Editoral Review of Road Scholar

Founded in 1975 as Elderhostel, Road Scholar took its new name in 2010. The name change was meant to better reflect the non-profit educational travel organization’s mission, which is to offer lifelong learning opportunities to adults.

Besides it’s a clever play on words (the takeoff on Rhodes Scholar), “Road” stands for the journeys the group offers, while “Scholar” indicates the deep devotion to learning that participants possess.

Traveling with Road Scholar is like a study abroad experience, with classes and instructors, with a group of people the same age who have a similarly extensive hindsight on life - and who love to learn.

They offer a very wide range of physical levels as well as many different trip styles. If you're not sure you'll find a trip to your liking with Road Scholar, take the time to browse the options first.

What is a Road Scholar trip?

A Road Scholar trip is designed like a study abroad experience for 60+ travelers - whether you're exploring the diverse birdlife of Texas or the incredible culture of Morocco . Almost everything is included in the price and they cater to many different budgets.

Are Road Scholar trips good?

Road Scholar is consistently well reviewed, and they have a 4.7/5 rating on Travelstride. Travelers regularly praise the lecturers and educational aspects of Road Scholar trips as well as the itinerary planning, group dynamics, and organization.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Road Scholar?

  • Senior travelers & baby boomers
  • Life long learners
  • Solo and single travelers
  • History buffs
  • Grandparents and grandchildren

The first thing to note is that Road Scholar trips are specifically intended for travelers 50 and above (often 65+).

Open minded, active, and worldly life-long learners who have a sense of adventure and willingness to try new things, will love the cadence of a Road Scholar trip. Road Scholar is often the first guided trip experience for older travelers.

Perhaps in your younger days you loved going it alone, planning out your itinerary, and loved the spontaneity of traveling off the beaten path. Now you’re ready to have that same spirit, but with a few more ducks in a row and maybe hit some of the classic sites you missed or didn’t truly appreciate before.

Group of senior friends on small group Road Scholar tour

Road Scholar has recently added special grandparent-grandchild trips and programs for three generations traveling together. Keep in mind that the focus remains on education, distinguishing Road Scholar trips from most commercial tours.

Group sizes with Road Scholar vary, but many small group study tours are limited to 10-24 participants. They are also very friendly to solo travelers - offering many tours for solos and singles where you can meet new friends, and even romantic interests!

Road Scholar allows for particular good compatibility between you and your tour mates as each journey is designed around specific themes from an educational perspective.

Private groups are also available and a popular option for groups of friends or families.

Road Scholar operates tours in 150 countries, as well as every state in the U.S.

Aside from the educational days, many trips include activities in nature, with hiking, kayaking, and other outdoors experiences.

Road Scholar Travel Style

Road Scholar creates their itineraries to encourage learning - both in a scholarly way: from knowledgeable guides, scholars and experts in various fields; and in a holistic way: from the accommodations, meals, and transportation. Your entire journey with Road Scholar is designed as an educational experience.

Tours are referred to as “programs”, guides, tour directors, and leaders are “faculty” and they even have an online “campus store”. Programs are designed to be immersive, exploring a destination in depth, with the focus often on a niche subject. Don't expect to spend 5 minutes at a tourist attraction and then move on. Some itineraries spend a full week in one city, exploring a specific period of time or type of local craft.

Walking trips, train treks, small ship cruises, and riverboat voyages are among the options for trip style. Prices typically stay in the budget/value range consistent with the company’s roots.

Road Scholar offers may ways to save on their trips. These include scholarships, friend referrals, and various specials and deals throughout the year.

Why Choose a Tour With Road Scholar?

Senior travelers on Road Scholar tour taking a selfie

On a Road Scholar tour you can expect a lot of unique cultural, artistic, historic, and local insights. Meet artisans, learn local crafts, and feel the camaraderie of being around other travelers who enjoy the educational aspect of travel.

The original Elderhostel grew out of the vision of the late Marty Knowlton, who spent four years backpacking around Europe while staying in youth hostels -- and wanted American adults to have access to similar cultural experiences.

If you consider yourself a lifelong learner and want to spend your vacation amongst others who share your passion for travel and education, Road Scholar is the place for you.

Covid-19 Travel Update for Road Scholar

In 2020, Road Scholar made the tough decision to temporarily suspend their programs through January 2021 due to the safey concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

Given the Road Scholar traveler age range, the health risks could be severe. Not to mention the interest in international and group travel is significantly lower for this group at the present time.

