Rolling Tuscan hills in Val d'Orcia tour

Val d’Orcia means an experience of Beauty, Relax, Food&Wine: let’s visit together with our insiders’ storytelling

Jump right inside a postcard on this private tour of the Val d’Orcia that starts from your hotel and takes you around the incredible countryside of the southern part of the Siena province in Tuscany to see its famous rolling hills , small Medieval and Renaissance villages, fields of grains, olive groves, and vineyards that all create a unique landscape.

We stroll through the most scenic villages like Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico, Monticchiello, take pictures here and there and even pop into small shops if interested or sip on a glass of wine in a café. We drive along dirt roads through wondrous landscapes to get to a small farm for a field-to-table lunch.

We tailor the ring route of the Val d’Orcia Experience Tour based on your accommodation where we pick you up at around 10 o’clock in the morning in a very comfortable luxury Mercedes Benz vehicle . On board, free water and wi-fi internet connection is always available. Your English-speaking driver will take care of your requests during the day.

After a scenic drive along winding roads in the Tuscan countryside, we reach San Quirico d’Orcia , a quiet and elegant town on the Via Francigena with its gardens inside the walls, Horti Leonini, and various visible Romanesque and Gothic accents as you may see at the Collegiata Church .

It is now time to head to Pienza. The road that connects the two villages is probably one of the most scenic routes in the world with its breathtaking views of hills, fields, stone farmhouses and little chapels featured in many movies. We can stop here and there to take some beautiful pictures or to simply take in the natural beauty around us.

Waves of sunflowers and green grain, changing shades of clay, solitary cypress trees, a tiny tractor trudging up the hill… it is here that all the magnificence of the Val d’Orcia explodes in its boundless mystique and beauty.

Arriving in Pienza , the most romantic village of the Tuscan countryside, is like setting foot into the perfect little Italian town. Inspired by the idea of beauty and harmony , it was built during the Renaissance as wanted by Pope Pius II, who sought to contrast the fame of Siena, the city that had exiled his family.

Simply walking along the narrow cobbled lanes of Pienza with its windows, balconies, and cascades of flowers is a pleasure for the eyes . But walking along the main street, Corso il Rossellino, is where Pienza’s renowned urban plan can be clearly seen: City Hall, the Cathedral of the Assumption, Palazzo Piccolomini are all beautiful and innovative expressions of 15th century architecture.

But Pienza is not only art and history. It is also the small craft shops, the “gelaterie” ice-cream shops, and the famous lane that forms a sort of balcony facing a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia, a place where locals linger and spend time chatting and where couples declare their love to one another.

After this glorious morning, the experience carries on. We now drive into that spectacular postcard view we were just admiring from the hilltop where Pienza sits. A small organic dairy farm is our destination for lunch, and we get there by driving along a winding “strada bianca” which literally means a white road, what we Tuscans call dirt roads. Here, the stars of the show are the sheep which produce the famous Pecorino di Pienza cheese .

On the farm, we have the opportunity to taste the excellent cheese produced here and more. Actually, for lunch we can choose from the many gourmet options on the rich farm-to-table a la carte menu .

In the afternoon, it is time for another drive in true off-road Tuscan style. The village of Monticchiello , another gem, awaits. Here, we can have a little stroll and take some nice pictures of the famous winding and cypress-lined road that is an icon of Tuscany itself.

Last but not least on our itinerary, is a visit to the hot springs of Bagno Vignoni . This charming village was a famous hot spring destination along the Via Francigena, the most important commerce and communication route of the past. Popes, emperors, and noblemen used to come here for political meetings or just for some holidays. Nowadays, we can visit the main square that is actually a big hot spring pool which dates back to the Roman era, shop at the traditional pharmacy, or dip our feet in the natural hot water streams while sipping a glass of wine and admiring the landscape.

At the end of the day, relax on the pleasant drive back to your accommodation at around 4 pm.

Having the day with Mario touring us around Montalcino was easily one of the highlights of our stay in Tuscany. Mario was a pleasure to talk with and was a wealth of information regarding not only the vineyards we visited that day but about the wines, other vineyards and the history of Montalcino. Obviously, with Mario being a native, we felt like we had an insiders view which he was very open in sharing. Brad, wanting to know as much as he could, about Montalcino vineyards, the different growing regions, Brunello di Montalcino and where the best restaurants & enotecas were… Mario had answers to All his never ending questions. While Molly & I had just met Mario that day, we felt we knew him as a friend by days end…which we didn’t want to end. What a fabulous, memorable day. We can’t wait to go back again and maybe this time help pick some grapes or olives! Molto Bene Ciao for now, Brad & Molly Kushnir

Most enjoyable day touring the Montalcino vineyards! Chiara was our guide, and was awesome! Her passion for wine, and her knowledge of Montalcino and local wine were very evident. We communicated in advance so she could find out our wine background, interests, and preferences. We did the six-hour, 2 vineyard tour with lunch included.

Chiara picked us up at our hotel right on time and in a comfortable ride. She took us to 2 small, family-owned vineyards where we got a tour of the vineyard and quality time spent with the winemaker. Chiara acted as translator at the first vineyard where the winemaker did not speak much English. We had nice tastings at each vineyard (in the homes of the winemakers) and the opportunity to purchase wine from each vineyard. Chiara handled the details for shipping back to the US.

After visiting the vineyards, we had a marvelous lunch at the local cooking school (Locandra Demetra). Amazing lunch with an amazing view!!

Highly recommend Montalcino Wine tours and Chiara as a guide!!

y wife and I booked unforgettable wine and food experiences with Chiara this past week. Chiara is a rock star in Montalcino and seems to know everyone in the area. You tell her what you are interested in and let her do her magic. There isn’t a reservation she can’t book. Total access and you will not only enjoy the tastings but the ride and conversation with her is worth the trip as well. She should be the Mayor of Montalcino. In any case she has my vote. 🙂 Also, if you have not done a deeper dive vineyard and food tour in Montalcino, then make it a priority. Just the best!

We can’t possibly recommend Montalcino Wine Tours enough! Our whole experience with them was absolutely fantastic. On the planning side, Chiara was so incredibly helpful and always available to answer questions and give us options for the things we wanted to do. She even helped us arrange transportation out of Montalcino, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. And then the experience itself was perfect. We did a Brunello wine tour with Giovanni, who is extremely knowledgeable about both the Montalcino area and winemaking (we learned more about wine in those hours with Giovanni than we have anywhere else), and it was everything we hoped it would be. Great wine, beautiful lunch, informative, and so much fun. Just tell Chiara and her team what you want to do, and they will make it all happen for you. Thank you SO much, Chiara and Giovanni! Our time in Montalcino was magical and everything we needed to relieve the stress of the last few years.

There are not enough words to explain how wonderful of an experience we had with Mario on our honeymoon. By the end of our trip, we didn’t consider Mario a tour guide, but a good friend, and one that we knew we would be back to visit. His tours are so customized and personal, you feel like you are getting the true insiders view of Tuscany. His family has lived in the region for generations- he speaks about his home with pure contagious compassion. I will never forget the day he dropped us off for our next destination and how sad we were to part ways- we wish we could have had his guidance and company for the entire trip! We can’t wait to go back.

We hired this company for a transfer from Milan to Tuscany and a tour of the Modena and Parma on the way. Originally we were planning on a wine tour in Montalcino with them, but we ran out of time. Unfortunately our plane from the US was several hours late, but we found Giovanni easily at the airport. He had booked a tour of a cheese farm that we also missed sadly. He got us to Modena in time for lunch and a tour around town. He also stopped by a modena balsamic vinegar facility spontaneously, and we were able to get a private tour and pick up our first Italy souvenirs. He drove us to our hotel in Greve and gave us all sorts of Italy info on the way. He is very likeable and easy to talk to on long trips. He is an outdoor enthusiast and I’m sure we be great on an outdoor adventure. If you want a tour of the famous Brunello wineries, I’m confident this would be the group to do it with. They were all from the area and well connected.

