the performance of various appliances and systems in your RV.

  • Amp Limit and Breaker Concerns : Standard 110-volt outlets in homes and some campgrounds are generally equipped with a 15 or 20-amp breaker. This amp limit is significantly lower than the 30 to 50-amp hookups found at RV parks. Therefore, operating high-consumption appliances like an RV air conditioner or electric water heater could easily exceed this limit, risking a trip of the circuit breaker.
  • Shore Power Considerations : When connected to a lower amp source, like a 110-volt outlet, the concept of shore power becomes crucial. Shore power allows your RV to draw electricity from an external source. However, with a lower amp supply, the number of appliances that can be safely used simultaneously is limited.
  • Managing RV Appliances : It’s advisable for RV owners to prioritize which appliances are necessary. Essential systems like the water pump can be used, but it’s best to avoid running multiple high-consumption appliances at once. For instance, using the RV air conditioner alongside other heavy appliances might not be feasible.
  • RV Batteries and Power Management : If your RV is equipped with batteries, they can be used to supplement the power supply, especially for smaller appliances and charging electronic devices. This approach can help in managing the overall power consumption and avoid overloading the 110-volt outlet.
  • Safe Usage of RV Outlets : Inside the RV, the outlets will also be limited by the lower amp supply. This means being cautious about what you plug into the RV outlets. Small appliances like a coffee maker or a laptop charger are usually safe, but larger appliances should be used judiciously. This is especially true for high power appliances like coffee makers or space heaters.
  • RV Power Cord and Adapter Use : When connecting to a 110-volt outlet, ensure that you have the appropriate adapter for your RV power cord. This will help in safely converting the plug to fit the 110-volt outlet without compromising the electrical system of the RV.
  • Monitoring Power Consumption : RV owners should be vigilant about their power usage. Devices like an amp meter can be useful in monitoring consumption, helping to ensure that the amp limit of the 110-volt outlet is not exceeded.

The Risk of Voltage Drop and Power Issues

Plugging into a home outlet also risks a voltage drop, especially if the outlet is not on a dedicated circuit or is far from the breaker panel. This can lead to damage to your RV’s electrical system and appliances. Always ensure the power source is stable and sufficient.

Safest Way to Connect- Choosing the Correct Extension Cord

The safest way to connect your RV to a home electrical system is through a heavy-duty, gauge extension cord, and ensuring the outlet is on a dedicated circuit. This minimizes the risk of overheating and power issues. These thin orange ones found at stores like Home Depot or Lowes are typically undersized for this application. Here are some important considerations when selecting an extension cord:

  • Length : Keep the extension cord as short as possible to minimize voltage drop and resistance. However, ensure it’s long enough to reach from the household outlet to your RV without being overstretched. A longer cord increases resistance and reduces the efficiency of power transfer, potentially leading to voltage drops.
  • Wire Gauge : The wire gauge, or thickness, of the cord is critical. For a 30 amp RV, a 10-gauge wire is typically suitable. For a 50 amp RV, look for a 6-gauge wire. The thicker the wire (indicated by a lower gauge number), the more current it can safely carry.
  • Quality and Durability : Opt for a heavy duty extension cord designed for outdoor use. It should be made of high-quality materials to withstand environmental factors like UV exposure, rain, and extreme temperatures. Look for cords with a sturdy, weather-resistant jacket.
  • Certifications and Ratings : Look for cords that are UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed or have similar certifications. This ensures that the cord meets specific safety and performance standards.
  • Weatherproofing : If you will be using the cord outdoors, consider a cord that is specifically designed to be weatherproof. This adds an extra layer of safety against moisture and debris.
  • Color and Visibility : A brightly colored cord can be beneficial for visibility, reducing the risk of tripping or accidental damage.

What About Larger Appliances?

For larger appliances, it’s better to use a dedicated 30-amp or 50-amp RV hookup. If you must use a home outlet, avoid running multiple high-power appliances at once. For instance, don’t use the AC unit and the hair dryer simultaneously.

