In conjunction with the Australian tour announcement, The National have today dropped a new release ‘ Laugh Track’, the surprise second half of a double album which began with ‘First Two Pages Of Frankenstein’ released in April this year. The sibling records mark albums nine and ten for The National and are a continuing testament to the more than two decades the band have delivered us songs of immense pathos and beauty.

Their lengthy career has led to extraordinary success, including winning a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for 2017’s ‘Sleep Well Beast’, headlining festivals around the world, offered up classic songs including ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’, ‘Mr November’ , ‘ Fake Empire’ and ‘I Need My Girl’, and working with countless culture-defining artists including collaborations with Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, and Sufjan Stevens.

Joining The National for the tour will be one of Indie Folk’s most acclaimed acts, Fleet Foxes. Led by lead singer-songwriter Robin Pecknold, Fleet Foxes have won a legion of fans and garnered critical acclaim for making music full of wonderful orchestrations, and gorgeous melodies that fuse earthy, harmony-rich folk-rock with a sense of lush pop sophistication.

Also last here in 2018, Fleet Foxes will tour Australia for the first time since the release of their 2020 fourth studio album ‘Shore’, which earned the band their second Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, and sweeping praise from MOJO (five stars), Rolling Stone (four stars), and Pitchfork (the fifth consecutive Best New Music), with Rolling Stone calling the album ‘...the most immediately rewarding Fleet Foxes record since their brilliant 2008 debut.’

Opening for all shows will be Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Annie Hamilton.

The National have announced their return to Australia.

Last here in 2018, the US indie rock band will perform shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth through February and March of next year (see full dates below).

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, September 22nd at 12pm local time. The Live Nation pre-sale begins on Thursday, September 21st at 1pm local time.

The National will be joined by two very special guests at all shows – Fleet Foxes and Annie Hamilton.

Also last here in 2018, Fleet Foxes, one of the most acclaimed folk bands of the 21st century, will present their 2020 album, Shore , to Australian audiences. The album was widely praised by critics, with Rolling Stone hailing it as “the most immediately rewarding Fleet Foxes record since their brilliant 2008 debut.”

Rising Sydney singer-songwriter Annie Hamilton has previously supported Jack River and will open all of The National’s Australian shows.

The National are touring in support of their 2023 albums, First Two Pages of Frankenstein and Laugh Track . The former was released to positive reviews in April, becoming a top ten hit in the US, Australia, and several other countries. Laugh Track , meanwhile, was surprise released this month.

“Nine albums deep, The National find new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out,” wrote Rolling Stone in a strong appraisal of First Two Pages of Frankenstein .

More The National

The National have announced their hotly awaited return to Australia, slating four massive shows – in some of the country’s most prestigious venues, no less – for early next year.

The run will begin at Meanjin/Brisbane’s Riverstage venue on Wednesday February 28, followed that Friday (March 1) by a show at the Aware Super Theatre in Eora/Sydney. From there, the modern-day indie icons will head to Naarm/Melbourne – playing the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Tuesday March 5 – before wrapping up in Boorloo/Perth on Saturday March 9, when they’ll play Kings Park And Botanic Gardens.

All four gigs will see The National joined by their world-renowned indie-rock contemporaries in Fleet Foxes , who much like the headliners, haven’t performed on Australian shores since the start of 2018. Annie Hamilton will also deliver her one-of-a-kind stage show, opening for all shows across the run.

Tickets go on sale at 12pm local time this Friday (September 22), with a Live Nation pre-sale running from 1pm a day earlier (September 21) – see here for more info on both sales.

The tour comes in support of The National’s surprise tenth album, Laugh Track , which arrived without prior announcement today (September 18) via 4AD. The tour will also celebrate its predecessor, First Two Pages Of Frankenstein , which only hit shelves back in April of this year.

By Music Feeds

The National have added a couple of extra dates to their 2024 Australian tour with guests Fleet Foxes and Annie Hamilton . The trio of acts will play a second show at Sydney’s Aware Super Theatre on Saturday, 2nd March and a second show at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Wednesday, 6th March. Tickets for both shows go on sale at 12pm on Thursday, 12th October.

The National – ‘Deep End (Paul’s In Pieces)’

The forthcoming tour is The National’s first trip to Australia since 2018. They’ve released three albums in that time: 2019’s I Am Easy To Find , 2023’s First Two Pages of Frankenstein and last month’s surprise release, Laugh Track . The former album was accompanied by a 27-minute film directed by Mike Mills and starring Swedish actor Alicia Vikander.

Fleet Foxes have also been absent from Australia since pre-Covid. The Seattle folkies, led by singer and songwriter Robin Pecknold, released their fourth album, Shore , in September 2020. Sydney-based Annie Hamilton released her debut album, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past , in 2022 via [PIAS] Australia.

The National announce Australian tour with Fleet Foxes, release surprise album

N either of them has been here since 2018, but next year The National and Fleet Foxes will be returning to tour Australia. Together!

This perfect double bill will travel the nation between February and March next year, taking in a performance in Sydney and outdoor venues in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Update: Additional shows have been added in Sydney and Melbourne with tickets on sale Thursday 12 October. Check out the full run of tour dates at bottom.

The tour news follows the surprise release today of Laugh Track , The National's second album of the year following First Two Pages of Frankenstein , released in April and their third consecutive Double J Feature Album.

Laugh Track 's 12 new songs were honed in live performances before recorded in the studio. Closing track 'Smoke Detector' was even captured during a soundcheck. So, you can bet these new songs will sound even better on Australian stages.

