14 Best Hotels in Philadelphia

By Katie James Watkinson and Regan Stephens

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Hotel Lokal Hotel

Finally stepping out of the shadow cast by a certain city a couple hours up I-95, Philadelphia has emerged as a thriving metropolis, home to award-winning restaurants , world-class historic sites, and an exciting young-professional culture. As the city has grown up, so too have its accommodations. Lokal Fishtown Hotel Philadelphia

Lokal Hotel Fishtown Arrow

When it opened in early 2019, Lokal Fishtown was only the neighborhood’s second hotel. Shocking, considering the neighborhood continues to be one of the city’s buzziest places to eat , drink , shop, and hear live music. One of four locations in the homegrown brand’s collection of “invisible service” hotels—meaning there’s no front desk or concierge. This outpost was built by local, Philadelphia makers—everything from the stylish spaces, to plants from 2nd Street greenery shop Stump, to custom beds made by neighborhood furniture maker Farmhaus Modern, to each framed artwork, block-printed pillowcase, and ceramic mug. This all adds up to a beautiful, cohesive space that communicates the vibe of the neighborhood before you ever leave the room.

Wm. Mulherin's Sons Hotel Arrow

A design-forward Fishtown alternative to name-brand Center City hotels, Wm. Mulherin’s Sons is perfect—if you're willing to forgo amenities like elevators and bellhops in favor of living like a local, that is. The hotel offers just four rooms, each uniquely decorated in an industrial-chic style (think concrete floors, exposed brick walls, and a neutral color palette punctuated by Persian rugs), but the main perk is that it sits above an excellent, seasonally-driven restaurant and bar of the same name. Rather than exchanging awkward greetings with your fellow hallmates, you're more likely to be elbowing other restaurant patrons for a taste of plates like porcini cavatelli with fontina and taleggio fonduta , and scallops with butternut squash sformata and mushroom vinaigrette. You can hold onto those bragging rights, though; guest rooms include La Colombe coffee beans (with a Baratza Virtuoso grinder to prep them), Aesop bath amenities, and a record player (grab some vintage vinyl at the “lending library.")

Fitler Club

The Rooms at Fitler Club Arrow

It's easy enough to spot Fitler Club. Stationed on the banks of the Schuylkill, between the Chestnut and Market Street bridges, the hulking concrete and glass fortress sits catty-corner from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, almost in I-76's crosshairs. What's harder, though, is figuring out how to get in, through somewhat hidden front- and back doors. Once inside, the place has a swank, subtle charm, with the feel of an urban country club for the city's go-getter in-crowd. It's the first outpost of a lifestyle concept dreamed up by founder David Gutstadt. Gutstadt, who previously led fitness brand Equinox's hotel strategy, has clearly taken some of his alma mater's fitness fanaticism to heart in creating Fitler Club; see Field House, Fitler's 25,000-square-foot exercise area, and one of its most impressive selling points. He clearly understands what high-paying members expect from their amenities, and he's made sure that Fitler Club delivers: few to no wait times for machines, plenty of staff support in the form of trainers and instructors, F&B led by Philly hometown boy Marc Vetri, and an absolutely smashing cocktail program. The membership selection process is opaque at best, but the general idea is to bring the area's movers and shakers together under one well-designed roof: athletes, doctors, investors, and the like. Fortunately, Fitler's 14 hotel rooms are open to the public, so you won't be subjected to that—it just means you might be doing Pilates next to someone who can advance your career.

Roost East Market Philadelphia Hotel

Roost East Market Arrow

Housed on five floors of an upscale residential building in the city’s centrally-located Midtown Village neighborhood, the spacious, meticulously-designed luxury apartments here are meant for extended stays, from a week to several months. With sunlit rooms, high-kitchens, full size washers and dryers, and weekly housekeeping, it’s easy to imagine staying longer. A prime position in Center City—steps from City Hall , historic Old City, the business district, and plenty of dining and shopping—makes Roost a supremely convenient place to post up while you’re in town. Less than a five minute walk away, the historic Reading Terminal Market sells Pennsylvania Dutch doughnuts, and one of the city’s best roast pork sandwiches.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Hotel The Study at University City

The Study at University City Arrow

At first glance, you might think you’ve been transported to a Nordic nation, what with the lobby’s light wood finishes, muted color palette, clean lines, and cozy wingback leather chairs. Hospitality 3 hotelier Paul McGowan (a former Starwood executive) tapped award-winning local architecture firm Digsau to infuse this 212-room hotel on the busy corner of 33rd and Chestnut streets with a sleek yet approachable design. Inside the modern, 10-story structure, the Scandinavian-mod vibe carries over to the guest rooms, which are minimalist in decor, but cover all the essentials, including a cozy bed, spacious desk, and leather armchair and ottoman. Most importantly, the fact that you're on not one, but two, college campuses doesn't mean the staff or concierge is too laid-back: McGowan's high-level hospitality experience means that top-notch service is a priority.

Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia Arrow

Fronting quaint Washington Square West, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco is housed in the former Lafayette Building of Old City, Philadelphia. From the outside, it looks like your run-of-the-mill Greek Revival building, but step inside the lobby and colorful whimsy abounds: Eighteenth century-inspired wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and Millwork treatments juxtapose boldly hued walls, federal-nouveau furnishings, and a wall of antique calligraphy pens behind the front desk. The confluence of old and new continues through the 268 guest rooms, where printed wallpaper, patterned drapes, and glossy red dressers result in a fun, sometimes overwhelming, combination. Fortunately, the hotel sits firmly in the present, with wellness-centric amenities that include Monday evening yoga classes, in-room yoga mats, and custom-designed bikes.

AKA University City

AKA University City Arrow

Before you moved to the suburbs, had two kids, and rescued a golden doodle, you might have dreamed of living in a sleek bachelor pad that looked something like AKA’s guest rooms. The reflective, all-glass builiding towers above the surrounding West Philly skyline, offering the city’s highest residential views (the apartment-style hotel offers both short- and long-term stays, plus 17 floors of annual-lease residences). While strong neighborhood vibes aren’t the main draw, convenience is: Hop over the Walnut Street bridge and you’re minutes from Rittenhouse Square ; head just a few blocks West and you’re weaving among UPenn and Drexel co-eds; drive a half-mile down Schuylkill Ave. and you’re boarding a train at 30th Street Station.

Pod Philly Hotel Philadelphia

Pod Philly Hotel Arrow

Pod Philly is located on a central stretch of 19th Street that connects the shops and restaurants of Rittenhouse Square to the office-filled skyscrapers of Market Street. With its sunlit cafe, plus plenty of couches and communal tables inhabited by guests grabbing coffee and remote workers, the hotel’s lobby has a bit of an Ace Hotel vibe, which makes sense. The same architectural firm that helped envision Manhattan’s Ace , New York City-based Stonehill Taylor, also designed Pod Philly. It's a micro hotel, so the rooms won't feel particularly spacious, but floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of light, and supremely well-designed elements—custom benches that double as storage, nightstands that become desks, lots of Danish-made wall hooks—make the square footage feel more than sufficient.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Hotel Touraines No. 108

Hotel Suites at The Touraine Arrow

The Touraine isn’t technically a hotel: It’s a landmark residential building on quiet Spruce Street in Center City. Fortunately for us, the building—which reportedly has a 10-year waitlist to get into—has converted two units (no. 105, a studio apartment, and no. 108, a one-bedroom apartment) into two hotel rooms. Each one feels like your super-chic friend’s apartment whose style you tried to copy but couldn’t pull off. (Cue the mix of contemporary and mid-century-modern-inspired furnishings, refinished wood floors, handmade ceramics, and super-comfy bed piled high with pillows and linen sheets.) Guests can expect upscale apartment-style finishes, such as a washer/dryer and brightly hued Smeg fridge, but it’s the small, thoughtful touches—aromatherapy and crystals in the bathroom, Rival Bros. coffee in the kitchen, daily newspaper delivery every morning—that make the hotel room feel like home.

Sofitel Philadelphia Arrow

What is this traffic?! More likely than not, this will be your first thought as you approach the 306-room and suite Sofitel, which is located on a perpetually bottlenecked cross street in Center City Philadelphia. But once you’re greeted by the cheery bellmen and step inside the spacious lobby—decked out with a geometric-print stone floor, funky artwork, and comfy lounge seating—all that exterior chaos will fade away. Check-in is quick and efficient, to the delight of the tourists and businesspeople who patronize the hotel, allowing you to get up to that specialty Sofitel bed that much more quickly. Hit Chez Colette for a French-inspired breakfast or weekend brunch, and take advantage of the hotel's prime location—right near Michael Solomonov's Abe Fisher and Dizengoff, and Stephen Starr's The Dandelion and The Love —come dinnertime.

The Rittenhouse

The Rittenhouse Arrow

The Rittenhouse is to Philadelphia what the Plaza Hotel is to New York City . Like the Midtown institution, the Center City hotel has an illustrious history, attracts a monied crowd, delivers on personalized service, and offers views of Philadelphia’s landmark public square and park. Each of the recently renovated guest rooms and suites is generously proportioned (from 450 to 600 square feet). That said, try to secure a room with a park view—because of the building's cantilevered facade, interior rooms contain pointed corner nooks (occupied by a desk or a table and chairs) that either feel like a spacious refuge or a Feng shui nightmare. While the central location puts you within a short stroll of some of the city's best restaurants (Stephen Starr's Parc , for example), Scarpetta, located in the hotel, also shows up: expect elegant Italian plates such as crispy fritto misto, braised rabbit pappardelle, and a full vegetarian menu.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia. Hotel The Logan Philadelphia Curio Collection by Hilton

The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton Arrow

After pulling off busy Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Logan’s calm, covered driveway and friendly valet will instantly make you feel at home. Step inside and the theme continues: The lobby is laid out like a living room, with lounge seating, a self-service coffee bar, oversized fireplace, cozy library, and local art installations. (The hotel holds more than 1,800 works of art detailing the history of Philadelphia, many of which the guests can tour via the hotel's smartphone app.) Make sure to end at least one of your nights at the ninth-floor rooftop bar, Assembly—the space has breathtaking, panoramic views, which stretch all the way from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to City Hall—and sign up for a treatment (say, reflexology, or a scalp massage) at the subterranean spa.

