Simpson Desert Tours

Simpson desert tours from alice springs, adelaide, birdsville via dalhousie springs and more.

car2-bigreded

The Simpson Desert tours now are available in 7, 9 or 13 days tours and cross the desert via the French Line, WAA Line & QAA Line.

Our 9 day Simpson Desert tours travel a route that combines all three tracks, plus Coulsen Track, Rig Road & Knolls Track and via Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park.

Our extended 13 day tour includes these tracks plus the K1 Line, Madigan’s Line, Birdsville Track and Hay River Tracks and via Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park.

The Simpson Desert is the name given to the desert sand hills area between Birdsville in the South West Corner of Queensland to Dalhousie Springs in the far north of South Australia near the Northern Territory border. It lies across the corners of 3 States – South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The route we take is a Combined Route – a tailored route that enables us to see as much as possible of the area in the one trip, taking in a little of each track, plus different travel directions ie both across and parallel with the sand hills – very different experiences.

Our tours pass through three Australian states – NT, SA and QLD, and Aboriginal lands. Munga-Thirri National Park is the Simpson Desert Region in Queensland. Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Witjira National Park are in South Australia.

Mystery of the Min Min Lights

Numerous stories surround the phenomenon of the Min Min lights of outback Queensland. One bush legend suggests the lights first appeared near the ruins of the old Min Min Hotel, a rough and ready drinking hole on the Boulia—Winton Road, notorious for fleecing its patrons. Built in the 1880’s the infamous pub burned to the ground about 40 years later, leaving nothing but a nearby cemetery. The eerie lights dancing across the plains at night were said to be the dead souls from this desolate graveyard. Although there appears to be no satisfactory scientific explanation for the source of the lights, it is suggested they are luminous balls of gas that seep up from below ground and drift with the wind across the open plains. A range of other theories on the light source includes static electricity, swarms of luminous insects, refracted light and, birds such as barn owls which, like glow worms, are said to be bio-luminescent (producing light from their own bodies).

Min Min Encounter At the visitor information centre in Boulia there is an interesting light show, the Min Min Encounter, which showcases numerous theories about the source of the Min Min Lights.

Looking for a shorter trek?

Looking for a longer trek?

Trek Grade:

We have been conducting the Western Simpson Desert Trek for over 40 years and it's rightly become our classic Simpson Desert trekking experience, and the favourite of many return trekkers.

Being a longer duration than the Simpson Desert Explorer Treks, the WSD Trek really enables you to be absorbed by the landscape and settle into the magical rhythmic walking of the camels.

You will walk alongside our team of packcamels accompanied by 4 cameleers who are your crew for the duration of the trek. Our cameleers are not 'tour guides', they are experienced and seasoned stockmen/women who are specialists in handling and working with camels, and have a wealth of experience in walking the desert and knowledge of its flora & fauna, and are respectful of our First Nations people who call the desert home.

We will be walking in the dune fields of the western Simpson Desert. The landscape consists of towering red-crimson dunes, wide inter-dune corridors, small (usually dry!) creeks, large Breakaway ridges and scattered timber of Coolabah, Bloodwood and Mulga. Spinifex is the dominant plant species, however much of this hardy plant was destroyed in the widespread and destructive 2011/12 bushfires, and many of the dunes and swales are now spinifex-free, which does make for easier walking.

Walking in this landscape is on firm sand and occasional claypans and gibber flats. If the western Simpson receives good soaking rain in late March, there may be a profusion of yellow flowers such as poached-egg daisy & 'Yellowtop' covering the landscape, and supplying our camels with fresh feed.... however it's not until we actually get out there in April 2022 that we will know the extent of any rainfall.

May, June and July is ideal walking weather in Central Australia and over the course of a 5 to 6 hour walking day you would walk approximately between 8 to 10 kilometres.  Our pace of travel is determined by the camels and their ability to negotiate the dunes or other landforms in the landscape. They carry all your personal gear, and all you have to carry is your day pack.

This is a very real, very Australian desert experience. Camels are the perfect cross-country vehicle and so we don't follow roads or tracks, and there is no vehicle back-up. Camps are chosen for the availability of camel feed, and we never camp in the same place twice. And in addition, as we are Australia's only trekking company that specialise in remote desert travel, you won't 'bump into' any other groups of trekkers.

