Tommy Fleetwood: ‘Lots of us talk about LIV so I wanted to see it’
Popular English golfer explains the reason behind visiting breakaway tour which heightened speculation over his future
G olf’s rich tapestry is demonstrated by Tommy Fleetwood’s start to 2024. The Englishman opened the year by seeing off Rory McIlroy to win in dramatic circumstances in Dubai . His subsequent visit to LIV Golf’s event in Las Vegas triggered a social media frenzy, given the interest the rebel circuit has been known to have in Fleetwood in the past. Fleetwood will begin a three-week US tournament stretch – which includes the Masters – from Thursday. Thereafter, he will caddie for his stepson in a Challenge Tour competition in Abu Dhabi.
Fleetwood’s LIV stop-off was perfectly innocent. The 33‑year‑old was in Nevada visiting his coach, Butch Harmon. Still, it was notable that Fleetwood was relaxed enough in his own mind regarding speculation that he dropped by the Las Vegas Country Club.
“I really didn’t think that much about it,” Fleetwood says. “I was over there, lots of us talk about LIV but never see it so I wanted to see what a tournament was like. There are also so many people there that we don’t see any more, who I would still class as friends. Players, people who work on the tour, my trainer works there. So I had a free morning, went for a few hours and that was it.”
Tyrrell Hatton’s switch to LIV after the DP World Tour’s Middle East swing arrived at a time when the Saudi Arabian-backed league also had eyes on Fleetwood. Thus far, LIV has failed to make further inroads into the European Ryder Cup team by coaxing the charismatic Fleetwood. His appearance in Vegas, though, sent golf’s chattering classes into overdrive. The man himself shrugs and smiles about that situation.
“It was pretty obvious that would happen but it is difficult when you know there is nothing to it and a lot of people want to make something of it,” Fleetwood says. “That’s just the way things are. I didn’t want to feel like I couldn’t go just because people would say things. I think it came across that I just wanted to go and see friends and that really was the main thing. It was nice to see a lot of people.”
Fleetwood can easily handle the background noise. “I obviously know what I am doing, where I am playing. You can’t do much about what’s said elsewhere. It was the same as going to that event, I knew why I was there. I don’t find it distracting at all.”
So what was Fleetwood’s verdict? He readily admits he struggles to watch golf – “it’s pretty slow, I much prefer playing” – but was there a marked difference to the DP World Tour or PGA Tour he knows so well? “They are obviously doing pretty well for what they are,” he says. “The players seem to enjoy it, seem to enjoy playing on that tour; one of the first things I noticed was that everybody seems happy, chilled, relaxed.
“There are certain things I wasn’t used to; the music, I don’t know how I would feel about playing with that. Beyond that my biggest takeaway was that it was just another golf tournament. Everyone seemed very professional and working very hard. It’s basically just a bunch of people who you knew out here that are now there. So many things have just carried over.”
after newsletter promotion
A Fleetwood success at Augusta National would be among the most popular Masters outcomes. Since 2022, his major performances have started to trend upwards again. The Southport man should take it as a compliment that he is regarded as one of the finest talents of this generation without a major title to his name. Fleetwood’s supreme iron play and shot‑shaping ability should always work well at Augusta.
Thereafter, and following a PGA Tour stop off at Hilton Head, Fleetwood will take on a different golf role. His stepson, Oscar Craig, was victorious at the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open in February. Fleetwood and his family are now based in Dubai; the world No 12 has resisted temptation to make the two-hour drive with young Oscar in contention. “We were going to go at the weekend but he was doing well and I didn’t want to turn up and jinx it,” Fleetwood says. “He was there with friends. He called when he finished to say he had won, I was on the range with our other boy, Mo, and he was so chuffed. Everyone was.”
Craig has secured a spot in the Challenge Tour’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat, where Fleetwood will assume caddying duties. “I am looking forward to it,” Fleetwood says. “I spoke to Oscar about it, I didn’t want to be a distraction to him but he wanted me to do it which is great.”

2023 DP World Tour Championship: Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland in pursuit after Round 2 in Dubai
Nicolai hojgaard leads after two rounds, but some heavy hitters are among those on the chase.