The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia Arrow

Set in a former bank adjacent to City Hall, the Ritz-Carlton stands out—even on the corner of downtown Philadelphia’s busy Broad Street. The building, constructed in 1908, was designed to resemble the Pantheon , complete with large white columns, a portico entrance, and gigantic dome that towers over the stately lobby. The grandiosity extends to the interiors, too; the 301 guest rooms and suites are a study in soothing, neutral tones. All of the furnishings are comfortable and contemporary, while large windows offer downtown views and plenty of natural light. (Though, if you like your space, consider booking a spacious Superior Room or suite; if you go with the latter, you’re guaranteed access to the Club Lounge, a 30th-floor oasis with a dedicated concierge and light bites available throughout the day.)

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center Arrow

This is a Four Seasons, so you can expect seamless service and a lot of greige carpeting. However, this particular outpost is somewhat unique in that so many big names were tapped for its creation: floral designer Jeff Leatham, composer Brian Eno, architect Norman Foster, and chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Greg Vernick. Their contributions along with expansive skyline views from every vantage point on the property and passionate, genuine service could make this the beginning of a transformation of Philadelphia's hotel scene .

Where to stay in Philadelphia, USA

Where to Stay in Philadelphia – Best Areas and Hotels

Home | Travel | North America | United States | Pennsylvania | Philadelphia | Where to Stay in Philadelphia – Best Areas and Hotels

When traveling abroad, get a policy from one of the  best travel insurance companies . Y ou can get a  5% discount   on Heymondo , the only insurance that pays medical bills upfront for you, HERE!

Looking for a place to stay in Philadelphia ? I’ve been living in this city for three years, so I’m going to help you find the best places to stay in Philadelphia for tourists . There are a ton of amazing things to do in Philadelphia , but most are pretty close to each other, so if you pick a good accommodation, you can walk pretty much anywhere.

Hotels in Philadelphia, PA can be a bit pricey, like in any big city in the US. However, sometimes you can find some good deals, although be careful because there are some neighborhoods you want to avoid in Philadelphia .

Don’t worry. I have been here for 3 years and I have never felt unsafe, partly because my Philly friends have always told me where to go and where not to. You will also be able to book a hotel in a good neighborhood in Philadelphia with my help.

Throughout this article, I will tell you about the best areas of Philadelphia to stay in . My advice is, if you want to get a cheap hotel , choose

a single accommodation for your entire stay. To help you, in this guide to where to stay in Philadelphia, you will find the following information:

Best areas to stay in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • Philadelphia neighborhoods to avoid
  • Best hotels in Philadelphia

Cheap accommodations in Philadelphia

  • Map of the Philly neighborhoods where to stay

In this section, you will find the best neighborhoods to stay in Philadelphia, and I will tell you which tourist attractions are in that area so that you can choose the one that is closest to what you want to see. Bear in mind, however, that the first four areas are very close to each other, so you can walk to all the tourist spots from any of them.

You will also find my recommended hotels in Philadelphia , which are where our friends and family usually stay when they visit us and can’t stay at our home.

1. Old City , one of the best places to stay in Philadelphia

Old City is the most historic area of the city. This is where the United States Declaration of Independence was written. The neighborhood is very beautiful and quiet, making it a great option to stay in Philadelphia for tourists.

If you decide to look for hotels in Philadelphia, Pennsylvani a here, you will be right next to many of its historical heritage sights, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House (where the first flag of the United States was sewn), and the National Constitution Center.

Since some of the main attractions of the city are here and it’s only a 15-minute walk from the center, Old City is one of the best areas to stay in Philadelphia. Of course, the prices are usually high and the accommodations fill up quickly, so I recommend booking well in advance.

Old City, where to stay in Philadelphia

These are the hotels in Philadelphia Old City that I recommend:

  • Premium option: Wyndham Philadelphia-Historic District
  • Standard option: Penn’s View Hotel Philadelphia
  • Low-cost option: Apple Hostels of Philadelphia

2. Center City , the best hotels in downtown Philadelphia

Center City is a good place to look for accommodations in Philadelphia for many reasons. The most important one is its perfect location for reaching the main points of interest in the city, such as the beautiful City Hall, which is where we got married.

The good thing about this area is that you can walk to almost any part of the city, and it’s also very well connected by public transport. This makes it one of the best places to stay in Philadelphia.

In Philly’s Center City, there are a lot of hotel deals but also most of the luxury hotels in Philadelphia , so the prices are quite high. You can also find cheaper accommodations, but you will have to book them well in advance because they are the ones that fill up first.

Downtown, hotels in center city Philadelphia

2. Center City , the best hotels in Philadelphia downtown

These are the hotels in Downtown Philadelphia that I recommend:

  • Premium option: Hampton Inn Philadelphia Center City-Convention Center
  • Standard option: The Notary Hotel Autograph Collection
  • Low-cost option: Philadelphia Marriott Downtown

3. Benjamin Franklin Parkway , a great area to stay in Philly

Benjamin Franklin Parkway is a good place to stay in Philadelphia because it’s very quiet and has many green areas. In addition, it is the most popular avenue in the city, starting at the City Hall and ending at the Museum of Art, where the Rocky Stairs and his statue are.

This area is also known as the Museum District because it’s where some of the most important and visited museums in Philly are. So if you’re into museums, I recommend looking for accommodation in this area.

From Benjamin Franklin Parkway, you can walk to downtown in about 20 minutes, so it’s a good place if you’re wondering where to stay in Philadelphia .

Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where to stay in Philly

These are the hotels that I recommend on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia:

  • Premium option: Embassy Suites Philadelphia – Center City
  • Standard option: Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown
  • Low-cost option: The Windsor Suites Philadelphia

4. Rittenhouse Square , luxury hotels in Philadelphia

Rittenhouse Square is the most exclusive area to stay in Philadelphia . It is right where the park that bears the same name is and where the most luxurious shopping centers and boutiques in the city are. You will also find quite glamorous restaurants to eat at.

In terms of Rittenhouse Square, I can tell you that it is one of the best areas to stay if you are looking for boutique hotels in Philadelphia, but it’s also one of the most expensive neighborhoods. We visit this area a lot because it’s perfect for disconnecting and relaxing. Plus, Philadelphia Center City is two blocks away, so you can always move around if you need more to do.

Rittenhouse Square, boutique hotels Philadelphia

Here is the list of hotels in Philadelphia, PA , located in Rittenhouse Square:

  • Premium option: Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square
  • Standard option: Club Quarters Hotel in Philadelphia
  • Low-cost option: Sonesta Philadelphia Downtown Rittenhouse Square

5. South Philly , cheap accommodation in Philadelphia

The South Philly area is not often chosen for stays, but I recommend it because it’s a safe place and the best option if you’re looking for cheap hotels in Philadelphia .

South Philly may not be the most popular area to stay in Philly , but it does have an artistic vibe that I love. In addition to that, the Italian Market, a must if you like pasta, is here.

Another of the places that I recommend you visit in the area is the Magic Gardens, which is one of my favorite corners of the city. Visiting them is not cheap but it’s worth it.

South Philly, places to stay in Philadelphia

Check out the hotels in South Philly that I recommend (they are in the South Philly area close to downtown. I don’t recommend you stay too far south):

  • Premium option: Modern Design / High-End 1BD Loft
  • Standard option: Sonder – The Queen
  • Low-cost option: Philadelphia Hotel Bella Vista

6. University City , a good neighborhood to stay in Philly

University City is an area where you can find good accommodation in Philadelphia, despite its being a bit isolated. It is on the other side of the Schuylkill River, which is one of my favorite walks in Philadelphia.

Two of the most distinguished universities in the US are in this area: the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. It’s a very popular area among students but not among tourists. Of course, it’s a good place to stay in Philly for nightlife.

However, it isn’t an area I usually recommend, since there are not many hotel on offer. But if you can’t find another place to stay in Philadelphia that fits your budget, University City can be a good alternative, especially for long stays. In this case, you will need to use public transport to get to the center city if you don’t want to have to walk for more than 40 minutes.

University City, one of the best neighborhoods in Philly

These are the hotels in Philadelphia that I recommend in University City:

  • Premium option: The Inn at Penn, A Hilton Hotel
  • Standard option: Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel
  • Low-cost option: The Study Hotel at University City

7. Fishtown , the area with the best nightlife in Philly

Fishtown is Philadelphia’s most popular party area, plus it’s where the city’s new culinary, artistic, and musical trends are born. It’s also considered the hipster neighborhood of Philly and is where artists spend much of their hours, especially on the first Friday of the month, which is when Frankford Avenue galleries and studios open to the public.

Although it’s an area that is somewhat removed from the center, you won’t have a problem getting to any part of the city by public transport. Of course, if you are looking for tranquility, it is not the best area to stay in Philly . Instead, stay in Fishtown if you’re looking for nightlife and want to indulge in trendy bistros, beer gardens, and indie bands.

Fishtown, Philadelphia accommodation

These are the hotels I recommend in the Fishtown, Philadelphia area:

  • Premium option: Mulherin’s Sons Hotel
  • Standard option: Lokal Hotel Fishtown
  • Low-cost option: Stylish 4 Bedroom House with Jacuzzi

8. Staying at the Philadelphia International Airport

I recommend looking for hotels near the Philadelphia airport if your flight departs very early. Also, it’s a good idea to stay close to the airport if you’re attending a sporting event or big concert, as the sports complex is nearby.

Despite all this, it’s a quiet and safe area where it is possible to find some of Philly’s cheap hotels . The only drawback is that there aren’t many tourist attractions nearby, and it’s far away from downtown.

Hotels outside of Philadelphia, USA

8. Around the Philadelphia International Airport

These are the best hotels to stay near the Philadelphia airport:

  • Premium option: DoubleTree by Hilton Philadelphia Airport
  • Standard option: Extended Stay America – Philadelphia – Airport – Tinicum Blvd.
  • Low-cost option: Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Philadelphia Airport

Philadelphia areas to avoid

As I have said before, Philadelphia is a fairly safe city despite its somewhat bad reputation, especially the areas frequented by tourists. Like all big cities, however, there are areas that it’s better to avoid, especially if you are going back to your hotel late at night.

Next, I will tell you the areas where not to stay in Philadelphia .

North Philly

The areas that are part of North Philadelphia are characterized by being quite poor, and, therefore, it is where the highest number of crimes is usually concentrated. I actually try to avoid even going through North Philly by car, so I wouldn’t walk there either.