Wow! I can’t say enough good things about this tour! We were in Tuscany for a wedding and a group of 13 of us booked this tour. Giovanni and Chiara picked us up at our Villa in 2 really nice, air conditioned vans. Then we were off to our first winery and tasting. We learned so much about the area, wine, weather and any other question we could throw at them!😊. They are so incredibly knowledgeable about the area. The first winery was fantastic, we learned so much about the process and tastes amazing wines. Then they took us to a tour of an Abbey which was so inspiring and beautiful, and then to lunch on their family farm. Holy smokes!! Alessandro, Giovanni’s brother and their family hosts an incredible lunch….you might as well be part of the family as that’s how you feel as soon as you sit down at the table! After a lunch that is so tasty, you are off to another vineyard and tasting. Another great choice! All the staff at both wineries are so friendly and make the tastings so much fun! Then they drove us back to our Villa…we were with them the entire day but it flew by as we were having so much fun learning about wines and the entire Tuscany area. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour! You will be treated to a fantastic day!

We just returned from a fabulous 3 week trip to Italy. Montalcino Wine Tours were there for us each leg of our trip. From transfers Venezia to Cinque Terra, stopping in Verona for lunch; Cinque Terra to Firenze stopping for a tasty lunch on the way. Mario was a very good driver, sensitive to my car sickness! On to our Villa Fonntelle in Montalcino, Giovanni took us for our best day of the trip. Wine tasting and a scrumptious lunch at his restaurant, beautiful view and the best food we’d had in the three weeks! Truffle hunting was another great day, never ending fun with these guys. Mario was a lot fun on our Cortona day trip, they all really went above and beyond a regular tour company.

Our day started with a little adversity with a vehicle, which resulted in getting started a little later than expected, which ultimately caused us to miss first vineyard. Chiara handled the situation perfectly and in no time we were back up and running with a replacement vehicle and we were off for a fantastic day!

Chiara made a few calls whist we were visiting our first vineyard, and was able to make arrangements for us to make a visit to a 3rd vineyard/winery at the end of our day. WOW, talk about going above and beyond!

After our first stop we were taken to lunch at an amazing restaurant right in Montalcino which included wine and whatever we wanted to eat. We were given amazing treatment and service by the owner Antinio and the food was incredible!

After lunch we headed for our 2nd stop was absolutely incredible and were intrigued with her passion for her wines, her family and the pride was evident. we LOVED this stop, highly recommend and the wine was fantastic and free to pour as much as we wanted!

Our final stop was Baricci. Although the production is VERY small, if you love Brunello you have to make it a point to stop in here (if you can get a visit) or at least try their wine while in Montalcino. Francesco, his brother Federico and father Pietro are very busy as they are the heart and soul of this family run winery and we were VERY lucky (thanks to Chiara no doubt) to be able to get a visit to see them just after harvest! Francesco spent so much time with us we couldn’t believe it, his passion is second to none and it shows in the amazing product that they produce there! The POS machine was down during the evening, so we went back the next day to conclude our purchase, the entire family was there again working away! (Side note: They ship to Canada, wooohooo)

Overall the experience provided by Chiara and Montalcino Wine Tours was truly amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who visits the Montalcino area.

Once again, thanks so much for having us!

We asked for a one-day tour of Montalcino wineries, and Giovanni put together the itinerary.

We were 7 travelers, wine lovers but not experts, stopping in Porto Santo Stefano aboard a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise. Our driver, Luca, picked us up at the port in a clean, comfortable, and spacious van. Luca was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny.

We went to a medium sized, well known winery in the morning. We toured the vineyard and cellar and tasted 6 great wines. And these were pretty generous pours for a tasting (this was a theme for the day). We lingered, drank, and ate, and liked the wine so much that we bought several bottles on our way out. With the strong US dollar, we were surprised by the reasonable prices for decently aged (2010, 2012, 2015) Riserva wines.

We visited a nice mix of places, from very small family-run farms to midsized wineries. Each place had a unique brand and take on the wine process so it was nice to see the differences in the process each family does. We loved all the wines, he made purchasing and shipping product home incredibly easy. I hope to get the chance to take this tour again on our next trip to Tuscany.

Both times I had a fantastic and knowledgable driver, awesome lunch, a well thought out and planned itinerary, and flexibility around my specific requests. This last trip in June 2022 we even had a little bit of extra time between appointments and they managed to find an opening at another winery, which ended up having absolutely amazing wine. These wine tours are as good as any I’ve had in other winery locations such as Napa and Sonoma. Highly recommend.

From beginning to end Montalcino Wine Tours was absolutely perfect! We started with email correspondence with Giovanni. We only had one day for a guided tour, so he helped us by organizing the best day. Our guide Chiara was so knowledgeable! She was professional, but also personable and made us feel right at home. Our day began with a truffle hunt with Paolo (and his dog Millie). If you are in Tuscany during truffle hunting seasons, you must book this with Montalcino Wine Tours, specifically Paolo. Again, so knowledgeable. And an unforgettable experience. Our lunch was DIVINE! We had a little extra time in the afternoon, as we were ahead of schedule. Not a problem – Chiara drove us to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo to explore. A beautiful spot to walk off our lunch and take pictures of the gorgeous scenery. We ended our day at La Fornace Winery and sampled their delicious wine! We will definitely be recommending Montalcino Wine Tours to friends and family travelling in the area. It was our favorite day of our entire vacation. Thank you!!

Mario was an outstanding conversationalist we hit it off right away! He took me to Montepulciano and recommended a restaurant and wine for lunch. The scenery was incredible! I loved every minute of my tour which led me through many small villages where I was able to meander through cheese and wine shops. On the way back to where I was staying Mario drove me through Montelcino which is the most quaint town. After a full 8 hours of spectacular scenery and wonderful conversation I was dropped off. It was truly the highlight of my 18 day trip to Italy.

My husband and I booked the full day wine tour through Giovanni months in advance of arriving in Italy. Booking was very smooth over email. Mario, our driver picked us up at our hotel in the morning and assured us we had a great day ahead visiting three different types of wineries with a stop for lunch at Locanda Demtra. He took us to Collosorbo which was an old estate winery owned by a mother and her two daughters. We had a wonderful tour of the estate and the wine cellar which dated back hundreds of years and was so amazing to see! We bought a couple of bottles and Mario assured us him and Giovanni could ship the bottles home to us. Then Mario took us to Costanti. the woman who gave us the tour ( I forgot her name but she was lovely) also did the tasting and the wine was great. We bought another couple of bottles. Mario took some great photos for us in front of the vineyards and Montalcino town. He was a great guide and so knowledgeable about the town because he grew up there. This made the experience very personal which was great! Then he took us to lunch at Locanda Demtra which is owned by Gio and his brother. Wow. As soon as you walk in he kitchen and grounds they smell amazing and they cooked us a fantastic authentic local dish served with great wine overlooking the Tuscan hills. This place also offers cooking classes which unfortunately were booked but the people we met highly recommended them! Our last stop was the smallest winery but to me the most special because of Gemma- one of the owners. She runs it with her father and does everything from harvesting the grapes, to labeling the bottles and running the marketing. She took us through the vineyards and told us her father hand picks every grape for each harvest. Then we went inside for a tasting. At the end of the tasting she offered us her family batch of Vin Santo which made us feel so special and as if she was welcoming us into her home. We bought a few more bottles and our tour came to an end. Mario was so accommodating. He even stopped at a convenience store so my husband could buy some Advil. We left our bottles with Mario to ship home to us. Before dropping us off he recommended one of his favorite local restaurants Il Pozzo and helped us make a reservation. Then gave us his cell phone number in case we needed recommendations the rest of the trip. We ended up texting Mario the next day when we went to Pienza and he recommended a great farm for lunch that also has a cheese factory! Mario truly was a great tour guide from start to finish and we hope to return in the future to do another tour with him! Two days after we arrived home from Italy our wine arrived safe and sound in the US! Truly 5 star service!! This is a must do for your next Italy vacation! Thanks Giovanni and Mario!!!!

I booked a full day in Montalcino with Giovanni in advance of a family trip to Italy (me, my wife, and both sets of our parents). I reached out to a number of tour operators, but many would not do a day trip to Montalcino due to the distance (we were staying at a villa about an hour south, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria). Giovanni ensured us that it would not be a problem and that we would have a fantastic, full day. He could not have been more right.

We were picked up early by our driver for the day, Mario, in a clean, spacious van. Mario was THE BEST – no better resource for a day of being in Montalcino. He has spent his life in and around Montalcino (his grandfather was the fireman, his father the postman, and his brother the Mayor).

