While it’s tempting to go for the top hashtags that have millions of posts, it’s best to keep to this smart strategy:

• About 2 hashtags that have more than 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 500,000 and 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 250,000 and 500,000
• 8 to 10 under 250,000

This gives you anywhere between 22 to 28 hashtags that you’re using, enough to give you visibility.

Instagram’s maximum recommended total for hashtags is 30.

I tend to use about 20 hashtags, as that’s my sweet spot – but for me, lately, it’s mostly home decor posts as I’m doing less travelling (that’s when this list of home decor hashtags comes in handy).

My ultimate favourite phone app for travel edits is Lightroom .

The free version is good – and you can add your own presets to it. The upgraded version gives you more controls for better editing, especially when it comes to landscape photography.

A hashtag is used on several social media platforms. It usually consists of a word or phrase with a # symbol preceding it.

Hashtags are used to identify digital content on a specific topic, and ultimately, helps users find relevant content related to that hashtag containing the word or phrase.

Specifically on Instagram, hashtags help sort out photos specific to the word or phrase.

You can find images and videos by looking up a hashtag and see all the photos and images that other people posted with the same hashtag.

Why use travel Instagram hashtags?

Using travel hashtags on Instagram as a travel influencer or a blogger is a must if you want your photos and videos if you want more than just your followers to see your content.

Without using hashtags, a small percentage of your current followers will see your post.

When you use hashtags, then both followers and non-followers can see your post.

Hashtags can improve the reach of your photo by 30-40%!

The more reach you get from hashtags, then Instagram will reward you by showing your post to more existing followers and vice verse.

There are three spots to put hashtags although people like to argue about which is the best spot.

At the Bottom of the Caption

The best spot according to Instagram is to put hashtags right in the caption at the bottom.

1st Comment of a Post

Some people argue that this clutters up their caption. Thus, those people will put it in the 1st comment meaning they post their post, then copy and paste hashtags in the first comment.

However, people say that putting hashtags in the comment limits the reach on posts.

You can test out what works best for you– hashtags in the caption or in the comments– or don’t over think it. Just post them in the caption.

Within Stories

Aside from your in-feed posts, you can use up to 10 hashtags in your Instagram story to widen the reach of your story.

How many travel hashtags for Instagram should you use?

The Instagram Creators account says to specifically use 3-5 hashtags but from personal experience and seeing what other travel bloggers do, 3-5 is too little.

On the other hand, this Adspresso study suggested that 11 is a sweet spot for hashtags.

I personally use about 15-18 because that works for me so you can test out what works for your accounts.

Focusing on the number is not the most important factor for hashtags to increase the exposure of your post though.

What matters is how often a hashtag has been used or how popular it is because if a hashtag has been used too many times such as #travel or #explore, then your posts won’t be seen under that hashtag page. It defeats the purpose to use such a large hashtag especially if you’re a smaller account.

What are the best hashtags to grow my account?

The best hashtags to grow your account are going to be ones that are very specific to your photo and also account size.

Again, if you have less than 5k followers and use a hashtag like #travel, which has been used 610 million times, your post will quickly disappear among other posts.

As a result, if you are a small to medium sized account, make sure to use that aren’t used as much so your posts will actually be seen in the hashtag page.

Pro Tip: If you use travel hashtags for Instagram reels, make sure they are specific as possible! I’ve noticed that you don’t need as many hashtags for Instagram reels as you need for in-feed posts too so test it out to see what works for your account.

What are some good travel hashtags to use?

As we mentioned above, the best travel hashtags are the ones that are really specific to your travel niche and your account.

A good hashtag strategy for Instagram is to 7-10 Low Competition hashtags, 4-6 Medium Competition ones and 1-2 High Competition hashtags.

The standard luxury travel hashtag for your content. Considering this hashtag has over 6.3 million posts, much of the content that is prioritized on the search page has followers that are over 50K. 

2. #luxurytravelandhotels – More than 1000 posts

If you have content that features super expensive and luxury hotels in Bali or the Maldives, then the #luxurytravelandhotels hashtag is the perfect hashtag for your content. 

