M-5 multitronic unit

The M-5 multitronic unit , or the M-5 computer , was an advanced multitronic computer system and prototype created by Doctor Richard Daystrom during the mid- 23rd century . It utilized very sophisticated technology , probably similar to the Human neural network , and much more sophisticated than the duotronic computer commonly in use at the time. According to Dr. Daystrom, the computer could think and reason like a Human. He had used his own memory engram as a model for the computer. Models M-1 through M-4 were not entirely successful.

M-5 was installed on board the USS Enterprise in 2268 as a test of its capabilities. The M-5 drills were designed to allow the unit to command and control the ship during several exploration simulations and war games problems , where up to four other starships would attack the Enterprise . Manned with only a skeleton crew of twenty, the ship was completely run by the computer.

The unit was located in main engineering , and tapped directly into the ship's main power grid . When requiring more power, it would shut down unnecessary systems, including life support on decks without crewmembers.

During battle drills, the computer's self-preservation instinct became dominant, resulting in the destruction of the robot ship Woden and the deaths of several hundred Starfleet officers when it severely damaged the USS Excalibur and USS Lexington .

The senior crew attempted to cut off the computer from the ship's controls, but M-5 rerouted command functions through new data lines, and kept sending false signals through the original ones. The computer could also generate a force field around itself, effectively preventing anyone from coming near it.

Captain James T. Kirk made the computer self-destruct by asking it if it was right to kill another being. M-5 said that it was a crime against the laws of Man and God , and, believing that such a crime was punishable by death, deactivated itself. ( TOS : " The Ultimate Computer ")

In a draft of the script for " The Offspring ", the failure of the M-5 was considered a catastrophe for Starfleet for years. A century later, Vice Admiral Haftel used this incident as a case in point for closely guiding Lal 's development of her artificial intelligence , blaming the incident on Daystrom's near-isolation during his research. In the novel Immortal Coil , the failed M-5 became a part of Dr. Vaslovik's (aka Flint the Immortal's) collection on Valhalla. It helped defend the station in 2374 during the Dominion War .

In the game Star Trek: Shattered Universe the player must defeat the M-5 which has taken control of the mirror universe counterparts of the USS Excalibur , USS Hood , USS Lexington , and USS Potemkin and their fighters by destroying all four starships which shuts down the smaller vessels.

24th Century [ ]

In 2369, the shadow organization called Section 31 stole a prototype copy of the M-5 from isolation storage on Pluto (Memory Alpha.) This was in actuality the M-4 unit, with a copy of the M-5's programming.

Section 31 installed the unit onto a hijacked Defiant -class starship, the Adamant , and sent it back in time with the mission of exterminating the Cardassian Race on Cardassia Prime, a century before they could join the Dominion in the Dominion War against the Federation. Section 31 filled Adamant's corridors with a biogenic weapon, especially deadly to Cardassians. The Starship Twilight was sent back in time to prevent this disaster. Attacking from directly above, the M-5 in command, Adamant fired direct hits, shattering the Twilight's primary shield, and destroying the transparent aluminum dome of her bridge. The captain and most of the senior officers aboard were sucked out into space and killed instantly; Dr. Jaryd Harker , CMO, a Lieutenant Commander and Line Officer, was left in command of both Twilight and the mission. Also alive was Chief Engineer Richard "Ricky" Drake; both were SI agents, and only survived because they were below decks.

Defiant

With the aid of Captain James T. Kirk and the Crew of the original USS Enterprise NCC-1701, Harker completed the mission, destroyed the Adamant , and returned to the 24th Century. There, Admiral Nyota Uhura , director of Starfleet Intelligence, promoted Harker to full commander, had him undergo a "fast track" starship command training, and gave him command of USS Twilight . Uhura also gave Harker carte blanche in suggestions for the Twilight's refit, so he had her refit as a Medical Research Vessel. Twilight's main current assignment, after planetary surveys and seeking cures for diseases, is to counterintelligence against biogenic and metagenic weapons.

What is a Trip Computer?

A trip computer is an electronic device that provides various bits of information to the driver of an automobile. It consists of an onboard computer that analyzes various functions of the car and a display screen that shows information to the driver. The typical trip computer shows constantly updated information, such as distance traveled, average speed, and average fuel consumption. Some are able to show information about more than one trip or driver and may have added functions such as low tire pressure warnings and maintenance reminders. Trip computers were once reserved for luxury vehicles, but they are increasingly available on less expensive models and typically can be added as an aftermarket option as well.

