Taking a U.S. National Parks Photo Tour  is the dream of any landscape photographer.

The United States has 59 national parks, several hundred state parks and ancestral Indian reservations that are no less impressive behind the viewfinder. It would take years to visit all these places where nature remains intact despite the action of man.

However, there are some National Parks which visit is essential if you are into landscape and nature photography.

yosemite national park us photo tour valley view

The US West Coast is the most spectacular area, and there, we can find canyons with impossible shapes, endless deserts, and valleys where new compositions arise with every step.

Throughout this article, we will help you plan a US National Park photo expedition on your own , and we will show you where to take the best photos of the West Coast.

tips to photograph the grand canyon national park

In addition, we will provide with many useful tips so you can get the most out of your camera and come back from your photo tour with real masterpieces.

American Photo Tours

These are some places that I recommend you to visit when taking a West Coast USA photography tour.

Yosemite Landscape Photography Workshops

Yosemite, in California, has always attracted indigenous tribes, artists, explorers, climbers and, of course, photographers. We spent more time in this NP than in any other during our West Coast US tour.

If you want your United States National Parks photography tour to include dreamy panoramic views, you can not leave Yosemite outside. However, Yosemite is more than vast landscapes and granite walls.

yosemite us national park photo expeditions

In Yosemite, we can photograph natural phenomena as spectacular as the Firefall or the Moonbow , but for this, we need to travel in February and June respectively.

Here we speak deeply about the best things to photograph and  to see in Yosemite National Park.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

The desert landscape of Death Valley is often ignored by the mass of visitors who cross every day from Las Vegas to Yosemite. However, from a photographic point of view, it is a true paradise. Here we can find the most massive dunes in North America and sedimentary mountains that will add a wondrous colors palette to your photos.

best spot to photography us national parks death valley

If you really want to get the most out of Death Valley, I recommend you photograph it at sunset and at dawn, otherwise, the hard sunlight in the morning will vanish all the colors of the landscape. Also, doing night photography among the high dunes is an otherworldly experience. The light pollution in Death Valley is null and we can enjoy photographing the Milky Way Core during the summer months.

Another option is to photograph Death Valley in spring, to see and shoot the extraordinary phenomenon the wildflowers covering the desert landscape. We speak further about this and other plans  to do in Death Valley   here.

ANTELOPE CANYON PHOTO TOURS

Although it is not a National Park, taking an Antelope Canyon photo tour is one of the best experiences you can have during an American photo expedition.

This canyon is located in northern Arizona, close to the border with Utah and within the Navajo Indian Reservation. It consists of two main sections: Lower Antelope, narrower and longer, and Upper Antelope Canyon, shorter and wider. The last is usually visited by most photographers as you have the option to do a dedicated photo tour.

antelope canyon photo tour

It is true that the Upper Antelope Canyon photo tours are expensive, that you can’t do them on your own, nor spend as long as you would like working on each composition, but I can tell they are completely worth it.

The best time to take an Antelope Canyon photo workshop is from June to August since the sun is perpendicular during the midday and we can see the light beams that made this Canyon famous.

tips to photography during you trip to the west coast america

You only need one day of your United States photography tour to discover this natural wonder, so I would not hesitate to combine it with other national parks located nearby.

If you are adding this stop to your West Coast America photo tour, do not miss our guide to visiting the Antelope Canyon where you will find all the info in addition to a free ebook with all the compositions, techniques and tips to photograph it.

Another place where we can take one of the best photos of the West Coast of the United States is Horseshoe Bend, just 10 minutes from Antelope Canyon. The best time to photograph the most famous bow of the Colorado River is during sunset. Make sure you arrive well before sunset as it is a very popular and crowded location.

how much cost a us national park photo tour horseshoe bend arizona

MONUMENT VALLEY PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR

Like the previous one, Monument Valley is not a national park, but it is located within the Navajo Indian Reservation, in Arizona, three hours away from the Antelope Canyon.

However, it is one of the most photographed places in the American West and I highly recommend your visit during a United States photo tour.

usa national parks photography tours monument valley

Although Monument Valley can be visited on your own, certain excursions require hiring a Navajo guide and a 4×4 car. One of the most interesting is the Hunt Mesa overnight photo tour. During this tour, we will have a night photography session, where we will learn how to photograph the Milky Way and the next morning we will shoot one of the most beautiful scenes of the valley at dawn.

Whether you decide to hire a photography tour, or if you want to visit it on your own, you cannot miss this valley during your US West Coast photo trip. You can check the best viewpoints of Monument Valley here.

GRAND CANYON PHOTO TOURS

The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, is one of the biggest photographic challenges you can face during a US Western Parks photo tour.

The official viewpoints are not the most photogenic points in the national park. This, added to the huge amount of tourists that flock in the key lookouts at sunrise and sunset, makes it difficult to capture the real scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon.

best viewpoints in the grand canyon photo tour western us

Also, more than anywhere else on the West Coast, harsh light conditions (such as clear and flat skies) will make the Grand Canyon lose its magic.

To capture with your camera all the details of the Grand Canyon I recommend you to hire an airplane tour. The photos you can get from the heights exceed in originality and detail to anyone you can take from the best viewpoint.

western usa airplane tour grand canyon aerial photography

Even so, try to be the first to arrive during sunrise and sunset at the viewpoints that we cover in this guide of things to do in the Grand Canyon.

VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK PHOTO TRIPS

A stopover to photograph the red rocks of the Valley of Fire should be mandatory if we are traveling through Sin City, since it is one of the best things to do near Las Vegas.

This state park is located just 1 hour from the “Sin City”, in Nevada, and offers a few unique compositions. Like the Grand Canyon, sunset and sunrise are the best times to photograph it.

ZION NATIONAL PARK PHOTO WORKSHOPS

If you plan your trip well in advance, I recommend you to include Zion National Park, located in Utah, to your itinerary. You will need a special permit to photograph The Subway, which is, from my point of view, the most photogenic place in this national park. However, to make the route that takes you to this area, you must get a permit. Here you will find more details about this and other things to do in Zion National Park.

photo tour to us national park zion

BRYCE NATIONAL PARK PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP

Bryce Canyon, also in Utah, is one of the most surreal landscapes that we can cross during our US National Parks photo tour.

The rock formations also known as Hoodoos will invite us to try and play with all our lenses.

where to take the best pictures in the us national parks photo tour bryce canyon

One day is enough to photograph the most outstanding viewpoints and hike an easy trail where we can capture the details from a closer perspective. If you decide to include Bryce in your West Coast photo tour, do not miss all you can do in Bryce Canyon.

ARCHES NP PHOTO TOURS

Located in Utah, Arches National Park is the favorite spot for most photographers. Who does not want to create a composition using one of their hundreds of rock arches in the frame? If you’re going to photograph this national park, I recommend that you spend at least two days, since, in addition to the infinite photography possibilities, the most impressive images are often captured during summer nights, when the Milky Way crosses some of the arches.

Also, it will be necessary to pay particular attention to the hours when you are planning your visit since finding the arches in backlight will make getting quality photographs more complicated.

CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK PHOTO WORKSHOPS

Near Arches National Park we find another national park that we will like to include during our Western United States photography trip. It is Canyonlands NP, where, as its name suggests, we find infinite canyons carved into the ground.

As with the Grand Canyon, the best time to visit Canyonlands is at sunrise and sunset. Another nearby place we can visit is Dead Horse Point, where we can photograph another meander of the Colorado River, something less striking than the Horseshoe bend mentioned above, but also recommended.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK PHOTO TOUR

In Wyoming, we can find the historic  Yellowstone National Park , another must for landscape photographers and also, in this case, for wildlife photographers.

In this national park, we can photograph a wide range of landscapes: geysers showing the geothermal activity of the terrain, hot springs full of colorful bacteria and large snowy peaks.

If you are mainly interested in making a wildlife-oriented photography trip, I do not recommend visiting Yellowstone NP during the summer, since the massive number of tourists that visit the park during this time scare the wildlife away to more remote areas: Grizzly bears, black bears, buffalos, moose, wolves, coyotes, foxes …

You can check here the best things to do in Yellowstone National Park.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK PHOTO TOUR

Linked to Yellowstone to the south, it is located the Grand Teton National Park where the Rocky Mountains cross from the United States to Canada.

The landscape is quite similar to those of Yellowstone, with a high mountain range always in the background. The wildlife moves from one park to another through greenways, and so do visitors who usually visit both parks on the same trip.

The photographs that we can expect in this park are usually mountainous landscapes and the best time to visit it is during the spring and the fall during the leave peeping season.

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK PHOTO WORKSHOPS

One of the most impressive national parks that we could include in our American photography is the Olympic NP, located in Washington. This park usually stands out for its lush and humid forest of natural beauty where we can find remote virgin beaches with sea stacks and distant glacial peaks.

Frequently, during an Olympic National Park Photo Tour, it is very common to also include Mt. Rainier National Park, only two and a half hours away. In this National Park, we can photograph during the spring a stunning subalpine meadow covered with wildflowers.

US WESTERN NATIONAL PARKS PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS

All the places mentioned above deserve to be included in any US National Parks Photo Tour. However, distances in this country are large and we can not visit all the mentioned locations in less than two-three months.

Most photographers focus on covering only one area. For example:

  • Olympic + Mt. Rainer in 10 days
  • Yellowstone + Grand Teton in 10 days
  • Arches + Canyonlands in 7 days
  • Zion + Bryce + Antelope Canyon + Monument Valley + Grand Canyon + Death Valley + Yosemite in 10 days ( you can see a route like the one we took in our 10-day West Coast road trip )
  • Arches + Canyonlands + Zion + Bryce + Antelope Canyon + Monument Valley + Grand Canyon in 15 days
  • Arches + Canyonlands + Zion + Bryce + Antelope Canyon + Monument Valley + Great Canyon + Death Valley + Yosemite in 20 days

We give you an example of an itinerary for a 15-day West America photo tour and another of 20 days.

15-DAY US NATIONAL PARKS PHOTO TOUR ITINERARY

This possible 15-day US photography tour itinerary focuses on the most representative National and State Parks in Utah and Arizona.

