I AM A PROSPECTIVE:

Some say it’s where you are that matters most..

The feel of a place. The smell of fresh rain and fir trees. Is it a place? Or is it the people? It’s a sense of purpose that takes flight and a sense of a belonging that runs deep. It’s original, and unexpected. Ground breaking, and world class. Research, discovery, innovation, and exploration. The environment, the community, the interests you awaken… it’s sand, sun, wind and snow. And if anyone asks, it never rains… Some say it’s the place, others say it’s the people.

We just say … it’s Oregon.

What makes the UO unique?

The Place for Green

Green is more than just a color we like to wear. The University of Oregon leads the nation in finding creative solutions to environmental challenges. We're #4 in sustainable design  and healthy built environments according to  DesignIntelligence, and the  Princeton Review ranks our  Oregon MBA in the Top 4 "Green MBAs."

For over half a century, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology  has offered immersive classes at the ecologically rich Oregon coast. We invented green chemistry; using chemistry research to build more environmentally sustainable products and laboratories. And every year, our Sustainable Cities Initiative brings together students and community leaders from across Oregon to create environmentally sustainable solutions in urban planning.

The future of our environment will also be decided in the courtroom. The Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center in the School of Law is ranked among the top ten programs by U.S. News and World Report , and has consistently ranked among the leading environmental law programs for 16 years.

This public-private partnership allows the institute to not only offer an innovative new academic program but also to build a community-led solution to promote the mental health and well-being of children and families.

Meanwhile, U.S. News and World Report ranks our College of Education in the Top 20 nationally, and it has ranked our special education program # 3 for 25 consecutive years.

In addition, the University of Oregon's Prevention Science Institute focuses on understanding human development, preventing behavioral health problems, and implementing effective interventions in community settings.

Oregon also ranks in the top 25 percent in business, biological sciences, clinical psychology, earth sciences, fine arts, psychology, and speech-language pathology.

In the annual U.S. News & World Report ranking, the University of Oregon School of Law is the only law school in the Pacific Northwest to boast three nationally top-ranked specialty programs: we’re #1 in legal writing, #7 in environmental law, and #11 in dispute resolution.

We support our graduate students; 84% of doctoral students are funded with Graduate Employee appointments. Annually, graduate students receive $45 million in graduate employee support and an additional $2 million in fellowships awarded and administered by our Division of Graduate Studies .

We excel at language education,  ranking in the top ten  among North American universities for degrees conferred in five different languages.

The UO ranks #2 nationwide in Gilman Scholarships, supporting study abroad opportunities . We have 48 Fulbright U.S. Student Program Grantees in the past decade, and more than 1,000 Ducks have served with the Peace Corps since 1961.

University of Idaho murder suspect says cellphone data proves he was out driving at the time of the slayings

The legal team of the suspect accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022 has said that cellphone tower data proves he was out driving late at night and miles away when they were killed.

Attorneys for Bryan Kohberger, who was indicted on charges of murder by a grand jury last May, said in a new court filing Wednesday that his alibi was confirmed by the location of his mobile device.

All four victims — Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20 and Ethan Chapin, 20 — were stabbed to death in the early hours of Nov. 13, 2022, at their off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho.

DNA from a knife sheath  left at the crime scene led investigators to Kohberger, prosecutors said.

Kohberger's legal team has previously argued that he was out driving alone at the time of the killings — but now they have pledged to call an expert witness they say can prove it using cellphone data.

Kohberger, who lived in the town of Pullman, Washington, 9½ miles away from Moscow, was arrested in Pennsylvania in December 2022 and has pleaded not guilty. He was a doctoral student at the Washington State University studying criminal justice and criminology.

Public defender Anne C. Taylor filed legal papers in the county of Latah on Wednesday in response to the state's demand for details on the claimed alibi.

Kohberger's team intends to rely on testimony from cell tower data expert Sy Ray, an experienced military and law enforcement instructor who they say can prove their client was miles away from Moscow at the time of the crime. Ray has testified in many criminal cases, including homicides.

A probable cause affidavit last year argued that security video showed a white Hyundai Elantra was spotted near the scene — investigators said this was driven by Kohberger.

But Wednesday's filing says Kohberger's car cannot be the same one as he didn't travel that far east on the night in question.

"If not disclosed, Mr. Ray’s testimony will also reveal that critical exculpatory evidence, further corroborating Mr. Kohberger’s alibi, was either not preserved or has been withheld," the filing said.

Ray founded ZetX Corp., specializing in cellular geolocation mapping, in Arizona in 2014. LexisNexis  purchased the company in 2021.

ZetX’s Trax mapping software and Ray himself were criticized in a 2022 ruling by District Court Judge Juan Villaseñor in Colorado in a trial about a man accused of stalking an ex-girlfriend. Villaseñor ruled that the Trax-related evidence was inadmissible and based on a “sea of unreliability” after other experts found the technology to be problematic.

“For one, the Court doesn’t find Ray credible,” Villaseñor wrote. “He inflated his credentials, inaccurately claiming to be an engineer — he’s ‘more of an engineer than an engineer’— despite having no qualifications, licenses, or credentials to support that label. As noted, his sole academic degree is an associate’s, and there’s no evidence that it’s related to engineering. Nor is there evidence that Ray’s taken any engineering classes. To be sure, he’s created a booming business and has successfully pitched Trax to several law-enforcement agencies. But a sound business model doesn’t equal an accurate error rate.”

Ray did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

The defense filing said that Kohberger was an avid runner and hiker and that as the school year began this activity decreased and nighttime drives increased — something his attorneys say is proven by cellphone data and photographs he took of the night sky.

Previously , authorities obtained a search warrant for data connected to cellphones around in the area at the time of the killings. Kohberger's did not show up in a search because he had turned it off, investigators say.

However, a separate search warrant issued Dec. 23, 2022, provided Kohberger's cellphone data for the 24 hours before and after the incident, the affidavit said. This showed that he left his home two hours before the killings and then turned his phone off, only to turn it on again afterward, when it was seen traveling from Idaho to Pullman.

Later on, at 9 a.m. on the day of the deaths, Kohberger went from Pullman to an area near the crime scene before returning.

Further analysis of cellphone data found he had been near the students' home on King Road in Moscow at least 12 times in the six months before the killings, the affidavit said .

The deaths rocked the small community of Moscow, with 25,000 residents, and an 11,000-strong student population.