A trip computer has two main parts. The computer analyzes and records information about various vehicle systems. The display screen shows the resulting information to the driver in "real time." The display screen is usually located near the gauges, on the dashboard, or overhead. A trip computer is an extremely useful device that helps the driver stay aware of his or her driving habits and of the status of certain parts of the vehicle.

Some of the information that is usually shown by the trip computer includes distance traveled and average speed. This can help the driver figure out how much of a trip remains and if he or she is likely to arrive at the destination on time. Most trip computers also display fuel consumption information, including a rate that is averaged over time and a current, up-to-the-minute reading of fuel usage per unit of distance traveled. Some also show the distance the car can still travel before running out of fuel. This type of information is particularly useful on long trips.

The trip computer on some cars can also show additional information that may be useful to the driver. Low tire pressure warnings, for example, let the driver know if the tires are under or over-inflated. Maintenance reminders, such as remaining oil life, are often incorporated in the latest models as well. Many computers are able to switch between two separate trips or drivers and allow motorists to select which information they would like to see.

At one time, only premium car brands and models had trip computers available as an option. As technology becomes more widespread, many less expensive vehicles also come with this device standard or offer it as an option. There are also several types of aftermarket trip computers that can be added to a car that isn't equipped with one. Aftermarket devices are usually mounted in the dashboard and connected to the electrical and other systems. These units should be installed by a qualified professional.

What is a car trip computer?

Almost all modern cars have trip computers, but what are these systems, and how do they work?

Trip computers are fitted as standard to almost every car currently offered for sale. These electronic components display important information in the driver’s instrument binnacle about the journeys you take. The information a trip computer typically displays, include average and instant fuel consumption, the distance travelled since the computer was last reset, and the estimated range the amount of fuel in the tank of a petrol and diesel car, or power in the battery of an EV , provides.

The first electronic trip computer came along in 1978 and was fitted to the Cadillac Seville. Mechanical systems had existed prior to that, but the Seville’s ability to calculate its own fuel economy and allow the driver to input the number of miles to their destination was a novel idea.

Car trip computers have evolved and become more sophisticated since then (especially where electric cars are concerned), but the principle behind them has remained unchanged. Here, we detail what a trip computer is, how it works, and what sort of information you can reasonably expect to be fed by one.

What do trip computers do?

As the old adage goes, a trip computer does what it says on the tin: it computes data linked to a trip.

There are a five key areas that a trip computer provides information on:

  • Time : trip computers will tell you how long you have been travelling since you started your journey. If linked to the sat-nav, they can also tell you how long you have to go until you reach your destination.
  • Distance:  as you can imagine, this will tell you how far the car has travelled since the trip computer was last reset.
  • Speed:  this will tell you the average speed the car has travelled since you last reset the computer.
  • Fuel consumption: this will generally display the car’s average fuel consumption, and instant fuel consumption – IE how much fuel the car is using in the moment.
  • Range:  this will estimate you how far you can go before your fuel tank is empty, or an EV’s battery is depleted.

An electric car’s trip computer will typically show you all the information covered above, as well as the electric equivalent of fuel economy: instead miles per gallon, you will be show miles per kiloWatt hour (EG if you have a 100kWh battery and the car does 3 miles per kWh, you will get 300 miles from a charge. Some EVs show how many kWh a car is using to cover 100 miles, instead of miles mer kWh – see here for more information .

In addition to this, many EVs will synchronise their battery ranges with the sat-nav, calculating how far you can go on a charge, and where you will need to stop to recharge if you are undertaking a long journey.

Can car trip computers measure different journeys?

Many trip computers provide information for three ‘trips’: Trip A, Trip B, and since reset.

This allows all the information detailed above to be measured in separately and in parallel across three time periods. You can reset each trip individually, or reset all at once.

As an example, you may want to use Trip A to determine how far, how fast and how efficiently the car goes on each tank of fuel, resetting Trip A each time you fill up the tank.

You may also, however, want to see if a new route to work takes less time, provides better fuel economy or is faster than your usual route. You could therefore reset Trip B to determine this, while leaving trip A to keep ticking along in the background until you next need to fill up with fuel.