All of our treks are active participation-based experiences and the cameleers will involve you with loading and unloading the camels as much as you wish to be involved. Similarly, your assistance is always greatly welcomed with the numerous camp chores to be done at the end of the day such as collecting firewood or helping to shepherd the camels as they feed.

 Tour Guide Tony

A tour guide can make or break your travel experience. you will spend about 2 to 4  weeks with a guide on these kinds of tours, so you want to make sure that the guide ticks all the boxes. the easiest way to figure this out is to get on the phone and give them a call. tony is more than happy to have a chat about his tours, but more than this, you will get a feeling for who he is and the way he operates. in australia, individual tag along tour guides are not required to be accredited, which we think is crazy. ensure your safety in remote environments by opting for a reputable guide with the necessary qualifications. tony is an accredited savannah guide, ecoguides australia, and tour guides australia certified professional guide, with a cert iv trainer & assessor qualification in 4wd instruction. he also has a degree in tourism and a masters degree in science specialising in wildlife management (and he's a self-confessed "wildlife fanatic"). in addition to this, our business is the only tag along tour operator in australia approved under the savannah guides enterprise accreditation scheme. see what savannah guides is all about at  this link . New Tour for 2025! Beadell Highways Trek. Alice Springs to Coober Pedy. 15 Nights (incl. Surveyor General's Cnr)

$5775 per vehicle incl. 2 people. 8 vehicles max. off-road camper trailers ok. • 14 june - 28 june 2025 - bookings now open. .

Starting with our included first night's accommodation and dinner at Lasseters Crowne Plaza Hotel in Alice Springs, we take on several of the legendary Len Beadell's Central Australian "Highways" on this giant "C-shaped" trek. From Alice, we find the start of the Gary Highway , following this deep into the desert through some remote Aboriginal Communities all the way into WA, before heading abruptly South on the very scenic and seldom travelled Sandy Blight Road . Emerging onto the Great Central Road, we visit the Giles Meteorological Station near Warakurna, and then onto Surveyor General's Corner , on the tri-state border of SA, NT and WA.  Popping back out onto the Great Central once more, we refuel at Warburton before tackling the remote Connie Sue Highway Southwards into the Great Victoria Desert . From Neale Junction, it's a 900 km run East on the Anne Beadell Highway through incredibly remote desert country. Along the way, there are several points of interest, including the most remote fuel stop in Australia, Ilkurlka Roadhouse, and the Emu Field Nuclear Test Area . We emerge back out into "civilisation" on the Stuart Highway at Coober Pedy, where we will have a night in the underground hotel, and our final dinner together.  Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour - it is very remote and the corrugations can be quite rough. The tour includes vehicle hire for 12 days, but you can extend your rental if you want to do some extra exploring while you're there. It's also fully catered, so you don't have to worry about how to keep your food cold during the day. Flights to and from Christchurch are not included in the tour cost. LIVE IN NEW ZEALAND AND/OR HAVE YOUR OWN VEHICLE?  If you have your own vehicle in NZ, you are welcome to come along. We will amend the tour price accordingly. HOW ABOUT A PRIVATE TOUR OPTION?  If you get a group of 10 - 12 people together, we can arrange a tour with all manner of optional extras and varied itineraries depending on what you would like to do (prices vary).  FIND OUT MORE HERE

simpson desert 4wd tours

Along with our Madigan line tour , we offer an alternative, a 13 day Simpson Desert Loop including Hay River track adventure — one of Adam’s favourite trips. During this trip, you will visit the geographical centre of Australia and visit the marker post of the early explorers … more on this when you book the tour!

The Simpson Desert contains the world’s longest parallel sand dunes. These north-south-oriented dunes are static, held in position by vegetation and varying in height from 3 to more than 30 metres. The most famous dune, Nappanerica or Big Red, is 40 metres in height.

Over the years we have had a lot of guests who have requested a Simpson Desert tour that starts and finishes in the same location, a loop, so we came up with this tour. And as we said earlier, a favourite of Adams! We meet up the night prior to departure in the iconic Birdsville hotel, where a delicious meal can be purchased. It’s a great place to meet your fellow travellers and a good night will be had by all. Most guests will stay at the Caravan park tonight, but if you want, why not book a room at the historic hotel?