Nicolai Hojgaard commands the solo lead at 11 under through two rounds of action at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship. The young Dane has built a two-stroke gap between himself and the field following rounds of 66-67 with the players in pursuit being some of those he grew closest to at this year's Ryder Cup.
"I feel like [a win is] the only thing I missed this season, but there's two rounds to go," said Hojgaard. "There's a lot of really good players in this field I know that's going to be in the hunt the next few days, and I'm going to keep grinding as much as I can and put myself around, hopefully, and we'll see on Sunday."
Hojgaard's European teammate from Marco Simone, Tommy Fleetwood, has eyes on polishing off a fantastic statistical season with a win of his own at Jumeriah Estates in Dubai. A relatively new resident of the area, the Englishman leads the field with 14 birdies and stands at 9 under at the halfway point.
"It's always great to be here," said Fleetwood. "I don't really care what you do in your career, I feel like it means a lot to actually make this event and have the chance to play for this tournament. Of course, it's close to my heart this one. I'm just looking forward to the weekend. I always feel like it brings out great winners, great champions, so I have put myself there or there abouts. The ultimate goal is to be one of those, to have your name on that trophy … anytime you're in contention in a tournament like this, the final one of the season, it is really, really nice."
A victory for Fleetwood is long overdue. Experiencing close calls at the Canadian Open, FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW PGA Championship, the 32-year-old continues to put himself in with a chance. While he has not been able to convert, his confidence persists.
It will be a difficult task for Fleetwood who will not only need to contend with Hojgaard and his two-stroke lead but also Viktor Hovland, who sits at 9 under as well. A man who needs no added confidence, the 2023 FedEx Cup champion is once again in contention at a big-time tournament heading into the weekend.
"I still feel like my iron game is not as sharp as it should be," said Hovland. "I'm hitting a lot of greens and I'm giving myself a lot of looks, but the ball is still going so far that it's hard to really dial in the distances. I'm playing really solid, chipping it good, driving it good and putting it good."
Hovland's game should only improve as the tournament progresses. Playing for the first time since the Ryder Cup, the Norwegian had a rusty go of things with an opening 69. Looking much better Friday with a seven-birdie 66, the 26-year-old has given himself the opportunity to capture his fifth trophy in the last 11 months and put an emphatic bow on a career year.

Tommy Fleetwood working with former Augusta National caddie master
Fleetwood’s veteran caddie ian finnis sidelined at masters due to illness.
Change Text Size
Tommy Fleetwood won’t have his longtime caddie alongside him at this week’s Masters, but he’ll be privy to local knowledge as he eyes his first major title.
With his caddie Ian Finnis sidelined due to illness, Fleetwood will employ former Augusta National caddie master Gray Moore for this week’s competition. Moore has since retired from that role, per the Augusta Chronicle, to work as a regular caddie at the club.
This marks just the second time in eight years that Finnis won’t caddie for Fleetwood at a major, Fleetwood said Wednesday at Augusta National. Fleetwood’s dad caddied at the 2018 U.S. Open – the week after Finnis’ son was born. “Other than that, he’s done every tournament with me,” Fleetwood said Wednesday.
“He’s not been well all year,” Fleetwood continued. “At the moment he's at home trying to recover and get the right treatment … We just wish him all the best. The sooner he can get better, the better for all of us. Everybody has been asking about him, which has been great. I know he'll be desperate to come back out here as soon as possible.”
Fleetwood has previously spent time with Moore at Augusta National, comparing notes in advance of prior Masters Tournaments. Fleetwood, 33, has knocked on the door in several major championships to date – he has compiled six top-five finishes – but has yet to break through for his first major title. He has made six cuts in seven prior Masters starts, his best result coming in 2022 (T14).
“The first two or three years that I came here, I always had Gray in practice and would always sit and speak to him,” Fleetwood said of Moore. “So I've known him well for the last few years and I just asked if he could do it this week.”
Finnis was also sidelined for last week’s Valero Texas Open, in which Fleetwood finished T7 with Adrian Rietveld on the bag – a senior manager at TaylorMade who works closely with Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler on equipment issues.