Mario took us to two fantastic wineries, to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was absolutely beautiful. We also had an amazing lunch in Montalcino and spent some time walking around the town. On our way back to the villa, Mario insisted that we make two additional stops, first was to see the villa that was featured in Gladiator, and then a stop in Pienza for the pecorino.

All in all a great day and highly recommended!

This day was the highlight of our honeymoon in Italy. I have recommended Mario to anyone I know going to the Tuscany area. He truly made us feel like VIP the entire day. We ended up shipping several cases of the best wine in the world home to the US and now refuse to drink anything else. This was one of the best experiences in my life.

No other touring company could compare to the true hospitality we were shown. We left feeling like family and plan on going back as much as possible to see our friend Mario.

If in Montalcino, not to be missed. Giovanni and Chiara coordinated with us prior to our arrival to understand our interests to customize our day. We were looking for smaller wineries.

Giovanni picked us at 9:45. We visited two wineries in the morning. We spent time walking in the vineyards and cellars talking about the wine growing process and the special policies for cellaring and bottling the Rosso and Brunello de Montalcino wines. And of course tasting the wines. We met the winemaker at the second winery.

Next up was lunch at Locanda Demetra, a small restaurant and cooking school located just outside the city with beautiful views of the countryside. We ate outside and had an appetizer sampler, two small pasta dishes, a pork medallion, a bottle of Rosso de Montalcino, dessert of chocolate cake and gelato, and coffee. All part of the tour costs.

After a leisurely lunch, we visited the Abbey at San Antimo for a quick visit and off to one last winery.

We finished the day around 6:15 pm. We never felt rushed. We had time to soak it all in, ask questions, and really enjoy the whole experience. We bought wine along the way. All of the wineries ship back to USA. We decided to take our wine and let this company ship them all back together. Quite reasonable for international shipping. All of the wines from this region are of high quality and very reasonable comparing to Napa Valley for similar quality wines.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is a wine enthusiast.

Where do I begin? For starters, the experience was so fantastic the first time, that we booked Mario for a second tour on our return two years later. Mario will gladly pick you up wherever you are staying, he’s prompt, his car is clean, and the anticipation for a day of wine tasting is next to none! Mario arranged for us to have private tours and tastings at each of the wineries we visited, and each one was just as fantastic as the one before. Mario is extremely knowledgable on all things Brunello wine….from how the location of the vineyard to how the grapes are processed and the impact on the flavor and quality of the wines.

Thanks to Mario, our wine cellar is full of many different Brunello wines, and each time we pop the cork, we travel back to exactly where the grapes were born. Absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, book Mario for your Montalcino wine tour!

The hosts at each winery were wonderful and very knowledgeable about their wines and the history. We also visited Sant’Antimo Abbey in between winery visits and had a spectacular lunch.

Well well well worth the money and would use these guys for a tour again. Highly recommended

We had the most amazing and memorable day in Montalcino thanks to Giovanni!! My boyfriend and I scheduled a private tour with Giovanni, and he was punctual, knowledgeable, warm, and created the most perfect day for us in this small wine country city. He picked us up from our hotel, and we headed to our first winery. This was a small winery, that took the time to give a tour of their vineyard and their facility. It gave us such an appreciation of the wine we enjoyed later that visit. We met the winery owner and his daughter, and got know them and their experience as a winery owner in Italy.

From there we went to a medium sized winery and then a large one. Each appointment was set up in advance by Giovanni, and they were ready and expecting us. It was such a neat experience and not at all like the herd feeling we get when wine tasting in the US.

In between we went to lunch at a small restaurant in Giovanni’s village – which was so quaint – only 53 people live there! The food, wine, and service were amazing!

Giovanni was so knowledgeable, professional, and warm. He made this experience an experience of a lifetime and I would refer him and go back to him in a heartbeat!

We actually did the cooking class with his brother the next day, I’ll be sharing a review with them as well. Another absolute must while in Montalcino!!

Thank you Giovanni for the memories of a lifetime!

We enjoyed an all day wine tour with Giovanni in September during a 4 day stay in Tuscany. We were were traveling with our daughter and her husband, who had hired Giovanni two years previous, so we knew we were in for a treat. He arranged 2 different winery visits and tastings in the Montalcino area, plus a delicious Al Fresco lunch overlooking his own vineyard. One winery was a small scale, personal operation, and the other a more sophisticated larger scale winery, both with tours by the proprietors. The wineries were nicely curated for our interests, and we were delighted with both. The tours were fascinating, in depth and inspiring. We were picked up promptly in a spacious van, and Giovanni was quite personable and engaging and easy to talk with. We thoroughly enjoyed his company and would highly recommend his tours.

Stunning day on horseback in wine paradise.

We had an amazing day with Giovanni and his beautiful horses! The Montalcino landscape could not have been more stunning, and having the opportunity to ride among and experience the local wineries was an experience we will never forget. Plus, the lunch and wine tasting at local winery and restaurant was delicious and gave us an up-close look at how wine is grown, bottled and sold in this unique region.

Val d’Orcia: A Wine Tasting Itinerary

Flavors of the Landscape: Wines to Taste & Vineyards to Visit

It is definitely not easy to makie a name for yourself and your wines in Tuscany when you grow up right between two great Tuscan wines worldwide: the Brunello di Montalcino (from the area around Montalcino) and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (from around Montepulciano).

With determination and a good base of locally grown grapes, the wines of all of the other wine producers in the area not falling in either of those areas have created the DOC appellation for the Val d’Orcia . These have started drawing attention considering their high quality and diversity. The Orcia DOC is a recent addition to the recognized denomination wines in Tuscany, acquiring their official designation on February 14, 2000.

The Hills of Val d'Orcia

Besides the fabulous landscapes which have been awarded World Heritage Status from UNESCO , the Val d’Orcia excels in locally produced items, especially in the area of food.

Aside from the wine, this area is also well-known for its production of extra virgin olive oil , white truffles , salumi, saffron , their own special brand of pig called “Cinta Senese” , the big white Chianina cows and who can forget the sheep , which result in a wide selection of "pecorino" cheeses .

A Denomination in Val D’Orcia

The rich finds of Etruscan and Roman artifacts related to wine and the growing of the grapes in the area are proof that the Val d'Orcia area has a long history of producing renowned wines . Even the names of some of the towns, like that of Bagno Vignoni where "vignoni" comes from the word vigna, meaning vineyard, is a testament that this area has always been producing wine.

The production area is nestled between Montalcino and Montepulciano , and includes the following communes: Buonconvento , Castiglione d’Orcia, Pienza , Radicofani, San Giovanni d’Asso, San Quirico d’Orcia and Trequanda as well as including parts of Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena.

Due to climate change and the reduction of spring frost (which would once play havoc with grape production), it has become possible to take the wine production in this area to a higher level .

Sant Antimo, an area for the Orcia DOC wines in Tuscany

What Distinguishes an Orcia DOC Wine

D.o.c. wines - controlled designation of origin.

D.O.C. wines are regulated by a set of production rules and are distinguished by a very precise area of origin which may also include sub-areas that limit like a certain village, hamlet, farm, or vineyard. When you find a label with D.O.C. attached to the capsule of the bottle, they you know that it refers to a government guarantee of the origin of the wine.

Two of the Tuscany's local grapes - the Sangiovese, a red variety, and Trebbiano, a white grape - excel in this area and they are the base for the wines which are produced under the Orcia Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status. The DOC red wine is composed of at least 60% Sangiovese and the remaining 40% is a blend of other varieties . The dry white wine and Vin Santo style DOC wines are composed of at least 50% Trebbiano with other local grapes filling out the rest of the blend.

An itinerary for exploring the area

This area invites not only those curious to do wine tastings but also those who love the Tuscan landscape and a genuine Tuscan meal. The consortium for the Val d’Orcia wines is well organized with a website and map for picking out the wineries that can offer a visit to the cantina , the vineyards, a wine tasting experience and some that cal also provide a tasting of many of the other products from the area. In fact the Consortium have quite a lofty and appreciated goal:

turn casual visitors into avid consumers, connoisseurs, and ambassadors for our Orcia wines.

If you find yourself wandering the hills of Val d’Orcia in April, then save the date for the Orcia Wine Festival held in San Quirico d'Orcia every year. For those of you looking to combine the area's pecorino cheese, a bit of folklore and wine, then mark your calendar for the first week of September, because in addition to soaking in the lovely late summer colors of the area, you can partecipate in the Fiera di Caccio (the cheese market) in Pienza .