Day 1: Arrival in Las Vegas

Day 2: Valley of Fire State Park

Day 3: Zion Canyon National Park

Day 4: Bryce Canyon National Park

Day 5: Capitol Reef National Park

Day 6: Goblin Valley State Park

Day 7: Canyonlands National Park

Day 8: Dead Horse Point State Park + Arches National Park

Day 9: Arches National Park

Day 10: Arches National Park + Monument Valley

Day 11: Monument Valley

Day 12: Monument Valley + Horseshoe Bend

Day 13: Antelope Canyon + Gran Cañón

Day 14: Gran Cañón

Day 15: Las Vegas

20-DAY US NATIONAL PARKS PHOTO WORKSHOP ITINERARY

In the case that we can make a 20-day photography tour, we would follow the previous itinerary and then we would add the following 5 days:

Day 16: Mojave National Preserve

Day 17: Death Valley National Park

Day 18: Yosemite National Park

Day 19: Yosemite National Park

Day 20: San Francisco

PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR NEEDED AT THE US NATIONAL PARKS

We already wrote an article about the best photography equipment for traveling.

In this section, we will talk specifically about the photography gear to travel to the US National Parks.

DSLR OR MIRRORLESS CAMERA

The best option is always to use a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses since, with a phone camera or a compact camera, it will be difficult to capture all the beauty hidden in the national parks.

Most of the scenarios that we are going to shoot are extremely wide landscapes, such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley or Death Valley, so we will require, not a wide, but an ultra wide-angle lens. Also, if we are doing night photography, the lens should be very bright (we recommend using lenses with apertures (f) wider than 4.

A telephoto lens will also be very useful for photographing wildlife, for example, if we travel to Yellowstone or to photograph details of vast landscapes.

To see deeper about the specific lenses that we recommend do not miss this section in our article dedicated to  travel photography equipment.

A reliable  tripod is essential, not only to capture sharper images and to increase exposure times. On some tours, a tripod is mandatory, as in the Upper Antelope Canyon photo tour.

In addition, we should carry a tripod as sturdy and light as possible so we can take it during our hikes when necessary. A leveling base/L shape plate will be very helpful when photographing panoramas composed by different shots.

You can see our recommendations here.

As we already broke down in our guide on lens filters,  the use of filters is a must if we want to take our photographs one step further. And for such a trip, I would not hesitate to carry at least one 6-stop ND filter and a 10-stop ND filter. We always use the Lucroit filters, as they offer the lens photography filters that best suit our needs as we explain in the above article.

We also collaborate with them, offering a 10% discount when buying through this link.

10 TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING THE US WEST COAST

These are some tips that we hope you find useful during your US National Parks Photo Tours:

1. Shoot in RAW. This is applicable for any photography tour. Raw files gather more information than any other file such as Jpegs; fundamental to make the most of our images when we edit and process them once we return from our trip.

2. Travel at the best time. Research in advance what is the best time to visit each of the places you want to photograph. For example, when you can see the Yosemite Firefall, spot more wildlife in Yellowstone or capture the light beams in Antelope Canyon.

3. Do not fall asleep. Almost all the National Parks have very little light pollution. If you have the possibility to choose the dates in which you travel, do it during the  New Moon and take the opportunity to photograph the Milky Way.

4. Be the first one. If you travel in high season, try to arrive well in advance  to the main viewpoints and best locations before sunrise and sunset.

5. Use all your lenses. You will find interesting using all your lenses with different focal distances in most of the US National Parks. It may be convenient to shoot both with a wide angle to capture the whole scene but don’t forget to use the telephoto lens to focus on details from the same viewpoint.

6. Use filters.  The light is usually very tricky in some of the areas of the American West, so do not forget to use lens filters.   They will be handy while shooting waterfalls, fast-moving clouds, etc.

7. Take panoramic shots. In numerous parks such as the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon or Yosemite, the use of panoramas is essential. The landscapes are incredibly wide and with a single shot, sometimes it is difficult to capture all the scene.

8. Go photographing even if the weather is bad.  Sometimes the most original scenes and moments do not always take place during the most comfortable moments for visitors. Storms can change the whole scene and it can be the best time to take unrepeatable photos.

9. Plan the shots. If you do not use it yet, I recommend that you start using Photopills to plan shots with the moon, the sun or the Milky Way.

10. Be creative. The typical postcard photo is everywhere on the internet. If you really want to take photos that thrill and drag the viewer’s attention, try to  show your own vision  of the different popular locations.

The best Western U.S. photo locations

These are the 10 places to take the best pictures in the US West Coast:

  • Delicate Arch crossed by the Milky Way – Arches National Park
  • Mesquite Sand Dunes at sunrise – Death Valley National Park
  • Grand Canyon during an airplane tour – Grand Canyon National Park
  • Horseshoe Bend at sunset – Page
  • Light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon – Page
  • Sunrise from Hunt Mesa – Monument Valley
  • Taft Point at sunset – Yosemite National Park
  • The Subway – Zion Canyon National Park
  • Sunrise Point at dawn – Bryce Canyon National Park
  • Grand Prismatic Spring – Yellowstone National Park

We haven’t visited all these places yet, but we hope to photograph them very soon.

To show you some of the places described above, you can find some of the pictures I took during my US National Parks photography tour in our   West Coast gallery here. I hope my photos inspire you and help you plan your next photo tour to the American West.

CAPTURE THE ATLAS PHOTO TOURS

We plan photo tours for small groups in Capture the Atlas. Getting the license to operate in the United States, although we live here, is somewhat difficult, so we can not provide with dates for the upcoming group tours yet.