Final Thoughts

While it is possible and sometimes necessary to plug an RV into a standard 110-volt outlet, it’s essential to understand the limitations and take the necessary precautions. Always use the right adapters, consider the power limitations, and prioritize the safety of your RV’s electrical system. For specific concerns or custom solutions, consulting with a professional RV dealer or electrician is the best course of action. Learn More about RV Electricity here:

Can I Plug My RV/trailer Into A Garage Or House Outlet?

motorhome rv parked plugged into a house garage outlet using a 30 to 15 amp adapter

Difference Between 30A/50A RV Park Outlets and House Outlets

Yes, you can plug your RV or camper trailer into a garage or home outlet. But there are a few things to know first.

First, the electrical output is a lot different. 50 amp RV outlets can output up to 12,000 watts, 30 amp up to 3,600 watts.

Related Product: Plug your RV into a 20 amp outlet in the wild using the EF EcoFlow Delta Max (click to view on Amazon)

Home outlets are usually rated for 15 or 20 amps. A 15 amp outlet can output up to 1,800 watts and a 20 amp up to 2,400.

House outlets aren’t going to supply nearly as much power as a 30 or 50 amp RV can draw.

Because of this, you are going to have to make sure you limit the electronics you use in your RV.

Note that many of these adapters also work when plugging an RV into a generator with a 15 amp or 20 amp outlet.

How To Plug An RV Into A House Outlet

15 or 20 amp rv.

Some very small campers only use 15 to 20 amps. If it’s a 15 amp you will be able to plug it into any of the outlets in your home or garage.

If it’s a 20 amp RV you will need to find a 20 amp outlet since the plug will not fit into a 15 amp.

15 amp vs 20 amp outlets found in homes and garages that can be used to plug in an rv

Large kitchen appliances and power tools are the most common household items that use 20 amp plugs.

That means you can sometimes find 20 amp outlets in kitchens and garages.

If you have a 20 amp outlet in your garage you will want to plug into that one since it will give you the most power.

A 15 amp plug can be plugged into a 20 amp outlet but a 20 amp plug cannot be plugged into a 15 amp outlet without an adaptor.

15 amp and 20 amp rv plugs that can be plugged into a house or garage outlet

So there’s no risk of you plugging a 20 amp RV into a 15 amp outlet without knowing it.

If you plug a 15 amp plug into a 20 amp the plug will still only be able to take 15 amps of power even though the outlet can technically output more.

You will know if your RV is 20 amp because the power plug will have one prong that’s sideways like in the graphic above.

If you’re home or garage does not have any accessible 20 amp outlets you can use this adapter (click to view on Amazon) to plug the 20 amp plug into a 15 amp outlet.

Plug Adapter Cable [UL Listed] 14AWG (1-Foot) NEMA 5-15P to 5-15/20R...

Remember a 15 amp outlet or adapter can only supply up to 1,800 watts. That’s 600 watts less than a 20 amp outlet.

It doesn’t sound like a lot but when you have a lot of things using power in an RV the watt usage can add up quickly.

Even large RVs can be plugged into home and garage outlets to run small electronics like the lights, fridge, TV, fans, and battery charger.

You won’t be able to use things like the electric water heater and air conditioner but for maintaining your RV batteries while your RV is parked outside your home plugging into a house outlet is awesome.

If your garage has a 20 amp outlet that’s going to be the best option since it can supply the most power.

30 amp to 20 amp adapters can be hard to find but there are some good options out there like this one by Parkworld (click to view on Amazon ).

Remember a 30 amp RV is capable of drawing up to 3,600 watts and a 20 amp outlet only 2,400. That’s a 1,200 watt difference.

The most common RV 30 amp to house outlet adapter is the 30 amp to 15 amp.

There are lots of great choices out there like this one by CircleCord (click to view on Amazon) .