The first morning of the tour for many is the most exciting, this is what you have been planning and dreaming about…your first sand dune! Air down in the tyres and we are into it, only a thousand or so more to navigate before Alice Springs! Tonight you will experience those magnificent desert stars, sitting around the fire and taking in natures light show.

We spend the next couple of days navigating the desert before popping out at a little tin shed oasis called Mount Dare, hot showers, hot food and a shed full of other travellers who you are able to yarn with over a beer at the bar.

Today we drive some great outback tracks , stopping in at the Geographical centre of Australia before heading to one of our favourite camp spots at a remote marker post, watching the sun set and rise, giving Uluru a run for its money any day of the week!

From here, the next day is an easy run to Alice Springs, driving past the airport, and if Covid is still impacting the worlds airlines and you love planes the sight here will amaze you, with planes parked nose to tail everywhere! There is so much to see and do in Alice Springs…enjoy your time, stock up and visit the old Telegraph station, one of the museums or the botanical gardens.

After the refresh of Alice we head out to the East Macdonnell ranges and here we will go as far as we can and stay the night a Ruby Gap, always stunning and a great drive into.

From here we join the Binns track for a while, winding our way to our last fuel stop before the beginning of the Hay River track. More wonderful night skies and exciting tracks before returning to our start point of Birdsville.

What a trip you have just travelled, through two states and a territory and returning back to our start point. On the way you have collected new friends and memories that will live with you forever.

SIMPSON DESERT & OUTBACK

Put this one on your bucket list!! Think 4WD traversing of 1100 sand dunes including conquering the famous Big Red, perfect star lit nights and an end of day campfire with a glass of red.

Tag-along with us on this iconic outback tour, crossing the Simpson Desert in the heart of Australia. We travel through the QLD outback, checking out historic sites of the explorers Burke & Wills along the way, before arriving in Birdsville.

The real 4WD adventure begins as we leave Birdsville QLD and travel west into the Simpson Desert where you we will be totally self-sufficient and "off the grid" for the next 4 to 5 days travelling over some of the 1100 parallel sand dunes, camping at the end of each day in totally secluded locations with plenty of time to stop for sightseeing and photos along the way. We will visit Dalhousie Springs for a swim & chance to wash off some dust in the natural hot springs.

Visiting the ruins of Dalhousie Homestead established in 1872 will allow you to witness and imagine a life in this harsh outback climate before heading into Mt Dare for a chance to restock and refuel along with hot showers and a pub style meal.

From here you can choose to say good-bye & travel on to Alice Springs or south towards Adelaide and home or better still stay with us as we head back to Birdsville via the Madigan Line in the Northern Territory. This part of the adventure travels via the outback station of Old Andado with the original homestead and outbuildings able to be inspected to gain an insight into outback life in the early 1900's.

For the next 4 to 5 days, we then follow the route taken by Dr Cecil Madigan in 1939 with his party of nine, supported by camels, as he crossed the desert as part of a scientific expedition of the area.  You will be amazed at the incredible outback scenery as you travel along one of Australia's most remote desert tracks.

Simpson Desert Ultimate Guide

A trip to the simpson desert is the ultimate outback adventure. .

From my very first visit to the Simpson Desert back in 2002, I have been captivated by this deeply beautiful and moving place.

The feeling of hundreds of kilometres of dunes stretching out before you beneath an immense blue sky, where few people dare to venture is something you’ll never forget.

So on this page, we’ve put together an overview of this iconic desert, packed with information and links that you’ll need if you’re planning a trip into the Simpson.

The Simpson is made up of 1100 parallel sand dunes that run north-north-west to south-south-east.

Some of these dunes are 200 kilometres long, and tracks like the Old Andado, Colson or Hay River tracks have been made in the swales (the dips) of the dunes and run for tens of kilometres.

Far from being desolate, the Simpson is home to an incredible array of birds, animals and plants. In certain places like Purnie Bore , underground water bubbles to the surface and turns the desert into an oasis where life thrives.

The Simpson Desert is both beautiful AND challenging. If you’re thinking about exploring this magic place, you’ll need to be VERY well prepared.

Which is why we’ve created the Simpson Desert Ultimate Guide to help you start planning your adventure.