However, if you are going to travel to the West Coast (or to the East, since we live in Philadelphia) and you want us to be your photo guides, do not hesitate to contact us.

Fantastic article and pictures. We have hit Canyonlands, Arches,Horseshoe, Lower Antelope Canyon & Grand Canyon, so far. Note that Photo tours are no longer allowed in Upper Antelope. Another GREAT area for photography are the Red Rocks of Sedona. Happy shooting.

' src=

That’s a great tour! We couldn’t visit Canyonlands and Arches but hope we can do it on our next trip to the West! Didn’t hear about the Red Rocks of Sedona but will definitely check it out, thanks for the tip! 😉

Happy shooting!

The trip was a ’10’ in every way. Your guides were the best in every way. Had a lot of attention, everyone was very helpful along the way. Your arrangements were excellent and I will do othe trips with Strabo again.

— D. Martell

Trip was a 10! I think the Sahara was the best. Loved sleeping in berber tents. The photography was gorgeous and many wonderful photo opportunities. Ron always knew where to be when for best photographs. I’ve known him since 1982 when I went to Ireland, and I always wanted to do his Morocco trip after seeing photos and notices on Facebook from him. His energy, enthusiasm and humor was contagious. I liked his photo talks every so often as he wanted us all to see different things and find our own vision. He showed us examples of his work and other photographers that influenced him. Always informative of our daily activities and culture of Morocco. I loved the variety of hotels and lodges.

— A Converse

What a wonderful Ireland trip we had. Thanks for everything you did to make it possible and so enjoyable. Given how much fun we had and how delighted we were with the trip, we have just one suggestion to add more leisure time in villages. It and all the guides were 10 out of 10. Everyone was a wonderful help. The relationships we forged, particularly with Karen & Joel was the highlight.

— C Potyen

It is tough to pick just one highlight of the tour. Each segment of the trip was fantastic. Florence – early morning photography, walking tours of the city, and the excellent food Tuscany – amazing landscapes, towns and wine tasting Venice – it exceeded everything I had heard

Ron is a 10 plus!!! Your local guide and hotels all 10’s. Loved the trip and now have some great photo memories to view and share with family. We are thinking about Scotland for next year.

Log leading into a still reflective lake with jagged mountain peaks and forest trees in the background during soft glowing sunset.

I envisioned that I would capture many new and breathtaking landscapes—which I did!  However, what I wasn’t expecting, and what I didn’t really experience in other workshops was Dan’s philosophy of photography. I left Dan’s workshop as a more aware and calculated photographer.  Dan has an unmistakable passion for photography, and he challenges his students with his philosophy to help them grow in their photographic journey.   — Greg Liengswangwong

Dan Ballard has a keen eye for great landscape photography and experience in capturing it, HOWEVER, it is his determination to share his in-depth knowledge and teach it to others that was the highlight of the weekend. He was very patient with each student and took interest in each individual’s needs and level of experience. I gained tremendous increased knowledge in my landscape shooting as well as image processing in Lightroom. This is a serious workshop for serious landscape photographers of any level.  –Stan Crane

10+ years of experience teaching

While photography is my first passion, teaching is a close second. Over the past years I’ve worked with hundreds of photographers across the globe — from beginner hobbyists to emerging pros who are striving to make it to the next level. I am fluent working with Nikon, Sony and Canon gear. These workshops are for anyone and everyone who wants to improve their photography skills!

Individualized, detailed instruction

I run my workshops the same way that I shoot personally. We will journey away from taking iconic images to discover new and interesting compositions. My goal is to guide you in creating original images while helping you see the final printed image in your "mind's eye" before you push the button.

I’ve been told by many students that my workshops are unique in the sense that I always stay with the group providing one-on-one instruction and critique. When I am shooting, it is with the aim of sharing ideas and thoughts as the light changes. You will learn about my entire process for creating powerful and dramatic images starting with where to shoot and why. We will dig into how to master composition, understand light as well as image processing in Lightroom.

How to learn landscape photography

It’s a long road to learning landscape photography, and to make the most of one of our photo tours you might want to get a little experience under your belt beforehand. The great thing is, as long as you have a camera you can start practicing pretty much anywhere.

So, for those of you eager to get ahead, here’s our top tips on how to learn landscape photography:

  • Start with the basics: Learn the fundamental principles of photography such as exposure, composition, and lighting. You can find plenty of free resources online to help you get to grips with the basics. These principles apply to all types of photography, including landscape photography.
  • Study the work of other photographers: The best way to learn landscape photography is by studying the greats. Look at the work of photographers who specialize in landscape photography. Find photographers whose work you love, analyze their photos, and try to understand what makes their images work.
  • Pay attention to the light: The quality and direction of light can have a significant impact on your landscape photography. Pay attention to the time of day, weather conditions, and how the light interacts with the landscape.
  • Experiment with different lenses: Wide-angle lenses are commonly used in landscape photography, but don’t be afraid to experiment with other lenses to achieve different effects.
  • Practice, practice, practice: All the best landscape photography workshops offer this advice. The more you practice, the better you will become. Take your camera out and shoot as often as possible and experiment with different settings and compositions.