You may enroll in future trips with the offer of a full refund with cancellation up to 90 days prior to the trip departure. This offer is currently in place through October 31st, 2020.

Road Scholar has a number of virtual classroom options available in a range of durations.

--Excellent value.

Explore Your Mind and the World:

There are no grades or tests on Road Scholar programs. All that's needed is an inquiring mind, an adventurous spirit, and the belief that learning and discovery are lifelong pursuits.

Established in 1975, Road Scholar offers participants once-in-a-lifetime experiences delivered by local and world-renowned experts. Experience in-depth and behind-the-scenes learning opportunities, from cultural excursions and study cruises to walking, biking and more.

Our Most Popular Tours:

Adventures Afloat Cruises: On these educational cruises, you’ll traverse some of the world's most spectacular waterways, offering you a convenient and rewarding way to learn and explore aboard ocean liners, riverboats and small ships.

Independent City Discoveries: Combine structured learning with independent discovery — each program includes hotel accommodations and some meals, lectures, expert-led field trips and detailed outlines for four self-guided excursions.

Grandparent Travel: Discover and explore together with your grandchild through interactive learning experiences and field trips. Both you and your grandchild will share the joy of learning with other grandparents and their grandchildren, bridging generations and opening doors to discovery and friendship.

National Parks: From Denali to the Everglades and countless beautiful, historic places in between, field trips to America’s National Parks reveal what tourists can’t see on their own, with specialized experts showing you how to track wildlife or lead you to the spot with the most awe-inspiring view.

Outdoor Adventures: From hiking in the Grand Canyon to exploring France by barge and bicycle, to sharpening your golf or tennis skills, these active programs exercise the body and the mind.

Service Learning: From tutoring school children or helping restore a crucial forest habitat for wildlife, to assisting with artifact restoration and museum curatorial work, Service Learning adventures are an opportunity to make a difference in the world.

Small Groups: Love to learn in a small-group setting? Check out this collection of programs that have 10-24 participants.

Why Road Scholar?

You Can't Beat Road Scholar's Remarkable Value : Our all-inclusive prices have no hidden costs. Compare the price of one of our programs to what it would cost to duplicate the experience on your own (if that's even possible) and you'll see what we mean by "remarkable value."

Lifelong Learning and Lifelong Friends : When you participate in a Road Scholar program, you will not only expand your mind, you will be in the company of other people who believe that learning is one of the best parts of life.

Instructors Who Inspire: Road Scholar instructors are both experts in their field and lifelong learners themselves who are excited to answer your questions, hear your opinions and share in your experience.

Solo Participants Love Our Programs : Road Scholar programs are renowned for being inclusive, warm and welcoming for solo participants. We can either match you with a roommate or, on most programs, you can choose to room on your own.

Think Outside the Tour : The educational focus of Road Scholar programs makes us completely different from a commercial travel tour. Road Scholar programs offer educational experiences that answer the what's, the why's and the how-to's.

You Go Where Others Can't : We've been offering educational experiences since 1975 and we've made connections with educators and other local "insiders" all around the world, creating learning opportunities that show you the world in a way that just can't be done on your own or on a "tour."

We've Covered All the Bases : From expert-led lectures and field trips to comfortable lodgings and meals, we handle all the details, including the ones you might not anticipate. We've taken the worry out of the planning, so you can focus on your learning experience.

Peace of Mind Through the Road Scholar Travel Assistance Plan : The Road Scholar Travel Assistance Plan, which is purchased on behalf of every participant, provides 24-hour emergency assistance in the unlikely case of a medical emergency.

Scholarships for Those in Financial Need : Each year, Road Scholar awards $250,000 in scholarships toward programs in North America for those who do not have the financial means to participate.

Our Donors : Each year, thousands of donors contribute to our Annual Fund, helping to cover the gap between the tuition we charge and the actual cost of our programs.

The Scoop: What to Know About Road Scholar

This nonprofit tour company has an inspiring educational focus..

Christine Sarkis

The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

Part of what we do here at TourScoop is use our (human) travel expertise to vet tour companies so you have an easy way to get a bunch of trustworthy information all in one place. Today we’re digging into Road Scholar, a popular tour company that’s been around for nearly 50 years. Read on to find everything you need to know to confidently make the decision about whether it’s a good fit for you.

