Brief History of Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch was founded by Dr. Gerritt P. Judd back in 1850. He came to Hawaii from the East Coast to help treat Native Hawaiians who were battling diseases and new illnesses.

After seeing how Waikiki and Honolulu were quickly developing, he decided to purchase the 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch property for $10,000 in order to preserve the sacred land.

Image of a red ranch with a bunch of concrete stairs in front and green mountains in the background.

Today, eight generations later, the land is still owned and managed by Dr. Judd’s descendants. They offer tours, event rentals, and commercial activities in order to keep the land at Kualoa undeveloped and pristine for future generations.

Eating at Pat’s Cafe: a Kualoa Ranch Restaurant

One of the cool things about Kualoa Ranch being an actual working cattle ranch and farm is that they have some of the freshest food items. I highly recommend stopping at Pat’s Cafe for a meal.

Image of tropical chicken with rice and macaroni salad at the Kualoa Ranch restaurant.

They have a great menu selection of classic American dishes plus some with islands twists. You’ll order your food at the counter and then pick it up and find a table.

They also have lots of grab and go snacks and beverages, so it’s a great place to stop after you’ve checked in for your tour and are waiting around.

Kualoa Ranch Gift Shop

Our family’s motto is we’ve never met a gift shop we didn’t like. Well, it’s really the case with this one!

Image of a rack of Aloha shirts with baby clothes in the background.

They have a TON of cool items if you’re Jurassic Park fans or love the other movies filmed here. There’s quite the selection of merchandise.

I’d recommend placing an order for your food first and then head into the gifts shop (it’s in the same building) to go shopping.

Other Things to do Near Kualoa Ranch

One of the top questions I see families ask is about what else there is to do near Kualoa Ranch. Maybe you have a morning tour and want to know how to spend the rest of your day if you stay on that side of the island.

Here are a few easy suggetions:

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

The botanical gardens in Hawaii are pretty impressive and one of the most famous gardens on Oahu is the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden.

Tips for Hawaii on a Budget featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: HO'OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN is a popular photo spot on Oahu

It’s only a few minutes away from Kualoa Ranch and it’s one of the top places to take Instagram photos on Oahu . You’ve probably seen their iconic entrance that features a road in the midst of a gorgeous garden.

But, they also have events throughout the year. And it’s just a pretty place to walk around.

Byodo-in Temple

Another thing to do in Kaneohe is check out the Byodo-In Temple . It’s also a nice photo spot and you really will feel like you’re touring Japan.

The Byodo-In Temple is a popular Oahu photography spot.

It doesn’t take very long to explore this area, so it makes a quick stop either before or after a tour at Kualoa Ranch.

Kualoa Beach Park

Finally, there’s always the BEACH!

Kualoa Beach Park is pretty awesome because it has a huge parking lot and a long stretch of beach. That means it’s really easy to visit.

Plus, it’s right across the street from a large grassy field. That’s a great spot for kids to burn off the rest of their energy before heading back into the car to drive back to your hotel.

Kualoa Ranch Tips for Families

I know a lot of families like to be spontaneous in Hawaii or wait to book activities until they get there. However, the most popular Kualoa Ranch tours often sell out months in advance.

Image of a boy wearing a Jurassic Park shirt in front of a wooden sign that says Kualoa Ranch.

So, if you know that you want to do a specific tour or have date restrictions, it’s best to book early!

Bring Extra Clothes

Depending on the tour you do, you might end up getting really dusty or at least sweaty. And some of the tours even require long pants and closed-toe shoes. That means you might be really hot by the end of the tour.

So, it’s nice if you can change into fresh clothing. And you might even want to bring baby wipes to wipe away sweat or dirt and feel a bit more refreshed.

Take Lots of Photos

There are so many epic views and cool movie sites to see that you’ll want a good camera with you (that can totally be a cell phone). You might also want to bring a gimbal or a GoPro if you want to capture video while doing the activity.

Family Matching Shirts

If you want to be “extra” you can really get into the spirit with matching Jurassic Park shirts for your whole family. I found our set on Etsy and they had a LOT of fun options!

Image of a family wearing matching Jurassic Park shirts.

You could also look on Amazon, Kohl’s, or Target to see what they have. We got a ton of compliments on our shirts and it made the kids feel special.

“Travelled with my mother. We had the best day! Very well organized, no issues with anything. Staff were all really friendly and helpful. One of the best things we’ve done on Oahu. Will definitely be back!” – Visitor (Trip Advisor)

“We took the 1-hour raptor ride with our 5 year old boy and had a blast!! The scenery at Kualoa Ranch is simply out of this world and we had so much fun on the ride as it was sunny one moment and raining the other. It was so much fun with the rain hitting hard against our face, going up and down the bumps and navigating the tight turn! This is definitely a must-try and once in a lifetime experience if you are there! Don’t miss this especially if you are traveling with young ones and is not able to take the ATV ride.” – Visitor, Singapore (Trip Advisor)

The Best Tours at Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is most easily recognizable as the “real life” Jurassic Park. The 4,000 acre nature preserve is a one-stop shop for outdoor enthusiasts, movie buffs, and history lovers. Although the ranch is a tourist hotspot on Oahu, it’s definitely worth the hype; and a tour (or two!) should be included in every visitor’s itinerary.

NOTE: As of January 5, 2022-  Stay up to date on Oahu’s travel guidelines  here . Furthermore, consult the  Hawaii Travel Requirements  website before you plan your trip to any Hawaiian island.

About Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa ranch history.

Established in 1850, the ranch is owned and managed by the 8th generation of the original family. Since the 1970’s, Kualoa Ranch has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Kualoa is considered one of the most sacred places on the island of Oahu. Legend says that Kualoa once was a place of refuge and forgiveness for Hawaiian natives.

What Kualoa Ranch is Used for Today

Kualoa Ranch. Oahu, Hawaii

Stretching across steep mountain ridges, lush valleys, and sandy beaches, Kualoa Ranch focuses on sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, and educational recreation activities.