Cheese Market in Pienza every September (Fiera del Cacio)

Since this is a wine region which is relatively new, many of the vineyards, though steeped in family tradition, are boasting modern facilities , organic methods of planting and growing and are family-owned operations.

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Montepulciano

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Dopo aver gustato e apprezzato i piatti della tradizione toscana è d’obbligo una bella passeggiata per il centro storico di Montepulciano anche per favorire la digestione 😉

Cosa vedere a Montepulciano

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Arriverai in Piazza Grande , il cuore della città, che ospita il Palazzo comunale , il Duomo con la sua grande facciata incompiuta e il Pozzo de’ Grifi e dei Leoni che risale ad epoca rinascimentale .

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Prima della visita in cantina abbiamo optato per un giro nel centro storico di Montalcino , grazioso ma forse troppo turistico. Anche qui abbiamo deliziato il nostro palato con ottimo cibo toscano:

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Cosa assaggiare assolutamente in Val d’Orcia

prosciutti e formaggi, pappardelle al sugo di lepre, il pecorino di Pienza, i pici conditi in modo diverso. A conclusione dei pasti non possono mancare i cantucci da bagnare nel vin santo.

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Dove parcheggiare in Val d’Orcia

all’ingresso delle diverse città troverai parcheggio senza problemi

Dove dormire in Val d’Orcia

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Dove mangiare in Val d’Orcia

oltre a quelli già indicati ti consiglio di fermarti nei posti caratteristici che incontrerai per strada che offrono del buon cibo toscano e dell’ottimo vino.

Where is the Val d’Orcia?

The Val d’Orcia (Orcia Valley in Italian) is a valley in Southern Tuscany, in the province of Siena.  Very generally, you could say it’s bordered by the Crete Senesi hills (north), Monte Amiata (south), Montepulciano (east) and Montalcino (west).

Distance to the Val d’Orcia (using Pienza) from:

  • Florence  – 1 hr 30 min (115km)
  • Rome  – 2 hr 20 min (190km)
  • Siena  – 1 hr (55km)

Reasons to Visit the Val d’Orcia

Cypress trees line the road in the Val d'Orcia in Southern Tuscany.

If photos of the Val d’Orcia aren’t enough to convince you, here are a few reasons:

  • It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2004) along with the historic center of Pienza (1996)
  • It has some of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Italy – think gently rolling hills that change color depending on the season, driveways lined with cypress trees
  • It’s home to some of Italy’s most famous wines
  • You’ll find some of Italy’s best hot springs here
  • You can have a relaxing stay in an agriturismo
  • It’s home to some of the most iconic photos of Italy

Reasons You May Want to Skip the Val d’Orcia

The Val d’Orcia isn’t for everyone.  You may want to pass on the valley if:

  • You need a lot of nightlife
  • You’re not excited about nature and instead prefer city life
  • You want your Italian vacation to be full of museums and action
  • You don’t want to spend time in a car
  • You prefer to travel around Italy using public transport

If this is the case, you should check out some nearby cities like Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, and even Siena.

My Favorite Times to Visit the Val d’Orcia

Group of cypress trees in an empty field. It's nearing sunset time. Grass is bright green and there is a ring of dirt around the base of the trees.

You’ll find a different Val d’Orcia in each season.

Spring – This is my favorite time of year in the Val d’Orcia.  The rolling hills are bright green, and you’ll see scattered fields of yellow (rapeseed).  It looks like the Microsoft Windows screensaver.  You’ll get photo-friendly views of the cypress-lined roads and if you’re like me, you’ll pull over constantly to say hi to the little lambs in the fields!  Villages have pretty flower boxes out decorating windowsills and front steps.

Summer – The fields change to a golden yellow, but it’s still gorgeous out.  Days are toasty but evenings are lovely for outdoor meals and strolls in the small villages.  The villages feel lively, making it my second favorite time of year to visit.

Fall – The fields are brown with tilled earth and hay bales in some places.  I avoid hiking during the fall because the mud in the Val d’Orcia is sticky, so you’ll end up with platform hiking boots (and it’s so hard to get off I completely avoid hiking here if it’s rained).

Winter – I love the light in the winter in the Val d’Orcia.  We like to visit for day trips in the winter but find the towns can be quiet (and a little boring).  If you can visit for Christmas markets, be sure to stop in to see Montepulciano’s (it’s one of our favorites, especially with kids).  Keep in mind that in the winter in the Val d’Orcia (and Tuscany countryside in general), accommodations can be chilly and it sometimes feels difficult to find an open restaurant.  But during the day it’s often sunny.

How Long to Spend in the Val d’Orcia

In an ideal situation, you’d have 5-7 days to explore the towns, have leisurely meals, and enjoy the views.

However, you can still have a lovely visit in a shorter amount of time.  If you can, spend two nights, and have three days.  In that time you could visit 1-2 places per day.  For example:

Day 1 : Arrive in the Val d’Orcia.  Visit Pienza and Montepulciano.  Spend the night in an agriturismo.

Day 2: Visit Bagno Vignoni (village and hot springs) and Montalcino.  Stay in the same agritursimo.

Day 3: Take a cooking class or head out to take photos before continuing on to your next destination.

Finally, you could visit on a day trip.  You won’t ‘see it all,’ but you’ll get a taste of the valley and you can always come back!  We often visit from Florence on a day trip and it’s a big day but worthwhile.

Not-To-Miss Val d’Orcia Towns and Villages

Pienza – pope pius and pecorino.

An empty Piazza Pio II in Pienza, Italy on a sunny day. Church ahead and palazzi on either side.

Pienza is the imagined ideal town of Pope Pius II.  Sampling its famous pecorino di Pienza is a must while in town.  Wander the tiny lanes (including some named after love and kisses), and check out the views of the valley.  Read more in One Day in Pienza .

Montepulciano – Lively Town with Epic Views

Stone well in corner of piazza. Grass growing in cracks between bricks on the ground. Lions and Medici crest with 6 balls decorate top part of well.Stone buildings in background.

This medieval town perched on a hill overlooking the valley is lively and full of wine shops and wine bars that showcase the local Vino Nobile di Montepulciano .  Take time to walk the old streets, visit the Piazza Grande, and explore the underground cellars.  The valley views can’t be beat!  Read more in my guide to Montepulciano .

Bagno Vignoni – A Relaxing Soak in Thermal Waters

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

One of our favorite villages in Tuscany, and the perfect place to soak in the healing thermal waters.  Or, sip on wine next to the main piazza that’s actually a thermal bath (no swimming, but still nice to look at).  Read more about Bagno Vignoni and Bagno Vignoni with Kids .

San Quirico d’Orcia – Authentic Tuscan Village Life

Empty street in a small village in the Tuscan countryside. You can see stone buildings on either side of the street and a few people out walking. They're dressed in winter clothing.

A nice town to visit if you’re tired of looking at souvenir shops and just want to see a ‘real’ town.  Take a quick stroll through town.  A visit pairs well with nearby Bagno Vignoni.

Montalcino – A Wine Lover’s Delight

Piazza in Montalcino, Italy. You can see shops on either side and the main clock tower at the far end of the piazza.

Wine lovers should not miss Montalcino!  The town is tiny but worth a wander.  Stop in at the wine bars and wine shops and try some Brunello di Montalcino.  Or, visit one of Montalcino’s vineyards.  If you’re in town, you’re so close to the Sant’Antimo Abbey – I always feel more calm after a little bit of time wandering around the grounds.  Read more in my guide to Montalcino .

Monticchiello – The Val d’Orcia’s Tiny Treasure

Beautiful early evening sun shines on old red brick wall and entrance to a home in Monticchiello, Italy. A cat naps on the doorstep and plants decorate the entrance.

Monticchiello is tiny in size but large in authenticity.  Check out the epic countryside views, dine in one of the excellent restaurants, and see the teatro povero if the timing’s right.  Read more in my guide to little Monticchiello .

Good To Know:   You can also stop in to check out Radicofani and Castiglione d’Orcia, but my favorites are those listed above.  And, while not technically in the Val d’Orcia, we also love visiting Buonconvento and Monte Oliveto Maggiore when we’re in the area.