It is a pretty run-down and abandoned area, so you really won’t miss much if you don’t visit it or if you choose a safer area to stay in Philadelphia .

Kensington Avenue

Kensington Avenue is like North Philly; it is a very poor area and a neighborhood where prostitution and drugs are a normal thing. It’s definitely not a place to stay in Philadelphia .

The best hotels in Philadelphia

If you don’t care about specific areas or prices, because all you want is to stay in one of the best hotels in Philadelphia , then check out the best Philadelphia luxury hotels :

  • The Rittenhouse Hotel , a prestigious hotel in downtown Philadelphia
  • The Ritz-Carlton , one of the most spectacular hotels in Philadelphia

Hi. I’m looking for an Airbnb or best accommodation in Philly walking or public transportation distance to Citizens Bank Par for Springsteen & E Street Band concert on August 23rd. I’m possibly looking for 2 nights, 7/22 & 23. Found some lovely Airbnb’s but unsure of area & neighborhood. Would appreciate advice.

' src=

Hi Kerri, There aren’t too many options in that area, but you can check out the Live! Casino & Hotel . It’s super close to Citizens Bank Park. If you’re looking at Airbnbs, consider Packer Park, Fitler Square, or Fairmount-Spring Garden.

I am planning to visit Thanksgiving weekend 2023, want to be centrally located and thinking about Center City maybe near Lowes or Roost, with the goal of visiting/walking/local transit/ to Old City, Center City East and West, as well as the Museum District and or Rittenhouse Square.

Is this the area I should be looking to stay in for convivence?

Hi Lyn, Yes, Center City is centrally located, so you can easily get to Old City, as well as walk to many museums, Rittenhouse, and other Philadelphia attractions. I say go for it!

I’m looking to come for a long weekend with a friend to catch some baseball and then head out for some food and beers. Where would you recommend?

Many thanks, Sid

Hi Sid, Old City has lots of interesting bars, pubs, and restaurant. Plus, you’ll be close to some historic Philadelphia attractions . 🙂

Hi! My family will be visiting Philly late June and we are looking to stay at an airb&b near Washington Square on Walnut St. Looking for advice on whether that area is safe and relatively quiet. We do not want to be around bars or nightlife. Thanks so much!

Hi Beth, This is one of the calmer places to stay in Philadelphia, and it has lots of local businesses and cafes. There aren’t too many bars, so your AirBnb should be pretty quiet. As for safety, you should be fine, although I don’t recommend roaming around in the nighttime hours.

Hello! My husband and Will be coming to Philly for one night Saturday to go the zoo n Sunday to a Phillies game where do u recommend we stay that is affordable n safe? TIA

Hi Cheryl, Check out Rittenhouse Square. It’s a safer neighborhood and has affordable accommodation options.

Hi there, I am hoping to travel to Philadelphia in July for a football (soccer) match that is taking place at Lincoln Financial Field. Just wondering where the best place would be to stay. Is the area around the stadium a good/safe place to stay, or would I be better off staying in, say, Center City and travelling by SEPTA to the NRG station? And is it safe to use the SEPTA at night? Many thanks.

Hi Martin, I would suggest staying in South Philly or by the airport. As for riding SEPTA at night, it’ll be safer if you’re in a group, but if you want an alternative, consider getting an Uber.

' src=

Will be going to the Met for a concert and Magic Gardens….mid July. I am a choice hotel member so I was looking at The Cambria? Is that a bad one? What would you suggest for a mid-range hotel?

Thanks, Suzanne

Hi Suzanne, The Cambria looks like a good choice, and it’s within walking distance of the Magic Gardens.

Hi there , I am planning a little vacation to Philadelphia with my husband. We will be seeing hockey game . But I want to be close to casinos , and fun ??? What do you recommend?

Hi Laura, I’m not sure about casinos in Philadelphia, but I recommend staying in Philly downtown. Let me know if you have any questions,

' src=

Hi! what’s your recommendation area for a long stay ( maybe a month or 2), I’m from south america, moving for work reasons.

I stayed in Manuyank the first two months when I moved to the US and I think it’s a great area for a long stay. Anyway, for a long stay, I recommend checking on Airbnb for cheaper prices. Here you can use our Airbnb coupon code.

' src=

What hotel is walking distance to the redding market?

Thank you!!

' src=

Any hotel at the center city is a good option. The best one is the Hampton Inn , but the Notary Hotel Autograph Collection and the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown are also great options.

Best hotels in Philadelphia

The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia

1.  The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia

  • Center City
  • price 4 of 4

Nothing says luxury like a stay at the five-star Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia. Originally built in 1904 as the Girard Trust Company, the building transitioned from a bank to a hotel at the turn of the century and opened as the Ritz-Carlton in 2000. The 299 guest rooms and suites boast views of either the city or historic City Hall and were meticulously redesigned and renovated using a color and textile palette inspired by modern currency—an overt nod to the building’s banking history. The hotel also features an impressive collection of art, which is displayed throughout the premises.

Where is it? Avenue of the Arts, Center City.

Which room? Plump for Club Lounge Access and get breakfast, snacks, hors d'oeuvres, dessert and non-alcoholic beverages included.

Time Out tip: Located steps away from Philadelphia City Hall, it'd be rude not to visit the magnificent Beaux Arts-style building. Tour its public rooms as well as the observation deck for a tremendous 360-degree view of the city.

The Rittenhouse Hotel

2.  The Rittenhouse Hotel

  • Rittenhouse

There’s something about Philadelphia that just makes you want to soak in the history. A stay at the 118-room Rittenhouse Hotel gives you just that opportunity. Originally a mansion owned by the Cassatt family, then the Episcopal Church of Pennsylvania’s headquarters and the Academy of Notre Dame, the Rittenhouse is a premium luxury hotel whose grandeur is unmatched. Opened in its current incarnation in 1989, it has a decades-long tradition of pampering guests with luxury Jaguar driver service, plush bathrobes at turndown time, and a host of amenities for children including complimentary in-room movies, popcorn for pre-teens and teenagers and a gift of choice from the Rittenhouse Treasure Chest for children ten and under. Like some others on our list, the Rittenhouse Hotel is a pet-friendly one that offers homemade treats prepared by the pastry chef for your pooch to enjoy.

Where is it? West Rittenhouse Square, Center City West.

Which room? Book a Park View room, you won't regret it.

Time Out tip: The onsite Rittenhouse Spa & Club is the bee's knees when it comes to relaxation. Check out treatments like the Quartet Massage, which gets not two but four hands up in the mix, or specialized treatments like lip smoothing.

AKA Rittenhouse Square

3.  AKA Rittenhouse Square

  • Boutique hotels
  • price 3 of 4

Choose from one of 78 studios and one and two-bedroom suites (with full kitchens) at the 12-story AKA Rittenhouse, available for both short and extended stays. The elegance of the building’s Beaux Arts facade extends indoors with sleek and modern furniture and appliances. Other perks include a gym, business center with Macs and a private resident entrance to onsite restaurant A.Kitchen.

Where is it? South 18th Street, Center City West.

Which room? Pretend you're a member of the upper echelons of society in the two-bed Penthouse Suite.

Time Out tip: Don't miss a trip to Independence National Park, which is just a 25-minute stroll, and the Victorian Philadelphia Zoo, just a ten-minute car ride.

Hotel Palomar

4.  Hotel Palomar

'Eco-friendly' is one of the buzzwords at Hotel Palomar, a Kimpton hotel located in an historic art deco building in Center City that was built in 1929. Whether making use of one of the custom-designed 'PUBLIC' bikes for a ride around town, taking a walk in Rittenhouse Square—which is just steps away—or stretching out on the yoga mat that is found in every room free of charge, you’ll love your stay at this trendy and comfy spot. Decor inside the 230-room hotel is jazzy and fun with a bit of local flair (see the colorful busts of Benjamin Franklin found in the lobby). Hotel Palomar isn’t just for you, either. As one of the city’s premier pet-friendly hotels, your pooch will be pampered with its own bed delivered right to your room, where they can relax with a treat while you unwind with a complimentary glass of wine.

Where is it? South 17th Street, Center City.

Which room? Fancy a sesh in a spa tub with a view of the Philly skyline? Book yourself a night in one of Palomar's King Premium suites.

Time Out tip: Explore the locality on foot or take the scenic route by hopping on one of the hotel's Kimpton bikes. We highly recommend a ride down the Schuylkill Bank trail.

Hotel Monaco

5.  Hotel Monaco

  • price 2 of 4

Hotel Monaco features the charming mix of history and modern attention to detail that have come to define the Kimpton chain. Decorated in a classic-yet-trendy style, this 268-room beauty opened in 2012 and offers guests free access to their 'PUBLIC' bikes, a complimentary yoga mat in every room and wine hours in the lobby Living Room each evening.

Where is it? Chestnut Street, Center City.

Which room? Book the King Premium Spa room for the addition of a large, vintage soaking tub. Glorious.

Time Out tip: The sky's the limit here. Get yourself up to the Stratus Rooftop Lounge ASAP to relax after sunset with an aperitif under the twinkling stars.

Lokal Hotel

6.  Lokal Hotel

  • Elfreth's Alley

In the mid-1860s, this Old City building served as a cap-making shop, but today it’s one of the city’s premier boutique hotels. It boasts six stunning rooms and 'invisible service', which essentially means check-in and out is all app-based and an in-room tablet and city guide offer enough support and suggestions for things to do in Philly. As for the rooms’ design: Jersey Ice Cream Co.’s modern-meets-industrial decor—characterized by rich pops of color in kitchen accoutrements and the furniture—offers just as much eye candy as it does sleek functionality. Rooms feature laundry, seating areas, full kitchens and more.

Where is it? North 3rd Street, Old City.

Which room? Despite being split over four floors, Lokal calls all their rooms 'lofts'. Betsy is the biggest (they all have human names) and comes equipped with a clawfoot tub.

Time Out tip: When you're not soaking in the tub or lounging in your cozy Lokal robe, you can head down to the National Liberty Museum, just a few steps away.

Wm. Mulherin’s Sons Hotel

7.  Wm. Mulherin’s Sons Hotel

Located above a wood-fired Italian restaurant of the same name, guests can book a stay in one of four refurbished suites, each with nods to the building’s 100-year-old history as a whiskey blending and bottling facility. Concrete floors have been polished and exposed brick nicely juxtaposes quirky wallpaper and wooden bed frames. Each room comes equipped with a full-sized kitchen, laundry and Apple TV. With a location right in the heart of Fishtown, you’ll never be more than a few feet away from great bars, some of the best coffee shops Philadelphia has to offer and top-notch eats.