The 4,000 acres is roughly divided into two regions. The northern half is called Kaʻaʻawa Valley. Kaʻaʻawa Valley is nicknamed “Jurassic Valley” and is the main site for many filming locations. The southern half is called Hakipuʻu Valley which includes Moli’i Pond, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond, and a secluded island named “Secret Beach”.

Moli'i FIshpond and Chinaman's Hat

The preserve is still a working cattle ranch with 600+ head of cattle, 120 horses, and 200 sheep. You’ll probably see many of the cattle up close and personal on any given tour across the valleys.

Of course, many connect the ranch to Hollywood blockbusters as the ranch has been the site of over 70 movies since the 1950’s. In addition, many more tv series and movies are currently being filmed at Kualoa.

Kualoa Ranch Tips

How to get to kualoa ranch.

When driving yourself around the island, Kualoa Ranch is a scenic 30-40 minute drive from Honolulu. Allowing for extra time, take a leisurely cruise along the Kalaniana’ole Highway to soak in ocean views and stunning cliffsides. Or take the quickest (yet, still just as gorgeous) route along the H-3 or Pali Highway.

Honolulu’s City Bus also offers an affordable trip to the ranch, however, it will be a longer commute than driving on your own. Check out TheBus website for fares and schedules.

What to Bring to Kualoa Ranch

  • Snacks (Although, there is a café attached to the gift shop for any munchies!)
  • Camera (Preferably one that is waterproof or water resistant.)
  • Closed toe shoes
  • Umbrella/ Rain Jacket/ Poncho
  • Bug Spray/ Lotion
  • 2020- Present Requirement: Proof of Hawaii residency and/or QR code or negative test results. Also, a mask.

Need to Know Before Visiting Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch

The weather can be unpredictable on the windward side of the island. The lush greenery is a result of numerous showers. Be aware that there is a good chance of rain at any given time. Don’t worry! The showers tend to pass quickly.

Book early! Many tours sell out weeks in advance. This is especially true now that there is limited capacity of how many people are allowed on a tour.

For additional tips, try brushing up on info with Kualoa Ranch FAQs .

Check-in early! You don’t want to be late to the safety instructions briefing before your tour or miss out on an opportunity to explore Kualoa Ranch grounds.

Since 2020 Covid restrictions, some things have changed a bit at the ranch. There are smaller group sizes (which is pretty nice!) and some tours have been altered. For example, there used to be an Ocean Voyage, Taste of Kualoa Farm Tour, and Ranch House Buffet Lunch. These activities are currently not available.

Kualoa Ranch Activities & Tours

Jurassic adventure tour.

  • 2.5 hour tour
  • Good for adults and children (minimum age of 3 years)
  • 8 guest capacity limit
  • Open air “Jungle Jeep” ride and some walking

Jurassic Adventure at Kualoa Ranch

The Jurassic Adventure is a recent addition to Kualoa Ranch tours. Advertised as a deluxe adventure, it truly lives up to the description! We loved this tour because it covered both valleys and we took our time exploring the movie sites.

We discovered that the Jurassic Adventure tour was the best of both the Hollywood Movie Sites tour and Jungle Jeep Expedition.

Jurassic Park Jungle Expedition

After a brief overlook of the Moli’i fishpond and Chinaman’s Hat, we cruised into the rainforest. The tour started off with checking out the Indominus Rex pen from Jurassic World!

Jurassic World at Kualoa Ranch

Our guide also showed us the interior room where they filmed the viewing area for the Indominus Rex paddock. We checked the monitors for the thermal signature of the Indominus, but thankfully found no sign of her! -wink-

Jurassic World Jurassic Adventure Tour

Following a quick stop at the WWII army bunker (which I will discuss further into the post) , the second half of the tour consisted of more in depth exploration of Kaʻaʻawa Valley.

The tour consisted of all the major filming spots for Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Fifty First Dates, Godzilla, Lost, Hawaii Five-O and, of course, Kong Skull Island!

Kong Skull Island on Jurassic Adventure

Many of the other movie site activities at Kualoa Ranch simply drive by the Kong Skull Island boneyard, however, the Jurassic Adventure tour gave us the opportunity to walk around the skeletons.

The cattle are usually grazing around most of the valley, therefore keep an eye out for cow patties (a.k.a. POOP) ! Also, we found it interesting that the skeletons were made of Styrofoam!

Overall, Jurassic Adventure was our favorite Hollywood tour because it included all of the iconic film sites in both valleys of Kualoa Ranch.

ATV Raptor Tour

  • 1 hour or 2 hour tour
  • Good for adults and older children (minimum rider age of 5 years)
  • Minimum driver age of 21 (drivers may swap out mid-tour)
  • Maximum of 6 people per vehicle
  • Open air ATV ride and some walking

ATV Raptor Tour Kualoa Ranch Oahu Hawaii

The ATV Raptor tour is definitely a great choice for the adventurers! Although you are required to follow a guide across the ranch, it’s fun to be in control of the off-road vehicle. Also, it’s a bit more intimate exploring with just your immediate party.

Jurassic World Kualoa Ranch

We opted for the 1 hour excursion, which took us across many trails and viewpoints in Kaʻaʻawa Valley that we hadn’t seen on other tours at Kualoa Ranch.

Early in the tour, the rain rolled in. Our guide quickly and safely navigated us off the road. She stopped us under the canopy of Monkey Pod trees to wait out the initial downpour. We became completely soaked in the open air ATV! This is a perfect scenario where the poncho or rain jacket would have come in handy.

ATV Raptor Tour Kualoa Ranch

As per usual for Hawaii showers, it passed quickly and we were able to journey forth in our tour. Briefly, we lingered at the WWII army bunker. However, we did not venture inside to see the artifacts, props, or memorabilia on display in the exhibits.