Quick Facts

Here are some BIG Simpson Facts:

  • Area: 170,000 sq kilometres
  • Fourth largest desert in Australia
  • The Simpson has the longest parallel dunes in the world
  • Some dunes are 200km long
  • Estimated number of parallel sand dunes: 1100+
  • The tallest dune is Nappanerica or Big Red. It’s 40 metres high!
  • Annual rainfall ranges from 150-200mm
  • Temperatures ranging from -2 Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius have been recorded

Where is it?

The Simpson is situated in the far north of South Australia near Lake Eyre, and extends north into the Northern Territory for almost 300km all the way to the Plenty Highway, and east into Queensland to Birdsville.

Simpson Desert, Aboriginal culture, Outback Australia, 4WD

The Simpson Desert is BIG!

It takes up 170,000 square kilometres. It straddles three states: the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland.

There are no towns or cities in the desert ; only a hand full of Aboriginal Outstations in the north and north-west, and a few pastoral stations.

Click here to download a free location map

Want maps you can buy that show you all the Great Desert Tracks? You can find them here .

There are hundreds of kilometres between fuel, food and water stops on most of the crossings.

If you’re planning a crossing, you’ll absolutely need a well-prepared 4WD and previous 4WDing experience.

However, there’s also ways to experience the Simpson Desert WITHOUT needing to weeks to see it or advanced 4WDing skills (we’ll show you how below).

Getting there

Via the Northern Territory:

  • Leave the Stuart Highway at Kulgera, and head to Finke, then drive to New Crown Station.
  • Cross into South Australia near Charlotte Waters and head on to Mt Dare Homestead (located in Witjira National Park)
  • Then, travel via Dalhousie Springs and Spring Creek to Purnie Bore.

Via Oodnadatta:

  • Travel from Hamilton Station to Mt Dare or via the Pedirka Desert to Dalhousie Springs.
  • From Dalhousie Springs, travel via Spring Creek then Purnie Bore.

Via Birdsville:

  • Route 1: Travel from Birdsville along the QAA line to Poeppel Corner. This is a spectacular part of the desert where you’ll be travelling over some massive dunes! Going can be slow, so take your time and enjoy the trip!
  • Route 2: Head along the Shire road which leaves the inside Birdsville Track southwest of Birdsville. Turn onto the QAA Line at the Big Red sand dune 33km from Birdsville and head west into the desert.

National Parks

Much of the Simpson is protected within four national parks (or conservation reserves), protecting a total of 54,338 square kilometres of land.

This sounds like a lot, but when you remember that the Simpson covers almost 200,000 square kilometres, this means that only a quarter of the desert is protected.

These national parks are:

  • Witjira National Park
  • Simpson Desert Regional Reserve
  • Simpson Desert Conservation Reserve
  • Simpson Desert National Park

Click on the links above to learn more about each park, how to get there, facilities, what to see and do.

The largest portion of the desert, which lies in the Northern Territory, is now Aboriginal Land, and you’ll need various permits to enter it.

One very popular track which travels through Aboriginal Land is the Hay River Track.

Permits for the Hay River Track are relatively easy to get are available via the Central Land Council. You can apply online here.

If you’re planning on crossing the Simpson Desert via any of the tracks which travel through South Australia, such as the French Line, the QAA Line or the WAA Line, you’ll need to purchase a Desert Parks Pass from the South Australian Parks and Wildlife Service.

Click here to download and purchase a Desert Parks Pass (link takes you to a SA government website). At the time of writing, the cost of the pass was $171.

Be aware that all national parks in the Simpson Desert are closed in summer, from 1 December-15 March.

That’s not a typo, either. Remember: in outback Australia, summer goes from December through March.