Where is it? North Front Street, Fishtown.

Which room? They're all jaw-drop beautiful, so pick any one and you won't be disappointed.

Time Out tip: You won't be able to resist the smell of fresh dough wafting from the Italian-inspired restaurant downstairs and why would you? Don't miss out on a hearty wood-fired meal at this popular Fishtown joint.

The Dwight D. Hotel

8.  The Dwight D. Hotel

Though smaller than some others on the list, this eight-room spot includes two extended-stay apartments with kitchenettes and full baths, making it ideal for those enjoying longer visits. The Dwight has been in operation since its complete remodel in 2014 and prides itself on its history: the compact 1840s brownstone that houses it was the former home to the Eisenhower Fellowships organization. But don’t be fooled by its quaint size. The Dwight offers many of the amenities of larger hotels, such as 24-hour parking and use of bicycles through a bike-share program.

Where is it? South 16th Street, Center City West.

Which room? The Premium Queen comes with a balcony – all the better to admire views of the city and the private garden.

Time Out tip: Sandwiched between S. Broad St and Rittenhouse Square, this is the perfect spot for foodies. Or walk north to Walnut Street – Philly’s answer to New York City’s 5th Avenue.

ROOST East Market

9.  ROOST East Market

  • Center City West

These stylish, modern apartments feature fully equipped kitchens, laundry, walk-in rainfall showers, oak herringbone flooring, vintage Moroccan floor rugs and antique furniture. It’s the kind of curated, Instagram-worthy life we could only dream of. Suites are available in weekly or monthly stays and pets are welcome.

Where is it?  Ludlow Street, Center City.

Which room? The One-Bed Den offers plenty of space in which to sprawl, including an office, a lounge and dining area, plus two bay windows.

Time Out tip:  Look around outside for the heated pool, landscaped terraces, and community vegetable gardens.

The Logan Hotel

10.  The Logan Hotel

  • Parkway Museums

The Logan Hotel opened in 2015 on the site of the old Four Seasons. Be sure to enjoy a meal at the Urban Farmer, the hotel’s onsite farm-to-table steakhouse, then grab a nightcap at Assembly, the rooftop bar that makes you feel like you’re on an island in the middle of the city. The 391 rooms and suites are beautifully appointed and all either face the courtyard or the exquisite Swann Fountain in Logan Square.

Where is it? Logan Square.

Which room? The Bristol Suite boasts a fully outfitted kids’ room with bunk beds, a small play table and chairs, and comfy beanbag chairs. Plus views of Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Time Out tip: Do the scene from Rocky, you know the one, go on. Those famous steps are walking distance from The Logan.

The Sofitel Philadelphia

11.  The Sofitel Philadelphia

The Sofitel Philadelphia, which opened in 2000, proves that luxury can still be affordable. The lobby of this 306-room hotel is home to a carefully curated art gallery and is accented with locally inspired accouterments, such as colorful Shaker quilts and stone floors. Enjoy unique cocktails and one of Philadelphia's biggest collections of bourbons at Liberte Lounge or revel in the atmosphere of Chez Collette. Pamper yourself with the hotel’s indulgent lotions and soaps before a night out on the town and lose yourself in the superior featherbed and duvet sleep system when you return—just make sure you can pull yourself out of bed the next morning so you can get out to see some Philly attractions.

Where is it? South 17th Street, Center City West.

Which room? The suites come with 55" TVs with laptop connections and marble bathrooms with soaking tubs and Balmain toiletries.

Time Out tip: For those who want to make their breakfast-in-bed dreams a reality, take full advantage of in-room dining.

This National Historic Landmark was constructed in 1787 and retains its post-Revolutionary charm. Each of the 15 rooms vary style-wise between a more-updated feel and historical decor. Located near all the marvels of Old City, you’ll truly get the historic experience.

Where is it? South 8th Street, on the westside of Washington Square.

Which room? Room 102, the large extended suite in the Carriage House. It has a balcony overlooking St James Street and the formal gardens, a kitchenette and it sleeps up to four.

Time Out tip: Take full advantage of the freebies! These include 'grab and go' breakfast, freshly brewed Philly Fair Trade coffee and afternoon tea with cookies everyday from 3pm.

The Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square

13.  The Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square

Pairing modernity with classic architecture, the Warwick Hotel epitomizes the Rittenhouse vibe. Each of the 301 rooms feature a pop of color and personality with a Philly-themed headboard and refrigerator. If you want continued comfort without leaving the confines of the building, schedule an in-room spa service or head over to the hotel’s hair salon. If you do decide to leave, there is ample nearby shopping and dining. Bring your pup, too. The hotel is pet-friendly.

Where is it? S 17th St, on the eastside of Rittenhouse Square.

The birthplace of American independence, Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn. The name of the city translates to City of Brotherly Love and the city itself is a vibrant mix of history, art and culture.

Philly, as it is commonly called, is famous for its public art with more sculptures and murals than any other city in USA. Seeing the best graffiti and statutes won’t break the bank balance as you can join many free tours and admire them absolutely free of charge!

It’s also home to many national historical sites with the Independence National History Park as a starting point and centre for all the major landmarks, including the Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Liberty Bell is located, the symbol of the American Revolution.

Visit the world’s largest urban landscaped park, the Fairmount Park with over 37 km² of green area. There are plenty of paths and hiking trails and after that, enjoy some local specialities: a cheesesteak sandwich, a soft pretzel or some Tastykake snacks.

Arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, you’re only a 20-minute ride from the city centre. Booking.com offers a variety of hotels in downtown Philly, near the airport or for the sports enthusiasts, near the Wells Fargo Center.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

Travel Guide

  • # 1 in Best Day Trips from NYC

With its rich historical heritage, Philadelphia is one of the United States' most visited cities. After all, both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed here in  Independence Hall . Renaissance man Benjamin Franklin once called this city home. And before  Washington, D.C.  usurped its role, Philadelphia served as the country's capital. Yet the city is far from being stuck in its glorious past. The Philly of today is filled with notable museums, a bumping nightlife, beloved sports teams and a thriving restaurant scene that encompasses more than just the ubiquitous cheesesteak. Known as the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia is a vibrant and historic destination with a captivating blend of culture, art, and rich history. As the birthplace of American independence, the city attracts travelers from all walks of life and has diverse hotel offerings to match – from boutique gems in charming neighborhoods to luxurious accommodations in the heart of Center City. The city is an easy weekend trip from my home in New York City, and I’ve possibly spent more nights in Philadelphia’s best hotels than many locals. Let my expertise make wading through the choices easy for you – the traveler. My recommendations are based not only on the hotels' amenities, but also on their unique features, proximity to key landmarks, and overall quality of experience, helping you unlock the best of Philadelphia's hotel scene and ensuring an unforgettable stay in this dynamic city.

Wm. Mulherin's Sons Hotel

1355 North Front Street

$284-982/night

This one-of-a-kind gem is set in Philadelphia’s trendy Fishtown neighborhood. Housed in a restored whiskey blending and bottling warehouse, Wm. Mulherin’s Sons has just four rooms, but they all seamlessly combine its rich historic past with contemporary sophistication. Every detail here pays homage to the hotel’s industrial heritage, creating a rustic and inviting ambiance for guests. Beyond its stylish rooms, the hotel’s namesake restaurant offers an exceptional culinary experience. Renowned for its rustic Italian cuisine, wood-fired pizzas, and an extensive selection of craft cocktails, Wm. Mulherin’s Sons’ restaurant is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors alike thanks to pies like the Spicy Jawn, topped with pepperoni, hot coppa, caciocavallo, sharp provolone, long hots, and tomato. Moreover, the hotel’s location is ideal for exploring the surrounding area. Fishtown is known for its eclectic art scene, live music venues, independent boutiques, and a wide array of dining options.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

One North 19th Street

$691-2928/night

The Philadelphia Four Seasons is situated on the upper floors of the iconic Comcast Technology Center, one of the tallest buildings in the city and considered the jewel of the city’s skyline. Its grand architecture and floor-to-ceiling windows offer breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape – if you’re anything like me, you’ll be blown away by the 360-degree views from the 60th-floor sky lobby. But beyond its impressive facade, the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia boasts exceptional service, providing guests with a seamless and opulent stay from start to finish. The hotel’s 219 spacious and elegantly appointed rooms boast contemporary amenities, like Sodashi toiletries. Located right in the heart of the city’s financial district, it also offers easy access to corporate offices, convention centers as well as proximity to cultural landmarks like the Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia

433 Chestnut Street

$187-850/night

This enchanting boutique hotel in Philadelphia’s historic Old City district is housed in a striking building dating back to 1907. True to the Kimpton brand, Hotel Monaco has a whimsical and eclectic style that embraces bold colors, rich textures, and quirky elements and is also pet-friendly (one of my favorite facts about the hotel), a trademark of Kimpton hotels. Other notable Kimpton amenities – like the complimentary evening wine hours and loaner bikes – are available here. The on-site restaurant, Red Owl Tavern, focuses on farm-to-table cuisine and Philadelphia’s craft beer scene, with a rotating draft list of some local favorites. Meanwhile, the hotel’s prime location in Old City is within easy walking distance of some of Philadelphia’s most iconic landmarks, including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

The Notary Hotel, Philadelphia, Autograph Collection

21 North Juniper Street

$207-906/night

Initially built in 1926 as the City Hall Annex, the Notary Hotel is another Philadelphia property updated to showcase the city’s rich history. Formerly The Courtyard Philadelphia Downtown, The Notary’s architecture reflects the Renaissance Revival style, boasting an impressive marble staircase and a stunning, restored rotunda adorned with intricate details in the lobby. Almost all of the building’s original features – from majestic chandeliers and decorative moldings – have been preserved, creating a sense of grandeur and nostalgia that carries over to the Art Deco-infused rooms. Not surprisingly, dining at The Notary Hotel is a delight, too – the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Sabroso + Sorbo, serves up flavorful tapas and other Latin-inspired cuisine. Fun fact: The hotel’s name, “The Notary,” pays homage to the building’s history as the former City Hall Annex, where notary public services were once offered.