Tommy Fleetwood finishes with birdie on No. 18 at Valero
Fleetwood was hopeful at the time that Finnis would feel healthy enough for the Masters, but that, unfortunately, proved not the case.
Some little things are different without Finnis by his side. Fleetwood doesn’t normally look at the weather forecast, he said, but this week he has ensured to keep tabs himself.
The most important thing, of course, is that Finnis returns to full health soon. In the meantime, Fleetwood is in good hands for his eighth Masters.
“It’s definitely very, very different,” Fleetwood said of competing without Finnis. “Last week was weird just going out there and doing I guess so many things that he would … There is definitely a comfort, huge comfort level when he's out on the course with me.
“It’s just a bit weird really. But I'm far more bothered about him getting better and his health being right. He's definitely in the right place at the moment … I look forward to when he does get back out.”

Tommy Fleetwood turns to ‘Mr Augusta’ after another caddie withdrawal at the Masters
Tommy Fleetwood has become the second English golfer at the Masters to lose his caddie for the week, after Tyrrell Hatton also had to enlist an emergency replacement.
Fleetwood’s bagman, Ian Finnis, is back in England recovering from a chest infection that has plagued him for most of the season, while Mick Donaghy is nursing a badly bruised shoulder after a fall at the weekend.
While Hatton has flown in Hugo Dobson – a former teammate on the England Under-18 team who plays on the satellite Tours – Fleetwood has decided to utilise the services of a hugely popular character known as “Mr Augusta”.
Gray Moore is the former caddie master at the National and after 30 years of service is something of a legend at the club. He has worked for Tom Watson at the Masters and has formed a connection with Fleetwood, who sought his advice when he first played the course a decade ago.
Finnis, the husband of former England goalkeeper Rachel Finnis-Brown, has been with Fleetwood for eight years. A fine golfer in his own right, he has known Fleetwood since they were teenagers. In their time together, Fleetwood has lifted six titles with Finnis, won the DP World Tour order of merit, finished second in two majors and appeared in three Ryder Cups.
Fleetwood has accredited his fellow Everton fan with being a huge factor in his rise. However, the duo have yet to enjoy a top 10 at the Masters, their best finish in seven appearances, a tie for 14th two years ago.
With only five players from England in the field it is a remarkable coincidence that two are without their right-hand man. And Danny Willett, the 2016 champion, is not even certain if he will yet tee it up in Thursday’s first round. He underwent shoulder surgery seven months ago and has not played competitively since.
“It’s still touch and go, but I think I’ll be ok,” Willett said. “I really want to, of course. It’s Augusta. I love it here. But I don’t want to play unless I can do myself justice.”
If Willett does not play, then it will mean the UK has only five representatives in the field – the fewest in 31 years.

'Who's the little kid on the range?' That would be 15-year-old Miles Russell of Jax Beach
Russell is coming off a top 20 in korn ferry tour's lecom suncoast open and has entered this week's veritex bank championship in arlington, texas.
Miles Russell has made national news on CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and the Washington Post.
Every internationally known golf media outlet wrote about every round the Jacksonville Beach native played in last week's Korn Ferry Tour LECOM Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, when he became the youngest player to make the cut on the PGA Tour's Pathway Tour, at the age of 15.
Finishing with a flourish: Miles Russell caps memorable week with 66 at LECOM Suncoast Classic
"Simply unheard of," said national golf writer Dan Rapaport.
Phil Mickelson weighed in on X, one left-hander to another, in his praise for Russell's performance.
As an indication of the viral nature of Russell's weekend on social media, a video of two of his birdies on Sunday posted by the Korn Ferry Tour had nearly 150,000 views by Monday, and a chart of his stock yardages with each club had more than 112,000 views.
Mickelson's shout-out to Russell had nearly 350,000 views by Monday.
And now Russell is going to play two — at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, for the Korn Ferry Tour's Veritex Bank Championship, which begins on Thursday.