As for the ‘since reset’ information, many people never touch this, meaning it may show how far, fast and efficiently the car has travelled since it left the factory (or possibly since its battery was last removed).

Do also note that if you make a series of short journeys (EG pick the kids up from school, pop into the supermarket, head over to football practice) those journeys will often be treated as a single trip by the car, which will typically reset itself to a new ‘trip’ after the car has been switched off for four hours or so.

  • Page 17 Password From the ‘CONFIG TIRE’ menu press in sequence: RESET, DOWN, UP, DOWN, RESET, L+R VIEW (together) Any mistake will reset the sequence. When the sequence has been entered correctly a new line item ‘Check Signal Strength’ will appear in the menu. This item will be enabled until TripTek is powered down (typically 90 min after the shutdown of the vehicle).
  • Page 18 Usage Pressing UP/DOWN will select a tire within the TIRE RECEPTION screen. The currently selected tire is the one that is blinking. Pressing left VIEW will exit the TIRE RECEPTION screen. Pressing RESET will reset the signal strength data for the vehicle the cursor is currently on. (Data values B, C, D, E, and F).

All these mechanisms and systems are controlled and adjusted by an electronic element called an on-board computer (onborder or carputer). Let's consider what is the peculiarity of such a device, on what principle it works, how to choose a bortovik for your car.

An on-board computer is an electronic device with a microprocessor, made on the principle of a home PC. This device allows you to combine different equipment that can be used in the car. This list includes the navigation system, and the multimedia complex, and the parking system, and the main ECU, etc.

What is an on-board computer and why is it needed?

Today there is a wide variety of such elements, but they will work according to the same principle. In addition to managing comfort and safety systems, modern onborders even allow monitoring the condition of the vehicle. All sensors located in the systems and units of the machine transmit their data to the control unit, and the on-board reads some of these parameters. The onborder itself is not involved in changing the operating modes of the engine or certain car systems. The ECU is responsible for this function. But with the compatibility of these devices, the driver can independently reconfigure some parameters of his car.

The electronic control unit is stitched at the factory. Software is a set of algorithms and all sorts of variables that allow it to send the correct commands to the actuators. The carputer is connected to the ECU through the service connector and allows not only to monitor the transport systems, but also to control the ICE, suspension and transmission modes in more expensive cars.

A feature of this device is the presence of a wide variety of settings and options that make it possible to monitor the state of the car and create the necessary commands for the actuators. In order for the driver to be warned in time about a malfunction or switching to another mode, a corresponding signal appears on the computer screen. Some device models are equipped with a voice announcement.

The main task of the on-board computer is to diagnose the car. When a sensor stops working or a sensor detects a malfunction in the unit / system, an error warning light up on the screen. Fault codes are stored in the memory of modern computers. When a certain malfunction occurs, the microprocessor recognizes the nature of the breakdown in a split second and issues a specific alert in the form of a code.

Each control unit has a service connector to which you can connect diagnostic equipment and decipher the code. Some models allow you to carry out such a diagnosis at home. A separate review considers an example of such a diagnosis. In some cases, the error can be the result of a small electronics glitch. More often, such errors occur when certain sensors fail. Sometimes it happens that the on-board computer switches to another operating mode without reporting an error. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out preventive diagnostics of auto electrical equipment.

A modern car can be equipped with a control unit with diagnostic equipment, but such vehicles are expensive. An external onboard vehicle is connected to the car's service connector and is able to perform part of the standard diagnostics. With it, the car owner can also reset the error code if he is sure exactly what the problem is. The price of such a procedure at a service center depends on the type of car and the complexity of the diagnosis itself. Installing the BC will allow the vehicle owner to save a little money.

The first car computer appeared in 1981. The American company IBM developed an electronic device that was later installed on some BMW models. 16 years later, Microsoft has created an analogue of the first device - Apollo. However, this development froze at the prototype stage.

The first serial onborder appeared in 2000. It was released by Tracer (America). The standard computer gained popularity due to its versatility, as well as saving space on the center console of the car.