Landscape photography tips by Emil von Maltitz

If you want to learn landscape photography at an advanced level, check out some tips by award-winning South African landscape photographer Emil von Maltitz:

Learn to read the weather

“The good news is that modern technology makes this a relatively straightforward task. I personally use windy.com and YR as apps on my cell phone and scrutinize both of them before planning shoots during travel. As a landscape photographer you are looking for drama in the sky as opposed to clear skies, which can be a bit dull and boring. So shifting fronts and scattered cloud are tell-tale signs of decent photography.

It’s also great to work out whether it’s worth heading out, or if it’s going to be a completely rained out bust. Another excellent resource in this regard is www.mountain-forecast.com which gives weather at various altitudes around well-known peaks in numerous countries. Great for mountain photography.”

Use apps intelligently

“Apart from weather apps, there are two apps that I find absolutely invaluable for planning a landscape shoot. The first is The Photographer’s Ephemeris (TPE for short), which gives me accurate pre-visualisation of where the sun is going to be, where shadows fall, when the golden hour or blue hour starts, where constellations sit in the sky along with the galactic core of the Milky Way and much. Photo Pills is another highly regarded app that does the same (the only reason I use TPE instead of Photo Pills is simply that I had it already when PhotoPills was launched).

The second app that is invaluable to my landscape location planning is Gaia GPS. This is a subscription app that gives extraordinarily detailed contour maps and GPS plotting on a phone. It has gotten me out of trouble (when you are lost) dozens of times. The awesome thing about the app is that if you plan ahead and search the area you are traveling in, the maps will download to your phone and your location will then use the phone’s GPS signal instead of cell signal. So you get pin-point accuracy even when there is no cell-signal!”

Always pack a microfiber towel

“I buy the Sea-To-Summit extra large microfiber towels and usually have two of them with me. These are great for cleaning lenses (soft enough not to scratch the glass), but are also absorbent and big enough to clean and dry kit that has gotten drenched in the rain or when that rogue wave slams into you on the shoreline.”

Carry a DC charger (USB port) for your camera batteries

“Some of the modern cameras allow battery charging internally, but it’s still a good idea to bring a charger that allows you to plug into a battery power-bank via USB or USB-C. I have often ended up in places where there is no AC power. In these instances you either end up charging in a vehicle or through a power-bank.

Hahnel, Rav, Belkin and various other third party battery manufacturers offer these charging solutions. Look for one that works with your camera and make sure to add it to your packing list.“

Never leave home without a tripod

“This goes without saying, but it is extraordinary how many photographers use ridiculously light and flimsy tripods on landscape photography workshops. Make sure you have a sturdy enough tripod to handle the kind of photography you are wanting to do. If you plan on standing in the waves to photograph the shoreline with long shutter speeds, then a super-light travel tripod potentially endangers your gear getting knocked over into the water (or camera-shake at the very least).

That said, any tripod is better than no tripod at all. Still, check with the workshop leader if any doubt about what tripod to bring (sometimes a super lightweight travel tripod is the right choice).”

Wear good walking shoes!

“You’re going to spend a lot of time on your feet. Make sure you have a good pair of shoes.”

The best way to learn landscape photography

At the end of the day, whatever your method, learning landscape photography will require patience, perseverance, and practice. The best way to learn landscape photography is to learn what works for you and stick with it! Doing what you enjoy will help you stay consistent. Moreover, you know what you like and following your own intuition will help you to carve out your own style.

That being said, professional help and expert guidance from the best landscape photography workshops can help you discover new styles and techniques. Of course visiting natural wonders and jaw-dropping settings will also help you discover your creative spark!

If you’re really keen to learn landscape photography, you should investigate the best landscape photography workshops for the kind of photos you want to produce, and take the leap. Not only will you return home having learnt from a bounty of landscape photography lessons, you’ll have a portfolio of indescribable photos to remember them by.

The Importance of RAW Files for Landscape Photography

When it comes to capturing stunning landscape photographs, photographers often rely on RAW files for their flexibility and ability to preserve the most amount of data. RAW files provide photographers with the utmost control and creative freedom during post-processing, allowing them to bring out the true beauty of the landscape in their final images. Let’s explore why RAW files are essential for landscape photography.

Retaining More Data and Detail

  • RAW files contain uncompressed data straight from the camera’s sensor, capturing every nuance of the landscape scene. This means more significant bit depth and a wider range of colors and tones, preserving intricate details that may be lost in other file formats like JPEGs.
  • With RAW files, photographers have access to the complete tonal range, including shadows, highlights, and mid-tones. This allows for better control over the exposure and dynamic range, resulting in images that accurately represent the scene’s lighting conditions.
  • RAW files also retain more information for post-processing adjustments, such as white balance, contrast, and saturation. Photographers can tweak these settings without worrying about loss of detail or introducing artifacts, ensuring a true-to-life representation of the landscape.

Enhanced Flexibility in Post-Processing

  • RAW files give photographers the flexibility to make non-destructive edits during post-processing. This means that any adjustments made to the image can be undone or modified without affecting the original data. It’s like having a digital darkroom where you can experiment and fine-tune your images to perfection.
  • White balance is a crucial aspect of landscape photography, as it affects the overall mood and color temperature of the image. With RAW files, photographers can easily adjust the white balance without compromising image quality, allowing them to achieve the desired look and feel.
  • Post-processing software provides a plethora of tools and techniques to enhance landscape images, including sharpening, noise reduction, and local adjustments. RAW files offer the necessary data and flexibility to apply these edits selectively, ensuring optimal results without sacrificing image quality.

