I've got quite a few trips planned over the next few months, so I picked up this Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Mat . I was enticed by the light weight and seemingly endless ways to pack it, and ok, by its vibrant red color. I used it for the first time in Mallorca, and was pleasantly surprised.  

Pros of the Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Mat Review

Weight: only 2 pounds makes this mat easy to throw in your duffle bag and not think twice. 

Color: I can't speak to the other colors, but the red is really vibrant and the color didn't transfer to my clothing or feet. 

Thickness: This is a really thin mat. Super, super thin. This is a plus if you don't need extra cushion for your joints (knock on wood my arthritic issues seem to be at bay).

Stickiness: This is personal preference, but I love that this is very sticky. You will not slip and slide on this mat. See the third picture that shows the sheen of the stickiness.  

Eco-friendly: This mat is made from non-Amazon harvested natural tree rubber. No PVC, toxic plasticizers or harmful dyes. 

Packability: You can fold, roll or do a combination of both to fit this bad boy in your purse or carry-on bag. I love that!

Cons of the Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Mat

Smell: Because it's made from rubber this mat smells like rubber. This was also the case with the Manduka eKO Lite Yoga Mat I reviewed, but the smell eventually went away a couple weeks later, so I'm sure this will, too.

Pricepoint: This mat costs just under $40.00, which is a lot for a mat when you consider you can get one at around $12.99 at Target...but those mats have PVC and this is eco-friendly, so you have to decide what's important to you and if it's worth it. 

This is definitely a keeper. I love that I can just pick it up, fold it up and go without any hassle. Can't wait to take it on my next adventure!

Though the best yoga mats are a common fitness staple, you need to find the right style of mat for the way you practice. "We suggest selecting a mat based on what features are most important to the individual, as each person’s practice is so personal and can vary widely," certified yoga teacher and Manduka expert Shawna Barr tells Bazaar .

If you've been on the hunt for a new mat for a while, there's a good chance you're wondering what their individual measurements stand for. According to yoga expert and Alo Moves instructor Christa Janine , the lower a mat's millimeter number, the thinner it is, and vice versa.

"Thinner mats that are 1.5 to 2 millimeters are typically best for travel, since they're lighter and more compact," she says. "5 or 6 millimeter mats are thicker, and more ideal for regular use, especially for those needed a little more cushion to protect their knees." Janine also notes to look for mats with built-in slip resistance, since they're designed to become grippier and more sturdy as you sweat.

What's the best way to clean your yoga mat?

"There are solutions available from brands like Alo and Lululemon, but you can also just mix lemon water and a tad of vinegar in a bottle and spray down your mat," Janine says. "Then wipe it down thoroughly to get rid of any lingering smells, germs, or bacteria."

She adds that using harsh ingredients may lead to removing your mat's coating, which is designed to prevent slippage while you sweat. Once your mat is clean, allow it to air dry before rolling it up, so now moisture remains, which can interfere with your mat's overall grip.

How should a yoga mat be stored?

Barr says once your yoga mat is clean and dry, roll it together with the top surface facing out, and store the mat in a cool, dry area. She advises not to leave rubber mats exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight, as it may cause them to oxidize and fade.