Emerging out of Brooklyn at the turn of the century, The National have gone on to become one of indie rock's prestige acts, scooping Grammys and collaborating with fellow scene titans like Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Sufjan Stevens, and even Taylor Swift.

, they've specialised in a specific strain of mature, artfully maudlin introspection, capturing complex emotions with music that's at turns tragic, beautiful, and cathartic.

Or "sad-sack-mope-dad-rock-brunch-core-Americana", as frontman Matt Berninger once eloquently put it.

They're also a formidable live band, and if you've ever witnessed highlights like 'Bloodbuzz Ohio', 'Fake Empire', 'Mr November' or 'Don't Swallow The Cap' in the flesh, you already know these upcoming shows are going to make for treasured memories.

As if The National wasn't enough of a drawcard, we'll also get to spend an evening with indie folk marvels Fleet Foxes.

Fronted by singer-songwriter Robin Pecknold , the band's four-album catalogue is very much a case of quality over quantity.

Fleet Foxes (2008) is considered as an instant classic in many circles, while Helplessness Blues (2011) expanded their stunning harmonies and melodies with lush orchestrations and inventive song structures. Then, Crack-Up (2017) was a more adventurous, impressionistic affair.

This 2024 tour will also be the first chance for Australians to experience live material from 2020's Shore , Fleet Foxes' latest album and one of that year's best . We're getting chills just thinking about it.

The chance to see two revered bands of this calibre on the one bill, let alone Down Under, is rare. So you can bet it's going to be a special night to remember.

Opening all shows will be Sydney singer-songwriter Annie Hamilton . She's got a knack for stitching more atmosphere, drama, depth and humour into her music than most guitar-toting songsmiths.

(Also, fun fact: Hamilton was a member of Little May , whose 2015 debut album For The Company was produced by The National's Aaron Dessner. )

Tickets are on sale now. For more info visit the Live Nation AU website .

The National are probably the biggest band to come out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The indie-rock group is made up of 5 band members, including two sets of brothers, who play alongside lead singer Matt Beringer.

The band were formed in 1999, and they’ve been touring pretty much ever since. Most of their time as a group has been spent in Brooklyn, New York, where they’ve had a slow burning career that’s seen them grow from being a hardworking but relatively unknown band, to a group who headline festivals around the world and sell out 20,000 capacity arenas.

The full line up consists of lead vocalist Matt Beringer, twin brothers Aaron (guitar, bass, keys) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and another set of brothers Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

Matt Beringer’s distinctive baritone voice, alongside his self-penned discerning lyrics gives the band a unique sound, often described as erring on the sombre-side. They are said to have taken influence from the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, but believe strongly in being innovative and continuing to grow independently as an act.

Interesting fact: one of their biggest breakthrough moments came from their track "Fake Empire" featuring on the 2008 Obama campaign. This, alongside successful support tours with artists like R.E.M., set them on the path to their current popularity. The release of "High Violet" in 2010 saw them reach the biggest achievements of their career - hitting the top 5 across the UK, US and Canada.

Their most recent album "Trouble Will Find Me", was the record that really cemented them into the mainstream. Just before the release of this sixth EP, they premiered a documentary called "Mistaken For Strangers" which followed the band on their "High Violet" tour, focusing mainly on the relationship between singer Matt Beringer and his brother, who took on the role of assistant tour manager.

The National are true strivers, they’ve gradually warmed their way into many a record collection, and with each release prove themselves to be more accomplished than before. Despite their more recent successes, they are not to be considered as having reached a peak: it’s in their nature to continue to improve on themselves.

Live reviews

I suppose any music lover feels a personal connection with what they are listening too, no matter how trite. For fans of The National, the deeply personal, cathartic nature of their songs always seem to express a deep sense of longing. It’s become emblematic of their songs: that somewhat mournful tone in the Dessner production, the halted and deep baritone of Berninger voice, the stark delivery of the rhythm by the Devendorfs.

Few bands know how to manage the mediums which they use as effectively as The National. Their studio sound is immaculate but their live shows are just as perfectly constructed to give the sense of a magical connection between band and crowd night after night. To these talents we can now add short film with Mike Mills’ oeuvre.

Although I personally felt that they had relied too much on their emblematic character over content on their previous album: Sleep Well Beast and I was relieved and delighted by the novelty of an overtly feminin nature on I am Easy to Find. It is a truly excellent LP to add to their already impressive catalogue of outstanding albums but it is easier to achieve intimacy in a studio. The Dessners are expert producers, lending their latents to many other musicians in the Indie world. Harnessing The National’s inimitable vibe in the controlled environment of a studio is easier than expressing deep and personal feeling during a rock concert.

This is where Matt Berninger shines. While the other members of the band play fantastically and even with some theatricality; occasionally trading places and instruments throughout. Berninger’s stage presence is what truly makes a The National concert an experience.

He doesn’t have a good singing voice and he doesn’t have expressive of diverting stage banter (On this occasion he shared the fact that their tour bus has truck a moose on route to Montreal) but what he does have is the ability to give the impression he is reaching out to us, the audience members.

Unlike most musicians who regularly appear in the news for kicking cameras or knocking peoples’ phones out of their hands, Berninger encourages cell phone filming in his shows through his antics. Granted, there is pro forma pre-recorded warning prior to the show that all venues play which warns that filming the show is forbidden, but when the modern audience inevitably pull out their devices to “capture the moment”, the National frontman gives them something to remember. During one song he took a phone out of a front row audience member’s hand and carried it on-stage alternating between filming himself in extreme confessional close-up or capturing guitar work by one Dessner or another.