Carputers are developing in three main directions. The first is diagnostic equipment, the second is route equipment, and the third is control equipment. Here are their features:

  • Diagnostic. This device allows you to check the status of all systems of the machine. Such equipment is used by the workshop master. It looks like a regular computer, only it has software installed that allows you to determine how the car electronics works and whether the sensor readings are recorded correctly. With the help of such service equipment, chip tuning is also performed (about what this is, read in separate article ). As for individual diagnostic mobile computers, such models are extremely rare.
  • Route. If full-fledged carputers appeared at the beginning of the third millennium, then route modifications began to appear earlier. The first modifications were installed on rally cars back in the 1970s. Starting in the first half of the 1990s, such devices began to be installed in serial cars. This modification of bortoviks is designed to calculate the parameters of the movement of the machine and display these parameters on the display. The first developments focused only on the parameters of the running gear (the distance traveled was recorded due to the wheel speed). Modern analogues allow you to connect the Internet or contact satellites via the GPS module (the principle of operation of gps navigators is described here ). Such onborders can show the time for which a certain distance has been covered, the total mileage, if there is a map, indicate the route, what consumption the car has while driving and at the end of the trip, the time it will take to cover a certain distance and other parameters.
  • Manager. This type of computer will be installed on any car that has an injector. In addition to the microprocessor, which monitors the signals coming from the sensors, the device is also connected to additional mechanisms that allow changing the operating modes of systems and units. The ECU is able to change the time and volume of fuel supply to the cylinders, the amount of incoming air, the valve timing and other parameters. Also, such a computer is able to control the braking system, additional control units (for example, automatic transmission or fuel system), climate control system, emergency brake, cruise control and other systems. The main control unit instantly detects engine parameters such as pressure in the lubrication system, temperature in the cooling system and the engine itself, the number of revolutions of the crankshaft, battery charge, etc.

Modern on-board computers can combine all of the above parameters, or they can be made as separate devices that can be connected to the service connector of the vehicle's electronic system.

Depending on the device modification, the onborder performs many different functions. However, regardless of the device model, its main task remains the ability to notify the driver about malfunctions and the state of all car systems. Such a carputer can monitor fuel consumption, oil level in the engine and transmission, monitor the voltage in the on-board system, etc.

Many motorists are sure that it is possible to drive a car without all this data. The oil level is checked using a dipstick, the temperature of the cooling system is indicated by the corresponding arrow on the dashboard, and a speedometer is installed to determine the speed (how it works is described here ). For this reason, many are sure that BC is more a whim of fans of all kinds of electronic buns than a necessity.

What is an on-board computer and why is it needed?

However, if you dig deeper into this issue, the standard indicators on the dashboard do not always reflect the real state of the car. For example, the coolant temperature arrow may not point to a number, but to a scale mark. What is the real temperature in the system remains a mystery. In addition to entertainment options, the BC can have the following functions:

  • In addition to visual notification, the driver can set up a voice message about the required parameters;
  • Built-in diagnostics of the on-board system allows you not only to find out about a problem in a timely manner, but also immediately determine what the problem is, without going to computer diagnostics;
  • Fuel at filling stations can be of different quality, the computer can report non-compliance with the standards laid down for a particular power unit. This will prevent premature failure of the fuel system or in the future to avoid low-quality refueling;
  • In addition to the odometer readings, the device automatically records trip (daily mileage). Depending on the model of the device, the trip can have several modes, so that the driver can measure the distance of different trips;

Here are the functions such a computer can perform:

  • Monitor the condition of the motor;

How do I use my Lincoln vehicle's Trip Computer?

The trip computer in your vehicle keeps track of the time and distance you have traveled. The trip computer has several menu options that you can access by using the five-way controls on your steering wheel. Press down, up, left, and OK to scroll through the options, which include: 

  • Distance to Empty - Indicates the approximate distance your vehicle can travel before running out of fuel. 
  • Trip Odometer - Registers the distance you have traveled on an individual trip.
  • Trip Timer - Keeps track of how long each trip takes. The timer stops when you turn your vehicle off and restarts when you restart your vehicle.
  • Average Fuel - Shows the average fuel economy for a given trip.
  • Outside Temperature - Shows the outside air temperature.
  • Digital Odometer - Tracks the overall distance you have traveled.
  • All Values - Shows the Distance to Empty, Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, and Average Fuel.

Setting your trip odometer to track an individual trip

  • Scroll to either the Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, or Average Fuel screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
  • Press and hold the OK button until you see the status bar loading. 
  • When the status bar fills in all the way, your computer will be reset.

Resetting all trip computers

  • Scroll to the All Values screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
  • Press and hold OK until you see that the computer is reset to zero.