3. #luxurytraveldaily – 76.6K posts

The #luxurytraveldaily is an excellent hashtag if you have extra content lying around that you want to post to inspire your followers.

Even if you are not an influencer yet (or you never plan to be!), coming up with a good hashtag strategy will help you connect to this world a little better. Once you’ve got your own system down it is super easy, too! You want to keep it unique so it won’t get buried in between other’s posts, and a good way to do that is to use a variation of topics. It is said between 5-15 is the optimal number of hashtags to have in your post, but you can add up to 30 if you feel inclined. You will want to use some referring to travel, some others specific to the setting your in, some specific to solo/couple/family travel, and lastly your destination. 

Creating a Hashtag Strategy:

The thing I like to do when adding travel hashtags to my post, is having a mixture of three different levels of hashtags. 

Level 1: Very Popular Hashtags –

These are hashtags that are super popular and while it is unlikely you will show up at the top of that hashtags feed, if you do get at the top of the hashtag’s explore page you will get an explosion of likes and followers. I have had the forune of having this happen early in my Instagram and it really jump-started my account.

Level 2: Popular But Doable:

The next level of hashtags are ones that are used often (10,000 – 100,000 times) but not the super popular hashtags. These are great because they reach a good size audience and you have a chance to end up at the top of that travel hashtags explore page. 

Level 3: Niche Hashtags

I love niche travel hashtags because honestly, these are often my most engaged followers. While the numbers on these hashtags are not huge the followers you gain are so engaged. I once got hundreds of followers because I used the #disneybeachclubresort while I was in Disney World. It only had about 1000 people who used the hashtag, but those looking to stay at the resort were so engaged with my content.

Top Hashtags

These may seem a little basic to you, but these are must-haves in your travel posts. Trying variations is often a good idea. For example, #travelers will probably get your post more attention than #travel because it’s unique. Like we said above, you will want to pair your travel hashtags with some tags more specific to you as well but we will start here!

If you are tired of figuring out what hashtags to use while posting your travel photos then you have reached to right spot. In this post we will be covering in detail about the Travel Hashtags for Instagram and which one to use while posting your travel content on Instagram.

Researching Instagram hashtags is boring! There, I said it for you. You probably enjoy taking amazing photos and sharing them with edgy captions to make your friends envious. But I doubt strategizing an effective hashtags strategy so you can amplify your reach is on your “fun-to-do list”.

A quick guide on how to get ranked as a top post in your favourite hashtag feeds

How your Instagram Travel Hashtags Strategy should look like?

Without teaching you how to use them, there’s no point in delivering a bunch of hashtags and letting you loose on the social network environment.

Great responsibility comes with great hashtags. It seems to be trivial, but mastering Instagram hashtags can build or break an account’s growth.

In your chosen hashtags, the aim of the game is to rank as a top post. By staying in the top 9 posts for a few hours or even a few days, this will amplify your scope and maximize your visibility. If you rank as one of the’ Top Posts’ successfully, the more posts in the feed, the better. However since popular hashtag feeds are highly competitive, this is not inherently good advice. You will get a few fast likes by using hashtags millions reach, but with an endless sequence of new posts, yours will vanish in seconds from the feed.

To increase your chances of ranking as a top post, depending on your interaction ratio, target feeds with less than 300k or less than 1 m posts. In smaller hashtags, when you rank as a top post, your engagement can snowball and you are likely to be included in larger feeds.

Start low and Aim high.

• 10 hashtags with feeds of < 250k posts
• 10 hashtags with feeds of < 500k posts
• 8 hashtags with feeds of < 1m posts
• 2 hashtags with feeds of > 1m posts

In case you want to take an alternate strategy you can use this option as well

Instagram allows you to use max 30 hashtag in one post. So use them smartly:

• 8 Hashtag with more than 1M+ feeds
• 10 Hashtag with 100K to 1M feeds
• 5 Hashtag with less than 100K feeds
• Now you left with 7 hashtags use them for a location or to define the post or as your mood.