In another case, he took the phone on a wild ride during one of his legendary walkabouts through the audience. If you’ve been to a The National show, you will recognize this characteristic move by Berninger. He will suddenly become compelled to leave the stage and plow into the crowd. He enters into what appears to be some kind of fugue state, moving back and forth, carving a path through the throngs of the audience members who reach out to touch him, hug him or, more often than not, film him. His interactions are impetuous, short and frenetic, almost brusque as though he is desperate to find what he is looking for and that search is always a physical manifestation of intimacy.

Even when he is on stage, this personae of the desperation and frustration as he strives to connect with us on a personal level is made manifest by the way he wrestled his mike from its stand, flinging the inanimate object violently when it refuses to cooperate. He climbs onto lights and monitors or paces back and forth with nervous hands as though he is trapped and desperate to get out, to connect, with us. Sometimes he seems to almost manage a personal moment, a passing high five or sharing the rest of his bottle of cold red wine with the front row.

It’s an act. The moves are just as rehearsed as a pop diva’s choreographed dance sequence, if less overt. The roadies are always at hand to pick up that recalcitrant mic stand and somehow, empathically, know when Berninger will suddenly be compelled to plunge into the crowd and have an improbable 200 feet of mic cord at the ready. We know the moves, we wait for the sudden yet inevitable breakdown of Mr. November, we sing along with Vanderlyle, yet they still affect us.

I know it’s a conceit, but it’s great showmanship which make us believe we have shared something special and it’s what keeps me coming back show after show.

I have been introduced to The National by my husband in 2002 when we moved to Vancouver. I was automatically drawn to their music. Being in a new city, and without knowing anyone, I often spend my free time going for long walks and exploring. Their music provided me with a lot of comfort as I strolled through streets full of people, yet feeling alone. Their dark, full of melancholy music fills me up with longing for more. In times where I need a good cry, when I do chores around the house, when I sit down with a glass of wine, it is my go to music. I love all their albums, but High Violet, Trouble will find me, and Boxer are definitely albums that are on the constant repeat. My husband, a music fanatic, is always on the lookout for the new and greatest bands. He keeps introducing me to new artists, yet after listening to one or two songs from their album, I switch the ITunes to play The National. If someone asked me what my favourite song is it would go like this: "I should live in salt" , "Fireproof", "Graceless", "I need my girl", "This is the last time", "Terrible love", "Sorrow", "Lemonworld" "Mistaken for Strangers", "Fake Empire" "Abel" "Trouble will find me"... the list can go on and on.. I don't think they have ever written a bad song. What I love about their songs is not only the melodies are superbly written but the lyrics are full of meaning (and that is hard to find in music today). The National are bringing back music that matters, music that fills your heart and soul. I had a pleasure of attending one of their concerts here in Vancouver in 2013 at the PNE. It was the most amazing show ever. I am about to turn 40, yet I was screaming like a teenager! Did I mention, I love Matt! I recently watched the documentary "Mistaken for Strangers" and loved this new expose of the band... The National, unique sound, amazing vocals, beautiful melodies, dark lyrics, talented musicians and song writers... I would do anything to see them in concert again!

I had such a great evening seeing The National! Matt's interaction with the crowd was second to none. On multiple occasions throughout the evening he descended into the standing area, and sometimes the audience lost sight of him for what felt like minutes (but probably was seconds, thanks to security).

Irish singer Lisa Hannigan, who provided backing vocals on Sleep Well Beast, joined the National at multiple points during the night. Her enchanting vocals were sadly lost at first, but after a few adjustments she provided a haunting accompaniment to Matt's iconic baritone voice.

Matt's voice often reached new levels of emotion when it transcended into a guttural scream on certain songs.

As the night drew to a close, Matt announced that they were to sing 'the most depressing song we've ever written' - About Today. Hailing from their 2004 EP Cherry Tree, this was a particularly special moment. The crowd fell silent and eyes were drawn once again to the incredible light show behind the musicians.

Having performed a cover of Talking Heads' Heaven, support act This Is the Kit and Lisa Hannigan joined the stage for a beautiful, bittersweet rendition of Born to Beg.

The icing on the cake of a beautiful two hour concert was the final song - Terrible Love. Matt walked through the crowd as we all sang in unison 'it takes an ocean not to break'.

My only regret is that we didn't get to hear Mr November, my favourite song.

The National can be depressing, and there's no denying I felt slightly melancholy this morning, but in today's world it's impossible - at least for me at least - to pretend that everything is going swimmingly.

We need music that examines our deepest emotions to prevent us burying our heads in the sand. And with that, we need the National.

Morrissey’s voice made introductions by way of lyric as The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I What” was piped over the PA while the band took their position on stage. Berninger and the brothers were joined by a pair of multi-instrumentalists who dabbled in various sounds throughout the night, but whose main contribution came in the form of horns. As Morrissey’s pleas faded behind the three split-screens that acted as backdrops, Berninger was pacing like a caged beast; his neck bent, his head facing the ground, and his long blonde hair obscuring not only his glasses, but most of his facial features as well. “Thank you,” he said curtly, before following the brothers into “Don’t Swallow the Cap”. Everyone was on their feet, with their arms overhead, when the LSD-inspired rainbow light-show was washed out in bubbling crimson waves as the night transitioned into “Bloodbuzz Ohio”. Then we were treated to the first preview of the evening…

“Checking Out” started out with simple synth, then Berninger came in with his deep, introspective, stream-of-consciousness vocals about fucking things up, before a light backbeat and simple chord progression met him somewhere in the middle. The song continued to be very synth and vocal driven from beginning to end. Multiple members of the band have spoken about a new direction forward, and if “Checking Out” is any indication of where the new road leads, I’m certainly along for the ride.