My Favorite Things to See and Do in the Val d’Orcia

Besides checking out the towns and villages of the Val d’Orcia, there’s plenty more to keep you occupied!  Here’s what our family likes to do (and the activities we share when friends and family come to visit):

Take Photos

Green grass with cypress trees in a line in the back.

When you see those breathtaking photos and postcards of Tuscany, they’re likely from the Val d’Orcia.  This is the land of the cypress trees – in clusters and along driveways and roads.  Some of the most famous are the cluster near San Quirico and the lined roads near Monticchiello and La Foce.

Other famous photo subjects include the Vitaleta Chapel, the hilltop villages, and the sheep in the fields.

Learn How Pecorino Cheese is Made

And then eat it!

You can learn about cheese making and see it being made at farms around Pienza, including:

  • Ernello’s cheese farm ( Famiglia Armellini ) – my top pick!  Ernello and his family are amazing and they’ll show you how they make the cheese on their small farm and then you can taste it along with the family’s olive oil.
  • Podere il Casale – if you don’t want to do the whole cheese making demo, you can also have a picnic on the farm
  • Caseificio Cugusi – participate in the cheese tasting, which includes an explanation of how the pecorino is made; or, just enjoy the cheeses as part of your picnic on the farm

Sample Local Wines

View of new vineyard and forested countryside in Tuscany on sunny day with puffy white clouds.

If you’re into wines, don’t miss visits to Montepulciano and Montalcino.  You can try wines inside the towns in wine shops and at wine bars, or visit some of the vineyards and wineries surrounding the towns.  Some of my favorites are (type of wine in parentheses):

  • Ciacci Piccolomini (Montalcino)
  • Tenuta Torciano (Montalcino)
  • Castello Banfi (Montalcino)
  • Cantine Innocenti (Montepulciano)
  • Poliziano (Montepulciano)
  • Palazzo Vecchio (Montepulciano)

This is one of my favorite places to ride and hike in Italy because the landscape is so open and gorgeous.  I find myself ‘oohing’ and ‘aaahing’ still, after a couple of decades being active in this valley.

While there are plenty of strade bianche for mountain biking, I’m a bigger fan of the road cycling down here.

You can rent mountain bikes, road bikes, and e-bikes in Montepulciano (best bet) and Pienza.  Also check with your accommodation as sometimes they have them (although they probably aren’t as well-maintained as those you can rent).

I always enjoy the roads around Pienza/Montepulciano/Monticchiello/La Foce, but you really can’t go wrong.

Helpful Tip:   Keep in mind that it’s hilly(!) so don’t feel shy about renting an e-bike.  And, double-check your route with the bike shop or a local if you want to avoid gravel roads.

Francigena, walking on gravel road Monticchiello, walking below Pienza.

Good To Know:   You can ride part of the famous Eroica route.

If you’re a hiker – my favorite places to walk in the Val d’Orcia are the gravel roads below Pienza and the gravel road that runs between Pienza, Monticchiello, and Montepulciano.

Below Pienza is a great option because you can do out-and-back routes – and you’ll appreciate the views on both parts, because on the way back you see the valley and on the way out you see Pienza.  You can also do some hiking in fields but be ready to turn back and retrace your steps – sometimes your route will dead end.

The gravel road that runs through Monticchiello is a nice option if you are up for a big hike and have time to stop for lunch in Monticchiello.  You can also do an out and back from Pienza or Montepulciano – easier because you don’t have to worry about transport.

Good To Know:   You can also walk part of the Via Francigena.

Go on a Road Trip

Man standing by rear door of white station. It's parked on the side of the road. In the background are gently rolling green hills and a cloudy sky.

In order to take in all of the views of the Val d’Orcia, hop in your car! Stop in the villages, seek out photo spots, and find the perfect place to stop and have a picnic.

Soak in Hot Springs

Turquoise water in a hot spring. You can see white minerals making a sort of 'mountain' in the background. Brown leaves on tree hanging over the water. Rocks to the left and some trees in back right.

Southern Tuscany is a prime area for hot springs and if you’re visiting the Val d’Orcia, you’ve got a couple of great options – Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo. If you’re interested in a spa experience, head to Bagno Vignoni. Otherwise, Bagni San Filippo is an excellent choice for enjoying hot springs in nature – don’t miss the Balena Bianca (white whale)!

Stay in an Agriturismo

Green earth, rolling hills, cypress-lined drive, and white clouds in the Tuscan countryside.

A classic part of a visit to Tuscany and the Val d’Orcia is spending a night (or two, or five) in an agriturismo.  Agriturismi are tradionally farmhouses that have opened up to tourism.  It’s even in the name – agri (as in agriculture) + turismo (tourism).

Book a room and settle in to the slow life on a farm.  Wander the olive grove in the morning.  Pet the house cats.  Read an entire book (like War in the Val d’Orcia ).  Sip the local wines. Watch the sunset.  And repeat.

Explore Small Villages

Front of old stone building in Tuscany. Late afternoon light shines on the stone walls and the potted plants decorating the front entrance.

True, there aren’t any big cities in the Val d’Orcia, but if possible, try to add at least one tiny village to your itinerary, like Monticchiello or San Quirico d’Orcia.  There’s not much to see or do besides have a meal, stroll the cobblestone streets, or sip on a glass of local red wine.  But, that’s the beauty of visiting them.

Climb a Tower

View of Tuscan countryside and the roofs and upper stories of buildings in the town of Montepulciano.

Can’t get enough of the views of the Val d’Orcia?  Why not get a little higher up for an even better vista.  Our favorite tower climbs in the area are in Montepulciano (especially to see the Christmas market in Piazza Grande) and the fortezza in Montalcino (it’s an easy climb up to the walls and you can sample wines at the enoteca inside when you’re finished).

More Options:   Rocca di Tentennano in Rocca d’Orcia or the fortezza (fortress) in Radicofani.

Where and What to Eat in the Val d’Orcia

Val d’orcia restaurants to try.

Front entrance of restaurant in Tuscany. Cobblestone street, vines decorate the stone walls, and there is a table with chairs set up to the left of the glass door. Signs and Michelin stickers decorate the door. Menu posted to right of door.

Oh so many!  But don’t underestimate a picnic in this part of Tuscany – you can pick up ingredients at a supermarket or little alimentari and have a meal with a view!

Here are some recommendations, in no particular order:

Ristorante Daria (Monticchiello) – Tuscan dishes using local ingredients; have aperitivo at the Daria enoteca before your meal

Il Rossellino (Pienza) – traditional southern Tuscan cooking in a charming piazza (try to sit outdoors)

Podere il Casale or Caseificio Cugusi (countryside) – have a picnic with pecorino cheese

Osteria Acquacheta (Montepulciano) – this is a place to eat beef!

Dopolavoro La Foce (La Foce) – nice place to stop near one of the famous cypress-lined roads; come here if you’re looking for something a little less traditional; unique dishes

Trattoria al Vecchio Forno (San Quirico d’Orcia) – lovely outdoor garden area; traditional Tuscan dishes

Ristorante 13 Gobbi (Montefollonico) – they do the ‘pasta in the cheese wheel’ and I enjoy it every time; in a tiny village; combine it with a visit to Cantine Innocenti

Lupaia (countryside) – my pick for a romantic meal

Get gelato at Buon Gusto Gelateria in Pienza or Sgarbi in Montepulciano.

If you’re looking for fine dining options, check out my post on Tuscany’s Michelin-Star Restaurants .

What to Eat & Drink in the Val d’Orcia

You’ll start to notice a lot of the same ingredients and dishes on menus in the Val d’Orcia:

  • Pecorino (sheep’s milk) cheese, perfect for picnics
  • Pici pasta , especially with ragù al cinghiale (wild boar sauce)
  • Salame di cinghiale (wild boar salami), perfect for picnics
  • Prosciutto di cinta senese (cured ham made with a local pig), my kids love this
  • Ribollita – bread and veggie soup, perfect on a chilly day
  • Panzanella – bread and veggie salad, perfect in the spring or summer
  • Gelato – especially in Pienza and Montepulciano – See my Favorite Gelaterie in Tuscany
  • Wine – area specialties include Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Vino Rosso di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, Morellino di Scansano, Orcia DOC

Where to Stay in the Val d’Orcia

Thermal bath with a view of the countryside in Tuscany.