The Study at University City

20 South 33rd Street

$47-790/night

Known for its contemporary yet scholarly vibe, The Study at University City is a chic boutique and top-rated hotel in Philadelphia’s vibrant University City neighborhood. Designed to cater to the needs of both business and leisure travelers, The Study’s 212 rooms are thoughtfully designed to create a comfortable and productive space, featuring academic-inspired amenities like mini-libraries, and writing desks – unsurprisingly, given its university-centric location. Food isn’t an afterthought here either, as the popular CO-OP is focused on the best of East Coast cuisine, drawing on local ingredients and purveyors to recreate both classics like shrimp & grits and spin-offs like local black bass with roasted cauliflower and fennel in bell pepper emulsion. Since the hotel is so popular with university parents visiting their students, book earlier during peak dates like graduation.

The Inn at Penn, a Hilton Hotel

3600 Sansom Street

$41-1164/night

An ideal choice for parents visiting their college-bound children, academics attending conferences and travelers seeking academic charm and modern comfort, The Inn at Penn is a sophisticated, no-frills accommodation nestled within the vibrant University City neighborhood of Philadelphia. Guests can expect contemporary amenities across the hotel’s 248 rooms, including high-speed Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and spacious work desks. (Those looking to get a workout in while on the road will also appreciate the Peloton bikes in the fitness center.) In addition to Louie Louie, a French-inspired bistro, the hotel is also home to KPOD, a colorful and festive Stephen Starr restaurant known for hand rolls, Korean noodle dishes, and plenty of soju. While the hotel itself is peaceful and relaxing, its location also means easy access to the Penn Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and other Philly cultural landmarks.

Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square

120 South 17th Street

$180-1531/night

Located inside a modern tower, Sofitel successfully blends French and American design. The lobby sets the tone for this marriage of styles, with geometric-patterned marble flooring, vaulted ceilings, dramatic lighting, and artwork from local artists. Though some may find it too dark, the dimly lit room gives off a romantic vibe. The hotel’s restaurant, Chez Colette, emphasizes the French vibe with design accents such as wooden roller blinds and cozy yet chic banquettes. The hotel also features the charming Liberté Lounge, where you can watch expert mixologists concoct artisanal cocktails while dining on a menu of shareable small plates. Some might say the 306-room hotel is one of the buzziest in the city, and for a good reason – the Sofitel’s rooftop is home to more than 480,000 honeybees. The roof also houses a garden where organic vegetables and herbs are planted for use in the restaurants below.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia

117 South 17th Street

$172-819/night

A regular addition to Philadelphia’s “best of” lists, Kimpton’s Hotel Palomar is a stylish, artistic retreat with a dose of the sense of humor the City of Brotherly Love is known for. The hotel’s design showcases contemporary art – think three quirky, colorful Benjamin Franklin busts – and luxurious amenities, making it a favorite among art enthusiasts and luxury travelers. Meanwhile, the Palomar’s rooms are comfortable and eccentric, with a residential feel that makes the hotel feel more like a cool friend’s apartment. True to the Kimpton brand, the hotel’s living room lobby features a nightly wine hour, where guests can mingle and enjoy complimentary wine, and the hotel is extremely pet-friendly, with no size, weight, or breed restrictions. The hotel is also home to Square 1682, a New American restaurant known for its famous home-style jerk chicken and a vaunted cocktail menu.

The Westin Philadelphia

99 South 17th Street

$226-3885/night

Housed in a neoclassical building dating back to 1926, The Westin Philadelphia showcases a mix of historic charm and modern amenities, with easy access to the Pennsylvania Convention Center and other attractions, making it one of the best hotels to stay in Philadelphia. You can enjoy the signature Heavenly Beds Westin is known for and the brand’s well-known wellness initiatives, like the WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio. The rooms are spacious and contemporary, thanks to a brand-new renovation that touched all 294 rooms. A must-visit while you are there is the relaxed Lea Restaurant & Bar on-site that sources local ingredients and has a cocktail menu inspired by Philadelphia’s history and legacy. The location is steps from both Rittenhouse Square and Philadelphia City Hall.

The Maj Hotel

2225 Spring Garden Street

$154-599/night

The Maj Hotel is adjacent to the Oval and East Fairmount Park, offering a prime location to see some of the city’s sights, including the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art and the “Rocky” statue. The Maj Hotel, one of the top-rated hotels in Philadelphia, provides 26 air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen TVs, safes, designer toiletries, smart mirrors, and high-tech room controls. 24/7 front desk service and high-speed internet are also available. The guestrooms feature exposed red brick walls and floor-to-ceiling windows – a few rooms also have patios. On the ground floor, the Maj Cafe offers a great grab-and-go option for those who want to grab a coffee or pastry and head straight to the park, but if you’ve got some time, they offer a great weekend brunch.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia: 3 Best Areas + Coolest Hotels

Though we Americans often forget about it, opting to use our limited memory capacities to remember cities like Boston and New York in the stories about the origins of America, Philadelphia is actually probably the most important city in that story.

Most of the key events – including the Continental Congress that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and the group that wrote the Articles of Confederation and, later, the Constitution – took place in Philadelphia.

If you want to learn about American history around the time of the revolution and into the early republic, Philadelphia should be on your list.

I, Matt, visited Philadelphia on my own after spending some time together in Boston and New York City . I had a few extra days to spend, and was looking for somewhere that was easy to get to from New York, and Philadelphia quickly rose to the top of my list because of all the great American history that took place within just a few square blocks in Old City.

Ultimately, I enjoyed Philadelphia. It’s a compact city with tons of history, and I basically walked everywhere I needed to go from my place in Old City.

There were two areas that really stood out to me as deserving of the moniker of “best place to stay in Philadelphia” – Old City and the area right around Rittenhouse Square.

In this guide, I’ll cover those two areas in detail, plus a third area that would make a good compromise between them. I’ll give you the pros and cons of staying in each place, some neighborhood highlights that I enjoyed and think you might too, and a few hotel recommendations to get your search started.

Ultimately, I’m here to help you decide where to stay in Philadelphia, and I’m using my own experience to give you some insights that, hopefully, you find useful as you plan your own trip.

Sound good? Let’s get into the best areas to stay in Philadelphia.

PS: Planning a trip to Philly? We’ve got some other super detailed travel guides you might find useful. Where to Stay in Philadelphia: The 3 Best Areas to Stay in Philly

For each of the three areas we’ll cover below, we’ll give you all the information you need to decide which is the right neighborhood for you.

We’re strong believers that the best way to do it is to first pick the neighborhood you want to stay in, then pick a place within that neighborhood.

That’s what you’ll see below – we’ve organized this guide to first cover the neighborhoods, then recommend some cool places to stay within each neighborhood.

We’ll start with a brief overview of the neighborhood – where is it, what makes it special – before diving into a detailed list of the pros and cons of staying there.

Then we’ll give you some of the places we discovered that we enjoyed (and think you will too), and a few handpicked places to stay that stood out to us for one reason or another.

At the end of the day, you’re probably choosing between two neighborhoods here.

The center of Philadelphia – sandwiched between the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers – is relatively compact, which means there aren’t really a whole lot of options for tourists.

It comes down to whether you want to be closer to all the historical stuff (Old City), or closer to the better food and drink options (Rittenhouse Square).

Some guides will include places like University City – which is across the river to the west and is home to the University of Pennsylvania (you know it as “Penn”) and Fishtown , a gentrifying area north of Old City. For 99% of visitors to Philadelphia, we don’t think they’d make a good place to stay because they’re a little too far out.

If you’ve got three days or less in the city, we think you should try to stay somewhere that’s walkable to the main sights so you’re not spending all your time going back and forth between your hotel and the places you’re exploring.

The exception is if you’re visiting the University of Pennsylvania . Then it probably makes sense to stay over in University City near the campus.

Don’t have time to read the whole guide below? No worries. Here’s a summary to help you get your search started.

  • My overall recommendation is to stay within about two or three blocks of Rittenhouse Square , which is by far my favorite part of Philadelphia. It’s a little further away from Old City, where you’ll find tourist attractions like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, but it’s a neighborhood full of great places to eat and drink, and it’s central to most of the other places you’ll want to visit, including the three art museums that are a 15 minute walk to the north. Roost Rittenhouse Square is THE place to stay if you’re looking for a stylish, spacious apartment with amenities similar to a boutique hotel. There are also two stylish and affordable hotels here – the Hyatt Centric and the Motto by Hilton .
  • If you want to be in the middle of all the American Revolution history, stay in Old City , which is on the banks of the Delaware River on the eastern end of the city center. This is the historic city center of Philadelphia, dating back to colonial times, and is home to the vast majority of revolutionary history sites, which are all centered around Independence National Historical Park. The neighborhood to the east of that park is full of art galleries, restaurants, locally owned shops, and more, and is well worth walking around to explore. For a stylish apartment, stay at Lokal Old City , which is where I stayed and is in my top 5 best places I’ve EVER stayed. It’s not cheap, but the apartments are gorgeous, thoughtfully laid out, and have full kitchens, which I appreciated and used. For a hotel in a fantastic location right across the street from Independence Hall, stay at the Kimpton Monaco .

Rittenhouse Square: The Coolest Area in Philadelphia

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

The area around Rittenhouse Square was my personal favorite part of the city, and I found myself there every single day of my Philadelphia itinerary for one reason or another.

One day, it was to grab coffee at Elixr . Another day, it was to go to happy hour at Mission Taqueria .

This area is home to some of the best places to eat and drink in the city, which is why it sits at the top of my list of the best areas to stay in Philadelphia.

My travel philosophy can be summed up by “eat-walk-eat,” so it makes sense that this area would find its way to the top.

While I decided to stay in Old City instead, I found myself slightly regretting that decision because I enjoyed this area so much.

Not only is it a great place to eat and drink, but the location is nice and central to most of Philadelphia’s attractions (with the exception of Old City, which is a 15 minute subway ride or taxi away).

To the north, you’ll find the city’s three main art museums, which are about a 15 minute walk from the park.

As you venture west, you’ll first find yourself in the midst of the cute row houses that are emblematic of the east coast (we don’t have those on the west coast), and then you’ll arrive at the Schuylkill River.

To the east is Reading Terminal Market and, further away, Old City.

And about four blocks south is South Street, which you can follow east to Jim’s , which was the local pick for the best Philly Cheesesteak in town (TWO different people I met recommended it).