Road Scholar (previously known as Elderhostel) is a tour company with a difference: Since 1975 the company has been run as a nonprofit organization with an educational mission as its primary focus. That means a few things: since it’s a nonprofit, Road Scholar offers excellent value (tours aren’t priced for profit). I also like that it’s unusual among tour companies because it offers both financial aid and caregiver grants. And since it’s education-driven, the tour operator attracts a particularly curious and educated group of travelers, including many retired educators.

Road Scholar’s 4,000 offerings include small group tours, grandparent-grandchild trips, cruises, private jet adventures, and tours focused on passions including birding, food and drink, and history.

TourScoop Takeaways: Road Scholar

Two people on a Road Scholar tour focusing on the Civil Rights Movement

  • Continents Covered: 7
  • Tour Size Average: Road Scholar’s small group programs max out at 24 travelers, but the company also runs larger programs with hundreds of participants who are then broken into small groups for activities.
  • Tour Types: Coach, ship, plane, train

How to Book

Road Scholar tours can be booked directly through Road Scholar ; here are all the ways you can contact the organization for information about trips.

Credibility Check

Road Scholar is a BBB accredited charity that meets the standards for charity accountability, and has a low complaint number and a high response-to-issues ratio. It has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Facebook . Tour-focused online travel agency TourStride past guests gives Road Scholar a 4.4 out of 5.

Tour Destinations

Road Scholar operates tours on seven continents and to nearly 100 countries. In the U.S., it offers itineraries to most states, and internationally, its most popular destinations include Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Italy.

Learning about chemistry on a Road Scholar Grandparent-grandchild trip

Road Scholar offers hundreds of programs on a variety of topics, with thousands of departures annually. Since it’s a nonprofit organization with an educational mission, everything it does is about learning, and it weaves in educational visits, lectures, and events into every trip.

On the website, you can filter trips by hobbies or what you want to learn about, from Military History to Native American Studies, Birding, Pickleball, or another topic. You can also filter the course catalog by activity level, from “Easy Going” to  “Outdoor: Challenging.”

Road Scholar also offers Adventures Afloat (cruises), skip-gen programs geared to grandparents and grandchildren traveling together, and virtual tours that range from one-hour lectures to multi-day online adventures.

Tour Guides

As an education-focused tour organization, Road Scholar refers to its group leaders and instructors as faculty . Faculty members–many of whom have been working with Road Scholar for a decade or more–are local experts with years of experience in travel and academics. Group leaders receive initial training and receive yearly professional development to ensure they’re at the top of their game.

In addition to faculty, tour participants meet a broad range of experts on tour, experts that range from shrimp boat captains to award-winning authors.

Inclusions/Extras

two people looking through binoculars on a boat during a Road Scholar tour to Costa Rica

Road Scholar programs are all-inclusive and have no optional extras or hidden expenses. The price of a tour includes:

  • Accommodations,
  • Experienced Group Leader
  • Expert-led lectures and field trips
  • Most meals (some meals during free time not included)
  • Gratuities throughout the program, including group leader gratuities
  • Road Scholar Assurance Plan   (24-hour assistance in the event of an emergency during a program and insurance for emergency medical evacuation)

Flights to and from the tour are not included in base program prices, but Road Scholar will book flights for participants traveling internationally. Flights booked through Road Scholar also include complimentary airport transfers.

Typical Travelers

If you don’t count kids in the mix on the Grandparent and Family programs, the average age of a Road Scholar participant is 72. But trips generally include a wide range of older travelers from people in their 50s through 90s. About 30% of participants are solo travelers, and of that 30% about 85% are women traveling on their own. Road Scholar trips are generally reported to be very welcoming to solo travelers.

Communication

Once you’ve booked a tour with Road Scholar, the company sends regular emails leading up to trip departures. You can also access your trip information online: once you’re enrolled in a program, all trip information is accessible via your online account.

Road Scholar’s U.S.-based contact center (800-454-5768) is open 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (ET), Monday through Friday. Monday is the contact center’s busiest day, so to avoid long wait times, call midweek or at the end of the week if you can). Road Scholar has callback feature, which allows you to save your place in the queue without having to wait on the phone–a representative calls you back as soon as it’s your turn in line.

Loyalty Program

Because Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization, discounts are not offered, including for repeat travelers. But the company is dedicated to making travel affordable for more travelers, and offers financial aid and caregiver grants .

Private Options

Groups made up of between 18 and 24 people can reserve private departures of existing itineraries with Road Scholar. If you organize a group of 20 or more, you can take advantage of group discounts or free travel for one person.