Your main options for accommodation are to stay in an agriturismo in the countryside or stay in a hotel or apartment in one of the towns or villages.

What you choose depends on your goals and situation.  Some things you may want to consider:

  • Do you need a car?
  • Do you want to be within walking distance of restaurants?
  • Do you want a swimming pool?
  • Do you need a kitchen?
  • When are you visiting (summer, winter)?

I think the ideal place to stay is in an agriturismo, but a town stay can be more convenient and interesting, depending on when you’re visiting (and what your travel style and goals are).

I’ll list a few options for each:

Agriturismo / Countryside Stays

Agriturismo Il Rigo – One of my favorite countryside stays in Italy.  Nothing fancy – just epic views of the Val d’Orcia, delicious food, and kind hosts.  Good base for walks on the strade bianche in the valley, and it’s a quick drive to San Quirico and Bagno Vignoni.  You can also take a cooking class.

Lupaia – Boutique hotel with stunning views.  Sip Montepulciano wines while looking out at the vineyards their grapes come from.  This is where I want my husband to take me on a romantic weekend trip (Matteo, are you reading this?).

Castello di Velona – Pure luxury with one of my favorite views ever from the swimming pool area (you won’t want to leave).  You can also soak in the hot spring bath.  Modern interiors.

Agriturismo Le Ragnaie – Stylish and elegant, with epic views and a pool – and you’re just outside Montalcino.

Agriturismo Casalpiano – family-friendly agriturismo with pool and casual Tuscan-style rooms and apartments.

Agriturismo La Fonte – classic Tuscan agriturismo with apartments; pool has gorgeous views; on-site restaurant (worth visiting even if you’re not staying here)

Villa La Fonte all’Opio – great for families – plenty of green space for running around, fenced pool area; country views

Altesino Suites – Wine lovers will recognize the name.  Yes, you can stay on the estate. Simple Tuscan-style interiors in the apartments.  Good option if you want to do some of your own cooking.

Castello Banfi – famous for its wine, but it also has an incredible luxury property.

In Town Hotels / Apartments

B&B Daria – A quiet space in the tiny village of Monticchiello.  Rooms, common areas, and outdoor spaces are lovingly decorated.  This is a place to relax and rejuvenate.

Albergo Le Terme – If you want a base in Bagno Vignoni but plan on spending a lot of time out and about exploring, you’ll love this simple hotel in town (with spa and thermal bath).

Hotel Posta Marcucci – Elegant, historic hotel in Bagno Vignoni.  You can use the thermal pools and the spa – or sit in a lounge chair and enjoy the views.  Relaxing, romantic, and I find it to be very quiet (so if you have energetic kids like mine you may want to pass on this place).

Giardino Segreto Pienza – I’ve stayed here on quick trips to Pienza and appreciate that it’s right in town.  Simple, casual furnishings, a little garden outside the rooms, and sweet owners.

La Bandita Townhouse – Chic in-town rooms on a tiny lane in Pienza.  If you like a more modern room (and aren’t so into the Tuscan countryside décor) then this place is for you.  Not to be confused with La Bandita (in the valley, closed in 2023).

La Chiusa – I’ve stayed here quite a few times and appreciate the casual feel and that it’s a quick walk into the tiny hamlet of Montefollonico.  I love sitting on the walls in front in the evening and enjoying the views.  There’s also a nice cooking class here.

Transport to and Around the Val d’Orcia

Blue road signs point to signs for village in the Val d'Orcia in Italy. In the background is bright green grass and blue sky and rolling hills.

Driving in the Val d’Orcia

The best way to get to and around the Val d’Orcia is with your own car.  If you’re not interested in driving, you can also get a private driver (NCC – noleggio con conducente ).

I don’t recommend trying to visit Val d’Orcia with public transportation – you’ll spend your entire time traveling or waiting for transport.

Good To Know:   I have recommended drivers on my Tuscany Resources page .  A kind and reliable driver in the area is Alessandro Pierangioli , based out of Montalcino.

Good To Know:   If you really don’t want to drive, you could also take a taxi (or get a private driver) to your accommodation and either move around on foot, by taxi, or by bicycle.  This option works if you’re planning on having a relaxing stay and don’t need to move around to see a lot during your visit.

Read more about Renting a Car in Tuscany Tuscany Without a Car Important Italian Road Signs

Helpful Tip:   One of my all time favorite roads is near here – the road that goes through the Crete Senesi from Taverna d’Arbia to Asciano .  I call it the ‘roller coaster road’ – it’s got a lot of ups and downs as it winds through the ‘clay hills’ of Siena, past cypress-lined drives, rolling hills, and grazing sheep.  It’s at its best in the spring when the hills are bright green.

Val d’Orcia Tuscany FAQ

Don’t drive up to Monte Amiata expecting amazing views – it’s a wooded area.  There’s not really anything to see or do up top, but if you love chestnuts, visit in the fall to collect them!  If you’re a cyclist, it’s a fun climb up!

You can walk the main street in 5 minutes, but the beauty of the village lies in wandering and taking in the little side streets and alleys.  I’d allow at least a couple of hours for exploring and stopping for a meal or glass of wine.

The Geographical Cure

2 Days In The Val d’Orcia Itinerary

Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia is the perfect spot for a weekend surrounded by breathtaking pastoral countryside.

This area is a beautiful blend of history and scenery, offering some of the most pristine and picturesque views in Tuscany.

With its rolling hills in shades of ochre and green, dense pine woods, olive groves, and vineyards, the Val d’Orcia is also known for its natural hot springs and charming walled hilltop towns.

famous zig zag road near Monticchiello and La Foce

What’s more, it remains a peaceful retreat, free from the usual tourist throngs, providing an authentic and tranquil Tuscan experience.

The Val d’Orcia is famous for its depictions in Renaissance art and cinema. Parts of The Gladiator , The English Patient , Twilight New Moon , Romeo and Juliet , and Under the Tuscan Sun were filmed there.

What Is The Val d’Orcia?

The Val d’Orcia is a picturesque natural landscape that’s a UNESCO Heritage Site .

It’s an austerely beautiful part of Tuscany, just southwest of the hill town of Montepulciano in the province of Siena.

Pinterest pin for 2 days in the Val d'Orcia itinerary

For perhaps the first time in Europe, during the Renaissance, the Val d’Orcia was deliberately developed with aesthetics in mind.

The uncultivated land was tilled, leaving small woods between plots of land. Cypress trees were planted, leading to great estates.

The area is scattered with farm houses and tiny villages. It’s a harmonious blend of nature and mankind.

If you visit in the spring, the fields are green and filled with poppies. In the summer, there are reams of sunflowers. In the fall, there are great rolls of hay scattered over golden fields, following the harvest.

Where Is The Val d’Orcia?

Val d’Orcia is a valley in the province of Siena in southern Tuscany. The region extends from Siena to Monte Amiata. It’s the perfect place to take a weekend road trip.

The Val d’Orcia includes the towns of Volterra, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Montichiello, San Quirico d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni, and Pienza.

How To Get To The Val d’Orcia

By far, the easiest way to tour the Val d’Orcia is by car. You could road trip there from Siena (45 minutes), Florence (1.5 hours), Umbria (1 hour), or even from Rome (2:15 hours).

If you’re coming from the north, you should take the road through Crete Senesi. It’s a moon-like landscape made of hill after hill of freshly plowed clay.

Where To Stay In The Val d’Orcia

If you’re only in the Val d’Orcia for 2 days or a weekend, I would pick somewhere central to stay. The best spot is probably in or near Pienza. But you can also stay in a couple different places for variety.

Driving distances are close, so you can just pick something that appeals to you.

Some lovely hotels and resorts in the region include:

  • Borgo Finocchieto (Buonconvento)
  • Adler Thermae Spa Resort Hotel (Bagno Vignoni)
  • Terre di Nano (an agriturismo near Monticchiello)
  • Borgo Tre Rose (agriturismo near Montepulciano)

2 Days In The Val d’Orcia Itinerary

Here’s how to spend the perfect weekend or two days in the beautiful Val d’Orcia, pottering around its adorable hill towns.

Day 1 Of Val d’Orcia Itinerary

On day 1 on your weekend in the Val d’Orcia, you can visit the towns of Buonconvento, San Quirico d’Orcia, Montalcino, Bagno Vigoni, and/or Bagni San Filippo.

