CHEF’S PERSPECTIVE

Our tours are run by chefs who contribute a culinary perspective, telling the story of the Northwest through its food.

LOCAL TASTE

We strategically choose our partners to ensure the best quality products of the Northwest are represented.

SMALL GROUP SIZE

We keep group-size smaller than most tours to create a more intimate, less touristy experience. This also creates a better dynamic to ask questions, absorb the information and connect with the other group members.

LOCAL FOOD WITH A PURPOSE

More than just providing great tasting food, our vendors serve as a talking-point to our farming, fishing and produce in the Northwest and what they are doing to maintain higher quality control than the average. Our team keeps the tours light-hearted but also bring some attention to our local food ecosystem and touch on awareness in certain industries.

RECEIVE 10% DISCOUNT

After the tour, all guests get a 10% discount card for not only the vendors we visited on the tour, but all of our market partners.

“ I cannot recommend this tour enough!! It is a must!! Our guide was Chef Carolyn. She was so knowledgeable, helpful, kind and witty! She gave us great historic information about Pike Place Market as well as took us to some really delicious food spots in the Market.

She was very considerate and aware of any dietary restrictions of the group. The shop owners all loved her and it was easy to see why.

If you are in Seattle, you have to take this food tour!! You will not regret it!”

“Our family took the wonderful 2-hour foodie walking tour of Pike’s Place Market. We got to skip the line at many famous eateries and tried all sorts of delicacies from specialty chocolate to clam chowder to cheeses and sausages. We even got to try the James Beard award winning Philippino food hidden back in the market. Chef Carolyn was amazing! She told us all sorts of stories about the history of the market and food stalls and food and recipe facts from her many years as a chef and restaurant owner. We highly recommend this tour.”

11 BEST Seattle Food Tours for Visitors in 2024

seattle food tours

What are the best Seattle food tours? Is Seattle a foodie city?

Having walked nearly every inch of this city from top to bottom during our road trip across the United States, we can say without a doubt that Seattle is one of the top foodie cities we’ve ever visited!

We enjoyed everything from grilled salmon at Market Grill to artisanal caramels over at Fran’s. Not to mention quite a few craft beers from our favorite brewery in the area, Old Stove Brewing Co., plus we had to get a coffee at the birthplace of Starbucks on Pike Place!

Whether you know what you like or you’re an adventurous eater, there’s no better way to experience all that Seattle has to offer than by taking a food tour. Having traveled across the city with our dog in tow, we were a bit more limited as to where we could sit inside or had to settle for take-out, but with a food tour, your options are endless!

FAQ: Seattle Food Tours Pike Place

Pike Place Market is at the heart of Seattle's food tours

In this last section, we’ve provided some helpful information regarding the food scene in Seattle like whether or not food tours are worth the cost, what foods Seattle is famous for, and more!

Is a Seattle Food Tour Worth It?

Absolutely, a Seattle food tour is worth every penny! Coming from two people who spent a lot of money purchasing different meals individually, these food tours offer the chance to sample everything for a much more affordable rate.

Of course, if you’re traveling with a large group and want to do a self-guided Seattle food tour you absolutely could since there would be enough people to eat all of the meals and share the cost.

However, having a knowledgeable local guide take you to the best hidden gems, get you a chance to chat with local vendors, and show you the top foods that you simply can’t miss is well worth the cost in our opinion!

What Foods Is Seattle Famous For?

seattle food tours

Seattle is renowned for its vibrant food scene, highlighted by a few iconic dishes and ingredients that are a must-try for any visitor.

Salmon , freshly caught and often smoked or grilled, tops the list, showcasing the Pacific Northwest’s rich seafood tradition. Coffee is another staple, with Seattle being the birthplace of Starbucks along with countless artisanal coffee shops that dot the city.

Oysters , harvested from the cold, nutrient-rich waters of Puget Sound, are celebrated for their quality and freshness. The city’s culinary scene also embraces innovation, with craft beers from local breweries and creative takes on classic dishes , like the Seattle-style hot dog, loaded with cream cheese, onions, and served in a pretzel bun.

Rainier cherries , a sweet local treat, are yellow-orange in color and are one of our absolute favorites to find whenever we’re in Washington. Lastly, no mention of Seattle’s famous foods would be complete without the quintessential clam chowder , a creamy delight that warms the soul in any weather!

What is the Food Culture in Seattle?

Seattle’s food culture is as diverse as its landscape, strongly influenced by local produce, seafood, and a melting pot of cultures . It’s a city where East meets West in the culinary scene, allowing for a vibrant mix of traditional American cuisine alongside Asian, European, and Native American influences.

Seattleites have a deep appreciation for fresh, local ingredients, often showcased in farm-to-table dining experiences (like those at The Peasant ) that highlight the best of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer. The city’s proximity to the ocean means seafood plays a significant role in its culinary identity, with dishes featuring salmon, oysters, and crab taking center stage.