Sustainability Efforts

Road Scholar offsets some of the carbon emissions created through travel on its programs. It invests in projects including rainforest preservation in Brazil, methane gas recapture in Florida, and reforestation in Kenya. The company also tries to use sustainability certified hotels, locally owned services, and restaurants that serve locally sourced meals whenever possible.

Health and Safety Practices

Road Scholar has partners on the ground worldwide who monitor all areas visited by the company. If concerns arise, Road Scholar will find replacement content or cancel the program, depending on the severity and location of the issue.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

roads travel group

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

What to Look for in a Senior Travel Group

When searching for a senior travel group, consider the following key factors to ensure an enjoyable and fulfilling travel experience.

Itinerary and Destinations

Look for a travel group that offers diverse and well-planned itineraries to destinations that align with your interests and preferences, whether it’s cultural exploration, nature-focused trips, or a mix of both.

Check the group size to ensure it is comfortable for you. Smaller groups often allow for more personalized experiences and flexibility during the trip.

Travel Pace and Physical Requirements

Assess the travel pace and physical demands of the trips offered to ensure they match your fitness level and mobility needs.

Tour Guides and Expertise

Review the credentials and experience of the tour guides leading the trips, as knowledgeable guides can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Accommodations

Check the quality and suitability of accommodations provided during the trip to ensure they meet your comfort standards.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check the package details to understand what’s included (e.g., meals, activities, entrance fees) and what additional expenses you might need to budget for.

Group Dynamics and Social Activities

Consider the social aspect of the travel group, as meeting like-minded individuals can greatly enhance your journey, so look for groups that offer ample opportunities for group interactions and social activities.

Customer Reviews and Testimonials

Read reviews and testimonials from previous travelers to gauge their satisfaction and overall experience with the travel group.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a senior travel group that aligns with your interests, preferences, and requirements, making your journey a memorable and enjoyable one.

Gray line

Tom Hale & Backroads

It was the back roads that first attracted him, as a competitive runner at Campolindo High School (where he still holds the two-mile record at 8:57.2) and at the University of Oregon, where he was a teammate of legendary runner Steve Prefontaine. With a Masters in Environmental Planning from UCLA, Hale was six months into an environmental planning position in Las Vegas when the back roads called again—big time.

A middle-of-the-night inspiration to start a bike touring company motivated him to pedal 5,000 miles alone through the West, all the while formulating plans for his new business. Settling in Berkeley, Hale washed fondue pots by night and built his fledgling travel company by day. In true entrepreneurial fashion, he did it all—designed the itineraries, maintained the bikes, led the trips, produced the catalog. His first trip—a bike tour of Death Valley—attracted four guests (one of them his mother). Fast-forward to 2023 and over 40 years of nearly consistent growth.

Backroads hosts thousands of guests on Biking, Walking & Hiking and Multi-Adventure Trips around the world each year. We set the standard for on-trip support. Our multiple leaders and vans give you flexibility every day. From easygoing to avid—all activity levels are welcome.

Latest Advances in Group Travel Transportation

file-4RGV.jpeg

In the realm of travel, the dynamics of group transportation have evolved significantly over the past few years. Gone are the days when group travel merely meant a cumbersome bus or an overly packed train compartment. The latest advances in technology and service models have brought about a revolution, making trips more enjoyable, efficient, and tailored for every type of traveler. This article takes a playful dive into the innovations shaping the future of group travel transportation.

Green Machines: The Eco-Friendly Shift

One of the most commendable trends is the shift towards eco-friendly transportation . Electric buses and solar-powered coaches are not just concepts anymore; they are hitting the roads in style. This green transition is drastically reducing carbon footprints , offering both style and sustainability on the go.

Flexible and Modular Transportation Solutions

The one-size-fits-all approach is becoming obsolete. Today’s group travel vehicles come in various configurations and sizes, catering to different group needs and preferences. Modular vehicles that can adjust their capacity based on the group size are not just futuristic concepts but are beginning to grace our roads.

For those organizing group travel within Toronto, finding a transportation solution that accommodates everyone comfortably while ensuring reliability can be a challenge. Fortunately, options like a coach bus company Toronto offer a range of vehicles to suit different group sizes and travel needs, making it easier to manage logistics for any group outing or event.

Smart Booking Systems

The hassle of planning and booking group travel has been significantly eased with the advent of intelligent booking systems. These digital platforms allow for customizations at every step, ensuring that group preferences are prioritized. Whether it’s seating arrangements, scheduling, or route optimization, smart booking systems are making group travel a breeze.