Navigating across the valley, our guide stopped briefly in the rainforest to show us a passion fruit! Locals call it Lilikoi and she split the fruit in half for us to sample. It was a tasty and surprising treat.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Bunker

The excursion also consisted of a stop at the Jurassic World bunker. We were able to see and touch the plywood and Styrofoam that made the bunker look like concrete. In addition, the cages were on display that were used in the movies to showcase the dinos.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Dino Cages

Similar to the other activities at Kualoa Ranch, we explored the filming hotspots along the valley.

The ATV Raptor tour is a more exhilarating and intimate way to traverse the ranch. We squealed with delight as we crossed creek beds, accelerated up muddy hills, and flew through the rainforest. Even though this tour is not acceptable for young children, it is a great alternative for adults to let loose and teenagers to enjoy an off-road expedition of Jurassic Park!

Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

  • 1.5 hour tour
  • Good for adults and children (no minimum age)
  • 10+ guest capacity (larger group size)
  • Open air vintage school bus ride and some walking

Jurassic Park Fallen Tree

The Hollywood Movie Sites tour is the most popular and family friendly excursion. All ages are welcome on this activity and it’s ideal for those who want to see the best of Kaʻaʻawa Valley.

The first stop is at the WWII army bunker that is built into the side of a mountain. In addition, the bunker is overlooking the coastline and you’ll get to bask in the oceanside scenery.

WWII Army Bunker Kualoa Ranch

Similar to the Jurassic Adventure tour, you’ll get to stretch your legs and meander through the exhibits of the bunker.

We were most excited about and interested in the Lost props and memorabilia! John’s outback attire is on display, as well as, the top half of the submarine, the Dharma computer used to enter the world-saving code, and more fun sights from the show!

Hollywood Movie Sites Tour Lost

Furthermore, other films such as Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, and Hawaii Five-O have mementos on display in the bunker.

Hollywood Movie Sites Tour Jumanji

The Hollywood movie site tour continues on into the valley with views of the Godzilla foot print, the Easter Island replica, the iconic Jurassic Park log, and even Hurley’s golf course from Lost!

Godzilla Foot Print Kualoa Ranch

One of the most interesting parts of investigating the movie sets at Kualoa Ranch is seeing what is behind the movie magic. Nearly all of the structures or props were created with plywood, Styrofoam, or other lightweight material. Don’t be shy to take a peek when you stop during the tour!

The Hollywood Movie Sites tour is a great option for families with young children and older visitors who don’t want to exert themselves.

Hollywood Movie Sites Replica

Horseback Walking Tour

  • 2 hour tour (1 hour tour is currently unavailable)
  • Good for adults and older children (minimum age of 10 years)
  • Minimum high 4’6” and maximum weight 230lbs
  • 6-10 guest capacity limit

Horseback Riding in Oahu

The Horseback Walking tour was hands down my favorite activity at Kualoa Ranch! Of course, I’m a horse lover at heart and nothing was more enjoyable than witnessing the beauty of the ranch on a leisurely ride through the valley.

However, if you are hoping for more chitchat from your guide or other tourists, perhaps this tour is not going to live up to your expectation. Because of the distance in the group, it’s a little tougher to hear the guide and the party you’re with.

Horseback Walking Tour Kualoa Ranch

Also, unlike many of the other tours on the ranch, you do not dismount at any moment during the ride. Therefore, the movie sites and other iconic spots in Kaʻaʻawa Valley are only enjoyed from the back of your horse.

Horseback Riding Kualoa Ranch

We witnessed stunning views of the ocean and ridges of the mountains. Also, we spotted the “kissing gorillas” on the ranch. If you look closely at the rock formations below, you can make out the the snout, eyes, and forehead of the gorillas (or baboons to some) .

Kissing Gorillas at Kualoa Ranch Oahu Hawaii

Cruising amongst the rainforest, through the herd of cattle, past the Godzilla foot print, across the boneyard of Skull Island, and along the ridge overlooking the ocean made this tour extremely peaceful.

Regardless of the lack of extensive movie site trivia and photo opportunities, horseback riding quickly took first place in my heart at Kualoa Ranch. If you’re looking for a more outdoorsy adventure and you love horses, this tour is for you!

Other Tours

We have not participated in the Jurassic Valley Zipline, Electric Mountain Bike, or Secret Island Beach Adventure. You can find more info about these tours here .

Before many businesses shut down in 2020, Kualoa Ranch once offered additional activities such as Ocean Voyage, Taste of Kualoa Farm, and Ranch House Buffet Lunch. Will these be offered once again in the future? Who knows! Stay up to date with current packages and activities at the Kualoa Ranch website .

Ocean Voyage Tour at Kualoa Ranch

Each tour at Kualoa Ranch is distinct and takes you on an adventure unique to itself! It’s not wasted time to indulge in a full day trip to this historic preserve on a trip to Oahu, Hawaii.

How to use a snorkel.

Hi, is the holliwood one and the jurassic adventure too diferent in the bumpy ride? How bumpy is bumpy in the jurassic adventure one? Are they any restroom stops for kids?

Hi Gabrielle! The Hollywood Movie Site Tour is less bumpy because it’s on a large school-type bus that doesn’t go very fast. The Jurassic Adventure is bumpier because it’s on a smaller off-road type vehicle. They go a little quicker over rough terrain on the Jurassic Adventure tour, so I wouldn’t suggest it for anyone with back problems. Also, no, there are no restrooms once you’ve begun the tour- so, it’s best to use the restrooms at the visitor center/gift shop before your tour starts!

Is there a big difference between Jurassic Adventure tour and Movie site tour? Will the raptor pen be included in all the tours or just in the ATV?

Hi Sue! There is a big difference between the Jurassic Adventure tour and the Hollywood Movie Sites tour.

Jurassic Adventure is a much longer tour that takes you through both valleys (Hakipu’u and Ka’a’awa) at Kualoa Ranch. The Jurassic Adventure focuses more on the film sites for Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. While the Hollywood Movie Site tour only takes you through Ka’a’awa Valley and talks more about other film sites besides the Jurassic movies.