This show was labeled "A Special Night with The National" and was a limited 6 city engagement that included a viewing of a short film directed by Mike Mills (not THAT one) and scored by special arrangements of tracks from IAETF and Q&A with Mike and one of the Dessner's and Matt.

The short film was good, very moving about a woman's (Alicia Vikander) journey from childhood through life and including all the experiences one would imagine a woman has/goes through. To this end the female collaboration on the new album lends itself very well.

The main set was comprised of the new tracks from IAETF and featured appearances by Julien Baker for a couple of songs, as well as the Brooklyn something Chorus/Choir. The live arrangements were complete with string trio and brass duo. The songs were good but most (all but 2 or 3) lacked the energy that one is accustomed to seeing from The National (this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing, I get it, this was a toned down show, to be seen more like an art show). The encore consisted of 3 or 4 songs from the back catalog and Not in Kansas, which packed so many political and societal issues into one song it will make your head spin. They played Fake Empire, Bloodbuzz and The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness which demonstrated the regular energy of a 'The National' show.

Overall a good show, definitely different from the 8 or 9 times I've seen them previously.

I saw The National at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta this May. I have always liked their music but did not have a strong desire to see them live because their music is so mellow. However, they were awesome! I was pretty close to the stage in a general admission area. The sound was great and their energy was great too. I was shocked at how bad ass the lead singer is. He was smashing things on stage and even came out into the audience and crowd "walked" around. I was so close I could almost touch his hand. At the end of the show, they were so thankful of the audience, and it seems like they genuinely care about their fans and want to make sure that they give the best performance possible. I really enjoy their current album, Trouble Will Find Me. "Graceless" and "I Need my Girl" are my favorite songs. They have been around for awhile (I think about 10 years), and their music just keeps getting better, and they stay current. Seeing them live made me more interested in them as a band. I would definitely see them again if they came back into town.

Some people of my age (82) want to try Parachuting, Bungee Jumping or some other daring pursuit while still on this planet but my greatest wish was to go to a live concert of that amazing band, The National!

I was so lucky to be in Brighton last Saturday (7th Dec) to have my wish granted and the whole experience was fantastic - they even played my very favourite song, ‘Light Years’. The song list was well chosen, full of contrast in mood and tempo and the audience responded happily to singing Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks!

Our group included three generations, myself, two daughters and a granddaughter, all National fans.

The Brighton Centre is an excellent venue and the audience was so receptive and enthusiastic. I think Matt himself must have realised that, considering his many ventures down to the front row. At one point, he stumbled and my younger daughter held out her hands to steady him - unfortunately he stood on her toes but all is forgiven, Matt!

I had heard they were a life changing show prior to going, but I was skeptical due to how hyperbolic people tend to be about that kind of thing, but HOLY SHIT.

They had a bit of a rocky start, but once they got their groove on (and Beringer got sufficiently drunk) 2-3 songs in, it was one of the most surreal shows I've ever had the pleasure of attending.

their music is often noted for being a bit mellow, but this show couldn't be less so. when it they weren't reaching swans-level volumes with songs like Mr November, they were delivering some satisfyingly visceral takes on classics like "Don't Swallow the Cap" or "Fake Empire"

seriously, though, this show was insane & I highly recommend seeing them to anyone if they're in your area.

An incredible live performance. Matt and the band bring to life songs from the album with such passion and grit in ways that can't fully be explained. They make you fall in love again with music and songs that you may have listened to hundreds of times and thought you understood. They emotionally charge into anthems and b sides alike and have a great time interacting with the crowd, with Matt often stepping off stage or singing with the crowd around him. The stage presence, comments between songs, goofy dancing by Matt, band mate banter and red solo cups handed out or flung into the crowd all add to the incredible musical performance. I can't recommend seeing them enough. If you're a fan this is a must see show.

They are absolutely incredible live. Between Matt's shrieking during The Pull of You and the intensity of Bryce and Aaron during rockers like Day I Die (during which Matt waded deep into the crowd) and System, this was certainly not a boring affair! Even the quieter numbers (Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks, Light Years, etc) had a coiled intensity. Matt is super funny on stage, telling clever anecdotes and giving away the mic stand at the end of the concert. The only caveat to the performance was that the whole field reeked of weed, so strong it was making me and my SO sick. Most of the fans just stood there smoking instead of actually having fun and dancing. The band itself was awesome though!

The National & Fleet Foxes' Australian tour: a complementary pair of prestige indie rock

The National's Matt Berninger performing live at Brisbane Riverstage, 28 Februrary 2024

 • X (formerly Twitter)

There's a firmly held belief among musicians that writing a sad song is easier than a happy one.

Case in point: The National . They've been making artfully moody, melancholy music for over 20 years and risen from Brooklyn-via-Ohio underdogs to a hugely successful, festival-headlining force in that time.

Few have nailed what they do better than their own frontman, Matt Berninger , who once described them as "sad-sack-mope-dad-rock-brunch-core-Americana".

As much as they appeal to the midlife crisis set (their crew proudly sport matching 'Sad Dads' merch), The National have also become hugely popular with a younger generation of fans.

They are big on streaming, partly because of their connections to other marquee indie names – Bon Iver , Phoebe Bridgers , Sufjan Stevens . But also, because their dependable 'Nick Cave fronting The Smiths' vibe is a snug fit for moody playlists – streaming catnip for bookish Uni students and depressed grown-ups alike.

There's definitely more of the latter in attendance at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Wednesday night (6 March) in Melbourne, however they display the fervour of a Gen Z crowd.