Experiential Travel: Beyond Just Transport

Transportation for group travel is increasingly focusing on creating an experience, not just providing a ride. Some services are now offering guided tours, interactive sessions, and themed trips that transform the travel experience, making the journey an integral part of the adventure.

Connectivity and Entertainment Onboard

With the latest tech onboard, the journey is as enjoyable as the destination. Modern vehicles are equipped with Wi-Fi, infotainment systems, and personal charging stations , ensuring that travelers remain connected and entertained throughout. This leap in onboard facilities marks a significant upgrade over older modes of group transportation.

Integration of Local Experiences

The integration of local experiences into group travel transportation adds another layer of richness to trips. Partnerships with local businesses and guides offer authentic experiences that are seamlessly woven into the travel itinerary, allowing travelers to deeply engage with the cultures and communities they visit.

Enhanced Safety Measures

Safety always comes first, and the latest advances in group travel transportation do not disappoint. From real-time GPS tracking to advanced safety features like automatic braking and lane-keeping assist, modern group travel options are safer than ever, providing peace of mind for all travelers.

Personalized Travel Itineraries

The rise of personalized travel itineraries is setting new standards in group travel. Leveraging data analytics and AI, travel providers can now offer bespoke experiences that cater to the individual preferences of group members, ensuring a unique and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Advanced Safety Protocols in Response to Global Challenges

In response to global health challenges, new safety protocols are becoming standard, including touchless check-ins and disinfection procedures. Ensuring the health and safety of travelers is paramount, with technologies such as UV-C disinfection and HEPA filters being integrated into transportation options to provide cleaner and safer environments.

The landscape of group travel transportation is more vibrant and dynamic than ever before. With a keen eye on sustainability, technology, and user experience, the sector is redefining what it means to travel in groups. These advances promise not just improved logistics and efficiency but also a richer, more enjoyable travel experience. As we look to the future, it’s clear that the journey together is just getting started, and it’s more exhilarating than ever.

Organizing a group trip can be a daunting task. Deciding where to go, what to do and where you'll stay with a group of people  — who all have their own opinions  — can be challenging enough to nearly convince you not to go.

But certain destinations are decidedly worth the hassle. Whether you are traveling with friends or with family, here are nine places that are perfect for your next group adventure.

A hiker is standing on a large rock looking out over a mountainous landscape that's covered in trees with fall foliage

Great Barrington, The Berkshires, USA

The Berkshires in Massachusetts is a popular escape for many East Coast city dwellers due to the region's fall foliage and charming towns. Basing yourself in Great Barrington offers a wholesome oasis for any type of big group. Rent a house, preferably on a lake, and sit back and enjoy the long weekend. Great Barrington's quaint main street is worth an afternoon excursion. Flip through vinyl at Rob's Records , find your next favorite side table at The Berkshire Galleries of Great Barrington and round the day off with dinner at Prarie Whale .

For literature fans, The Berkshires were once home to many writers, including Edith Wharton. Take a day trip to visit her estate,  The Mount , for history, culture and stunning architecture. And when all that relaxing starts to feel dull, break a sweat with a hike to the largest waterfall in Massachusetts, Bash Bish Falls .

A Land Rover safari vehicle with tourists standing looking out of its roof is stationary on a dirt track as zebras pass in front of it

Is your group looking for an unforgettable adventure?  Tanzania  offers a wealth of group-centered activities, primarily in the bush. If it's always been your dream to catch a glimpse of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), pack your friends or family into a Land Rover and head to the Serengeti . Spend your days cruising through the  Ngorongoro Crater , enjoying cocktails under the stars, and getting a front-row seat to some of Earth's most fascinating creatures.

Hustle and bustle of crowds during the day on the famous Fremont Street in the heart of downtown Las Vegas with its casinos, neon lights and street entertainment.

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

At its very core, Las Vegas is an adult playground. Whether you come for a bachelor party, girls’ trip or family adventure, there is no shortage of fun. Here, you can catch a water-inspired  Cirque du Soleil  show at the  Bellagio , enjoy a sunset meal in the exclusive seats of the  Eiffel Tower Restaurant , hit  Encore Beach Club  for a rowdy pool party or try your luck at one of the countless poker tables.

Later, stop by the  Mob Museum  for a look at the nitty-gritty side of the USA. And if you get the urge, tie the knot at the kitschy yet playful  Viva Las Vegas Chapel  – everyone knows the best marriages start with an Elvis serenade.