They’re all fairly small and clustered close together.

But, still, you should start early, to see all the highlights. If it seems too busy, you can always eliminate a stop.

main street in Buonconvento

Buonconvento

Your first point of call is Buonconvento. The town is only 18 miles south of Siena and 62 miles from Florence. Its name derives from the Latin word for “happy gathering place.”

The town is famous for receiving a visit from Barack Obama in 2017.

Buonconvento is a small walled hamlet considered among the most beautiful villages in Italy . The main street is Via Soccini. There, you’ll find most of the town’s famous buildings, including the Palazzo Podestarile and the Palazzo Communale.

You should check out the Church of St. Peter and St Paul. It dates from the 14th century, but was “Baroque-ified.” The most valuable works from the church are now in the town’s Museum of Sacred Art.

For some folk history, you can pop into the Museo della Mezzzadria Senese, which shares tells the story of the region’s agriculture.

cityscape of Montalcino, a must visit town with 2 days in the Val d'Orcia

The beautiful town of Montalcino is just 15 minutes down the road from Buonconvento.

Montalcino is a pretty village of medieval perfection. It’s crowned by a fairytale castle, blessed with magnificent views, and edged with vineyards.

The town is known for its Brunello wine, one of the world’s most beloved reds. While in Montalcino, you can have a wine tasting and lunch at a medieval castle  or take a  3 hour tour of the Brunello vineyards .

narrow street in Montalcino with a view of the fortress

Montalcino’s historic center has barely changed in centuries. The main square is the Piazza del Popolo, with a Gothic loggia and clock tower.

The town is dominated by the mighty and imposing Rocca fortress. It was built in 1361 when Montalcino was captured from Florence by Siena.

From the ramparts, you’ll have spectacular views. The fortress also has a tasting room for oenophiles.

From Montalcino, it’s just 6 miles down the road to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo .

It’s a beautiful Romanesque building set amidst vineyards and cypresses. The 13th century abbey was likely founded by Charlemagne in the 9th century. If you are lucky, you can listen to the monks’ Gregorian chants.

San Quirico d'Orcia

San Quirico d’Orcia

Your next stop is San Quirico d’Orcia, just 17 minutes down the road. On the way to San Quirico, you can visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Vitaleta.

It’s an austere and isolated landmark in the Val d’Orcia. You can spot the chapel from the scenic drive along SP146.

San Quirico is a tiny hilltop village that was built along the Via Francigena. The town is famous for its food and wine traditions.

Chapel of Our Lady of Vitaleta

The village center of San Quirico is completely pedestrianized. The town is dotted with Romanesque churches. It’s so quaint you may want to move right in.

The top attraction is the magnificent Collegiate Church of San Quirico and Giulitta. It’s an outstanding 12th century Romanesque church right off the Piazza Chigi.

At the back of the Collegiate is the Palazzo Chigi. The pretty pink palazzo with 17th century frescos serves as the town hall. This is also where you’ll find the tourist office.

Bagno Vigoni

Bagno Vigoni

Bagni Vigoni is a tiny slip of a village situated on a hill just 10 minutes from San Quirico. The village is famous for its main square, the Piazza delle Sorgenti.

Except it’s not a square exactly. Rather, it’s a large open pool, which bubbles with waters from sulfurous hot springs below.

The Romans bathed here, as did the Medici . Pope Pius II came here from Pienza. The Medici built the Renaissance arcade surrounding the spring.

geothermal pool and hot spring in Bagni San Filippo

Bagni San Fillipo

If you have any time left in your day or skipped Bagno Vigoni, head a bit further south for a thermal spa soak in Bagni San Fillipo.

Like Bagno Vigoni, the village developed around a main square with a vast hot water pool. But, today, you can only admire it and can’t hop in for a swim.

But the town is home to other natural thermal springs. They’re rich in minerals and make for a perfect spa day. Because of the minerals, the water has a white-blue color.

The limestone waterfall (nicknamed the “White Whale”) and hot pools are surrounded by forests. The springs are completely free to visit.

pretty lane in Pienza, a must visit town with a weekend in the Val d'Orcia

Day 2 Of Val d’Orcia Itinerary

On day 2 in the Val d’Orcia, you’ll visit the towns of Pienza, Montichiello, and Montepulciano.

Pienza is an adorable town known for its Renaissance architecture and pecorino cheeses. You should park outside the main gate.

Pienza was the first “ideal Renaissance town.” Pope Pius II transformed his birthplace into a town consistent with the principles of architecture set out in the treatise by famed architect Leon Battista Alberti.

The result is a classical set of monumental buildings that include the splendid Piazza Pio II, the Duomo, and the Palazzo Piccolomini.

pretty lane in Pienza, a must visit with a weekend in the Val d'Orcia

The Piccolomini Palace was the domestic summer residence of the Piccolomini family. Its spacious loggias face the countryside and look out over the first “hanging garden” to be laid out since antiquity.

The palace is so beautiful that it was used by Zeffirelli in filming Romeo and Juliet .

Also make sure to walk around the panoramic walkway, Passeggiata Panoramica , behind the cathedral to enjoy fabulous views of the Val d’Orcia.

You’ll find artisanal pecorino cheese shops all over the town. Some Pecorinos are young and buttery, while others are sharper and aged up to a year. I advise taking home a “stagianato” pecorino (sharp zesty flavor).

If you want to grab lunch in Pienza, check out Trattoria Latte di Luna, Osteria Baccus, or La Terrazzo del Chiostro Restaurant.

pretty street with flowers in Monticchiello

Montichiello

Monticchiello is a tiny hamlet that’s a classic Tuscan village. It’s right between Pienza and Montepulciano. Monticchiello lies along a dusty road meandering between golden rolling hills.

It’s a tiny village of just 200 residents, with eye catching ruins of the city walls and towers that date from the 13th century.

The town’s most impressive building is its church, the Pieve dei Santi Leonardo e Cristoforo. The church dates back to the 1200s and has a plain yet beautiful Romanesque-Gothic facade.

The other thing not to miss in the Monticchiello is the panoramic view just outside the main medieval gate. From there, you can see the neighboring town of Pienza.

If you didn’t eat in Pienza, stop in for lunch at  La Porta  for some wine and tagliatelle with white truffles.

wine cellar in Montepulciano

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a must visit town with a weekend in the Val d’Orcia. It’s an enchanting medieval village famous for its velvety  vino nobile  red wine. It’s the one town that’s a bit of a tourist magnet in the Val d’Orcia.

But you don’t have to be a wine lover to visit Montepulciano. The town is utterly beautiful and synonymous with most peoples’ images of Tuscany.

It’s perched on a limestone ridge and draped in vineyards. The town has ochre and rust homes set on streets paved with slate blocks.

Montepulciano boasts Renaissance palazzi and churches of a splendor far beyond its dimensions. Its architectural beauty led Montepulciano to be dubbed the “Pearl of the 1500s.”

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

There are plenty of amazing  things to do in Montepulciano . If you haven’t been to Montepulciano before, you may want to book a  guided walking tour  to get the lay of the land.

If not, the first thing to do in Montepulciano is stroll the pretty main drag,  Il Corso . The street is filled with cafes, shops, and grand facades of Renaissance and Baroque palazzi.

Piazza Grande is the monumental center of Montepulciano. It contains all of Montepulciano’s most important Medieval and Renaissanace architecture — a clock tower, the Duomo, Palazzo Contucci, and a beautiful well.

Il Corso in Montepulciano

Next visit Palazzo Communale, which is Montepulciano’s town hall. Plan on climbing the palace’s tower.

It’s a steep climb, but it’s worth the effort for the amazing panoramic views over the town, Piazza Grande, and countryside.

Il Corso is just one loop of a street in a thin town. But if you head down an alley, it’s hard not to gasp. The buildings frame a stunning vista and the lanes end in lookout parapets.

The last thing to see in Montepulciano is the stunning San Biagio Church. It’s one of the most beautiful Renaissance churches in Italy.

the beautiful Renaissance Church of San Biagio

The impressive church is the masterpiece of Anthonio da Sangallo the Elder. It’s stacked up against the hillside above.

Round off your Val d’Orcia itinerary with a visit to La Foce . It’s just 20 minutes from Montepulciano.