How Many Travel Hashtags should I Use?

This is one debatable topic where everyone has their own personal preference but I have seen most of the travel Instagrammer using the complete 30 hashtags to exploit the option available.

Many Instagram experts suggest 11 hashtag is best for attracting new followers and it best for engagement. But I’m a fan of using all 30 hashtags sometimes it looks spammy but you can use the hashtag in comments as well. There is no difference in their functionality if you use hashtag in comments and captions in both cases it works same.

So you can post the picture with around 10 hashtags or so and write down the remaining hashtags quickly as your first comment.

One new strategy for Instagram travel hashtags which I use is that I post the content with 10-15 hashtags in starting for it to rank and once the post ranks on the City/Country hashtags and then it starts ranking everywhere else. This worked with my frankfurt post.

What is the trick of curating Photo related Travel Hashtags?

This will come as another strategy for deciding the travel hashtags to use for your next post on Instagram. Let us discuss the CW strategies of Instagram Post. Now the only reason why I am saying CW is that its Chasing Whereabouts .

You should know the W and G of the image which you are posting.

• Where – Where are you

It is best to use the location related hashtags in your picture. Where stands for that. Use the location hashtags for City/Village/town and the country.

• What (what are you doing)

What defines about the activity you are doing in the image. Usually just one hashtag as # walking , # trekking , # cycling , etc

• When (which special day, if any)

I add one hashtag however only if it is a memorable day like # nye  or # germanunityday #diwali #independanceday  or any other day that the photo is about.

Why are you adding the photo? Describe the image with few hashtags (4-5) as:

# market  # building  # street  # tram  # river #sunset  # awesome  # lovely  # amazing  etc

The fantastic thing of Instagram is that meanwhile, you write the hashtag you get a suggestion and the volume; stay below a 10M volume, if you have a choice. If you are a new blogger then stay below 100K.

• Get Ambitious

Add the two popular travel hashtags as discussed above (# travelphotography  and # travelling )

Add two travel hashtags used by the local tourism boards (usually city/area and country). This is the most important step. You may have a great outcome if they love your photo and re-post it, which usually gives wide visibility of your work. You may wake up the day after and have suddenly hundreds more of followers, just thanks to a re-post.

How do you find these local travel hashtags?

You need to google the travel tourism board website and see their Instagram account. Usually, they are the verified account with the name. You can also look for the city name and use the tag for the account which has the maximum followers on it.

• Get technical

Describe the type of photo from a technical perspective if you wish. Popular hashtags are #landscape #portrait #closeup etc. This is the least favourite of all and you can use it if you are running out of hashtags.

Travel Hashtags with 1M+ Feeds

These are the most common and popular travel hashtags on Instagram and the hardest to rank on top as well. So use them smartly or I’ll say use them for getting quick likes & comments, because when we are talking about engagement then how much to time to get the number of likes & comments also matter:

Some are more useful but less generic. Now, compared to the above list, you have a greater opportunity to rank at the top of hashtags by using these hashtags. A lower number indicates a lower level of competition:

• # doyoutravel – A hashtag that originates from the legendary Instagram master, Jack Morris @doyoutravel. The current usage is at 6m.
• #travelmore – Another one in the range of 6m usage on Instagram.
• #goexplore – A little less popular but with over 1 million posts, it will decrease your chances of getting ranked in the top 9 in comparison to hashtags with less than 1 million posts in the feed. Currently, it is on the 5m usage mark.
• #wonderfulplaces – A few more general hashtags that apply to most posts about travel!. Usage is at 2m.
• #openmyworld – For accounts pushing 1k likes per post, you still have to get pretty lucky to get featured in one of these hashtags. But it’s worth reserving a few out of your maximum of 30 hashtags allowed per post. Usage on 2m posts

There’s no point delivering a bunch of hashtags and letting you loose on the social media world without showing you how to use them.

With great hashtags, comes great responsibility. It seems trivial but mastering Instagram hashtags can make or break the growth of an account.

