About Tirupati

Timurala Venkateswara Temple, or simply known as Tirupati, is the most famous pilgrimage destination of South India , and the most popular one. It is located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh , about 750KM southwest of Vishakhapatnam, and is also home to other historic and ancient temples. Hence, the town is also referred to as the Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The temple, the highlight of the Tirupati map, is perched on and is surrounded by the Tirumala Hills, which are a part of the Sheshachalam Hills Range. They are also called the Tirupati hills. The hills rise to about 2799ft. above sea level, offering great views of the surrounding landscape of forests and waterfalls.

The hills are distinguished by seven peaks, which are mythological representations of the seven heads of Adisesha . The Tirupati temple sits on the 7 th peak – Venkatadri , adjacent to the Swami Pushkarini Lake. Hence it is also called the Temple of the Seven Hills . The entire town, including the temple, covers an area of 26.75 km2 and has a population of 287,035.

The name Tirupati is derived from its Dravidian origin , which translates to “ sacred abode ”.

History of Tirupati Balaji Temple

It is believed that Venkateswara, an avatar of Vishn u appeared on what is presently the temple site, to save mankind from the sufferings of the Kali Yuga. Most ruling dynasties like the Pallavas, Cholas, and the Vijayanagar Kings were devotees of this temple. The first official administration of the temple was set up by Maratha general, Raghoji I Bhosle.

Then during the colonial rule, the British East India Company oversaw the management and handed it to the Mahants of Hathiramji Muth . It was only in 1933, under the TTD Act, the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams trust was formed to manage and conduct all activities in Tirupathi and other temples in Tirumala.

Interesting Facts

One of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, Tirupati Temple is frequented by nearly 100,000 people daily , who come here for the sole purpose of Tirupati darshan. On special occasions and festival, the number goes up to 500,00 0, making it the most-visited holy place in the world.

It is also considered to be the richest Hindu temple in the world , with respect to the donations it receives and the wealth accumulated thereof. The reason behind such endowments is associated with a legend in the Puranas.

It is said that Ventakeswara loaned about 11.4 million gold coins from Kuber for his marriage to Padmavathi. With that money, he hired Viswakarma, the divine architect to create the majestic abode. In remembrance, devotees donate money, gold, and other material endowments to the temple, so Venkateshwara can pay back Kuber. It is said that the donations to Tirupati temple go as high as 22.5 million INR per day .

Another interesting aspect of Tirupati is its fundamental belief in equality and prohibits any sacrificial offerings , unlike many other Hindu temples or as in other sects of Hinduism.

"Abode of Lord Venkateswara Swamy"

Tirupati tourism.

Situated in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is known for Lord Venkateshwara Temple, one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the world. It is also one of the world's richest temples known by different names - Tirumala Temple, Tirupati Temple, and Tirupati Balaji Temple . Tirumala is one of the seven hills in Tirupati, where the main temple is located. The temple is believed to be where Lord Venkateshwara took the form of an idol and is home to the deity Govinda. Tirupati is one of India's oldest cities and is mentioned in many ancient Vedas and Puranas.

Tirupati is the main town, while Tirumala Hills is where Tirupati Balaji Temple is situated. Also called Sri Venkateshvara Swami Vaari Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, believed to be a form of Lord Vishnu, who appeared on earth to save mankind from kali yuga. The famous Tirupati Laddoo, given as a prasad at the temple, has the Geographical indication tag, which means it can only be made and sold at the temple. It is hugely loved by the pilgrims and is generally included in the paid darshan tickets or can be bought from the laddoo counters inside the temple complex. Many devotees also tonsure their heads as an offering to Lord Venkateswara Swamy once their wish is fulfilled or to get rid of their sins and ego. It is done free of cost at  Kalyanakatta  buildings. Another popular ritual at Tirupati Temple is Thulabaram, wherein a devotee sits on one side of the weighing balance scale. In contrast, the other side is filled with materials (like sugar, jaggery, tulsi leaves, banana, gold, and coins) more than the weight of the devotee. This ritual is mostly performed with children and infants. The non-stop chanting of ‘Om Namo Venkatesaya,’ the mad pilgrim rush, and the 8-feet tall idol of Lord Venkateshwara – everything about the Sri Venkateshwara Temple is majestic. Spread over an area of 26 kilometers and is visited by nearly 50,000 pilgrims daily. The Padmavathi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Padmavati, consort of Lord Venkateswara, is situated at Tiruchanoor in Tirupati town. Many devotees believe they should visit Goddess Padmavati and seek her blessings before visiting Lord Venkateswara Swamy at Tirumala. There are other temples in Tirupati too that you can visit, including the Sri Kalahasti temple, Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, the Kondandarama Temple, the Parashurameshwara Temple, and the ISKCON temple. Tirupati is home to a unique geological wonder that you shouldn’t miss out on! The Silathoranam is a natural arch formed out of rocks and is located at the Tirumala Hills.