The National aren't as big as recent visitor Taylor Swift (who is connected via the band's guitarist-producer Aaron Dessner ) or packing out multiple arena nights like UK producer Fred Again.. down the road, but they sure stoke the same level of hype from the audience.

It's their second night in town on tour with Fleet Foxes — a perfect billing. Not just because of the bang for buck of seeing two esteemed American acts in one night but because of their complementary musical shades.

Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold performing live at Brisbane Riverstage

If writing sad songs really is easier, nobody told Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold .

His pure, cloud-bursting voice regularly soars to glorious altitudes and fronts a lush mix of rustic folk and chamber pop with a healthy dash of '70s prog rock grandeur.

Performing to a criminally under-populated amphitheatre, the seven-piece nevertheless deliver a bright, beautifully polished set.

Cuts from their breakout 2008 self-titled debut sound like The Beach Boys in a log cabin, while fan faves 'White Winter Hymnal' and 'Mykonos' offer up golden vocal harmonies worthy of a cathedral.

Pecknold's singer-songwriter strumming is augmented by baroque arrangements as his band mates masterfully rotate through brass, stand-up bass, keys, flutes and guitars.

There's moments where they blot their revelry with darkness, notably on the muti-part 'Third of May/Ōdaigahara' and knotty twists of the haunting 'The Shrine/An Argument'. Largely though, their music injects a joyous dose of serotonin.

It's the aural equivalent of wiping down a dusty stain glass window to let light shine through and illuminate the colours and craft beneath.

It's the first time Australians are getting to hear material from 2020 album Shore , including the suitably titled 'Featherweight' and opener 'Sunblind'.

The latter is a euphoric ode to the majesty of songwriting itself, with lines nodding to Elliott Smith, Judee Sill, Otis Redding and a half-dozen more American greats.

Fleet Foxes performing live at Brisbane Riverstage

It's a microcosm for how Fleet Foxes excel at music that marvels at the majesty and magic secreted away in seemingly everyday minutiae, and it's easy to be swept up in their lush ruminations on life, legacy, family and the spirit often required to make it through tough times.

There's probably none better than their triumphant closer, 'Helplessness Blues'. The title track to their 2011 album finds Pecknold pondering his precarious place in the world but also the thrill of possibility, culminating in an idyllic fantasy of living off an apple orchard with a golden-haired partner.

If Fleet Foxes optimistically seek silver linings, by contrast, The National are content to wade in the stormy greys. And as night falls proper on a deeply satisfactory performance, the former makes way for the main event.

The National performing live at Brisbane Riverstage, 28 Februrary 2024

Having rolled out more familiar hits the night before, The National explain they're opting for a different set-list to whoops of approval.

They showcase deeper cuts, spanning from 2003's Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers through to last year's back-to-back ninth and tenth studio albums.

Where some of their newer recordings have become a little bloodless (incorporating cleaner production and synthetic sounds), The National have always been a great live band.

They sound more vital on stage, thanks to the rhythms of the Devendorf brothers (Scott on drums and Bryan on bass) lending some muscle to the Dessner twins' complement of textured guitars and bittersweet piano.

The National's Bryce Dessner shredding live at Brisbane Riverstage

The focus is very much on Matt Berninger and his brooding baritone. The lean 53-year-old has always cut an unconventional figure on stage, a strangely magnetic presence that croons and mumbles across the stage and getting up close with the audience as a hapless stage tech chases after him, untangling his mic cable.

With his buttoned-up blazer and hip glasses, the vocalist resembles an exhausted CEO of a start-up sauntering around the boardroom to greet his adoring employees.

It also fits the everyman tone of narratives sung from the perspective of dysfunctional blue collar workers and depressed old dudes smiling through the torment, a few twists of the dial from a breakdown.

There's a strong literary bent to Berninger's lyrics (often written with his wife, Carin Besser), leading to a perfect poetic couplet like: ' Sorrow found me when I was young/Sorrow waited, sorrow won.'

That latter Hight Violet stand-out is performed tonight with excellent opening act Annie Hamilton (who was also produced by Aaron Dessner as part of her old band, Little May ). She grins her way through the duet, at odds with the bleak lyrics but speaking exactly to how strangely comforting The National can be.

At their best, they put words to complex feelings – desperation, alienation, and other fun crises – and wrap them up in music that's the right mix of tragically sad and beautiful.

It's why the faithful belt dour choruses like 'I stay down with my demons ' and 'I don't have the drugs to sort it out' as if they were chart-topping pop hits.

Even at their most maudlin, there's an element of gallows humour that can make you laugh or cry, depending on your mood. Whether it's a line like ' When I walk into the room, I do not light it up ' or fretting about who gets the best records in the wake of a divorce on 'Eucalyptus'. ( 'What about the Cowboy Junkies? What about The Afghan Whigs?' ).

These days, The National have adopted some stadium rock habits, too, most notably in the production: a spectacle of strobing lights and colourful video screens that augment their rowdiest moments.

The twin bass guitars and noisy catharsis of 'I'm Afraid of Everyone' gets a huge response, so too 'The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness' as both Berninger and the audience spill pent-up emotions as they bark ' I can't explain it any other way '.

But it's all perhaps too much of a good thing.

Playing for nearly two hours is a fan's dream on paper – it means you're likely to hear your favourite era or rarely heard cut.

For the less hardcore, it's a double-edged sword. At epic length and placed side-by-side, it underscores how The National hasn't wildly evolved over the years and a samey-ness starts to creep in.

When Matt Berninger first wades headlong into the crowd during 'Graceless' – up through the pit and stalls to the nosebleeds – it's thrilling. Beaming fans capturing the close encounter on their smartphones before he's off again, mic cable whipping a trail overhead.