As far as I can recall, we did not stop at the Jurassic World bunker or raptor pen on the Hollywood Movie Site tour. We only drove by it.

I hope this was helpful and enjoy your time at the ranch!

On the ATV tour do you get to see all of the Jurassic Park things??? Or is one better for that?

Hi Melissa! If you want the best of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, I’d highly recommend the Jurassic Adventure Tour. It takes you to both valleys (Hakipu’u and Ka’a’awa).

When we did the ATV tour, it was a 1 hour tour and we only visited Ka’a’awa Valley. However, I see on the Kualoa Ranch website they are only offering the 2 hour ATV tour right now. So, that may mean they have more time to explore both valleys and see all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World film sites. I would call the reservation desk at Kualoa Ranch to ask what the 2 hour ATV tour entails.

Is it worth adding jungle jeep tour on top of the jurassic adventure? Or it’s kind of covered in the jurassic adventure already?

Hi Jenny! I can’t say for certain because I have not participated in the Jungle Jeep Expedition Tour. However, from what I understand on Kualoa Ranch’s website, the Jungle Jeep Expedition seems to be an abbreviated version of the Jurassic Adventure Tour. Jungle Jeep Expedition still covers most of the same film sites (Jurassic World, Jurassic Park, Kong Skull Island, etc.), however it is shorter in time and has fewer stops (like to Battery Cooper, the bunker). Also, it appears there is a short hike that is included in the Jungle Jeep Expedition tour which is not included in the Jurassic Adventure Tour.

Thank you for the informative post! Was there anything that was missing from the Jurassic tour that was included in the Hollywood movie tour? Was the wwii army bunker in the Jurassic tour? Is it repetitive to do both of them?

Hi Sarah! You are so welcome! When we went on the Jurassic Adventure Tour, we stopped at the WWII Bunker and we did a short pit stop at the Kong Skull Island film site. However, in the Hollywood Movie Site Tour, we stopped at the iconic Jurassic Park “log” and took photos at other film locations in Ka’a’awa Valley.

They both cover a lot of the same ground, but I would say that the Jurassic Adventure Tour definitely focuses more on all things Jurassic Park/World and covers both valleys at Kualoa Ranch while the Hollywood Movie Site Tour focuses more on the various film sites of the ranch and only covers one valley.

I hope this is helpful! Happy planning!

I was wondering about if you have a recommendation for the Half-Day (Hollywood + Ocean Voyage) vs. Jurassic Adventure? I have two kids (age 7 & 11) and we can’t decide which would be best. Any advice would be great.

Hi Manny! So sorry this response is late! If you haven’t already gone on your Kualoa Ranch tour, I would suggest the Jurassic Adventure if your kiddos are REALLY into Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.

However, if they are just general fans of Jurassic Park/World and love being on boats- I’d choose the Ocean Voyage and Hollywood Tour! The Ocean Voyage is a great way to see the ranch from the water and Chinaman’s Hat. We also saw turtles!

Does the Jurassic Adventure have the LOST stuff also or is that just in the movie tour? I can’t decide which we should do if I really want to see the LOST stuff and some of the jurassic stuff. thanks!

Hi Mary! The LOST film sites at Kualoa Ranch are mainly in Ka’a’awa Valley and Battery Cooper (the WWII bunker). Both of these sites are covered in the Hollywood Movie Site Tour. However, when we did the Jurassic Adventure Tour, we also saw everything in the Movie Site Tour and more. So, to be sure, I would call Kualoa Ranch and ask if the Jurassic Adventure tour includes a stop at the WWII bunker. I hope this was helpful for you!

Jurassic Park Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Kualoa Ranch

What do Jurassic Park, Lost, and 50 First Dates all have in common? They were all filmed at Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii! If you’re planning to visit Oahu , I highly recommend spending some time at Kualoa Ranch. I went during my one week trip in Oahu, and it was easily one of the best things we did.

About Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre Private Nature Reserve. The reserve got its start in 1850, when King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd which included Mokoli’i, the small island known as “Chinaman’s Hat.” Later, Judd’s son purchased more land in the from Queen Kalama’s land holdings to increase the area to the 4,000 acres it is today.

Although it’s known as Jurassic Park Hawaii, there have been tons of other films and shows filmed on the property. Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Pearl Harbor, and Godzilla are just some of them. Kualola also serves as a venue for private events and weddings.

The reserve aims to protect the lands from development by offering tour and activities that are sustainable and compatible with the environment. Continue reading to see what tours they offer.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki. Kualoa suggests getting to the ranch 45 minutes prior to your tour, and I believe that’s to accommodate for traffic and road construction. If your tour is 11:45 AM attempt to get to the ranch by 11:00 AM and you’ll probably actually get there at 11:15 AM. If you leave at 11:00 AM to get there by 11:45 AM, there’s a good chance you’ll miss your tour.

Tour Transfer

Kualoa also offers transfers from Waikiki to their property for certain tours. The tours eligible for transfers are Jurassic Adventure Tour, Ocean Voyage Tour, UTV Raptor Tour, Jungle Expedition Tour, Hollywood Movie Sites & Ranch Tour, Jurassic Valley Zipline, E-Bike Tours, Horseback Tour, Best of Kualoa Experience Package, and the Half Day Package.

Tour transfers cost $30 per person + tax. As there is no door-to-door service, you’ll want to find the nearest pick up location to your accommodation. Pick up locations are, Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and The Modern Honolulu.

Tips for Visiting Kualoa Ranch – Jurassic Park Hawaii

Definitely plan on booking in advance! I actually had to rearrange our itinerary to fit in our visit. The tours we took stared filling up about 3 weeks in advance. Also, I overheard one of the employees talking to a couple interested in taking a tour, and she said they were completely sold out for the day and that they only had two available for the next day.