Preserving Image Quality

  • Unlike JPEG files, which are compressed and have a lossy nature, RAW files retain the highest level of image quality. Without any compression artifacts or information loss, photographers can produce high-resolution prints or large-scale displays with exceptional detail and clarity.
  • The ability to recover highlights and shadow details is crucial in landscape photography, where scenes often feature a wide dynamic range. RAW files excel in this aspect, allowing photographers to salvage blown-out highlights or lift shadows without compromising the overall image quality.
  • Landscape photography often involves challenging lighting conditions, such as sunrise or sunset, where the color and intensity of the light change dramatically. RAW files capture this information accurately, giving photographers the flexibility to fine-tune the color and exposure in post-processing to match their vision.

In conclusion, RAW files are an indispensable asset for landscape photographers, empowering them with unparalleled creative control and flexibility during post-processing. With their ability to retain more data, provide enhanced flexibility, and preserve image quality, RAW files play a crucial role in helping photographers capture and showcase the beauty of the natural world.

Additional Information: RAW files provide more data and flexibility for post-processing landscape photographs.

Improving Skills and Showcasing Creativity

Photography tours are a fantastic opportunity for photographers to not only explore new destinations but also to improve their skills and showcase their creativity. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, these tours offer a wealth of learning experiences and a chance to discover new techniques to enhance your photography. So, why should you consider going on a photography tour to improve your skills and showcase your creativity? Let’s dive in.

1. Learn from Experts:

One of the biggest advantages of joining a photography tour is the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. Tour leaders are often seasoned photographers themselves, and they are there to share their expertise and guide you along the way. From technical aspects like composition and lighting to artistic approaches and editing techniques, you’ll gain insights and knowledge that can significantly elevate your photography skills.

2. Explore New Destinations:

Photography tours are usually designed with the intention of visiting stunning locations that offer ample opportunities for capturing breathtaking images. Whether it’s the rugged landscapes of Iceland, the vibrant streets of Marrakech, or the majestic wildlife of Africa, these tours allow you to immerse yourself in different cultures and environments. The diversity of subjects and settings will challenge you to think creatively and expand your photographic repertoire.

3. Connect with Like-Minded Individuals:

Joining a photography tour provides a unique opportunity to connect with other passionate photographers who share your love for the craft. Interacting and networking with fellow enthusiasts can be incredibly inspiring and can lead to lifelong friendships and collaborations. You’ll have the chance to exchange ideas, share techniques, and learn from each other’s experiences, fostering a supportive community that encourages growth and creativity.

4. Access Exclusive Locations and Timing:

Photography tours often grant access to exclusive locations and offer optimal timing for capturing special moments. Whether it’s gaining permission to shoot in restricted areas or having the advantage of shooting during golden hour or blue hour, you’ll have the opportunity to capture images that might be otherwise inaccessible or challenging on your own. These unique opportunities can result in distinctive and memorable photographs that showcase your creativity.

5. Dedicated Time for Practice:

In our busy lives, finding uninterrupted time for photography can be a challenge. Photography tours provide a dedicated period solely focused on capturing images, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the process. With ample time for practice, experimentation, and reflection, you can refine your skills, try out new techniques, and push the boundaries of your creativity.

In summary, photography tours offer an excellent platform for improving your skills and showcasing your creativity. Learning from experts, exploring new destinations, connecting with like-minded individuals, accessing exclusive locations, and having dedicated time for practice all contribute to a transformative experience. So, consider embarking on a photography tour to take your skills to new heights and capture extraordinary images that truly reflect your creative vision.

Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the beautiful countryside views of Val d’Orcia . Once we arrive in Pienza, a small idyllic town, we’ll check into our hotel and take a moment to relax and settle in. This midday break will allow you to recharge and prepare for the exciting adventures ahead.

As the sun starts to descend, we’ll go to the enchanting Cipressi di San Quirico d’Orcia , a location renowned for its photogenic charm. With the rolling hills bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun, you’ll have the opportunity to capture stunning compositions featuring lonely cypress trees, picturesque countryside roads, and breathtaking landscapes illuminated by the last light of the day. This sunset shoot promises to be a memorable experience that showcases the beauty of Tuscany’s natural scenery.

After the sunset shoot, we’ll gather for a dinner.

Our second day starts early. We’ll begin our second shooting session with an unforgettable sunrise session at the iconic Podere Belvedere , one of the most famous villas in the entire region. Arriving before dawn, we’ll witness the magical transformation of the landscape as the sun’s rays gradually illuminate the surroundings. Our main subject will be a photogenic villa set against the backdrop of the picturesque valley. However, you’ll also have the opportunity to capture various other subjects in the area. This sunrise shoot promises to offer breathtaking views and an incredible start to the day.

After our early morning session, we’ll return to the hotel for a well-deserved breakfast. You’ll have a chance to refuel and recharge before we embark on the next part of our day. Take this time to relax and rejuvenate, or if you’re feeling energized, feel free to explore the charming town of Pienza , which is conveniently located just a short walk away. Immerse yourself in its beauty and capture the essence of this lovely Tuscan gem.