A 15 amp outlet can only supply up to 1,800 watts. That’s half as much as a 30 amp outlet can supply.

It’s best to only use 15 amp adapter to power things like the fridge, lights, water pump, and battery charger.

Do not run the electrical water heater or AC. You may be able to run the microwave if you have the RV fridge turned off or switched to gas.

See Also:  How To Connect/Plug RV Camper Into Generator (15/30/50 Amp)

The amount of electricity 50 amp RVs are capable of using is incredible. Especially when compared to 30 amp RVs.

Usually, an RV is 50 amp so there’s enough power to run multiple air conditioners at the same time as other appliances.

Naturally, when plugged into a home or garage outlet you are not going to be able to use all the RV appliances you are used to using.

Much like with 30 amp RVs I recommend only plugging a 50 amp RV into a 15 or 20 amp wall outlet to keep the batteries charged and power small things like the TV, RV fridge, lights, and water pump.

You could also probably use the microwave if nothing else is drawing power.

Oddly enough I wasn’t able to find a 50 amp to 20 amp adapter. If you want to be able to utilize the 20 amp outlet in your home or garage you will need to use this adapter combo.

Once you have the 30 amp plug you can use a 30 amp to 20 amp (click to view on Amazon) to step it down to 20 amps.

Remember a 20 amp outlet supplies 2,400 watts while a 50 amp outlet supplies 12,000 watts.

To plug a 50 amp RV into a common 15 amp outlet all you need is an adapter like this one by RV Guard (click to view on Amazon) .

Finally, a 15 amp outlet supplies 1,800 watts. Compared to a 50 amp outlet that supplies 12,000 watts.

That’s the biggest power difference you can get in the RV world, so remember to only run the small stuff.

Biden is canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers. Here's who is eligible.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 3:29 PM EDT / CBS News

The Biden administration on Friday said it's canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers, with the recipients scheduled to receive emails today to alert them to their loan discharges.

The latest effort extends the debt relief provider under President Joe Biden after the Supreme Court last year blocked  his administration's plan for broad-based student loan forgiveness. With the latest batch of loan cancellations, the White House said it has forgiven about $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million student borrowers.

Biden, who had made student loan relief a major campaign pledge, is tackling an issue that affects about 43 million Americans with a combined  $1.7 trillion in student debt. It's a burden that some borrowers and their advocates say has harmed their ability to save for a home or achieve financial milestones, an issue that was echoed by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a conference call with reporters.

"I talked to a teacher in New York this week who took out a loan for $30,000," Cardona said Friday, "and after over a decade of paying and being a teacher the debt was $60,000, and she was saying that the interest was so high that the payments that she was making wasn't even touching her principal."

He added, "We are fixing a broken system. We're relentless and taking steps to transform a broken system into one that works people across the country."

Here's what to know about who is eligible for the latest round of forgiveness.

Who qualifies for the student loan forgiveness?

Three groups of people qualify under the latest round of debt relief, the White House said.

  • $3.6 billion for 206,800 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan.

About $3.6 billion will be forgiven for nearly 207,000 borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, an income-driven repayment program, or IDR, that the Biden administration created last year.

The White House said borrowers who are getting their debt discharged under SAVE had taken out smaller loans for their college studies. The plan allows people to receive forgiveness after they made at least 10 years of payments if they originally took out $12,000 or less in loans to pay for college; borrowers with larger loans are eligible after 20 or 25 years of repayment, depending on what types of loans they have.

"You sacrifice and you've saved for a decade or more to make your student loan payments, and you originally borrowed $12,000 or less, you're going to see relief," Cardona told reporters. "An overwhelming number of those who qualify for SAVE were eligible for Pell grants and come from low- and middle-income communities."

  • $3.5 billion for 65,700 borrowers in income-repayment plans.

These borrowers will receive forgiveness through "administrative adjustments" to repayment plans where loan servicers had made it tougher for some borrowers to qualify for relief.