On another note, give your self plenty of time to get to get to your tour. Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki, but there’s often traffic, construction, and there was actually a one-way section that took us about 10 minutes to get through.

jurassic park hawaii

How much does it cost to visit Kualoa Ranch?

Tours range from $51.95 USD – $174.95 USD + tax for adults, and $36.95 USD – $99.95 USD + tax for children.

Can you visit Kualoa Ranch without a tour?

Unfortunately, no. The property is massive and there’s tons of tours happening at all times. It wouldn’t be very safe to wander around given the terrain. Also, all tours on the ranch are guided.

What is Kualoa Ranch known for?

Kualoa Ranch is known for being the real life Jurassic Park. On the property, there’s signs detailing filming locations for different movies and TV shows. I saw some for Jurassic World, Lost, and Kong Skull Island.

Really enjoyed our tour, especially the mini-movie set tour prior to getting to the actual Zipline. Jacob was the most memorable because he made it fun with fun questions and humor, but all the staff were friendly, funny, and personable. Beautiful views throughout.

What Is Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is one of the oldest and most revered ranches in Hawaii. Located on Oahu’s windward coast near Kaneohe, this 4,000-acre ranch offers breathtaking views with lush green valleys and majestic mountains.

Kualoa Ranch is a working cattle ranch, but it has also served as an iconic filming location since the 1950s. It has been featured in films such as Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates , Jumanji , and many more.

Lots of cattle in the field at Kualoa Ranch seen during our ATV Raptor tour, with some spectacular mountain views.

Note About Kualoa Ranch Tours

Before we begin, I want to mention that the tour duration includes safety briefings and training. I’ve seen multiple reviews where people said the tour was shorter than expected.

We have been on many tours in Oahu and Kualoa Ranch specifically, and we have never felt like the tour was too short compared to what was advertised.

So, with that said, let’s dive in and look at the top tours at Kualoa Ranch!

1. ATV Raptor Tour

⭐  RATING:  4.5 out of 5 stars  | Duration:  2 hours

Age Restrictions: 21+ years to drive; 5+ years to ride

The ATV Raptor Tour is a thrilling adventure that takes you through the heart of Kualoa Ranch’s Jurassic Valley.

Guests will ride in all-terrain UTVs through dirt roads, passing by movie sets and other landmarks.

This two-hour tour also includes an experienced guide who will take you to some of the ranch’s most beautiful and remote locations. Your guide will share stories about Kualoa Ranch’s rich history, culture, and movies filmed there as you explore its unique terrain.

Each ATV can hold between two to six people depending on your group’s number of kids.

This is an excellent option for those looking for a thrilling adventure and stunning views of the ranch.

Note:  This tour is officially known as the UTV Raptor Tour, but we are referring to it as the ATV tour because most tourists call it the ATV tour. Your guide will be the only one driving an ATV while everyone rides UTVs.

Tip:  This is the most popular tour at Kualoa Ranch, so be sure to book ahead of time! Also, this is a rain-or-shine tour, so be sure to come prepared and check the weather in advance.

We wore raincoats during our tour because mother nature blessed us with rain. If you do not have a raincoat, they sell some ponchos for cheap.

A line of UTVs at Kualoa Ranch parked on the side during our tour.

What’s Included:

Why we love this tour: This tour is the perfect mix of adventure and exploration. You will have an action-packed day, from driving your ATV to learning about Kualoa Ranch’s history! Also, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though we did this tour on a rainy day, he still made the experience fun and exciting.

Cons: Very dusty and muddy, but that’s part of the adventure! So, make sure to wear clothes you are okay with getting dirty.

2. Jurassic Adventure Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2.5 hours

Age restrictions : 3+ years

The Jurassic Adventure Tour is a guided tour that takes you to iconic movie sets such as the original Jurassic Park , Jurassic World , King Kong , Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , and more.

The tour begins in an open-air off-road vehicle, where you will journey through the lush valleys and rugged terrain of Kualoa Ranch. The ride might be a little bumpy, but nothing too intense.

The tour also covers some historical sites, including an old World War II bunker.

Along the way, you can take pictures with some of the props used in different films. Your guide will also share stories about the movies filmed there and interesting facts about Hawaiian history and culture.

Our favorite part of this tour was stopping at the famous Jurassic field where the Gallimimus flock towards the cast! It was surreal to see a place where some of our favorite scenes were shot.

People sitting in the Jungle Adventure Tour bus at Kualoa Ranch.

What’s included:

  • Guided tour

Why we love this tour: We loved seeing some of the iconic movie locations. It was also a fantastic way to learn about the different movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Also, the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Cons: Some might find this tour a bit pricey, but it’s worth the experience.

3. Jurassic Valley Zipline

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 hours

Restrictions:

  • Age: 18+ years old if unaccompanied by an adult
  • Height: Between 4’8” – 6’9”
  • Waist Size: Between 22″ – 50″
  • Upper Thigh Size: Between 18″ – 28″
  • Weight: Between 70 and 280 pounds

The  Jurassic Valley Zipline Tour  is another thrilling way to explore Kualoa Ranch with friends and family. This zipline tour consists of seven ziplines, five short hiking trails, and two suspension bridges.

Guests will take a shuttle to the zipline base camp, where they will be fitted with a harness and helmet. Safety briefings are included before each zipline.

All ziplines are tandem (dual) and range from 200 feet to 1/4 of a mile in length. The lines start easy and get progressively more challenging, but nothing too scary, in our opinion.

The longest zipline is the fourth one, and the fastest one is the seventh giving you time to get used to the experience before it gets more intense.

After the tour, guests will return to the zipline base, where you can purchase photos taken throughout the tour.

The valley at Jurassic Park with some mountain views and some clouds in the sky.

  • All necessary gear

Why we love this tour: The adrenaline rush of flying through Jurassic Valley on a zipline is an unforgettable experience. Also, we love dual zip lines, as these tend to move faster than other single-line tours we’ve been on.