Later in the morning, we’ll explore another hilltop town of Montepulciano and wander around its alleys with our cameras. Following a delicious lunch in Montepulciano, we’ll return to Pienza for some free time and editing. You’ll have the opportunity to work on your photographs from the previous sessions with guidance and support from our team.

For the sunset shoot, we’ll visit the world-famous Podere Baccoleno , a place everyone loves. With its winding road adorned by cypress trees leading to a captivating house in the distance, this location offers classic and timeless photographic opportunities. Prepare to capture the beauty of the Tuscan landscape as the sun sets, casting a warm glow on the surroundings.

Day 3 starts with an early sunrise session at Poggio Covili , a stunning country house adorned with a captivating straight line of cypress trees. From various perspectives and points of view, you’ll have the opportunity to capture incredible compositions of this picturesque location. As the sun rises, the soft light will accentuate the beauty of the surroundings, allowing you to create memorable photographs.

After returning to the hotel, we’ll gather for a delicious breakfast to fuel up for the day. Following breakfast, you’ll have some free time to relax and unwind. You can stroll through the charming town center of Pienza , steps away from our hotel. Immerse yourself in the delightful atmosphere, explore the quaint streets, and discover hidden photographic gems.

Our afternoon begins with a visit to Castello Banfi , one of the world’s finest wineries. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to capture photographs of the picturesque landscape. You’ll enjoy a tour of the facilities at the winery, witnessing the winemaking process firsthand. The experience culminates in a delightful wine-tasting session and a satisfying lunch. Indulge your taste buds and capture the essence of the winery’s charm through your lens.

Following our return to Pienza, we’ll have some free time for editing and refining our images from the previous sessions.

At this late afternoon shooting session, we’ll visit the famous “ Villa Gladiatore ,” one of the locations where the popular film was shot. Prepare to be transported back in time as you capture the atmosphere and grandeur of this historical setting from various perspectives. Remember that reaching the location involves a pleasant 10-minute walk, with a slight downhill and uphill stretch.

Day 4 begins with another early wake-up call for a picturesque sunrise session. We will greet the sun at the lovely Vitaleta Chapel . From our carefully chosen vantage point, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the first rays of the day at the iconic view of the chapel, surrounded by the serene countryside. In addition to the chapel, you’ll find other captivating subjects such as solitary trees, isolated country houses on the hills, and the unique features typical of the area. This sunrise shoot promises to offer a variety of compositions and the chance to capture the essence of the Tuscan landscape in the early morning light.

After returning to the hotel, we’ll gather for a delicious breakfast, replenishing our energy for the day’s activities. Following breakfast, take some time to relax and unwind at the hotel. If you’re feeling up to it, venture out and explore the picturesque streets of Pienza , immersing yourself in the beauty of this charming town.

Our morning takes us to the capital of the region, Siena . Known for its stunning architecture and buildings, this bustling city offers many photographic opportunities. From the magnificent cathedral to the captivating streets, you’ll have ample chances to capture the essence of Siena’s charm. After exploring and photographing the city, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch before returning to Pienza.

Once we return to Pienza, you’ll have some free time to relax, edit your images, or explore the town at your own pace.

In the late afternoon, we’ll embark on a slightly longer drive to our sunset shooting location and visit the tufa rock town of Pitigliano . This village, situated on a hill and primarily built on tuff, offers a unique and distinctive atmosphere. As twilight approaches, the city lights come alive, creating a mesmerizing spectacle during the blue hour. Capture the beauty of Pitigliano, with its enchanting architecture and the warm glow of the evening sky, in a memorable sunset session.

On our final full day, we’ll embark on one last sunrise adventure in the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany. Depending on the weather conditions, we may return to one of the previously visited locations to capture the landscapes under different lighting and atmospheric conditions. Alternatively, we may explore and capture new locations that offer unique perspectives and photographic opportunities. Regardless of the chosen location, this sunrise shoot promises to be a memorable and fitting finale to our tour, allowing you to capture the essence of Tuscany’s natural beauty.

After returning to the hotel, we’ll gather for a delicious breakfast, savoring the flavors and fueling up for the day. Following breakfast, you’ll have some free time to relax and unwind. Take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve experienced, or explore the hotel’s surrounding areas and capture any final shots that inspire you.

We’ll pack our bags and leave for our drive to Florence , the magnificent city that serves as the perfect conclusion to our tour. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch in Florence, savoring the delectable cuisine of the region.

Afterward, we’ll check into our rooms, giving you time to relax and prepare for the evening’s photography session.

For our final session, we’ll head to the iconic Piazzale Michelangelo , a square that offers a panoramic view of Florence, including the majestic Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. From this vantage point, you’ll have the opportunity to capture the beauty of Florence as the sun sets, casting a warm glow over the city. This sunset session at Piazzale Michelangelo promises to be a truly memorable experience and the perfect conclusion to our photography tour.

We’ll wrap the tour up after breakfast, and those who want to extend their stay can join the connecting Pisa & Cinque Terre photo tour . We will take you to Florence Airport and drop you off at 9:30 AM.

As with photography workshops, the itinerary is subject to change depending on the weather.

Post-processing Sessions in Adobe Lightroom

We will also run post-processing sessions in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC to provide another benefit from this photo tour. We will work on your pictures and show you how to unlock their full potential.

Jan will take you on a journey from unattractive and flat photos to vibrant, appealing, professional-looking pictures that will sell well.