The aim of the game is to rank as a top post in your chosen hashtags. This will amplify your reach and maximise your exposure by remaining in the top 9 posts for a few hours or even a few days. If you successfully rank as one of the “Top Posts”, the more posts in the feed the better. However, this isn’t necessarily good advice because popular hashtag feeds are highly competitive. Using hashtags with ms of posts will get you few quick likes but with an endless series of new posts, yours will disappear from the feed in seconds.

The most important part of your tourism hashtag strategy is finding the right tags to use. As we’ve already mentioned, this should include both high-level hashtags (like #travel) and more specific hashtags (like #birdingtours).

The high-level hashtags will help you maximize your impressions. This will get the most people possible to see your post and potentially interact with your content. If you just want to get more likes, then using these popular hashtags will help.

More targeted hashtags will help you grow a more authentic audience. If you want to use social media to attract potential customers, then you’ll need to be specific about your hashtags.

Using both hashtags together will help you achieve both things at the same time.

How To Find Travel Hashtags?

There are a few different ways that you can approach hashtags to find the right ones for your brand.

Start by analyzing your competitors. Search for your main competition (preferably a business that has excellent social media engagement and a lot of followers), and look at what hashtags they are using. If these hashtags also apply to you, then take note.

Next, simply search for the kind of hashtags you think would work. Type keywords that describe your business into the search bar, and look for recommended hashtags. You may notice other travel bloggers get their posts featured on hashtag pages, but you don’t see hashtags in their captions. There are ways to hide your Instagram hashtags so that they don’t clutter your caption. Most Instagram bloggers use one of two methods.

Method one is to place your hashtags in a comment. This will still attach real hashtags to your post, and your post can still be featured on hashtag pages or Instagram explore for that hashtag, but saves you from a long, messy caption. You can only comment discoverable hashtags on your own posts; if you comment a hashtag on another account’s post, it will not place that post on the hashtag page.

A second option is to create space in your caption. Instagram does not allow the “enter” button to actually create blank space in captions, so to do this you should type out your caption in a separate app like the Notes app. Many bloggers create this space by putting a piece of punctuation or an emoji on each line and pressing enter. If your destination offers great fishing, you can use your Instagram posts to help attract all kinds of visitors who like to fish, including women. Here is a screenshot of top posts that used the #FishingGirls hashtag – 405,486 posts total as of this writing. Click the screenshot to view them.

Which hashtags will get your Instagram posts in front of the right people?

An amazing photo is not enough to get people’s attention on Instagram; it is merely a first step. The rest of the recipe for success is a compelling description, and the right hashtags . That’s because hashtags help more people see your posts, even if they don’t already follow your account.

Hashtags work on Twitter, Facebook, and even LinkedIn, but right now they are  most effective on Instagram .

Hashtags are just words with the pound or hash symbol (#) in front of them. Most social platforms turn hashtagged words into clickable links, so you can see all similarly-hashtagged content in one place.

For example, if your visitors include people who like to fish,  here are all IG posts hashtagged #FishingLife , a popular community hashtag. If you specifically want to reach women who fish,  here are all the IG posts hashtagged #FishingGirls .

Hashtags are not case-sensitive (we are using capitalization for the ones in this blog post, to make them easier for you to read) and you can use up to 30. We recommend using only one or two relevant ones in the actual IG post description, and putting the rest into a comment below the post.

People can also  follow a hashtag on Instagram – hit the blue Follow button, then photos and videos with that hashtag will show up periodically in your IG feed.

Start With the Most Obvious Word

Let’s say you decide that one of your marketing goals over the next year is to attract more homeschooling family visitors , along with  remote workers  and  remote schoolers while the COVID pandemic has so many people working and learning online.

It is one way to fill those empty hotel rooms , mostly for day use but also for more extended escapes.

You’ll want to lead parent visitors to your attractions that are good for remote learning, or “schoolcations” as Port Aransas and Mustang Island, Texas, calls it in this blog post.

Which Instagram hashtags would help support this marketing goal?

Start with the obvious related words:  #homeschool ,  #RemoteLearning , and  #RemoteWork .