The second and third time? Less exciting.

There's also an odd sense of pacing – several late numbers are built up to a fever pitch and what seems like a natural finisher, only to dive into another.

It doesn't dampen what is an otherwise splendid night of back-to-back prestige indie rock, but nobody would've left the venue wanting for more.

After six years ( and a cancelled tour ) between visits to our shores, you can't blame them for going full fan service, including finishing with 'About Today', a dynamic, beloved cut (from 2004's Cherry Tree ).

It's the conclusion to an encore that offers a neat mini-set, moving from a gorgeously restrained 'Runaway' to airing a new song, 'Bat Child' to the rollicking 'Mr November' and the anthemic 'Terrible Love'.

By the time The National finish battering their instruments, departing in a noisy wash, Berninger – tired but content – gratefully thanks the adoring crowd.

The CEO puts his jacket back on and departs. Business, it seems, is good.

The National reschedule 2020 Australian tour

They're supporting their eighth album 'I Am Easy To Find' and they're bringing Phoebe Bridgers along for the ride.

After releasing their eighth studio album I Am Easy To Find back in May, rockers The National are now ready to share it on the live stage with Australian fans – and they’ve chosen some perfectly lush venues to host the nights. Put March and April December 2020 in your diaries, pronto.

*Update: The National have rescheduled their 2020 Australian tour dates, moving the March and April tour to December. Current tickets are valid for the new dates.

The album has been described as many things – and all of them are as evocative, magical, and big as the last. By now, nearly two decades since their self-titled debut album, we know exactly what to expect from a The National album. Not in a bored or a predictable way, but there is a sense of expectation that comes with a band so far into their career. In many ways, I Am Easy To Find is exactly that – but its true beauty can be found in the fact that it can, at once, feel deeply familiar and extremely foreign.

Across its sprawling hour-plus run time The National invite you inside the world of I Am Easy To Find. As always they harness their ability to be both restrained and anthemic in the same breath, but with every striking minute that ticks by The National reveal new, tiny surprises.

You’re probably well accustomed to everything I Am Easy To Find has to offer, which means you’re just as excited as we are that The National are bringing the record – along with the rest of their glorious 20-year back catalogue – to Australian stages in March and April 2020.

"I Am Easy To Find" - A Film by Mike Mills / An Album by The National

Last time The National were on our shows they were filling venues like the Sydney Opera House Forecourt, Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Brisbane’s Riverstage. This time the venue’s are dialled down in size, The National playing their most intimate Australian venues in a decade and presenting the raw intensity of their music in the most up-close-and-personal setting most Australian fans have ever experienced.

To make these shows that much more incredible, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers will be along for the ride. Following the release of her gorgeous debut album Stranger in the Alps, Bridgers was shot to international acclaim. In the last 12 months, she’s taken her repertoire even further teaming up with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to release an EP as boygenius and joining forces with Conor Oberst for a full-length album under the guise Better Oblivion Community Centre. She returns to Australia following sell-out headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane earlier this year.

The National and Fleet Foxes Announce 2024 Australian Tour

The National have announced they’ll be joining forces with Fleet Foxes on an upcoming tour of Australia. The tour will see the bands play four dates around the country in February and March, starting at Brisbane’s Riverstage on Wednesday, 28th February and finishing in Perth on Saturday, 9th March. Sydney’s Annie Hamilton will support the bands at all dates.

Both bands were last here in 2018. This will be Fleet Foxes first tour since the release of acclaimed 2020 album The Shore, while The National have released three albums since that time, 2019’s I Am Easy To Find , 2023’s First Two Pages of Frankenstein and this week’s surprise release Laugh Track.

The National: ‘Space Invader’

The band revealed the news of the new album while on stage in Ohio at the weekend . It’s billed as the surprise second half to … Frankenstein . It marks the band’s 10th studio record.

“I think our relationships had become largely focused on the work on the music, but we’d lost track of each other,” guitarist Bryce Dessner told NME earlier in 2023 about First Two Pages of Frankenstein . “We’ve said that things felt fragile before, but I think this time was different. I think it was quite real and I think that it was actually necessary. We needed to let it go and accept the possibility that it would end.

“This record to me – and to all of us – feels like the culmination of everything we’ve learned. Aesthetically, we are really proud of where it sits. We sound more like ourselves maybe than we did in recent times.”

The National & Fleet Foxes 2024 Australian Tour Dates

Wednesday 28th February – Riverstage, Brisbane QLD

Friday, 1st March – Aware Super Theatre, Sydney NSW

Tuesday, 5th March – Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne VIC

The National Announce New Album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, 2023 Tour Dates

They've also shared first single "Tropic Morning News"

The National Announce New Album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, 2023 Tour Dates

The National have readied their next album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein . The follow-up to 2019’s I Am Easy to Find is out April 28th via 4AD, and it comes with a lengthy run of 2023 tour dates. What’s more, first single “Tropic Morning News” is available to stream now.

For a while, it seemed like First Two Pages of Frankenstein — or any new National album — was an impossibility. As the band explains in a press release, lead singer Matt Berninger experienced “a very dark spot where I couldn’t come up with lyrics or melodies at all. Even though we’d always been anxious whenever we were working on a record, this was the first time it ever felt like maybe things really had come to an end.” Fortunately, however, he made it through, and the resulting album — featuring huge names like Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift — marks what The National is calling “a new era for the band.”