"These are people who paid for a long time but were being deprived of relief because of administrative and servicing failures," Cardona said. "These people met the contract of their loan" and will receive forgiveness.

  • $300 million for 4,600 borrowers through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

The PSLF program is designed to help public servants like teachers and government employees achieve debt forgiveness after 10 years of repayment. It's a program that started in 2007 but had been plagued with complex rules that effectively hampered people from getting their debt discharged, with only 7,000 receiving loan forgiveness prior to the Biden administration.

With the latest round of discharges, the Biden administration has forgiven $62.8 billion in loans for 876,000 borrowers through PSLF.

Are there legal challenges to Biden's debt forgiveness plans?

In two separate lawsuits, Republican attorneys general in 18 states are pushing to have the SAVE plan tossed and to halt any further student debt cancellation. They say the SAVE plan oversteps Biden's authority and makes it harder for states to recruit employees. They also contend the plan undermines a separate cancellation program that encourages careers in public service.

It's unclear what the suits could mean for loans that have already been canceled. A court document filed by Kansas' attorney general says it's "unrealistic to think that any loan forgiveness that occurs during this litigation will ever be clawed back."

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

House Speaker Mike Johnson to deliver remarks with Trump on 'election integrity'

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson will travel to former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Friday for remarks about “election integrity” with Trump, two sources directly familiar with the plans confirmed.

Asked by NBC News what his news conference with Trump will focus on, Johnson, R-Fla., said: “You’ll have to see. ... I look forward to going down there."

Asked to elaborate on “election integrity," Johnson said: “free and fair elections."

CNN first reported plans for the remarks. The House is set to be in session Friday, but votes are expected to be held in the morning.

Johnson faces threats to his job from his right flank and scrutiny over his handling of thorny issues in a narrow Republican majority, including a military aid package for Ukraine and other U.S. allies that has been held up for months, despite his vows to pass new Ukraine aid.

Johnson is under tremendous pressure from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., another Trump ally, who has threatened to force a vote on a motion to oust him over funding for Ukraine. Greene, who argues that congressional attention and funding should be turned to the southern border rather than Ukraine, last month filed a "motion to vacate" to depose Johnson but stopped short of forcing a vote to remove him.

Mike Johnson

A Republican former senior congressional aide said that the meeting at Mar-a-Lago may send a message to Greene that Johnson is close to Trump and that Trump supports his continued leadership of the House GOP. “This seems to be more about motion-to-vacate mitigation than anything else,” the former aide said.

Before he was elected speaker, Johnson had boosted Trump's false claims of widespread election fraud in the 2020 presidential election and pursued legal efforts to invalidate President Joe Biden's electoral victory. In December 2020, Johnson led an amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn Biden's wins in four battleground states.

Johnson endorsed Trump in November, not long after he took the speaker’s gavel.

Although Trump did not announce an outright endorsement in the speaker's race last year, he seemed to boost Johnson's bid, writing on his Truth Social platform , “My strong SUGGESTION is to go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson, & GET IT DONE, FAST!”

Days after he announced his endorsement of Trump, Johnson met with him at a fundraiser for Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., at Mar-a-Lago in November.

Russia mistakenly doxed its own spies and secret bases by uploading their addresses on a public city hall website: investigative outlet

  • Russia accidentally exposed the locations of its secret bases and spy homes, per the Dossier Center.
  • It included them in a long list of buildings that are supposed to always have power, per the outlet.
  • The 434-page list was temporarily uploaded to the Moscow's city hall website, the outlet reported.

Insider Today

Moscow's city hall accidentally leaked the addresses of government safehouses, undercover facilities, and the homes of state operatives, the Dossier Center reported on Monday.

A 434-page list containing the addresses was uploaded on the city hall website. It appeared to be a guide for local electricity suppliers, wrote the investigative outlet, which was founded by the Russian opposition politician and activist Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

The document, titled "Special Group," earmarked specific buildings that authorities wanted to stay connected to in the event of blackouts or power shortages, reported the Dossier Center.