The top (most popular) photos and videos show up at the top of the Instagram search results page, and most recent ones if you scroll a little further down (see note below.) You’ll also notice that when you search a particular hashtag, there’s a dropdown showing you the numbers for how people have used that tag in a post, plus related hashtags. Very handy for research.

Note – right now, as we approach Election Day (November 3, 2020) in the U.S.,  Instagram has turned off the Most Recent posts feature to stop the spread of disinformation. We expect to see it restored once the election is over.    Most Recent hashtags listings have been restored. 

Instagram will tell you how many posts have used a hashtag, so you can quickly tell which ones are most popular – #homeschool was used on 4,735,547 posts as of this writing.

That means it’s popular, but that also means it’s “noisy” and your particular post may be overlooked as it has to compete with millions of others.

—->> You want hashtags that have “mid-range” popularity  but are still used a lot in a particular community of Instagrammers.

One example relates to  bicycle tourism  – cyclists posting on Instagram usually use the obvious hashtag –  #cycling – but they also include community tags such as #RoadsLikeThese  and  #FromWhereIRide . A few minutes of Instagram hashtag research will help you find those organic, community hashtags that really resonate with a particular visitor group.

More focused, niche hashtags are still used on thousands, even millions of posts, but it’s not as hard to break out and be visible with them.

Instagram Hashtag Research After “The Obvious Words”

Using those obvious hashtags as a jumping-off point,  dig into which  other  hashtags the most popular posts tend to use . That is when you will start to see patterns that help you select the most effective hashtags to reach a certain visitor, guest, or customer.

Let’s go back to our example of trying to attract remote workers, remote learners, and homeschoolers.

You’ll find variations on the obvious #homeschool hashtag, like #homeschooling or #homeschooler, but you’ll also notice  opportunity-rich community tags  like  #ThisIsHomeschool  (60,000+ posts in a variety of settings) and  #WildAndFreeChildren  (over 1 million posts mostly of kids doing outdoorsy activities.)

Are any of your destination Instagram photos or videos appealing to parents of “wild and free children” doing outdoor-related learning? Include the hashtag in those IG posts!

In popular #RemoteWork posts we noticed additional hashtags like #WorkFromAnywhere ,  #DigitalNomad , and  #LaptopLifestyle , many of which had a strong “this person likes to travel” vibe.

Is one hashtag going to fill your destination, attraction, or hotel with visitors? Probably not, but no hashtags at all – or not  taking the necessary time to research the best ones  – guarantees that a particular post will not have nearly the reach that it might have had otherwise.

Miami pharmacist’s trafficking case casts spotlight on ‘horrific’ child sex tourism in colombia.

MIAMI – Experts say the arrest of a Miami pharmacist is bringing new attention to the prevalence of child sex tourism in Colombia.

Authorities said just as Stefan Andres Correa stepped onto a Miami International Airport jet bridge to board a flight to Bogotá Friday, an outbound border search revealed the 42-year-old — traveling alone — was carrying about nine cellphones.

On some of those devices, Homeland Security Investigations agents based out of MIA would discover photos and videos of Correa raping young girls and a conversation with a sex trafficker about his plans to victimize an 11-year-old girl, prosecutors allege.

Court documents state that in a graphic series of text messages, Correa promised that both the trafficker and the girl would get $300,000 Colombian pesos — about $75 — and the girl would receive an iPhone, as long as he was allowed to rape her in Medellín.

He had similar conversations and made similar promises about another girl of similar age, prosecutors allege.

“I don’t want her to say ‘no,’” they allege Correa texted the trafficker in Spanish, later telling him, “Please don’t interrupt, no matter what happens, OK?”

Investigators said Correa told them he flew to Colombia on numerous occasions to sexually abuse children. Prosecutors said that records show he traveled to Colombia roughly 45 times since 2022.

Medellín’s mayor sounded off on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, after the arrest, posting in part: “These abuses against our children have been occurring with great intensity for years. We are not going to rest in this fight that has only just begun.”

Mayor Fico Gutiérrez added the English hashtag “#Don’tEvenTryIt.”