The National will support First Two Pages of Frankenstein with a summer tour that includes stops in the US, UK, and Europe. Written by Berninger and his wife Carin, “Tropic Morning News” tackles morning doomscrolling with a deceptively light instrumental. “When Matt came in with that song in the depths of his depression, it felt like a turning point for us,” Aaron Dessner said of the track. “It’s almost Dylan-esque in its lyrics and it’s so much fun to play; everything suddenly felt like it was coming alive again.” Listen to “Tropic Morning News” and check out the artwork and tracklist for First Two Pages of Frankenstein below.

Last year, The National teamed up with Bon Iver for the track “Weird Goodbyes,” and remixed NEU!’s song “Im Glück” for the Krautrock band’s 50th anniversary box set.

How to Follow The National Tournament presented by BMW

the national australian tour

The domestic golf season reaches its climax this week on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula with The National Tournament presented by BMW.

Months of toil and travel for the players will come to fruition when the Moonah course at The National at Cape Schanck hosts the season-ending tournament on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

A season spanning 16 tournaments that began in mid-October, 2022, will close at The National from Thursday where the Order of Merit will be decided.

It is a pivotal point for many of the 110 players in the field for the $200,000 tournament, because at stake are some big opportunities.

The winner of the Order Of Merit has been decided with Victorian star David Micheluzzi producing a season for the ages with three wins, and earning himself the place in the field at Royal Liverpool for the fabled Open Championship in July that the OOM champion receives.

The top three finishers in the Order of Merit will receive playing rights for the DP World Tour in the 2023-24 season, giving them starts on what used to be known as the European Tour. These are the main carrots with many other opportunities that basically see any player in the top 20 or so gain some type of benefit, such as a spot at final stage of the Korn Ferry or DPWT qualifying schools.

Currently Micheluzzi, who has won two tournaments in a breakout summer, leads from Canberra’s Brendan Jones and Victorian Andrew Martin.

The Australasian Tour Order of Merit is being calculated this season for the first time on a points system rather than dollars. There are 190 points for the winner at The National.

“In many ways the Order of Merit and the exemptions that it provides for players are what we’re about with the tour,” said Dastey.

“We’re trying to operate a tour that is competitive for participants and attractive to fans, but also a tour that provides great opportunities for the players that perform well across the season.

“The tournament at The National is the culmination of that for this season and I’ve got absolutely no doubt there will be a bunch of players going to The National thinking that it’s a very big few days for them and their future career opportunities.”

Dastey said the Tour was excited to be working with The National to create this unique tournament on one of the world’s most stunning pieces of golfing land.

“The National and the Moonah course is a brilliant championship venue, we are very optimistic for the vision of this event and it’s capabilities to grow into the future as one of our major events” said Dastey.

Players to watch in the season-ender include Micheluzzi, who has won the WA PGA Championship, the NSW Open and the TPS Sydney events on the Tour this season, Tom Power Horan, winner of the Gippsland Super 6 and ranked inside the top-three on the OOM and Martin, whose remarkable feats of putting under pressure gave him victory in the Victorian PGA championship at Moonah Links late last year.

Aside from the top three in the Order of Merit getting DP World Tour cards, the next three in order receive an exemption into the final stage of DP World Tour qualifying school, and the next seven players get into the second stage of Q-school. The top five overall receive an entry to the final stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-school in the United States, and the players ranked 6th to 15th are into the second stage of Q-school for that tour, which serves as the gateway to the lucrative PGA Tour in America.

“This might be the end of a long season for the players,” said Dastey. “But it’s absolutely huge for many of them and we have no doubt that it’s going to bring the best out of them. To put that kind of contest on to a world class golf course like the Moonah at The National, it showcases our sport at a very high level.”

The final two rounds will be broadcast on Fox Sports, Kayo Sports and Sky Sport NZ starting from 12pm on Saturday and 12.30pm Sunday AEDT.

Event overview

The National Tournament presented by BMW is the season-ending event on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, with the Order of Merit to be decided on Sunday. This is the second year of the event, which was played on The National’s Gunnamatta course in 2022. The Order of Merit is a points-based, season-long ranking which carries numerous exemptions into big tournaments in 2023-24 for the top players. The National is world-renowned as a golf facility, and the Moonah course, designed by Greg Norman, is ranked among the top courses in Australia.

Players to watch

HOODOO GURUS ANNOUNCE BACK TO THE STONEAGE 2024 TOUR

 • Greg Phillips
 • May 9, 2024

the national australian tour

Hot off the announcement of their extremely limited, vinyl collector’s set, Hoodoo Gurus have today announced a national tour celebrating 40 years since they released Stoneage Romeos.

Originally released in March 1984, Stoneage Romeos, was the Gurus’ debut album and featured the hits Leilani, Tojo, My Girl and I Want You Back. It reached #29 on the Australian Album Chart and the album went on to win Best Debut Album at the 1984 Countdown Awards. Stoneage Romeos has consistently appeared in the Top 10 on almost every Top 50 and Top 100 Australian album lists.

The Back to the Stoneage 2024 national tour will see the band play the Stoneage Romeos album in full followed by a selection of hit songs and album tracks. The tour will kick off in Thirroul/Wollongong (Anita’s Theatre) on 14 November, before heading to Newcastle (Civic Theatre – 15 November), Gosford (The Entertainment Grounds – 16 November), Melbourne (Palais Theatre – 22 November), Adelaide (Hindley St Music Hall – 23 November), Canberra (Llewellyn Hall – 28 November), two shows in Sydney (The Coliseum – 29 November and the Enmore Theatre – 30 November), Sunshine Coast (The Station – 6 December), Brisbane (The Fortitude Music Hall – 7 December), Gold Coast (Miami Marketta – 8 December) finishing up at Perth’s Astor Theatre on Friday, 13 December 2024.