Between the great food and drinks, and the central location that means you’ll be able to walk to almost everything in Philadelphia, this place deserves its spot at the top of our list of the best places to stay in Philadelphia.

Plus, it has some pretty cool hotels, too!

Pros and Cons of Staying near Rittenhouse Square

Pros of staying near Rittenhouse Square

  • Rittenhouse Square is lovely . The centerpiece of this part of the city is going to be Rittenhouse Square, which is a pleasant spot to spend a sunny morning or afternoon people watching and basking in the sun. Unless, of course, it’s summer, in which case you’re probably going to be seeking out the cover of the trees.
  • Great food and drinks . From restaurants to bars to coffee shops, this area is packed with some of Philly’s best places to eat (outside of South Philly), mostly because they cater to the office workers that spend their days nearby.
  • Walkable to the museums . You’ll be within walking distance of the trio of art museums on the northern edge of Center City. We probably wouldn’t spend all of your time in a museum, but it’s worth choosing one (we’d go with either the Rodin Museum or the Graves Foundation) and spending a few hours on it.

Cons of staying near Rittenhouse Square

  • It’s (relatively) far from Old City . Most of Philadelphia’s historical sights are on the eastern side of Center City, and Rittenhouse Square sits on the western side. It’s going to take 30 minutes to walk between them. Which, all things considered, is actually not that bad compared to places like New York City.
  • It’s expensive . This area is one of the most desirable locations in the city, so as you might imagine, prices are high. Philadelphia is a relatively affordable city compared to Boston or NYC, but if you’re on a tight budget, you’ll probably need to look elsewhere (like to the Center City).

Highlights Around Rittenhouse Square

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Rittenhouse Square : A very, very pleasant square block in the middle of Philadelphia’s towering office buildings with a burst of greenery in a concrete jungle. I found myself here multiple times, basking in the warm sun during my trip in the middle of spring, though the trees would probably be more useful for shade in the sweltering summer months.

Mission Taqueria : Go for the churros with chocolate and dulce de leche dipping sauces. Stay for the cauliflower tacos with peanut salsa. Or the guacamole. Or the $6 margaritas during happy hour (4:00 – 6:00 pm, Tuesday to Friday).

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Elixr Coffee : My favorite coffee in Philadelphia came from this spot, tucked away in an alley a couple of blocks from Rittenhouse Square. They’re one of the OG coffee roasters in the city, operating since 2010 before the specialty coffee wave really hit its stride in the United States. They’re all about the light roasts, which bring out the brighter flavors in the coffees they release, which aligns perfectly with my preferences. They have pour over options, different espresso-based drinks, cold brew, and some fun specialty seasonal drinks.

Ultimo Coffee : Another great coffee roaster near the park, this time a block west of Rittenhouse Square. Their chai is fantastic.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

The Rodin Museum : The Rodin Museum in Paris is probably our favorite museum in the city, which is packed full of way too many amazing museums to try to fit into a couple of days of visiting. This one is similar – it follows the life and work of Auguste Rodin, the French sculptor who is most famous for the Thinker, but was a pioneer in exploring the curves and contours of the human body through his sculptures. I was confused as to how they have a copy of the Thinker and Gates of Hell too, which we saw in Paris, but apparently there are multiple versions out there, including the ones here.

The Best Places to Stay near Rittenhouse Square

Here are three of the best places to stay in Philadelphia near Rittenhouse Square, including a nice apartment hotel and two solid mid range hotels.

Roost Rittenhouse Square: A Cross Between a Boutique Hotel & Apartments

I had a room booked at Roost Rittenhouse Square , but ultimately decided that I cared more about being close to the stuff in Old City, so I decided to cancel my stay and stay at Lokal Old City instead.

Roost is a great concept that combines the benefits of staying in a boutique hotel – a concierge who can help you plan your trip, high end bath products, comfy beds – and the comfort of staying in an apartment – like a full kitchen and more space to spread out.

We’ve stayed at multiple places like this over the past couple of years in London, Madrid, NYC, and Paris, and one thing we’ll say is that it’s important to have a 24/7 front desk in case anything comes up. This place has that!

The apartments themselves are very, very spacious (especially for the price). Like we touched on above, they all have full kitchens with nice appliances and all the cookware you’ll need, and each unit has a full washer and dryer (though, they note, no detergent).

They come in a couple of different layouts to accommodate different group sizes – studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom.

The studio apartments, which clock in at more than 500 square feet (which is HUGE), are plenty of space for solo travelers and couples, while the one and two bedroom apartments have more space for groups.

The beds are consistently rated as super comfortable (9.0+ rating from people who have stayed there), bath products are from Davines MOMO , coffee is from local La Colombe , and you’ll have a 4k TV with Apple TV that can be used to stream to your heart’s content.

The building is two blocks north of Rittenhouse Square, which is a nice location because all the bars and restaurants around Rittenhouse are within walking distance, and so are the museums that are up to the north.

It’s a 15 minute walk from Roost Rittenhouse to the Rodin Museum, for example, and about five minutes more to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and the Rocky Statue).

If they don’t have availability for your dates, they have another location that is very similar in terms of price, amenities, style, and location called Roost Midtown .

It’s a few blocks east, which is a less charming location, but still close enough to the square and all the stuff nearby.

One note : It is pet-friendly, but there can be up to a $350 cleaning fee for pets, which kind of seems cost-prohibitive. Cats and dogs only, dogs must be under 40 pounds. Leave your Great Danes at home!

Hyatt Centric Center City: Affordable Option in a Great Location

This place is NICE for a Hyatt. I’m not sure why I have the idea that Hyatt hotels aren’t all that cool or unique in my head, but the pictures of this stylish and affordable hotel blew away my expectations.

Then, I did more research, and the “Hyatt Centric” brand is their version of a hip, boutique hotel, which makes total sense.

The rooms at this affordable hotel are both huge and stylish (the standard King room is 300 square feet, which is massive by modern hotel standards), with lots of natural light and light wood tones throughout, and guests who have stayed there have rated the beds as a 9.2 in terms of how comfortable they are at the time of writing.

Some rooms have city views, though it’ll cost you a little extra to reserve those.

The location of the hotel is great too – it’s a block and a half east of Rittenhouse Square, and a block and a half west of Elixr Coffee, the best coffee shop in Philadelphia in my humble opinion.

When it comes to amenities, it’s fairly basic in terms of what you’re going to get. They have a fitness center, meeting rooms, and an onsite bar and restaurant.

Pets are allowed – dogs under 50 lbs (or multiple dogs under 75 lbs total) – though there’s a $100 fee for stays of one to six nights…which is honestly probably far less than you’d pay to have a dog sitter for two to three nights.

For the price, this is an excellent option right near Rittenhouse Square, which is one of our favorite parts of downtown Philadelphia.

Important note : They have an extra 0.75% resort fee that you’ll need to pay on arrival. We HATE these silly fees – they should absolutely be built into the cost of the room – but figured we’d call it out so you’re not blindsided when you show up!

Motto by Hilton Rittenhouse Square: A Stylish Mid Range Hotel Two Blocks from the Park

Similar to the “Hyatt Centric” brand, the Motto by Hilton brand is all about bringing a younger, hipper energy to Hilton hotels.

That means smaller rooms with lots of techy amenities (connected TVs, the ability to control room temperature and lighting through an app, etc.), and local art, hip bars and restaurants, and more.

One of the things that made me include this hotel is their innovative room layouts. While they definitely have the usual room styles, their double rooms – rooms with two beds – feature twin bunk beds, which is a more efficient use of space.

It’s definitely not for all travelers, but if you’re a small group on a budget, I think it’s a cool idea.

They also have bunk beds with a double on the bottom and a twin on top, which would be perfect for families with kids. They also have bigger “studios” with more space (300+ square feet) that can comfortably sleep three to four people.

They have a rooftop taqueria – two words I didn’t think I needed to see together until…now – called El Techo (which seems like a lovely place for a margarita with a skyline view) and a couple of other onsite Mexican-inspired restaurants and cafes.

Parking here will cost you $35 a night (valet), with unlimited in/out privileges in a secure covered garage, which makes this a solid option if you have a car.

There’s also a fitness center with weights and a Peloton bike, if you’re trying to get in a workout during your trip.

No pets allowed here.

The rooms are small, but the tech-enabled rooms are well-thought out, and if you’ve got a short trip, small rooms won’t be too much of an issue because you’ll be out and about exploring anyway.

Old City: Historic and Charming

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Old City is both a neighborhood, and the location of the original settlement of Philadelphia. Perched on the western bank of the Delaware River across from the New Jersey border, Old City is where the vast majority of history related to the American Revolution lives today.

Since then, the city expanded west, swallowing the entirety of the land between the Delaware and the Schuylkill Rivers.

Old City is tourist central in Philadelphia, but that doesn’t automatically make it a bad place to stay.

In fact, I stayed here, and would do it again if given the chance (though I’d probably opt for Rittenhouse Square, to be honest, for its proximity to the coffee shops and restaurants I liked).

Its charming, tree-lined streets, and quintessential red brick buildings make it a very pleasant place to stay, and you’ll find yourself within a couple of blocks of some of the most important places in early American history.

The biggest downside is that it’s not particularly interesting in terms of food and drinks (though that’s a generalization, and doesn’t mean that there are ZERO good places to eat or drink).

However, it’s an easy walk or bus ride down to South Philly or up to Fishtown, where you’ll find more interesting food options.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Old City

Pros of staying in Old City

  • It’s charming . Red brick buildings. Cobblestone streets. Independence Hall. This is the oldest part of the city, and it shows. It has been revitalized in the past few decades, when local artists moved into the dilapidated formerly industrial area, bringing a variety of businesses along with them to support the growing artist community.
  • Revolutionary history is on your doorstep . As Hamilton would say – at least Lin Manuel Miranda’s iteration – if you want to be in the room where it happened, this is it. If you stay here, you’ll be within a few blocks of where the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, the original building where Congress met in the early days of the republic, and Ben Franklin’s mansion and final resting place.