“Unfortunately since the ‘Cocaine Cowboy’ days back in the 80s there has been a war on children and that has led to the sexual exploitation of children,” attorney Kristen Reynoso Jackwin, who has represented clients in federal investigations, told Local 10 News. “It is children as young as 12 years old and they are finding U.S. citizens with children in hotel rooms and it is horrific.”

Gutiérrez recently announced new measures to combat child sex tourism, including seizing properties from owners that allow the sexual exploitation of minors.

Jackwin said while she commends the mayor, more needs to be done.

“Because simply shutting them down, there are always other ways that they can open up new locations to continue to do this exploitation of children,” she said.

Jackwin said prosecuting cases is not the only objective outlined in a partnership between the U.S. and Colombia, signed two years ago, but explained it is key to robustly combatting child sex tourism.

That partnership is called the U.S. – Colombia Child Protection Compact .

“You actually prosecute the offenders and that has been an issue, because a lot of these cases are not actually prosecuted,” Jackwin said. “There are 200,000 children in Colombia that are affected by sex crimes every single year and a mere couple of thousand are actually prosecuted, so making more strides that the prosecution happens and these children are treated as victims as opposed to perpetrators of crimes themselves.”

The U.S. Embassy in Colombia has promoted joint measures with officials in the country to combat sex trafficking.

Medellín: The sinister side of an increase in global tourism

Local 10 News spoke with an expert to explain why Medellín has developed a reputation for child sex trafficking.

Larry Gumbiner, a retired U.S. diplomat who spent two stints at America’s embassy in Bogotá, said Colombia is “opening up to the world and, with that, you are seeing a lot of the underbelly of international tourism, which is the international sex tourist trade.”

Gumbiner now works at consulting firm WestExec Advisors as its senior advisor for Latin America and the Caribbean. He said Colombia went through decades of low tourism owing to internal conflict between the country and guerilla groups.

Gumbiner said when that finally calmed down, “it kind of opened up a whole new country that had not been available to many tourists.”

“So you began to see, particularly in Medellín which was the epicenter of Pablo Escobar’s fiefdom — and it was a dangerous place to be for many years — finally became opened up to the world,” he said.

As the city has cleaned up its image, cracking down on the drug trade to attract tourists, with that has come child sex tourists, Gumbiner said.

“It is a wonderful city, lots of attractions, great weather, attracting tourists and along with that, what we have seen, prostitution is legal in Colombia for adults, but prostitution among minors began to explode and with it developed a reputation as a place you can go, because it’s inexpensive for Americans,” he said.

Gumbiner added that Gutiérrez is likely weighing in on the issue now because the recent high-profile arrests of U.S. citizens there has catapulted the issue into the court of public opinion.

“This has been building for many years in terms of Medellin and the growth of this industry,” Gumbiner said. “It built into a crescendo when they found an American citizen with two underage girls in his hotel room. I think, finally, for the political system, it reached a breaking point where the mayor felt he had to do something.”

As for Correa’s case, the pharmacist, facing federal charges of attempted sex trafficking of a minor and attempted travel to engage in illicit sex conduct, is scheduled to appear in Miami federal court Friday for a detention hearing.

If found guilty, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison with a maximum sentence of life in prison, as well as up to a lifetime of supervised release.

No booking photo was available for Correa; mug shots are not provided for suspects in federal custody.

In practice, however, booking photos are typically available in South Florida federal cases originating in Fort Lauderdale, since those suspects are generally jailed through the Broward Sheriff’s Office, rather than federally, while they await their court dates. Correa’s case, though, originates in Miami federal court.

Animal groups are urging tourists not to visit Wyoming after a man hit a wolf then took it to a bar

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — As Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming opens for the busy summer season, wildlife advocates are leading a call for a boycott of the conservative ranching state over laws that give people wide leeway to kill gray wolves with little oversight.

The social media accounts of Wyoming’s tourism agency are being flooded with comments urging people to steer clear of the Cowboy State amid accusations that a man struck a wolf with a snowmobile, taped its mouth shut and showed off the injured animal at a Sublette County bar before killing it.