Three people stand to order from the open air countertop of a restaurant selling Cuban food and drinks on historic Calle Ocho in Little Havana, Miami

Miami, Florida, USA

Playful and glamorous, Miami is a certified group trip destination. Everything about Miami screams, “Grab your friends and have some fun.” Head to  South Beach  if you crave the classic Miami experience, but you don't necessarily have to focus on beaches and nightlife. Leave the golden sand behind for a day and explore Little Havana, eat traditional, mouthwatering Cuban food at  Versailles , and spend an afternoon in the  Art District  of the neighborhood, which features a handful of stellar galleries.

Head to  Wynwood , where art has taken over the street with mesmerizing murals around every corner. Afterward, catch some live music at  Lagniappe , a sultry club that brings a New Orleans flair to Miami. With art, good food, and seemingly endless nightlife, there are plenty of things to do.

A sprawling villa is surrounded by trees and vineyards in Chianti, Tuscany

Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

What could go wrong with a group of friends in wine country? Nothing when it's in Tuscany . Head to  Chianti , the birthplace of one of Italy's most beloved wines, for stunning landscapes and endless tastings. Many vineyards in Tuscany offer exceptional lodging, such as  Castello di Ama , where everything is accessible, the tastings are just a stroll away, and romance is in the air.

And when you have nursed too many hangovers, truffling hunting, pasta making and olive oil tasting are there to step in. If you prefer a less structured environment, rent a villa, relax by the pool, ride bicycles through the vineyards and cook lavish dinners to enjoy in the garden. When the countryside begins to feel a bit slow, head to  Florence  or  Venice  for a little city action before you head home.

A woman in a red cover-up stands looking over a stunning beach in Mallorca.

Mallorca, Spain

Sometimes the best thing you can do is escape to an island. Mallorca is a destination for all ages, and whether you are craving a trip with friends or looking for a winter getaway with your kids, there's no better place to relax, recover and enjoy a beachy retreat.

Let the crystal-clear water and soothing ocean breeze wash over you at  Platja des Coll Baix , one of the island's most beloved beaches. Take a steep hike to  Santuari de la Mare de Déu des Puig,  a 14th-century nunnery that sits atop a towering hill, or spend the afternoon exploring some of the island's most mesmerizing caves at  Coves del Drac . With no lack of beaches, sun, and activities, expect to leave rested and glowing.

Skiers descend a powdery slope in a mountainous landscape bathed in bright sunshine

Whistler, Canada

Is your group ready to hit the slopes? Whistler is an amazing destination that will offer something even for those who prefer to hang out in the chalet. Not only are the courses varied and the hills steep, but the area is beautiful too. The picturesque village, with its alpine-style architecture and towering mountains in the background, is worth marveling at. There's even the chance for a bit of culture while you're here with Whistler's developing art scene.

Ride the  Peak 2 Peak Gondola , which offers magical views and a quick journey between Whistler and Blackcomb. If you have had enough time in the cold, stop in at  Whistler Brewing Company  for a pint or a tour and tasting at one of BC's oldest microbreweries. Wrap up the trip with a visit to the  Audain Art Museum  for Indigenous and British Columbian artwork.

People snorkel in front of a beautiful coralscape at Surin National Park in Thailand.

With its greenery, historic temples and seriously good food, it's no wonder Thailand  makes a fabulous group-trip option for those looking for some adventure.

Begin your exploration of Thailand by diving head-first into the cuisine. Branch out beyond  pad thai  with a steaming bowl of  khao soi  before eating your way through the rest of Thailand's  delicious dishes . Take a refreshing dip at  Erawan National Park , but beware of the monkeys; they are known to sometimes snatch items from visitors. Take home handmade souvenirs with a visit to  Cicada Market . This night-time shopping experience will give you a taste of the local way of life. Before you depart, take the opportunity to marvel at Thailand's ornate architecture by visiting  Wat Phra Kaew  and  Wat Traimit .

Many people are walking and pushing bicycles along a crowded cobblestone street in Prague at sunset in the summertime

Prague, Czech Republic

Does your group prefer a little more history alongside your adventure? Prague is the answer. Relatively affordable compared to many of its European neighbors, Prague is an excellent option for larger groups looking to keep expenses on the lower end and families wanting to switch it up for their annual vacation.