As we mentioned before, coffee is also an integral piece of the city’s identity, with a thriving community of coffee enthusiasts and professionals. Finally, Seattle’s food culture embraces sustainability and ethical eating, with many restaurants and markets focusing on organic and locally sourced ingredients.

This commitment to quality and sustainability, mixed with a love for inventive and diverse cuisine, makes Seattle’s food scene uniquely captivating!

Is Seattle a Foodie Town?

seattle food tours

Without a doubt, Seattle is a foodie’s paradise . This bustling city not only boasts an impressive array of food tours that offer a glimpse into its eclectic culinary landscape, but it also stands as a testament to the innovation and diversity that mark its food scene.

From the iconic Pike Place Market, which showcases an abundant selection of fresh produce, seafood, and artisanal goods, to the myriad of restaurants that serve everything from gourmet meals to authentic international dishes, Seattle caters to every palate.

What Food was Invented in Seattle?

Seattle is known for being the birthplace of several iconic foods including the Dutch baby pancake and Rainier cherries, with teriyaki making it big thanks to a Japanese wrestler who made his way to Seattle in the 1970s .

The Dutch baby pancake, supposedly first served at Manca’s Cafe in the early 20th century, is a large, fluffy pancake baked in a skillet that has become a breakfast favorite far beyond Seattle’s borders.

Additionally, teriyaki as we know it in the United States was popularized and arguably reinvented in Seattle, adapting traditional Japanese cooking methods to suit American tastes, resulting in a distinctive, sweet-soy glazed way of serving up various meats that has become a staple in American cuisine.

However, this traditional Japanese cooking technique did not start in the United States.

How Much Do Food Tours in Seattle Cost?

Seattle is home to dozens of amazing food options that you can taste during a Seattle food tour

On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 per person for a standard food tour lasting two to three hours in Seattle. These tours typically include a variety of tastings at multiple locations, and often, the price will cover all food samples.

For more luxurious or private experiences, prices can go up to $200 or more per person , especially for tours that include premium experiences like wine tastings, gourmet meals, or behind-the-scenes access to kitchens and chefs.

It’s advisable to book in advance and check what is included in the price to ensure the best value and experience!

How Long Are Food Tours in Seattle?

Seattle food tours typically vary in length, but most are designed to last about two to three hours . This duration allows participants to visit several venues and enjoy a range of tastings without feeling rushed. Longer tours are also available, especially those that include more comprehensive dining experiences or visits to multiple regions across the state, and these can last up to eight hours including transportation.

The length of the tour often depends on the focus—whether it’s on quick bites and street food or a more leisurely exploration of sit-down restaurants and specialty shops.

Looking for the best Pike Place Food Tours in Seattle? Let me break them down for you!

Pike Place Market, established in 1907, is a bustling and iconic historic landmark in downtown Seattle overlooking Elliott Bay. The Market is not only one of the oldest public markets in the US, but it’s also one of the largest, spanning about 9 acres with over 370 shops, craft vendors, and restaurants , which means food tours galore!

Having lived in Seattle for 9 years and still living in Washington state, I’m well-acquainted with Pike Place Market and its tours. I’m never disappointed, as I enjoy trying unique foods and always learn something new about the area despite being a local.

Here is my list of 11 best food tours to eat your way through Pike Place Market.

If you don’t have time to read the whole article, this is my top pick for a food tour in the market:

My Top 3 Favorite Places to Hit on a Pike Place Market Food Tour

seattle food tours

Pike Place Market is full of diverse and delicious foods from fresh produce, to locally caught fish, to hot donuts. Because there’s so much to taste in Pike Place Market, food tours can’t hit them all.

However, if a tour samples one of these businesses, I’m a happy camper!

  • Pike Place Chowder – I’m not the biggest seafood fan, but hands down, Pike Place Chowder’s clam chowder is out of this world! It is my par for clam chowder!
  • Rachel’s Ginger Beer – I love all the different flavors and colors that you can find at Rachel’s, it’s so refreshing on a hot summer day. And when they add some booze to it….omg!
  • Turkish Delight – It’s always hard to decide if I like their Turkish delights or their different flavored baklavas the most. Either way, I love this stop!

What to Expect on a Pike Place Food Tour

pike place fish co is something you'll hit on a pike place market food tour

Pike Place Market is famous for fish throwing, endless bouquets of fresh (cheap!) flowers, views of Mt. Rainier , the “original” Starbucks, the Gum Wall, and FOOD!

Pike Place food tours are a fun way of sampling all the flavors the market has to offer led by local experts who know the vendors personally and will share their knowledge of Seattle history along the way.

You’ll meet your guide at a pre-designated spot somewhere inside the market or on the outskirts. They’ll tell you what color shirt or identifying feature to look out for.