While critics contend that Wyoming has enabled such animal cruelty, a leader of the state’s stock growers association said it’s an isolated incident and unrelated to the state’s wolf management laws. The laws that have been in place for more than a decade are designed to prevent the predators from proliferating out of the mountainous Yellowstone region and into other areas where ranchers run cattle and sheep.

“This was an abusive action. None of us condone it. It never should never have been done,” said Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and a Sublette County rancher who has lost sheep to wolves. “It’s gotten a lot of media attention but it’s not exemplary of how we manage wolves to deal with livestock issues or anything.”

Wolves are federally protected as an endangered or threatened species in most of the U.S. but not the Northern Rockies. Wyoming, Idaho and Montana allow wolves to be hunted and trapped , after their numbers rebounded following their reintroduction to Yellowstone and central Idaho almost 30 years ago. Before their reintroduction, wolves had been annihilated in the lower 48 states through government-sponsored poisoning, trapping and bounty hunting into the mid-1900s.

Today, Wyoming has the least restrictive policies for killing wolves. There are limits on hunting and trapping in the northwestern corner of the state and killing them is prohibited in Yellowstone and neighboring Grand Teton National Park, where they are a major attraction for millions of tourists. But outside the Yellowstone region, in the 85% of the state known as the “predator zone,” they can be freely killed.

The wolf allegedly was run down, shown off and killed within the predator zone.

Wolves roam hundreds of miles and often kill cattle and sheep. Gray wolves attacked livestock hundreds of times in 2022 across 10 states including Wyoming, according to an Associated Press review of depredation data from state and federal agencies, the most recent data available. Other times livestock succumb to other predators, disease or exposure or simply go missing.

Losses to wolves can be devastating to individual ranchers, yet wolves’ industry-wide impact is negligible: The number of cattle killed or injured in documented cases equals 0.002% of herds in the affected states, according to a comparison of depredation data with state livestock inventories.

The predator zone resulted from negotiations between U.S. and Wyoming officials who traded away federal compensation for livestock killed by wolves in exchange for allowing free killing of wolves in that area.

Saharai Salazar is among out-of-staters changing their travel plans based on what allegedly happened Feb. 29 near Daniel, a western Wyoming town of about 150 people.

The Santa Rosa, California, dog trainer posted on the state’s tourism Instagram account that she would not get married in Wyoming next year as planned. The post was among hundreds of similar comments, many with a #boycottwyoming hashtag on social media in recent weeks.

“We have to change the legislation, rewrite the laws so we can offer more protection, so they can’t be interpreted in ways that will allow for such atrocities,” Salazar said in an interview.

Wyoming’s rules have long invited controversy but are unlikely to harm the overall population because most of the animals in the state live in the Yellowstone region, said wolf expert and former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wolf biologist Ed Bangs.

Bangs said the incident of the wolf brought into the bar was a “sideshow” to the species’ successful recovery. The predator zone is made up largely of open landscapes that generally don’t support wolves, he said.

Wyoming’s rules, including the predator zone, have withstood multiple court challenges that have put wolves on and off the endangered species list since they were first delisted in 2008. Wolves haven’t been on the list in the region since a 2017 court order and their current Wyoming population of more than 300 is similar to their number in 2010.

Though state law doesn’t specify how wolves in the predator zone can be killed and doesn’t specifically prohibit running them over, the Humane Society and others argue the state’s animal cruelty law applies in this case.

Widely circulating photos show the man posing with the wolf with its mouth bound. Video clips show the same animal lying on a floor, alive but barely moving.

The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office said it has been investigating the anonymous reports of the man’s actions but has struggled to get witnesses to come forward.

“We’ve had the tip line open for two weeks hoping for witnesses or something helpful,” sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Travis Bingham said. “I know there’s some hesitation for people to come forward.”

The only punishment for the man so far is having to pay a $250 ticket for illegal possession of wildlife.

The suspect has not commented publicly and did not answer calls to his business. Calls to the bar went unanswered.