This tour reminds us of ziplining with Outfitters Kauai, one of the best zipline tours in Kauai. If you are ever in Kauai and looking for a tandem zipline experience, definitely check it out.

Cons: Some customers mentioned that most lines were moderate. If you are a very experienced zipliner and an adrenaline junkie, this one might not be the right tour.

4. Horseback Walking Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 hours

Age: 10+ years old

Height: minimum 4’6″

Weight: maximum 230 pounds

If you would rather explore Ka’a’awa “Jurassic” Valley on the back of a horse, then you should join this two-hour walking tour. The horses are well-trained, so even if you have never been horseback riding before, you can still enjoy it.

The tour begins with an introductory lesson about how to ride your horse correctly and safely. Your guide will then help everyone get on their horses.

The tour will take you along the trails of Ka’a’awa Valley, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and see some of the locations used in film productions.

The trails are easy to navigate, and your guide will give you interesting information about the area as you ride.

The horses at Kualoa Ranch before our tour, with some gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: The horseback riding tour is a great way to intimately explore Kualoa Ranch and Ka’a’awa Valley. It’s a peaceful way to take in the breathtaking views and learn about the area’s history.

5. Jungle Expedition Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 Minutes

Age Restrictions: 3+ years old

The  Jungle Expedition Tour  is one of the best ways to explore Kualoa Ranch with less work on your part.

You will be driven in a custom-built open-air jungle vehicle to explore the Hakipu’u rainforest. This is the same gorgeous valley seen in Jurassic World , Jumanji , Kong: Skull Island , and more.

The ride is bumpy and fun, and you’ll learn about the history of Kualoa Ranch and the surrounding areas from your guide.

Guests also have the option to take a short 15-minute hike to a scenic overlook with incredible views of the valley.

The lush scenery at Kualoa Ranch with some spectacular mountain views.

  • 15-minute hike (optional)

Why we love this tour: If you don’t have the time or prefer sitting back and taking it all in, this is the perfect way to explore Kualoa Ranch. We also love that this tour is one of the cheaper options and is suitable for people of most ages.

Cons: While this tour includes some stops on movie sets, it has fewer stops than the other tours or the Movie Sites Tour. If your primary goal is to visit most movie sets, this tour might not be the best one. It focuses more on the jungle, the beautiful views, and a fun ride.

6. Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

Restrictions: None

Are you a movie buff? Then the  Hollywood Movie Sites Tour  is perfect for you! This tour has the most movie stops of all the tours listed.

You’ll explore the iconic backdrops used in movies and television shows since the 1950s. Some stops include Jurassic World , Godzilla , Windtalkers , 50 First Dates , Pearl Harbor , Jumanji , and more.

Your guide will take you on a vintage school bus and provide interesting information about the production and filming of the scenes.

This tour also stops at the World War II bunker, where you can find WWII artifacts and exhibits, props, posters, and memorabilia from movies and shows that have been shot at the ranch over the years.

A little village inside of Kualoa Ranch during the Movie Sites Tour with gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour has the most movie stops. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting stories about the production and filming of each movie. It felt surreal to be standing in the same place where our favorite movies were filmed.

7. Electric Mountain Bike Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 Hours

Height: Between 4’6” – 6’5”

Weight: Between 85 – 250 pounds

Do you want to explore Kualoa Ranch in a more active way? Then the 6-mile  Electric Mountain Bike Tour  is perfect for you!

You will get outfitted with an electric mountain bike as you explore Kualoa and Ka’a’awa Valleys with your guide. The e-bike makes it easy to cover more ground in less time, with minimal effort on your part. The trail is a gravel/rocky path, but the e-bike and its suspension make it much easier to traverse.

Enjoy spectacular views of Kaneohe Bay, Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat Island), and Kualoa Valley. At certain spots along the trail, your guide will stop for photo ops so you can capture some amazing shots of the scenery.

This tour includes 5-6 stops. During the first stop, you will explore the World War II bunker and its artifacts. After that, you’ll explore the valley and the movie sets.

E-mountain bikes parked on the side of the trail during our tour at Kualoa Ranch.

  • Electric mountain bike rental

Why we love this tour: We love the idea of exploring the ranch on an electric bike. Electric bikes make it easy for people of all skill levels to enjoy the ride. Also, electric bikes are much quieter than ATVs, so it’s a peaceful way to explore nature.

8. Secret Island Beach Adventure

⭐  RATING: 4 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 Hours

Looking for an adventure that includes a beach? Then the  Secret Island Beach Adventure  is perfect for you. On this tour, you’ll explore Kualoa’s secret beach and take part in many activities.

Guests can participate in kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach volleyball, and more. The beach also has hammocks under palm trees for those that want to relax and enjoy the view.

Showers and changing rooms are available on the beach. Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, drinks, snacks, and whatever else you need for the beach.

  • Beach Activities

Why we love this tour: This is a unique experience. You get to explore the secret beach at Kualoa Ranch and participate in many beach activities with your friends or family. Also, the tour guides are very friendly.

Cons: This tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys, so this might not be the best tour if that’s what you’re looking for. This tour is best for those wanting to spend time at a private beach.

9. Kualoa Grown Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

The  Kualoa Grown Tour  is perfect for those that want to learn about local Hawaiian farming.

Guests will tour one of Hawaii’s most preserved ancient Hawaiian Fishponds (Moli’i), carbon-dated between 800 and 1,000 years old.

For over 800 years, Moli’i has been used to raise fish and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the  United States Department of the Interior .

You’ll also get to explore flower gardens and tropical fruits of Moli’i during the tour.

  • Access to Moli’i Fishpond

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour focuses on agriculture. You get to learn about the ancient Hawaiian culture and traditional farming methods that have been passed down for generations.

Cons: Just like the Secret Island Beach Adventure, this tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys.

Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour vs. Jungle Tour

The main difference between the movie tour and the jungle tour is that the movie tour focuses on movie sets, locations, and TV shows filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Overall, the movie tour has more stops at movie sites than the jungle tour.

