Madonna’s Tour Starts, Costumes Don’t Disappoint
Muscle-y! Photo: Getty Images
And she’s off! Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet” tour began Saturday night in Cardiff, Wales, and the Daily Mail reports the stadium was “far from full” (really?!) but Madge’s routines were “nothing short of breathtaking.” She underwent eight costume changes, playing a “pole-dancing, break-dancing cheerleader” and a “gypsy singer with a traveling band of minstrels.” Her custom-made threads were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier , Miu Miu , Givenchy , Stella McCartney , Yves Saint Laurent , Moschino , and more.
She’s been getting a lot of criticism for not being able to find a look for her current album, both on and off stage. We’re not sure we’d call the “Sticky and Sweet” costumes cohesive (though they all exquisitely displayed Madonna’s outrageous 50-year-old muscles), but they were characteristically surprising in that “is she really going to sit with her legs open while wearing that” kind of way. And what could be more fun on a Monday morning than taking a judgmental look at some of them? At left Madge rocks a progression of the leotard. The bra she’s got on underneath is lacy in kind of a dowdy way, but we’d say her thighs are buff enough to offset that. And it’s hard to see here, but she’s wearing fishnets. We can’t help but love that even if we hate it.
And hello! In case you can’t tell, these are male backup (har) dancers. Only Madonna would find a way to momentarily draw more attention to their asses than hers. Equal-opportunity exploitation! Photo: Getty Images

Madonna’s Most Iconic Performance Costumes
Madonna has done a lot, but she’s never done a greatest hits tour. Until now. This summer, the crowned Queen of Pop will hit the road with The Celebration Tour, her first arena show not directly tied to an album, but instead encompassing her entire career.
Over her four decade career, the singer has transformed herself time and time again. In her early days, Madonna was best known for her uber ’80s ensembles, complete with teased hair and oversized denim. From there, she experimented with lingerie-as-outerwear, buttoned-up menswear, and just about everything in between. And then there are the on-stage theatrics: larger-than-life crosses, working cars, and the occasional yoga routine. Perhaps, while revisiting her past hits, she’ll also be tempted to revisit some of her most memorable costumes, too.
Here, in honor of the upcoming tour, a look back at the singer’s most iconic on-stage fashion moments .

Madonna enlists Miu Miu, Givenchy, Stella and YSL for Sticky & Sweet costumes

Costume designs for Madonna's upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour have been unveiled, and show no signs that the Material Girl will tone down her look as she reaches 50.
Enlisting the help of a host of the world's top designers, the singer will wear costumes by Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, custom-made shoes by Miu Miu and Stella McCartney, sunglasses by Moschino, and other pieces by Yves Saint Laurent and Roberto Cavalli, among others.
Even her band get in on the designer action, wearing bespoke suits by Tom Ford.
Speaking to WWD, Madonna's long-term stylist Arianne Phillips revealed that the tour would be split into four sections, each with a distinct look. The first is gangsta pimp and Art Deco, which will feature Givenchy costumes, followed by old school, which will see Madonna revisit the style which marked the start of her career. Next up is gypsy, followed by a Japanese influences rave section.
Commenting on Madonna's style, Phillips revealed that age would have little effect on her wardrobe choices. 'She always wants to push the envelope,' Phillips describes, 'There are no vanity considerations based on her age. She looks good in everything.'
The tour kicks off in Cardiff on 23 August.

Madonna needs a brand new bag. And according to WWD , she’s going with a boho gypsy look designed exclusively for her by Givenchy for her upcoming tour, which hits stateside in October. She’s not taking any chances on a backup singer screwing up her style palette either. The article reads:
‘Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits, while Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Jeremy Scott.’
In other words, everyone will be head-to-toe in designer something. Madonna’s longtime, talented stylist Arianne Phillips is at the helm and she’s the one who conceived that cowboy look for Madonna and the much ballyhooed purple leotard. I won’t bemoan the state of style in the music world -- with designers outfitting tours and stages resembling catwalks -- but I will say that spontaneity is dead. R.I.P. Still, who doesn’t love that ever-forgiving, loose-fitting peasant chic? It sure beats the leotard, which is only appropriate for tumbling.
Stevie Nicks deserves cred for pioneering the high black boots and diaphonous, Wiccan look. But even Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez have tried their hand at playing one of the nomadic tribe. Here’s a picture of J.Lo from her ‘Ain’t It Funny’ video -- she took the gypsy look a bit too costume-y. The girls in the head scarves behind her remind me of my ‘fortune teller’ Halloween costume from fifth grade.