It’s worth the slight detour for the glorious views from its perch overlooking the Val d’Orcia.

It’s a completely renovated villa with a beautiful terraced rose garden and wisteria pergola.

You may want to stop for dinner here. La Foce has a restaurant serving up unique takes on traditional Tuscan cuisine.

Montefollonico

Montefollonico

Alternatively, head to the enchanting off the beaten track village of Montefollonico. It’s a tiny walled hamlet just 15 minutes north of Montepulciano. It boasts flower filled courtyards and a beautiful view of the valley.

In Montefollonico, you won’t find any tourists. One reason to visit aside from the authentic vibe? It has some fantastic restaurants for dinner to end your day.

La Chuisa has a Michelin-starred restaurant . Another great option that the locals love is Ristorante 13 Gubbo . You can dine in a medieval setting in one of the best restaurants in Tuscany.

Guided Tours To The Val d’Orcia

Don’t want to do the driving yourself? No problem, you can take guided tours to the Val d’Orcia from Italy’s major cities. You can:

  • book a 1 0 hour tour to the Val d’Orcia from Florence
  • book a full day tour from Siena
  • book a wine lovers tour from Florence
  • book a full day tour from Rome

Things To Do In The Val d’Orcia

Aside from all the quaint towns I’ve mentioned above, there are some classic activities to indulge in the Val d’Orcia:

  • go horse backing riding from Montepulciano
  • take a cooking class at a farmhouse
  • bike ride from Pienza to Montalcino
  • take a wine tour in Montepulciano

Piazza della Repubblica in Cortona

More Time In The Val d’Orcia?

If you have more than a weekend or 2 days in the Val d’Orcia, spend another day in the town of Cortona and Lake Trasimeno in Umbria.

Buttressed against Monte Sant-Egidio, at a height of 2,000 feet, Cortona has the broadest panorama of any hill town in Tuscany.

Cortona was made famous by the movie and book  Under The Tuscan Sun . It’s a quiet stony charmer.

Cortona’s main street is Via Nazionale, the only flat place in town. At one end of the street is Cortona’s most famous piazza, the Piazza della Repubblica, perfect for lunch and people watching. At the other lies the splendid Piazza Garibaldi.

Cortona has a wonderful little museum you’ll want to visit, the  Museo Diocesano . The museum has some absolutely superb paintings — works by such Renaissance luminaries as Far Angelico and Luca Signorelli.

You can grab some lunch at  Osteria al Teatro or Ristorante La Loggetta .

Lake Trasimeno and the town of Passignano sul Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is right on the edge of Tuscany and Umbria, and technically in Umbria. It’s just 20-25 minutes from Cortona.

The lake is dotted with tiny hamlets and has three islands. It’s the perfect place to relax and go swimming, boating, or biking. You can also hop a ferry to explore the island of Isola Maggiore.

Val d’Orcia itinerary – A day driving around Val d’Orcia

Driving around in Tuscany is one of the best ways to appreciate its scenic countryside . With this Val d’Orcia itinerary we take you around one of its most enchanting areas, to discover why it’s considered the jewel in Tuscany’s crown.

The Val d’Orcia is an area south of Siena that has a unique beauty all of its own. With its verdant rolling hills, poetic views and picturesque villages , it’s an unspoiled paradise for visitors, and a UNESCO site of outstanding beauty.

Enjoy the best of the Val d’Orcia in a day

Take the SR2 from Siena and head south, towards a world of pure beauty and enchanting views. These are the vistas that have made Tuscany famous . The graceful rolling hills punctuated here and there with cypress trees. The solitary country churches set in the midst of fields. All of it creating an atmosphere of idyllic tranquility.

Revel in the old-world-charm of small towns like Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia , where stone is the colour of honey, flowers pots dot the streets and even the simple old doors have you reaching for your camera. Find old-fashioned botteghe , quiet sun drenched squares and trattorie where the traditional pici pasta is served with the local pecorino cheese.

Are you ready for the Valdorcia ? The trick is not to rush. The pace is slower here, so you’ll be able to take your time, drive slowly and enjoy the new sights behind every bend in the road.

Val d’Orcia itinerary – Buonconvento to Montalcino

Starting from Siena take the SR2 direction south. Stop at the tiny walled village of Buonconvento , whose name tells you everything. It means “happy, lucky place”. After a cappuccino break, drive on to Torrenieri where you take the SP14 to Montalcino . Its huge Medieval fortress dominates the valley, and welcomes the visitors to Val d’Orcia’s wine capital. Wine lovers know the place well, and come here to sample the local speciality – the famous wine Brunello di Montalcino .

Montalcino offers plenty of wine tasting opportunities, shopping for local delicacies and if you’re in the mood for a bit of Medieval art, you can poke your head inside the Museo Dioceziano. After lunch it’s time to go back onto the SP14 road, towards San Quirico d’Orcia, to one of the most scenic stretches of road in the whole of Tuscany.

Pure beauty – from San Quirico d’Orcia to Pienza

We have a soft spot for the small, quiet town of San Quirico d’Orcia . The main sight is the Collegiata , an evocative Romanesque Church built at the time when pilgrims were passing trough here on the Via Francigena . The weathered lions guarding the entrance, and the monsters sculpted on the portals are simply fascinating.

After a relaxing stroll around the Horti Leonini Gardens, back to the road to reach Pienza . Along this scenic stretch of the SP146 road you’ll spot the famous Vitaleta Chapel seen so many times on the classic postcards of Tuscany. Taking a picture of this chapel is a must on any Val d’Orcia itinerary.

Pienza is the queen of the Val d’Orcia , a delightful small town with a history as impressive as its views. It is a town literally born from a dream. Silvio Piccolomini, aka Pope Pius II , employed the architect Rossellino to convert his home town into a place where the ideal of the Renaissance could be translated into an architectural plan. Have a look for yourself and decide if he succeeded. Visit the Palazzo Piccolomini and enjoy a walk around the town with stunning views over the valley. If you have dinner in Pienza, the trattoria Buca delle Fate is the one to try. Pecorino served with honey, and the local salumi are a must.

DETOUR:   Bagno Vignoni – The town is built around a great pool of thermal water . Unfortunately you can’t have a refreshing swim here, but the effect is truly wonderful, with the stone houses reflected in the water (6 km. from San Quirico d’Orcia).

Val d’Orcia tour

Here the things to see are so many!

Discover on our portal all the sites, places, monuments and activities not to be missed! Whether you rely on organized tours, or if you want to go on an adventure, here is a list of some monuments and sites that you absolutely cannot miss. Of course it all depends a lot on how many days you have available and by what means you will travel, but we can assure you that it will be worth it!

Let’s start by telling you that, whatever your path, if you love nature this is the ideal place for a nice ride or a walk following the ancient Via Cassia, the Francigena and the ancient dirt roads between vineyards and olive groves. Here you will find many bicycle and electric rental services, where they will offer you personalized tours.

Each village in the Val d’Orcia is special: you will feel like you are entering a fairy tale, visiting characteristic villages with medieval and Renaissance architecture. Castles, churches, fortresses and many panoramic terraces to discover, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view over the entire Val d’Orcia!

tour enogastronomico val d'orcia

Every self-respecting tour has its inevitable gastronomic stops!

A special mention goes to Pecorino di Pienza, which was born in this beautiful Renaissance village full of art and monuments to visit, today a must on every tour of the Val d’Orcia. Speaking of food, don’t miss Montalcino and Montepulciano. Homeland of the Brunello di Montalcino wine, the first, while the second of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, are both splendid villages to visit. Don’t forget to try a nice plate of pici, a typical pasta of the area!

We continue with the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, one of the most popular views in postcards and in the most famous shots. You will find it between Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia along the Provincial Road 146 of Chianciano, and it absolutely deserves a photo of you, like the cypresses of San Quirico d’Orcia, another iconic postcard that has made Tuscany famous all over the world. .

And if you want to disconnect for a few hours and immerse yourself in total relaxation of our thermal sites: you will be spoiled for choice! Some with modern spas, others totally natural like the Bagni di San Filippo, true open-air oasis! Among parks, gardens, tastings, archaeological and religious sites, here you will find the peace and tranquility you desire, coming into contact with the wildest and most unspoiled nature! Val d’Orcia is made up of many hidden corners waiting to be discovered by you!

Come visit us, we’ll wait for you!