On the other hand, the jungle tour focuses more on the natural beauty of Kualoa Ranch and its lush green valleys. It also includes some stops at movie sites but is more focused on the flora and fauna of Kualoa Ranch.

Which one should you choose?  It depends on the experience you are looking for when choosing between these two tours. We recommend the movie tour if you’re interested in seeing movie sites and learning about filming locations.

If you’re looking for something more focused on nature and natural beauty, plus some movie location stops, then the jungle tour is a great option.

Kualoa Ranch is located on the east side of Oahu. Below are the two best ways to get there:

Kualoa Ranch Questions & Answers

kualoa ranch tour times

Hi: what is the best day/time to take the horseback ride tour at Kualoa Ranch that you would recommend?I'm thinking the earlier in the day the better. Is it better and less crowded earlier in the day? We will be staying in Haleiwa so how long should we allow to get to Kualoa?Do you get a choice of horses as I'm going to need a mellow horse vs my sister who's very experienced. Best way to get there to avoid traffic? I'm definitely going to book ahead of time. We will be staying from Sept.1 through Sept.5. Mahalo for your replies! Denise

kualoa ranch tour times

aloha Denise, from Haleiwa you're about an hour away depending on the traffic. There's only a single lane road along the coast (Kamehameha Highway) that you'll have to travel on to get here. The afternoon is actually a lot nicer (and cooler) in my opinion ... and you could probably just take your time driving along the coast, stopping at a shrimp truck or somewhere along the way for a lunch before arriving in the afternoon. That's the way i'd recommend doing it. Hope this helps! aloha, Kualoa Ranch

kualoa ranch tour times

Haven't done the horseback ride, but the ATVs were really fun! Remember that you'll be on the windward (east) side of Oahu and we do get more rain here.

There's a tour behind Tropical Farms nut store (on Kamehameha not far from Kualoa Ranch) You are taken on a rickety old bus to an amphitheater for a show and then you take a short boat ride into the lagoon where movie sites are pointed out. It's actually funny. All of our visitors have loved it. Walk around the store to the back to sign up. The first one of the day is at 11.

kualoa ranch tour times

I got an online discount for booking an afternoon zip line tour from their website. I don't know if that's available for horseback riding, but it might be worth your while to check into it. We were there in April so the weather in the afternoon wasn't overly hot.

kualoa ranch tour times

Hi I agree take Kamehameha Hwy it is an easy drive & should take 50-55 min.Time of day is a personal preference based on your heat tolerance. We took the 2hr ride in the afternoon the early part of May & luckily had perfect weather. The staff is very nice so if you have any concerns please let them know because there are a lot of horses to choose from.Enjoy!

kualoa ranch tour times

I would take Kamehameha Hwy it's about 55 mins. Everyone heads to town to work so going towards the country you won't catch as much traffic.

If you take the freeway its about 1 hour and 10 mins. and you will most likely catch the morning commute traffic.

It's all up to you. If you prefer cool weather do the morning.

If you love the sun shinning on you then after lunch.

kualoa ranch tour times

They have lots of horses and they match them well to each persons experience level.

kualoa ranch tour times

My horseback ride was at 8:45 in the morning. It is a good idea to get there around the time they open, so you can get scheduled for all the tours you want to do. If you get there too late, they may not have openings. I don't know how long it will take to get to the ranch from Haleiwa. All of the horses seem mellow so you don't need to worry about that.

kualoa ranch tour times

We did our quad bike ride mid morning - I'd recommend this as a latest.

Once you’ve secured your flights, accommodations, and car rental, you’ll probably want to start planning your Oahu itinerary. Here are some of the most romantic things to do in Oahu for couples celebrating an anniversary or a kid-free getaway!

Check Out an Oahu Sunrise

One of the best things to do in Hawaii for a honeymoon is to watch the sunrise. Oahu is known for having some pretty epic sunrises, and because of the time difference from the Mainland, chances are you’ll be up pretty early on your first couple of mornings.

You might as well take advantage! Head to the East side of Oahu and score a front-row seat to one of the most romantic sunrises.

Make sure to bring your camera because you’re going to want to capture this special moment. Trust me, it’s an experience you’ll never forget!

Scenic Drive Around Oahu

If you’re doing a honeymoon on Oahu, I highly recommend taking a Circle Island Tour . That way, you both can sit back and take in the amazing views (plus enjoy some adult beverages when you stop).

Otherwise, you can totally drive it on your own. Hit up top Oahu attractions like the famous North Shore , Lanikai Beach, Kualoa Ranch , and Waikiki .

Ride an ATV Through Jurassic Valley

Are you a fan of Jurassic Park or want to see where some awesome movies were filmed in Hawaii? Then you probably want to do an ATV ride at Kualoa Ranch .

It’s technically a UTV, so you’ll be able to snuggle up next to your honey as you drive through all three valleys at Kualoa Ranch. There are places to hop out and take photos of movie sets or jaw-dropping views of the island.

This is such a popular activity that you’ll need to book it at least a month before your trip.

Indulge in a Couples Massage

A couple’s massage is one of the most romantic Oahu honeymoon activities. What could be more perfect than listening to the soothing rhythmic sounds of the ocean while the Hawaiian trade winds gently blow?

You can schedule this for your arrival day as the perfect way to get into vacation mode! Or plan this after a day of hiking or exploring to soothe your tired muscles. Either way, you and your sweetheart are sure to enjoy this luxurious experience.

You can find couples’ massages at many Oahu resorts, such as the Four Season Ko Olina, the Royal Hawaiian, or the Moana Surfrider. So go ahead and indulge in some rest and relaxation on your Oahu honeymoon!

Visit an Oahu Winery

Oahu is home to Oeno Winemaking , the only winery on the island. They offer tastings of their delicious wines as well as an opportunity to create your own label. That means you can design a Hawaii honeymoon wine label!