In a short time, you’ll understand why editing your photos is important and how to do it efficiently.

For post-processing sessions, we’ll use the time for rest and do it in small groups of two participants.

Upon request, we can also discuss various topics such as digital asset management, backup workflow, or anything else that interests you.

Essential Information

You will fly to Florence Airport (FLR). We will give you the recommended arrival and departure times, so you can benefit from us picking you up and dropping you off directly at the airport.

We will use a combination of a comfortable 9-seater van and an estate personal vehicle, both allowing for ample space and your comfort during the tour. Both tour leaders will drive the vehicles.

We will stay at two accommodations – one in a nice 4-star hotel in Pienza for four nights and the final night in Florence in a 4-star hotel. We carefully choose the hotels so they feature cozy, spacious rooms, and offer a fantastic experience, so you feel comfortable and can get good rest.

Compared to other tours, we opt to stay in a city, so in your free time, you can walk around and explore instead of staying at a villa in the countryside where you need a car to get around.

We will have breakfasts after our sunrise shoots back at the hotels; they are included. After breakfast, there will be enough time to enjoy your rich Italian coffee and rest.

Our lunches will take place during our daytime outings, and we’ll choose restaurants where you can experience delicious Italian cuisine and savor every bite.

We’ll have dinners after the sunset shoots at about 7:30 PM. After dinners, you can enjoy reenergizing sleep before the sunrise photographic adventure.

The terrain will vary from gentle slopes to hilltop locations, providing diverse perspectives for photography. While some locations may require a short walk or hike, they are generally accessible to participants with moderate physical fitness. It’s important to note that certain spots may involve uphill or downhill stretches, which could require a moderate level of stamina. Participants can anticipate a manageable physical difficulty level, with ample time for rest and relaxation between photography sessions.

You can also take our self-assessment quiz that indicates whether our photo tours are a good fit for you. Get your personalized report now .

Intermediate photography experience is recommended. We expect you to know the basics of exposure and composition and be comfortable handling your camera. Terms like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, bracketing, or self-timer should be in your vocabulary because that’s what we’ll work with every time. If you need to become more familiar with these terms or are unsure if this tour suits you, don’t hesitate to contact Jan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can non-photographers join as well.

Yes, non-photographers are also welcome. The tour price for non-photographers is the same as for photographers.

Can you explain the difference between a photo tour and workshop?

A photo tour usually refers to a trip where leaders bring participants to the usual shooting locations and let them be without much help. In a workshop, leaders work more closely with participants and actively help them to take stunning images. Even though this event is called a photo tour, in its nature, it’s more of a workshop. Your leaders will work with you and help you craft good images, but they will also shoot themselves.

What happens in case of bad weather?

We’ll check the weather and optimize the program for the best shooting conditions. A knowledgeable local photography guide knows the area well and will help us find the right place to shoot if the weather turns bad.

Are our photo tours a good fit for you?

Take our self-assessment quiz to find out. After answering mostly Yes/No questions that cover areas such as photography, fitness, and comfort levels, you will receive a personalized report showing whether our tours are suitable for you.

Photo Guide Service

Guiding serious photographers is one of our specialties. We have worked with many professional photographers and know the changing light of Monument Valley like no one else. A custom guided photographic tour with our photo guides is the best way to realize the full photographic potential of this spectacular and legendary landscape.

For sunrise photos of the Totem Pole, we leave the Visitor Center an hour before sunrise. After sunrise, we then move on to one of three sand dune locations, and depending on available time we might visit two arches. Of course, 4 hours is not enough to exhaust the photographic possibilities of Monument Valley, but this is our shortest tour.

For an all-day photo experience, Our photo guides will take you out 4 hours in the morning and again for 4 hours in the evening. This leaves time in the middle of the day for lunch, napping or sightseeing. For the morning and evening, sunrise-sunset tour, $250 per person.

Custom Group Tours

We enjoy creating custom tours for groups of all sizes. We have also organized very successful workshops for photo groups. Tour operators and organizers should contact us directly with your needs.

Things to Remember

  • - We operate on daylight savings time. Utah time, not Arizona time.
  • - We start all of our tours from the Visitor's Center in Monument Valley.
  • - We have no set time for our tours. You get to set the time for your tour.
  • - Highway 163 runs north and south through Monument Valley. 1/4 mile north of Arizona, Utah state line there is an intersection. Turn East. Go 4 miles and you are at the Visitor's Center. There is a $5.00 per person Entrance Fee. This is a Navajo Tribal park, not a National Park. In the parking lot there is an information booth. At the booth ask for Carlos Phillips, Carl Phillips or Ray Begay. We work together.

To Book Your Tour

The easiest way to book your tour of Monument Valley is to call us - at 928 429-0665 or 928 429-0040. We delight in tailoring your Monument Valley tour to your particular interests and needs. In a sense, every Phillips' Photography Tours is a custom tour.

If you would like to arrange a special photo tour, or multi-day tour, or a tour for a large group, it is always a good idea to contact us well in advance. Monument Valley is still a rugged, rural location, almost a wilderness, with only sketchy phone service, and reliable email. So please call us at.

The cellular phone service has good days and bad days, so you might have to call more than once. However, our voice mail system is very dependable, so you can leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible. You can always write us (at the address below) or use our contact form and we will get back in touch with you.