This is just a glimpse the Simpson’s history:

  • The Lower Southern Arrernte, Wangkangarru and sometimes, Jeljendi Aboriginal peoples have lived in the Simpson Desert for at least 5000 years
  • The Wangkangurru people maintained a series of wells in the east of the desert which allowed them to live permanently in the Simpson
  • One of the first European (white) people to traverse the Simpson from south to north was David Lindsay in 1886
  • Pastoralist ,Ted Colson, and Aboriginal man, Peter Ains, made a crossing of the desert from west to east and back again in 1936
  • Cecil Madigan named the desert ‘the Simpson’ in 1929
  • Madigan made his famous Simpson Desert Crossing in 1939
  • In early 1960s, the French Petroleum Company made a series of exploration tracks which have now become magnets for 4WD enthusiasts
  • The Simpson Desert Conservation Park in South Australia was the first reserve in the desert, declared in 1967
  • The Simpson Desert Land Claim, heard in 2009, handed back 18,000km of land to the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of part of the Simpson Desert in the Northern Territory

The Simpson Desert climate can be described as ‘arid’.

Its rainfall is low, averaging only 150mm per year. Weather is very hot in summer, but temperate in winter. Winter nights often fall below freezing.

In other words, the climate is one of extremes.

Temperatures average 36-39C in summer and 18-24C in winter. However, summer temperatures of 50C have been recorded!

Ranger colleagues have experienced temperatures of 50C during summer whilst camping at the Mac Clarke Conservation Reserve on the Simpson’s eastern edge, and have, unfortunately, had to sleep in them! We don’t recommend this!

January and February are the hottest months of the year.

July is generally the coolest month in the Simpson. The temperature can drop below freezing, and frosts occur on 50% of mornings.

This table shows the average minimum and maximum temperatures for each month.

Rainfall varies widely in the Outback, and the Simpson’s rainfall is one of the lowest in Australia.

The main influence upon rainfall is tropical lows and cyclones.

That’s right. If there’s a cyclone (a hurricane) in the Kimberly region of Western Australia, it might travel all the way down through the Red Centre to the Simpson Desert.

The Simpson Desert is at the absolute maximum extent of these tropical rain events. It’s also a long way inland, away from the ocean and there are no large mountain ranges to attract clouds.

Therefore, the Simpson Desert climate relies on the tail-end of tropical rainfall events.

Cyclones and other tropical weather patterns lose their puff as they travel south over the Tanami and Alice Springs, so predictably, the Simpson Desert’s rainfall is one of the lowest in Australia.

However, rain can fall at anytime in the Simpson Desert. Some years, no rain falls at all, whilst in other years (like 2010 -2011), there is widespread flooding!

It can also get quite windy at certain times of the year. Dust storms are infrequent, but do occur about 4 -5 times per year.

During October to March when it’s warmer, most of the winds come from the southeast.

In autumn (fall) and winter, it tends to be less windy.

However, like many parts of Australia, the period from October- December can be quite windy, although gales are rare.

Aboriginal people around Alice Springs often call this the ‘sickness’ season, as many people get eye, ear, nose and throat infections at this time of the year, which are thought to be caused by the wind.

When to Visit

May, June and July are the ideal times to visit.

In June and July, you can expect clear days with perfect blue skies, and temperatures of around 20C. The nights often fall below 0C (30F), so make sure you take plenty of warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag.

However, we have to say that there is nothing like a July night in the Simpson Desert, spent sleeping under the stars.

The best views on Earth of the Milky Way are to be found here! You won’t believe the number of stars you’ll see.

Maps and Guidebooks

In this section, we’ll recommend the resources we’ve found most helpful in our explorations of the Simpson Desert.

Simpson Desert Aboriginal people

If you’d like to learn more about the history, exploration, flora and fauna of the desert, then The Simpson Desert by Mark Shephard is the ultimate book to read.

Unfortunately, Shephard’s very enjoyable book (it’s a must for all Simpson Desert fans!) is long out of print. Copies sell occasionally on Ebay and through book collectors at around $130 AUD.

However, if you live in Australia, you might be able to find it at a local library, or have your local library order it in.

Desert Tracks Atlas

simpson desert 4wd tours

Hema’s Great Desert Tracks Map Pack   is the ultimate outback track guide. As well as the Simpson Desert, it covers every desert track right across Australia.

However, its coverage of the Simpson is excellent. You’ll find lots of information on all of the tracks which cross the desert, what to take, how to prepare your vehicle, and an overview of the flora, fauna and cultural history of this fascinating place.

This is a large format, r4 map pack printed on specially coated paper to make it hard wearing. In other words, it’s especially suited to bumping along in the back of a 4WD across the desert.

If you are planning a trip to the desert, DO NOT leave home without this map pack.