Russell gets another start with a tie for 20th
While Russell got into the field at the LECOM Classic through a sponsor invitation, he earned his way in this week by tying for 20th at the Lakewood National Commander Course. Russell birdied seven of 10 holes at one point, including four of five, and with a 66 moved to a tie for 48th at the start of the day to a tie for 20th.
The Korn Ferry Tour gives spots in the next event to anyone who finishes among the top-25, if not otherwise eligible. Russell shot four under-par rounds and finished at 14-under 270.
Among the players Russell beat last week were past PGA Tour winners Chad Campbell, Fabian Gomez and Kevin Stadler, and PGA Tour veterans Spencer Levin, Tag Ridings, Doc Redman and Sam Saunders.
"It was an awesome week. It was a blast," Russell said during his post-round interview session on Sunday. "Especially for my first one. You may get a couple weird looks, like, 'Who's the little kid on the range?' But, you know, everybody was so nice and so helpful with everything."
Russell said he's trying to soak in the experience.
"I just try to kind of go with flow and take it as it comes to me," he said. "I'm trying to just stay cool. I was able to hit some good shots in the right moments."
Russell, who has been modest in the past year when his game has taken off to unexpected heights, still said he gained confidence from his experience in a high-level professional event.
"When I play well, I think I can compete with some of the better pros," he said. "But this week I played well and I think it kind of showed it a little bit. But good play is always good, and definitely confidence-boosting to finish where we're going to finish today."
Miles Russell has had a whirlwind eight months
Since Augusta of 2023, Russell has become the youngest to win the Junior Players (and the first resident of the First Coast), won the Junior PGA by seven shots, played in the Junior Ryder Cup and became the youngest to win the AJGA Player of the Year Award.
He leads the American Junior Presidents Cup points list and is one of three Florida players on the first United States Golf Association Junior National team.
Russell has given no indication he intends to turn professional at his young age. He has exemptions to the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior and may still have other aspirations in amateur golf such as playing on the Walker Cup.
He cannot be a full PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour member until he is 18 years old. He can play through sponsor invitations, Monday qualifiers and categories such as a top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour and a top 10 on the PGA Tour for subsequent events, but is capped at 12 starts per year, whether he turns pro or remains an amateur.
There is no age restriction on turning professional and accepting prize money. He also can play in major championships. None have an age requirement.
Russell is being home-schooled and is permitted to accept NIL opportunities without jeopardizing his amateur status.
For now, Russell is enjoying the ride. He also said he might not be the last teen-aged prodigy in golf.
"It's a cool record to break," he said. "I don't know how much longer ... people are getting so good, so young. It could hold out for a week, you never know, but it's pretty cool right now."

2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Full Field: The PGA Tour's Two-Man Team Game
Irishmen Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy team up for the first time at TPC Louisiana.
- Author: John Schwarb
Much of the country is finally into the golf season, and for many players that means weekend pairs games. Pick a partner and take on another two-player team, either in a better-ball format or (if you want to see how much you really like your partner) alternate shot.
This week, the PGA Tour does the same thing.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a refreshing change from weekly Tour individual stroke play, with 80 teams of two playing the above two formats at TPC Louisiana. The first and third rounds are better ball and the second and fourth are alternate shot, with a cut after 36 holes.
Davis Riley (Titleist hat) and Nick Hardy won the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports
The format always makes for interesting teams, from longtime friends to countrymen to completely random pairings.
Rory McIlroy is making his first appearance at TPC Louisiana, teaming up with fellow Irishman and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. They’ll see some familiar faces including their Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, playing with his European assistant captain Francesco Molinari, as well as English brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick.
Brothers and Tour rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody are a team, while at the other end of the age spectrum are Matt Kuchar and PGA Tour Champions regular Steve Stricker. Billy Horschel, who has won the Zurich when it was an individual event as well as a team event, has a new partner in Tyson Alexander, a fellow University of Florida alum.
Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, close friends and frequent partners on U.S. Cup teams, won the Zurich in 2022 and return. Defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley are also back.
Winners earn FedEx Cup points and two-year Tour exemptions, but do not receive Masters invitations or world ranking points.