Groups tend to stay small, so guides do not need a microphone to be heard. In fact, they are prohibited within the market, which I appreciate.

Because only a certain number of tour participants are allowed in the market at a time, you’ll be given a Pike Place Market PDA issued sticker to wear during the tour to be identified as a tour guest and not a random visitor.

Your guide will lead you from food stop to food stop, introducing you to the vendors who make all the delectables. They’ll point out what makes each sampling special and help you savor and appreciate each food. Sometimes they might have you wait outside the shop while they go gather your food samples, allowing you to not have to face the crowds inside.

fruit for sale at pike place market

Wear comfortable shoes! These will all be walking tours, so make sure you can stay on your feet for about a mile over a period of 2 hours. Most of it will be flat, but there will probably be a steep hill or two.

Tours will operate rain or shine. This is the PNW, so rain is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean your tour will be canceled. Keep an eye on the weather and dress accordingly. I always wear layers.

During the summer, it can get super hot within the market as the sun reflects off all the windows onto the pavement. As someone susceptible to heat stroke, I know I have to prepare for hot sun here.

Accessibility varies . Pike Place Market is old, which means there are still original cobblestones or steps-only places making it not wheel friendly. Check with your tour company to see if they are wheelchair or stroller accessible.

No food destination is guaranteed . While most tours will have their regular vendors that they stop at, due to scheduling and availability, your guide might have to find a different vendor to substitute for another. Just go with the flow and try not to be disappointed if you don’t hit a vendor you were anticipating.

You’ll be surprisingly satiated . Because you’ll be sampling so many different foods, you usually end up eating about a light meal’s worth. You’ll undoubtedly feel full and satisfied afterwards.

Dietary restrictions vary . If you have special dietary restrictions, some accommodations can usually be made, especially for vegetarians. Let your tour operator know ahead of time so they can find a substitute if they are able.

Epilogue: Pike Place Market Food Tours

bread bowl of pike place clam chowder

Pike Place food tours are a great way of tasting what the market has to offer without having to buy full portions. I think it’s a fantastic way to try a variety of foods and discover where you would like to go back and experience more.

I also love learning about Seattle’s history and the fascinating stories about Pike Place Market. I always seem to learn a new tidbit of information I didn’t know before.

Food tour guides help you navigate the overwhelming amount of food stops and flavors in the market, all while keeping the tour entertaining and informative. They will most certainly leave an impression and make your tour memorable.

🌲 Washington Travel Planning Guide 🌲

🚨  Should I buy Washington travel insurance?

YES  — I recommend  Travel Insurance Master  because you can compare multiple options with one click. With plans starting at $5/day per person, why not give yourself piece of mind? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

🚗  Is it safe to rent a car in Washington?

YES  — It’s totally safe to drive in Washington. And unless you are planning to just stay in Seattle, renting a car is pretty much a necessity! Beware of tolls whether crossing bridges or driving in HOV lanes. I recommend Discover Cars as they have some of the best prices around.

📞  Will my phone work in Washington?

YES  — All major cell providers work in Washington. However, be prepared for some dead spots in the more remote parts like in the middle of the cascades.

🛏️  What’s the best way to book my Washington accommodations?

For Washington hotels,  Booking.com  is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking at Airbnbs for a more home-like stay, don’t forget to check  VRBO  for potentially better prices and options.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Washington flights?

I recommend looking at  Skyscanner  for finding cheap flights.  Pro Tip : check if flying into Everett is cheaper than flying into Seattle.

🛂  Do I need a passport to visit Washington?

NO  — If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Washington is part of the United States. If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.

🧳 What should I pack to Washington?

Layers! Layers! Layers! Weather can get finnicky, so prepare for both rain and sunny warm days. Wear comfortable walking shoes that can go from city strolls to mountain hiking.

Seattle Restaurant Week’s best deals, intriguing new spots, and old favorites

Spring is in the air and it’s time once again for Seattle Restaurant Week. SRW started Sunday and runs through April 27, with more than 200 Seattle-area restaurants, bars, food trucks and pop-ups participating. There are options for brunch, lunch and dinner with special menus at fixed price points ranging from $20 to $65.

With this many restaurants participating, it can take some sleuthing to figure out which spots offer truly great deals — a critique that has plagued the event in recent years. However, even if some of the set menus might not provide earth-shatteringly huge cost savings, the fixed price point can still be enticing when it comes to spending your hard-earned dollars at a brand new (or new to you) spot.

We’ve parsed through the extensive list to offer some suggestions not only on which deals seem the best in terms of value, but which spots are interesting to try, as well as some places that are highly regarded by The Seattle Times food team. A full list can be found at srw.org . Also, be realistic with your expectations — restaurant week portions are usually smaller than regular portions, and depending on the time/day, the dining experience might take a little longer if the restaurant is busy with, well, restaurant week crowds. As always, make reservations when possible, paying attention to when menus are offered.