In fact, we’d advise that you buy this book before you go to do all of your trip planning.

Whether you’re a ‘desert lover’ (AKA seriphile) or just someone looking for a serious 4WD journey, this informative guide with its easy-to-follow maps, is an indispensable companion.

simpson desert 4wd tours

Another of our favourites is Hema’s Simpson Desert Map .

Just like the Hema Desert Tracks Guide, Hema’s Simpson Desert Map is packed with must-know details.

You’ll find information on road distances, fuel stops, supplies and accommodation, GPS coordinates, info about track conditions, tips for driving, points of interest, notes about history, wildlife and Aboriginal culture.

The Simpson Desert really is a place that captures the heart. Make sure you visit some of the other pages in this section of the website for more Simpson Desert Facts.

Itinerary & Accommodation Snapshot

Please check your required arrival time with the office before booking your flights.

Today you will be greeted by our friendly and professional Tour Directors. After checking in to the Mercure Alice Springs Resort, the remainder of the day can be spent at your leisure. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner and tour briefing at the hotel restaurant. Meal (D)

Today the adventure begins as we depart Alice Springs and follow the Old Ghan Railway south. Stop to view the Ewaninga Rock Carvings, a highly-concentrated series of petroglyphs which provide a valuable link to the activities of early Arrernte Aboriginal people. Sandstone outcrops form natural galleries which contain a great variety of symbols and motifs.

Later this morning we continue heading south to Titjikala and visit the Tapatjatjaka Art and Craft Centre. Browse through the gallery and chat to some of the artists before heading west towards the Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve. Here we'll set up camp and your crew will help you get familiarised with the equipment. Late this afternoon, enjoy a walk to Chambers Pillar for a magnificent desert sunset.  Meals (B.L.D)

This morning we depart Chambers Pillar and once again follow the Old Ghan Railway south. Your knowledgeable guides will tell you all about this fascinating part of Australian history as you head towards Finke.

At Finke we will top up with fuel before heading through Old Crown station. Here the landscape opens up and we start to cross our first large dunes on our way to Old Andado.

At Old Andado we will learn about the stations somewhat tragic history. The homestead is frozen in time and very little has changed since its last inhabitant Molly Clarke left.

After some time exploring the station buildings, we will move on to visit some of Australia’s rarest trees at the Mac Clark Acacia Peuce Conservation Reserve. These trees once covered large areas of land that surrounds the Simpson Desert. Today they only survive at two other sites near Birdsville and Boulia.

Tonight, we will camp among the sand dunes at Madigan Camp 1A. Meals   (B.L.D)

Today we begin crossing one of the least travelled tracks across the Simpson Desert. We follow the path of Cecil Madigan and his scientific expedition across the here in 1939. Although he was not the first white man to cross the desert, he became known as one of the last classic explorers of Australia.

The dunes here are frequent and the terrain slow going. With detailed planning and preparation Madigan’s expedition took 25 days to travel 570 kilometres from Old Andado to Birdsville.

He did it on foot and with camels. With our G-Wagons we will take just 4 days averaging not much more than 20kph. Travelling slowly though the desert will give us plenty of opportunity to view the desert flora and fauna. On a good season the wildflowers will be abundant, and if we are really lucky, we may get a glimpse of the elusive Eyrean grasswren. Meals   (B.L.D)

As Day 4. Meals   (B.L.D)

Continuing along the Madigan Line we will travel on part of the Hay River Track. The Hay River was an ancient travelling route for Aboriginal people moving across the desert from north to south.

Evidence of their stone tool making sites still exist here. Although usually dry there are numerous Coolabah trees marking the path of the river. As we travel towards Queensland border and the Munga-Thirri National Park the vegetation will begin to change.

Large stands of Gidgee trees appear between the sand dunes. Camels often frequent these areas so keep a sharp eye out as we crest each dune.

Tonight, we will camp among the fragrant Gidgee Trees. Meals   (B.L.D)

Today we will swing south along the Madigan Line through Adria Downs Station. Adria Downs is private property and Outback Spirit has received special permission to traverse through the station.

We will visit the Annandale Station ruins; the first QLD station purchased by Sir Sidney Kidman in 1896. Continuing south along Eyre Creek we will meet up with the QAA Line for the final leg to Birdsville.