When Insider checked the Moscow city hall website on Monday, the document was no longer available online .

Several officials signed the document, including Moscow's mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, the Dossier Center reported.

Related stories

While most of the list covered the addresses of public institutions like metro stations, police headquarters, and hospitals, it also pinpointed secret locations like an ammunition depot in Leningrad and undercover facilities run by the Federal Protective Service, according to the Dossier Center.

In one case, the document even included the apartment numbers of two homes used by spies in Moscow, the Dossier Center reported.

A list of residential addresses also revealed at least six apartment buildings in Moscow that contain homes sold or given to intelligence officers in the Foreign Intelligence Service, Russia's top external intelligence agency, per the outlet.

About 10 other entries in the document listed buildings in Moscow used by agents of the Federal Security Service, Russia's internal security and counterintelligence agency, per the Dossier Center.

Further entries also revealed dozens of undercover offices and facilities used by the Federal Protective Service, which is responsible for guarding Russia's top leaders, and the Federal Security Service, the outlet wrote.

Many of these locations have already been identified as Russian intelligence facilities by investigative outlets such as Bellingcat , the Dossier Center noted.

Facilities and safe houses in the Primorsky, Leningrad, St. Petersburg, and Bryansk regions were also on the list, the Dossier Center wrote, showing screenshots of the document.

A spokesperson for the Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

Devastation in Gaza as Israel wages war on Hamas

By Chris Lau, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Natasha Bertrand

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials.

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem and CNN’s Benjamin Brown in London

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year.

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added.

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

US President Joe Biden gives remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus on Friday in Washington, DC.

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel.

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.

Israel intercepts rockets fired from Lebanon

From CNN's Benjamin Brown in London

Around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon on Friday evening, according to the Israeli military. Some were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

The IDF said there were no injuries.

Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah militants confirmed the rocket barrage, saying that they fired "dozens of Katyusha rockets" at Israeli artillery positions.

Hezbollah said it was in support of Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in response to Israeli attacks on civilian homes in southern Lebanon.

Israeli air defenses also intercepted two explosive drones, which the IDF said were deployed by Hezbollah.

The IDF said it had struck several locations in Lebanon to “remove threats.”

The post has been updated with more details on Israel's response to the rocket attack.

US sanctions leaders of Hamas' cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon

From CNN's Kylie Atwood and Sean Lyngaas

The US is sanctioning four leaders of Hamas’ cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on Friday.

“Operatives of terrorist group Hamas have used information warfare and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to facilitate terrorist violence across multiple fronts,” Miller said.

Those sanctioned include:

  • Hudhayfa Samir 'Abdallah al-Kahlut, spokesperson for the military wing of Hamas in Gaza
  • William Abu Shanab, the commander of the Lebanon-based al-Shimali unit
  • Bara'a Hasan Farhat, an assistant to Abu Shanab
  • Khalil Muhammad 'Azzam, an intelligence official

The al-Shimali unit manages the development and production of automatic 120mm mortars, mobile launchers for Grad rockets, development and production of flight simulators, UAVs for intelligence gathering and suicide UAVs, according to the Treasury Department.

“The United States will continue to target Hamas’s destabilizing attempts to launch terrorist attacks, as well as to disrupt Hamas terrorists wherever they operate, including across cyberspace,” Miller said.

Hamas and Hezbollah have developed moderately effective cyber capabilities in recent years, according to private experts who track them. Hamas has used those capabilities in espionage campaigns aimed at Israel and Arab governments for years, researchers have found. In an interview with CNN in November, Israel’s cyber defense chief alleged that Hezbollah-backed hackers had breached private security cameras in Israel to try to track the movements of Israeli soldiers.