If you’re looking to branch out and try something other than wine, head over to Bottleheads. They offer tastings of beer, spirits, and wine.

And if you want to try Hawaii’s only indigenous alcohol, be sure to swing by Island Distillers . They offer tastings of their award-winning concoction. So whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just looking to branch out and try something new, Oahu has you covered!

Shark Cage Diving

For adventurous couples looking for something unique to do on their honeymoon, Oahu’s North Shore is a must-see. Home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the North Shore is also home to a large population of sharks.

Fortunately, there’s no need to worry about becoming a snack – visitors can safely see these creatures from inside a cage.

This tour is extra cool because there’s an option to just observe. That way, if only one person wants to actually go into the cage, the other person can watch from the boat. Plus, it’s the original Oahu shark cage diving tour so they know what they are doing.

Oahu Helicopter Tour

Oahu is an amazing place full of natural beauty. From the moment you land, you will be in awe of the stunning views. Oahu is home to majestic waterfalls , stunning mountains, and places not accessible by car.

Book a private helicopter tour for a special Hawaii honeymoon excursion you’ll remember for years to come!

Check Out Local Hawaiian Musicians

One of the most romantic things to do on Oahu is to listen to live Hawaiian music.

You can find live music at many tiki bars and restaurants across the island, including Duke’s Canoe Club and Kani Ka Pila Grille. These venues feature well-known Hawaiian artists every night, so you can sit back and enjoy the sounds of the islands while sipping on a Mai Tai or two.

If you’re looking for a truly romantic experience, listening to live Hawaiian music on your Oahu honeymoon is a must.

Do an Oahu Photoshoot

Oahu has everything you could want in a tropical honeymoon destination: gorgeous beaches, lush rainforests, spirited nightlife , and plenty of romantic Oahu honeymoon activities. And what better way to remember your Oahu honeymoon than with beautiful professional photos?

Oahu vacation photography is super trendy right now, so don’t settle for iPhone selfies. Book a professional photographer to capture some romantic moments on the beach or at another gorgeous Oahu destination.

Hawaii honeymoon photography is a great way to decorate your home with memories of your special trip or to make a unique honeymoon photobook.

Either way, you’ll be glad you had a professional Oahu honeymoon photographer capture your memories of this magical island.

We love working with Flytographer . They have affordable photographers throughout the islands.

It’s super simple to request and book Hawaii honeymoon photographers and you might even get the photos back before the end of your honeymoon!

Save $25 on your Flytographer photo shoot

Reserve a Private Pool Cabana

Many resorts offer private cabanas that you can rent for the day. Sometimes you don’t even need to stay at the resort to book one.

These cabanas come with private butler service and are the perfect place to spend the day sipping tropical drinks and snacking on Hawaiian pupus.

You can rent private cabanas at Turtle Bay Resort, Alohilani Resort, Four Seasons Ko Olina, and more.

Swim with Dolphins

Oahu is a great place for an epic honeymoon experience, and one of the most memorable activities you can do is swim with dolphins !

There are several options available, from playing with them to fully getting in the water and going for a swim.

Dolphin Quest at the Kahala Hotel offers quick dolphin encounters or you can spend up to an hour with these beautiful animals. You can even reserve a week-long experience where you help train mammals!

So whether you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience or a unique way to celebrate your love, swimming with dolphins in Hawaii is sure to create lasting memories.

Book a Snorkel Tour

One of the coolest ways to snorkel in Oahu is by booking an Oahu snorkel boat tour . This one takes you to check out sea turtles and hidden spots in North Shore Oahu. It’s sure to be a highlight of your Oahu honeymoon!

And make it a bit more special by bringing along an underwater camera so you can snap a few romantic photos during your experience!

Go Horseback Riding

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, why not go on a horseback ride? Not only will you get to enjoy the stunning scenery, but you’ll also be able to chat with your local guide and get tips for other romantic places to go in Oahu.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, there are plenty of trails to explore.

This private Oahu horseback riding tour includes a picnic lunch. It doesn’t get more romantic than that!

Attend an Oahu Luau

Oahu is well known for its nightlife and there are plenty of options for Oahu honeymoon activities. Booking tickets to a luau is one of the best Hawaiian nightlife options!

Not only will you get drinks and dinner, but a traditional Hawaiian show’ll also entertain you. Plus, honeymooners are asked to come up on stage at many luaus!

If you’re looking for the best Oahu luaus for honeymooners, Toa Luau up in North Shore Oahu and the Experience Nutridge Luau in Honolulu are great options. These are smaller and more intimate events, unlike the large, commercialized ones.

So if you want an authentic Hawaiian experience, book tickets to one of these Oahu luaus! You won’t regret it.

Soak up Some Sun at a Beach

Oahu is the perfect place to spend your honeymoon if you’re looking for beautiful beaches. You can easily spend an entire day of your honeymoon to Oahu just soaking in the sunshine and listening to the waves crash.

To make it extra romantic, bring a large beach towel for two, a beach umbrella, and enjoy a picnic with food from your favorite local restaurant. It’s also perfect for a Hawaii beach proposal (if you haven’t popped the question yet)!

Some of the prettiest beaches in Oahu include Lanikai Beach, Sunset Beach, and Waimanalo Bay Beach Park. And, of course, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen!

Oahu Honeymoon Activities FAQs

Absolutely! In fact, it’s one of the best islands in Hawaii for a honeymoon because there are so many activities, restaurants, and places to stay for honeymooners. You can stay in the hustle and bustle of Waikiki or retreat to a quieter part of the island like Turtle Bay or Ko Olina.

There are lots of romantic resorts in Oahu that are perfect for Hawaii honeymoons! In Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Surfjack Hotel are popular. There’s also Turtle Bay Resort in North Shore Oahu and the Four Seasons Ko Olina in Kapolei.

Ideally, you’ll have at least 5-7 days on Oahu for your honeymoon. That gives enough time to do a few adventures, see some attractions, try some amazing food, and have time to relax at the pool.