The architecture of the city is unforgettable. Watch the  Astronomical Clock  hit the hour and enjoy its short but beautiful show before wandering the narrow, lively streets. Cross the iconic  Charles Bridge  and see the city stretch out before you. Head to  St Vitus Cathedral  for its Gothic, eye-catching exterior and the centuries-old treasures that lie inside. Relax within the peaceful  Wallenstein Garden , once fit for a duke. There is simply so much to uncover in this complex city.

American Air sees return to profit on summer travel demand

American Airlines Group Inc. expects a return to profit heading into the busy summer travel season after bad weather and delays linked to air traffic congestion weighed on the carrier’s early-year results.

Adjusted earnings will be $1.15 to $1.45 a share in the second quarter, American said in a statement Thursday as it reported a loss for the first three months. The midpoint is above the $1.16 average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The outlook is an early sign that American’s post-pandemic shift in strategy to focus on domestic and near-international routes may pay off. The carrier believes its Sun Belt hubs in the US will benefit from a shift in population to states like Texas and Florida and its regional aircraft network can serve a broader base of smaller cities with little airline presence.

American shares slipped 2.1% at 9:41 a.m. in New York, reversing a premarket gain as the broader market fell. The stock increased 1.3% this year through Wednesday.

Capacity this quarter will climb as much as 9% from 2023, fueled by another summer of strong leisure demand and growing corporate and small business travel. Analyst were expecting 7.6% growth on average. Non-fuel unit costs will rise as much as 3%.

The airline reiterated its full-year profit forecast of $2.25 to $3.25 a share.

The carrier has largely sidestepped fallout from the crisis engulfing Boeing Co., which has slowed deliveries amid manufacturing issues and has struggled to get certification for overdue models. While American has purchased the delayed 737 Max 10, those aren’t scheduled to start arriving until 2028. Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom has encouraged the planemaker to “get its act together.”

Isom reiterated that message on a conference call Thursday with analysts, saying he has talked repeatedly with Boeing’s management.

“Get back to the basics - quality and safety are paramount,” the CEO said about the planemaker. “We’ll continue to work with them, do everything we can to support Boeing.”

Fewer Planes

Manufacturing delays will reduce to 16 the number of 737 Max aircraft American receives this year, down from 20 previously, and 787 deliveries will slide to three from six.

“With our narrowbody fleet and what we’ve projected in the widebody fleet we’re in pretty good shape with aircraft through the end of the decade,” Isom said.

American’s first-quarter adjusted loss of 34 cents a share compared with a 29-cent deficit expected by analysts. Revenue was $12.6 billion. The results for the period were affected by “significant weather events across its network,” American said.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier in February increased the cost to check bags. Global airlines collected $33.3 billion in such fees in 2023, up 15% from a year earlier.

American has delayed until July a change under which most customers will earn AAdvantage miles and loyalty points if they book flights directly with the carrier or certain partner airlines or preferred travel agencies. The shift was to have occurred May 1. It’s part of a broader effort by the airline to push customers and companies to deal directly with American instead of going through online agencies or corporate travel managers.

Irkutsk to Krasnoyarsk: The road between two of Siberia’s most thriving cities

roads travel group

The Paris of Siberia

Originally established as a trading center, Irkutsk was founded over 350 years ago. Today, the wealth that once poured into the city is evident in the many historic wooden houses featuring elaborate woodwork and window trim. Once referred to as the “Paris of Siberia,” Irkutsk has traditionally served as Siberia’s cultural, economic and intellectual capital.

Don’t leave the city before visiting the Znamensky Monastery or the Bogoyavlensky Cathedral , which were both originally destroyed by fires during Irkutsk’s early days. The monastery, completed in 1772, features a small cemetery where notable locals are buried. The cathedral features a jumble of onion domes and towers that have long made it one of Siberia’s most iconic buildings.

The Hotel Victoria is a good option with rooms starting at $100 a night including breakfast and parking.

After exploring the southern coast of Lake Baikal on your drive along the Trans-Siberian Highway, you can visit the lake’s western coast as a day trip from Irkutsk.

Hop on a ferry run by the Eastern-Siberian Inland Navigation Company, also known by its Cyrillic acronym, VSRP . The ferry company offers package tours and ferry service to numerous towns on Lake Baikal.

If you just want to get out on the water for a few hours, VSRP runs a historic tour along the Angara River (about $10, 1 hour) that includes an audio guide. You can also book a tour to beautiful Peschanaya Bay (about $50, 10 hours, Fridays and Sundays only), or the quaint lakeside village of Bolshie Koty (about $26, 4-10 hours depending on the boat).