Several journalists among those wounded in Israeli attack on refugee camp in central Gaza

From Mohammad Al-Sawalhi in Gaza and CNN’s Abeer Salman, Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem

People run with their belongings following a strike in Nuseirat on Friday.

Israeli forces surrounded and attacked the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Friday, wounding several journalists and at least one other person.

Turkish state broadcaster TRT accused Israeli tanks of launching a “targeted attack” on the journalists, including TRT Arabi cameraman Sami Shehada, who lost a leg, and correspondent Sami Barhoum, who suffered minor injuries. CNN stringer Mohammad Al-Sawalhi was also among those hurt.

The TRT statement called the assault "a deliberate attack against media professionals, marked clearly with 'PRESS' on their jackets" and said it was "part of a broader pattern of violence" against journalists in Gaza. As of Friday, at least 95 media workers have been killed covering the war, according to preliminary figures from the Committee to Protect Journalists.

CNN video shows Shehada's right leg was severed.

“We were filming in a safe place, I was wearing my flak jacket and my helmet — even the car I was in had a 'PRESS' and 'TV' sign marked on it. It was clear that I was a civilian and a journalist. We were targeted,” he told CNN from his operating bed.

“It will not stop me from working, even if I have to walk on crutches. I will show the whole world the crimes of the Israeli occupation against civilians, people and journalists. I am one of them and I will not leave my camera even if I die,” he told Al-Sawalhi.

CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on the attack and allegations that journalists were targeted at the camp.

Video from the scene: Footage filmed by Al-Sawalhi shows people — including children, women and the elderly — taking cover in shops and running away in panic as repeated artillery fire and gunshots can be heard in the near distance.

CNN spoke to an elderly man named Saleh, who said he was trying to flee the area after Israeli tanks surrounded the camp and that he'd been hit by shrapnel.

Moments later, Saleh could be seen crossing the street when intense artillery fire struck the road a few meters from where Al-Sawalhi was filming. The journalist was hit by shrapnel, slightly injuring his right hand.

Graphic footage of the aftermath shows the elderly man severely wounded, with a bloody head injury. Saleh, Al-Sawalhi, and a number of other journalists were taken to Al-Awda Hospital for treatment, CNN footage shows.

Recent attacks: Nuseirat camp, located north of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, has been the target of several Israeli airstrikes in recent days, including one that killed 14 people Tuesday , according to the spokesperson for Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

Israeli defense minister and top US general discuss potential Iranian attack

From CNN’s Jeremy Diamond in Jerusalem and Benjamin Brown in London

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant speaks during a meeting at the Pentagon on March 26 in Arlington, Virginia.

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla on Friday discussed preparations for a potential Iranian attack on Israel .

Gallant and Kurilla spoke about “readiness for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel, which may lead to regional escalation,” according to a statement from Gallant’s office.

Following the meeting, Gallant called Kurilla “a true friend of Israel” and thanked him for US support for Israel.

“Our enemies think that they can pull apart Israel and the United States, but the opposite is true — they are bringing us together and strengthening our ties. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder,” Gallant added.

The defense minister said Israel was “prepared to defend ourselves on the ground and in the air” and would respond “in close cooperation with our partners.”

The two met at the Israeli Hatzor Air Base near Ashdod in Israel's Southern District.

Pentagon moving additional assets to Middle East region in face of Iran threat, according to US official

From CNN's Natasha Bertrand

The US Defense Department is moving additional assets to the Middle East region, a defense official told CNN, as Israel and the US brace for a potential Iranian attack on Israeli facilities in the country and the broader region.

The move is "to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for U.S. forces," according to the official.

The Pentagon has been working specifically to reinforce air defenses for the US troops stationed in Iraq and Syria, who came under attack by Iran-backed proxy forces over 100 times between October and February. In January, three US service members were killed when a drone got through US air defenses at the Tower 22 base in Jordan.

The US is not anticipating that Iran or its proxies will attack US forces as part of its retaliation, but are moving the assets just in case.