Cons   of staying in Old City

  • It’s far from the western end of the city . Places like Rittenhouse Square, the Rocky Statue, and the art museums near the Schuylkill River will be a little bit of a trek, and likely require some form of public transportation or rideshare to get to. However, keep in mind that unless you stay in the Center City (which we’ll talk about below), you’re going to have the opposite issue if you stay on the other end of the city.
  • There’s not a whole lot of places to eat and drink . This is a generalization, sure, but for the most part, the dining scene in Philadelphia happens to the south and west of Old City. A good rule of thumb when traveling is that eating within a couple of blocks of a major tourist attraction is a bad idea. With a few exceptions, that holds true here.

Old City Highlights

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Here are a few places in Old City that I enjoyed, and think you might too.

The Museum of the American Revolution : I loved this museum. I didn’t get a chance to go inside the replica of General Washington’s tent because there were, quite literally, 300 school kids who were waiting in line, and the employee warned me that it might be a little hectic. I decided to pass. But the rest of the museum is amazing, starting with a quick video about the revolution, which it argues is an idea rather than a historical event. Then they take you through the history, bit by bit, with a bunch of personal anecdotes from primary sources, like privates in both armies, who give you an idea of what it was really like. It’s an excellent museum, and is probably a must-visit in Philly If you’re into Revolutionary history.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Independence Hall & Plaza : This is lumping together a few different sights, the most famous of which is the Liberty Bell, which is honestly a little disappointing (and, objectively, not a very good bell since it had to be recast twice AND still cracked again). But that’s almost a better symbol of the American project – the promise of the Declaration of Independence that cracked when the time came to actually govern. The main attraction is Independence Hall, which you can only enter by booking a tour in advance.

Menagerie Coffee : The best coffee in the neighborhood, I went to this place a couple of times, including on my first morning in Philadelphia. They use Dogwood Coffee (from Minneapolis) and Elixr (from Philadelphia) and make some great coffee. The interior of this place is also way bigger than it appears from the outside, with plenty of room for getting some work done or reading a book in a quiet corner.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Shopping on 3rd Ave N : My hotel was on 3rd Ave, so I spent a good deal of time walking up and down the street enroute to various stops on my Philadelphia itinerary. I was constantly surprised at the great boutiques lining the street. There was a cocktail / mixology shop – Art in the Age – right outside my front door, and a cool design shop with a focus on Japanese goods down the street ( Omoi ). If you’re looking for some unique shopping, head here.

The Best Places to Stay in Old City

Here are a couple of places to stay in Old City, including where I stayed for my trip to Philadelphia.

Lokal Hotel Old City: Gorgeous Apartments (Where I Stayed)

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

I stayed at this relatively new mini apartment-hotel for my stay in Philadelphia, and while it was a little bit of a splurge, I think it was worth every penny for what I needed from it.

I was in Philadelphia for a few days on my own, and I was planning on getting some work done from the apartment, and cooking for myself a little bit.

What drew me in was their philosophy and story, which resonated with me, a traveler who tries to make it to every single farmers market, coffee shop, and offbeat neighborhood in whatever city I’m visiting.

Keeping that in mind, this is Lokal’s thesis: “We like design, feeling at home and doing what the locals do when we travel. We like a bit of space to stretch our legs, to whip up a quick meal and mix a quality cocktail. We also like good coffee and nice towels, sheets and always a great robe.”

I mean, how could I say no?

The building itself is in the heart of Old City, roughly three or four blocks from Independence Hall, and it’s small – just six apartments. The apartments are very spacious, and they range from studios to two bedrooms.

They’re all named after famous names in Philadelphia’s history – I stayed in “Ben”, named after Ben Franklin.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Inside the room, you’ll find a remarkable combination of comforts. The bed is easily in the top three most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in (outside of my own) thanks to a Casper mattress and Parachute sheets.

Rooms are spacious – my studio was 450 square feet, which is pretty huge compared to your average hotel room – and are equipped with Apple TV to stream your heart out (either watching Apple TV+ or using AirPlay from your devices).

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

And, of course, the coffee. They have packets of coffee that you can brew either using the coffee machine, or the Chemex that they provide (with filters). The tea selection was also nice to have – I enjoyed a nice cup of honey ginger tea every evening before bed.

The best part, at least for me, was the kitchen. An induction cooktop, all the pots, pans, and cooking utensils you could possibly need, PLUS a whole cabinet full of spices.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

If you’re looking to live like a local for a few nights, this would be a great place to stay in Philadelphia.

Kimpton Monaco: Nice Hotel Across the Street from Independence Hall

The number one selling point of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco is the fact that it is literally across the street from Independence Hall, so you’re right in the middle of all the action. At least in terms of the Revolutionary History side of Philadelphia.

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Kimpton hotels are generally very nice, and this one is no different. Blue tones dominate the rooms, and they have a couple of different layout options, depending on how you’d like to travel.

Basic rooms are 215 square feet – about average – with double beds, and bigger rooms with multiple queen beds are also available for a slight upcharge.

If you stay here, you’ll have access to their PUBLIC bikes to cruise around town, and a nice fitness center.

However, here’s one thing we HATE. The WiFi isn’t free unless you’re an IHG One Rewards Member. Did we just transport back in time to 1999? How is free WiFi not a must-have for any modern, self respecting hotel?

Anyway, the summary here is that it’s a great location, the rooms are comfortable, and you’ll have to fork over a few bucks for WiFi if you need it.

Center City: Budget-Friendly and Central, but Relatively Boring

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Center City is on this list because it’s smack dab in the middle of it all. West is Rittenhouse Square, north is the museums, east is Old City, and south is South Street and all the bars and restaurants along that stretch.

However, I will say that Center City itself isn’t really anything special. Sure, it has Reading Terminal Market and Philadelphia City Hall, but other than that, I’m not sure why you’d find yourself here other than walking through it to get somewhere else.

For the purposes of this guide, when I say “Center City,” I’m talking about the area sandwiched between Old City and S Broad Street. It’s southeast of City Hall and east of S Broad Street, and south of Reading Terminal Market. To the west is Old City and Washington Square.

The selling points are the central location, and the fact that there are a lot of places to stay, which means relatively affordable prices.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Center City

Pros of staying in Center City

  • It’s central . Go figure, the Center City is central. Thanks, Matt, super helpful advice! But I’m serious – the biggest advantage of staying here is that you’re going to be conveniently located between Old City and Rittenhouse Square / museums.
  • Reading Terminal Market . Though I think it’s a little hit and miss in terms of individual stands within the market, it’s undeniable that this indoor food hall is a must-see in Philly, and it’ll be right on your doorstep.
  • Lots of choices . There’s a lot of hotels in this part of the city, from basic chain hotels like the Holiday Inn, to more upscale options.
  • It’s affordable . The combination of the fact that there are a lot of hotels to choose from and the fact that it’s sandwiched between two of the more desirable areas in the city means that this is actually a fairly affordable area to call home for a few days.

Cons of staying in Center City

  • It’s relatively uninteresting . I walked from my hotel in Old City over to Rittenhouse Square and back multiple times over the course of my time in Philadelphia, which means I walked right through this area a bunch. I took the northern path, skirting the northern end of City Hall. I did the same thing on the southern side. Not once did I find any part of this area that made me say “now this is interesting.” If you stay here, plan on spending most of your time elsewhere.

Center City Highlights

philadelphia hotels near tourist attractions

Reading Terminal Market : This is an indoor food hall with a huge collection of vendors, most selling ready-to-eat food, with a few places selling packaged food, produce, meats, and cheeses sprinkled in. I’m a big, big fan of Fox and Son and their delicious corn dogs and funnel cakes (which also happen to be gluten free). This is a great spot for lunch, especially with a group where people want to try different spots (and, ideally, you all share between you!).

Cogito Coffee : How did a Croatian coffee brand end up in Philadelphia? I had the same question. They have locations over in Croatia, and then one in Philly because the guy who opened the Philadelphia location – who has Croatian heritage – decided it would be cool to bring it to Philadelphia.

This U.S. Destination Is the Country’s First UNESCO World Heritage City

Discover the best hotels, restaurants, and things to do with this highly curated Philadelphia travel guide.

Best Hotels

Things to do, best shopping, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, neighborhoods to know, how to get around.

rabbit75_ist/Getty Images

With its rich history and a food scene that just keeps getting better, a trip to Philadelphia can be a real treat.

It's the nation's first UNESCO World Heritage City (because both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed here) and is the perfect destination for anyone enthusiastic about the birth of the United States. Stop by Independence National Historic Park to learn all you can about the country's founding, and wear your red, white, and blue with pride on Independence Day at the Wawa Welcome America Festival, the largest July 4 celebration in the county.

Foodies can stop by South Philly Barbacoa for delicious slow-cooked lamb or pop into Vedge, a restaurant that works "magic with vegetables," according to Cara Schneider Bongiorno, the founder of Philly History Pops Ups and former media relations director at Visit Philadelphia. Those looking to take their own ingredients home will love the 9th Street Italian Market, which sells everything from artisanal cheeses to pastries.

When you visit Philadelphia, you're visiting a city that feels gravid with its history in a way that some equally storied cities don't quite manage. There's a lot about the city of brotherly (and sisterly) love to, well, love.

Four Seasons Philadelphia at Comcast Center

One of Travel + Leisure's best new hotels in 2020 , the Four Seasons Philadelphia brings modernity to this historic city. Home to fine-dining options from award-winning chefs, an infinity-edge pool on the 57th floor, and "luxe accents, from dazzling arrangements by celebrity florist Jeff Leatham to the sparkling spa, whose walls are embedded with healing crystals," as T+L previously reported , this hotel is one of the most luxurious stays in the area. Schneider Bongiorno told T+L that "the glass elevator up to the sky-high lobby is a total thrill. (But, look the other way if you don't  like  that kind of thrill.)"

The Rittenhouse

A luxurious hotel alongside Rittenhouse Square, The Rittenhouse combines timeless luxury with modern amenities in a sophisticated balance. Family friendly and centrally located, the hotel is a classic luxury experience from decor to amenities. "Drink in the stately old vibe of Rittenhouse Square in the Library Bar, tucked away in the far side of the lobby," Schneider Bongiorno added.

Lokal Hotel Fishtown

If you're looking for an experience that isn't quite as rote as a standard hotel, consider Lokal Hotel , an apartment hotel comprised of six thoughtfully curated studio suites. With an excellent location and a true home-away-from-home feel, this Fishtown favorite is in high demand during the height of tourist season.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia

A few streets over is Hotel Monaco's sister, Hotel Palomar , an equally gorgeous but somewhat more serene stay. If Hotel Monaco is color and texture, Hotel Palomar is muted and calm, a true oasis away from the bustling Center City.