You can also buy a ferry ticket at VSRP to many Baikal towns. Bolshie Koty (about $13, 1.5 hours from Irkutsk) is one of the most tranquil locations on the lake. Ferries run to the village three times a day from Irkutsk except for Mondays and select weekdays during the summer. Check the ferry schedule before planning your trip.

To get back on the road from Hotel Victoria, drive south on ul. Karla Marksa and take a right on ul. Lenina. Turn left on ul. Chkalova and bear right toward the Angarsky Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, get on the M-55 Federal Highway.

Outside Irkutsk the route number on the Trans-Siberian Highway changes to M-53, which will take you to the city of Krasnoyarsk (14 hours, 1,000 kilometers). The long drive to Krasnoyarsk consists of tall hills and farmland. Like the drive through the Russian Far East, you can park your car by the road and camp, although it’s best to ask for permission if you see a house nearby.

Siberia is a land of rivers, and the city of Bratsk (9 hours, 600 kilometers north of Irkutsk) is home to the Bratsk Dam , once the world’s largest hydroelectric power station.

The Bratsk Dam can be visited independently, but you’ll see far more with a tour. Contact Taiga Tours in Bratsk to arrange a visit to the Bratsk Dam.

During summer different varieties of wildflowers grow on the M-53. The flowers overtake entire fields that appear in the distance like purple or yellow lakes. Locals often pull over to pick wild berries and mushrooms, or appear in the meadows leading flocks of sheep to graze in the countryside. This is a great area to witness the pastoral life described in classic Russian novels; you’ll find that rural traditions are alive and well in the villages on the road to Krasnoyarsk.

roads travel group

Upon reaching Krasnoyarsk, you can drive south away from the Trans-Siberian Highway into the Tuva Republic, home to the Tuva people , practicing Buddhists who trace their ethnic and cultural roots to the Turkic and Mongolian peoples. Most famous for their throat singers , Tuva can be a fascinating, albeit long, side trip that is recommended if you have time.

Coming to Alabama: Newsom’s Abortion-Access Ad, Depicting an Arrest

The ad portrays a woman trying to leave the state to have an abortion. The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee started by Mr. Newsom, the California governor, created it.

A law enforcement officer holding a pregnancy test while conducting a traffic stop with a female motorist.

By Neil Vigdor

  • April 21, 2024

A woman nervously peers into her rearview mirror as a patrolman activates his car’s lights and sirens. She is less than a mile from leaving Alabama to seek abortion services, but it’s too late: The next thing she knows, she is being handed a pregnancy test and is handcuffed.

The encounter is depicted in an unvarnished new television ad called “Fugitive.” The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, produced the ad.

It will appear on Monday in Alabama, where Republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel elsewhere for an abortion. The state’s abortion ban, one of the nation’s strictest, outlaws the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape and incest.

“Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care,” the ad’s narrator says.

The ad then shows the patrolman approaching the vehicle: “Miss, I’m going to need you to step out of the vehicle,” he says, tapping the kit on the driver’s side door, “take a pregnancy test.”

The ad is scheduled to run on broadcast and cable television, along with digital platforms like YouTube, for two weeks, according to the PAC. The cost of the ad buy was not immediately available.

Alabama’s attorney general, Steve Marshall, a Republican, has clashed with the Justice Department and abortion assistance providers over whether the state has the authority to prosecute individuals or groups that help women leave the state to have the procedure.

Last month, Republicans introduced a bill in the Alabama House that would make it a misdemeanor to harbor or transport a minor to seek abortion services.

Mr. Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for President Biden while harboring future White House ambitions of his own. He has regularly skirmished with G.O.P. governors and Republican-led states over abortion access, immigration, crime and other issues.

While Republicans have seized on crossings at the southern border in their messaging, Democrats have harnessed the issue of abortion-access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. It helped propel Democratic candidates to key victories during the midterm elections in 2022 and in races last year.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were people with rights, casting a cloud of uncertainty over in vitro fertilization. The state later passed a law giving I.V.F. clinics criminal and civil immunity, but it did not address whether embryos have the legal status of human beings.

In another seismic ruling, the Arizona Supreme Court this month upheld an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for women’s health care and election-year politics in the state, a critical political battleground.

Mr. Newsom said in a social media post at the time that California, which borders Arizona, would provide a refuge for women affected by the decision.

“Arizona wasn’t even a state — it was a territory — when this draconian abortion ban was passed,” he said. “That’s how extreme this is. California remains ready to help Arizonans access reproductive health care.”