The sand dunes here are much larger than what we have seen so far with spectacular views. Depending on previous traffic and how dry it is these dunes can become quite a challenge.

Our final dune for the day will be Napperanica (Big Red). For the adventurous and if conditions are right, we may have a go at the ‘hard way’. We will take a little time to enjoy the late afternoon views on the dune before hitting the bitumen and onto Birdsville.

We will have two nights at the Birdsville Hotel where we can enjoy a pub meal and a cold beer. The former founder of Outback Spirit, Courtney Ellis now owns and operates this iconic property. Meals   (B.L.D)

Today is a day of rest in Birdsville for passengers and crew alike. Catch up on washing, visit some of the sights around town or wander down to the edge of the Diamantina River. Our meals for the day will be at the hotel.  Meals   (B.L.D)

Leaving Birdsville, we will return to Big Red and spend a little time soaking up the view in the morning light. We will continue back to Eyre Creek and tackle the same QAA Line dunes in reverse.

Due to the prevailing winds the dunes are steeper when travelling from East to West and after re-stocking in Birdsville even more challenging.

The QAA Line is one of hundreds of mostly straight tracks made in the desert by oil exploration expeditions as early as the 1960’s.

The ‘shot lines’ were usually made with bulldozers, cleared and smoothed to allow access to seismic equipment. Sensors would be laid and explosive shots detonated to listen to echoes of possible resources under the ground.

Fortunately for us no viable quantities of resources were found. Today comparatively few of these exploratory tracks remain and are kept open simply by the tourist traffic. The QAA was originally kept open for access to Poeppel Corner from Birdsville.

Towards the end of the day, we will come across the some of the larger, and sometimes muddy salt lakes of the Simpson Desert. If necessary, we will pick our way through the drier tracks and skirt around the edges of the lakes before camping on higher ground near Poeppel Corner. Meals   (B.L.D)

Beginning the day, we visit three states at once and learn about why the surveyor Poeppel placed the original post in the wrong spot. Continuing on we will travel along the French Line visiting the geological anomaly of the Approdinna Attora Knolls. Standing out amongst the red sand, these two flat topped hills of white gypseous rock were once dunes formed of flour gypsum that later hardened to their present form. Today they offer some of the best views in the Simpson.

From here we have a few options of tracks to make our way across the deeper part of the desert. Depending on conditions we may take the more southern and difficult WAA Line.

Our camp sites for the next two nights will be among the Simpson’s big sand dunes. A climb to the top of the nearest dune at sunset is well worth the effort; the breathtaking view and change in colours a true feast for the eyes.

In the evening, enjoy sitting around the campfire as your crew prepare dinner and explain the fascinating landscape. On clear nights, star gazing is truly an incredible experience. Meals   (B.L.D)

As Day 10. Meals   (B.L.D)

The sand dunes will begin to get smaller as we reach the end of the French Line and visit Purnee Bore. At 1.9km deep and was made by the French Petroleum Company when exploring for oil in 1963. Artesian Basin water still flows out of the bore and creates a rare oasis in the desert.

Leaving the sand dunes, we will move on towards Dalhousie Springs for a well-earned soak in the naturally heated artesian water that rises naturally to the surface through underground fault lines.

This popular spot has a campground, ranger station and change room. The springs themselves have easy access via stairs so you can relax in the water with minimal effort.

After drying off and some lunch we will continue on through the ever-changing landscape towards Mt Dare where we will camp for the night and have a meal at the infamous Mt Dare Hotel.

No doubt there will be other travellers here celebrating their crossing of the Simpson. Meals   (B.L.D)

Returning to civilisation, we pack up camp for the final time and exit the Witjira National Park saying goodbye to South Australia and head to the ruins of Charlotte Waters. This was the site of an old Telegraph Repeater station built in 1872.

Continuing north we will meet up with the road to Finke and make our way back along the Old Ghan Railway, before re-joining the main track and set our sights for Alice Springs.

Arriving mid-afternoon, we check in the Mercure Alice Springs for the final night of our adventure. Enjoy a celebratory dinner together and relive the expedition with your fellow travellers. Meals   (B.L.D)

After breakfast this morning you’ll be transferred to the airport or your accommodation if staying on.  (B)