Here’s why Guram Gvasalia of Vetements Designing Madonna’s World Tour Costumes Makes Perfect Sense
The Queen of Pop’s 12th concert tour will be a major opportunity to see Gvasalia’s full creative range at work
- Text by Kristian Burt
Recently, Vetements’ current Creative Director Guram Gvasalia revealed that the fashion house will design the costumes for Madonna’s highly anticipated world tour titled ‘Celebration’. The announcement came through as most news does nowadays — through an Instagram post on Gvasalia’s personal account, with one slide showing both sitting next to each other working on designs and the other slide revealing the custom logo for this one-of-a-kind collaboration.
The caption read, “@MADONNA thank you so much for the last months! Working so closely together on the costumes for your tour and bringing our visions and creativity into one big CELEBRATION. Designing your costumes was such a privilege and an honor. Seeing you work, seeing your drive and determination is so inspiring, now I understand why you are who you are. You are a fighter, you are an icon, you are THE QUEEN!”
With this partnership brewing, it now makes for no surprise that the ‘Queen of Pop’ has been showing off some head-to-toe Vetements looks since announcing the tour back on January 17th, such as a series of photos in a Vetements distressed denim and pants combo with a black corset underneath, or posing in Vetements x New Rock’s black gamer ankle boots in a post about tour merch—perhaps hinting at what her loyal fan base can expect to see for the collaboration.
Look how cute i am now that swelling from surgery has gone down. Lol ? pic.twitter.com/jd8hQyi2Az — Madonna (@Madonna) February 20, 2023
Madonna’s world tour wardrobes have had major impacts on the fashion and pop culture worlds in the past. For her “Blond Ambition” tour in 1990, Madonna wore the now iconic cone bras designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, effectively launching the designer into music fashion history.
Having also worked with the likes of Riccardo Tisci for her “Sticky and Sweet” tour in 2008, and later for her Givenchy haute couture-packed Super Bowl halftime show in 2012, the pop star’s latest collaborative fashion efforts make total sense for why she went with Gvasalia. Following in the footsteps of Gaultier and Tisci, Gvasalia’s work with Vetements stands for where fashion is today and how the relevancy of the house remains strong through the power of streetwear and its place in media.
The “Celebration” tour was set to begin in Vancouver on July 15th. And with the tour originally set to consist of 80 shows across 35 American and European cities, fans can expect to see many, many costumes.
As it is a retrospective tour going through four decades of Madonna’s discography, the pop star has given many hints on her Instagram as to some of the archived pieces that could make a comeback, including some cone bra corsets. We’ve also seen glimpses of rehearsals, with lots of full black looks, and hints at bringing back some classics as tour merch. The set list has not been officially announced, though some fans believe rehearsal videos point to “You Must Love Me,” “Everybody,” and “Burning Up” potentially being included.
? pic.twitter.com/FB1N2Vxrub — Madonna (@Madonna) July 10, 2023
Some have said the announcement comes at a peculiar moment, as the tour has been paused for an undetermined amount of time as Madonna was recently hospitalized due to a bacterial infection. Though the pop star is making a full recovery, reports have said she is not recovering as quickly as expected, leaving the tour’s future to be determined as dates have been rescheduled and the kick-off to commence now in October in Europe.

Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour Rolls Into New York With Reworked Hits, Virtual Britney
By Caryn Ganz
Madonna may have toyed with dominance and submission on this year’s Hard Candy , but there was no question who was carrying the cane at the first New York City date on her Sticky & Sweet Tour last night (the trek’s second stop in the States). Emerging on a throne to the thumpy sound of “Candy Shop,” the 50-year-old singer kicked off a tightly choreographed two-hour set designed to accentuate her physical and musical strength and flexibility.
(Check out photos from Madonna’s opening-night show here.)
Skipping rope during a section evoking the 1980s New York where she began her career, Madonna pranced on the DJ’s table during a beefier “Into the Groove” as colorful Keith Haring figures spelled out the lyrics on giant video screens. With some chunky power chords, “Borderline” became a Cheap Trick-style power-pop song, “Vogue” was mashed up with the funky brass of “4 Minutes” and “La Isla Bonita” morphed into a Gogol Bordello-esque hoe-down featuring fiddle and accordion.
“You know who’s not invited to my party? Sarah fucking Palin” Madonna shouted after a montage of images that included Oprah and Bono urged “Get up — it’s time — your life — your choice.” As expected, she did permit another embattled mother to share her spotlight briefly: during a punchy “Human Nature,” Britney Spears paced a stalled elevator in a video. When the song reached its final refrain of “I’m not your bitch” Spears spoke: “It’s Britney, bitch!” and the crowd erupted. Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell also made virtual appearances.
The focus quickly returned to Madonna, of course, and her impossibly muscled body. Strutting down the set’s catwalk during a defiant “She’s Not Me,” tearing out guitar chords at the noisy conclusion of “Hung Up” or reinventing older hits like “Like a Prayer,” she made a solid argument for her continued durability as the Jumbotron showed off her sinewy arms and steely legs. (She rarely sounded winded, though she was singing live.) Unlike the Confessions tour, where her dancers and costumes stood out fantastically, Sticky & Sweet was all Madonna, all the time. It was her Candy Shop, after all, and when the lights came up after a spectacular clubland rendition of “Give It 2 Me,” “Holiday” came over the sound system, and fans danced their way to the exits.

Virgin Tour is pure 80s bliss! The peak of the very first wave of Madonna Mania; I wouldn't ever get rid of that one. I actually loved the Sticky and Sweet tour, I was 14-15 at the time and I couldn't afford to go. One of my main regrets in life! The Drowned World tour was kinda lame.