Hotel Suites at the Touraine

The Touraine is actually a historical landmark apartment building, and prospective residents jostle for the opportunity to move in permanently any time there is an opening. Lucky for us, The Touraine has several "travel apartments," gorgeously decorated suites that can be rented for short-term stays by visitors.

Independence National Historical Park

This park contains the Liberty Bell and rubs shoulders with Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The park itself has played host to suffragettes, civil rights leaders, and more, gathering to protest for expanded rights and liberty for all. Cara Schneider Bongiorno recommends that tourists pick the tour or park location that they find most interesting, but to "listen with the mindset of how  radical  the founding of the United States was when there wasn't a country in the world that chose to let the people govern."

Barnes Foundation

A museum with a stunning collection, including works by Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, Modigliani, and more. On display is also a selection of Native American arts and textiles, African sculpture and arts, and an arboretum replete with rare plants.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is, most importantly, home to the "Rocky steps" — the staircase Rocky Balboa ran up in his self-titled film. (You can run up them, too, and don't forget to take a picture at the top.) In addition to that unbeatable cultural icon, the Philadelphia Museum of Art features works by Mary Cassatt, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keefe, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, and many more.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Built in the Gothic architectural style, this decommissioned prison once housed Al Capone and is allegedly one of the most haunted places in America. These days, Eastern State Penitentiary is a nonprofit dedicated to educating and exploring the history of American criminal justice reform. The Penitentiary offers regular tours and exhibits and, around Halloween, partially transforms into a haunted house.

Philadelphia Zoo

Opened in 1874, the Philadelphia Zoo is devoted to conservation and education through experiences with animals. With more than 1,300 animals, it's easy to spend an entire day here, enjoying the company of giraffes, rhinos, chimpanzees, and more. Schneider Bongiorno recommends guests "look up and watch for animals as they wander through the overhead trail system."

Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Market is one of America's oldest and largest markets, continuously operating since 1893 and home not only to specialty and grocery shops but bars and restaurants. Here, you'll find not only fresh ingredients but the tools to make a delicious meal: kitchenware, linens, cookbooks, and more. Reading Terminal Market has "so much food to choose from. It's the ultimate place to get a taste of Philly as a tourist," said Kurt Evans, chef, activist, partner of  CYL Hospitality Group , and founder of  EMI Dinner and  Everybody Eats . "Whenever I go, [I visit] Ma Lessie's Chicken & Waffles and get the fried fish and cabbage."

9th Street Italian Market

This 100-year-old community space has a rich history of immigrant families, and part of its mission is to continue to foster and build the community that first began over a century ago. When you shop here — and shop here you should, for fresh and delicious cheeses, baked goods, flowers, seafood, vintage finds, and everything else you can think of — you're part of a century-old tradition.

Jeweler's Row

Established in 1851, Jeweler's Row is historically specific to, well, jewelry, but has branched out a bit in recent years to include swanky restaurants and salons. While it's a perfect place to find a one of a kind gem (literally) for yourself or as a gift, Jeweler's Row is fun to explore even if jewelry isn't on your shopping list.

Uncle Bobbie's Coffee and Books

This beloved Philadelphia institution lives by the motto "Cool People. Dope Books. Great Coffee." and lives up to all three of those promises. With a fun and eclectic event schedule, a thoughtfully curated selection of books, and a seriously delicious cafe, Uncle Bobbie's should be top of the list for any visitor with a love of books, coffee, or cool people.

Zahav , named an outstanding restaurant by the James Beard Foundation in 2019 and labeled as the best restaurant in America by T+L that same year, is Israel-born chef Michael Solomonov's first restaurant in Philadelphia (he now owns nine). Guests are treated to a five-course prix-fixe menu, which includes delicious breads and mezzes, a choice of entrée (try the famous pomegranate lamb shoulder), and ends with dessert. The meal costs $75 per person, and you will need to make reservations well in advance.

JG Skyhigh Lounge

If the $200 prix-fixe menu at Jean Georges Philadelphia isn't for you, head upstairs to the 60th floor of the Four Seasons Philadelphia where you'll find the JG Skyhigh Lounge . The lounge is Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first a la carte restaurant in Philadelphia and offers snacks and small plates. Sip on a cocktail, like a lychee raspberry bellini, at the bar, and soak in the incredible view.

Suraya is a Lebanese eatery with a cult following in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood. If you don't have your heart set on something specific, definitely go for the tasting menu — at $75 for two people, it's a great option to taste an abundance of what Suraya has to offer. "Don't miss the Lebanese chai latte made with salep , or orchid powder, and topped with pistachios and rose petals," T+L editors have previously recommended . "It's exactly the right amount of sweet and, devastatingly, impossible to replicate at home."

Laser Wolf is one of the best Middle Eastern meals in all of Pennsylvania, and the three-course prix-fixe menu is a must-try (prices start at $37). Also created by chef Michael Solomonov, Laser Wolf's best dishes are its traditional ones, like savory kebabs, whole branzino on the grill, and braised short ribs. "This is how people in Israel actually eat," Andrew Henshaw, the executive chef of Laser Wolf, previously told T+L , "It's like the pub in England or the diner in America." They are known for their excellent cocktail pairings, too.

Luscious, seasonal vegan and vegetarian dishes are given the star treatment at this former mansion . Come ready for fresh vegetables, house-made pickles, and a shifting menu that gives you a unique experience with every visit.

South Philly Barbacoa

One word: tacos. South Philly Barbacoa is a roaming pop-up that appears in cities nationwide, but lives in Philadelphia full-time. Their pop-ups elsewhere sell out almost immediately, and there is almost always a line at the Philly location, but it's worth it. "The unusual hours for chef and activist Cristina Martinez's South Philly Barbacoa (open Saturdays and Sundays, from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. or sellout, and Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or sellout) are due to the time it takes to slow-roast the lamb," Schneider Bongiorno said. Kurt Evans also gave a glowing review of the lamb, and said that the dish itself is "worth a trip to Philly" for. Cash only.

The best time to visit Philadelphia is from March to May when temperatures are mild and crowds are small. Spring brings many fun events to the city, including the Philadelphia Flower Show , the U.S.'s largest flower show that takes place every March, and the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, where you can celebrate Japanese culture through food and music every April.

If you're comfortable with higher temperatures and larger crowds, you can visit in the summer to experience the city's Pride March and Festival , Juneteenth Festival , and the Wawa Welcome America Festival , the largest July 4 celebration in the county.

If you can brave the winter chill, you can enjoy the city's many holiday decorations and events. " The Christmas Village in Philadelphia is probably the closest you can get to an authentic German Christmas market in the U.S.," T+L contributor Skye Sherman said previously . "Enjoy thousands of twinkling lights and the heartwarming scent of waffles, gingerbread, and bratwurst in the air — best washed down with a cup of hot mulled wine."

Read More : The Best Times to Visit Philadelphia for Fun Events, Fewer Crowds, and Beautiful Weather

You can fly into Philadelphia International Airport from over 140 different destinations and on every major U.S. airline. Once you arrive, hop on the SEPTA Airport Rail Line — it'll take you north to Center City and beyond, depending on where you need to be.

If you're visiting from the Northeast, you can opt to take the train to the city instead of flying in — Amtrak offers two lines that run through Philadelphia, the Keystone Service route , which runs from New York to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and the Acela route , which runs from Boston to D.C.

Center City : Center City could be considered the main hub of Philadelphia in the way that Times Square is the most iconic area of New York. It's home to some of the city's most iconic attractions, including the Liberty Bell, Barnes Foundation, Independence Hall, and Franklin Institute — as well as some of Philadelphia's top hotels . "Numbered streets run north to south and tree or named streets run east to west." Cara Schneider Bongiorno says, "The river trails on each side (scenic Schuylkill on the West; bustling Delaware on the East) are worth a walk or run as well."

Logan Square: Center City is broken up into smaller neighborhoods, and Logan Square is one of these. Home to the Barnes Foundation and the Franklin Institute, Logan Square is also where you'll find the iconic LOVE sculpture — if you're going to Philadelphia, a selfie with this sculpture is the ultimate in gotta-do-it cheesy-fun tourist experiences.

Rittenhouse Square : Located within Center City, Rittenhouse Square is one of Philadelphia's most fashionable neighborhoods. If your interest is in chic shopping and high-profile restaurants, make your way to this beautiful, idyllic enclave of Philadelphia's bustling heart. Walnut Street, the heart of the neighborhood, features art galleries, fashion boutiques, and spas. Cara Schneider Bongiorno recommends tourists "stroll through or people watch from the sidewalk cafés on 18th Street."

Fishtown : Fishtown is by far the coolest of Philadelphia's many neighborhoods. Formerly a working-class neighborhood home to — you guessed it – sailors and fishermen, Fishtown has become an enclave of creative, youthful energy. Trends in fashion, art, and food start here, and this is the place to be for the trendiest bars, restaurants, and nightlife. "Notice the decorative fish everywhere," Cara Schneider Bongiorno says.

Transit in Philadelphia is maintained by SEPTA , which runs trains, buses, and trolleys. These are all paid for either through SEPTA's Travel Wallet program and a SEPTA Key card, or with cash in hand. You can reload your card at one of the many SEPTA kiosks, which accepts cash, credit, debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. SEPTA is in the process of a five-year transportation revitalization program called SEPTA Forward . With this program, the transit company hopes to create a unified and equitable transit network. Download the SEPTA app for on-the-go access to schedule information, fare options, and more.

Trains: Philly's rapid transit system combines subway lines, buses, and trolleys to get you where you need to go. The subways run out of two major lines, the Broad Street Line and Market-Frankfort Line. Together, these lines are quite comprehensive , making Philly a highly navigable city.

Buses: What you can't reach by subway, you can probably reach by bus — the lines are connected through SEPTA, and you can easily transfer from one mode to the other. SEPTA is constructing a new transit hub on Ridge Avenue to help with wait times and congestion.

Trolleys: Of course, the trackless trolleys are the most fun way to travel around Philly, just for the sheer novelty. They are also connected through SEPTA, making for easy transfer.

Taxis: Taxis are abundant in Philadelphia and can be hailed from most main streets.

Car service: Lyft and Uber are available in Philadelphia, and independently owned car services are also available — the most popular is Philly Black Car.