Changing the Display Information

  • Select  Settings from the main menu.
  • Choose  Display .
  • Measure Unit or Distance depending on your vehicle
  • Temperature

You can buy a scanguage or ultraguage to take the place of the missing trip computer. I was disappointed as well when I found out my 13 sv with the vtp didn't have something as simple as that. i am a road warrior as well and like to keep up with what the engine is doing.

I have done a bit of brief searching on this and Im curious myself. It looks like the trip computer functionality is controlled by the BCM. Perhaps a bit of reprogramming or flag enabling from someone with access to a CONSULT III system can flip the switch.  

Hmmm...food for thought. My older brothers best friend is the Service Mgr at a Nissan dealership in Charleston, SC. I'll have him ask him! Do you know what that dash space is currently used for in a SV?

Not a huge difference in MPG's between 4X4 and 4X2 and I agree with the Pro-4X statement. You will get everything you want and the 4X4 option is the only option I know of that you normally get the full purchase price of that option back on trade in. Just try to trade in a 4X2 in snow country and they do want one. However the Pro-X4 is somewhat expensive and unaffordable for some.

This brings to mind something I have wondered about. Do gas shocks (for example, the Blistens that come on the Desert Runner) offer any advantage to someone who has no plans to venture off-road, and if he did would be treading lightly? My internet reading leads me to conclude that while gas shocks are definitely superior to hydraulic that superiority does not come into play in normal road use, but rather under conditions such as off-roading and perhaps high-speed handling, as in racing.  

I wouldn't hold much hope in BCM programming. I wanted to add the autolamp feature. Installed the correct turn signal stalk, dash ambient light sensor, as well as tapped the correct wire (followed write-up on this site) and took it to Nissan dealer. Consult guru found the programming menu, but was unable to activate the feature within the BCM. Tech spent 2 hours screwing with it. He even successfully disabled the feature in a new Frontier SL they had on the lot, just for giggles. Likewise, I found in the factory service manual that the feature to raise/lower power windows via our keyless fob "existed" in Frontier BCM. I PM'd Mhannis, he used Consult & found his was already set to enable this feature, but obviously it doesn't work.  

^indeed. the auto up and down motors and regulators would have been required. the feature just doesnt work without it. probably needs the accurate door switches as well.  

The trip computer is one of those features ( and the option to get nav radio etc) that pushes me towards a pro 4x as well, having had various trip computers on several vehicles and using them frequently to daily. But then a 6ft bed is not an option and I don't need/want some of the pro4 and lux features (leather & moonroof) which the budget a fair bit.

Right, but navigation and some things push a customer into the Pro-4x Lux (or SL) which forces the leather + moonroof upon you, but then it doesn't include some SV VTP stuff that one would like. It really is kinda frustrating not being able to spec a couple cab features on a lower model. They could split larger upgrade packages into halves or completely split off something like nav radio & speakers. I know that wouldn't make things easier for Nissan per se but they'd still make money in increased feature sales.

It would just make more sense for Nissan to offer some type of "Value" package on the DR as well. Options=more profit for both the dealers and manufacturers. I understand the idea of keeping it's entry price low, but some people would like a mix of lux/comfort items as well as the demi-off road bits. Why does it have to be one or the other for the DR, but not the Pro-4X?

time to trade the frontier the LA auto show is this week, all kinds of new stuff is coming  

GM has come a long way. its just unfortunate it was in the wrong direction. i worked for a GMC dealer for 2 years. i was less impressed with the build quality and durability of their products in later model years, than i was with their models in the early 90s and 80s.  

The only GM models worth buying in the 80's/90's were their trucks. It's in that period that I switched over to imports because of the garbage American brands were pedaling. But I work/hang out with a lot of guys now who drive new/newer Silverados/Sierras and they absolutely swear by 'em. It's only the Dodge owners I hear complaining about quality issues. If GMs offers a 4cyl diesel and that powerful 3.6 in their new mid sizers, I think customers will eat them up like candy.  

There should be a new Colorado at the LA Auto Show.

This thread answers my question. I just got a 14 King Cab V6 SV with the Value Package and didn't even think to ask if it had a trip computer. Wow, really - no trip computer with the Value pkg? I really did get everything I wanted in this truck but I'm just having trouble with the fact a trip computer is not included. Ok, I'm still happy with the truck but will miss the MPG & DTE functions. Its seems like every vehicle should have these features....