Dave Faulkner said, “‘Stoneage Romeos’ was a pivotal album for us and many of its songs have remained live favourites ever since. It’ll be great to play some of those “less-travelled” songs from it on this tour – even though that means we’ll be playing longer sets to fit everything else in as well. Hah! To my mind that’s a win-win situation.”

Since forming in 1981, Hoodoo Gurus boast 10 x ARIA Top 20 albums, 9 x ARIA Top 40 singles and a host of multi-platinum albums – they’re mainstays on the live scene, and influential to a new generation of artists that have arrived after them.

Few other artists have toured as comprehensively, achieved such an enduring reputation over successive generations, enjoyed such loyalty from fans and maintained such high currency for their work – both within Australia and abroad.

Through to their chart-topping successes throughout the ’80s and ’90s, their international triumphs and countless sold-out local tours, from their 1998-2003 break-up through to their latest album, Chariot of the Gods, Hoodoo Gurus have been and remain one of the most popular and successful musical acts Australia has ever produced.

Special guests on the tour are truly special, with Wollongong’s own Tumbleweed joining the Gurus at Anita’s Theatre and the Enmore and Melbourne alt-rockers Dallas Crane in Newcastle, Melbourne and Adelaide.

GANGgajang, Spy v Spy and Allniters will share the stage with the Gurus in Gosford. Spy v Spy will also appear in Canberra and at the Coliseum in Sydney. Rounding out the special guests are Brisbane’s Screamfeeder on all three Queensland shows and Perth’s power-pop trio, Rinehearts, playing for a home crowd in Perth.

Event description.

Free walking tour of Waverley Cemetery (Sydney, NSW)

The Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) is delighted to announce that we will be offering a free walking tour of Waverley Cemetery as part of National Archaeology Week (NAW) 2024. The tour will be led by Archaeologist and President of ASHA, Dr Siobhan Lavelle OAM, from 10:30am to 1pm on Sunday 26 May 2024 (AEST) About Waverley Cemetery: Waverley Cemetery is positioned on an elevated urban site overlooking the Tasman Sea (Pacific Ocean). With over 100,000 burials and inurnments, the cemetery fully occupies its 16 ha. With its spectacular coastal setting, its magnificent monuments, its wealth of genealogical, historical, architectural and artistic information, Waverley Cemetery ranks among the distinctive and picturesque cemeteries of the world.

Waverley Cemetery opened on 1 August 1877 with sections for Church of England 3 acres, Roman Catholic 2 acres and all other denominations (General) 5 acres. It reached its present size in 1895. The site retains much of its Victorian layout, the cemetery being divided into twenty numbered sections. Grave plots are laid out in a grid pattern with structures mainly of white marble with some granite and sandstone. Many tall monuments such as columns, broken columns, pedestals with urns and obelisks create a strong vertical emphasis.

Major monuments prominent in the landscape include the 1798 Irish Monument; the Governor Duff monument; the Henry Kendall monument; the Johnston family vault; the Greek Revival monument to Sir James Martin; and the Chowder Bay Monument. The Stuart family vault dating from 1914-1916, is a surviving work from the architectural partnership of Chicago-trained Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahony Griffin and J. Burcham Clamp, a Sydney architect. Several of these will be shown on the tour, which will also visit some unique individual headstones and monuments within the cemetery.

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele shot an 8-under 64 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the LIV Tour’s Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club.

The 41-year-old Steele’s last PGA Tour victory came in 2017 when he won his second Safeway Open. He lost in a playoff to Australian Cameron Smith at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Steele had a 36-hole total of 14-under 130. He had a streak of four birdies, a bogey and two birdies in the middle of his round.

Danny Lee was a stroke behind after a 67, followed by Carlos Ortiz (68) and Mito Pereira (67) in a tie for third.

First-round leader Jinichiro Kozuma shot 71 and was tied for ninth, four strokes behind Steele. The Japanese player had an eagle, three birdies and four bogeys.

Jon Rahm, who has yet to win since joining LIV in December, shot 69 and was tied for 15th, six strokes off the lead.

Steele predicted a 20-under total would be needed to win after Sunday’s final round.

“There’s good scores out there for sure,” he said. “If you’re in the fairway, then you can take on a lot of the pins.”

Smith shot 65 and was among those three behind in a four-way tie for fifth.

Enjoying the home crowd’s support, Smith said he was grateful for the lady his errant shot hit on the 17th hole. The shot rebounded kindly off the woman and Smith ended up with a birdie on the hole.

“I hit her in the back,” Smith said. “It probably wasn’t going to be in the trees, but it was going to be in the rough and a different lie, so it could have been a different outcome. But (I) made her proud and made a birdie there, and she helped me out — hopefully that eased the pain a little bit for her.”

A new friendship ensued.

“She was nice,” Smith said. “I went over there and I signed a ball, and she said ‘just give me a hug’, so I gave her a hug as well. She was sweet.”

There was also drama in another Australian’s round with Lucas Herbert’s caddie, Nick Pugh, hit in the head by a water bottle thrown from the crowd while replacing the flagstick at the 12th hole.

Herbert had just holed a birdie putt to finish his round in the shotgun format and was celebrating with fans at the par-3, known as the ‘watering hole’ with its loud music and boisterous fans, when Pugh was hit in the back of the head.

Pugh initially sunk to his knees but made his way back to the clubhouse and was reportedly uninjured and in good spirits.

The LIV tour remains in the Asia region next week for the May 3-5 Singapore event at the Sentosa Golf Club. Then there’s a month-long break before resuming in Houston from June 7-9.