For the best deals, go to…

Art of the table.

3801 Stone Way N., Suite A, Seattle; 206-282-0942, artofthetable.net

This Fremont space is known for elaborate five-course tasting menus with prices that can run over $300 per couple. The SRW dinner is $65 per person and features a collection of small plates including a nettle vichyssoise, smoked wagyu brisket with braised cabbage, tuna with ginger carrot butter and an apple almond frangipane tart. An optional wine flight is available for $40.

8404 Bowdoin Way, Edmonds; 425-977-0523, bardojo.com

Head to the Five Corners neighborhood in Edmonds for a three-course meal that includes shigoku oysters, mushroom pastor bao, slow braised short ribs, king salmon and lychee panna cotta among the choices for $65 person. The best part of the deal is the four oysters — offered for $4 each on the restaurant’s regular menu. Additionally, you’ll find most of the SRW menu to be unique to the event and not part of the restaurant’s usual fare. Take note, this menu is not available on Friday and Saturday nights.

Barking Frog

14580 NE 145 th St., Woodinville; 425-424-2999, willowslodge.com/barking-frog

If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to lunch in a serene setting, check out Woodinville’s Barking Frog. The $35 SRW lunch menu includes a choice between soup, salad or pork rillette; mac and cheese, bacon cheeseburger and fries or chicken Caesar salad, and a beignet or ice cream for dessert. The menu presents a cost savings of at least 10 bucks and would make for a lovely lunch in wine country. Take note, this menu is not available on Fridays and Saturdays.

For the intrigue, go to …

Chiho bistro.

2330 2 nd Ave., Seattle; 206-245-6075, chihobistro.com

Calling all dumpling lovers to this spot, open in Belltown since last June. The SRW menu is offered at both lunch and dinner at $65, and it’s designed to serve two to three people. This included a choice of soup dumplings ( my colleague Tan Vinh praised the mala spicy ones with kurobata pork ), sweet and sour baby back ribs or garlic fried chicken wings, spicy noodles, fried rice and either honey walnut prawns or wagyu beef in Szechuan chili oil. Seems like a veritable feast, and with prices skewing up these days, this is a relatively cheap way to explore the menu on a fun date. Take note, this menu is not available on Saturdays.

Brothers & Co. present Pidgin Cooperative at Fair Isle Brewing

936 NW 49 th St., Seattle; 425-273-4406, pidgincooperative.com

Pidgin Cooperative, run partially by brothers Zachary and Seth Pacleb, is the latest iteration of what began as Ramen and Tacos, a pop-up and farmer’s market booth. The menu at SRW (offered only on Monday and Tuesday evenings) features popcorn sprinkled with Sichuan spices and nutritional yeast, a celeriac and apple salad, spicy lamb biang biang noodle with pickled ginger and bok choy, and a dark fruit cherry blossom butter mochi for $50 per person. Ramen and Tacos was known for complex, delicious flavors created with local, seasonal produce, and this new direction appears to be much of the same.

For a critic’s pick, go to …

Gold coast ghal.

1009 Boren Ave, Seattle; 206-535-4584, goldcoastghal.com

My colleague Bethany Jean Clement loved the peanut stew in her review of this First Hill restaurant. A version of it — made with chicken or oyster mushrooms — is on the three-course $50 tasting menu that chef Tina Fahnbulleh will be offering during SRW. Other options include a hand pie, a melon seed and mixed greens stew called egusi, and a choice between two desserts. When calling for a reservation, know the special menu will not be offered on Fridays and Saturdays.

Walla Walla Steak Co.

13205 N.E. 175 th St., Woodinville; 425-285-3659, wwsteakco.com/woodinville-wa

If you’re in the mood for a swanky date night midweek, check out Walla Walla Steak Co. in the old Woodinville Schoolhouse. I was smitten with the prime rib and the hearth oven chocolate chip cookie on my visit — both of which are available on the restaurant’s $65 per person SRW menu. Also up for grabs on the three-course menu is a smoked salmon chowder, spruce tip linguine, surf and turf and basque cheesecake. Take note, this menu is only available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

12752 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle; 206-588-0267, lotuspondseattle.com

When this North Seattle restaurant opened in the spring of 2022, food critic Tan Vinh called it “ one of the most promising” Vietnamese restaurants to debut in recent years. The SRW menus here are priced at either $20 or $35 per person depending on a two-course or three-course option offered at lunch or dinner. The $35 menu includes a choice of drink followed by spring or fresh rolls, beef pho, hue beef noodle soup or pork vermicelli and grilled banana sticky rice or ice cream for dessert. The $20 menu cuts the appetizers and dessert, keeping the drinks and soup choices.
